In April 2022, I visited Isola in San Michele, Venice, which has been used as a cemetery since 1807.
Even when standing on Fondamente Nove and looking across at the square island with its many cypresses and other trees, it is clear that this is an unusual place. The island is surrounded by a high wall. On the side of the island facing Fondamente Nove, there is a portal in the middle of the wall with a ramp in front of it. This is where the coffins of the deceased arrive at the island.
The visit to San Michele on that beautiful day was a special experience that inspired me to write this work for orchestra and organ.
I must therefore admit that the music is a private matter. I could have chosen to keep the music in my head and let it go with me to the grave, but I nevertheless felt the urge to see the work written down on music paper. And as I sit here now, I am happy to take out the sheet music, let the music ring in my inner ear and thus remind me of this very special day.
However, there are also ideas that come to me in other ways: I have been told that in certain towns in Italy, church bells are rung when a resident has passed away. The bells are slow so that they are not confused with the ringing before mass. These chimes can be heard 12 times from beat 26.
When I later visited Bari in Puglia in 2022, I stood in front of the city cathedral one morning. There was to be a funeral, and the coffin arrived at the church. The bells rang in measures of five beats with two bells, tuned to Db and G, Db on the first and second beats and G on the fourth beat. I have included this striking tritone interval in my piece from bar 217, likewise 12 times.

I april 2022 besøgte jeg Isola i San Michele, Venedig, som har siden 1807 været brugt som kirkegård .
Allerede når man står på Fondamente Nove, og ser over mod den firkantede ø med sine mange cypresser og andre træer, er det tydeligt, at dette er et usædvanligt sted. Øen er omgivet af en høj mur. I den side af øen, som vender mod Fondamente Nove, ser man i midten af muren med en portal med en rampe foran. Det er her kisterne med de afdøde ankommer til øen.
Besøget på San Michele på den smukke dag var en særlig oplevelse og erfaring, som inspirerede mig til at skrive dette værk for orkester og orgel.
Jeg må derfor indrømme, at musikken er en privat sag. Jeg kunne have valgt at beholde musikken i mit hoved og lade den gå i graven med mig, men jeg fik alligevel lyst til at se værket nedskrevet på nodepapir. Og mens jeg endnu er her, er det min glæde at tage noderne frem, lade musikken klinge i mit indre øre og på den måde genkalde mig mindet om denne helt særlige dag.
I værket er der imidlertid også ideer, som kom til mig på anden måde: Jeg har fået fortalt, at der i visse byer i Italien ringes med en kirkeklokke når en beboer i byen er afgået ved døden. Klokkeslagene er langsomme så de ikke forveksles med ringning inden en messe. Disse klokkeslag høres der 12 af fra takt 26.
Da jeg senere i 2022 besøgte Bari i Puglia stod jeg en formiddag foran byens katedral. Der skulle være bisættelse, og kisten ankom til kirken. Der blev ringet i femdelt taktart med to klokker stemt i Des og G. Des på første og andet slag og G på fjerdeslag. Denne gribende lyd af et Tritonusinterval har jeg taget med i mit stykke fra takt 217, ligeledes 12 gange.
