Congratulations to the organizing committee of the 16th Annual Chinese American Film Festival - the first “virtual” Chinese – American festival. Best wishes to my dear friend and colleague James Su, his hard-working EDI team. The importance of continuing the tradition of Chinese American Film festival cannot be overstated in these difficult times. With Sino-American relations at the worst level in over 40 years, it is important to continue the work of sharing Chinese films and culture here in Hollywood and with the film makers from around the world that live and work here. Let them see and be inspired by the diversity and scope of talent that represent the Chinese film and television industry in 2020.

2020 Chinese American Film Festival

Hollywood is still the capital of the American entertainment industry, home of the Oscars, the Golden Globes, many other award shows and a fitting venue for Chinese and Asian cinema. I have watched as James and his hardworking CAFF team have taken this event from its’ very humble beginning to its unchallenged position as the primary forum in North America celebrating contemporary Chinese and Asian Cinema. It is important that we all show our support to the team, the event and to the future improvement of Sino-American relations.

On behalf of Cosmos Pictures and Pandemonium Films, I would like to congratulate the organizers of the 16th Annual Chinese American Film Festival for their dedication to the film industry and for their perseverance during these unprecedented times. Now more than ever, it is important to both maintain and strengthen ties between the American and the Chinese motion picture industries. An ability to work together is necessary in learning how to navigate a new and unfamiliar world post-pandemic, and our responsibility as filmmakers to connect people through storytelling has never been higher in demand.

The films presented during the past fifteen festivals have most certainly broadened American understanding and appreciation of the diverse and bright visions of Chinese filmmakers. This festival has become an important opportunity to both introduce and showcase the skills and talent of generations of Chinese and Asian filmmakers and to broaden understanding of Chinese and Asian culture from its beginnings thru, the first two decades of the 21st century. While the misinformation and lies about China, its’ people and its’ government are increasing on a daily basis- it is important to support the Chinese American Film Festival and all of the goodwill and clarity this festival brings to Hollywood. Showing these films is the best argument against the silly lies and misinformation circulating in this country.

Congratulations again to the Chinese American Film Festival on their continued efforts to unite and entertain. I wish you all the best for your 16th Annual Film Festival.

As I often have said, entertainment and storytelling in all its forms is an important part of every society’s cultural development and cohesiveness. Over time, pop culture as a shared generational experience, becomes a cornerstone of communication and a touchstone of mutual understanding.

Sincerely, Today’s filmed entertainment is part of tomorrow’s global culture. I can think of no better place to showcase China’s ever evolving contemporary culture, than here in the cradle of American “pop culture”. This festival facilitates the exchange of creative ideas between the professionals of both countries and serves as a history of contemporary Chinese society. The festival stands as a beacon of hope.
