GRAND FINAL PREVIEW Westmeadows or Burnside Heights will make history in the Airport Toyota Division One grand final as one club walks away with its first senior women’s premiership.

Inaugural female clubs in the competition, the two sides have been on different journeys since that first season, when they met in a preliminary final. Both spent many years in the top flight, before dropping back down into Division One. The Bears played in a preliminary final their first season back in Division One, before narrowly missing out on glory the past two years having made the grand final. Westmeadows set about rebuilding its culture last year after dropping down and getting back to getting some wins on the board. This served as a launchpad for an unbeaten season. The Tigers entered this year as one of the favourites and the side was keen to taste success. The core group from last year returned and they added a couple of other players. Sarah Wright was the big signing for the Tigers and the division, while Ella Guest has slotted in nicely.

Mackenzie and Jameson Best returned to the club from Roxburgh Park. Of the squad that lost the elimination final 12 months ago, 16 of those players played in the qualifying final this year showing the buy-in from the playing group. Guest and the two Best sisters were also part of the qualifying final side this year. The other three inclusions were inaugural captain Jacinta Scott, Taylor Jones, and Courteney Munn. All three key players for the Tigers. Munn has been a revelation this season. The former AFLW player has made multiple teams of the year previously, but her and Jones had a big off season and it’s shown. She’s kicked 47 goals to claim the goalkicking award. It hasn’t been a lone hand down forward with three other Tigers players in the top 10 for goals this season. The likes of Ruby Smith and Courtney Bligh have taken extra steps, while three-time league best and fairest winner and Tigers coach Gemma Wright keeps doing what she’s always done.

AIRPORT TOYOTA DIVISION ONE GRAND FINAL PREVIEW

While the Tigers were favourites, the Bears were one of the unknowns in the new combined division.

The Tigers on the other hand, felt they were still in control with the wind at their disposal in the final quarter.

After having a core group in previous years, the Bears lost some of their biggest names.

They had different players stand up when they needed to get over the line.

Captain Kayla Ravanello, three-time league best and fairest winner Krissy Trang, Holly McGregor, and Sina Mason all departed the club.

While it seems like a battle between experience and youth, grand finals present different challenges.

The question was whether the next generation of Bears could step up. They suffered a 45-1 loss to Westmeadows in Round 1, but the answer to the question quickly followed. Burnside’s next loss came in the final round, yet again to Westmeadows, having already secured second spot. For the Bears, the process and system stayed the same this year despite the different line up.

More Bears players have played in senior football grand finals than Tigers players, but the Tigers have several players who have come up big in finals in different competitions and sports. Three of the five Airport Toyota Division One grand finals have been decided by less than 10 points, so expect a close one. Will it be the fairytale of the perfect season for the Tigers, or will it be third time lucky for the Bears?

Those who had been in the shadows in the past stepped up and showed they could take the lead. Youth continued to be a focus for the Bears as players from their under 19s got their opportunities. Two made their debuts in this year’s preliminary final win against Keilor Park and are set to play in the grand final. Just eight players from last year’s grand final loss played in the side’s preliminary final last weekend, which shows the growth in this side and how different they are. While the Tigers have had the wood over the Bears, having beaten them three times, the qualifying final showed that the Bears could take it to them. For three and a half quarters, the Bears led that contest. They felt had they managed one more goal in the third quarter they would have got the job done. Tonja Davis had shut down Gemma Wright.

PREMIER DIVISION PREVIEW

PREMIER DIVISION PREVIEW Oak Park and Strathmore will battle it out for a grand final spot in Saturday's preliminary final at Overland Reserve. In a captivating elimination final victory last weekend, Strathmore came from behind against a strong Essendon Doutta Stars outfit. Oak Park started slow against Aberfeldie in the qualifying final and its dominant final quarter performance wasn’t enough to see it sneak past the Two Blues. The Kangaroos and Mores have met twice this season, with the Mores getting the job done on both occasions, winning Round 14’s most recent encounter by 12 points. Oak Park will be hoping the result can finally swing its way on Saturday. A fast, strong, and threatening side, the Kangaroos know finals footy well and are out to go all the way. Standing above the pack, Holly McGregor and Maggie Styles are two great ruck options for the side, with McGregor also a strong Kangaroo to have in front of goal.

The gold and navy blue’s perfect record against Oak Park will give them some confidence heading into Saturday’s preliminary final, but Strathmore won’t want to cut any corners. Shaun Bannister’s side was tested against a hungry Douttas last Saturday, but a brilliant second half performance was needed to see the Mores move one step closer to premiership glory. Taylah Gilcrist was the difference in the match, scoring five fantastic goals that single-handedly picked the Mores up and rerouted them into the right position. Mabel-Jean Flannery also had a brilliant performance last weekend and was a star in running the ball into attack, something she’ll look to repeat against the Kangaroos. The usual suspects in Talia Motta and Milla Murphy will look to continue their scoreboard attack, with Sarah McKinnon proving she too is someone who can fire in front of goal.

The duo joins Rhianna Nunn as some to watch, with Nunn a key staple in Oak Park’s backline.

Strathmore’s number one ruck in Hollie Lawson will have her work cut out for her against Oak Park’s tall duo, but should be up for some exciting head-to-head battles.

Alexi Kasteliotis has been a late emerger out at JP Fawkner Reserve, scoring two goals in each of her Round 16 and qualifying final appearances.

Will the Mores make their debut on the Premier Division grand final stage and move to one win away from back-to-back premierships across different divisions?

Tayah Kelly will be itching to put the Sherrin through the big sticks after her 11-game streak of scoring big was doused last weekend.

Or will Oak Park have the last laugh against Strathmore and book its place in that one Sunday in August?

Ellie Huggard works well with her teammates to move the ball forward and also has experience at converting strong play into goals. Oak Park fields an outstanding side that’ll look to take control of the game on Saturday, but it’ll need to find goals beyond the half time siren, something it hasn’t done against Strathmore this season. The Mores sit just one win away from a grand final date with Aberfeldie at Windy Hill.

MEN’SWEEKENDOUTLOOK COMMUNITY BANK STRATHMORE PREMIER DIVISION By Luke Mathews Aberfeldie’s season will go on the line when it takes on Strathmore at Clifton Park. The Rillas looked to have sewn up a finals spot after defeating Douttas two weeks ago, however a loss to Greenvale and a series of results mean their spot is now in jeopardy. After sitting on top of the ladder for the whole year, Strathmore now looked destined to finish in second and play off in a qualifying final after going down to Marby last week. Abers has made Clifton Park a fortress in 2026, having only lost one game there this year against Keilor and has an average winning margin of 41 points at the ground. These two sides last met back on the Kings Birthday weekend when Strathmore came away with a 27-point victory with Corey Grindlay booting four goals. One to look out for this week is Hudson Radecki. The defender stepped up in Liam Cavanagh’s absence last week, collecting 31 disposals and nine marks. Abers’ forward line struggled last week, booting only nine goals for the match and will need to find something special this week if it wants to topple the reigning premiers.

18

A loss would have Abers relying on one of Douttas or Marby losing, a win secures their spot. Maribyrnong Park will be hoping to reach a breakthrough finals series when it takes on Hillside at Shark Park. Eight weeks ago, Marby’s season looked to be nearly dead and buried, however a strong run of form and an upset win over Strathmore has the side firming for a finals berth. The Lions could win this weekend and still not make the finals as the side would be relying on either Strathmore to beat Aberfeldie or Greenvale to beat Douttas. Hillside’s season will come to an end this weekend and despite it being a success overall, their recent form has been disappointing with a thumping defeat to Keilor last week. Earlier in the year Hillside came away with a thrilling one-point victory with Robbie Castello booting two goals against his old side. Brandon Ryan is one of their more important players, but was suspended last weekend. Ryan has booted 44 goals for the season which is the third most across the competition and the side hasn’t won a game when he has been kept goalless. One man that will be hoping to drag Marby into the finals is Rory Atkins.

essendondfl.com.au | THE FOOTBALLER

PG

MEN’S WEEKEND OUTLOOK

The prized off-season recruit has just about been the pick-up of the season, averaging 27 disposals and seven score involvements per game. Atkins managed 24 disposals and five score involvements last time out and will need to be restricted if the Sharks are to come away with a win. Keilor will be looking to sew up the minor premiership when it takes on Deer Park at John McLeod Reserve. After starting the year 1-3, the Blues have won 13 games in a row and sit on top of the ladder, firming for a fourth straight minor premiership. Despite being only a game outside the top five, Deer Park’s season is virtually over with the percentage deficit too much to make up even with a win in the final round. When these two sides met earlier in the year, Keilor cruised to a 57-point victory with Chris Kosmas booting four goals. One to follow this weekend is Cody Brand. The full forward has put together another strong season, booting 38 goals in 17 games and is currently sixth in the leading goal kickers tally. The 24-year-old is hitting form at the right time of year, with 10 goals in his last three matches including a bag of five last weekend against Hillside. The sharpshooter managed three majors last time he faced the Lions and another big bag would go a long way in helping Keilor take home the minor premiership. Essendon Doutta Stars will be hoping to lock away a finals spot when it takes on Greenvale at Nipper Jordan Oval. The Stars are currently sitting in fifth and are well placed to play finals footy, however will need a win this weekend to guarantee their place. Douttas will be hoping for better fortunes this week compared to this time last year, after it

THE FOOTBALLER | essendondfl.com.au

missed out on a finals spot when it lost to Keilor and Airport West thrashed Deer Park. Greenvale looks to have resurrected its season after defeating Aberfeldie last week and now sit in ninth spot. The Jets will need to either beat Douttas this weekend or Pascoe Vale to defeat Airport West if it wants to continue playing Premier Division football. Greenvale proved to be no match for Douttas back in Round 9 with Josh Robertson booting four goals. One man that could guarantee that Greenvale will play Premier Division footy next season is Liam Podhajski. The ruck almost single handedly took down Abers last weekend, finishing with 34 disposals, 12 clearances, and 40 hit outs. Douttas have been strong in the ruck all year with Liam Mercieca and Oscar Sasalu leading the way, however they’ll will have their work cut out for them this week. Airport West will be hoping for a miracle in order to save its season when it meets with Pascoe Vale at Raeburn Reserve. The Eagles looked to have saved their season after a win over Greenvale in Round 16, however they dropped back down to last spot after the Jets beat Abers. It now means the Eagles will need to beat Pascoe Vale this weekend and hope Greenvale lose to Douttas in order to remain in the top flight. Earlier in the year, Pascoe Vale recorded a comfortable 80-point victory over Airport West with Lachlan Fazzolari and Tyson Scoble both booting four goals.

STRATHMORE COMMUNITY BANK DIVISION ONE By Noah Wallwork Finals footy returns in the men’s ranks as Oak Park hosts Moonee Valley at Kings Park Reserve in the qualifying final.

19

MEN’S WEEKEND OUTLOOK Both teams secured the double chance and will hope to meet West Coburg with a win, with the losing side playing the winner of the elimination final between Craigieburn and Tullamarine. The last time these two teams faced off was in Round 16, where the Valley won by three points in a nailbiter. Moonee Valley’s Luke Denny dominated in the midfield, with 29 disposals, 10 clearances, and a game-high eight tackles. Lachlan Grant also starred with 28 disposals, nine rebound 50s, and two goals, one of which was the miraculous winner. Anthony Delorenzi was dominant for the Kangaroos in the midfield, with seven clearances and three goals among his 21 disposals. He is averaging 24 disposals for the year, with seven score involvements every game marking him a key man for Luke Williams' side. Paul Pascu supported his teammate in the middle with nine clearances and two goals. It was ultimately decided with Moonee Valley dominating pressure and intensity, being plus seven in tackles and plus 20 in one percenters.

Jamie Gorgievski led the way for the Eagles with six clearances and eight inside 50s. Defender Jai Robinson also dominated in the back 50, with 25 disposals and eight rebound 50s. Nicholas Owens for the Demons controlled affairs in the midfield, winning 57 hit outs and five clearances. Joquin Bugeja was pivotal in defence to record 28 disposals and eight rebound 50s. The Demons will hope to improve their efficiency going forward with the ball, as this is what hurt them. Will it be Craigieburn or Tullamarine continuing on in season 2026?

COMMUNITY BANK STRATHMORE DIVISION TWO By Jake Reeves & Eric Forman The two best sides of the home and away season in Coburg Districts and Glenroy are set to battle it out at Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve for a spot in the grand final. Districts have not made a blunder once this season and have gone undefeated throughout the entirety of the season.

Who wins through for a shot at making the decider?

It has not been a season full of huge blowout wins, but it has been a campaign of consistent football being played by a side full of quality.

Craigieburn will take on Tullamarine in an elimination final at Sewell Reserve.

The Lions will know, however, it all starts again here.

Both teams are coming off a loss and will be hoping to redeem themselves with the winner set to take on the loser of the match between Oak Park and Moonee Valley.

The Roys have also looked strong throughout this season and finished their home and away campaign three games clear in second position.

The two teams last played in Round 10, where the Eagles ran away with a 23-point victory.

In their two meetings throughout 2026, the Lions won comfortably by 24 and 39 points.

Tullamarine dominated possession for the game, but couldn't take care of the footy with 17 more turnovers.

Competition leading goal kicker Curtis Rawlings has been the face of the Districts forward line and has been a huge part of why they have been so good throughout the season with a monster 62 goals on the year.

The majority of that happened in the midfield as the Demons narrowly won the clearances count.

20

With so many weapons up front, however, Glenroy needs a complete team effort

essendondfl.com.au | THE FOOTBALLER

MEN’S PGWEEKEND OUTLOOK defensively to ensure any one of their star forwards don't get off the chain. Districts midfielder Riley Bentley is also one to watch after another prolific campaign averaging 38 disposals, nine score involvements, and 150 ranking points per game. Daniel Micevski has been super dangerous all year for the Roys, particularly around goal, going at an average of four goal involvements and eight score involvements per game across the season. The season is on the line as Hadfield takes on Westmeadows at Joe Brown Oval on Sunday. Hadfield returns to finals footy for the first time in 11 years, while Westmeadows is on the hunt for a third consecutive grand final appearance. The Hawks enter this clash with five wins in a row enabling the side to finish third, their finals spot locked in with a week to spare. The Tigers only just scraped in with a win in the final round, although it was a comprehensive 79-point win over Sunbury Kangaroos.

THE FOOTBALLER | essendondfl.com.au

Hadfield has enjoyed wins in both contests with Westmeadows this year, the first a 65point win that kickstarted the side's march to finals. The second contest was a much scrappier affair with 84 points scored in total, the Hawks 16 points ahead come full time. Sam Godden and Jake Polizzi found plenty of the ball on both occasions, likewise Jordan Kosteas in the yellow and black. Across both meetings, however, both sides have been missing players and will likely have different looking lineups come Sunday. Shaun O'Grady missed earlier in the year, while Mohammed Moustafa was injured early in the same contest. Both managed a goal second time around. Tigers co-captain Ryan Capron led all comers in the last contest with 42 disposals but will miss this clash, while Jack Dodorico was strong for Hadfield but hasn't qualified. Westmeadows will look to curtail Hadfield's kick-mark game, while Hadfield will look to shut down the Tigers runners.
