NOTE
NOTER
Sonrisa del Juglar – Gaukler (2001) – work 38d The title, translatable as ‘acrobat’ is on the one hand inspired by a Picasso painting La Famille de Saltimbanques (1905) – his so-called blue and pink period – and on the other hand by experiences at the South American continent, where I have toured in Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela and Bolivia with my ensemble Contemporánea.
The work is a recomposed version of the clarinet trio Subrisio Saltat – third elegy (work 38a 1995-96), which is inspired by a text from the Fifth Elegy of Rainer Maria Rilke. Subrisio Saltat is dedicated to Harry Sparnaay (bass clarinet, alto clarinet) and Taco Kooistra (cello) from Holland and Yoko Abe (piano) from Japan, who gave the world premiere of the work on the 27th August 1995 at the Musiana 95 Festival, Louisiana, Denmark. The version “Gaukler” is dedicated to Contemporánea. The work exists in two other versions: Les saltimbanques (work 38b 1997) for bass clarinet and electronics dedicated to Fritz Gerhard Berthelsen and Sonrisa del juglar (work 38c 1998-99) dedicated to Fritz Gerhard Berthelsen and Christian Martínez.
Værket findes i to andre versioner: Les saltimbanques (work 38b 1997) for basklarinet og elektronik tilegnet Fritz Gerhard Berthelsen og Sonrisa del juglar (work 38c 1998-99) tilegnet Fritz Gerhard Berthelsen og Christian Martínez.
Four titles taken from the Fifth Elegy by Rilke are marked in the score:
= troting hearts = the fire of the soles of the foots = bodily tears = from late-latin: Acrobat’s smile
= travende hjerter = brændende fodsåler = legemlige tårer = Gøglerens smil
TEXT FROM THE FIFTH ELEGY BY RAINER MARIA RILKE (1875-1926)
TEKSTAFSNITTET FRA FEMTE ELEGI AF RAINER MARIA RILKE (1875-1926)
Duino Elegies (1912-22) - The fith elegy (1922) – Line 46-61: Translation: J.B.Leishman & Stephen Spender, The Hogarth Press 1948
Duineser Elegier (1912-22): Den femte elegi (1922, linje 46-61), Fru Hertha Koenig tilegnet:
sometimes, in half-pauses, a tenderness tries to steal out over your face to your seldomly tender mother, but scatters over your body, whose surface quickly absorbs the timidly rippling, hardly attempted look… And again that man is clapping his hands for the downward spring, and before a single pain has got within range of your ever galloping heart, comes the tingling in the soles of your feet, ahead of the spring that it springs from, chasing into your eyes a few physical tears. And still, all instinctive, that smile…
Angel! oh, take it, pluck it, that small-flowered herb of healing! Shape a vase to preserve it. Set it among those joys not yet open to us: in a graceful urn praise it, with florally soaring inscription: »Subriosio Saltat«
Duineser Elegien (1912-22): Die fünfte Elegie (1922, Zeile 46-61), Frau Hertha Koenig zugeeignet:
PERFORMANCE NOTES Electronics & tempi The live electronics are performed by a sound projectionist sitting in the middle of the audience with a (digital) mixing console and a (Macintosh) computer. The MaxMSP software makes it possible to obtain a coordination between the acoustic and the electronic parts, which consists of soundfiles and real-time processing, somewhat like that of chamber music. The sound files marked in the score as numbers with a diamond enclosure are dynamically played back which means that in some cases the end of the sound file is prolonged (a buffer zone) by several seconds so that even if the musicians are behind in time they can catch up and synchronise at the start of a new sound file. In other cases the sound files should finish before continuing. This is true for the sound files number 1, 2, 3, 5 & 15. In the section from bar 63-102 the tempo tends to be generally a bit faster than 60, which is absolutely fine in due of the character of the music. For this reason bar 101-102 should be repeated until the culmination of the sound file ends. Take care that bar 98 is not too fast. Sound files number 24, 25, 26 & 27 are very short. Bar 1-11 is fine in a tempo a bit slower than 60. Bar 12-20 is fine at 60 and bars 21-37 should not be slower than 60. Bar 38-62 is fine at 60. Bar 103-129 feels good rather slow for the expression of deep sorrow, but bar 130-167 seems best in tempo. The effects processing of the instruments marked as hexagoned numbers is in real-time. FS means frequency shifting which gives a kind of ring modulation though much more complex in the way programed here. RVB means reverb using a set of MaxMSP objects from IRCAM which is developed using the features of the Spatialisateur project that started in 1991 as a collaboration between IRCAM and Espaces Nouveaux. Here it is used as a multichannel reverb. DLY2 and DLY8 means delay with two respective eight repetitions. FLA means a flanging, here it is programmed to be an ever changing effect using random. NO means no effect.
Bass Clarinet Noteheads with x = sound produced by percussive key Action notes with + = toungued note with simultaneous percussive effect fl.z = flutter tounge Notehead with MP = multiphonic after your choice Glissandi in bass clarinet part: the pitch in the end does not have to be reach exactly, more important is a smooth, inconcrete movement from the starting pitch. The bass clarinet sounds a major 9th lower than written Accidentals are valid for the entire measure only in the octave in question
