A NEW "LEATHER MANIFESTO" PRESENTED AT COP28 The global leather industry united to sign a document reaffirming the positive impact of leather
-Support LCA methodologies that accurately account for the environmental impact of all materials, including end of life properties and the consequences of use and substitution. -Promote ‘slow fashion’, durable products, and items that can be used many times, repaired and refurbished, and last for years., riparati, ricondizionati e che durano per anni.
Ahead of COP28, the U.N. climate conference to be held Nov. 30Dec. 12, 2023, in Dubai, the global leather industry, led by the International Council of Tanners (ICT), has released a new "Leather Manifesto" (the first one was launched at COP26) that has been signed by 28 different associations representing leather around the world, including Leather Naturally, the Federation of European Tanners COTANCE and UNIC Italian Tanneries. A document calling on the UN summit to recognize the positive impact of natural materials, and leather in particular, in addressing the challenge of climate change. “We welcome the new policy and regulations in France and the Netherlands and proposed legislation in the European Union and United Kingdom, and the growing recognition that the action must be taken to reduce the impact of fashion and textiles” says the manifesto. “Natural materials, like leather, offer a viable alternative to the use of fossil fuel-derived synthetics for fashion and other applications. Alternative that meets the demands of emerging policy for circularity in the fashion and textile sector. Greater use of natural materials would create jobs, reduce waste and could be a direct driver of more sustainable agricultural practice. However, this will require a better understanding of the impacts of materials like leather, based on current science and sound data”. Therefore, the signatory organizations once again call on the COP Conference to: -Recognise the cyclical, climate efficient nature of natural fibres and their potential for a positive contribution to reducing the climate impacts of consumer products -Wherever feasible to encourage the use of natural fibres like leather and reduce unnecessary reliance on fossil-fuel-based materials. 8 ARSTANNERY

THE ITALIAN LEATHER RESEARCH INSTITUTE SPEAKS OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY AT ECOMONDO The SOLARIS project aimed at developing sustainable leathers was presented in Rimini
MARCO NOGAROLE, HEAD OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER OF SSIP IN VENETO AT THE ECOMONDO CONFERENCE MARCO NOGAROLE, RESPONSABILE SSIP PER IL VENETO, ALLA CONFERENZA DI ECOMONDO
The Italian Leather Research Institute (SSIP) participated at the 2023 edition of Ecomondo - now recognized as the national and European event for the green transition - with several initiatives. In Rimini, last Nov. 7-10, SSIP presented two posters that summarized the Research Institute's commitment to the circular economy (the event's theme) and presented the work of the "Made in Italy Circular and Sustainable"(PNRR - PE line 11) project during a conference, curated by the Technical Scientific Committee of Ecomondo and Fondazione MICS. We were helped to understand more by Marco Nogarole, Head of Technology Transfer of SSIP in Veneto, who participated in the conference presenting a project entirely aimed at the tanning supply chain promoted by SSIP. Named SOLARIS (Sustainable Options for Leather Advances and Recycling Innovative Solutions), the project is led by SSIP, has as partners the University of Naples Federico II, Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino, University of Padua, University of Brescia, CNR - Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, and has a duration of 36 months (started on January 2023). "The SOLARIS Project is aimed at realizing solutions for the design and development of molecules and materials to be used in the production of new generations of sustainable leathers with high added value, promoting sustainable approaches for the design of new circular materials derived from waste from the tanning industry," Marco Nogarole explains. Also important were the papers presented in the form of posters. The first highlighted the current limitation of the linear economy, which contributes to the rapid consumption of raw materials and huge waste generation with serious drawbacks for the environment, economy and society. The second presented another interesting project, co-financed by the Ministry of Environment and Ecological Transition: "Now Let's Go," No Waste from Leather Goods. An industrial research aimed at reusing processing waste from the production of leather accessories in order to make new products with high added value. 10 ARSTANNERY
Now Let's Go”, No Waste from Leather Goods.

AICC NATIONAL CONFERENCE: LET'S SUPPORT SUSTAINABILITY In San Miniato, Nov. 10, the focus was on rules and the need for shared measurements to calculate the environmental impact of the tanning process, but also on the importance of more effective communication
FRANCA NUTI
"Let's Sustain Sustainability" is the title AICC chose for its 51st National Conference organized in San Miniato, Pisa, at Villa Sonnino on Nov. 10. With the addition of a meaningful subtitle that already alone made explicit the organizers' goal, which was to offer "A snapshot on the world of leather." A conference with a very dense program in which technical and other more divulgative talks were effectively alternated, a total of 12, mostly focused on the analysis of the green path made so far by the Italian tanning industry and possible solutions to face future challenges. After an introduction by AICC President Franca Nuti, who recalled the difficulty of measuring sustainability but also the need to tell the story in the right way, the conference got into full swing with a report by Elisabetta Scaglia of UNIC, who offered an excursus of the efforts of Italian tanneries over the past two decades, culminating in the preparation of a special annual Sustainability Report in which all the progress made by the sector in terms of saving natural resources and also chemicals is recorded. Speaking about rules and the need for shared measurements was Federico Brugnoli of Spin 360, who pointed out that the proliferation of environmental certifications is creating a lot of confusion in the marketplace ("sustainability has become a business"), dwelling in particular on the importance of measuring the life cycle (LCA) of chemical products, which today represent the number one impact factor of the tanning process (if the breeding phase is excluded from the Carbon Fooprint). Of the need to communicate well about one's commitment to sustainability many spoke, from Carlo Luisson (BDO Partner for Confindustria Toscana) to Elena De Nicola. The Tuscan writer - as well as chemist - Marco Malvaldi also did so with a brilliant presentation, offering some interesting reading advice: Primo 12 ARSTANNERY

Levi's "The Periodic System" "to get rid of useless traditions (of the series: it has always been done this way, why change?)" and Judea Pearl's "The book of why" "to avoid correlation errors" by looking at samples that are too small and therefore not meaningful. "In addition, when communicating," Malvaldi said, "you have to remember that the interlocutor does not know the same things that you know and, above all, you need to be able to convey emotions. The conference continued with a focus on certifications proposed by Sabrina Frontini, director of ICEC (Institute of Quality Certification for the Tanning Industry), while Elena Petricci of the University of Siena reported on a study dedicated to the sustainability of catalysis in water. Roberta Gamarino of Stahl explained the suitability of using leather shavings obtained from their organic tanning system as chemical fertilizers and announced the development of a new range of synthetic tannins with low bisphenol content. Instead, Luca Iannarelli of ICAI spoke about a "spectroscopic approach" for the direct analysis of bisphenols, while Antonuccio Cepparrone of FGL International described the advantages of a new time-saving and water-saving powder fatliquor. In his talk, Daniele Bacchi of Italprogetti emphasized how today's technology offers so many opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of the tanning process, starting with bath recirculation systems. Finally, a research contribution came from young Ilaria Quaratesi, former winner of the IULTCS Young Leather Scientist Grant 2023, who presented a study entitled: "From waste to resources: ultrasound-assisted extraction of polyphenols from bark for the tanning industry."

UNPAC, WORKING ON THE LCA OF LEATHER CHEMICALS Looking ahead to the launch of a collective label to enhance the value of more sustainable chemical products in line with the rules of the MADE GREEN IN ITALY scheme
UNPAC, LAVORIAMO ALLA LCA DEI PRODOTTI CHIMICI PER LA PELLE In vista anche il lancio di un marchio collettivo per valorizzare i prodotti più sostenibili in linea con le regole dello schema MADE GREEN IN ITALY There are many UNPAC activities to support the sector. The latest concerns sustainability. The association that brings together Italian chemical tanning companies has participated in the MADE GREEN IN ITALY call for proposals (the voluntary national scheme for the evaluation and communication of the environmental footprint of products) for the definition of Product Category Rules (PCRs), called by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security [MASE], obtaining eligibility for the project presented. The project is aimed at developing PCRs of tanning chemical auxiliaries of these types of products: Enzymatic greening agents; Descaling and macerating agents; Mineral, organic, inorganic and synthetic tanning agents; and Natural and synthetic fatliquors. The PCRs," explains Maurizio Maggioni, UNPAC secretary, "will be preparatory to the development of an unambiguous system for calculating the LCA of leather chemicals for tanneries, and the consequent definition of a UNPAC collective brand, to confirm and promote those products that meet the rules of MADE GREEN IN ITALY. Among the most important activities carried out by UNPAC, which collaborates with all leather sector associations, is the important participation in the UNI and CEN Standardization Tables. In fact, the association, currently chaired by Marco Frediani, contributed to the establishment of the GL1 (Working Group on chemicals for tanneries) within the UNI - Ente Italiano di Normazione table, in order to bring to national standardization the missing methods for the analysis of tanning auxiliaries; subsequently at the European level, the Working Group WG6, the extension at the level of the national table GL1, where UNPAC is active and collaborates with UNIC and Stazione Sperimentale Pelli (Leather Experimental Station), was formed, also strongly desired by UNPAC, within the CEN - European Standardization Body. Both WG1 and WG6 are coordinated by members of the UNPAC Technical Commission. As for the market, today the leather chemicals industry looks to the future with concern. "Market data indicate a negative projection on the business turnovers of the leather supply chain at the international level, as they are adversely affected by the economic downturn due to both the geopolitical situation in some geographic areas, continuing economic and raw material supply tensions, and energy dynamics," UNPAC reports. 16 ARSTANNERY

district to be fully compliant with EU Emissions Directives, while maintaining a positive balance between product performance and environmental concerns, with minimal economic impact on costs through solvent recovery and closed-loop reuse and the use of a by-product of the tanning industry as a suitably activated sorbent.
Reuse KEU, a production waste from the treatment of tanning sludge, within the production cycle of the tanning industry, reducing its environmental impact. This is one of the most interesting aspects of 'ReVOC4LIFE,' the European VOC (volatile organic compounds) abatement project affecting the Santa Croce sull'Arno tanning district. During a press conference held on October 12 at the Consorzio Aquarno (the local depuration plant), the project partners were able to present the results obtained, giving a voice to the researchers directly involved in the project, which is currently about halfway through: the VOC-TAN prototype inserted in BCN Concerie SpA, in Santa Croce sull'Arno, has given promising results with respect to the objectives that the partnership had set for itself already in the laboratory study phase. This is a matter of particular pride for the tanning sector: atmospheric emissions of VOCs and particulates represent the last environmental impact not yet directly managed, albeit monitored and controlled. The plant resulting from the ReVOC4LIFE project has the potential to abate the emission of VOCs and PM10 into the atmosphere, decrease the consumption of water used in the current abatement plant, and recover part of the removed solvents for use, for now, in cleaning the finishing machinery to replace fresh solvents. It will also be able, as shown by the results presented at the conference, to employ as an adsorbent to complete the removal of VOCs a waste from tanning production, KEU, in a circular economy perspective. The challenge of ReVOC4LIFE is to demonstrate a more environmentally sustainable process that will enable companies in the tanning
Entitled "Research, Innovation and Sustainability in the Tanning Sector," the 15th AICC Veneto Technical Conference was held last Sept. 29 at the Mattarello Theater in Arzignano in the presence of about 150 members and several guests. After greetings from Italian leather chemists President Franca Nuti, Secretary Renato Bertoli and local responsible Matteo Massignani, the convention opened with a talk by Simone Tempesti of TFL, who illustrated "The advantages of enzymatic technology in the beamhouse process." Tempesti spoke about the use of amylase, a selective enzyme that opens the fibers of the leather while safeguarding its structure and avoiding swelling problems. "The result," he said, "is a uniform leather with a very fine grain. The floor was then passed to Cesare del Monte of GER who presented the second part of a research work entitled "The analysis of data related to leather characteristics in the beamhouse stages." A project that started from the mapping of areas of the tanning process and aimed at the elaboration of a more efficient and rational production system with a view to industrial traceability. The work continued with a talk entitled "Technological and environmental innovation: scenarios and paths of environmental sustainability in the Veneto tanning district," given by Mirco Zerlottin and Davide Beltrame of Acque Del Chiampo. During the talk, the results of a research carried out in collaboration with the University of Padua were presented, which charts the evolution of the Arzignano tanning district in recent years by measuring its performance in terms of both innovation and sustainability. Total change of topic with the next report by Alberto Martino of Prestige, who spoke about the "Present and future needs of leather used for riding saddles," focusing in particular on some specific requirements
that should be improved, such as abrasion resistance and stinging, along with lowering the environmental footprint of the product by virtue of a particularly sustainability-conscious user. "Chromium tanning with reduced use of chloride and sulfates" was the title of the talk by Giuliano Vallarsa of CHIME, who presented research aimed at obtaining a semi-finished product (wet blue) with characteristics equal to those of a traditional tanning, omitting the pickel operation and using less chloride and sulfate, the results of which demonstrated important economic and environmental advantages. The proceedings continued with Giambattista Martini presenting "A New Paradigm in Wastewater Treatment," a very interesting paper focused on the innovative ETIS reactor (patent pending) developed by SDG and based on alkaline hydrolysis of wastewater "which halves sludge volumes and cuts greenhouse gas emissions." The last paper was presented by Roberta Gamarino of STAHL with a talk entitled "A Contribution to Sustainability and the Circular Economy from Metal Free Shaves." The researcher presented the advantages of using a reactive organic tanning system to produce wet white with the CAS 4156-21-2 molecule (known as Granofin Easy F-90), focusing in particular on the results of new toxicological and ecotoxicological studies carried out on the substance (and compared with glutaraldehyde and phosphonium) from which its absolute harmlessness was shown. In addition, Gamarino explained, leather shavings from the tanning process in question have a high biodegradability (which becomes complete after 5 months) that makes them perfectly suitable for reuse in other sectors, such as as fertilizers and biogas and thermal energy production.

ITALTANNERY PROJECT: THE CHALLENGE TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE TANNERY Open to anyone the new technology platform to promote collaboration and arrive at the definition of new industry standards
ITALTANNERY PROJECT: LA SFIDA VERSO LA CONCERIA SOSTENIBILE Aperta a tutti la nuova piattaforma tecnologica per favorire la collaborazione e arrivare alla definizione di nuovi standard A technological collaboration project between private companies in the field of tannery mechanics. This is not a utopia but a reality that has come to fruition with the birth of ITALTANNERY Project, or rather a platform dedicated to research in which experiences and technological know-how are shared to face together the new challenges of the market, particularly from the point of view of the sustainability of the tanning process. Six brands/companies are involved so far: Bergi, Bertech (a division of Bergi), Erretre, Fratelli Carlessi, GER Elettronica and I-Tech, but registration is open to anyone who wants to join the basic philosophy. It is a forward-looking project that takes its starting point from the realization that alone one does not go too far. "The common idea is to collaborate in order to all together foster real progress in the tanning sector," explains Antonio Galiotto, CEO of Erretre and Fratelli Carlessi. "Obviously, collaboration between companies in the same sector is not easy: opening the doors to each other's technical departments, comparing notes, and sharing results with a view to long-term goals requires a high level of mutual trust, but we founding members are convinced that it is worth it because the challenges that await us are really big”. First and foremost is that of sustainability, the dogma with which every branch of the industry must contend in the coming years. "The mission of the project – reads the official press release – is to ensure ever-improving performance of the tanning process by going into the details of each production phase, identifying its variables and dynamics with the aim of increasing and stabilizing the quality of the leather at the end of each phase. The new approach therefore requires that we must necessarily address topics such as data analysis and traceability, topics in which the founding partners have long since set their development by anticipating future market demands." Defining new standards with which to compare is one of the first steps of the project, which, as an ultimate goal, will develop a technology that will enable the production process to replicate production results by reducing drifts and errors. Research is the core activity of the project, a research for which companies are to compete by providing their know-how to provide tanneries with the best interconnected technological solutions. A special simulation laboratory equipped with the latest technology will be used to analyze the solutions in practice. 20 ARSTANNERY

GSC Group, a leading Italian chemical company, supplying chemical products to the tanning industry, launches a new digital format to inspire their customers and provide an interesting series for everyone to learn from. With its new series of videos (online from December) that show the importance of chemical-physical tests for the world of leather, the company shares, for the first time, its knowledge on technical topics, informing and showing many details that are informative to all. “GSC Group continuously carries out chemical and physical tests on leather for its customers. This gave us the experience to begin working on the idea of an educational project to give not only our customers, but also operators, students and enthusiasts from all over the world, a tool that would enable them to understand the causes, procedures and results of the tests that are required daily, to meet current regulations, particularly with regards to the environmental impact” they explain from the company. The first published series was rewarded with tens of thousands of views across all individual chapters. Three video tutorials from the first series on Fogging Test are currently available. They have been well received by users not only because they give answers to questions in specific technical areas, but also because of the special format. They show, step by step, how to carry out the Fogging Test, which is required above all in the automotive sector, in order to check and measure the phenomenon of 'fogging', i.e. the amount of condensate that is deposited on the glass, making it hard to see through the windscreen and windows, which is caused by volatile organic components from the interior trim. "We are enthusiastic about this challenge. We believe that making available, to everyone, a detailed illustration of many of the tests that customers ask us for and showing our know-how is an added value. The extremely positive feedback shown by the number of views confirms our intuition" says Adriano Serafini, CEO of GSC Group. “The aim is to inform in a useful and practical way and to become a vehicle for the market by offering content that is easy to use and find. GSC wants to give life to an ongoing format that can reach a wider audience”. 26 ARSTANNERY

Entitled "Boosting Transition," the second edition of the Venice Sustainable Fashion Forum (Oct. 26-27, 2023), which FGL International supported as a partner, addressed crucial issues concerning all-round sustainability: The centrality of implementing ESG systems that ensure controlled and protected roadmaps, the scientific approach based on the measurement of socio-environmental impacts along supply chains, the promotion of circular systems that incentivize the recycling and reuse of products and by-products generated by the textile-leather fashion industry, and the promotion of the adoption of Green Technologies and sustainable Best Practices that help generate stable and secure profits for supply chains as well. Present at the summit for the fashion industry's green transition, the FGL International representatives emphasize how "the green transition requires us to continue to pursue ethical and responsible behavior with responsibility and conviction. The leather supply chain, where we were among the representatives in this edition of the Forum, needs each of its actors to be a building block in the construction of a sustainable tomorrow and responsible fashion." FGL International wants to be an active part of this change and that is why it has chosen to be part of a working table together with Gruppo
Mastrotto, Assomac and many important brands “to give centrality to leather, reaffirm its value as a naturally circular material and at the same time suitable for recycling and reuse projects capable of lengthening its end of life”. FGL International - they still report from the company - is at a crucial turning point in its path of development of the issues described here and will continue its path of adoption of existing Best Practices for the production and marketing of retanning Bio-polymers, Bio-solvents and Bio-polyurethanes, aiming to implement new R&D projects for the realization of safer and lower Carbon Footprint alternative tannages. Finally, thanks to the MISE co-funded project regarding the New PEFCR Product Categories, FGL will carry out the first Life Cycle Assessement estimates of some chemical products, using the new rules based on rules and measurement parameters shared among various actors in the supply chain. "The construction of a leather item that is beautiful, pleasing to the touch and representative of the luxury icon will thus be achieved through sustainable tools that take into account ethical and environmental aspects, and through governance that manages the entire life cycle, up to final disposal." they conclude from FGL International.

WELCOME
FOCUS ON THE ITALIAN LEATHER SUPPLY CHAIN That of leather, is the core business of most of the big Luxury brands, coming to represent as much as 50% and 70% of their turnover. The Italian leather supply chain is the only one that encompasses, at the highest level of excellence, all the links of the value chain in a single territory, within specialized districts. The aggregate leather sector (tannery, footwear, leather goods, and technology) represents an important slice of Italian manufacturing: it employs a total of more than 130 thousand people (4% of the Italian manufacturing sector), produces more than 30 billion euros in turnover and an added value of 6 billion, or 3% of the added value generated by Italian manufacturing. In 2022, Italy was reconfirmed as the leading value exporter in Europe for supply chain technologies, tanned leather, leather goods and footwear. Italian savoir-faire is recognized worldwide: the value of exports of the four supply chains in 2022 amounted to about 27 billion euros (+15% compared to 2021). Of these, about 45% were footwear and 40% leather goods, with diversified destinations to Europe, the United States, South Korea and China among the top destinations. The trade balance is around 15 billion euros (1.7 billion for tannery, 7.2 billion for leather goods, 5.4 billion for footwear and 300 million for technology). We are talking about a "national champion."
Edited by The European House – Ambrosetti

PROMOTE INNOVATION IN THE FASHION SUPPLY CHAIN With Maria Vittoria Brustia, President of Assomac and of the Simac Tanning Tech event, we evaluate the challenges that the sector is facing, sometimes with urgency.
What is urgent to take the path you are indicating? “The tax exemption of investments in innovation is strategically relevant, just as was done with Industry 4.0. We hope that the initiative will be renewed for all future investments in digital, AI (artificial intelligence) and IOT (internet of things). We must also define shared strategies with the Italian tanning, leather goods and footwear industry to compete even better on the market while respecting the environment, people and company solidity. We must be aware of the risks and impacts on the supply chain in allowing others, in places far from our districts, to promote measurability and traceability systems. We can't afford it. Finally, we cannot continue to be the second largest manufacturer in Europe without even having a direct voice on our supply chain interests in Brussels.”
MAURIZIO FORTE, CENTRAL DIRECTOR FOR EXPORT AND MADE IN ITALY SECTORS OF AGENZIA ICE, BETWEEN ROBERTO VAGO, GENERAL MANAGER ASSOMAC AND MAVI BRUSTIA, PRESIDENT OF ASSOMAC AND SIMAC
They have been two very hot months for the world of technology and innovation dedicated to the fashion sector. Simac Tanning Tech, the most important international fair in this field, the UITIC World Congress of footwear technicians and the Assembly of the relevant Italian Association were held. All opportunities to focus on the positive aspects, critical issues, opportunities and challenges that await the sector. Let's take stock with Maria Vittoria Brustia, President of Assomac and of the Simac Tanning Tech event. Let’s start with the challenges… “For us the most important challenge is to consolidate the implementation of innovative technologies in the production chains, starting with the fashion system. Co-designing the manufacturing of the future means doing our part in an even more collaborative way in the supply chains, proposing advanced integrations into production processes. Integration with artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, robotics and augmented reality already allow us to optimize production processes, allowing us 'humans' to focus on activities with high added value. Furthermore, co-design allows us to develop more flexible and agile production chains, capable of quickly adapting to market changes. Fashion tells us that the manufacturing of the future requires greater customization of products, offering of new dedicated services and production tailored to customer needs.” 36 ARSTANNERY
What do you have in mind internationally? “We must seek value and play an aggregating role in international networks, what many call long supply chains, as well as primary players in local supply chains looking at the all-round quality of work. Supporting processes and presence on foreign markets has always been our primary aim. Directly with our international fair Simac Tanning Tech, and with the many foreign collective exhibitions which, thanks to the invaluable support work of ITA-Agenzia, have made it possible in the last year to promote worldwide over 350 companies in the technology and components leather sector. Indirectly through our International Polytechnic for Industrial and Economic Development, PISIE which we share with our cousins at ACIMIT, aimed at promoting the culture of technology, among many, in the territories of India, Vietnam, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, where the workers and managers grow professionally and learn the correct work processes while respecting the environment, society and people." What competitive advantages can Italian technology still boast in the world? “Competition doesn't just compete with the lowest price; it fights with a country system that, from the granting of visas to after-sales assistance, is able to accompany the needs of a sector such as that of machinery production. The latest Ingenium report, drawn up by Federmacchine and Confindustria, confirms that Italy competes with nations such as Germany, Japan and China. However, although many Chinese products belong to the same product categories, particularly in our sector, these are often qualitatively inferior to their Italian counterparts. It follows that Italian exporters, despite the marked overlap in Chinese shares, could obtain better results if they were able to reach their customers in emerging markets more effectively, focusing on the quality of the products and services offered. And the concept of 'services' is crucial. The culture of servitization as a quality lever is fundamental.”
MARKET
Events continue to happen around the world that do not speak in favor of an export-oriented sector. How to react? “The black swan of the pandemic has forced the fashion sector to reinvent itself and adapt to a new reality, as well as inflationary pressures and conflicts. We would like to use co-designing as an antidote against any black swan. Black swans are increasingly frequent and the only response to surprise and shock is the preparation of an economic and productive network made of cooperation and collaboration. A supply chain made of relationships and dialogue, analysis and punctual responses, inspiration and concreteness.” The Simac Tanning Tech event will celebrate its 50th edition in 2024… “We will celebrate this important birthday of the international fair of machinery and technologies for the tanning, footwear and leather goods industries with an edition full of novelties. We imagine a fair outside the fair and great involvement of our Associates and the Assomac community.” What trends have emerged since the last edition? “Attention to environmental sustainability, the digitalisation of production processes and the optimization of company organisation.” Was it a successful edition? “The numbers speak clearly: Simac Tanning Tech recorded over 6,500 certified presences, of which approximately 40% came from abroad, with 20 international delegations supported by ITA-Agency. Compared to the last edition, there was an increase of 37% in visitors and 14% in exhibitors, brands and institutions.”
ARSTANNERY 37
MARKET
Cosa avete in mente a livello internazionale?
Come reagire?

THE FUTURE OF MANUFACTURING IN LEATHER SUPPLY CHAINS How technological evolution must accompany the evolution of business models.
Excerpt from The House - Ambrosetti report presented during the ASSOMAC Assembly 2023 The leather sector, and the fashion industry in general, is experiencing a moment of overall change, due to several variables. On the one hand, the growing complexity in management and production in response to increasingly varied and rapid market demands; on the other hand, the progressive evolution of manu40 ARSTANNERY
facturing companies from artisan to industry, as well as the need for massive investment in training, innovation and adaptation to the demands of sustainability. Undoubtedly, this scenario of change may provide an opportunity to strengthen the link between manufacturing companies and technology companies, which will have to act as translators of needs and development partners, capable of ensuring customer proximity and alignment with market demands and a tailor-made approach. for greater responsiveness and reduced lead times, labor substitution for lower value-added activities, and the demand for greater transparency and sustainability. What are the biggest barriers to investment in technology? Although there is widespread curiosity and enthusiasm for product and process innovation, companies face some difficulties in investing in it. These include the presence of reference figures within the company of a non-technical nature, which present dif-
ficulties in identifying potential technological solutions, and reduced propensity of the sector for innovation, largely due to the traditional conception of Made in Italy Fashion as linked to artisan and strongly manual crafts. Innovation is not perceived as a process of continuous improvement but more as a response to problems and challenges, and there is not a full awareness of the benefits that technology can bring in the supply chain. Added to this is the fact that, frequently, technical figures, often highly specialized, fail to communicate the ARSTANNERY 41

"vision" of the direction in which companies will have to move in terms of innovation, limiting themselves to promoting incremental innovations. What will be the characteristics of the factory of the future? The factory of the future will be based on state-of-the-art machinery with a high level of automation, capable of ensuring flexibility and responsiveness in production, but also optimizing energy consumption and minimizing waste products. An agile and dynamic factory where continuous training can be offered to its employees to enable them to constantly update themselves on new technologies and market trends. Finally, another key aspect of factories will be interconnection, which will enable each machine to communicate not only with management/operational systems but also with the entire network of machines, and which will encourage greater customization. Training as a lever of innovation along the value chain It has been shown that within the leather supply chain there is a generalized difficulty in finding human resources averaging 49 percent, which in the case of leather goods reaches 61 percent and is higher in the case of technical cutting figures. The main causes include the absence of resources available to enter the sector (58 percent) and inadequate preparation (36 percent). Proposals for improvement for the industry's training system go through 4 levers: communication, orientation, training of trainers, and future prospects. The role of technology in the push toward greater sustainability of the leather supply chain The future of technology will be as an enabler of sustainability and the creation of highly innovative and environmentally friendly factories. This will come through the collection of primary and secondary data to support the measurement of the sustainability performance of factories. While the push for sustainability coming from downstream brands and the marketplace is gradually increasing, there is also an increase in measurement efforts and a growing commitment to achieving decarbonization goals. Technology can be a valuable ally in this regard, facilitating the collection of data on product characteristics, production methods and amounts of waste generated. However, downstream companies, even if vertically integrated, manifest some difficulty in collecting and using data due to both the absence or scarcity of IT tools (mostly software) in line with their needs and built ad hoc, and the absence of established data collection models. It is evident that we are still in a phase of testing and building sustainability measurement and management

models: each brand and company uses different performance measurement models already on the market. In this scenario, having a reliable tool that can measure the performance of a piece of machinery in an unambiguous and standardizable way such as the Green Plate is undoubtedly a first element to make the job easier for manufacturing companies. Technology companies will then be able to position themselves and propose their solution to quantify the CO2 emitted by the process and give a solution to codify at least part of the production process.

FONTE: ELABORAZIONE THE EUROPEAN HOUSE – AMBROSETTI SU DATI UNIONCAMERE ANPAL, 2023
Held in the iconic Hall of Columns of the "Leonardo da Vinci" Museum of Science and Technology in Milan, the Annual Meeting of Assomac, the Association of Manufacturers of Footwear, Leather Goods and Tannery Technologies, was held. "Co-designing the Manufacturing of the Future. Technologies for the new supply chain" is the title chosen for 2023. The goal was to emphasize the importance of consolidating the implementation of innovative technologies in manufacturing supply chains, starting with the fashion industry. Co-designing the manufacturing of the future means working even more collaboratively in supply chains, proposing advanced integrations in production processes. "The importance of co-designing is no longer postponed," said Maria Vittoria Brustia, President of Assomac, during her opening remarks, recalling that in this year the Association has embarked on a journey to enhance and bring the leather supply chain closer together, with a view to greater CO-PROJECTING. In his greeting, Maurizio Forte, Central Director for Export and Made in Italy Sectors of Agenzia Ice, reiterated the importance and commitment of the Agency in supporting the international promotion of the leather supply chain. Bruno Bettelli, President of Federmacchine, confirmed the lights and shadows of the entire manufacturing machinery sector. Projections for the coming 2024 predict a slowdown that depending on the sub-sectors has an impact on exports and domestic orders. In addition, Bettelli believes that this slowdown may find an end by next 2025. Also, during the opening institutional greetings came a message from the Minister of Business and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso, who highlight-
ed the role of manufacturing excellence played by Assomac's members in the fashion sector, a leading sector of foreign trade and Made in Italy. The Minister did not fail to highlight all possible support in this path of common growth of the leather supply chain, as an ecosystem "this year the theme chosen for the Assembly is about the value of technologies in the future of manufacturing according to a supply chain logic that the Government recognizes as the key to adapt to the great changes taking place." Combining the Italian tanning, leather goods, footwear, and leather machinery industries, The European House - Ambrosetti has calculated a 2022 turnover of 30 billion euros, with an added value of six billion (discussed in more detail in another article in this issue). As reiterated by Flavio Sciuccati, Senior Partner di TEHA: "The coexistence of fashion and luxury excellence in leather and mechanics for manufacturing and craft systems in the Italian system is a uniqueness and strength worldwide! Starting from this assumption, we can build our international narrative and strategic role for the future." The work of the Assembly continued with a round table discussion in which Chiara Mastrotto, President and CEO of the Mastrotto Group, and Attila Kiss, CEO of the Florence Group, took part. The theme of the supply chain in a perspective of sustainability was the protagonist: supply chain and investments with a view to leather traceability together with Chiara Mastrotto; alliances and supply chains together with Attila Kiss, who has managed over the years to create a production hub that has 28 companies with 3,600 employees. Overall, an alarming fact: the leather supply chain experiences the

strong and generalized difficulty of finding human resources. Among the main causes is certainly the absence of available resources to be placed in the sector and inadequate preparation that could be alleviated with a series of dedicated solutions through forms of communication to young people, dedicated courses of ITS and greater cohesion of the supply chain itself in promoting job opportunities. The event concluded with a panel consisting of President Maria Vittoria Brustia, Vice-President Mauro Bergozza, and Vice-President Cristiano Paccagnella who drew the day's conclusions. During the final greetings, the President wanted to thank Assomac's General Director, Roberto Vago, who will end his working relationship with Assomac at the end of the year. comparto dei produttori di macchinari per il manufatturiero.

ARSTANNERY 45

THE “M.O.Re” SOFTWARE, THE BEATING HEART OF ERRETRE DRUMS The system optimizes the management of the milling department
Technological progress in leather processing is undoubtedly fostered by the R&D activities of cutting-edge companies such as Erretre, which is constantly engaged in the development of innovative technologies and advanced software solutions capable of bringing the tanning industry to the highest standards of automation, control and repeatability of finished product quality and eco-sustainability of production cycles. Since the 1990s, Erretre has focused its R&D work on automation, introducing, for example, proprietary printed electronic boards to collect data automatically and digitally. The approach has continued with the development of increasingly precise and accessible solutions, such as automatic hide unloading systems and computerized control panels. 46 ARSTANNERY
Extraordinarily important innovations are then the software developed by Erretre, the real heart of the machines. An example of this is M.O.Re, the beating heart of Erretre's milling departments. M.O.Re (Milling Organisation Resources) is the software created by Erretre in 2003 to improve the management of the milling drums department. This advanced scheduler allows customers to optimise production planning, ensure direct control of each machine, centralise the creation of recipes, the management and planning of milling operations. By collecting and analysing production data in real time, the software monitors the smooth running of the entire plant and provides a detailed report on its productivity.
TECHNOLOGY
Thanks to continuous research and the acquisition of know-how, M.O.Re manages operations to guarantee high precision performance in a way that is accessible to all operators. Erretre's expertise and analytical capabilities act as a filter, an interpreter, between the enormous variety of parameters that animate and condition the results of the milling phases and the operator, making the automation usable and enabling him to use the technology in a simple and intuitive way. The automation of leather making production technology has a positive impact on the final appearance of the products and therefore on their commercial success. Software tools such as M.O.Re, useful for a complete and simplified control of the leather finishing process, enhance the human analytical capacity: with Erretre's M.O.Re software, the operator's synergy with the machine is optimised and aimed at obtaining the best possible result in terms of quality and uniformity.
Attentive to consumption and sustainability, in recent years Gemata has developed a range of machines capable of minimizing the effects on the environment, such as the GREENFINISH finishing lines and the GREENSTARS and GREENSTAR roller machines. It is precisely the latter that is making a name for itself in the market for its winning features. GREENSTAR is a roller machine that finishes whole and half cowhides in reverse mode thanks to its 3400 and 3800mm working spans. "With GREENSTAR it is possible to apply the full range of finishing chemicals: impregnation resins, oils and waxes, filler and prebottoms, primers, covers and water-based fixatives. The new model guarantees extreme coverage and precision for all types of applications," explain the Veneto-based company. The machine can boast of a patented system that keeps the tension of the belt constant in all its positions, prolonging its durability and reliability over time; it is also able to ensure more and better application of the chemical and, consequently, excellent coating precision and finishing quality. The large-diameter counterpart roller and the constant-tension belt make it possible to detach the skins without any kind of roller conveyor or mechanical device and eliminate any contamination of the flesh side of the hides. The roller is constantly kept clean by a scraper blade that prevents residual dirt from adhering that would ruin the quality of the coating. The combination of large-diameter contrast cylinder and thick rubberized conveyor belt ensures optimum surface coverage and precision that has not been achieved by any machine with a rubberized conveyor belt to date. 48 ARSTANNERY

A single machine to measure both wet blue and crust or finished leathers. What appears to represent a real and useful innovation for tanneries was first launched by Selin Projects at Simac Tanning Tech 2023. The Bologna-based company has managed to develop a new “patent pending” optoelectronic system that allows to "read" any type of real leather, both wet and dry and of any color, on a practical and compact continuous conveyor belt, an achievement that until now seemed impossible. Strengthened by this result, achieved after years of research on how to advantageously apply electronic technology in relation to the specific characteristics of leather, Selin Projects simultaneously presents the Leathertronic™ brand which embodies this concept and which will distinguish a new range of products. "Without going into details, which for obvious reasons we prefer not to reveal, I can say that this new system, the first-born of the Leathertronic™ concept, is based on the response that different materials present to the emission of electromagnetic waves of the light spectrum. This is truly a breakthrough technology, which allow us to detect the surface of each type of leather with great accuracy, regardless of its state of finish and its degree of humidity,” explains engineer Filippo Gosio at the helm of Selin Projects. At the Milan fair, the new measuring machine was presented in size 1,8 mt but it will be available in a plurality of versions and sizes, suitable for use in different phases of the tanning process and beyond.

BERGI, CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTS TO ITS FLAGSHIP TECHNOLOGIES The Veneto-based company displayed some of its most successful equipment at the fair, such as the Starlux press and the Attiva belt buffing machine
THE PRESS STARLUX SV LA PRESSA STARLUX SV
As always, the Bergi booth at Tanning Tech was very crowded, hosting the Veneto-based company's most cutting-edge technologies again this year. The center of attention was the Starlux SV, the "queen" of rotary presses for ironing, satin finishing and continuous printing. "It is a machine that is giving us a lot of satisfaction and has been in great demand lately, especially by those who work with leathers for high fashion or otherwise high quality products," explains Leonardo Bergozza. The SV model, in particular, is ideal for continuous ironing, sandblasting and light embossing. This is an ideal machine for those who need 50 ARSTANNERY
to iron with pressure any kind of leather and soft leathers without compacting them, to process waxed leathers without changing their colours, to give an excellent glazing effect on the tops of the embossed leathers or shine the top of milled leathers. The spotlight is also on the Attiva through-feed belt buffing machine, another Bergi bestseller, here offered in the 1800 version, a machine created to process items that require cold processing and increased dust discharge; thus ideal for vegetable-tanned leathers, oiled leathers, automotive putty splits and even coil material.
TECHNOLOGY
"The buffing machine has been further improved, both with respect to the leather introduction system and the workbench. In addition, new brushless motors have also been fitted, offering a higher level of precision in thickness adjustment." The buffing machine was combined with the Ariosa through-feed dedusting machine, a key plant in all those production steps that generate residues such as buffing and dry shaving. Installed at the exit from the dust remover was Compact, the traditional stacker for depositing hides on a pallet or stand on which was mounted Ger Elettronica's BE-Trace hide recognition and tracking system, which allows stacking marked hides with the product tracking code at the end of the line.

TODESCO: CONSUMPTION REDUCED BY 73% WITH PURPLE SYSTEM Paolo Todesco explains how the innovative finishing process that allows leathers to be dried at low temperatures using UV rays as catalysts came about
PAOLO AND GIORGIO TODESCO AT THEIR BOOTH IN SIMAC TANNING TECH 2023 PAOLO E GIORGIO TODESCO ALLO STAND DEL SIMAC TANNING TECH 2023
One of the most significant technological innovations presented at the latest edition of Tanning Tech is undoubtedly the Purple system, the subject of a patent filed on four continents by the Vicenza-based company Todesco, known for producing finishing lines used daily in the world's best tanneries. What is it all about? Purple is a brand new finishing system that, first and only in the world, allows leathers to be dried at low temperature using UV rays as activators and process accelerators, the result of a study developed by Todesco in collaboration with GSC Group as chemical partner. Together, the two Veneto-based companies have succeeded in developing a system that introduces important benefits over the traditional finishing process, primarily that of eliminating temperature as a catalyst in the finishing process and consequently significantly lowering energy consumption in the drying phase of fixatives and cross-linked topcoats. To better understand the scope of the innovation, we put a few questions to Paolo Todesco, CEO of the Creazzo, Vicenza-based company. How did the idea for Purple come about? "As machine manufacturers, we have always been at the side of tanneries to understand their problems and meet their needs. One of the major critical issues that emerged last year in our sector, as indeed in all others, was the rise in energy costs, which wiped out companies' margins, curbing investment. This difficult situation spurred us to accelerate the development of a project that we had started in 2020 during the pandemic and that involves a major reduction in energy consumption, precisely the Purple system, which represents a key evolution of the fin52 ARSTANNERY
ishing process. An innovation that may need time to be understood and implemented, but whose effectiveness is completely evident." What are the main advantages offered by this new system? "The reduction in the temperature required for the drying of topcoats and fixatives (around 35° C) leads to an extraordinary reduction in energy costs: according to average data, the estimated drop is 73% and is accompanied by a similar reduction in emissions and therefore in the Carbon Fooprint of the entire process (-75%). The advantages also affect the quality of the leather, which, finished at low temperatures, evidently suffers less stress and preserves its soft and natural characteristics. Not only that, we have solved some problems in the process such as the stickiness of the leather and the sintering effect during spraying." What was the role of GSC Group? "Todesco developed the technology and the process, while GSC Group developed a range of specific chemicals, with very low VOC content, that guarantee outstanding performance especially when it comes to automotive leathers that require very high rub resistance and high elastic properties." Does the introduction of this system imply a revolution of the traditional finishing process for the tannery? "I would say that more than anything else it implies a change in mentality. From an operational point of view, these are not earth-shattering changes although obviously the implementation of a new working system takes its time. However, we need to look at the benefits, which are so important that they make up for any effort, as the tests done at our partner tanneries with which we are now in the industrialization phase have shown."
TECHNOLOGY
What will be the next step? "We want to expand the application spectrum of the system to leathers of all types. So far Purple has been tested on leathers destined for the automotive segment, but we intend to fine-tune it for all other application sectors as well, from footwear to leather goods to furniture." What feedback did you get during the Milan fair? "There was a lot of interest because obviously those who come to Simac Tanning Tech, the only trade show where you can still see tannery machines on display, are interested in seeing innovations that can solve the knots in the production process. In this sense, the Purple system offers just what the market needs today: an efficient solution that saves energy and is environmentally friendly."
I vantaggi
PAOLO TODESCO AND ADRIANO SERAFINI, CEO OF GSC GROUP PAOLO TODESCO E ADRIANO SERAFINI, CEO DI GSC GROUP
ARSTANNERY 53

After the 3, the 5, and then the 7-cylinder, Escomar Italia is launching the 8-cylinder. The new electrohydraulic through-feed sammying machine for wet blue, model PCR-e8, meets precise market needs. "It has been realized that it is better to have a more powerful machine that works at 70 percent of its capacity, rather than a smaller one forced to always work at maximum power, which means both more mechanical stress and more consumption of material, such as felts," Mariano Ferrari, Escomar sales manager, tells us. Compared with previous models, the new sammying machine features an innovative pressing system, fully controlled by hydraulic power unit, capable of developing the highest pressure power ever seen on the market but also great precision. In fact, the hydraulic system regulates the drying pressure on 4 independent bridges with 8 pressure points to ensure uniform drying even at low pressures. Such a drying force allows tanneries to work at high speeds (up to 28 mt/min with significant production benefits) with lower energy consumption.

The result is a traditional but newly designed machine that ensures great efficiency in the operation of removing water from the hides, against important energy savings compared to similar machines. How did this model come about? "We wanted to renew the traditional RM setting out machine by aiming for greater versatility of use. All the motors are now electric and allow operators to work with some freedom in terms of speed and proximity to the hide," Francesco Dalla Valle, a young member of the third generation of the Bauce family, tells us. ARSTANNERY 59

STENI SYSTEM, FEWER DEFECTS WITH THE OPTIMA BUFFING MACHINE The machine has been optimized with the introduction of a new blade assembly that is gentler on the leather and reduces waste
A major new improvement affects Steni System's Optima buffing machine, a machine for through-feed buffing all types of leather using abrasive paper wound on a cylinder. "We were particularly concerned with reducing the marks and cuts that sometimes ruin leathers during processing due to various causes such as inclination, differences in thickness, processing system, and so on. Thanks to some modifications and an innovative optimized blade unit, today our machine is able to grind the entire surface of the leather without producing any cuts, either in or out of the machine, thus obtaining a more accurate production, with far fewer defects and therefore very little waste," explains the entrepreneur at the head of Steni System, Stefano Poletto. The heavy steel structure allows the use of thicker rollers and therefore more powerful motors that make it perform better and ensure less wear and tear. The transport roller is rubber covered or with a sleeve with high elasticity and in different degrees of hardness to better suit the type of work required and with adjustable speed via inverter and display.

An updated and evolved model of the historic TEX boarding machine was exhibited at the last Simac Tanning Tech Show in Milan at the booth of Best Srl, the Montopoli in Val d’Arno (Pisa)-based manufacturer of Soldani SF brand leather processing machinery. This is an important strategic move for one of the industry's historic brands at the Italian and global level, which boasts more than 90 years of history and will celebrate a century of existence at the end of this decade. The company was founded, to be exact in 1930, by Gino Soldani and later managed by his son Franco until 2004; now at the helm are his grandchildren Enrico and Silvia, in what represents the third generation of an extraordinary history also from the family point of view. Over the decades, the evolution of technologies has enabled the company to develop and export worldwide state-of-the-art and always upto-date machinery for processing both bovine, goat and sheep skins and exotic fine leathers: polishing, buffing, fleshing, shaving and glazing machines for reptiles and crocodiles stand alongside historical models revisited by the company from a technological perspective. Among them is the TEX boarding machine, which includes models in working width sizes 2000, 2500 and 3000 that can, by means of the boarding cylinders that break the grain of the leather, create on the leather a special slightly crinkled texture with a parchment effect, soft to the touch and pleasing to the eye. The evolved model of TEX boarding machine was made by evoking the craftsmanship and quality of the work of the past by combining it with the modern technology of today. The machine was studied in detail and made so that it would be easy to use for the operator and to target both those who make a niche article, the crinkled texture, and those who want to give softness to leather or recover unused stock through a special process. "Thanks to a special procedure devised by Remo Petroselli, general manager of Chimont International Spa, who has devised a special finishing system, it is possible to recover even lower-quality leathers: on third- and fourth-grade leathers, a film, produced exclusively by Chimont Spa, is applied that melts and penetrates inside the leather.

THERMAL CHARACTERIZATION OF LEATHERS TANNED BY METAL SALTS AND VEGETABLE TANNINS You can find the first part of this article on the previous issue of ArsTannery
and propenyl C3H5+ fragments also contributes to the corresponding ion curves to a moderate extent. The formation of nitriles and hydrocarbons can be explained mainly by the scission of the proline and hydroxyproline residues of collagen as illustrated in Fig. 3. However, other CH-NH segments of the polypeptide chains can also produce nitriles during thermal decomposition. A shoulder on the main peak of the DTG curve of LCR sample (Fig. 1b) can be observed between 400 and 500 °C. This mass loss could derive from the release of hydrogen cyanide, acetonitrile, and hydrocarbons, which show the most intensive formation in this temperature range from LCR sample (Fig. 2c and d). Furthermore, the formation of some other products shifts to higher temperatures and presents a shoulder on their evolution curves (e.g., pyrrole) above 400 °C. These observations can be explained by the catalytic effect of chromium, which has been studied in detail and will be discussed in the following section. As Fig. 3 demonstrates, the pyrrole content of the evolved pyrolyzates (Fig. 2g) originates from the proline and hydroxyproline amino acid residues found in large quantities in collagen: 13 and 10 mol%, respectively [15]. Based on these curves, the temperature range of the thermal degradation of leather can be defined more precisely because the release of pyrrole occurs via the chain scission of the polypeptide molecules. As Fig. 2g shows, the pyrrole evolution from parchment is the most intensive between 300 and 400 °C. The narrow, intense peak of pyrrole reflects the fast decomposition of the protein content of PAR, which is consistent with the shape of DTG curve. Moreover, the high intensity is in accordance with the fact that PAR has the highest collagen concentration among the studied samples (Table 2). The temperature of the maximal evolution rate of pyrrole from PAR is at about 20–40 °C lower than that of leather samples, in agreement with the lower thermal stability of PAR compared to the tanned leathers. The evolution of pyrrole above 400 °C is more intensive from LCR and LCM2 samples, which contain the highest amount of chromium (Table 3); their highest thermal stability confirms the thermal stabilization effect of chromium. The sulfur dioxide evolution in Fig. 2f indicates two main sulfur sources from most of the samples. The first peak (200–300 °C) belongs to the residual sulfonate surfactants used in the vegetable tanning process applying mimosa (samples LCM1, LCM2 and LMM) [25], [31]. The main peak from 300 °C to 500 °C is released from the sulfate ion remnants of the leathers originating from chromium sulfate used in the tanning process or from ammonium sulfate used during deliming. The small peak with a maximum at around 480 °C from the sample LAY originates from decomposing alum (potassium aluminum sulfate). The parchment sample released no measurable sulfur dioxide since the
sulfur-containing chemicals (i.e. sodium sulfide used for accelerating hair removal) were completely washed away. Nevertheless, the sulfur content of PAR sample originates from the methionine residues, which decompose to small organic molecules like methanethiol (not shown here). This is in agreement with the low sulfur content measured in parchment by ICP-OES (Table 3). Fig. 2h presents the evolution curves of m/z 94 ions, which can be attributed to phenol formation above 300 °C. Based on the MS fragment ions, the narrow peak released between 220 and 300 °C from parchment was identified as dimethyl disulfide [32] that could be formed from two methionine amino acid residues of collagen via side group scission and recombination of two radicals. The evolution of phenol molecules is slightly more intensive from the chromium-tanned leather (sample LCR) as the MS curve shows (Fig. 2h), which can be explained by condensation reactions of the polypeptide chain in addition to the scission from the tyrosine amino acid residues [19]. The cleavage of side groups is an important decomposition route of collagen as illustrated in Fig. 3 where toluene derives from phenylalanine amino acid residue. The evolution of m/z 110 can be observed in Fig. 2i. This m/z value can be attributed to two compounds from the parchment and leather samples: resorcinol and pyrrole-2-carboxamide. Resorcinol evolves from leathers tanned with mimosa (LCM1 and LMM); therefore, it is an indicator of this tanning agent [25]. The intensities of these curves are low so the signal of the m/z 110 from the sample LCM2 is under the detection limit because this sample contains less mimosa (and more chromium) comparing to LCM1. In the case of PAR, the evolution profile of m/z 110 indicates the formation of pyrrole-2-carboxamide as determined by Py-GC/MS. 3.5. TG/MS analysis of chromium sulfate treated parchment samples As Fig. 2 demonstrates, chromium had significant impact on the volatile product formation during the thermal degradation of leathers. This phenomenon was studied systematically on chromium sulfate treated parchment samples. TG/MS measurements were carried out in triplicates on the samples treated with chromium sulfate in five different concentrations. Fig. 4 presents the TG and DTG curves of the chromium sulfate treated parchment samples. The effect of the increasing chromium content on the thermal properties is clearly visible (Fig. 4a). The amount of the carbonaceous residue increases with the increasing chromium sulfate content of the samples, which can be explained partly by the chromium residue itself in the char and partly by the catalytic effect
FIG. 3. PROPOSED DECOMPOSITION ROUTES OF COLLAGEN DURING THE THERMAL DECOMPOSITION OF PARCHMENT AND LEATHERS.
ARSTANNERY 75
RESEARCH
of chromium sulfate on the char formation. As shown in Table 5, the increase in char formation due to the effect of chromium sulfate catalysis is growing with the chromium content, and reaches 8% increase in the case of 5% chromium content. A trend correlated with the chromium concentration can be observed on the DTG (Fig. 4b) curves, as well. The maximal rate of thermal degradation (DTGmax) is decreasing with the increasing chromium content and a shoulder appears at around 450 °C. The main decomposition step of the parchment starts at around 200 °C; however, the ascending sections of the DTGs are shifting to higher temperatures in parallel with the increasing chromium content and this phenomenon proves the beneficial effect of chromium sulfate on the thermal stability. The peak shoulder between 400 and 500 °C is in harmony with the increased evolution of a few products as discussed below (Fig. 5). Fig. 5 presents the evolution profiles of the most important volatile products affected by the presence of chromium sulfate in the parchment sample. Clear trends are shown on the evolution curves of these products as a function of chromium ion content of the samples. As discussed above (see Fig. 3), ammonia and carbon dioxide can be released after the hydrolysis of the amide bonds of collagen chains. Fig. 5a and f reveal that the intensities of these products are decreasing in the main decomposition stage up to 400 °C, while the water evolution (Fig. 5b) is enhanced with increasing chromium content of the samples. Thus, it can be concluded that chromium promotes the release of water and reduces the hydrolysis of the polypeptide bonds. This finding is extremely relevant for explaining the thermal stability of collagen in leather tanned with chromium salts. So far, collagen stabilization with tanning agents was evaluated by comparative thermal analysis methods: differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) [33], [34], [35], [36], [37], [38], thermogravimetric analysis (TG) [39], [40], [41], and measurement of conventional shrinkage temperature (Ts) [42], [43], [44], but without offering explanations regarding the thermal stabilization mechanism. It should be noted that anhydrous chromium sulfate decomposes at 700 °C in inert atmosphere resulting in the formation of Cr2O3 solid residue [45]. Nevertheless, it releases sulfur dioxide between 300 and 500 °C during the decomposition of parchment and leather matrices as Fig. 5h shows. Fig. 2c and d demonstrated that the evolution of HCN and CH3CN were significantly more intense from the chromium-tanned leather than from parchment. The formation of nitriles is enhanced by the increasing chromium concentration from parchment, as Fig. 5c (HCN), 5e (CH3CN) and 5 g (C2H4CN+) illustrates. As discussed above, m/z 27 and 41 contain some hydrocarbon fragments beside the nitriles.
However, m/z 54 ion represents only a major MS fragment ion of propanenitrile, as it was established from the Py-GC/MS results. Fig. 5g shows that parchment releases propanenitrile from 300 °C to 550 °C with a maximal rate at about 350 °C. As the chromium content of the samples increases, this peak reduces and another peak maximum appears at about 460 °C. It means that chromium sulfate has a dual effect: its stabilizing effect shifts the nitrile formation to higher temperature, and as its concentration increases, the concentration of nitriles significantly increases in the pyrolyzate, as well. During the decomposition of chromium sulfate, oxygen is also released beside sulfur dioxide. Nevertheless, oxygen evolution could not be detected by TG/ MS from chromium sulfate treated parchments. Probably the released oxygen atoms cleaved hydrogen atoms from the CH-NH segments of the polypeptide chains leading to the increased evolution of water and nitrile compounds. Fig. 5d presents a hydrocarbon fragment ion curve (C2H5+) confirming the formation of hydrocarbons at higher temperature range with the maximal evolution rate at 450–500 °C from parchment either in the presence or absence of chromium. This implies that the peaks of m/z 27 and 41 ion curves at about 350 °C can be attributed to nitriles. The evolution of aliphatic products can be largely attributed to the scission of the proline rings, but other amino acid residues, like alanine may release hydrocarbons, as well. 3.6. Py-GC/MS of parchment and leathers Py-GC/MS measurements were performed to investigate the main decomposition products of tanned leathers and parchment. Two pyrolysis temperatures were selected (400 and 600 °C) based on the TG/MS

results. The main decomposition step of leather takes place between 200 and 500 °C, and the most intense decomposition of the collagen occurs up to 400 °C, hence 400 °C was chosen as the first pyrolysis temperature. The majority of the char formation processes were finished up to 600 °C; therefore, 600 °C was applied as the second pyrolysis temperature. The pyrograms of parchment, chromium-tanned leather,
and mixed-tanned leather are presented in Fig. 6. The detailed assignation of the pyrolysis products are summarized in the Supplementary materials (Table A2), while the list of the major products can be found in Table 6, as well. It was already reported [6], [9], [16], [17], [25], [27], [29], [30] that the most significant types of molecules forming from collagen-based samples are 2,5-diketopiperazines (DKPs). The decomARSTANNERY 77
RESEARCH
position route of the formation of these cyclic dimers is illustrated in Fig. 3. Although glycine is the most abundant component of collagen, Gly-Gly DKP cannot be identified among the pyrolysis products, because DKPs are formed from two adjacent amino acid residues. However, every third residue is glycine in the primary structure of collagen, which is composed of tandemly repeated triplets Gly-Xaa-Yaa in which the Xaa and Yaa positions are predominantly occupied by proline and hydroxyproline, respectively [28], [46]. These three amino acids account for more than 50% of the total amino acid content of collagen type I [24]. Therefore, glycine and proline form the largest DKP quantities during pyrolysis, while Pro-Hyp DKP isomers are the second most intense products due to their high frequency and neighboring position in the polypeptide molecules. The rest of the amino acid residues also generate various DKPs in the pyrolyzate of collagen. As expected, the intensities of smaller degradation products are higher from each sample at higher (600 °C) than at lower pyrolysis temperature (400 °C). The metal salt tanned samples released significantly more gaseous (e.g., carbon monoxide) and other lower MW compounds than parchment. This behavior proves the thermal stabilization effect of tanning because the smaller molecules can be arisen by fragmentation reactions of the polypeptide chain or by the cleavage of side groups (e.g., toluene). Although each tanning agent influences the thermal decomposition processes of leather, chromium had the highest impact on the product distribution; therefore, the effect of chromium sulfate was studied on the formation of pyrolysis products from parchment.
3.7. Py-GC/MS of chromium-treated parchment samples The chromium-treated parchment samples were studied by Py-GC/ MS to investigate the relationship between the intensities of the thermal degradation products and the metal salt content. Since chromium sulfate had major effect on the formation of nitrogen-containing small compounds during TG/MS experiments, the relative amounts of ammonia (m/z 17), hydrogen cyanide (m/z 27), acetonitrile (m/z 41), and isocyanic acid (m/z 43) were evaluated from the Py-GC/MS measurements, as Fig. 7 presents. It should be noted that these compounds are not separated well from other products on the GC column, hence the selected ion chromatograms of their major MS ions were used for integration. Nevertheless, the corresponding m/z values represented only the above listed compounds during flash pyrolysis due to the GC separation, while these ions could be also formed from other compounds during the TG/MS measurements. As Fig. 7 demonstrates, the amount of hydrogen cyanide and acetonitrile is increased, while the yield of ammonia is decreased as a function of chromium concentration. Nevertheless, the presence of chromium does not affect substantially the formation of isocyanic acid, which is formed from the amide moieties by the scission of polypeptide chain, as shown in Fig. 3. Thus, the thermal behavior observed during TG/MS measurements is proved by the pyrolysis experiments: The chromium sulfate content of leather has an opposite effect on the release of ammonia and nitriles during pyrolysis.

ucts have been used. The number of the variables was reduced with the help of the loading plots. Finally, 28 and 21 compounds (variables) were selected for the factors at 400 °C (Fig. 8a) and at 600 °C (Fig. 8c), respectively. The corresponding compounds are listed in Table 6. Principal components were calculated by the linear combination of these variables. The two factors explain more than 78% of the total variance in the first calculation (400 °C pyrolysis) and more than 83% in the second one (600 °C pyrolysis). The two factors are sufficient to describe the major differences between the samples. In the score plots (Fig. 8a and c), the separation of the samples can be observed based on the first two principal components. Both score plots clearly present the separation of parchment (PAR) and solely chromium-tanned (LCR) samples. However, the calculation based on the volatile products of pyrolysis at 400 °C does not show significant separation between the samples containing vegetable tannins, either the mimosa-tanned leather (LMM) or vegetable-mineral hybrid leathers (LAY, LCM1, LCM2). When the principal component analysis was performed on PyGC/MS data of pyrolysis at 600 °C, a higher separation degree is visible. The four vegetable tannin containing samples are separated into two groups. The chromium- and mimosa mixed tanned leathers (LCM1 and LCM2) are closer to the chromium-tanned leather (LCR) indicating that Factor 1 describes mainly the effect of chromium on the product distribution. The LMM and LAY samples are close to the parchment pointing to the slight influence of vegetable tanning agents on the decomposition of collagen. These observations are in good agreement with the results of Marcilla et al. [47], who studied tannery wastes from various tanning processes by flash pyrolysis and multivariate statistical analysis. They found that the organic tanned leathers formed a cluster, being clearly separated from leathers tanned by inorganic materials. 4. Conclusion The thermal characterization of bovine leathers tanned with vegetable tannins, metal (chrome and aluminum) salts and vegetable-metal salt mixtures was performed using TG/MS, Py-GC/MS and PCA, complemented by ICP-OES measurements, and nitrogen and ash content determination. Calf parchment was used as a reference (not-tanned) material. The ICP-OES revealed information regarding the preparation of the samples. The identified inorganic elements (i.e., chromium, alkali and alkaline earth metals, and sulfur) originate from various fabrication steps like liming, tanning, and finishing. The ash content refers to the inorganic part of the samples, which is affected by the tanning methods. Dumas method was used to determine the nitrogen content, which provided data for calculating the protein content of the samples. A higher protein content corresponds to a lower tannin

PCA based on Py-GC/MS data In order to find correlation between the tanning process and the pyrolysis products distribution, principal component analysis was carried out on the experimental data obtained by Py-GC/MS measurements. In the calculation, the peak areas of the characteristic pyrolysis prod-

content in all investigated leathers. The thermal stabilization effect of the tanning was confirmed by TG/MS measurements using slow and controlled decomposition. The carbonaceous residue and the nitrogen content proved to be good indicators of the tannin content, too. According to the TG/MS data, the yield of hydrogen cyanide and acetonitrile was the highest during the thermal decomposition of chromium-tanned leather. In order to investigate this behavior in detail, parchment samples with increasing chromium content were prepared and analyzed by TG/MS and Py-GC/MS. It was found that the chromium sulfate content of the samples induced a catalytic effect on the hydrogen cyanide, acetonitrile and propionitrile formation, while the evolution of ammonia reduced with increasing chromium content. It was concluded that chromium sulfate promoted the release of water from collagen; hence decreased the hydrolysis of the polypeptide bonds, which caused the reduced evolution of ammonia. It is worth mentioning that the superior thermal stabilization conferred by chromium salts was for the first time explained by the promotion of water release and inhibition of peptide bond cleavage. It is important to note that the applied chrome tanning agent released sulfur dioxide in the 300–500 °C temperature range in spite of the fact that anhy80 ARSTANNERY
drous chromium sulfate decomposes at 700 °C in inert atmosphere. Consequently, the decomposing carbonaceous matrix of leather or parchment promoted the decomposition of chromium sulfate, which evolved oxygen beside sulfur dioxide. The released oxygen dehydrogenated certain CH-NH groups in the polypeptide chain resulting in the increased formation of water, hydrogen cyanide and other nitriles. In addition to the enhanced fragmentation, the char yield was also increased in the presence of chromium sulfate. The pyrolysis product distribution of the samples was analyzed by PyGC/MS technique at 400 and 600 °C. The relative intensity of diketopiperazines, as the typical cyclic dimer products of collagen, was reduced in comparison with the compounds of smaller molecular mass in the presence of metal tanning agents and at higher pyrolysis temperature. Principal component analysis was performed to identify differences in the pyrolysis products distribution. PCA calculations revealed that both vegetable tanning and chromium-tanning specifically modify the composition of the pyrolyzates. The score plots showed that leathers tanned with vegetable tannin or mixed vegetable and inorganic tanning agent separated from the chromium-tanned sample and from the parchment.
