Eremo: Subdued emotions COMING FROM A PREVIOUS DECADE OF EXPERIENCE IN THE WORLD OF LEATHER GOODS, VALENTINA ABBATE (CREATIVE DIRECTOR) AND SIMONA MAGGIO (SALES MANAGER) GIVE LIFE TO A NEW PROJECT OF HIGH FASHION CRAFT, SENSITIVE TO ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Founded in April 2019, the brand offers a striking range of bags, and each bears the name of a hermitage. The models express the need to shelter oneself from existential confusion: the shape, inspired by the snail shell, is designed to preserve the complex daily life of a modern woman. Vegetable tanned leathers as well as croco printed cowhide and eco-friendly cotton lining are aptly used to shape minimal bags with a refined silhouette and a lively spirit. The different models are characterized by a constant: the vertical handle. An essential element that contains the iconicity of the brand and makes it unique among many. The linear contours are therefore harmoniously broken: sculpture, grace and functionality are the perfect setting to accompany the Eremo woman. The lightness of the structure, the shoulder strap and the removable belt make them ideal to face the days with comfort and style and at the same time the perfect accessory to give elegance to evening outfits. The brand, with its two laboratories, in the province of Frosinone and Rome, and its skilled artisans continue the tradition of Made in Italy, carrying out total control of the production chain.

BGBL circular economy leather goods THE MADE IN ITALY BAG BRAND, THAT IS INSPIRED BY THE LOVE FOR BASKETBALL, TRANSFORMS USED BASKETBALLS INTO LUXURY ACCESSORIES Founded in Treviso at the beginning of 2019, BGBL (or Bouncing Bags) collects used basketballs from sports clubs and gives them new life, providing the teams with new balls in exchange. A concept born from the ideas of the founders Doriano Ottavian (co-CEO) and Elisabetta Viola (designer and co-CEO) between passion, craftsmanship, vintage style and modernity, between reuse and recycling. The brand was born of a dual idea of sustainability: primarily environmental, giving second life to materials that would otherwise be destined for landfill. Then social, allowing sports clubs to buy new (and more performing) balls. The BGBL bags are made of prime grain cowhide, worked by leather manufacturers in the Treviso and Padua area, trying to maintain a zero kilometer production circularity. There are three start models, with names taken from the abbreviations of the roles in the game schemes: "B-Five" (like center), a unisex one-shoulder backpack with black or green lining, the most representative of the collection. "B-Three" (like small forward), a roomy, practical and sporty-chic bucket bag. And finally the "B-One" handbag (like point guard). In all cases, the ball leather is cut by hand, the inner lining and the external structure are made up-cycling the fabric used to make the basketball players' uniforms. The result is a collection composed only of unique pieces entirely Made in Italy, which combines ecological sensitivity with a passion for Italian design.
“B-Three” (come l’ala piccola), una borsa secchiello capiente, pratica e sporty-chic.

All bags are numbered and available in small, medium and large sizes, are produced with top quality leathers and travertine marble powder, are made and hand painted by master craftsmen. In detail, the bags reproduce the Spanish Steps, Piazza Duomo and the Rialto Bridge, famous places admired all over the world for their beauty and exclusivity. The painting also, with chiaroscuro effect, is made by hand.

INTERVIEW
Refined hints Raffinate suggestioni BEATRICE SCARDI BARDUCCI IS A MILANESE JOURNALIST WHO HAS ALWAYS BEEN ATTRACTED BY NEW EXPERIENCES. AFTER LIVING IN NEW YORK, MALTA AND BRUSSELS, SHE CURRENTLY WORKS AT THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND IS THE DESIGNER (AND CO-FOUNDER TOGETHER WITH HER MOTHER MARIA GABRIELLA) OF BSB ACCESSORIES When did you decide to try your hand at bag design? In 2014, FieraMilano collaborated with the Lombardy Region to offer Gerosa G.B., my family-owned manufacturer of small metal accessories since 1908, the opportunity to exhibit a finished product at HOMI. Having always worked for major Italian and international fashion brands, the choice of bags came naturally. How would you describe your style and products? I have always been fascinated by the style that the French call BoBo (“bourgeois-bohème”), a mix between a classic and bourgeois soul and a hippy, non-conformist spirit. The creations by BSB Accessories perfectly reflect this style and adapt perfectly to women and girls, giving the first a bit of extravagance and the latter a touch of bon ton. All our collections have a common leitmotif: the animal world. All the accessories and materials have a strong recall to the animal world. What are your favourite materials and accessories? We only use high-quality materials made entirely in Italy. Also for the choice of leather hides we have turned to selected suppliers from the Italian production chain. How are you organised in terms of production and distribution? Artisanal and “made to measure” production. We do not focus on large volumes, which gives us the possibility to offer unique and handmade products. As for the distribution, up to now we have relied on a selected network of boutiques, but we are now working on expanding the distribution to a wider audience, especially through showrooms. Who is your reference model in fashion? I really love Valentino’s ability to remain himself through the various historical and cultural eras. He said that “Elegance is the balance between proportion, emotion and surprise.” A well-defined style is the passe-partout for every item that wants to last in time and never go out of fashion. Our bags were beautiful and fashionable five years ago, they are today and they will be in ten years’ time.

Usiamo solo materiali di alta qualità e 100% Made in Italy. Com’è organizzata a livello produttivo e distributivo?

65 years of Sapaf Atelier 1954 I 65 anni di Sapaf Atelier 1954 THE BRAND-NEW “CELEBRITY” CAPSULE COLLECTION OF LUXURY BAGS FROM THE FLORENTINE COMPANY WAS PRESENTED DURING AN EVENT AT MIPEL - MILAN
The event dedicated to the anniversary of Sapaf Atelier 1954 was held in Milan, during the Mipel leather goods fair. For three generations, the company has been a standard-bearer of the Made in Italy value and Florentine craftsmanship around the world. At the event, the owner Andrea Calistri (who together with his wife and two children leads the company founded in 1954 by his parents) said: “In our company, after 65 years, we still preserve a trace of the origins in each of our creations. The process of rediscovering our brand started a few years ago with ‘Replica 1954.’ It continues to accompany us and always sees the presence of an historical detail in our collections. 'Celebrity' reinterprets, with a new look and new technologies such as digital inkjet printing, a Sapaf model from the early sixties.”

The re-edition of the iconic 'Celebrity' is a line of clutches made in white Saffiano leather, on which is reproduced the Liberty design that has identified the company since its inception. The design, enhanced by the linear shape of the model, is digitally printed on the leather. Four different colour versions are available: one in which blue dominates, the classic version which combines green and orange and the pink and purple version. It is a limited edition and numbered collection, which also has a version in monochrome exotic leather: the exterior recalls the dominant colour of the design which in this case is printed on the nappa that lines the inside of the bag. The handle, specially made by an artisan based on the original model, is made of brass as is the chain that allows the mini-bag to be worn on the shoulder.

“Style Accents” “Accenti di Stile” SUCCESS FOR THE EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO GIORGIO ARMANI’S ACCESSORIES, WHICH WILL END ON FEBRUARY 2ND, 2020
The fascinating exhibition at the Armani/ Silos is dedicated to the accessories of the famous fashion house and presents a retrospective of bags, shoes and bijoux, precious elements suspended between art and design made according to the highest level of craftsmanship, alongside historic advertising and editorial campaigns on international fashion magazines. The path leads through themes that are part of the designer’s historical themes: “Ethnic and Animalier”, “Metropolis and Neoclassical”, “Two-toned and Colour Block”, “Nocturne and Glow”. The exhibition displays slingbacks and decolletés, as well as the iconic flats to match evening dresses, examples of design and art that still show the brand’s sophisticated and balanced aesthetics, while Plissè bags and clutches are among the accessories that perfectly summarise the Armani essence. Giorgio Armani approaches the world of accessories towards the end of the 1970s “creating items that complete and define without ever prevailing”, explains the exhibition’s press release, “style accents that know how to emphasise balance and measure. Just the way his garments are the mirror of a ever-changing society, accessories also talk about contemporaneity, made of comfort and refinement, of craftsmanship and nuances”.

Craftsmanship, sustainability and a timeless style Artigianalità, sostenibilità e uno stile intramontabile WE MET ALOK KUMAR SENGUPTA, ONE OF THE OWNER OF ASG LEATHER, AT THEIR STAND AT MIPEL OF MILAN, WHO TOLD US ABOUT HIS COMPANY AND THE BRAND OF BAGS THEY PRODUCE How did your adventure in the world of leather begin? ASG Leather Pvt. Ltd is based in Kolkata and began operations in 1998. We immediately identified a need for high quality leather goods and accessories in the domestic market, which at that time had very few manufacturers and suppliers capable of rising to the challenge. Hence, our constant search for excellence, hoping one day to be among the leading producers and suppliers of quality leather goods and accessories in India. Today we are proud to be a well-established producer and exporter of quality leather goods, as well as proud members of the Council of Leather Exports of Chennai, which has also supported us in our push abroad. With state-of the art manufacturing facilities of more than 50,000 square feet in the New Leather Complex of Kolkata, our activity is divided into three core areas: we are leather manufacturers, contractors for various international brands and we have our own leather goods brand. What do you think is your strength? For us, it is certainly to be able to rely on a team of experienced professionals in the sector who relentlessly draw on their experience, expertise and resources, with the aim of providing total customer satisfaction, both in terms of quality and in maintaining delivery times and costs. At ASG, our motto is “Nothing less than complete customer satisfaction.” As for your brand Kompanero, since 2000 (the year of its creation) it has gradually become famous for its bags, suitcases and small leather goods. What is the secret of your success? The brand name is inspired by the Spanish word which means “companion” and for us it represents closeness and taking care of each other. We offer models that will accompany you over time and become even more beautiful as time goes by. Our speciality is certainly the vintage aspect of leather, which we combine with contemporary and versatile models, and a slightly folksy style. The deep passion for leather and sustainable natural materials, together with our love for craftsmanship leads us to create
44
collections that are able to captivate the customer and that do not go out of fashion with the changing of the seasons. Today, Kompanero is successful in Europe (Germany, Spain, Italy), Japan, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and especially in Australia, where we have become a cult brand, something we are extremely proud of and which drives us to always give our best. The new Kompanero store will soon open in Neal Street, Covent Garden, London. The sign is made with a plank of recycled carbonised wood, in line with our vision of upcycling. I know that protecting the environment is a fundamental aspect of your operations. How do you go about this in the company? Our constant commitment is to a cleaner environment and a more sustainable future. Specifically, each Kompanero bag is made of real leather and is individually piece-dyed. We only dye the exact amount of leather needed, piece by piece, thus increasing the cutting yield (around30 %), resulting in reduced material and water waste, and less pollutants than traditional dyeing. 90% of the leather is vegetable tanned in our tanneries, where we carry out strict controls on both the quality and on the ethical and welfare practices of the workers.
ABBIAMO INCONTRATO PRESSO IL LORO STAND A MIPEL DI MILANO IL SIGNOR ALOK KUMAR SENGUPTA, UNO DEI TITOLARI DI ASG LEATHER, CHE CI HA RACCONTATO DELLA SUA AZIENDA E DEL BRAND DI BORSE CHE PRODUCONO Com’è iniziata la vostra avventura nel mondo della pelle? ASG Leather Pvt.
Nello specifico, ogni borsa Kompanero è in vera pelle e tinta in capo singolarmente.

The ILM has developed into oone of the most important marketplace for the leather goods, accessories and luggage industry, not only in Germany but also for the international specialist trade. At the 151st fair edition, around 300 exhibitors presented their collections on an area of roughly 13,000 square metres, clearly divided into product segments. The percentage of foreign suppliers again increased, confirming the growing international character of the trade fair. Exhibits ranged from bags and small leather goods, through luggage, business and school items to umbrellas, belts and fashion accessories. The focus was on the collections for Spring/Summer 2020. All the wellknown labels were represented in Offenbach, but also a lot of young, exciting new names. In the brand-new Concept Square, geared towards modern communication and innovation, visitors were thrilled at the exciting products and creative ideas of these "newcomers”. Valuable inspiration was also provided by the series of lectures on fashion and point of sale strategies, which this year had been extended further, as well as the newly staged ILM Fashion

Shows. The modern "Runway" concept by Bettina von Bassewitz, with very high-quality choreographed shows, was very well received by exhibitors and buyers. The shows were divided into different topics - "Bag World” and "Travel World” - giving buyers precise and focused information. The range for the Spring/Summer 2020 season is very diverse: monochrome looks are contrasted with decorative styles. Neutral, classic colours underline the trend towards cleaner, smarter fashion. Bright hues including neon set the accents. Functional backpacks and belt bags are in great demand in the sports sector - especially made of high-tech materials. In addition, the topic of sustainability is becoming more and more important. In the bag segment, too, a lot of manufacturers are focusing on recycling and vegan processing, as well as vegetable leather. The ILM celebrated its 70th birthday with a glamorous event and the presentation of the ILM Awards at the Capitol Offenbach: the winner in the category "Best in Basics" was Braun Büffel, in the category "Best in Fashion" the prize went to Bree and the award in the category "Best Newcomer" was given to the young company MDLR. The industry is already looking forward to the next edition: the ILM Winter Styles 2020 will be held in Offenbach from February 29th to 2 March 2nd 2020 and will present the latest collections of bags, accessories and luggage sectors for Autumn/Winter 2020/21.

IN BRIEF
The architecture of a Von Rauten bag
Mariucci laboratory, the charm of materials
Melissa focuses on sustainable development
The new German brand of bags and accessories stands outs for its impressive and incomparable design. The trademark of the collection created by interior designer Imme Vogel is the hand-embossed surface with 3D diamond structure. The leather is not printed industrially, but created and sewn by hand, bag by bag, in order to achieve a high standard of quality in each piece. The use of a cutting-edge embossing method makes the leather surface seamless, as well as soft and flexible. Only a certain number of bags can be produced each month and availability is strictly limited. In addition to the classic Black Edition, the team together with Imme Vogel, also designs special editions and specific individual productions such as bags fitted with real gold zippers or exotic leather on request.
The Laboratory was founded in 2012 with the dream of supporting the leather craft professions. Its strength lies in the three shops/workshops in Milan where the laboratory is connected directly to the sales space, and customers are able to touch the quality of the bags and accessories, observe the activity of the leather goods makers and wander inside a space surrounded by the perfume of real Italian leather reigns. There are many different models and colours, but they all have the winning elements of simplicity, handcrafted workmanship and constant attention to sustainability as the bags are made to avoid waste or even recycle it into another model.
The Melissa brand celebrates its 40th anniversary with events and limited-edition models, and continues its journey towards sustainability and to support initiatives aimed at making consumers aware of the correct disposal of disused models through recycling processes. The Melissa plastic is 100% recyclable, vegan, made of renewable materials, and can be reused several times. All the Melissa products are registered by The Vegan Society and are all accompanied by eco-friendly packaging. Sustainability is an important and long-term commitment for Melissa, carefully planned to reduce any negative environmental or social impacts.

HOME OF THE OSTRICH Ostrich breeding in South Africa is one of the top twenty agricultural industries in the country by value, ranking even higher as far as exports are concerned. The total turnover of the activities related to the ostrich (production and processing, excluding production and commercial activities with added value and tourism) exceeds 2.1 billion rand (about 148 million dollars), while proceeds from exports amount to 1.2 billion rand (about 85 million dollars) per year with 90% of exported leather and meat. Thanks to the renowned tradition and the excellent natural conditions offered by the country, the South African ostrich industry should be able to maintain its position of world leadership in the coming years.

Ostrich meat, today extremely popular in Europe thanks to its health-giving characteristics (low cholesterol content, lower fat content than any meat, etc.), is produced according to the strictest standards. Furthermore, ostrich leather is one of the most beautiful, elastic and resistant of all exotic skins. Features that add up to its unique aesthetic qualities making it one of the most appreciated materials in the current fashion scene.

For each designer the knowledge of materials is of particular importance within the creative process. Knowing how to treat, enhance and make the most of a material is the basis for creating beautiful, functional and prestigious products. SAOBC knows this well and has therefore been working with ARSUTORIA school for 10 years to promote the qualities and characteristics of ostrich leather at the famous Milanese school of young fashion accessories designers and model makers. For students, it is an excellent training opportunity to have at their disposal valuable ostrich skins to study and learn about and with a view to developing a small collection of shoes and bags. In fact, in the factory inside the school, they were able to learn how to treat ostrich leather from excellent South African companies, such as Scot and Klein Karoo, and to discover their main features, as well as learning how to use them correctly for a prototype or for any other industrial production.

For those who want to become part of the fashion world, parading on the catwalk is the fulfilment of a dream, as is the first personal exhibition for an artist or to score the decisive goal in the finals for a footballer. For the Arsutoria School students, who attend the one-year shoe course or the six-month scholarship course, the dream can become reality. As has been happening for some time now thanks to the participation of the school in Fashion Graduate Italia, the event promoted by the Fashion Training System Platform which, every year, brings together Italian Fashion Schools and Academies to present fashion shows, meetings, workshops and exhibitions telling about the present and imagining the future of young fashion designers... How can this opportunity be accessed? By adhering to the one-year programme for shoes and to the six- months programme for bags ideated by Arsutoria School that provides a deep knowledge of the skills required today by the footwear and leather goods sector. A practical approach that allows students to learn every production aspect - from design to the creation of models, passing through a wide range of technical constructions both for women

and men, from casual to elegant styles - and which provides the opportunity to deepen the knowledge of materials and to understand the purchase logic. The end point is the development of a collection. After designing and creating a merchandising plan, students work closely with Italian technicians and artisans in the school’s laboratory, and make their own pairs of shoes or their own bag models. Thanks to such a wide and articulated training, and to the support of expert product developers like Donato Denti (also a former Arsutoria student), students are able to organise a real collection, ready to be shown on the catwalk, developing not only prototypes and models set by the programme, but drawing and realising their own stylistic ideas. As happened, for example, to Ernesto Maldonado who had the opportunity to design his own custom graphic for his boot/sandal and see it shown on the elastic tapes specially made by the company Nastrotex.
