Bua na Cainte fully embraces and meets the requirements of Gaeilge for oral language, reading and writing in the New Primary Language Curriculum and enables teachers to implement it in a practical manner in their classrooms.

The interactive Bua na Cainte programme stimulates the children’s interest in language learning and now include the seasons in new subthemes.

Comhráite le Beochan

There is an animated conversation for each lesson where the children watch and listen to characters conversing through Irish in exciting and interesting settings on topics that are of interest to pupils and that relate to their experiences.

The language throughout the programme is graded carefully and systematically from Bua na Cainte A Nua right through to Bua na Cainte 6

It enables children to achieve the learning outcomes of the Primary Language Curriculum for Oral Language, Reading and Writing

Amhráin, Rainn agus Dánta le Beochan

Each theme features an extensive range of stimulating and lively songs, rhymes and poems to teach Gaeilge to children in an enjoyable way. Characters perform the songs on-screen, with actions, making the whole experience more interactive. The teacher can control whether or not the text of the song or poem appears on-screen and can also control the text line-by-line, forwards and backwards.

Scéalta le Beochan

Each level of Bua na Cainte features a wide range of stimulating animated stories, incorporating new and traditional tales that appeal to children of all ages. The teacher can control whether or not the text of the story appears on-screen and there is also provision for manipulating the text line-by-line, forwards and backwards.

Bua na Cainte A and B Nua: each level contains 13 animated stories

Bua na Cainte 1 Nua and 2: each level contains 11 animated stories

Bua na Cainte 3 and 4: contain 12 animated stories

Bua na Cainte 5: contains 13 animated stories contains 12 animated stories

Tascanna Éisteachta, Tuisceana agus Cluichí

Bua na Cainte A and B Nua have a wide range of new attractive games to motivate students to learn Irish in a fun way. Interactive games enable teachers to consolidate the content, with over 65 new games added.

Bua na Cainte 1 Nua has a new game Fuaimeanna. Both Bua na Cainte 1 Nua and Bua na Cainte 2 include the following games: Bí ag Léamh, Bí ag Scríobh, Faigh an Abairt, Feicim le Mo Shúilín, Faigh an Focal, Líon na Bearnaí, Cuir na Pictiúir in Ord. Bua na Cainte 2 also has a Litriú section which presents spelling activities in an engaging and innovative way.

Bua na Cainte 3 and 4 have a wide variety of new and attractive games to facilitate many different learning styles. These include Líon na Bearnaí, Bí ag Caint, Tasc Tuisceana, Scríobh na hAbairtí, Suimeanna Focal, Spraoi le Briathra and Freagair na Ceisteanna, along with other games such as Biongó, Cén t-am é?, Cluiche Kim, Bí ag Scríobh, Bí ag Léamh, Cuir na Pictiúir in Ord, Foclóir and Scríobh an Scéal.

Many of these games can be played at different levels to facilitate differentiation. The Bí ag Caint game gives the opportunity to record and replay the pupils’ responses

Bua na Cainte 5 and 6 contain additional new games to those in Bua na Cainte 3 and 4 including Ar Thóir an Óir, Crosfhocal and Tóirfhocal.

Bua na Cainte A, B & 1 Nua Printed Teacher Resources –enable teachers to engage children actively in language learning with hundreds of new printed resources added.

In the Interactive Learning Environment, teachers are given library of resources which provide plenty of opportunity to design differentiated activities.

Teachers can design their own lessons to meet the needs of a particular class. There is a variety of features in this section which include a library of pictures, a choice of backgrounds, and the unique feature of access to all the pictures and backgrounds of the other themes.

The options vary for the different class levels. For example, Bua na Cainte A and B Nua have the option of colouring in the characters, Bua na Cainte 1 Nua and 2 have a section on the letters while Bua na Cainte 3, 4, 5 and 6 have a save button which allows teachers to save their lessons. The Clár Bán section contains many features including:

l Inserting text on-screen

l Writing/Drawing on-screen

l Spotlighting

l Erasing.

For every lesson, story, song and activity in Bua na Cainte there is a link to a corresponding Teacher’s Help page where all the language is provided for the teacher. In addition, there is a complete set of curriculum-focused lesson plans for each lesson comprising language functions and corresponding language exemplars along with the strands and elements – oral language, reading and writing. Each lesson note contains a variety of teaching methodologies for each phase of the lesson:

These notes are presented in a clear and logical manner with suggestions for the informal use of Irish throughout the school day and suggestions are provided also for Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).

Bua na Cainte A, B & 1 Nua –fully editable Teacher’s Help text files are supplied for all activities and new subtitle text, with on/off button functionality, is now available in the animations.

Formative assessment is an integral part of the Bua na Cainte programme. Every theme features a task to revise and assess the content of the theme.

For example in Bua na Cainte 6 the learning outcomes for oral language, reading and writing are assessed.

Pupil Books

The Pupil Books are bright and colourful and feature the same characters as the Interactive Resources. They:

l Play an important role in the series

l Reinforce the material covered with the interactive resources

l Encourage children to practise using Irish

l Revise and consolidate the language taught.

In the Bua na Cainte A & B Nua Pupil Books the language taught is outlined clearly on each page, so that parents/guardians can help the children to practise speaking Irish at home.

Teacher’s Resource Books

Then Bua na Cainte Pupil Book plays a key role in the pupil’s language learning. The book comprises a variety of exciting and challenging educational activities that support and complement the interactive resources. Combined with the interactive resources, these activities enhance the pupil’s comprehension, oral language, reading, writing and language awareness skills in an integrated manner, and assist the pupils to achieve their learning outcomes.

Bua na Cainte Leabhar Litrithe is a comprehensive spelling, phonics and grammar programme and develops the children’s phonological and phonemic awareness. The spelling programme is integrated with other components of the Bua na Cainte programme. The activities are designed so that children can learn in an enjoyable and structured way and achieve the desired learning outcomes.

Bua na Cainte is fully in line with the Primary Language Curriculum for Gaeilge and now has the most up-to-date and comprehensive short- and long-term planning documents available to enable you to implement the Curriculum in the classroom.

The documents are all available in our updated Teacher’s Resource Books and online, in editable format, on edcolearning.ie

The lesson notes provide the language exemplars, and associated language functions, along with a wide variety of suggested teaching methodologies and strategies.

There are suggestions for assessment for learning at the end of each lesson and the end of each theme to help you to assess the pupils’ learning outcomes. Practical examples for Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) along with suggestions for the informal use of Irish throughout the school day are provided. Suggestions for integration with other subject areas are also included.
