Five Motets
About Five Motets the composer writes: “I wrote the first motet in Pittsburgh in 1991. The rest of the motets were composed in Davis, California after 1994, and were inspired by Paul Hillier and Ars NOVA Coenhagen, who premiered them” (June 21-23 1997, Copenhagen, Denmark).
‘In Monte Oliveti’ is the first of the nine responsories for Matins of Maundy Thursday. It was written for John Goldsmith and the Bellafield singers.
‘O vos omnes’ is from Lamentations 1:12, and it is the the fifth of the nine responsories for Matins of Holy saturday. It is dedicated to Eric Moe.
‘Laboravi in gemitu meo’ is the verse 6 of the Psalm 6. It is dedicated to Christopher reynolds.
‘Haec Dies’ is an antiphon at Vespers – Easter Week – Psalm 117:24. It was composed in memory of Dr. Fernando Chirife (1978-1995).
‘Epithalamica’ is based on an Easter sequence by Pierre Abélard. It is dedicated to Mario Lavista.

In Monte Oliveti oravit ad Patrem: Pater, si fieri potest, transeat a me calix iste: Spiritus quidem prontus est, caro autem infirma. Fiat voluntas tua.

O vos omnes, qui transitis per viam, attendite et videte si est dolor similis sicut dolor meus.
3.
Laboravi in gemitu meo, lavabo per singulas noctes lectum meum, lacrimis meis stratum meum rigabo.
4.
Haec dies quam fecit Dominus: exultemus et laetemur in ea. Alleluia.
Confitemini Domino quoniam bonus quoniam in saeculum misericordia eius.

Epithalamica dic Sponsa, cantica, Intus quae conspicis dic foris gaudia et nos laetificans, de Sponso nuntia cuius te refovet semper praesentia. Adulescentulae, vos chorum ducite, Cum haec praecinerit, et vos succinite. Amici Sponsi vos vocarunt nuptiae, et novae modulos optamus Dominae. Epithalamica dic Sponsa, cantica, Intus quae conspicis dic foris gaudia.

On the Mount of Olives he prayed to his father: Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass away from me. The spirit indeed is ready, but the flesh is weak. Your will be done.

O all you that pass by, behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow.

I am weary with my groaning: all the night I make my bed to swim;
I water my couch with my tears.

This is the day which the Lord hath made: let us be glad and rejoice therein. Alleluia.
Praise the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endures for ever.

Tell forth, O bride, your bridal canticle!
Tell outwardly the joys you gaze upon from within, and, gladdening us, give tidings of the bridegroom, whose presence means new life for you, for ever!
Young maidens, sing! dance!
When she, the bride, begins her song, join in!
The bridegroom’s friends have called you to the nuptials, and we wait to hear the songs sung by the new liege Lady.
Tell forth, O bride, your bridal canticle!
