It’s technically Winter, but the Tangi calendar of events is HOT! Fairs, festivals, and events are scheduled and ready for another great year! Our local fairs and festivals primarily benefit our local non-profit organizations which operate on thin budgets. Our community’s attendance and participation allow them to serve our area well. We hope to see you while we’re attending and supporting these great events and appreciating the event sponsors which bring our community together in fun fellowship while supporting our charitable service organizations.
Each year, our February/March issue reveals our Tangi Lifestyles Readers’ Choice Winners! With every issue of Tangi Lifestyles, we feature some of the best events, people, and businesses that our area has to offer, and the first issue of each year, we reveal the local businesses that our readers choose as best of the best. We thank the thousands of you who took time to vote, and we congratulate all of this year’s winners and hope you will give them the chance to earn your business.
On behalf of our fellow business owners, we thank the residents of our parish for shopping locally, not only this past holiday season, but for all of 2025. When local businesses do well, they invest right back into our community. We use all of our Northshore Media Group properties to serve and promote the place we all choose to call home. If you enjoy this magazine, we’re sure you’ll also enjoy our local radio stations, Tangi 96.5, Kajun 107.1, and Boss 97.7fm/1400am. Tune in on your radio or download any of our stations’ apps to decide for yourself!
Finally, with each new issue of Tangi Lifestyles, we receive wonderful feedback and appreciation from readers. The input we get from readers shapes our content. Please share your thoughts for stories, your pictures for our SEEN & HEARD section, and your events for our calendar to pics@ cwdfm.com. This magazine exists to celebrate our great community. Cheers to a prosperous 2026!!

BRAD CASCIO:

Written by Hannelore Noahson | Photos by Brittany Dufrene

Brad Cascio is a name you might want to remember if you live in Tangipahoa Parish. A lifelong resident of the area and an Assistant District Attorney for the 21st Judicial District, he’s running for the position of District Attorney with the upcoming election set for November 2026. We recently had the chance to chat with him, and it was clear that he’s passionate about both his community and the role he plays in the justice system. Brad has deep roots in Hammond— he's married to his college sweetheart, Katie, and together they have three kids: Olivia, Sam, and Bennie (named after his father, an honor he holds dear).
With over 12 years of experience as a prosecutor, Brad brings extensive knowledge and impressive results, having secured more than 4,000 convictions. Among those, he proudly cites the first physical castration of a sex offender in the state, a landmark case that he believes underscores the importance of strong legal action against serious crimes.
LOCAL ADVOCATE FOR JUSTICE

When asked why he is the right choice for District Attorney, Brad emphasized the significance of experience in this role. He argues that someone without a background in prosecution simply wouldn’t grasp the weighty responsibilities that come with overseeing felony cases.
"It’s not just about knowing the law," he said. “It’s about understanding what it means to make decisions that impact lives.”
Cascio also highlighted the importance of collaboration with law enforcement, noting that he's P.O.S.T. Certified and regularly rides alongside officers in the field. He feels this relationship is essential for effective prosecution. “We’re all working towards the same goal," Brad explained, "and we have to be able to work together.”

Currently, Brad handles felony cases across three parishes and serves as the City Prosecutor in Denham Springs, where he handles misdemeanors and juvenile cases. That’s quite a full plate! But he wouldn’t want it any other way: “I’d rather have too much to do than nothing to do,” he asserted.
Looking ahead, he envisions some improvements he'd like to implement if elected. One of his key ideas is to establish a team of investigators who would respond to the scene of major crimes, such as homicides, allowing them to connect immediately with victims and their families, and foster trust and communication right from the start. “Building relationships is crucial,” he remarked, underlining the importance of keeping victims informed and involved throughout the legal process. An area where he feels he can make a real difference is in how cases are handled. He believes in involving victims and their families in conversations about the outcomes they desire. “We have 100% discretion as the D.A.,” he explained, “but I want to know what the victims want—what their expectations are.” This approach not only humanizes the process but also ensures that those affected feel they have a voice in their cases.

Lastly, Brad noted the substantial volume of cases he's currently managing—about 300 open felony files per division in the parish, translating to roughly 1,800 ongoing felony cases across the area. Much of this revolves around narcotics, whether it's possession, distribution, or related crimes. With the breadth of experience and a heartfelt commitment to justice, Brad Cascio seems poised to make a significant impact in the District Attorney's office if elected. As he gears up for the upcoming election, it’s clear that he represents more than just a candidate; he represents a dedication to his community and a promise of accountability in their legal system.
As the race for District Attorney heats up, Brad encourages everyone to be proactive in learning what each candidate brings to the table.
“When it comes down to it, I’m a prosecutor, not a politician,” Brad stated, “and, if I’m elected, expect to see some transformative changes ahead!”

LEAVING A LEAVING A LEGACY LEGACY LEAVING A LEGACY
After 49 years, susan duvic hands the keys to daughter, deirdre Doré, and packs her bags for her next great adventure.
Susan's General Store has been Hammond’s cozy little shop filled with eclectic gifts and quirky treasures for the past 49 years. Located on North Cate Street in the heart of the historic district, Susan’s has been a beloved part of the community for decades — a place where locals and visitors alike could find that special something they didn’t even know they were looking for. And that is exactly what owner Susan Duvic was hoping for when she opened the doors in 1977 at the tender age of 21.
The store opened as downtown Hammond was finding its groove as a hub of local businesses, at a time when women were not known to be business owners. From the beginning, Susan’s wasn’t your typical gift shop. It was a place bursting with personality — patchouli-scented air, rows of whimsical décor, unique jewelry, garden flags, funny posters, and all kinds of treasures that made one want to explore every shelf.

Over the years, the shop became more than just a place to browse for gifts — it became a community fixture. They were the first shop to offer gourmet coffee in Hammond, and regulars still stop by to pick up coffee beans that grind while they wait. Chat with Susan, or just enjoy that easygoing downtown vibe that Hammond nurtures so well.
And speaking of Susan — she’s at the heart of the store’s story. For more than 40 years, she’s been the friendly face behind the counter, the welcoming voice that knows what you’re really looking for (even before you do), and the reason so many people think of the shop as a one-of-a-kind experience. Susan, as a single mother of two, watched her children grow up inside the store. The little family of three helped each other make Susan’s become something special.
Throughout the years, they’ve helped keep the store running, pitched in for special events, and shared in all the little moments that make small-town business life special — from holiday rushes to slow summer afternoons — the store’s legacy is woven into the neighborhood’s history.
But all good things evolve, and Susan announced that she plans to retire and close the store at the end of February. After more than four decades of greeting customers, curating fun and thoughtful items, and helping build community one conversation at a time, Susan is ready to pass the torch, take a well-deserved break, and spend some time traveling. While the news is bittersweet for fans of the shop, there’s also a sense of celebration for all those years of memories and connections.
Susan’s daughter, Deirdre Doré, is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® and Managing Partner at United Wealth Management. Her company is a financial planning practice that manages approximately $200 million in assets for families and businesses across Louisiana and neighboring states. She will be converting the building into an additional office for clients in the Hammond area. She plans to keep the historical feel that makes this place so special, while adding some new touches to modernize the building. Deirdre has two daughters that attend Holy Ghost Catholic School and dance at Lemoine Academy of Dance. She is excited to raise her girls in the same building that shaped so much of her childhood, bringing the past and future together.
“I’d really like to thank all of my regular customers and my new customers. To the ones that have been with me for 49 years, please know it's truly been a treasure and a pleasure to have known you for all these years.”

ALWAYS moving forward NEVER standing still
After years of careful planning, co-owners Dion Grossnickle and Dr. Rick Henry are excited to announce a $1,000,000 Aquatics Deck Expansion. The first phase of the expansion, a 25-yard competitive swimming pool with six lanes, is set to open in the spring. Phase two will include an adultonly cold plunge pool, and an adult-only hot tub, which is expected to be completed in late 2026.
North Cypress has recently hired its first full-time aquatics director, Romayne Mayne. This new addition brings extensive experience in both competitive swimming and being a competitive swim coach in Baton Rouge.
With the addition of Coach Mayne, the aquatics deck will most certainly look different starting in 2026, as his number one goal is to build the area’s largest competitive and beginner swim teams. The Tangi Titans will begin registration in early March of 2026.

“For the past 25 years, North Cypress Fitness has been in constant growth. What started out as a 9000 sq foot facility in Downtown Hammond has grown into a facility that is over 70,000 sq feet and sitting on over 9 acres of outdoor facilities. One of our dreams has always been to add a competitive pool to our aquatics deck. We are now blessed to be in a position to make that happen,” explained Dion.
The competitive pool will feature six lanes, giving serious swimmers the space they need to lap swim and practice. Plus, it’ll provide additional room for swim lessons and summer camps. One of the best parts? Camp kids will have their own separate pool, which means peace of mind for everyone—no more juggling between campers and members sharing the same space!

Dion was quick to point out, “Team swimming is not only about competition—it's all about fostering personal growth and teamwork among young athletes. Swimming is a fantastic sport for building confidence. Even if you come in third place, if you’ve improved your time, that’s a win!”
In addition to the $1,000,000 aquatics deck upgrades set for 2026, North Cypress Fitness is planning over $400,000 in facility upgrades for members throughout the year. Some of the investments are already underway include over $200,000 in new cardio equipment that features Precor treadmills, as well as New Arsenal Strength equipment that was recently added. Along with equipment upgrades, North Cypress Fitness is bringing NEW group exercise programs such as Les Mills Heavy, Les Mills Pilates, and Les Mills Shapes, making North Cypress Fitness home to the Northshore’s premier Les Mills group exercise facility.

With all the growth and planning, the partners continue to focus on making North Cypress Fitness a place where the entire family can get active and enjoy a healthier life. The members enjoy family activities like pickleball, family workout classes, and more. For younger guests, they offer the Kids Club, which provides a safe place for kids to play and exercise while their parents use the facility. Although the industry standard is to restrict equipment use to members 15 and older, North Cypress allows children aged 10 and up to use the fitness floor with their parents. This allows families to come in together, learn about fitness together, and start living a healthier lifestyle together.
And the best part? “Everything we offer is complimentary,” explained Dion, “once they’re a member, everything is included.”
Over the past 25 years North Cypress Fitness has been in constant growth by continuing their commitment in bringing Tangipahoa one of the BEST fitness centers in the region. With the changes set for 2026, the club is set to become and even greater hub for not only swimming, but for the entire family to come together in a healthy, fun environment. It’s an exciting time at the club, and we can’t wait to see how the NEW upgrades make a splash! northcypress.com

CONGRATULATIONS WINNERS!
Tangipahoa Economic Development and Northshore Media Group have partnered to bring you the Best of Tangipahoa for 2025. We are honored to salute, promote, and recognize the businesses in Tangipahoa Parish that excel in their fields and provide our area a strong foundation for continued growth.

MARCH MARCH 20-22 20-22

Amite Oyster King, Douglas Kent
Miss Amite Oyster Queen, Sarah Katherine Stant
Amite Oyster Pearl, Amy Kent
Amite Oyster Grand Marshal, Carla Gaines Tate

This means everything to me. I've grown up immersed in it. And to be the face of it now is my way of honoring people like my grandfather and brother who sacrifice day in and day out for the industry.

The roots of the festival stretch back to the mid-20th century, anchored in the rise of the oyster trade in Amite. In 1949, Carlo Venterella and Tony Relan launched the local oyster industry by opening Carlo’s Oyster House, eventually partnering with Anthony “Slick” Venterella and Joe E. Bellavia. By the early 1950s, Amite plants were packaging and shipping oysters far beyond Louisiana’s borders. At its height, the industry supported hundreds of workers.
“The passion our community has for the Amite Oyster Festival is palpable. It's a time for friends and family to unite and share our pride in what we’ve built over the years.”
— Dawson PrimeS, Amite Oyster Festival Board Chairman.

In the spring of 1976, the first Amite Oyster Day was held — a modest one-day community event aimed at honoring the industry. Over time, the celebration moved to downtown Amite and expanded to include not only the three-day festival but also a scavenger hunt, a formal gala, a parade, a chili cook-off, an oyster-eating contest, and even a 5K race that draws visitors throughout March.
Festivalgoers now enjoy live music spanning Cajun, country, rock, and reggae, carnival rides, arts and crafts, and a variety of oyster dishes—from char-grilled to fried and raw on the half shell.
As someone deeply rooted in this celebration, I'm thrilled to share the story of this unique festival that pays homage to the oyster industry and its significance to our community.
— Carla Gaines Tate, Amite Oyster Festival Grand Marshal

Twenty-seven years ago, Chef Tommy Masaracchia and Jimmy Hebert co-founded a downtown restaurant that blended French and Cajun influences in an upscalecasual setting. Over the years, they’ve adapted to changing tastes, e panded their menu, and begun Topé La catering for private events.
A surprise recipe contest win—a Swiss Army knife and later $10,000—put their Porcupine Potato dish on the map. Despite challenges like COVID, they’ve kept loyal regulars, adjusting the menu to customer favorites. With generous portions and a diverse selection, Tommy and Jimmy’s restaurant remains a beloved Hammond staple, celebrated for family involvement and resilience. /

Pharmacists Ricky Mannino and Sadie Mannino Bennett took time from their busy schedule to share with us how Mannino’s Family Pharmacy has built its reputation on serving every need of the community since . Renowned for personalized care, the pharmacy specializes in compounding, IV therapy, hospice and nursing home services, diabetic footwear, weight loss injectables, and more.
Their unwavering commitment is especially evident during crises: after Hurricanes atrina and Ida, they were the first pharmacy to reopen, ensuring uninterrupted care for residents when it mattered most. johnny’s downtown
Est. 1940s
209 W Thomas St.
Also known as Johnny’s Conoco, this is one of the last full-service stations serving Tangipahoa, with roots stretching back to the late 1940s. John Keys and his wife bought the business in 1961 and later passed it on to their sons, Kenny and Daryl, in 1998. The brothers smile as they recall how their dad never really retired. “He started coming less often,” Kenny shares, “but this was his neighborhood, and he was still here every day.”
Recently, the brothers celebrated 25 years of automotive service and maintenance. They know that full service isn’t just about checking oil or filling tanks—it’s about knowing your customers, adapting to their needs, and keeping generations of families on the road. In a world full of quick stops, Johnny’s stands for true service.

The Life Changing Work of Family REACH Alliance
Written

ACHING HOME REACHING HOME

Family REACH Alliance is dedicated to helping families transition out of hard times into permanent housing and financial independence. Heather Levin, the passionate force behind Family REACH Alliance, an inspiring program dedicated to helping families experiencing homelessness. When it comes to providing shelter and support, Heather and her team are committed to keeping families together during difficult times. As she puts it, "It's a homeless shelter for families to help get them stable and provide supportive services for them."
What sets them apart from the typical homeless shelters is their focus on family unity. Historically, shelters tend to divide families, especially when kids are older, which can add even more stress during an already challenging time. However, Heather emphasizes, “At Family REACH, families can stay together, providing a safe space for parents and their children to weather the storm of homelessness. After all, no one should have to face these hardships alone.“
Heather explains the program's unique structure, which creates a communal environment by utilizing local churches for shelter. From Sunday evening to the following Sunday morning, families share meals, activities, and companionship. Participating churches are asked to host Outreach families one week per quarter. “What happens at a church that stays empty?” she asks rhetorically, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in providing a nurturing atmosphere for those in need. The multidenominational approach is remarkable, showcasing unity in diversity as different faiths come together to help families regain stability. The program can accommodate up to five families or 15 individuals at a time. Since they transport families to and from shelters, preschool, and other locations, maintaining a manageable number is essential for providing personalized support.
Beyond shelter, Family REACH Alliance offers a variety of programs designed to help families get back on their feet. Heather plays the role of a connector; the organization acts as a central hub for resources. They help families navigate government assistance programs, including SNAP benefits and childcare assistance. The focus is clearly on empowerment, requiring families to save 80% of their income while participating in the program. Heather notes, “We never set a family up to fail.”

There’s an emphasis on sustainable solutions, ensuring families have a real chance at financial independence when they transition to permanent housing. The average stay is from 30 to 90 days, depending on the family's needs. Heather and her team work closely with families to develop individualized plans that may include job searches, resumé building, and education. The goal? Equip families with the skills and confidence to thrive independently.
In communities across the Northshore, the work of Family REACH Alliance symbolizes hope and resilience. By providing shelter, support, and resources, they are not just addressing homelessness —they're building bridges to a brighter future. As Heather passionately shares her mission, it’s evident that every family that walks through those doors is more than just a statistic; they're individuals deserving of dignity and a second chance.
If you’re looking to make a difference, there are various ways to support Family REACH Alliance— from volunteering to donations. With contributions, they can continue their meaningful work, ensuring that families have a safe place to stay and the resources they need to flourish. Because at the heart of it all, it's about bringing hope back into families' lives. Visit .familyreachsela.org for more information.

A Ponchatoula native, Lauren L. Lee has called Tangipahoa home all her life. One of four siblings to David and Patricia Landaiche, Lauren is an enthusiastic alumna of Ponchatoula High School and Southeastern Louisiana University. She and her husband Jacob Lee are proud parents of Rhett (7) and Palmer (6) as well as Darla, the family Golden Doodle. Lauren is currently the Marketing Director for First Guaranty Bank and serves on the Tangipahoa Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors. She also enjoys reading and going to the gym when not chasing her children’s dance, swim, and basketball events. Aside from her love of family, these are Lauren’s 5 Favorite Things…

1
Supporting Local
Born, raised, and living in Tangipahoa Parish, Lauren has a strong love for her community. She always makes it a priority to shop with locally-owned businesses, to eat at locally-owned restaurants, and to enjoy our many festivals and fairs with her family and friends (Strawberry Festival in particular).
The Water
Lauren believes Louisiana isn’t called “a Sportsman’s Paradise” for nothing! Growing up, Lauren spent many summers on the Tangipahoa River and Manchac Pass enjoying tubing, skiing, wakeboarding, fishing, riding jet skis, crabbing, and casual boat cruises. Not limited to local waterways, beach trips are also treasured with her kiddos! The salt water, early morning coffee on the balcony, relaxing by the Gulf, building sandcastles with the family, nighttime “crabbing” with the kids does a soul good.

Friendships
Lauren absolutely loves her people and is so grateful for everyone who’s part of her world. She’s all about connection through every chapter of life. From preschool besties who’ve stuck around forever to new friendships through work and kids’ activities, she keeps her circle full, close, and super supportive. She’s a total girls’ girl and shows up, cheers loud, and loves hard.
4
Sports and Cheering for our HOME teams:
As a Southeastern Louisiana University and Ponchatoula High School Alumna, Lauren bleeds green. You can often find her at SLU sports games and PHS girls' basketball games (shoutout to the coach!). The school spirit runs deep in her family, so you’ll also find her kids cheering very enthusiastically from the sidelines. She’s also known to play a little friendly backyard volleyball and softball as she encourages her kids to be active, too. Fun Fact: She’s known to be VERY competitive!

5
Music

Music is a big part of Lauren’s life. Whether she’s listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd or Fleetwood Mac in the backyard, turning her car into a Backstreet Boys/ Britney Spears concert (she’s OBSESSED), or cruising the water with Morgan Wallen and The Red Clay Strays, Lauren never misses a chance to turn up the volume and let loose. From impressive car concerts to supporting her favorite artists, music isn’t just a hobby, it’s her happy place!
