EUROCONGRESS VICENZA 2022, AN UNMISSABLE APPOINTMENT The sustainable innovation of the tanning process is at the centre of the debate. For Franca Nuti “an opportunity for a real discussion on the value of leather as an example of circular economy”

ous issues related to the leather supply chain from all over Europe and beyond, concluded the evaluation of the abstracts by identifying those of greatest interest so as to be proposed as oral presentations. I take this opportunity to once again thank all the reviewers for making available their professionalism and expertise to the Scientific Commission in order to carry out an essential task for the technical quality of the Congress. The standard of works is certainly good with numerous proposals and innovative solutions on various issues that are useful to plan the future of the supply chain. Everyone will find interesting ideas and suggestions that make it possible to think about the creation of the leather article with a path that optimises and preserves environmental resources and product quality”.

FRANCA NUTI

There are only a few months left until the appointment with the III EuroCongress IULTCS Vicenza 2022, a scientific technical event dedicated to the presentation of the latest advances in leather processing that aims to unite at least 400 delegates from all over Europe. The appointment organised by the Italian Association of Leather Chemists (AICC) has been set from 18 to 20 September 2022 in Vicenza, a wonderful city rich in historical and artistic treasures, just a stone’s throw from Arzignano, the heart of the Venetian tanning district. The title of the Congress “Rinascimento: The Next Leather Generation” clearly shows that the organisers intend to contribute to the relaunch of the sector, promoting the search for ever greater sustainability. The macro themes chosen for this event are in fact the development of increasingly green and performing chemical products, technological innovation of tanning processes, new and more accurate analysing methods of hides to detect the presence of unwanted components, circular economy for the reduction of waste and enhancement of by-products. We talk about the scientific objectives of the Congress with Franca Nuti, president of the Scientific Commission, who followed the entire evaluation of the abstracts. The Call for Papers of the III EuroCongress has ended. How do you assess the volume and level of jobs submitted for your review? “The abstracts arrived and proposed to the Scientific Commission as oral presentations or as posters were numerous and came not only from Italy but also from EU and non-EU research institutions. The Scientific Commission, made up of 23 expert reviewers in vari6 ARSTANNERY

What are the most interesting or innovative themes that will be discussed at the Congress? “Four are the themes chosen for the Congress by the Organising Committee, key points to plan the future of the supply chain with a new way of thinking. In particular, the issues on which scientific technical works have been requested are in detail: -New developments in chemicals for the Leather tanning industry -Innovative technologies the Leather manufacturing processes -Chemicals and Leather test methods: new developments / approaches -Focus on environmental aspects (e.g. LCA, by-product, wastewater, emission) The research results developed by industry experts on process and product innovation will be presented taking into account the respect and containment of all the resources involved, also indicating analytical methods to enhance and measure everything and be the basis of the Congress”. What are the main themes the aspiring speakers who submitted the abstracts focus on? “We received works on all four Congress themes. Many address issues dedicated to process innovation with solutions related to plant technologies or the use of new generation chemicals. Several proposals deal with environmental aspects, proposing the recovery, reuse and containment of resources. Equally important are the works dealing with analytical methods for the determination of substances, until now unavailable and not regulated, recently subjected to legislative restrictions on leather and chemical products”. What kind of Congress do you expect from a scientific and technical point of view? “The Congress was organised with the aim of offering, after two years of pandemic that severely limited scientific technical comparison, an important meeting opportunity for the entire tanning industry in order to grasp new proposals and useful ideas to rethink how to make future leather in a truly sustainable way”.

Leather suffers increasingly more the competition from alternative materials. What can the scientific world do to counter this trend? “This Congress is an important opportunity for a real discussion on the value of the tanning process as a historical example of the circular economy. We hope that this path will go further and lead to sharing both scientific knowledge and beliefs among professionals and a way to be able to communicate all this effectively and incisively even outside the supply chain. The scientific world must be able to elaborate its knowledge by finding simple and incisive ways to bring out the falsehoods at the basis of many communications that have been underestimated for too long, providing clear elements to help the consumer in the choice of materials”.

HOW TO REDUCE METHANE EMISSIONS FROM RUMINANTS An important Forum organised by JBS and Silvateam stimulated the debate among researchers on a topic deemed crucial to reduce the environmental impact of livestock farming

MICHELE BATTAGLIA, VICE PRESIDENT OF SILVATEAM BRASIL

GILBERTO TOMAZONI, CEO GLOBAL JBS

The event organised by JBS, the world’s largest meat producer, in partnership with Silvateam, the world leader in the production of plant based extracts for animal feed, was entirely dedicated to the reduction of methane emissions from ruminants. Entitled “Livestock Farming Methane Forum – the path to climate neutrality” the forum was held physically on 4 and 5 May at the Hilton Hotel in Sao Paulo (Brazil) but thanks to the hybrid formula it was also possible to follow it remotely via the web. It was an important opportunity to promote debate and reflect on a highly topical issue, namely how to reduce methane emissions from cattle to help mitigate the climate impact of livestock farming. A theme, that of the environmental impact deriving from cattle breeding, which gained momentum after the approval of the Global Methane Pledge, an agreement reached at Cop26 in Glasgow by more than one hundred countries aimed at reducing methane emissions at least by 30% by 2030, a necessary effort to help mitigate global warming. The participating speakers were many and of the highest level, like Frank Mitloehner, air quality specialist and professor at the Department of Animal Science at the UC Davis, California, who introduced the issue by presenting a very in-depth report on the methane role, one of the most powerful greenhouse gases, whose impact on global warming has however been overestimated since, unlike CO2, which is much more persistent, methane degrades in the atmosphere after 10-12 years. “New measuring systems are therefore needed and also in-depth studies”, explained the American expert who cited as an example to follow the state of California which recently adopted a law aimed at reducing methane emissions by 40% through the lever of incentives for the development of innovative technologies. Moreover, the importance of the Forum was highlighted in the development of the debate and in the comparison between the 8 ARSTANNERY

world’s leading experts on climate warming, livestock breeding and animal nutrition and more. There was talk of techniques to evaluate and measure greenhouse gases, and of already available solution for the mitigation of emissions. Diana Rodgers, director and co-author of the book and movie “Sacred Cow”, focused her report on the importance of meat in human nutrition, debunking the many false myths in circulation regarding its danger, while Peer Ederer, director and founder of GOAL Sciences - Global Observatory on Livestock Sciences, noted among other things how accurate studies on greenhouse gases have shown that the degradation of methane is hindered in areas where there is a high concentration of CO2, but science has yet to provide many answers regarding to methane. “There are many good reasons to reduce these gas emissions, but new primary data must be processed to develop more precise study models to make reliable predictions”. One of the solutions to reduce emissions concerns the feeding of ruminants. Over the last fifteen years Silvateam, a global leader in the production of tannins used in various sectors including leather tanning, has invested in research to find cutting-edge solutions also for animal nutrition, promoting the transition to natural and eco-compatible ingredients. Tannins and polyphenols are the main natural extracts chosen to increase the production efficiency of livestock, effectively replace antibiotics and improve animal welfare, all by reducing gas emissions and therefore the impact of climate change. “We are here - said Michele Battaglia, vice president of Silvateam Brasil - to discuss and understand together what the best solutions are to help reduce the impact on the environment. One of our solutions is the ECOTAN tanning system which allows to obtain circular leather that becomes a fertiliser at the end of its life cycle”. Fábio Dias, Director of Relations with Livestock Farmers of Friboi-JBS, spoke about the initiatives that the Brazilian animal protein giant is implementing to achieve the promised climate neutrality (Net Zero) by 2040. “JBS has undertaken the commitment to eliminate its greenhouse gas emissions. Part of this challenge concerns methane emissions in the beef cattle chain for which we are developing mitigation projects. All of this is of course not enough, and we know we don’t have all the answers. For this reason we have organised an event that brought together the major specialists in the subject engaged in this crucial mission”, said Fábio Dias. As for the diet change of ruminants, Maik Kindermann, director for innovation and technology at DSM, reported a very interesting analysis. Kindermann presented the advantages offered by Boaver®, a supplement to be added to the feed of cattle that inhibits the enzyme responsible for the formation of methane that has been developed, tested and perfected over the last 12 years promising a reduction in emissions between 70 and 80%.

APLF DUBAI 2022 BETTER THAN EXPECTED The special edition in the United Arab Emirates was closed successfully by exhibitors and organisers. The absence of Chinese buyers weighed but was partially offset by the arrival of new operators from various countries

A good fair, in spite of everything and the extraordinary circumstances - first and foremost the change of headquarters but even more the heavy economic uncertainties tied to the incredible rally in the prices of raw materials and logistics, not to mention the energy shock and other consequences of the war in Ukraine. The first time in Dubai of “APLF Leather, Materials+ and Fashion Access” has achieved the goal of relaunching the event by making the operators of the leather sector meet in person three years after the last edition of 2019 in Hong Kong. As foreseen by the same organisers who spared no efforts to set up a high-level event, the Leather Fair, which for 35 years has been representing the main trade fair platform for Southeast Asia, obviously suffered the absence of Chinese operators in its special edition in Dubai, both in terms of exhibitors and visitors (for obvious reasons completely absent) but on the other side it attracted new visitors from Europe and countries like India, Vietnam, Pakistan, Iran, Bangladesh, Turkey as well as the United Arab Emirates and African countries, opening new perspectives and horizons. Despite the many problems, there was a positive atmosphere in the corridors of the fair, full of energy and moderate optimism. More than six thousand buyers from 88 countries and regions registered at APLF Dubai. Also on a visual level, the event appeared rather lively, animated by a discrete flow of visitors, especially during the first two days of the fair. The most promising market seen in Dubai seemed to be the Indian one where the sector enjoys government support, thanks to the exemption of import duties and the latest five-year development plan which according to the Indian Council for Leather Exports will lead to a double turnover of the leather sector - which should reach $10 billion - while domestic turnover should increase from the current US $ 12 billion to US $ 20 billion by 2025-26. Good prospects also affect Uzbekistan (for the 10 ARSTANNERY

first time present at APLF as exhibitor) where it is estimated that a mix of positive factors such as tax exemption, the implementation of state aid and the establishment of new industrial zones will lead to increase export sectors from US $ 101 million in 2017 to US $ 1.2 billion by 2026. Also Egypt is expected to increase its tanning production in the near future thanks to the implementation of the Robbiki Leather City, the industrial park where tannery activities from the area of Old Cairo relocated. Zimbabwe, another African country at the centre of the scene today, should stimulate the production and export of raw hides, especially exotic ones, thanks to the new national strategy to promote exports. Among the 463 exhibitors present at the World Trade Centre in Dubai, the most consistent national group was the Italian one which stood out with 128 stands, divided between the collective of machine builders and producers of chemical auxiliaries led by Assomac and ITA Agency and that of UNIC tanners. For everyone, the event was an opportunity to meet non-Asian customers in person and new potential buyers. The comments of the participants were mostly positive, in particular among technology suppliers, who told of interesting meetings with new operators, while tanneries were more aware of the issues related to the prices of Italian finished leathers, judged too high to this type of markets. India with 86 exhibitors, Pakistan (48) and Brazil (41) were among the countries most represented on an exhibiting level. The reactions of Brazilian tanners were very positive, talking about very promising contacts with new Indian, Vietnamese and even European operators. As always, APLF also hosted numerous collateral events, including conferences and seminars related to the prospects of the sector and issues related to sustainability. Much has also been said about the prices of raw hides which have experienced a fluctuating trend in the last three years. An example? In 2020, in full pandemic, the price of the American heavy

Texas steer, which is known as the industry benchmark for its wide use in footwear, had dropped to just 15 dollars. In 2021 this type of cowhide rose to $ 55 thanks to the restart of demand and then fell back to $ 30 in 2022, a price level that certainly appears more attractive today in order to replenish the stocks of crude oil in the tanneries. After APLF Dubai 2022 organisers already think ahead. The question that everyone is asking today is where the next 2023 edition will be held. Organisers would obviously like to return to Hong Kong, the historic site of the event, but the pandemic situation does not necessarily allow it. The good results of Dubai could therefore lead to an encore in the Emirate metropolis. It was announced that this decision will be made before summer.

EUROPE PUTS THE BREAKS ON FAST FASHION Bruxelles launches the green challenge to the textile and clothing industry Last 30 March, the European Commission presented an important package of rules to encourage the adoption of circular economy models in the textile and clothing sector. The proposal implements the commitments made with the European Green Deal, the New Circular Economy Action Plan and the Industrial Strategy. The consumption of textile products in the EU, in fact, is the fourth biggest factor of impact on the environment and on climate change, after food, buildings and mobility. It is also the third consumption area for water and land use and the fifth for use of raw materials and greenhouse gas emissions. The new rules will apply “to all products sold on the European market, regardless of where they are manufactured”, Virginijus Sinkevicius, Environment Commissioner, said. The wide-ranging strategy aims to make textile products more durable, repairable, reusable and recyclable, tackling fast fashion. The proposal presented by the Commission will force the fashion world to rethink itself in a more sustainable and circular way. Low-quality and low-cost clothing, often produced in inadequate working conditions outside the Union, is being targeted. About 5.8 million tonnes of textiles are discarded every year in the EU, equal to 11 kilos of European material. For Brussels it is necessary to reverse the course.

SIMAC TANNING TECH 20-22 September 2022 - Preview

WELCOME

Simac Tanning Tech 2022 Find your solution by Maria Vittoria Brustia - President of Assomac Servizi s.r.l. Each year, the Simac Tanning Tech fair is something completely new: it is an interesting challenge to combine the expectations of international visitors with an attractive exhibition offer for exhibitors from all over the world. For the next appointment I am thinking of two ‘keywords’: partnership and relationship. Partnership: collaborating vertically and horizontally at all levels up to international level in the supply chains and in related and complementary sectors. It is the only way to make Simac Tanning Tech the technology platform for the Fashion sector. Relationship: a fair is the place par excellence where people meet. An aspect not to be taken for granted: in recent years, between pandemics and international tensions, serious economic and social crises and the recent war, there is a need for openness and a need to meet people again. Simac Tanning Tech must be the place (the Hub) where the entire production world, of which we are part, can find dialogue and business opportunities. Sustainability and Digitisation (of production processes and value chains). These two words add value to the major themes we face every day: international macro-themes that will be at the centre of the 2022 exhibition offer and that we will develop during the workshops and the ‘Assomac TALKS’ shows. If “digital enables sustainability”, without partnerships and relationships between the actors of the different production chains, it is very difficult to find solutions that promise sustainability and are really consistent and ‘sustainable’ in front of public opinion. The Simac Tanning Tech Organising Secretariat is already receiving membership requests from exhibitors and is building an overall offer that we hope will live up to expectations. But I see a contagious fellowship and enthusiasm in the ‘work teams’ set up together with our partners which, I am sure, will lead to good results, so that everyone “finds his/her best solution” to the urgent production and management needs of the times we live in. We are working to ensure that our trade fair has the right international positioning among other trade fairs and major events in the supply chain and institutional interlocutors and ‘opinion leaders’ of the various markets, promoting partnerships and constructive dialogue. A safe fair, with the best Covid solutions and protocols, to spend three unforgettable days live in Milan. We look forward to seeing you at the fair! Collaborazione: collaborare a tutti i livelli fino a quello internazionale, verticalmente e orizzontalmente nelle filiere e nei settori affini e complementari. Vi aspettiamo in fiera! 18 SIMAC TANNING TECH

ALL THE NEWS OF THE NEXT SIMAC TANNING TECH The 2022 edition, 20-22 September, of the important appointment with technology, will be dedicated to partnerships and relationships at international level.

After a 2021 edition defined “above expectations”, the Simac Tanning Tech to be held from Tuesday 20 to Thursday 22 September 2022 at Fiera Milano Rho, wants to continue the relaunching process of the entire technology sector. And it will do so by multiplying the international fair’s overall offer of ‘solutions for production’ dedicated to the Footwear, Leather Goods, Fashion Tannery and Automotive sectors. Also thanks to the support, in all its activities, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and ITA Agenzia for the promotion abroad and internationalization of Italian companies. This year the watchword will be Networking: in fact, there will be numerous opportunities and spaces to meet during the fair, in order to guarantee everyone the opportunity to dialogue and share information and commercial offers. A network of opportunities also available to international delegations who will visit the event, thanks to the traditional collaboration with ICE Agenzia: delegates from different countries of the world will look for answers to their technology needs among the wide range of exhibitors. Also helped by the official APP of the “Simac Tanning Tech 2022” Exhibition, revised and updated in content, which will encourage an even more fruitful dialogue between visitor and exhibitor, and also the interactive navigation of the high-level physical fair. But in a landscape like the present one, in constant and frenetic change, Simac Tanning Tech can no longer be just the traditional fair where supply and demand meet. And, in fact, the efforts of the organisers go ever more in the direction of structuring an event that is a platform for allround business and information. ASSOMAC is developing the themes that will be at the centre of the next Technological Corner, an open innovation environment, to show visitors studies and solutions for the manufacturing sector that fully integrate the innovative technologies of Industry 4.0. Other opportunities for training and information can be seized thanks to the intense, broad and varied programme of events and workshops, where you can discuss and share news regarding the major current themes for the sector. International guests will take the stage that will be set up inside the Simac Tanning Tech pavilions and will compose the various panels of the Assomac TALKS round tables. The team of “Simac Tanning Tech Ambassadors” is also already at work: a select group of journalists and disseminators from all over the world will collaborate with the organisation of the event to enrich the Community with content and promote the fair and content. Last important news: the information platform of Simac Tanning Tech does not just revolve around the physical event in September, but is also active and available, always and for everyone on news.simactanningtech.it. Thanks to the launch of the communication platform of the ‘Simac Tanning Tech Information HUB’ fair, the organisers of the event share online news and insights relating to the reference sectors, research, the evolution of technologies, as well as the changing economic scenarios. 20 SIMAC TANNING TECH

ASSOMAC TALKS 2022, THE APPOINTMENT IS RENEWED The appointment with the platform that Simac Tanning Tech dedicates to all-round information on market prospects is repeated. Sustainability, Market Speed, and Supply Chain Collaboration are the core themes.

ENRICO CIETTA

Simac Tanning Tech is increasingly transforming itself from a fair, where exhibitors show the best of their technology, to a platform where all operators in the industry become protagonists of a system dedicated to identifying future themes of interest for the sector in relation to markets, specific issues of technological innovation, sustainability ... A change dictated by the overturning of some logic of the past: if previously it was the technologies of the exhibitors present at the fair that prompted future changes in the sector, today technologies are called to promptly respond to the continuous and sudden change in market needs. “Following this logic, Assomac Talks – whose second edition will be held in September 2022 during Simac Tanning Tech - wants to be the way in which the technology industry for shoes, bags and leather connects with what is happening in the world identifying the key words to acknowledge in order to evolve”, explains Enrico Cietta - economist and curator of the contents of the initiative. And it will do so by following three guidelines. The vertical one will answer the key question: ‘What can technology do to respond to the new emerging issues related to Sustainability, Market Speed and Supply Chain Collaboration?’ Sustainability: an area in which technology plays a core role, especially considering an evolutionary logic of the issue. Assomac Talks will therefore present both the best innovations already available, and the perspectives on which future developments will focus. Market Speed: in recent years there has been a reshuffling of the production chain due to a pandemic, a logistical crisis and geopolitical changes. The policy of cost containment was called into question as 22 SIMAC TANNING TECH

the only valid parameter, and production flexibility that implies speed, small batch orders, and customisation has assumed importance. On this subject, technology is on one side challenged and on the other the only resource able to facilitate the changes taking place. Assomac Talks will interpret the possible evolutionary paths of this market trend. Sector collaboration: both of the previous issues can only be addressed at a systemic and supply chain level. The challenges facing the industry require a broad-based collaboration. It is no longer the time when the innovation of a single person was enough to revolutionise the sector. Collaboration and integration, even between different sectors, are the paths to follow. Also on this aspect the Assomac Talks event will provide ideas and interesting insights. The issues set out so far will be dealt with and deepened also horizontally, declining them in a different way with respect to the various markets with which the sector interacts, from the Asian to the one in the US. A look to the west and east that opens up different perspectives and that will also involve some journalists (the Ambassadors) who will take part in the event. “The debate will also move on to another direction, which we could define as the zeta axis - concludes Cietta -. In this case, the needs of the various players in the sector will end under the lens, whether they are part of the material (factories) or intangible (creativity and sales) supply chain. Example: if designers should be planning to mainly focus on leather, the repercussions would be felt along the entire value chain”. To gather the wealth of information that Assomac Talks will offer from next 20 to 22 September during Simac Tanning Tech, it is possible to consult the news.simactanningtech.it/assomac-talks page.

THE TECHNOLOGY THAT AWAITS US AT SIMAC TANNING TECH 2022 The collection, analysis and sharing of data will be crucial for the future of the manufacturing sector. The technological choice will be the focal point to manage these factors. edited by Andrea Favazzi - Assomac

ANDREA FAVAZZI

The analysis of what to expect from technological applications in the near future can only start from the current issues and events that affect the market today. A market in which, among other things, there is no lack of demand that, paradoxically, we are sometimes forced to evade because we are unable to build the answers, the machinery. In fact, among the problems on the table of all companies, the most pressing issue requires them to overcome the difficulties related to the procurement of materials and components. A theme that forces, in some cases, to redesign the machines and reorganise internal processes. Or, to look for alternative solutions, such as building the pieces at home. As a result, the companies that currently are able to have a constructive know-how find themselves slightly better off in finding quick and concrete answers. Another theme: in recent years there have been many incentives aimed at the Digital Transformation of productions pushing the industrial fabric to automate some processes. It was highlighted that, in addition to the objectives of greater production, better 24 SIMAC TANNING TECH

control and organisation, cost containment and quality control, Industry 4.0 can also represent a response to the increasingly evident lack of professionalism, attributable to the aging of the specialised work force. Automation, therefore, must be interpreted as a solution capable of providing that quality and precision no longer achievable by the real operator. But let’s get to the crucial point. To the theme that at this moment introduces all future technological innovations: the collection, management and analysis of data. The new machinery and upcoming technologies will have to devote themselves to the search for solutions that meet ‘traceability’ needs, which, in turn, implies an efficient and well-structured data exchange. The biggest difficulty to overcome, with respect to the topic, concerns the lack of defined rules and shared standards. A situation that makes the landscape still confusing and hazy, despite the fact that month after month the growth of a digitisation culture and the desire to trace a common path that involves the entire production chain is evident. In short, there are still too many ideas and no certainties, except that change must necessarily go through this stage. The solution could emerge from various thrusts: the big brands in the sector impose their own systems and practices; or the European regulation, starting from the topic already on the table of data security management, could provide the guidelines. Two paths that are already planting some stakes in the free field on which we moved previously. In still such an uncertain situation, companies in the sector need to be cautious and attentive. Get information, investigate, adopt technologies and verify the results obtained. Before being excited and convinced by start-ups or futuristic experiments, it is important and fundamental to understand how much data is collected in the company by processes and products, how they are managed, and if it is possible to analyse them. The advice is not to stand still, but to tackle gradual and well-considered projects and also to evaluate them every six months, given the speed with which the cards on the table change. There remains an aspect on which we do not yet dwell enough and which could assume an increasingly central and strategic role in the Digital Transformation of the manufacturing sector: Artificial Intelligence. And once again, on closer inspection, the ability to integrate IT solutions for data collection and management on the one hand and process mapping and description on the other, will be crucial for a targeted response to the problem. Is the future still too distant? Maybe, but the rapid and overwhelming application developments that bits have accustomed us to, describe well the potential change that we may soon see.

OUTLOOK

Oppure, a cercare soluzioni alternative, come costruirsi i pezzi in casa.

GEMATA DESIGNS THE GREEN FUTURE OF SPRAY FINISHING The company has further improved the environmental performance of its spray systems

Gemata company always searches for news solutions for the tanning sector and, moreover, designs helpful technologies for saving economic and environmental resources. In recent times, studies from the R&D department focused on the most problems concerning the traditional finishing with spray booth: thanks to these analyses, the environmental performances of the Gemata spraying systems has been significantly improved with the innovations made to both the economizer and the scrubber. In recent years Gemata has redesigned the SPRAYSTAR-EVO spray booths, characterizing them with a particular octagonal shape that avoids the stagnation of fumes and allows a 10% reduction in the volume of air to be extracted compared to the traditional rectangular shape. These advanced cabins make use of special green solutions such as: - the device for the deionization of the atomized air of the spray guns to increase of a 30-40 % the deposit of paint on the leather; - the Heat Recovery system uses the humid and hot air suctioned from the drying tunnel to pre-heat the dry air coming from outside, thus reducing running costs; - the Energy Saving system to optimse energy consumption by 26 ARSTANNERY

means of a completely automatized electronic control that progressively stops the spray line up to its complete turn off in case of lack of leathers to be processed. In addition to these innovations, Gemata technicians worked to the develop a new economiser that introduces a different and greener approach to reduce and supervise the overspray. They focused on the effect on the plume on the leather evaluating the percentage of the area sprayed by the gun that overlaps: with this system the activation of the gun is such as to obtain an effective percentage of leather coverage equal to the set threshold. Summarising, while considering the shape and dynamics of the plume, precision, quality and product savings can be increased. The threshold manages with the same logic for any edge, shape or profile of the leather, regardless of its size, as well as on close fitting leathers or with the presence of holes: it is evident that the higher quality on the edges will require more overspray. Despite of this, thanks to the new economiser, it is possible to have a real-time estimate of this waste: if this quantity is judged excessive, the overlap threshold can be altered, and the effect directly verified. Finally, as previously mentioned, Gemata has paid attention to the

air depuration systems with a redesign of the scrubber to minimise the pollution in atmosphere. The new ECO-SCRUBBER provides a fume scrubbing unit with a water mist system (“wet system”) and mechanical/textile filters that improve abatement performance. It differs from the previous models for greater efficiency which is guaranteed by the particular engineering solution adopted, which includes: - a second chamber of spheres with an increased sticking surgace; - a group of nozzles placed upstream above the spheres; - an easy-to-replace dry filter group to capture solid microparticles. In this way the air comes out purified and fine dust, since all pollutants are captured. All these new technologies developed by Gemata have as their common denominator the goal of making spray finishing an ecological, efficient alternative with a lower environmental impact, to make tanning processing processes more and more sustainable.

MOSCONI IMPROVES ITS HYDRAULIC FLESHING MACHINE All the novelties of the latest model of SM XII and its possible applications

Fleshing, fresh either lime, is one of the fundamental processes to have a high quality finished leather. Mosconi spa with its new updated and improvment, is able to offer, SM XII, a machine that ensures perfect fleshing without damaging the hide. The SM XII, like all Mosconi machines, is an extremely solid machine thanks to the heat-treated monobloc frame, the large diameter cylinders and a choice of top quality materials and components. For the fresh hides the machine can be completed with the new demanuring unit so in a single step the skin is flesh and at the same time is cleaned on the hair side. Thanks to the characteristics of these machines, as explained by Mosconi’s experts, has been possible to create a Back to Back fleshing line (consisting of two machines and a joining belt) which allows the second machine to be fed automatically without operators. This system allows a great productivity (very similar if not superior to a continuous fleshing machine) while maintaining the strength of a deep but gentle fleshing that avoid any damages on leather. In addition, and very important, if one of the two machines should be stopped for some problem or maintenance, production can be continued with the other machine working in the traditional way. Clearly, this is a big advantage over continuous fleshing machines.

TODESCO RELAUNCHES WITH INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES AND SERVICES The Venetian company multiplies its investments in Research and Technical Assistance It is not a cliché to say that Todesco is a young and dynamic company given that the average age of the staff is only 33 years, compared to a company experience in the leather spraying market of over half a century. In the last two years, despite the difficulties related to the pandemic, the company based in Creazzo (Vicenza) has grown a lot and launches today innovative technologies on the market resulting from 5 patents in addition to 11 others obtained in the past. At the same time, investments were made in foreign markets aimed at strengthening the after-sales technical assistance service, in particular in Tuscany (Italy), Mexico and China, where specialised workshops with in-house trained technical staff were activated. “We are active on many different fronts - tells us Paolo Todesco, member of the second generation who leads the company together with his brother Giorgio - Among the most important innovations I would like to point out that at the beginning of this year we opened an internal R&D centre - which we called T Lab

- where customers can test machines, and try new leather items without having to occupy their production lines”. From a technological point of view, Speedster 2.0 is Todesco’s new flagship, a machine that allows tanneries to carry out colour sampling without interfering with ordinary work. It has recently been upgraded making it even more efficient. “With Speedster it is possible to simulate the work of our Innover finishing lines in total conformity, in order to test the colour in advance and without having to interrupt the main production”, explains Paolo Todesco. A possibility that also derives from the fact that historically all Todesco machines are designed and manufactured internally in every key component, from spraying guns to electronics. Simulations are therefore highly reliable. Todesco’s commitment has also recently focused on software development. The most important novelty here is called Statwatch: “It is a MES (Manufacturing Execution System) type programme applicable on any machine that allows you to analyse production data; not only does it tell you how many hides have been pro-

cessed each day/month, but it also analyses all the conditions and efficiency drops, keeping the parameters related to water and energy consumption under control”. Company efforts have also affected the maintenance aspect, in the awareness that for tanneries today, more than ever, machine downtime causes unsustainable costs: “In the last two years we have experimented a new type of remote technical assistance service with excellent results. We basically have created an internal ‘Control Room’ within the company that allows us to remotely monitor the operation of the machines in use by customers. It is incredible how much data analysis can help to correct any inefficiencies and thus increase productivity”. What is your next goal? “In the coming months we will launch a new spraying line that we have called Kingfisher, a very advanced and aggressive line intended to meet the needs of those markets that are in process of consolidation, like South America and Asia”, concludes Paolo Todesco.

NEW WIRES WASHING SYSTEM - PATENTED NUOVO SISTEMA DI PULIZIA FILI – BREVETTATO

Special brushes on the external side of the screw deeply clean the filtering holes and prevent them from clogging. Then the filtering flow rate is always high and the filtering system maintenance is reduced to the lowest levels. The filter is always equipped with an inner immersion pump, for recycling the filtered liming. Electrical board and control panel are placed on the machine edge. Hair recovery from liming baths The non-destructive systems of liming enable a high reduction in the polluting tanning waste materials both for COD (30-50%) and for suspended solids particles (40-60%), ammonia and sulphide. This processing is effective and easily manageable, provided that the waste disposal flow rate of the filtering system is adequate, so that carrying out times can be reduced. The Hairpress filters are characterised by a high treatment flow rate and by simple functioning and installing, that make them adaptable for any situation. The machine can be gravity fed if the drums are placed about 100 – 200 cm from ground or by means of pumping in case of lower height. In both cases the liming is discharged from the drum throughout waste valves, collected by semicircular gutters (S.C. supply) and conveyed to the filter directly or by means of an immersion pump. The filtered liming is re-pumped to the same drum by the inner pump. This processing lasts till the complete hair removal from liming (about 1 hour) . The retained hair is compacted and discharged with a residual humidity of 40-50%.

The AS Green Technology brand was created to continue the work started by Antonello Sani, who for over thirty years has dedicated himself to studying innovative solutions aimed at improving and managing automation and drying processes for the tanning industry and other industries. In August 2020, Filippo Sani took over his father Antonello’s legacy by setting up his new company in Montopoli Valdarno, Pisa, a few kilometres from the tanning district of Santa Croce S/A. The company specialised in the production of overhead conveyors, automatic loaders and drying systems. Being a very young company, made up of a team of dynamic and close-knit people, Filippo Sani wanted to imprint a communication in step with the times. The first step was a rebranding of the logo and all the products. The new website with the new brochure will also be online soon, and all the most important social media platforms will be activated in order to keep customers up to date with all the company’s news. Even more important is the technological work carried out in recent months. Many innovations have been introduced across most of the product lines. Thanks to the experience gained over the years by the technical department in the tanning sector and other sectors, brand-new technological solutions have been introduced, based on the experience of those who work in the tannery every day. SLUDGE: SSIP RESEARCH PROJECTS Advanced and enabling technologies for the treatment of solid waste and industrial waste water in support of the tanning sector

DANIELA CARACCIOLO

The Italian Leather Research Institute has been supporting for several years a series of research projects regarding the sustainable development of the tanning sector developed by its Department of Technologies for the Environment In such a difficult period in terms of energy self-sufficiency, two fundamental research projects have been developed to support the growth of the tanning sector: 1. Tanning sludge: innovative energy vector 2. Application of advanced oxidation processes to tanning wastewater The treatment and enhancement of sludge deriving from the tanning industry aims to reduce its landfill volume and its reuse as an energy source, with clear environmental and economic benefits while improving the prospects of sustainable mobility. The inclusion of sludge from tanning processes in virtuous enhancement cycles, as already demonstrated for other biogenic or industrial waste/by-products, like sludge from civil purification is the general objective. As the reuse of sludge in agriculture is limited by the presence of pollutants and pathogens, their conversion into: 1) synthetic biogas (hydrogen-based by gasification of sludge) and/or 2) bio-oils (liquids with high energy density candidates for production of advanced “drop in” 48 ARSTANNERY

biofuels) through hydrothermal liquefaction (hereinafter, also: “HTL”) can represent, in this context, a promising path to limit the risks of soil/aquifer pollution associated with the disposal of sludge, and a way to obtain value-added products thus increasing the sustainability of wastewater treatment plants and contributing to the development needs of credible/ sustainable biofuel production processes. The identified process techniques were: a) fast gasification/pyrolysis; b) hydrothermal pyrolysis; c) anaerobic digestion. The analysis of these processes was carried out paying particular attention to optimal operating conditions (for example, depending on the case under consideration: equivalence ratios, distribution/staging of any oxidising streams, residence times, temperatures, pressures, contact patterns) to convert the organic fraction of the sludge towards energy vectors like synthesis gas in the case of gasification, bioliquids in the case of fast and hydrothermal pyrolysis, biogas in the case of anaerobic digestion, preventing the contextual oxidation of the chromium present. The yields in synthesis gas, bioliquids and biogas, and their energy quality, constituted one of the main target parameters to be evaluated, together with the partitioning of selected components, and the properties and partitioning of ash produced. The best results, in terms of energy vector production, were obtained by gasifying the sludge in a fluidised bed reactor (see the diagram of the plant here above). Some, targeted, preliminary tests of sludge treatments from the tanning industry were designed and conducted also including the measurement of incondensable and condensable gaseous effluents from sludge treatment systems, and the microstructural and chemical-physical characterisation of char and bioliquids. AOP Advanced Oxidation Processes The presence of recalcitrant compounds in wastewater is a significant problem of common interest, not only for industrial water treatment plants but also for civil wastewater treatment plants due to the presence of micropollutants like antibiotics and endocrine EDC disruptor chemicals. In recent decades, treatments have been developed for the removal of organic pollutants from water, called advanced oxidation processes (AOPs); these techniques ensure the degradation of even the most refractory organic species, without having to subsequently dispose of any residues. The advanced oxidation processes are classified according to how the radical species are generated: processes with chemical reagents, photolytic processes and finally photocatalytic processes. In the case of processes that use chemical reagents, radical compounds are generated starting from a reaction between some oxidants, without the use of physical promoting agents; as for photolytic processes, instead, the production of radical agents is obtained from the combination of UV and visible radiation with chemical reagents. Finally, photocatalytic processes are performed in the heterogeneous phase, using semiconductor materials, like titanium dioxide, which are able to generate radical species if illuminated by ultraviolet radiation of the appropriate wavelength. Compared to other catalytic and thermal oxidation processes, AOPs have the main advantage of generating radical pressure compounds at ambi-

ent temperature with considerable savings in terms of energy consumption. Advanced oxidation processes are characterised by two phases: the generation of highly reactive compounds and the oxidation reactions of these species with organic pollutants. In this broad overview of oxidation processes of substances recalcitrant to traditional purification systems, SSIP can claim to have carried out photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis tests and is soon preparing to carry out further ozone tests for the treatment of industrial tanning waste. The latter technology, whose efficiency has long been evidenced, turns out to be very competitive, presenting numerous advantages in application and economic terms. edited by Ing.

START OF THE PROJECT LIFE I’M TAN The goal is to produce sustainable leathers thanks to functionalised natural tannins

ERIC POLES OF SILVATEAM IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LIFE I’M TAN RESEARCH PROJECT ERIC POLES DI SILVATEAM È RESPONSABILE DEL PROGETTO DI RICERCA LIFE I’M TAN

The acronym I’M TAN stands for Innovative Modified Natural Tannins. It is a new three-year research project, part of the European Union’s LIFE programme for environment and climate action. Silvateam, Italian world leading company in the production of tannins, is the coordinator of the project which involves other partners of the leather supply chain. In particular, Crossing is a spin-off of the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, specialised in the development of new technologies and the optimisation of process design for sustainable manufacturing applications, while Centro Ricerca per la Chimica Fine (CRCF) is expert in scaling up biomass related processes. Incas is a tannery focused on vegetable tanning and committed to sustainability for many years. Aquarno is involved in the wastewater treatment serving the leather tanning district of S.Croce sull’Arno in Tuscany since 1980. Eric Poles, Head of the I’M TAN project, together with Samuele Giovando, Innovation Manager of Silvateam, explains the main objectives: “This project aims at the development of innovative natural tannins, i.e. purified and chemically modified, which allow us to implement a more efficient and sustainable tanning process also in terms of wastewater treatment”. What is the project roadmap? “The first phase involves an assessment of the state-of-the-art and the benchmarking of the main tanning technologies, as well as the LCA studies on leathers made via these traditional techniques. The second step will be to work on a chemical level to create new functionalised molecules starting from natural tannins. Crossing, with the support of the Centro Ricerca per la Chimica Fine (CRCF), will support the pilot scale-up together with Silvateam. Once the production 50 ARSTANNERY

process of the new tannins is fine-tuned, Silvateam will test them in its experimental tannery. Then it will be the turn of Incas, a tannery which will produce batches of leather on an industrial scale, while Aquarno will monitor the wastewater treatment phase to optimise the environmental aspects”. The announcement of the project, which is worth €2.3 million, €1.2 million of which financed by the European Union, states that Life I'M TAN aims to validate the use of innovative and highly sustainable chemically modified natural tannins on a semi-industrial scale to create high quality leathers for footwear, bags and leather goods. The goal of this tannning process is to ensure a lower impact on the environment, sustainable costs, reduced waste and better implementation of the principles of circular economy. In this way, the leathers obtained and their processing wastes can be upcycled, turning them into fertilisers for organic farming. A further target is to develop an innovative purification process that will allow to separate the by-products of the chestnut and quebracho extracts that are potentially effective additives for animal nutrition, as a valide alternative to antibiotics used as growth promoters. These natural tannins modified according to the principles of green chemistry will be used to produce the final tanning agent. These, in a nutshell, are the objectives of the project I’M TAN: • Reduce hazardous chemicals, such as chrome salts, aldehydes and phenols, in tanning agents. • Reduce the COD/BOD in tannery effluents. • Reduce water consumption through the entire process. • Recover/upcycle leather scraps to produce fertilisers for organic agricolture and additives for animal feed. • Replicate the Life I'M TAN process in other tanneries in Italy and the EU, drawing up a business plan for its introduction in the market. • Analyse the impact of the innovative process through LCA/Life Cycle Cost (LCC), social LCA, Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) and EU Ecolabel to demonstrate the sustainability of the production chain from tannin extraction to leather production and wastewater treatment.

PARTE IL PROGETTO LIFE I’M TAN L’obiettivo è produrre pelli sostenibili utilizzando tannini naturali funzionalizzati I’M TAN è l’acronimo di Innovative Modified Natural Tannins.

THE FUTURE WHITE PRE-TANNING SYSTEM ORIGINATES WITHIN DERMACOLOR LABORATORIES The most ecological solution is ideal for tanneries that want to obtain the “biodegradable leather” certification

vious processes will produce chromium-free, biodegradable waste, crusts, scraps and shavings: waste with a low environmental impact, therefore, which can be treated and recovered in an ecological way».

It is the starting point to obtain biodegradable and compostable leather. But it is also the most ecological solution to store leather and make it no longer perishable, without the need for chromium, glutaraldehyde and other aggressive chemicals. The FUTURE WHITE pre-tanning system developed by the Dermacolor company, has been created for tanneries that want to produce leather in the name of circularity, offering them the path and the solution to follow in order to obtain the certification for biodegradation in water and compost. Rooted in the Tuscan tanning district and represented in the main Italian and world districts, Dermacolor specialises in the production of chemical products for tanning and leather processing. Products are developed in the company’s laboratories, which act as a reference point for tanneries called to face the challenge of sustainability. Hence the idea of FUTURE WHITE pre-tanning: a white pre-tanning agent, that is chromium-free, but at the same time a “pre-tanning of the future”, because it works without glutaraldehyde, phosphonium salts, triazine compounds and other metals. There are countless advantages, starting with the possibility of stabilising the leathers (making them indestructible), and then selecting and storing them for several years without the need to tan them with chromium, other metals or aggressive chemicals. «In this way - explains Andrea Meucci (at the helm of Dermacolor together with Valentina Palagini) - a metal-free and biodegradable leather in waste water and compost is obtained, which can be stored for a very long time or dried and then greened without the aid of chemical bleaching agents». A versatile system, starting from which tanneries can obtain all types of leather, from vegetable to metal-free to classic chrome. «With one core difference, however - Meucci states -: that chrome never enters the work cycle until the retanning phase. Consequently, all the pre52 ARSTANNERY

On 5 April during a special online event, the European federation Cotance that represents the national tanning associations in Brussels, presented the final results of the ERICA project, acronym of “European Repository of the Industry Collective Agreements”, a great job carried out during the pandemic that led to the collection of national collective labour contracts used by the tanning sector in Europe and the creation of an important database accessible online. All this developed in fifteen months of confrontation within the European social dialogue between Cotance and trade unions (industriAll Europe). The project - which involves around 30,000 European employees – brought together tanning associations (including the Italian UNIC- Italian Tanneries) and trade unions from 7 countries (plus United Kingdom) that exchanged information and organised national workshops within which the key topics addressed in the respective national collective agreements were discussed, with a constructive look at what could be done better or more efficiently. Come?

SYN-BIOS LAUNCHES THE NEW NIR TECHNOLOGY Based on IR reflective pigments that do not “heat” automotive leather

SYN-BIOS SpA announces the development of a new series of pigments specifically designed and recommended for the automotive sector, called "NIR TECHNOLOGY": these pigments have been developed on the basis of a technology of reflection of the solar spectrum in the near-infrared region (Near InfraRed, hence "NIR"). The company describes the special feature of this new pigment range as follows: "Normally, dark pigments absorb the solar radiation and consequently heat up much more than light colors, which reflect up to 90 percent of the sun's light energy and therefore remain cooler. The sun's radiation has a broad spectrum of wavelengths, including the near-infrared (NIR) region, which is invisible to the human eye and is responsible for the temperature increase when exposed to sunlight. Light energy is in fact absorbed by dark surfaces in a more significant manner than lighter ones, and is therefore transformed into greater thermal energy. Products pigmented with NIR TECHNOLOGY colors, even the darkest ones do not absorb near infrared radiation, but rather reflect them, with the consequence that they do not heat up as is the case with surfaces made with a normal non-IR reflective pigment. This results into a temperature difference that is reduced by up to 20°C. In addition to this peculiar feature, the colors, with high yield and coverage, have been selected and studied in order to guarantee the maximum resistance to light fastness tests, migration to PVC and heat stability, as required in the manufacturing of car components", explains Dr. Giulia Fontana, technical director of the Montebello Vicentino based chemical company. The NIR TECHNOLOGY series is also fully compliant with MRSL v.2.0. of ZDHC and certified at Level 3, as tangible proof of the commitment of SYN-BIOS SpA to formulate products that do not affect the environment and human health, adhering to and fully sharing the principles of the "Roadmap to Zero" program. Back in September 2021 SYN-BIOS SpA has indeed successfully obtained the ZDHC Level 3 certification on more than 600 products, as recognition that the company shares the foundation's vision of building a more sustainable supply chain to protect workers, consumers and our ecosystem. 56 ARSTANNERY

The LIFE MAGIS project coordinated by ENEA and co-funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Union, which wants to contribute to the dissemination of the Made Green in Italy (MGI) scheme, promoted by the Ministry of Ecological Transition to enhance Italian products with better environmental performance, together with the Product Environmental Footprint, a multi-criteria measure of the environmental performance of a good developed by the European Commission and on which the scheme is based. The progress of the works was recently presented in a special online event entitled “The green side of Made in Italy” which was also attended by UNIC - Italian Tanneries, with Lineapelle, as partner of the project representing the tanning sector. The organisations representing the LIFE MAGIS supply chains, supported by the research partners involved in the project, have developed some proposals for Product Category Rules, i.e. the guidelines that are used to apply the calculation method for specific products, both for the Made Green in Italy scheme and the Product Environmental Footprint. The LIFE MAGIS project intends to experiment the path of the voluntary national Made Green in Italy (MGI) scheme in different industrial sectors for the evaluation and communication of the environmental footprint of products. The goal is twofold: on one side to give consumers reliable information on the impacts of the products they buy, on the other side to help Italian companies highlight their commitment to the environment to make them more competitive on the market. The project aims to promote the spread of the PEF method at the base of the MGI scheme, in Italy and in Europe. LIFE MAGIS also focuses on testing the most effective ways to communicate the environmental value of products, and on disseminating the MGI

ARSTANNERY 57

COLLABORATION IS EVERYTHING Leather Naturally is involved in 5 important projects to relaunch the leather’s image

duce the dependency on fossil-fuel based synthetic materials. Every 5 year there is a large COP organized with the Paris Agreements being one of the most recent and successful COP. At this moment, Leather Naturally is involved in drafting a Roadmap that should support is in getting positive attention that leather is one of the solutions to create a circular society and support in limiting climate impact. 2. Leather Labeling Leather Naturally is involved in discussions with brand organisations to ensure that materials containing mostly plastics/pvc/pu will no longer be connected to leather. Our aim is to create an environment where brands will no longer be using confusing labeling like ‘apple leather’ ‘pineapple leather’ ‘cactus leather’ ‘vegan leather’ and so on. Consumer research in the UK that was commissioned by Leather Naturally tells us that 54% had no idea what ‘vegan leathers’ are made of. More information on leather labeling can be found on the Leather Naturally website with a factsheet in Italian as well. The reason why Leather Naturally is involved in these discussions is to ensure that consumers are being told the truth and that the good image of leather is not being mis-used. Brands have an ethical duty to share transparent information to the consumer and the new legislation that is part of the EU green deal package will support legislation in this.

EGBERT DIKKERS IS THE OUTGOING PRESIDENT OF LEATHER NATURALLY

Leather Naturally is proud to be closely involved in various collaboration projects that are crucial in our industry. Here you can find 5 recent examples of Leather Industry Collaboration. 1. COP26 Glasgow – 1st Leather Manifesto November last year, the 26th COP was organized in Glasgow. During this COP26, Leather Naturally, along with 28 other international leather industry organizations, called on the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) to prioritize natural materials as a means of directly mitigating climate impact. The “Leather Manifesto” written by the organizations, challenges the COP26 to recognize the cyclical, climate efficient nature of natural fibers and their potential for a positive contribution to reducing the climate impacts of consumer products. The reason why Leather Naturally is involved in this important event is to challenge global leaders to prioritize natural materials and re68 ARSTANNERY

3. Outdated data about leather Initiatives like the Higg index are frequently used by brands to get insights in environmental impacts of different materials. What these brands do not realize is that the leather data sets are mostly outdated and questionable. And how is it possible that natural materials mostly score worse than fossil fuel alternatives? Furthermore it is good to have better discussions on the real environmental impact of a product per time that the consumer is using the final product. The big opportunity for leather is the environmental impact per wear! The reason why leather is involved in this discussion is that we need to provide scientific information that is proving why leather is a solution for a circular society. We need to engage with the brands and their data providers to ensure that brands and consumers will make regrettable decisions. 4. Consumers deserve to know what they buy Leather Naturally collaborated with Leather UK and ICLT in a consumer research in the UK. In this consumer research we asked 2.000 adults if they know what leather is, if they know what leather is made of and if they know what they buy in a shop when they buy vegan materials. The results where regretfully very much in line with earlier research done in Italy and in Spain. From the people buying leather, 67% said they bought it because if could be trusted to last a life time and 55% saying that leather is considered a high quality material. 54% of respondents had no idea about the composition of ‘vegan leather’

NEWS

and 52% expressed disappointment when they were told that ‘vegan leather’ could potentially be 100% PVC, PU rather than made from natural materials. The reason why Leather Naturally is involved in this kind of consumer research is to get transparent facts that we can use in communication with brands, with consumers and especially also with brand organisations. 5. World Leather Day – positive messaging! On March 30, Leather Naturally and Leather Working Group collaborated to set up the World Leather Day as a special day to highlight leather as a material that is a solution for a circular society where nothing is wasted, everything can be re-used and ultimately can be re-cycled. We received an overwhelming support from over 70 companies and leather organisations. Next year we will involve anyone who wants to support this positive moment for leather. Leather Naturally is involved in this kind of initiatives because our core focus is on education and promotion of leather. And this is something that we will need to do together!

Leather chemicals manufacturer Royal Smit & Zoon has published its Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) report for 2021, highlighting the company’s environmental and social performance. The report is describing the company’s challenges for the future and the progress it is making towards its mission ‘to create a socially and environmentally sustainable leather supply chain’. Despite the impact of Covid-19 Royal Smit & Zoon is reporting strong progress towards its long-term goals with some specific results, among which the ECOVADIS Gold ranking and the development of the innovative leather technology Zeology. The Board of Management of Royal Smit & Zoon would like to introduce this report with an appeal to the whole industry: “The future of our industry depends on our ability to convince the end-consumer of the environmental, social and economic competitiveness of leather as a circular material. The technologies exist, no inventions are needed. However, we collectively need to do the right thing and attract the young generation and talent. Doing the right thing means making decisions based on facts, proactively exclude those from our value chain who do not share our values and vision and chose to continue with the practices of the past. 1. Introduction COVID-19, a viral infection has created a topsy-turvy effect on global research in the field of material science research and manufacturing sector (Huang et al., 2020). Nicola et al., highlighted the socio-economic implications that has been caused by this pandemic on the different aspects of the world economy (Nicola et al., 2020). Moreover, the measures taken to prevent the spread of novel corona virus has also brought an immense social and economic impact on various industrial sectors including textile, leather and footwear products. Leather and leather products have been a sought after material despite the advent of synthetic materials owing to its versatile properties that cannot be matched by the latter (Kral et al., 2014). Though animal skins were first used by people as a means to protect their body, it has transformed immensely owing to the technological and scientific advancements, making it change from an essential commodity into a niche market (Memedovic and Mattila, 2008). Leather industry plays a prominent role in the world’s economy, with an estimated global trade value of approximately USD 100 billion per year (UNIDO, 2010). To represent the effect of COVID-19 on leather business, the scenario of Indian leather export is explained as a model system considering the fact that India is the second major producer of leather. India exports leather products valued at 5.5 to 6 billion USD annually but the impact of COVID-19 has caused a huge loss in export value of up to 1.5 billion USD. Major leather production units situated in Tamil Nadu and Kanpur has been shut due to the pandemic causing and with the continued lockdown it is predicted to turn into a major financial loss and an economic crisis. Apart from this, since leather industry employs majority of its manpower based on skilled workforce, it represents a major bread earner for the people from weaker economic and financial background. Similar situation is also observed in other major leather manufacturing countries across the world. To add to this, global awareness about the use of biosafety materials has been in raise creating a demand to fabricate bio-safe materials for day-to-day needs such as leather products (Yu et al., 2020). Leather industry being a major commodity-driven sector, its role in addressing the issues concerning the safe use of leather products has become inevitable. To combat this situation, leather manufacturers are on the look out for various options aiming to fabricating antimicrobial leather. Leather, a natural biopolymer is manufactured by stabilization of skin protein against the attack of microbes, acid, alkali and heat using

chemical cross-linkers called as tanning agents. The leather making process is compartmentalized into four stages viz. pre-tanning, tanning, post-tanning and finishing (Thanikaivelan et al., 2005). Even though the first two stages of processing remain the same for manufacturing any kind of leather, the post-tanning process varies according to the intended use of the final material (Heidemann, 1993). Post-tanning is a prime process by which different functional properties are imparted to the tanned leather by employing polymeric fillers, dyes and lubricating agents (Heidemann, 2000). Finishing, the final step is done to protect the leather from the its surrounding environment by forming a thin film on its surface and also to improve the aesthetic appeal using polymeric binders, pigments and various feel modifiers (Covington and Wise, 2020). Though the tanning process provides antibacterial resistance to the fibrous matrix, the presence of various leather making auxiliaries makes it vulnerable to microbial attack (Barghoorn, 1950). And its impact would be much pronounced while leather products are stored for a longer duration. Although considerable attempts were made to develop antimicrobial leather, revisiting of such technological interventions would help to design a process that completely ensures the bio-safety of leather products. Besides the leather’s superior characteristics like breathability and unmatched strength properties compared to that of synthetic material, nowadays consumers are demanding for special and unique properties on their products without compromising the basic nature of leather. In addition, it is forecasted that the automotive industry is set to boom again within a few years owing to the awareness created by the COVID-19 pandemic on social distancing making people shift from public to more of personal transportation. Thus it is expected that vehicles are soon to be considered as next living spaces leading to an increase in hygiene standards alongside a supplemented interactive environment. Since the leather industry caters to a major part of automotive upholsteries, it is expected to meet such standards by incorporating the novel functional materials and cater to the needs of the consumers. In this aspect, several attempts were made to incorporate functional properties such as self-cleaning, thermoregulation, flame retardancy, fragrance release etc., as shown in Fig. 1 to leather through material science interventions for fabricating leather with more functional properties and also to extend its usage in various fields. ments may also lead to the use of leather for non-conventional applications viz., flexible electronic, radiation shielding etc., thus opening new avenues for the leather manufacturers to explore. In leather manufacturing, functional materials (materials that exhibit specific native properties and functions of their own (Wang and Kang, 1998) are incorporated predominantly during post-tanning and finishing process. The major challenge that is to be taken care while fabricating such functional materials is that they should act constructively with the other natural properties of leather. Thus, there is a sheer need for the development of a comprehensive review of functional materials based on leather matrix that can serve as a database for the researchers and guide them in the fabrication of newer advanced materials as per the needs of the industry and its customers. Accordingly, this review primarily discusses the noteworthy progress made in the field of development of different kinds of functional materials using the leather matrix as a platform, their method of incorporation, challenges faced in making such materials and its applications in the real world. 2. Methods The review process was started with the identification of essential properties that may be imposed on the leather based materials owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, the effect of same on the automotive industry which utilizes the leather products in its production was also considered for shortlisting of the functional properties that may become the need of the hour. Accordingly, the research articles giving solutions to such problems were identified from databases such as Google scholar, Web of Science and Science Direct using the keyword such as ‘Antimicrobial leather’, ‘functional leather’, ‘self cleaning leather’, ‘flame retardants’, ‘thermo regulation in leather’. The identified literatures were then grouped as per the property that is imparted to the leather by manually going through the data provided in the abstract initially. Further, it was categorized and tabulated based on the following parameters. 72 ARSTANNERY

Even though, the process of tanning makes the leather matrix resistant towards the action of bacteria, the auxiliaries such as polyurethane, natural beeswax and casein used in finishing process are susceptible to microbial attack (Howard, 2011). To avoid this, generally the auxiliaries used in leather finishing process are formulated with biocides such as chlorinated phenols, dimethyl fumarate, OIT (2-n-octylisothiazolin- 3-one), TCMTB (2-(thiocyanomethylthio) benzothiazole), OPP ortho-phenylphenol), PCMC (para-chlor-meta-cresol) compounds. However, the adverse effects due to the sustained release of these biocides includes eye and skin irritation upon frequent exposure and physical injuries in the case of inhalation or occasional ingestion (Giménez-Arnau et al., 2009). Additionally, the migration of these toxic substances and its contact with human foot is further enhanced by the porous nature of the leather matrix. The porous matrix also absorbs more amount of sweat, oil/grease which get accumulated resulting in colonization of microbes and may cause adverse effects for people with health conditions such as diabetes (Ara et al., 2006; Jennings et al., 1999). Alternatively, antiperspirants and antifungal formulations are sprayed on the foot to control the release of sweat (Aksoy and Kaplan, 2013), however it is not advisable for regular usage. Even though, the finish film contains antimicrobial agent, storage of leather and leather products for a long time in humid conditions such as shopping mall are prone to microbial attack. This scenario was observed during COVID-19 lockdown period in a shopping mall located at Malaysia and the same is shown in Fig. 2. With the recent outbreak of COVID-19, the customers may demand for the product used in day-to-day activities with an antimicrobial surface. As, the leather products occupies a prominent place in human life, it is important to develop leather fabric with inherent antimicrobial activity capable of providing hygiene and comfort to its user. The knowledge obtained from textile industry on development of antimicrobial fabric was explored as a way towards the development of antimicrobial leather (Ballottin et al., 2017; Silva et al., 2018). This section summarizes the various notable attempts that have been taken to manufacture antimicrobial leather. In leather manufacturing, incorporation of such functionality can be achieved through both the post tanning process and finishing process as shown in the Fig. 3. 3.1.1. Antimicrobial leather based on antibiotics incorporation Hong and Sun (2010) coated a polyurethane (PU) formulation containingswitchable photoactive antimicrobial agents such as benzophenone (BP) and rose bengal (RB) on leather surface at a concentration ranging from 0 to 1.43% (w/w). Subsequently, S. aureus and E. coli cultures were inoculated. The activity of these compounds on microbes

was studied by irradiating with UVA (~365 nm), fluorescent (400 lm) and daylight. Similar experiment was setup without use of antimicrobial agents as control. Both the photoactive agents at 1.43% were capable of killing 99.99% of the microbes after an hour of irradiation with UVA/fluorescent light or 40 days of daylight irradiation. The mechanism of antimicrobial activity of BP was explained by the formation of BP radicals after irradiation with UVA light (Hong and Sun, 2007a, 2007b, 2008, 2007b). Additionally, BP being a known photosensitizer, it is capable of abstracting protons from carbamate group of polyurethane to form BP Ketyl (BPK) radicals. The formed BPK radicals attack microbes by inducing unwanted side reactions in biological processes following the classic free radical syndrome. Additionally, BPK radicals gets oxidized back to BP on exposure to oxygen leading to formation of hydrogen peroxides as by product, which further enhances the antimicrobial activity. In case of RB PU coating, RB generates singlet oxygen (reactive oxygen species) upon irradiation with UVA light that are capable of killing the microbes as shown in Fig. 4 (Chang et al., 2008; Killig et al., 2004). These coatings retained their antimicrobial activity even after 500 abrasion cycles. But, due to reddish hue of rose Bengal, its application could be restricted as leather being a product for fashion industry color plays a big role here. Alternatively, in order to prevent the migration of biocides and its contact with human skin, an attempt was made to covalently attach the biocides with film forming material such as PU. The release of biocides from PU backbone is triggered, only when it comes into contact with certain kind of enzymes secreted by microbes. In this view, linear isocyanate terminated pre-polymer was synthesized using polycaprolactone and isophorone diisocyanate by emulsion polymerization technique (Xu et al., 2013). Subsequently, free isocyanate group of pre-polymer was covalently linked with biocide (sulfanilamide (SA)) and named PU/SA. It was noted that the microbes degrading the leather was found to secrete large amount of urease enzyme making it an ideal choice to test as key to trigger the release of conjugated biocide from the polymer (Orlita, 2004). The release of biocide (SA) was triggered by incubating the steel discs coated with PU/SA in a solution of urease enzyme and it was identified that there was sustained release of SA till 96 h after which there was degradation in PU backbone by urease enzyme which was confirmed with HPLC-MS/MS. The

release kinetics of SA fitted to an empirical model proposed by H.B. Hopfenberg showed a release kinetic constant of 0.479% μm/h with a high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.91) (Hopfenberg, 1976). This proved that the release of SA was controlled by urease enzyme and could be stopped in its absence making it a urease-modulated on-off switch system (Fig. 5). The bacteriostatic efficiency of the released SA was checked against range of microorganisms and found to have a maximum of 60% efficiency in inhibiting Pseudomonas species. The cytotoxicity studies showed that the PU/SA coating did not interfere with cell proliferation making this antimicrobial leather coating to be skin-friendly to the wearers. Similarly, Chang et al., prepared a water soluble acrylolated ciprofloxacin and acrylic acid co-polymer for antimicrobial coating along with waterborne polyurethane (WPU) emulsion (Chang et al., 2017). Briefly, ciprofloxacin was acryloylated using acryloyl chloride at 7-piperazinyl secondary amine to introduce polymerisable vinyl groups in the backbone. Acryloylated ciprofloxacin exerted no influence on the 3-carboxyl and 4-keto group in ciprofloxacin, both essential for hydrogen-bonding with microbial DNA to elicit antimicrobial activity (Bryskier, 1993). Additionally, it also did not exert any influence upon the bicyclic heteroaromatic quinolone pharmacophore and π-π ring stacking, permitting flexibility in adjusting position of ciprofloxacin for optimal hydrogen-bonding configuration. Thus, the resulting acryloylated ciprofloxacin (ACPF) remained microbiologically active (Chang et al., 2015; Xue et al., 2012). Also, the washing efficiency showed sustained antimicrobial efficiency even after 10 cycles. 3.1.2. Antimicrobial leather based on metal oxide incorporation Chen et al., impregnated nano TiO2 (using tetrabutyl titanate modified with acetylacetone) into leather along with polyurethane (PU) by wet phase inversion method (Chen et al., 2010). Briefly, PU solution containing the titanium precursor was casted on a pre-wetted leather sample and soaked in an aqueous bath wherein PU solution coagulates along with hydrolyzed and condensed titanium nanoparticles to form a uniform coating on leather (PUT). SEM images showed TiO2 NPs in size of 60–120 nm dispersed well in PU coating. The antibacterial efficiency of PUT films increased up to ~96% with 0.75% TiO2. Highest antifungal activity was also observed in same concentration of TiO2 with no fungal growth even after 28 days. The antimicrobial activity was attributed to the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. When exposed to UV light (y < 385 nm), TiO2 generates electron-hole pairs following TiO2 + hv—TiO2 (h+ + e- ). The electrons produced can reduce oxygen to superoxide anions, while holes oxidize water to produce hydroxyl radicals. These reactive species can then effectively kill a wide spectrum of organisms such as bacteria and fungi through redox reaction (Robertson et al., 2005). Also, toxicity studies using normal human dermal fibroblasts showed that PUT films were completely non toxic. Similarly, Liu et al., 2014 prepared zinc oxide nanocomposite based on methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate by emulsion polymerization technique (Liu et al., 2014). Initially, to improve the dispersion of ZnO in aqueous medium, an anionic polymer (PA30) was used prior to polymerization process. The size of the PA30 modified ZnO was about 329.8 nm with PDI of 0.119. The prepared nanocomposite is thermally stable (300 °C) and crystalline in nature. The prepared nanocomposite was spray coated on leather and checked for fungal growth using Aspergillus flavus as model microbe. The antimicrobial activity of the ZnO nanocomposite is related to its ability to generate reactive oxygen species and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) upon irradiation (Sivakumar et al., 2010; Yi et al., 2019). The properties of the coating were on par with bare polyacrylate based coating and also inhibited the fungal growth (Fig. 6). Further, Bao et al., studied how the effect of nanoparticle morphology ARSTANNERY 73

plays an important role in affecting the properties of compositefilm (Bao et al., 2017). Different ZnO structures viz., rod, hollow fusiform and hollow columnar were synthesized by direct precipitation method using ammonia and combination of solvents. Even though there was no significant impact of morphology on antimicrobial activity, it still influenced water uptake and water vapor permeability of the film. The increase in water vapor permeability of ZnO polyacrylate films was attributed to the increase of free volume in the composite film, 74 ARSTANNERY

inherent cavities of nanoparticles and generation of interfacial pores between the ZnO and the polymeric chain which can let water vapor molecules to move freely in the film (Fam´a et al., 2012). But in contrary, water resistance of the ZnO (rod and columnar)/polymeric films increased due to the neutralization of negative charge of carboxyl group on the polymer and positive charge on the ZnO by coulombic forces of attraction. However, the water resistance of fusiform ZnO decreased due to the

presence of more free hydroxyl group on ZnO microstructure. Additionally, coulombic forces aided better dispersion of the ZnO in polymer which further enhanced the mechanical properties of the film. As discussed earlier, ZnO exhibited good antimicrobial effect as shown in Fig. 7. 3.1.3. Antimicrobial leather based on chitosan incorporation Chitosan (CS) is a linear polysaccharide with partly acetylated (1–4)-2-amino-2-deoxy-ß-D-glucan and is used in a wide range of biomedical applications due to its non-toxicity, film forming ability and antimicrobial activity (Rinaudo, 2006; Ferrero et al., 2015). Fernandes et al., fabricated chitosan based coatings on leather by spraying, calendaring and drumming and also studied its efficacy on antimicrobial activity (Fernandes et al., 2013). Since, the chitosan is soluble in acidic condition, in drum based coating it is offered along with formic acid during fixing of post-tanning chemicals. It was hypothesized that chitosan ionically interacts with the collagen and other post-tanning auxiliaries (Torres-Giner et al., 2008). Ini-

tial pilot scale studies showed drumming based method of impregnation provided better antimicrobial activity than other methods of application. It was found that 1% chitosan in formic acid with an impregnation time of 2 h showed the most optimum antimicrobial action. Same kind of studies were also done by incorporating chitosan formate (MIC 0.25–0.50 mg/mL) into leather as re-tanning agent and showed similar resistance to fungal growth (Ocak et al., 2015). In order to improve the solubility of chitosan in wide spectrum of pH which is necessary for leather manufacturing, Luo et al., grafted polyethylene glycol (PEG-1000) on to chitosan (CS-8000) at different degree (Substitution Degree (SD%): number of PEG groups per 100 amino groups of chitosan determined by TNBS method) such as 4% and 8% (Fig. 8). Proton-NMR spectrum with peaks at chemical shift of 3.1 and 3.6 ppm confirmed the attachment of the PEG to chitosan substrate (Luo et al., 2016). The MIC values were found to be 25, 3.12, and 0.78 mg/ mL for CS, PEG–CS–4%, and PEG–CS–8% and the increasing antibacterial activity was attributed to better solubility of PEG-CS compared to CS. PEG-CS coated leather was prepared by immersing the leather in PEGCS solution for 2 h with stirring and then dried. Visualization of formed coatings under SEM showed a thickness of 21.1 ± 2.2 μm, 23.6 ± 4.5 μm nd 26.4 ± 4.4 μm coats for control and PEG-CS 4% and 8% respectively. Zone of inhibition (ZOI) study showed that the PEG-CS 8% had the highest antimicrobial activity and same is shown in Fig. 9. In addition, the antifouling property of PEG helps preventing the adhesion of microorganism on the leather surface (Saldarriaga et al., 2007).

Further to improve the antimicrobial activity, PEG–CS–8% was used as stabilizing agent in the silver nanoparticle preparation where PEG-CS solution (2 mg/mL) and silver nitrate was added dropwise into sodium borohydride solution to form (PEG–CS–AgNPs) (Liu et al., 2017). Prior to coating, the leather surface was subjected to CO2 plasma treatment to expose more carboxylic groups of collagen to form electrostatic interac-

tion with PEG–CS–AgNPs The antimicrobial property of PEG–CS–AgNPs showed a very low MIC of 0.094 mg/mL. The treated leather exhibited a good ZOI and the bacterial cell membrane destruction by combined action of chitosan and AgNPs was observed when visualized under SEM as shown in Fig. 10.

3.1.4. Antimicrobial leather based on silver nanoparticles incorporation Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are majorly looked upon in this avenue due to its unmatched broad spectrum antimicrobial efficacy (Emam et al., 2013) and good biocompatibility (Stani´c et al., 2011). Even though the mechanism of antimicrobial activity of silver ions is well studied, its not same case when considering AgNPs. Some important modes of the antimicrobial activity of AgNPs are explained below. Hebeish et al., proposed that the antimicrobial activity of AgNPs is due to the conversion of zerovalent Ag to Ag+ ion upon oxidation owing to its extreme sensitivity to oxygen (Hebeish et al., 2011). These ions can react with the negatively charged sulfur containing bacterial cell membrane and allow it to pass in and out of the system affecting the cell viability (Mijakovic et al., 2005; Lin et al., 1998; Zhang et al., 2010; Sathishkumar et al., 2009). Also, this leads to the destabilization of outer membrane and plasma membrane rupture leading to the depletion of intracellular ATP (Lok et al., 2006). Another mechanism involves the formation of R-S-S-R bonds due to the reaction between silver and the sulfhydryl groups of the cell effectively blocking the cellular respiration and eventually causing cell death (Kumar et al., 2004). Kim et al. (2007) proposed the antimicrobial activity can also be attributed to the generation of free radicals that are capable of inhibiting microbial growth. Due to such a diverse mechanism, researchers have found AgNPs based antimicrobial systems as a way forward in developing multifunctional materials. Velmurugan et al., prepared AgNPs with hydrodynamic diameter of 10– 20 nm from silver nitrate using aqueous extract of E. annuus as reducing

agent in a greener way (Velmurugan et al., 2014). The synthesized AgNPs showed a sharp absorption peak at 434 nm due to the surface plasmon resonance and EDAX spectrum showing a strong peak at 3 keV, indicating the presence of silver in elemental form (Lee et al., 2008). The AgNPs along with flower extract were incorporated into chrome tanned leather by ultra sonication process for 20 min. The ZOI and minimum bactericidal concentration of the treated leather against B. linens and S. epidermidis was found to be 5.0 ± 0.1 mm, 1.0 ± 0.7 mm and 30.27 ± 11.08% and 46.63 ± 11.08%. Koizhaiganova et al., synthesized silver doped hydroxyapatite (Ag-HA) and spray coated it on leather surface at different concentrations of Ag (0–5%) along with lacquer and dried (Koizhaiganova et al., 2015). The treated sample was tested against S. aureus, B. subtilis, E. faecalis as Gram positive bacteria, E. coli, S. typhimurium, K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa as Gram negative bacteria and the yeast C. albicans. All microorganisms tested, except C. albicans, were found to be sensitive at concentrations more than 3% Ag. But this paper did not highlight the rationale behind the use of HA. Similarly, Sportelli et al., synthesized AgNPs in situ by photo-reduction of silver nitrate treated leather using UVC light demonstrating a new route for incorporation of antimicrobial agents into leather (Sportelli et al., 2017). Liu et al., synthesized gallic acid stabilized silver nanoparticle (GAAgNPs) of 8.5 nm AgNPs with GA core shell of 3.4 nm (Liu et al., 2018). The activity of GA-AgNPs on S. aureus and E. coli was found to be maximum of 99.9% at MIC of 10 μg/mL. GA-AgNPs were used as a replacement for polyacrylic acid syntans to chrome tanned leather as retanning agents at a

concentration of 0.1% w/w. The hypothesized interaction of GA-AgNPs to leather collagen (Fig. 11a) was confirmed using XPS analysis, wherein the leather exhibited the presence of Ag 3d doublet signal at 368.3 and 374.3 eV corresponding to Ag 3d5/2 and Ag 3d3/2 binding energies with a splitting of 6.0 eV implying the formation of metallic AgNPs on the collagen fiber surface (Zhang et al., 2011). Additionally, due to the deposition of AgNPs, the roughness of collagen fibres increased which led to a hydrophobic behavior with a contact of 113° compared to 0° of pristine leather after 120 s of contact with water droplet. The release of Ag+ ions from re-tanned leather (silver content of 6.4 mg/g of dry leather) was studied using ICP-AES, which showed a maximum release of 0.08% of Ag+ ions/g of leather after being dipped in 10 mL of water for 72 h. The same research group tried coating GA-AgNPs on leather surface at a concentration of 100 ppm by spray coating (Xia et al., 2019). The morphology of treated leather demonstrated that the natural structures of leather were not damaged or affected by the GA-AgNPs spray coating and its interaction with free Cr3+ available in the chrome tanned leather was studied by XPS analysis. O1s XPS spectra of pristine and GA-AgNPs coated leather showed similar peaks at 531.65 eV and 532.58 eV that are attributed to the carboxyl groups (C=O and C–O) of collagen fibers (Liang et al., 2014) and peak at 530.86 eV is attributed to the oxygen atoms in Cr–O component, indicating the coordinated complexation between Cr3+ and carboxyl groups on collagen fibers of the chrome tanned leather (Lan et al., 2018; Lippitz and Hübert, 2005). However, the area under these peaks were high in case of treated leather than pristine which confirms the interaction between carboxyl group of GA-AgNPs and free Cr3+ present in the leather matrix. The GA-AgNPs on leather surface was also observed to be very effective in killing the wide range of microbes along with release of dead cells imparting anti-adhesion behavior to the leather matrix as shown in Fig. 11b. 78 ARSTANNERY

Xiang et al., demonstrated a technique that aimed towards providing antimicrobial activity by combining the mechanism of contact based killing by cationic chitosan and by release of Ag+ ions by silver nanoparticles (Xiang et al., 2018). Chitosan (CS) was coated initially by immersion coating onto the leather followed by a second coat of GA-AgNPs (0.3% w/w). Finally, the GA-AgNPs were cross linked using EDC/NHS at a mole ratio of 1:1.2 with continuous stirring for 6 h at room temperature (Fig. 12). Additionally, this work hypothesized that the fouling of bacterial biomass was averted by the outer CS/GA-AgNPs layer composed with high density of carboxyl groups from gallic acid, which would be negatively charged under neutral wet condition and able to electrostatically repel the dead bacteria that can be removed by simple washing (Wei et al., 2017). The sustained release of Ag+ ions contributed to the long term antimicrobial activity on the leather surface. 3.1.5. Antimicrobial leather based on natural biocide incorporation As essential oils are known natural biocides, they were used in post tanning process as lubricant as such without any treatment. The natural biocides used in the study included oregano oil (Bielak et al, 2017, 2020; Eke Bayramoglu et al., 2006; Bayramoglu, 2007), eucalyptus oil and lavender oil (Širvaitytė et al., 2011), thyme oil (Širvaitytė et al., 2012) and cinnamon oil (Bielak et al., 2016). These treated leather was also found to resist both bacterial and fungal growth over a period of long time. This section also includes the oil treated leathers for the fabrication of scented leather as they are also considered as natural biocides and shows good antimicrobial activity. “To be continued on the next issue”
