NETBALL MATCH REPORT QUALIFYING FINALS
Ellinbank & District Football Netball League finals commenced at Bunyip Recreation Reserve on Saturday with six netball matches played throughout the day, producing everything from tight junior contests to commanding senior performances. With a place in the Second Semi Final on the line, teams brought plenty of pressure, intensity and determination as the EDFNL finals series got underway. Yarragon and Lang Lang produced a thrilling start to the finals series, with the Panthers holding their nerve for a one-goal victory. After Lang Lang scored the opener, Yarragon responded with the next four and strong defensive pressure helped the Panthers take a 6-4 advantage into quarter-time. The Tigers worked their way back into the contest to trail by just one at half-time before an impressive 10-goal third quarter swung the game, giving Lang Lang an 18–16 lead at the final change. Yarragon immediately erased the deficit with the opening two goals of the fourth and from there it was a genuine arm wrestle. The sides traded goals deep into the final minutes before the Panthers edged ahead 2120 when the siren sounded.

series was awarded to Lang Lang Goal Defence, Iza V. Next up the 15s and Lang Lang made the brighter start and scored the opening three goals before Buln Buln settled into the contest, edging ahead 6–5 at quarter time. From there, the Lyrebirds pressure through the midcourt and defence began to tell, building a four-goal half-time advantage. Lang Lang continued to challenge in slippery conditions and remained within reach at the final change, but Buln Buln held their composure in a tough final quarter to secure a five-goal win, 23-18 and advance to the Second Semi Final. The umpires awarded Best on Court to Buln Goal Attack, Indy M. Lang Lang were attempting third time lucky, with the 17s on court, scoring the opening couple of goals, but Catani quickly lifted their intensity and defensive pressure to take control of the first quarter. Their ability to win possession and convert consistently saw the margin grow to 14 goals by half-time. Lang Lang kept working and produced some strong passages through the second half, but Catani continued to edfnl.org.au

move the ball cleanly and capitalise on turnovers. The Blues finished strongly to record a 26-goal victory, 55-29 with Goal Attack Ruby F named Best on Court for Catani.
Moving from juniors to seniors with C Grade, Catani scored the opening goal, but it was all Ellinbank from then, responding quickly and with good defensive pressure, converting turnovers to establish a 12-5 quarter-time lead. Ellinbank’s midcourt and defensive work continued to create opportunities in the second, stretching the margin to 14 goals at the main break. Catani produced a much stronger third quarter and matched Ellinbank goalfor-goal, but the early deficit proved too difficult to overcome. Ellinbank regained control in the last and finished with a 19goal win, easily accounting for the Blues, 38-19. Ellinbank’s Goal Keeper Phoebe Pratt was named Best on Court.

Longwarry wasn’t going to let injury or pregnancy be a factor in a Qualifying Final, starting the game strongly, creating early turnovers. However, the experience of Ellinbank, allowed them to settle and use full-court pressure to take a 12-7 lead into quarter time. Longwarry continued to challenge through the second, but Ellinbank remained composed and gradually extended their advantage to seven goals at the main break. Ellinbank took control in the third, forcing turnovers and converting their opportunities to open up a 33-20 lead. Longwarry responded with their best scoring quarter of the match in the last, but Ellinbank’s earlier work proved decisive as they closed out a 44-30 victory. The umpires named Rhiannon Haines, Ellinbank’s star Wing Defence, as Best on Court for the match.

Bunyip on a home court and with the crowd right behind them, burst out of the blocks with the first four goals and used strong defensive pressure and clean movement into the circle to establish an early lead. Neerim South continued to compete, but Bunyip’s attacking connection helped them extend the margin to 14 goals by half-time.
Neerim South lifted their defensive intensity after the break and made Bunyip work for every opportunity, but the Dog’s remained composed and controlled the contest through the second half to finish with a 20-goal victory, 63-43. Talise Berryman in Goal Shooter was a key to Bunyip’s victory, named Best on Court.

NETBALL MATCH REPORT ELIMINATION FINALS The Ellinbank & District Football Netball League finals continued at Yarragon on Sunday, with six Elimination Finals and no second chances on offer. From the opening 13s contest through to a one-goal A Grade thriller, the day produced plenty of pressure, momentum swings and determined performances as teams fought to keep their 2026 seasons alive. Bunyip and Catani opened the day in the 13s, with the contest starting evenly before Bunyip created a small break to lead 8-3 at quarter-time. Catani continued to apply pressure and both teams created turnovers, but Bunyip edged further ahead to take a 14-7 advantage into the main break. Catani found some momentum in the third and reduced the margin, but Bunyip responded when challenged and made the most of their opportunities in the final term. The Bulldogs held on for a 28-20 victory, with Goal Shooter Maddy D named Best on Court for Bunyip.

Next up, Bunyip made the stronger start in the 15s, leading Neerim South 6-4 at quarter-time. Neerim South’s

defensive pressure kept them in the contest, and they continued to work their way back, with the teams locked together at 17 a piece, heading into the final quarter. With the game there to be won, Bunyip produced their best quarter of the match. Strong attacking play and accurate finishing helped the Bulldogs break away late to record a 30-22 victory. Bunyip Goal Attack Meg O-P was awarded Best on Court. Neerim South started the 17s strongly against Poowong, using pressure to force turnovers and build a 9-4 quarter-time lead. Poowong responded in the second, briefly taking control before Neerim fought back to hold a narrow 16-15 advantage at half-time. Poowong lifted again after the break and took a four-goal lead into the final change. Neerim South continued to challenge, but Poowong showed composure and shooting accuracy when it mattered to secure a five goal win, 39-34. Wing Attack come Shooter, Holly H was named Best on Court for Poowong. Moving into the senior grades, Neerim

South and Bunyip went goal-for-goal early in C Grade before Neerim South capitalised on turnovers to establish a 14-8 quarter-time lead. Bunyip came out determined in the second and continued to create opportunities, but South’s movement into the ring and defensive pressure kept them six goals clear at half-time. Bunyip remained competitive and produced some important intercepts through the second half, but the Cats continued to convert their opportunities and gradually extended the margin over the Dogs. Neerim finished with a ninegoal victory, 41- 32, with Goal Keeper Megan Preston named Best on Court for Neerim South.

The final match of the day delivered a thriller, with Buln Buln making the stronger start against Poowong in A Grade. The Lyrebirds led 12-7 at quartertime before Poowong responded with an excellent second term, but Buln Buln remained composed to hold a six-goal advantage at half-time, extending that margin to eight by the final change. Poowong threw everything at the contest in the last, producing a huge 16-goal quarter to close rapidly on Buln Buln. The Lyrebirds held their nerve in the frantic final minutes and survived by the narrowest of margins, 47-46 in a fantastic display of competitive and fierce netball. Buln Buln Centre and Coach, Renee Cook was named Best on Court, bringing a dramatic day of Elimination Finals to a close.

Catani’s defensive pressure set the tone early in B Grade against Nilma Darnum, helping the Blues establish a 10-7 quarter-time lead. Catani then took control in the second, linking well from end to end, and finishing accurately to open up a 27-16 advantage at half-time. Nilma Darnum lifted their defensive intensity after the break and continued to compete strongly in warm conditions, but Catani kept creating turnovers and winning the ball back with fresh legs from the bench. The Blues completed
a strong four-quarter performance to record a 49-32 win over the Bombers, with Catani’s Goal Keeper Hannah Russell named Best on Court.

What a big first week of finals! Saturday was a busy day filled with lots of excitement. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our volunteers who assisted with the set up and pack up of Saturday’s Qualifying final, ensuring it all ran smoothly.
Finals action started with our B grade girls getting the job done against Neerim South. Bunyip settled into the game and found their groove early, applying pressure all over the court. Talise Berryman was named best on court by the umpires after an impressive 52 goals, which helped her team finish the match with a 63 - 43 victory. Bunyip will take on Ellinbank in the semi this week, which has seen mixed results throughout the season. Our under 13’s started the day firing on Sunday at Yarragon. This may have been the first taste of finals for some of them but it certainly did not show as they were able to jump to a 7 goal lead against Catani. It was a hard fought battle between Bunyip and Neerim south in the under 15’s match on Sunday. There were numerous lead changes throughout the game, with Neerim finding the ring easily. Bunyip tried some different combinations to outplay their opponent but nothing could split the two teams. Bunyip went into the last quarter down by a goal but were determined to not let the match go and dug deep to bring home a 30 - 22 win! Meg O-P was awarded best on court by umpires.

Week 2 of EDFNL finals see Bunyip Football Club well represented. Our club pups, U16s, have had an absolutely stellar year once again, going through the home and away season undefeated. We couldn’t be prouder of their achievements and we look forward to getting around the team on Saturday at Catani.
Our Senior and reserves sides put on a show at Yarragon last Sunday. The atmosphere in the changerooms after both games was electric. So many happy faces after a few years of slugging it out. We made a pact on our pre season camp, that we would stick together, work hard and aim for finals. Everyone stuck to the plan and we did it. Anything can happen from here on in. We are all in awe of the turnaround the players have committed to. Head coach, Brad has delivered what he set out to do, along with his team on the bench and the team behind the scenes, we couldn’t be prouder of the red, white and blue. Sunday at Longwarry brings another big test, but ya gotta be in it to win it, so who knows what can happen. The Bunyip Football Club community are certainly up and about. The clubrooms were certainly a happy place to be last Sunday night. We couldn’t be happier with the support from our amazing volunteers last Saturday when we hosted the first Saturday of EDFNL finals. Our ground looked a treat and our facilities catered for the day. Blessed with great weather, we saw a huge crowd come through the gates. Thanks to everyone involved for making the day run smoothly. Hats off to Yarragon for hosting last Sunday and good luck to all clubs hosting the rest of the finals series.

The sun was hot and high as our C Grade girls started the game on fire. Neerim South were soon able to stop the flow and Bunyip defenders were put under pressure by a quick moving attack. Neerim were able to push the margin out throughout the game, however Bunyip did not give up hope and were able to win the final quarter. A small victory in their 9 goal loss.

CATANI Finals Week Two Welcome back, Catani Army, to Week Two of Finals! The big stage is set, and we’re ready to bring the noise once again. We kick off Day One of Finals right here at home, hosting the First Semi Final, with our 17 & Under taking to the court. A huge day of finals netball awaits, and we can’t wait to see the Catani Army out in force! A massive thank you to all of our volunteers who continue to put in countless hours behind the scenes and on game day. Your efforts are what make these days possible, and we’re incredibly grateful. LAST WEEKEND | FINALS RECAP 17 & Under A huge performance from our 17 & Under girls, running away with a 26-goal win over Lang Lang. Congratulations to Ruby Francis, who was deservedly awarded Best on Court! What a way to kick off their finals campaign. C Grade Our C Grade girls came up against Ellinbank and fought hard, producing a strong third quarter to work their way back into the contest. Unfortunately, they couldn’t overcome Ellinbank’s early lead. The good news? They’ve got a second chance, and we know they’ll come back ready to fight. 13 & Under The Baby Blues took on Bunyip, having previously recorded one win and one loss against them this season. They battled right to the end, going down by just eight goals. A fantastic effort from our young girls and a season they can be incredibly proud of. Under 18s Perfect conditions at Yarragon set the scene for a cracking contest. Dre Timmins came out firing, booting four goals in the first quarter and looking every bit the match winner. From there, an arm wrestle unfolded for the next two quarters as Trafalgar fought their way
back to level the game heading into the final term. When it looked like the game may have slipped away, the boys dug deep and found two crucial goals to get themselves through to another final. Now, a tough clash against Buln awaits. It won’t be easy, but why not us? B Grade A dominant defensive performance set the tone from the opening whistle against Nilma Darnum. The girls produced a strong fourquarter effort, with relentless pressure across the court. Congratulations to Hannah Russell, who was awarded Best on Court! We are also hosting Sunday’s finals at the Nest, which is a massive day for our club. A huge thank you to everyone who has already put their hand up to fill a time slot and help out. Hosting finals takes a lot of work, but it is made so much easier when everyone chips in, and we really appreciate everyone doing their part.
Our Seniors are back in action against Trafalgar after earning a well-deserved week off, finishing the home and away season on top of the ladder. They’ve put together an incredible season to get themselves into this position and will be ready to hit the ground running on Saturday.

For 27 years, Damien Morley has been the Team Manager of our Reserves, and after this season he will hang up the clipboard for the final time. Damo is the type of person every club hopes to have; reliable, loyal, always up for a laugh and, above all, just a genuinely great bloke. For nearly three decades, he has been there week in, week out, giving his time and doing whatever was needed for the team and the club. Damo and his wife Jenny have been incredible supporters of our club over the years and are two wonderful local people who have given so much to our community. Twenty-seven years of commitment to one role is an incredible contribution and one that certainly doesn’t go unnoticed.

What a year 2026 has been for the Yarragon Football Netball Club! This season marked an exciting new chapter for Yarragon Football Netball Club, as the Club enjoyed its first full year in the new clubrooms and facilities at Dowton Park. After many years of planning and hard work from so many people, it has been fantastic to see players, members, supporters, volunteers and the wider community making the most of the Club’s new home. On the football side, Yarragon welcomed Senior Coach Troy Hemming to the Club for the 2026 season. The Club is incredibly grateful for the contribution of Troy, along with all football and netball coaches, assistant coaches, team managers and support staff across every grade. The time, effort and commitment that goes into preparing and supporting teams each week is significant, and their contribution has played an important role in the season. There have been plenty of achievements to celebrate throughout 2026. The Club recognised an incredible 18 player game milestones across football and netball, celebrating the commitment and loyalty of those who have continued to proudly represent Yarragon in the black, white and teal.

The Club is especially proud of its Under 17 and Under 13 netball sides, who earned their places in the 2026 finals. Their finals appearances are a fantastic reward for the hard work and commitment shown by the players, coaches and support teams throughout the season, and the Club looks forward to seeing both teams proudly represent Yarragon throughout their finals campaigns. While wins, milestones and individual achievements are always wonderful to celebrate, community football and netball clubs are about so much more than what happens on the field and court. Volunteers continue to be at the heart of Yarragon Football Netball Club. Countless hours are contributed throughout the season, both behind the scenes and on game day, to ensure the Club can continue to operate and provide opportunities for its players and community. From the canteen, bar and gate to timekeeping, scoring, setting up, packing up, cooking, cleaning, team management and events, the contribution of volunteers across every area of the Club is invaluable. Yarragon FNC is extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated group of people who continue to give their time to
the Club. The ongoing support of the Club’s valued sponsors is equally important. Their generosity provides vital support to Yarragon’s football and netball programs and assists the Club in continuing to provide opportunities for junior and senior players while maintaining a strong and welcoming environment for members, supporters and the wider community. The Club is incredibly appreciative of the businesses and organisations that continue to get behind the Panthers each year. One of the greatest strengths of Yarragon Football Netball Club continues to be the people behind it. Another highlight was celebrating four Senior Football debuts throughout the season. Providing opportunities for players to step into senior football is an important part of the continued development of Yarragon’s football program and
an exciting achievement for each of the players involved. There was also plenty to celebrate on the netball court, including two outstanding individual goalscoring achievements. One Senior netballer and one Junior netballer each reached the impressive milestone of 500 goals for the season.
