Our average class size of 15 students and direct instruction from professors – not teaching assistants – gives you the opportunity to deeply engage in your academic experiences. Nursing student Kaitlyn Hartlieb, ’15, reflects, “my professors supported and encouraged me when I had the opportunity to add work to my very first patient assessment project. Based on her Parkinson’s diagnosis, I was challenged to create a meaningful and valuable wellness plan that was tailored to my patient’s needs and abilities.” You will also find that our classroom doors extend far beyond our 55-acre campus. Indy Stluka, ‘14 has exercised his student-citizen voice working on affordable housing initiatives in the City of Madison through a project at the State Capitol with one of Wisconsin’s state senators. Emma Staudenmaier, ‘14 was excited to learn more about the field of Art Therapy as soon as she arrived at Edgewood College. Art Therapy professor, Janice Havlena, fueled her interest in helping others while giving her hands-on opportunities to explore the profession. As an Edgewood College student you will develop
leadership skills both in and out of the classroom. Nursing student Elena Gjikdhima, ’14, has served as a peer leader and a member of the Student Government Association. Elena has also put her leadership skills to work in the Madison community – she has contributed to the efforts that have raised thousands of dollars for Chelsea’s Hope, an organization dedicated to raising money for breast cancer research. joined the staff of the Appalachia Service Project. Ben renovated sub-standard housing for low-income families in Tennessee. He put his physical strength and team leadership skills to great use changing lives for people who needed a clean, dry and safe place to live. In May 2013, Lorena Kempinen, ’15, early childhood education and Spanish double-major, traveled with other Edgewood College students
to Arequipa, Peru for five weeks as part of the Nourish to Flourish program. Founded by an Edgewood College alumna (Mary Anne Guerrero ’68), the program seeks to develop long-term, sustainable community development efforts in Peru. Lorena helped children plant trees and papaya plants around the local school to make a difference in their community. Lorena explains, “The best part of the experience was being able to help the kids with something that seemed so small but was so monumental for them. Their smiles were priceless.” Elementary education major, Stephanie Wilkins, ’14, has found ways to directly link service work
and academic interests. Stephanie has strengthened her mentoring and leadership skills in her roles as a Commuter Assistant and Orientation Assistant for the Office of Student Activities. By serving as a mentor to local ninth grade students in the Committed to College Program, Stephanie is building a professional network and gaining practical experience in a classroom-setting. Once you discover your passion, we’ll help you become an expert. After deciding to pursue a biology major, Grant Mickesh, ’13 wanted to dig into the field, literally. He pursued grant funding for his summer field research, and worked with a faculty mentor to study frog communication in native and non-native wetlands. His research took advantage of the Edgewood College campus location and other local field research sites. He shared his innovative results with faculty and other students in the biology seminar series and the campus-wide student research conference.

Bailey Kaiser, ’12, sociology and Spanish major, took a position with a property management company located in Montevideo, Uruguay, and is appreciative of her liberal arts foundation: “The Edgewood College curriculum will encourage the development of complex thought processes and help you understand and appreciate the world around you.” Edgewood College professors are committed to your success. They will serve as friends and mentors long after you graduate. Alumna Amanda Conrad, ’10, took a position as a Graphic Designer with Hallmark following graduation. She recently reflected on the support she received as a student. “Portfolio preparation is key in the creative field and Professor Agnieszka Ligendza did a fantastic job at helping me build a portfolio.” Taking full advantage of all of the internship and research opportunities in Madison, Wisconsin, Katie Wendt, ’12, criminal justice major, was able to complete an internship and her senior seminar research project at the Dane County Juvenile Detention Center. After learning about the opportunity from one of her
