The Vision is Taking Shape This past week
we had the opportunity to visit Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club. This property nestled in a private setting, Golden Ocala, provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s a relaxing atmosphere where you can recharge and unwind. Behind the gates, members, residents (and lucky guests, Tee Hee) enjoy a fabulous lifestyle that encompasses wellness, fun, fine dining, relaxation, equestrian facilities, and a variety of sports all in one extraordinary place. We were greeted by an enthusiastic group of professionals, from the guard gate, Sales Center, Pro Shop, and the bar at Griffin’s (shout out to Linda). We enjoyed breathtaking surroundings and a warm welcoming experience. Much obliged! We were in the Ocala area to be present at the ribbon cutting and watch the vision taking shape at IronCrest. I had the opportunity to hobnob with the owners Craig and Elizabeth Phillips and they couldn’t have been more genuinely wholesome and unpretentious. Liz was super cool, she had just returned from Europe the night before, shopping for a Jumper to add to her stables and couldn’t wait to show me his pictures, he’s a very handsome boy! IronCrest is a gated master-planned private golf club and equestrian community. The Club at IronLake is the private 18-hole championship course winding thru limestone quarry lakes, mature oaks and elevation changes not typically known in Florida golf. One of our favorite real estate media partners, ICI Homes, a highly prominent privately held and family-owned developer, was there with their stunning staff in full force! These ladies are fun and professional with a little bit of sass and are fantastic to work with. Jumping subjects, something I never do! There isn’t an exact total count available for all golf charity events that commemorated Sept. 11, but there were 100’s if not thousands. The golf industry is always on the forefront of honoring the men and women who served our country and first responders. We here at GCM are very proud to be part of supporting and highlighting these industry efforts. “Monarchs in the Rough” (page 54) is an environmental initiative by Audubon International a program to promote habitat rebuild via Milkweed planting on golf courses. We also believe it’s a tribute to Dolly. RIP!

Cherish the Lifestyle Established more than 35 years ago on a 300-acre orange grove, Boca Grove has transformed into one of Boca Raton’s premier private club communities. Built around a championship golf course originally designed by Karl Litten and later redesigned by Jim Fazio in 2011, Boca Grove blends timeless tradition with an exceptional lifestyle. The course gained national recognition as host of the Quadel Senior Classic, where golf legends Arnold Palmer claimed victories in 1983 and 1984, followed by Gary Player in 1985. Chef Adriana Cavaliere | Executive Chef Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club
spent nearly a decade expanding both her culinary expertise and leadership experience. During that time, she worked with several country clubs, hospitality operations and restaurant concepts, as well as Walt Disney World. These diverse environments broadened her experience in private club dining, high-volume culinary operations, banquets and special events, menu development, food-cost
and inventory management, team development and the overall member and guest experience. When the opportunity arose to return to Plantation Bay, Chef Adriana brought with her a decade of new experiences, ideas and leadership skills. Today, she serves as Executive Chef, leading the culinary operation at the same club where she once began as a line cook. Her approach to leadership centers on consistency, accountability, creativity and developing a strong team. Just as important is creating memorable experiences through food and hospitality. As she continues to grow as both a chef and a leader, Chef Adriana is equally committed to mentoring her team and developing the next generation of culinary leaders. For Chef Adriana, returning to Plantation Bay is more than another step in her career. It is the culmination of a journey that began in its kitchens and ultimately brought her back to lead them.

Chef Adriana Cavaliere’s culinary career is a story of growth, experience and coming full circle. A graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Pennsylvania, Chef Adriana began her career in independently owned restaurants, where she learned the industry from the ground up and developed a strong foundation through hands-on experience in the kitchen. After moving to Florida in 2009, she joined Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club as a line cook. Within approximately six months, she was promoted to Sous Chef, beginning what would become a little more than six years with Plantation Bay. Chef Adriana later relocated to the Orlando area, where she 12

What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course? I’ve seen the slips and falls, but the best thing I ever heard from a golfer was when a guy told me he was going to buy us the nicest apartment to live in. I quickly said, “Oh can it at least be 535 square feet?” The next time I pulled up to this guy I said, “Hey, I called my boys, they are so excited about the new apartment.” All his buddies lost it and said that was a good one. What hobbies do you enjoy? I love to work out, play golf and take walks with my boys and our little dog, Ruthie. Favorite comedian? Ellen; she just has that sarcastic but nice style that I think is funny. Favorite type of movie? Dry comedy. Napoleon Dynamite, Savannah Smiles or the original Dirty Dancing.
Amanda Dixon
Where did you grow up? Paoli, Indiana (smalltown USA). Everyone knows everyone. Which group of people did you associate most with in high school? Probably the rebellious crowd, but I got along with everyone. I would always try to take up for people who were being bullied as well. Definitely not a bookworm.
Favorite charity to support? If I could give bunches of money to any charity, I’d help families with a child or loved one get diagnosed or find resources to help with autism, and get extra help for parents who need to work. My son Jack is a high-functioning autistic, brilliant child. He is 14. He was diagnosed in 4th grade, but it took about four years to get that diagnosis and he went through a lot of struggles with school. All this was going on while I was trying to work, and it was hard as a single mother in those times. I’m definitely thankful for some of his teachers and how they helped, but I think the system could be better with more resources and funding. Also, I would love to be able to donate to diabetes, especially juvenile diabetes. My niece, Eden, was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes about 8 years ago. She’s the sweetest, most pure girl and is now a senior in high school. I would love for a cure to be found for her and all the sweet children who suffer. What else would you like for us to know about you? I am a 45-yearold mother of three boys, Marcus (22), Jack (14) and Ollie (9) who all have different special qualities. The reason I work and work so hard is not only to make sure guests are happy, but this is how I take care of my boys and their future. I enjoy this job and all the opportunities my sons and I have been given because of it. I enjoy family time and also like to dance and hang out with my friends, mainly on the golf course. I enjoy working out at the gym with my sister. My family and friends mean the most to me. Everything I do is for my boys. I love them more than anything. The resort and golf brought a lot of great things to my family, and I’m forever thankful for that.
Do you enjoy playing golf? I started playing golf with my oldest son, Marcus, about a year ago. The first 18 holes I played were at The Pete Dye Course. Marcus (who caddies at Pete Dye) told me to keep track of every stroke just to have something funny to tell the golfers. I like to joke that I hold the course record with a 193. I’ll tell that to golfers and make them feel better about their game! What do you feel makes this club special? The amazing view. Sunrise, sunset, storms, all the different beautiful days. The views don’t get old, I promise. Another thing about Pete Dye is the amazing teamwork from everyone in the golf departments: grounds crew, maintenance, golf attendants, caddies and their master, as well as our head and assistant pros. We know that through all the hiccups, the most important thing is our golfers. Last but not least would be our chefs, cooks, bartenders, servers and the beverage cart girls. Also, the managers and directors who keep us all in line at times, and our golf sales team who sell the packages and talk with the golfers before and after their stay to ensure everything goes smoothly. 14

60th Birthday in Vietnam What prompted two Colorado transplants who live in Winter Haven, Central Florida to travel to Vietnam you may ask, and yes, we do get asked this often! In July of 2026 Angie, 60 and Regan, 62 traveled to Vietnam for golf, adventuring and the amazing cuisine. They had heard that it was an awe-inspiring country to visit and very affordable Angie wanted to do something special for her 60th birthday so this was it! They began their trip flying into Da Nang, Central Vietnam, from there they took a ride share to the Angsana Resort which is adjacent to the Laguna Lang Co Golf Club. This is a par-71 16
course designed by Sir Nick Faldo and is nestled on a pristine beach near the Lang Co Bay. The Laguna course plays through three distinct zones, the first is through rice paddies and flat, the second section runs along the sea with holes overlooking the ocean

The 5-star facility features a wide variety of amenities such as a pro shop, driving range, practice area, and a sports bar; as well as fine dining. A fun fact about golf in Vietnam, the caddies are all women! After multiple rounds of golf and
resort with day trips to Hue, the Imperial City and Hoi An, the city of lanterns, the two traveled North to Hanoi where they spent a night before heading out on a 4-night tour of the Northern areas. Pu Luong Nature Reserve famous Hang Doi (Bat Cave) and had an exciting dirtbike ride back up the very steep incline to the lodge with the local village women. They moved on to Ninh Binh, spending 2 nights at Ana’s Eco-Garden complete with Vietnam war area relic vehicles turned into lodging rooms. They explored temples, a mountain top shrine, took bamboo boat cave tours and experienced the abundant restaurants and food stalls in Hoa Lu Old Town along the Ky Lan Lake. The last night of their tour involved an overnight cruise on Halong and Lan Ha Bays on a Rita cruise. The views were stunning from every location and the familyowned oyster farm we passed was a bonus. We had those exact oysters for dinner that night and they were scrumptious! Most surprising thing learned, they serve French fries at every meal, best take-away, the genuine and friendly Vietnamese people! Overall, they both felt it was an incredible trip and the memories they made will last a lifetime! Golf Central • Volume 27, Issue 6

A Georgia Gem By Mike May
Creek at Hard Labor from behind 5th tee
If you build it, they will come.
That’s been the marketing philosophy of longtime PGA professional/head pro Karl Gross who has been in charge at The Creek Golf Course (706-557-3006) at the Hard Labor Park State Park in Social Circle, Georgia for the last 15 years. Admittedly, the Creek GC has been in existence since 1968, but daily player interest in this golf course has truly blossomed under Gross’ leadership. The Creek is actually one of nine public-access golf courses at nine different state parks around Georgia. All nine golf courses are part of The Georgia Golf Trail. Because of Gross’s leadership and experience in the golf business, it’s no surprise that the Creek generates the most rounds played each year out of all Georgia Golf Trail venues. “We have more than 30,000 rounds a year here at The Creek,” said Gross. “We provide a great customer experience and it’s a rewarding test of golf.” Gross feels that his course generates so much daily interest because it’s fun, a little hilly, provides great shot-making opportunities, and is not very long. It also helps that Gross and his agronomy team, led by superintendent Josh Pettit, are always looking to upgrade the golf course. To add to the player experience, 22
The Creek now has new tee boxes and new carts with GPS systems. Two years ago, new TifEagle greens were installed. After two years, the greens are in terrific shape and are performing very well. “The visiting golfers enjoy the quality and consistency of our greens,” added Gross. “Josh Pettit has done a marvelous job keeping the golf course looking great.” It’s no surprise that Pettit was recognized by the Georgia Department of Karl Gross, Head Pro at The Creek GC in Social Circle, Georgia.
Natural Resources as Georgia’s Superintendent of the Year in 2024. Clearly, Pettit is a key member of Gross’ team at The Creek. Soon after striking your first tee shot and making your way down the first fairway at The Creek, you’ll quickly see the appeal of this golf course and you’ll agree that it’s a spectacular setting for your pursuit of ‘Old Man Par.’ Simply put, the atmosphere at The Creek GC can best be described as tranquil, scenic and serene. The fairways, which are lined with loblolly pines, will remind golfers of what they see on television when they watch The Masters at the nearby Augusta National Golf Club, which is a 90-minute drive to the east. Playing the signature hole at The Creek will be one of the highlights of your round at The Creek. “We offer one of the most picturesque backdrops in the region. It’s our signature hole – the par-3 5th hole – which features a wooden wheel, mounted in the original 1880s foundation, that turns gently in front of the waterfall rushing under a wooden pedestrian bridge,” said Gross. When you play The Creek, you’ll be impressed by all 18 holes, especially the par-3 14th hole. “One of my favorite holes is the 14th which is both beautiful and playable,” adds Gross. Another interesting aspect of Golf Central • Volume 27, Issue 6
The Creek GC is that walkers are permitted and encouraged. The Creek GC at Hard Labor Creek State Park also offers stay-and-play packages where you can enjoy the park’s newly-renovated cabins. In addition to catering to the needs of today’s golfers, Gross is already investing in golf’s future, as The Creek is the home of boys and girls golf teams from two area high schools, two local middle schools, and a few private schools. “During the spring, after school, we have at least 50 or 60 school-age golfers practicing every day,” Gross added. While the Augusta National Golf Club may be Georgia’s most well-known golf course, The Creek deserves to be called one of Georgia’s most popular golf courses. “Without a doubt, The Creek is one of the Georgia Golf Trail’s first-class golf destinations,” said Doug Hollandsworth, Founder, The Georgia Golf Trail. “Many golfers make plans for a repeat round after playing the course for the first time.” For complete details on The Georgia Golf Trail, access www.GeorgiaGolfandTravel.com. Ch r is Da h l a n Where were you born? Did you grow up there? I was born and raised in Miami, Florida, specifically South Miami. Miami shaped a lot of who I am, from my lifestyle and being outdoors to the way I connect with people. Is acting your age overrated? I think the expectations we attach to age can be overrated. People mature at different speeds. You can be wise in one part of life and still growing in another. At the same time, age is not meaningless. It reflects experience and where someone may be in life. I try to respect that without letting a number dictate when I am allowed to pursue something, have fun, or take a chance. Aside from golf, what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? Anything that brings good people together. I love hosting friends for basketball, poker, or a game. I also love driving, whether that is my car or my racing simulator. A great day reminds me of golf: good friends, great weather, and rewarding moments where everything finally connects. What golf apparel do you like to wear? I am on a serious Malbon kick right now. My ideal golf look is pants, a belt, and a tucked-in polo, but the Miami heat has other plans. On the hottest days, I keep it practical with athletic shorts and a good polo. Malbon, if you are reading this, I am ready. Whom do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty? My mother, without question. People saw a little of her personality on Netflix, but her heart is even bigger than what made it on screen. She is selfless, welcoming, and the reason hospitality comes so naturally to me. Everything good people see in me started with her.
Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know. I had to ask the group chat for this one. Their answer was that I have always been extremely particular about cleanliness and personal space. They still cannot believe the same guy who once would not let strangers touch him ended up doing kissing challenges on reality television. Life comes at you fast. What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? Disrespect, whether it is toward the course or the people on it. Many people would say slow play is the most annoying. While slowness can test your patience, it’s important to remember every golfer started somewhere. I would rather see the game expand than make beginners feel unwelcome. What bothers me is damaging a green out of anger or hitting while people are still within range. Golf should be an escape. Protect the course, respect the group ahead of you, and let everyone enjoy their round. Name the three most important things to you in this world. My faith, my family, and my legacy. What do you fear the most? The things I cannot control, especially losing someone I love or facing a serious health issue. I have always been an overthinker, and fear can turn every question into a negative hypothetical. I try to stay rooted in faith, keep the right people around me, and focus on what I can do today instead of treating every worst-case scenario like it has already happened. What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Grant Horvat. Jordan brings the competitive fire, Tiger is the greatest to ever do it, and Grant helped define the modern era of YouTube golf. I would learn a lot, talk a little trash, and probably remember every shot for the rest of my life. What are some of your great accomplishments? One of my proudest accomplishments grew out of a setback. I tore my shoulder before my senior year of high school and played the entire basketball season in a brace before having surgery. Rehabilitation pushed me deeply into fitness and taught me how much the body and mind can change through discipline. I eventually used that experience to speak to thousands of students across the country, sometimes only a few years removed from sitting in the same kinds of classrooms. Being able to connect with them and make an impact before I was even 21 meant more to me than any title could. Relaxed evening at home, or nightclub and cocktails? A relaxed evening at home, easily. Give me good food, a game on, and people I love spending time with. Favorite comedian? Brandon Rogers. His commitment to a character is on another level, and he is completely fearless with a joke. Last book you read? The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday. I had read it before and recently returned to it. Its message about turning setbacks into forward momentum always lands differently depending on what season of life you are in. Favorite charity to support? Local animal shelters, especially organizations helping abandoned animals find safe homes in Miami. What else would you like for us to know about you? I never expected golf to improve my quality of life as much as it has. In high school, I dismissed it because I was drawn to faster-paced sports. Now I see golf as a way of looking at life. You cannot change the last shot, so you have to reset, stay present, and focus on the next one. The people around you matter, and one lapse in focus can change everything. It also forces me to step outside, get some sun, breathe, and slow down. Finding golf was really my reminder to take a breath in life. I hope I can help more people discover that same feeling.

Fall Brings Prime Golf Season to North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands Sea Trail
While summer’s end signals the
close of golf season for many players, it marks the start of peak season in North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands, one of the Southeast’s most underrated fall golf destinations. With daytime temperatures typically ranging from the upper 60s into the mid 70s in October,
lower humidity and more than 20 layouts in the area, autumn is the ideal time to enjoy the Brunswick Islands along North Carolina’s southeast coast. The area’s collection of acclaimed courses includes Rivers Edge, an Arnold Palmer design that provides a stunning finish along the Shallotte River. Thistle Golf Club combines Scottish-inspired

architecture with immaculate conditioning and first-class service. Oyster Bay Golf Links remains one of Dan Maples’ signature designs, winding along tidal marshes and through live oak trees, while Sea Trail Golf Resort’s trio of courses the Byrd, Jones and Maples layouts - and onsite accommodations provide visitors with the convenience of a full-service resort.
Oyster Rock Golf Central • Volume 27, Issue 6
Additional favorites include four courses at Ocean Ridge Plantation - Leopard’s Chase, Tiger’s Eye, Panther’s Run, Lion’s Paw - The Pearl Golf Links, Lockwood Folly Country Club, Meadowlands Golf Club, Sandpiper Bay Golf Club and Crow Creek Golf Club, among many others, creating endless possibilities for group leaders. “Fall showcases everything that makes golf in the Brunswick Islands special,” said John Sneed, executive director of Brunswick County Tourism Development Authority. “The weather is idyllic, and the courses are in outstanding condition, allowing golfers to enjoy a great trip in a setting that is as relaxing as it is beautiful.” The destination’s appeal extends well beyond the course. Visitors can spend afternoons exploring the waterfront communities of Southport, Calabash and Shallotte, enjoy fresh local seafood, stroll uncrowded beaches, or relax with sunset views along 45 miles of coastline after finishing their rounds.
Just as appealing is the destination’s value. Numerous golf resorts and package providers offer stay-and-play experiences that combine golf with villas, condominiums and resort accommodations, making it easy for groups to build multi-day trips. Sea Trail Golf Resort, for
example, allows guests to stay, play and dine entirely on property, while Brunswick Plantation offers onsite accommodations and customizable packages as well. With ideal playing conditions, a variety of courses and the relaxed pace of a coastal destination, North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands continues to establish itself as one of the Southeast’s premier fall golf escapes.

Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course in Dahlonega, Georgia purchased by Legacy Golf Properties Texas-based Legacy Golf Properties
has acquired the highly regarded Nicklaus Course at Achasta in the north Georgia mountains, marking the growing ownership group’s second purchase in a nine-month period and its first foray outside the Lone Star State. Legacy Golf Properties took ownership of the facility and its splendid 18-hole, Jack Nicklaus Signature championship golf course on July 20 after a period of due diligence and productive negotiation. “We can’t be more thrilled to have added Achasta to our portfolio,” said Steven Held, president of Legacy Golf Properties. “The setting and beauty of the course is unparalleled, and is only enhanced by the passion the members have for their community.” Located about an hour north of Atlanta in a valley near the charming town of Dahlonega, Georgia, the course features Bermuda fairways, Bentgrass greens, and water hazards on over half of the holes. It rests in the southern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and winds around and into the Chestatee River, presenting challenge and reward, natural wonder and human ingenuity. “The reception we have received from the membership couldn’t have been more welcoming, and our team is extremely excited to bring our focus on the ‘Member Experience’ to this hidden gem,” Held shared. “The opportunity to upgrade the clubhouse, and to provide our members and guests with the food and beverage 36
selections, quality, service, and course conditions that properly support a club of this stature is our immediate focus.” Achasta’s course crosses the quaint, but famous, Chestatee seven times, including on the famous fifth hole, a par-3 on which the green rests entirely on an island in the river. Nicklaus and his team designed the course to optimize the natural environment with unique playing strategies and provide a feel and golf experience that harkens to classic courses. “We understand the tradition of great golf that Achasta has enjoyed over the past 26 years,” said Justin Jafarian, Legacy Golf Properties’ chief operating officer. “Our goal is to make sure that legacy is enhanced as we position the club as the focal point and centerpiece of its uniquely special surrounding community.” Achasta plays to a par of 72 and is carded at 6,955 yards from its back set of tees. The Nicklaus Signature course has hosted qualifiers for the PGA Tour’s AT&T Classic and Bell South Classic as well as for the U.S. Open and has been ranked among the Top 25 Public Courses in the state by GolfPass and as one of the “TopRated Courses You Can Play” by
Golfweek magazine. The club also offers an expansive practice facility with a driving range and practice putting green. Off the course, Achasta features a 10,500-square foot clubhouse and its terrific full-service restaurant, The Achasta Grille, that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Currently semi-private, the club also has event space that can facilitate weddings and events of up to 250 guests. The facility’s amenities are punctuated by a pair of tennis courts, six pickleball courts, and a resort-style pool. “We know people have choices for their time and their discretionary spending, and we take it very seriously that they choose our properties to build memories among family and friends,” Held said. “Beyond the greens, we are passionate about positioning our clubs as the true social epicenter of their communities. We take great pride in creating and nurturing vibrant hubs where members and residents can gather, celebrate, and share in life’s moments.”

Redevelopment… Redefined By Chris Lewis
Green Lake Golf offers numerous redevelopment opportunities. For decades, the golf industry has treated golf courses as fixed assets. More often than not, they were only intended to provide golfers with a quality experience. However, this traditional model is beginning to change. After all, water costs are rising. Land values are increasing. Operating economics have become more challenging. And communities are facing evergrowing housing demands. But, there is a silver lining. A very bright silver lining, in fact. Enter Green Lake Golf. An Arizona-based company, Green Lake Golf (GLG) advises golf course owners on asset optimization, course renovations, and strategic redevelopment, while preserving each property’s quality, character, and identity. “GLG is bringing a new approach to golf course redevelopment,” said Co-founder and Principal Jeff Schwinkendorf. “We don’t simply view golf courses as operating assets. Instead, they’re valuable pieces of real estate.” And, according to Schwinkendorf, they can serve multiple purposes, while also preserving golf’s character and integrity. Such a philosophy— along with GLG’s entrance into the industry—is occurring at a fascinating time. Across the United States, particularly throughout the arid West, golf course owners are confronting similar challenges. For instance, their water costs are escalating, while their infrastructure is aging, too. Not to mention, they need to ensure underperforming properties 38
are economically sustainable, somehow, someway. Yet, despite these challenges, many of these properties are simultaneously occupying their communities’ most valuable, strategically located land. Therefore, a real opportunity exists: an opportunity to completely rethink the equation. Thoughtful, Fact-based Assessments Rather than asking whether a golf course should remain exactly as it is or disappear entirely, GLG asks different questions: Can a golf course be thoughtfully reconfigured to become more financially sustainable? Can it continue to offer a compelling golf experience—and unlock significant new value for its ownership? “That is the premise behind
GLG’s redevelopment strategy,” Cofounder and Principal Jamie Cook emphasized. “GLG is beginning to put that philosophy into practice.” Currently, GLG is exploring property evaluations on multiple sites, primarily throughout the desert Southwest. Due to its discussions with several property owners, GLG continues to look closely at many real estate, golf, and economic possibilities that might exist cohesively on a property. In turn, GLG is determining various meaningful redevelopment opportunities, while considering which potential paths should be navigated in the imminent future. While doing so, it’s not just identifying land for redevelopment either. “GLG examines existing golf Golf Central • Volume 27, Issue 6

course routing, supplementary acreage for potential repurposing, and irrigation infrastructure,” Cook explained. “It assesses water use, property characteristics, surrounding land uses, and economics—of the existing operation and any possible future configurations—as well.” The bottom line? GLG is focused on providing ownership with a thoughtful, fact-based assessment of every possibility. It’s not simply about removing golf holes or selling land. Rather, GLG is committed to preserving the quality, character, and identity of every golf course it advises. “Reconfiguration must produce a cohesive routing and preserve the elements that make a property special,” Schwinkendorf said. “When
possible, it can also create an even better overall experience for golfers.” This philosophy extends to sustainability, too. GLG is committed to helping properties reduce their water consumption, maintenance requirements, and long-term operating expenses. Such savings are crucial in areas with low water availability, ensuring a property can have a viable future.
Golf Central • Volume 27, Issue 6
A New Chapter GLG continues to offer a wide range of expertise—in course renovation, land redevelopment, real estate, and sustainability— to help owners evaluate each of their possibilities. From preliminary assessments, to planning, to entitlements, to redevelopments, to renovations,
GLG provides owners an array of options. Such variety is certainly critical in this day and age. Nonetheless, the implications of GLG’s services are even more significant than the variety it offers. “Golf course redevelopment may ultimately become less about the choice between golf or development,” Cook noted. “It may be more about finding ways to intelligently integrate the two.” Perhaps owners are facing difficult economic realities. Communities are seeking housing and water conservation. Or golfers simply want great courses to remain viable for decades to come. Regardless, an entirely new chapter has just begun in the golf industry. “And Green Lake Golf intends to help write it well into the future,” Schwinkendorf concluded.

Helping Golfers Remember What Works Every golfer has experienced it:
a swing thought suddenly clicks on the range, a putting adjustment changes the round, or a lesson produces that elusive “aha” moment. A few days later, the details are gone. For Heather Schwarz, that frustration wasn’t just relatable — it was personal. She kept walking off the course, or out of a lesson, having learned something that actually worked, only to lose the specifics by her next round. So, she created SwingScribe: a womanowned golf journal company built out of her own need for a simple way to hold onto what she was learning about her game. The compact golf journal gives players a dedicated place to record the information unique to their own game — from swing thoughts and club distances to putting cues, different lies, course strategy and lessons learned. Rather than relying on memory from one practice session or round to the next, golfers can build a personal reference guide

Justin Hicks is Crowned Champion at the 2026 Senior Section Championship Justin Hicks fires off a 13-under
performance in two days to win the South Florida PGA Senior PGA Professional Championship, held August 18-19, 2026 at The Loxahatchee Club. Out of the gate in round one, Justin Hicks, PGA Teaching Professional at Stonebridge Country Club, started steady by making only pars on the first five holes and finishing the nine at 2-under. Making the turn, Hicks turned it up a notch, making four birdies and an eagle, finishing the round at 8-under. At the conclusion of the first round,
44
Hicks led by six shots over John Nieporte, PGA Director of Golf at Trump National Golf Club (Jupiter), and Daniel Escalera, PGA Teaching Professional at La Gorce Country Club. 2012 Champion, John Lee, PGA General Manager at Imperial Golf Club, trailed the leader by eight shots at even-par in fourth place. “I’ve tried a few championship qualifiers this year, and they slapped me around pretty good out there. So, I’m trying to kind of treat each round almost like, a qualifier” Hicks explained. Hicks carried that mindset into round two putting together a
strong and steady performance, recording five birdies while consistently making par throughout his round finishing the day at 5-under. “Oh, this is kind of fun. Maybe I’ll run this up and see how much, how many under I can get it,” Hicks said. Over 36 holes Hicks finished the championship with a bogeyfree 13-under performance. Runner Up Daniel Escalera, PGA Teaching Professional at La Gorce Country Club trailed Hicks finishing the tournament 2-under with 8 total birdies. Escalera had a steady second round, shooting even par and securing a spot in the National Senior PGA Professional Championship set to take place this October 22-25 at Superstition Mountain in Golden Canyon, Arizona. Joining Hicks and Escalera at the National Senior PGA Professional Championship in third place is John Nieporte, PGA Director of Golf at Trump International Golf Club (-1), tied for fourth is Tim Cantwell, PGA Teaching Instructor at PGA National Golf Club (E) and Roger Kennedy Jr, PGA Assistant Professional at The Club at Quail Ridge (E), and in fifth place is Michael Kostelnik, PGA Head Golf Professional at Lost Tree Club (+1). “I do think we have one of the strongest sections, if not the strongest section in the U.S. ” Hicks said.

Threlkeld Thrills with Unbelievable Finish to Win 75th Georgia Open By: Sloan Aubrey
Hughes Threlkeld secured victory in remarkable fashion at the 75th Golf Pro Payments Georgia Open presented by Smok’n Pig B-B-Q and Visit Valdosta at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta on Sunday. The mini-tour professional from St. Simons Island, who holed out from the greenside bunker on the second playoff hole to outlast fellow mini-tour professional Beck Burnette from Blairsville in an astounding finish. Three strokes back to begin the final round, Threlkeld caught fire early with four birdies on a bogeyfree front nine, pulling even with Burnette at the turn and sparking a two-man race the rest of the way. However, bogeys on holes 10, 13, and 14 again set Threlkeld three strokes behind Burnette, but the champion credited his composure for getting back into contention on the last few holes. “I thought I was out of it on the back nine midway, but I did a good job of resetting and hanging in there,” he said. “I just knew I had to hang in there as long as I can, and crazy stuff can happen.” Burnette entered the 18th hole with a one-shot lead, but a clutch par putt from Threlkeld after a Burnette bogey brought both 46

players to 15-under-par 273 and set up a playoff on the 18th hole. After Burnette tapped in for par on the first playoff hole, Threlkeld drilled yet another must-make 14foot putt to force a second playoff on hole 18. There, he delivered the shot of the tournament and claimed the title with the 55foot hole out from the bunker. “It was really a hit and hope. My only hope of keeping it on the green was to hit the hole, and luckily it came out pretty good,” he said. “Crazy.” Atlanta native and current Georgia Southern University golf team member Pierce Adamson
finished third overall and claimed the low amateur honors at 11-under 277 for the championship. Adamson jumped five spots on the leaderboard Sunday with a 6-under 66, the best round of the day. To add to the improbability of his victory, Threlkeld earned a spot in the field as an alternate just last week. Threlkeld’s victory marked the conclusion of the 75th playing of the Georgia Open since its inception in 1952. The tournament continues its tradition as one of Georgia’s premier golf championships, featuring top talent from throughout the state. Golf Central • Volume 27, Issue 6

Tizayi Sithole selected to receive the 2026 Larry Powell Scholarship Sithole is a graduate student completing his master’s degree through Penn State World
Tizayi Sithole has been named
the recipient of the 2026 Larry Powell Scholarship from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). Sithole is currently pursuing a master’s degree in turfgrass science management through Penn State World Campus and serves as an assistant superintendent at the Country Club of New Canaan in New Canaan, Conn. The scholarship, funded by donors through the GCSAA Foundation, is named after 52year GCSAA member Larry Powell, superintendent at Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio. The course, built by his father, the late Bill Powell, is the only facility in
50
Ohio that has been designed, built, owned and operated by an African American. Bill and Larry became the only African American fatherson members of GCSAA. The Powell family, which includes Larry’s sister Renee, the second African American to play on the LPGA Tour, was honored with GCSAA’s Old Tom Morris Award in 2019. Sithole, a native of Africa and six-year member of GCSAA, received his bachelor’s of science in agriculture, agronomy and crop science from the University of Zimbabwe in 2016. His completion of a master’s of science in turfgrass science, golf course operation and grounds management through Penn State World Campus will be made possible thanks to the Larry Powell Scholarship. While golfing at in Zimbabwe, Sithole met members of the grounds crew.
“That experience inspired me to learn more about the turfgrass industry, and I discovered that greenkeeping is a respected profession with meaningful career opportunities,” Sithole said. “I am continuing my education so I can grow in this field and inspire others to recognize the value of this career path.” Sithole’s educational background also includes HNC (Higher National Certificate) in golf course management from SRUC (Scotland's Rural College) and HNC in sports turf management and maintenance from The Ohio State University, both completed in 2021, and an HND (Higher National Diploma) in golf course management obtained through SRUC in 2024. “My long-term dream is to help advance and strengthen the turfgrass industry in Africa. I hope to continue my education to the Ph.D. level, build expertise in turfgrass science and management, and eventually move into turfgrass consultancy,” he said. “I also want to create initiatives that introduce more young people to the industry and help them see turfgrass management as a respected and rewarding career path.” As a member of GCSAA, Sithole has made friends and connected with peers from around the world, and he has learned a great deal through the association’s educational platforms. GCSAA’s certification programs have helped him grow professionally, secure meaningful jobs, and gain respect and support from others in the industry. “This award means a great deal to me. I am grateful for the legacy Mr. Powell left behind, which continues to encourage people like me to advance in the turfgrass industry,” he said. “I am honored to receive this scholarship, and I hope to serve as a proud ambassador for the award moving forward. Winning it has strengthened my confidence and affirmed my commitment to this profession.”

Husqvarna Brings Autonomous Mowing to the 2026 U.S. Senior Women’s Open Husqvarna, the World Leader in
Robotic Mowing*, showcased the future of golf course maintenance as a featured sponsor of the maintenance team at Barton Hills Country Club during the 2026 U.S. Senior Women’s Open in Ann Arbor, Michigan. During the tournament, a fleet of Husqvarna robotic mowers maintained select areas of the course, marking the tournament among the first official USGA events to incorporate robotic mowing into course maintenance. This milestone reflects Husqvarna’s dedication to turf quality, leadership in robotic mowing and innovation in autonomous solutions for professional turf care. “The U.S. Senior Women’s Open provided the perfect stage to showcase the growing role of robotic mowing in course maintenance,” said David Plaster, Vice President of Golf & Sports at Husqvarna North America. “Barton Hills Country Club has embraced the technology as an integral part of its maintenance program, making it an ideal venue to demonstrate what’s possible for golf facilities across the industry.” Recognized as one of Michigan’s premier golf destinations and consistently ranked among Golf Digest’s Top 25 courses in the state, Barton Hills Country Club was an early adopter of autonomous mowing. As one of the first golf courses in North 52
America to integrate robotic mowing into the maintenance of its fairways and roughs, the club continues to expand its fleet of 30 mowers with newer models, including Husqvarna’s Automower® 580L EPOS® and 535 AWD EPOS®. “Since adopting Husqvarna robotics in 2022, we’ve seen firsthand the impact autonomous mowing can have on our operation, from healthier turf and more consistent playing conditions to allowing our team to focus on higher value work across the course,” said Andrew Christesen, Golf Course Superintendent at Barton Hills Country Club. “We’re proud to highlight that approach during the U.S. Senior Women’s Open and demonstrate how robotics can help support championship level course conditions.” orting the deployment throughout the championship is
SynaTek Solutions, Husqvarna’s regional Golf & Sports Turf partner, whose expertise has helped Barton Hills successfully implement its robotic mowing fleet. “Unlike traditional equipment dealerships, supporting Husqvarna robotic mowing solutions goes beyond providing exceptional service and repair,” said Nate Clemmer, CEO of SynaTek Solutions. “Our team works tirelessly to serve as an integrator, bridging the gap between golf course maintenance and technology to help customers successfully implement autonomous mowing.” The collaboration between Husqvarna, Barton Hills Country Club, and SynaTek Solutions demonstrates how innovative technology, trusted dealer support, and forward-thinking golf course professionals are helping shape the future of golf course maintenance.

Audubon International Monarchs in the Rough Program Earns Significant Grant from Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation For the second time, Audubon
International has received a significant grant from Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation to support its Monarchs in the Rough program. The organization’s first such grant was in 2019. Monarchs in the Rough promotes the conservation of monarch butterflies by transforming out-ofbounds and other underutilized areas on golf courses into vibrant pollinator habitats. Audubon International provides technical guidance and other resources to plant milkweed and nectar plants essential for monarch survival, restoration of monarch populations and biodiversity, and enhancement of the natural beauty of golf courses. “Monarchs in the Rough aligns with our mission of serving fellow golf-industry collaborators and stewarding the environment,” said Doug Myslinski, Director of Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation. “Each year, we are incredibly impressed by the way Audubon
54
International conducts Monarchs in the Rough and a vast array of other eco-friendly initiatives.” “Audubon International is honored by the faith Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation bestows on us,” said Ken Benoit, Interim CEO of Audubon International. “Saving the monarch butterfly by growing vital habitats, breeding and migration patterns on golf courses
is sustainability as its finest.” Through Audubon International, more than 1,000 golf courses, country clubs and communities of public, private and semiprivate varieties have participated in Monarchs in the Rough, helping revive a monarch butterfly population that has declined more than 90% the past two decades. Roughly 125 golf course superintendents enrolled in the program for the first time last year alone. Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation follows a growing legion of corporate contributors of funds supporting Audubon International’s mission to help golf courses, country clubs and communities achieve environmental stewardship certifications for protecting areas where we all live, work and play. A Turf Pirate's Journal $ Time Marches On $
Welcome Turf Pirates to one of our
favorite times of the year, soon it will be Fall, to be exact September 22 marks the Fall equinox this year and the official start of Autumn. I know it seems like it’s always the 21st but not this year, check your almanac if you need clarity. I know that the suspense is driving you crazy, so I am honored to give you the answer to last month’s quiz. The photo of the rocks in the truck bed was taken in the parking lot at the legendary Temple Hills Golf Club just outside of Nashville, Tennessee and Home to the legendary Turf Pirate, Larry “Goose” Goostree where he has been keeper of the greens for more than 30 years. Goose is one of the best you will ever run into in this or any business. I have had the please of riding the 27 holes at Temple Hills with Goose many times and no matter what the weather he has the place in top shape (even after the big Ice Storm of 2026). Let’s take a quick time out for a Turf Pirate salute to everyone with more than three decades on the same links. SALUTE! Which brings me to the point of this month’s spin, time. We are all caught up in the essential matter of time and how we use it or more precisely how we deal with the fact that time marches on. Relentless is how my dad spoke about the advance of years, but he also knew that every farmer plants in the spring and hopes for a harvest in the fall. I am usually compared to being a fiveyear-old as I often do the things that five-year-olds do, mostly be joyful and believe anything is possible and ignore the naysayers that are absolutely no fun at all including time bandits. Thus, the sign at the HQ entrance, Work Like a Captain, Play Like a Pirate. Yet, as I set in the new War Room at the conference table that once belonged to one of my mentors (Randy McMichael) in the Galactic Headquarters of the Ancient and 56
Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirates it does strike me that for over 40 years, I have chased this dream and now it is real. Now what? The first order of business is to simply be in the moment. It’s harder than you think but this is where we should open our minds that whether we have one hour or another 100 years left to live, we
are the captain of this our earthly ship on the sea of time immortal and I, for one intend to make the most of it. I have a new title and responsibilities at work; I am still president of our HOA, and I have a new dozen arrows that must be tested, the way a five-year-old tests bows and arrows. I also have a foursome of rocking chairs that face west overlooking the North Oconee River on what we have dubbed the “Back Porch” though it seems to be the hub of the new building. For my Appalachian friends and family yes, the porch ceilings are all painted “Hant Blue” IYKYK. This fact though I have repeated it several times seems to leave some folks behind to catch the next bus. I have written a lot about time management over the years and work-Life balance as well. The truth is we make time for the things that matter and blame time for the road not taken. Look fast Turf Pirates because life does indeed move pretty fast, we must adjust the rudder for light speed when necessary. I look forward to Fall and the slowing down of the summer hustle and the speeding up of campfires that will be enjoyed as the nights get cold. Seasons change Turf Pirates and we move the agronomy and the personal plans around to be ahead of the stresses and craft the best life we can. A life and legacy that is worthy of those who have invested in us and toiled alongside us. No big secrets, just awareness and effort. It’s almost time for new calendars, new years and new awakenings. Time marches on Turf Pirates and that is just a fact not an anchor, but we of all God’s creatures can see the road behind us as well as the vision of what lies ahead. Plan the work and work the plan Turf Pirates and time will be your friend and synergy will pop up where you least expect it. Until our paths cross again Turf Pirates may you always have time for the things that truly matter. Golf Central • Volume 27, Issue 6
