Simon Løffler Monodactyl (2016) for 5 musicians Dur. 7′30″
PERFORMANCE NOTES This piece is for 5 musicians, each playing a small instrumental set-up with 1 of the 5 fingers on the hand. The instruments and their playing techniques are explained below. Musician 1 – Thumb The thumb has a small stick attached to it, which is used to strike a bell, and plays on a retractable pen. It requires some practice to play this part without fatiguing. Note heads A black triangular note head indicates a depressing AND releasing of the pen, a white triangular note head indicates to not depress entirely (but still release), which will be a very soft sound as there is no ‘click’:
Staff The 3 staff lines indicate 3 different hand positions 1. Top staff line: Hold the pen normally in 2. Middle staff line: Hold the hand front of the body: against the chest, which produces a slightly more damped (lower) sound:
3. Bottom staff line: Hold the pen down against the chest as in the 2nd position, and hold the other hand over it (with a soft glove on), to produce an even more damped sound: The movement from one position to the other should be short but smooth (approximately a 16th note). Bell A small stand with a bell is placed close to the musician. The bell is struck with the stick by straightening the thumb upwards (from hand position 1): Bell notation:
Musician 2 – Little finger Both little fingers are used as one finger. Arms are crossed and both little fingers are placed through two holes in a small piece of wood (or similar material), in this manner the little fingers can bend as one:
The player now holds the tuning in between the two poles. When the fingers are bend upwards in a quick motion, the edge of the tuning fork is struck against the back pole and should vibrate for a considerable time:
In the middle of the piece of wood a tuning fork is placed through a hole. The tuning fork should be a deep frequency from about 200 Hz down to about 148 Hz, and needs to be of a quality brand, such as Meinl or Barthelmes.
When the player bends the fingers slightly downwards, the edge of the tuning fork touches different materials hanging on the front pole in small strips of paper. These will then audibly vibrate with the tuning fork.
In front of the player is a small stand with 2 horizontal poles, as shown on the picture below:
The first 3 objects should have timbres that approximately match the 3 timbres of the pen, meaning: high – middle – low timbre. The 4th should the match the timbre of the pen when it is not entirely depressed (white note heads – very soft). These materials are suggested: High timbre – a very thin wooden stick.
Musician 3 – Index finger The index finger on the right hand controls a mechanical metronome. The metronome used is the kind with a bell indicating the first beat. The bell should ring after 6 beats, and the tempo of the metronome is set to the tempo of the piece. A thin stick of about 30 cm is attached to the finger, so that the finger can hold the metronome on its left or right side, until it is released to the other side:
Staff The metronome is placed on a small rail, which enables the other index finger to pull the metronome back and forth. On both sides of the rail are placed 1 and 2 bells respectively:
Stem direction
w
The top staff line indicates that the metronome is all the way back on the rail, not hitting anything.
Stem direction A quarter note with a stem upward indicate that the pendulum arm has been released to fall to the right, with the “tick” sound being heard on the notated beat. Conversely, a quarter note with a stem downwards falls to the left. A small “1” is placed above the beat that starts the cycle of 6 (bell ringing):
The second staff line indicates that the pendulum arm hits the first bell (which will then always be on the left side meaning that the stem is downwards). The third and fourth staff lines indicate when the metronome hits the second and third bells:
Notice in the above example that after the sixth “tock” of the metronome (the 4th beat of bar 3), the arm is kept to the left even after the metronome has returned all the way back. Some practice is needed in attaining a fluid control of both sliding the metronome back and forth, and controlling the pendulum arm.
Middle – a very thin nail:
Low – thin plastic:
Very soft – just paper:
Notation
Striking the tuning fork is notated above the staff as such:
A bell is hanging to the right of the 4 paper strips, and is struck in a similar manner (igniting the tuning fork, and touching the bell), but is always touched only once, no tremolo:
4 staff lines indicate each of the paper strips, with wood being at the top and paper at the bottom. The 4 strips can be made to vibrate faster or slower, according to how much the tuning fork is pushed against them (pushing too much stops the vibrations all together of course). This is notated as 2 degrees of tremolo, either fast or slow:
Moving the tuning fork from the lowest edge of the strip and upwards to the paper part changes the sound. When such a movement occurs, this is notated with 1-3 lines above a note, indicating where on the strip the fork should move from and to; 1 line indicates the lowest edge, 2 lines indicate in the middle of the strip, 3 lines the highest:
When nothing is written above a note, one always play on the lowest edge.
The bell is notated above the staff with a crossed note head:
Lowering the tuning fork down, so that the base touches the tab whereby its pitch is heard, is notated below the staff thus:
Musicians 4 – Middle finger The middle finger have a 30-40 cm long H-profile wooden stick attached to the distal joint (the one at the end):
Playing techniques and their notation Playing on the arm(s): The stick is firstly used to hit the flesh of the arm.
The sound of the stick hitting something slightly softer than the flesh.
And thirdly it hits something quite soft:
The timbral structure of high – middle – low should roughly resemble that of the pen and the tuning fork. The 3 arm sounds are notated with 1, 2 and 3 lines as note heads below the staff. 1 line indicates flesh sound, 2 lines indicating the second, slightly lower, sound, and 3 lines the lowest:
Passing close by a mic On the table to the right of the arm, just above the stick when the middle finger is pointing straight up, is a microphone pointing to the left. When the finger moves rapidly back and forth and the arm lift straight up in the air, the stick passes by the microphone quickly, which produces a wind sound. A windshield standing to the left of the arm reinforces the sound.
Bell In front of the arm, furthest away from the player, stands a bell, which is when the middle finger straightens out towards the surface of the table:
This is notated with a crossed note above the staff:
The wind sound is notated with normal note heads on the staff line. The faster the movement of the stick, the higher the pitch, indicated by different speeds of tremolo as well as dynamic markings. Additionally, single strokes of the stick are notated with single short notes.
Musician 5 – Ring finger The ring finger plays the same techniques as the middle finger. If the finger is too weak for the fast tremolo technique, it can be taped together with the middle finger.
Amplification All instruments should be close miked. The bells might not need amplification, depending on the size of the venue. The general nature of the piece is quite soft. Additional remarks The musicians should sit as close to each as possible in score order. From left to right (facing the audience): Ring finger – Middle finger – Index finger – Little finger – Thumb. The general body movement of each player should be kept to a minimum, so that the finger movements will be the centres of attention.
