Flood disaster highlights govt failures

Floods prompt land use rethink

Hans Lovejoy

Residents, community group representatives and a few councillors packed out the Mullum Ex-Services Club on Monday to provide personal stories, ask questions and offer solutions to the devastating floods that hit the Shire’s north on Feburary 28. It was one of the community meetings being chaired by the Independent Flood Inquiry, which is led by Professor Mary O’Kane and former Police Commissioner, Michael Fuller. Both attended the forum. Common themes that emerged during the forum included the lack of a disaster plan by Council, the lack of drainage maintanence, the exorbitant cost of flood insurance and the bureau of meteorology (BoM) not providing accurate information in the lead-up to the flood. Failings within the initial emergency response by all levels of government and emergency services were also highlighted, which resulted in a community-led response to the disaster for up to five days after Feburary 28. The NSW government website for flood grants was also criticised as being inadequate, and there was a call to dredge creeks and reopen intermittently closed and open lakes or lagoons (ICOLLs). The meeting heard of residents still living in mouldy homes and others still cut off by landslips in the valleys behind Mullumbimby, three months after. Byron Bay fire brigade Captain, John Riley, said that Council lacked a disaster plan, something which is standard with other councils across the nation. Such a plan, he said, would trigger emergency

A rethink of how and where we build in the Shire is on the cards, with Byron Council staff proposing that a detailed discussion paper explore these and other floodrelated issues. After a similar exploration in Lismore, Byron Council staff are proposing that a paper be prepared titled After the 2022 Floods: Working out Possibilities Together. Councillors will vote on whether or not to proceed with the paper at this week’s Council planning meeting.

Photo Jeff ‘High Flood Mark’ Dawson services into action. Another failing, highlighted by another emergency responder, was that emergency service communications are reliant on Telstra. When a North Coast Telstra tower was knocked out of action from the floods, the entire region was without a Telstra service for at least a week, hampering rescue efforts. One SES member, who said they were still traumatised by the experience, acknowledged the response was inadequate but said, ‘we tried our best’.

Community-led response One of the team leaders with the initial community-led responders, Ella Rose Goninan, said that for four to five days after the flood,

hundreds of spontaneous volunteers stood up in the absence of emergency services and continued to do so for weeks after. Prior to the flood, Ella told the gathering, from her long-term work with HHUG, Renew Fest, and previously with Resilient Byron, she had relevant contacts in her phone so she could help straight away. She described those first days of life saving rescues, door-knocking residents, organising hundreds of clean-up teams, receiving and distributing thousands of donated goods, sending medical, food and emergency supplies to isolated valleys, and establishing communications owing to no Telstra connection. Ella also said that the community group were forced to move from the

Civic Hall by Resilience NSW and Council with only 24 hours’ notice. This was despite her group still operating full time, while little government support was offered. Ms Goninan acknowledged robust exchanges throughout that period, and said despite trying to find a solution, she felt she was, ‘Now under attack’. ‘There was little leadership or support throughout. On three separate occasions I requested mediation from the Mayor [Michael Lyon] and Council’s then recovery officer, as we were needing help with the understandable stakeholder challenges that were happening inside such extreme circumstances. These requests were not met’. ▶ Continued on page 2

Now’s the time for those reforms, says former MLC Richard Jones ▶ p8

In her report on the issue, Council’s Director of Sustainable Environment and Economy, Shannon Burt, said there was a need to review the Council’s settlement strategies on the back of the floods and respond to the ‘wider consideration of climate change and natural disaster management’. ‘To assist these strategy reviews and complement other work plans and programs for Council, it is now proposed to prepare a high-level discussion paper to set out a framework for land use and planning response to the flood events and identify principles/ actions that could apply across the strategies, plans and programs more broadly as a result.’ Ms Burt proposed that the discussion paper should consider how the Shire could ‘build back better’ – rebuilding in a way that was more resilient to future floods and new ▶ Continued on page 3

The NSW government will pay the rates of floodaffected ratepayers in Byron Lismore, Ballina, Richmond Valley, and Clarence Valley local government areas for 2022–2023. According to Lismore MP Janelle Saffin, the scheme will cover the residential,

commercial and farm rates of eligible ratepayers for one year. She said, ‘The funding will be provided through Service NSW and the payments will be made directly to councils’. ‘The NSW Government will contact eligible

ratepayers in the affected LGAs to inform them it will be paying their rates for next year on their behalf’. ‘The issue of having to pay rates for homes or businesses which currently cannot be lived in or worked from, was raised at the Select Committee’s hearings

in Lismore earlier this week,’ Ms Saffin said. ‘It will be good to have a funding package which will provide relief to eligible ratepayers and will not disadvantage local councils which rely on rate revenue to provide services,’ Ms Saffin added.

!ōƖćƆ ƖŕĶƐĕ Ɛş şǔĕſ Ŕşſĕ ǖşşĎ ƆƖżżşſƐ Two longstanding community groups in Mullumbimby are collaborating to support flood-affected people and businesses across the Brunswick Valley. The local chapters of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) and Rotary are working in partnership to distribute $20,000 from the CWA’s NSW Disaster Fund. Residents living in the postcode areas of 2482 and 2483 who were affected by the floods are eligible to

apply for grants of $500. They can do so by visiting the CWA’s newlyminted website: www.cwamullumbimby.wordpress.com. Applications for this round of grants will close on July 15, 2022.

ƖżżşſƐƆ ōşĈëō ćĶǀ The President of the Mullumbimby CWA Diane Giddins said the branch was aware that many people were still traumatised from the floods and in need of support.

‘As a gesture to show we care, we gave more than 100 vouchers for local businesses to flood-affected people, which also helps to keep the businesses going,’ Ms Giddins said. ‘Immediately after the floods, we gave cooked meals to the Neighbourhood Centre for distribution and made hundreds of sandwiches for the volunteers. ‘We are pleased to work with Rotary Mullumbimby with the funds we have

obtained from the Disaster Fund, and urge Brunswick Valley people in need to apply.’ Rosetta Smiriglia, the President of Mullumbimby Rotary said her club had given away more than $35,000 in small grants, $1000 in gift vouchers and held several free community barbeques. She said the club would continue to support the community as it rebuilt and recovered from the floods.

DōşşĎ ĎĶƆëƆƐĕſ IJĶīIJōĶīIJƐƆ īşưƐ ĪëĶōƖſĕƆ ▶ Continued from page 1 Sasha Mainsbridge, founder of Mullum Cares, expressed a similar experience with a lack of councillor response or interest after she approached them wanting to get the word out on how to treat mould and rebuild for future floods. Ms Mainsbridge added that SES members should be paid, which was met by applause. She said, ‘What do we value if we don’t pay these people? The evacuation warning wasn’t adequate. What has been done? I’ve reached out to councillors regarding rebuilding after floods. I’ve

heard nothing back’. Francesca Esposito, representing the North Byron District Activation Community Flood Response group, told the panel that the system is broken, both in terms of insurance and the government response. ‘People are falling through the cracks’, she said, ‘and the criteria for grants is too strict. You need five forms of ID to get the grants. This doesn’t acknowledge that most people lost everything. I lost everything’. She added she had no confidence in the system

and asked whether the State government is investing in clearing drains. An elderly Mullumbimby resident from Ann Street said that this was this was her third flood. She said that 13 years ago, Council regularly cleaned out the drains; however, when she asked recently why they aren’t being maintained, she was told by Council staff they couldn’t clean some drains owing to them being on private property. It was later established at the meeting that it was Crown land. Mullum resident, Len

Bates, said that insurance claims will only pay for the house to be restored to preflood condition. He said, ‘We need to raise houses, yet there’s only one local house-raising company, which is located in Kingscliff’. Tenancy rights were also discussed, with one resident saying tenancy agreements become void after a natural disaster, which ‘displaced families who are vulnerable’. There was a general feeling throughout the meeting that Council needs more funding from State and federal governments. www.echo.net.au

Building back The paper would also explore building back differently, meaning a rethink of planning and building controls such as height, density and materials. It would also examine different locations for future development such as new greenfield areas that could support local housing and business needs in an

uncertain future. Ms Burt proposed that the paper be prepared and presented to Council in the second half of the year so that it could be synchronised with the release of the North Coast Regional Plan and the latest Census data. The report would also include a community engagement program to ensure that locals had a say on any proposed changes to building and development in the Shire. Additionally, the Rural Land Use Strategy, a

document adopted five years ago to guide rural land usage, is up for an ‘Action Audit’. According to the report in this week’s agenda by Council planner, Sam Tarrant, the ‘regional plan and settlement planning guidelines are used to form Local Growth Management Strategies (LGMS). Council has three LGMS - Rural Land Use Strategy (RLUS), Business and Industrial Lands Strategy (BILS) and a draft Residential Strategy’. Staff are asking to be given the powers to ‘prioritise

delivery of Rural Land Use Strategy Action 21 in the 2022-23 financial year, being: Investigate capacity for re-subdivision within existing Large Lot Residential estates’.

Rural land options They requested ‘the preparation of an options paper on the potential for additional land to be nominated for rural lifestyle living opportunities and/or other emerging housing types in peri-urban areas e.g. villages as part of the 2022-23 work program’.

It’s so exciting. It’s a new direction!’ Fit to burst, these words spill out of Justine Elliot MP almost before she’s said hello. As the local member of federal parliament since she defeated the National Party’s Larry Anthony in 2004, Elliot is a veteran of sitting in the House of Reps, but not so much in government. After last week’s caucus meeting, she is now also the Assistant Minister for Social Services and the Assistant Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence. Mrs Elliot said it was almost overwhelming. ‘Being in Canberra when we had the caucus meeting and when the Prime Minister came in – and with all the new people, there was just

Justine Elliot. Photo ALP such a sense of enthusiasm and excitement about all the great things we can do for the country. And I have the honour of being an Assistant Minister. ‘I am really humbled and privileged that the Prime Minister appointed me to the role. ‘Getting sworn in

– everyone was just so keen to get started. You can really feel the excitement of people.’ Mrs Elliot said the country will definitely be going in a different direction than it’s been travelling for the past nine years. ‘There’s the outlook of the Prime Minister – the language that he uses and the way he genuinely feels, and how he acts while being so inclusive. He’s taking the people with us. It’s such a contrast to the previous government – demonising different groups and really polarising. He’s talking about all of us moving forward and being supportive of one another. It’s so positive, and I think people are just so relieved that the Morrison government is gone.’ Mrs Elliot says she hasn’t had a chance to rest since

the election, with people across the region wanting to talk about a whole range of issues. ‘I hit the ground running’, she said. ‘We have a series of election commitments – we are very keen to get those rolled out once everything’s established’. Mrs Elliot said she would be in meetings over the next few weeks to work out what her specific roles will be. ‘I have a huge interest in all of those areas, particularly with Social Services and the Prevention of Family Violence. ‘For Social Services, getting rid of the cashless debit card is just incredible. That card destroys people’s lives, and the prevention of family violence, this is an issue that I’ve always been really committed to.’ She also said that even though she enjoys

campaigning, she’s glad it’s over. ‘It is absolutely tireing work, but it’s very important’.

!şŕƐĕƆƐ şĪ ĶĎĕëƆ ‘We’re talking about a contest of ideas, talking about changing the government and it is relentless. That’s something I’ve acknowledged in all the other candidates who ran, and their time and commitment. That’s the good thing about living in a democracy like we do. ‘We had ten candidates from a whole range of parties and issues and everybody was out there, putting forward their views. That’s the system we have, which is great.’ With the federal ICAC being one of the major issues in 2022, the question on many people’s lips is: when? ‘Anthony Albanese has said that we will have the

legislation introduced by the end of the year, he made that commitment during the election.’ Elliot said there is so much to do. On the day we spoke, she was dealing with some local issues. ‘I’m chasing up a few things – individuals and housing concerns, and then also working with Amanda Rishworth, the senior Minister for Social Services, to have an initial discussion about what exactly will be in my portfolio and what areas I’ll be focusing on – it’s just go, go, go! ‘You can’t waste any day in government!’ And what would Mungo MacCallum have said about Labor being back in government? ‘I reckon he’d say: “We can send the white smoke up the chimney now”.’

Cr Dey said he had been asked to undertake the works by residents of the area who said inadequate and poorly maintained drainage infrastructure had contributed to the damage done during the February floods. ‘Some of the actions could be implemented early and rapidly,’ Cr Dey said in his written notice of motion. ‘Many should already be budgeted

‘Others mesh with projects articulated in the North Byron Shire Floodplain Plan as adopted in 2020. Still others may be seen as new and thus require allocation in Council’s budget.’ Cr Dey’s motion follows claims by residents, reported in last week’s Echo, that basic infrastructure in the north of the Shire had been suffering from longterm neglect. Despite having 30 per cent of the Shire’s housing, the north of the Shire reportedly receives a disproportionately low slice of the infrastructure funding pie. Sewerage pipes and drains are

ing uncleared for 15 years. Among the key works being requested by Cr Dey is inspection and maintenance of the flood gates in South Golden Beach including reinstalling seals on gates and removing mud accumulated on the concrete apron downstream. Cr Dey will also ask for the recommencement and completion of the backyard easement project that began back in 2015. He will also seek an investigation into whether South Golden Beach, west of Capricornia Canal, could benefit from a flood pump system similar to the one servicing the east side.

Tradies and insurance assessors are invited to attend a free event to learn about residential rebuilding, post-flood, at the Mullum Leagues Club on June 16 from 5 till 8pm. Co-organiser, Sasha Mainsbridge, Byron Shire Residential Flood Adaptation Project Manager, Mullum Cares Inc, says James Davidson from JDA Co. and guests ‘will share their experience rebuilding flood-resilient in Qld over the last decade’.

‘They understand the role of insurers, and the challenges faced by trades trying to help property owners rebuild more flood-resilient. Bruns Visitor Centre faces crossroads Youth Theatre tackles consent The Brunswick Heads Visitor Centre (VC), like most small businesses, experienced long-lasting impacts after two years of COVID-19. Kim Rosen, VC Co-ordinator says, ‘The JobKeeper and JobMaker assistance saw the non-profit organisation make it through 2020 and 2021 financially. But our volunteer teams and our community events, activities and fundraisers were decimated’. Undeterred, she says the team started this year optimistically, all set to throw everything into making a full recovery by the end of 2023. ‘However, the storm and flood events in February and March kiboshed our many planned initiatives to counter the loss of volunteers and cancellation of our events and activities,’ said Ms Rosen. ‘The Mullum2Bruns Paddle, one of the VC’s key annual fundraisers, had to be cancelled because of water safety and the anticipated $12K fundraising income will be very difficult to recoup.’ ‘So we are counting on a big turnout at Old & Gold on Saturday June 11 to support our fundraising fair, food stall and book stall,’ she said.

‘The Vintage and Collectables Fair at the Memorial Hall from 8.30am–4pm, organised by the VC as a fundraiser, will offer a fabulous collection of beautiful old wares and vintage paraphernalia. ‘The VC is also offering festivalgoers a great range of scrumptious cakes, frittatas and soup at the food stall directly outside the Hall. Also in the fundraising theme, they will run their mega book sale on Saturday at the VC with good-read novels (the VC speciality) from only $1. ‘The Visitor Centre is actually so short of volunteers that it may have to close one or two days per week’. Volunteers Co-ordinator, Melinda Bennett, is desperately seeking new volunteers to join the team for a rewarding experience as a part of the village community. ‘Anyone looking for a new direction after the lockdown and floods who can spare four hours per week, is welcome to pop along to the VC food stall on Saturday for a chat with our friendly team,’ said Melinda. ‘Alternatively, please call on 6685 1003 or drop in to 7 Park St, especially if you have some local knowledge,

and enjoy meeting and chatting with people.’ Ms Rosen said, ‘We are appealing to locals to come into the Visitor Centre and check out the excellent range of Brunswick Heads and Simple Pleasures themed mementos and gifts, plus historical books, nostalgic Dr Suess products and retro posters, plus the best assortment of maps and brochures in the area. Everything is 20 per cent off on Saturday 11 June.’ The VC also has a small office space to rent with 24/7 access at an affordable rate including electricity and internet. ‘If you need a small space and would like to support the VC in this way, please contact me on 0412 316299 or kimsrosen@gmail.com,’ she said. The centre is currently supported by the Hotel Brunswick, Crystal Castle, Falls Festival and Byron Bay Eco-Cruises and is also looking for assistance from a couple of additional corporate sponsors. According to Ms Rosen, the Brunswick Heads Visitor Centre is facing a crossroads. ‘The momentum is starting to pick up now, but the hardworking team really needs the community’s support to get the VC back on its feet by the end of the year’.

assault. ‘BYT are well known for their honest and open exploration of important issues and provide an excellent opportunity for parents, caregivers, teachers and youth-related organisations to engage young people in meaningful conversations on the topics raised’. ‘Loves Me Loves Me Not follows several different

relationships that intertwine and gives a powerful platform for both young people and adults to express their hopes, fears, confusion and deep longing about how we develop meaningful connection with one another. It includes live music, choreographed dance and dramatic scenes’. Tickets are available from www.brunswickpicturehouse.com.

Now’s the time for those reforms

Which Council services could see an increase? ICYMI, Council staff have crafted a draft budget, and it’s on exhibition! If it’s approved, without any tinkering by our well informed and good looking councillor majority, it will see waste removal rates raised by around 17 per cent. Also, the cost for amending a large development approval (DA) could also see a large increases of up to 300 per cent, depending on what stage the DA is at and what type it is. A quick glance at the fees and charges document demonstrates how governed Australian society is. From sending your child to a Council-run After School and Vacation Care Facility (those fees would rise under this budget), to being buried at a Council-run cemetery (those fees are also set to rise around 3.5 per cent), there are a lot of fees and charges in-between. Renting a holiday cabin at First Sun Holiday Park would cost only a little more under this proposal, while pay parking in the bay would rise a modest $1 to $5 per hour. Justification for the increase in waste disposal (page 7) is owing to ‘external costs such as the Qld waste levy, transport (fuel) and organics processing’. On page 77, all of the services and costs of the Byron Resource Recovery Centre are tabled, with the cost to dispose green waste, recyclables, metal and tyres and gassed appliances like fridges and aircon units set to rise. The biggest hike proposals in the draft budget appear to be for amending a large development application (DA). That info is found on page 109. The cost for, ‘Minor Amendment (Single site and not requiring specialist review of supporting studies) – Stage 2 Pre-Gateway’ would rise from $4,000 to $13,000 (225 per cent). A ‘Minor Amendment (Single site and not requiring specialist review of supporting studies) – Stage 3 Post-Gateway’ would rise from $2,000 to $7,000 (250 per cent). A ‘Major Amendment (Multiple sites and/or requiring specialist review of supporting studies) – Stage 1 Pre-lodgement Meeting and Report’ would rise from $7,000 to $10,000 (42.86 per cent). A ‘Major Amendment (Multiple sites and/or requiring specialist review of supporting studies) – Stage 2 Pre-Gateway would rise from $10,000 to $35,000 (250 per cent). And a ‘Major Amendment (Multiple sites and/or requiring specialist review of supporting studies) – Stage 3 Post-Gateway’ would rise from $5,000 to $20,000 (300 per cent). Submitting a DA ‘not involving the erection of a building, carrying out of work or subdivision of land’ would rise from $285 to $333, while a DA ‘consisting of the erection of a dwelling house when estimated cost of construction is $100,000 or less’ will rise from $455 to $532. The cost of ‘Erection of a building or other works with estimated cost up to $5,000’ remains $110. The good news is that hall hire and sports ground use is not pegged for an increase, although costs for some Cavanbah Centre activities will rise. The fees and charges document can be found within the five documents of the Draft Delivery Program 2022–26 and Operational Plan 2022–23. They are available on Council’s website: www.yoursaybyronshire.com.au/dpop. Feedback is open until June 10. Hans Lovejoy, editor

ust over two weeks ago we had a revolution, finally. It’s difficult to overestimate the change that took place. It was effectively the end of an era. The result was so bad for the Liberals, who lost nearly a third of their seats, including some of their safest, that they may never recover, despite Murdoch’s undying support. There was a massive swing to Independents and Greens, and a major gender and diversity rebalancing. Neoliberalism and the discredited belief that tax cuts for rich individuals and corporations will lead to greater job creation and wealth ‘trickling down’ to the poor has been exposed as a cruel fraud. The wealth gap is now almost as big as in medieval times. Globalisation is in the process of falling apart. Australia is dangerously exposed to reliance on the goodwill of other countries. Ninety per cent of our fuel is now imported, and current stocks would only last an estimated 32 days. The war in Ukraine has disrupted gas, oil and food supplies. China’s zero covid policy has caused disruptions to manufacturers. Add the climate crisis to the mix, with its unpredictable catastrophes, and it doesn’t take a genius to work out that we need to change systems and habits urgently. Anthony Albanese and his government have the power to make any progressive changes that are needed. They have the majority in the House of Representatives and can pass any progressive legislation they want in the Senate with the support of the Greens and Senator David Pocock. What Albo and his team absolutely need to realise is – the campaign is over. They won. They don’t need to worry about losing the support of this lobby or that. They have the numbers to do whatever they want – and to make radical reforms. New governments like to introduce the most controversial changes

‘It’s time to raise the income threshold where people start paying tax. Currently, żĕşżōĕ şŕ ƱëīĕƆ ĪſşŔ ȧǧǮǼǨǦǦ ë Ʒĕëſ ëſĕ ƆōƖīīĕĎ ǧǯĈ Ķŕ ƐIJĕ Ďşōōëſȁ `şć ĕĕŊĕſ ëōƆş ŕĕĕĎƆ Ɛş ćĕ ĶŕĈſĕëƆĕĎ ƆƖćƆƐëŕƐĶëōōƷțȁ

Richard Jones very quickly after taking office in the hope the public will come to accept them as normal by the time the next election comes around. There need to be major reforms in the taxation system to reverse the regressive changes made since the Howard era. The legislated tax cuts that Labor said they wouldn’t repeal will cost Treasury $20 billion a year. A third of the benefit of these cuts will flow to the top ten per cent, as is neoliberal tradition. Assuming Labor will stick to their promise and not repeal the legislation, that doesn’t stop them deferring the cuts and saving $20 billion a year for a while. Accounting experts, KPMG, estimate the tax concession on superannuation is costing $50 billion a year. The discount on capital gains costs around $10 billon annually, and federal subsidies for private health and education is around $20 billion. We’re starting to talk about real money. Assuming Labor won’t go the whole hog, in a manner of speaking, surely they could claw back half of this $100 billion a year? On the other side of the ledger, it’s time to raise the income threshold where people start paying tax. Currently, people on wages from $18,200 a year are slugged 19c in the dollar. JobSeeker also needs to be increased substantially. Our local Member, Justine Elliot, could make a submission to the Expenditure Review Committee of the Department of Finance along these lines, naturally after having consulted Treasurer, Jim Chalmers. In fact, each one of us could do that. So, imagining that these changes have been made and we’ve now fixed the cashflow problem; where shall we spend it? We know who needs urgent

financial assistance: Those people devastated by the floods who have lost everything and are still homeless in northern NSW and southern Qld. Make no mistake, billions need to be allocated. We visited a friend near the end of Left Bank Road, Mullumbimby the other day and were shocked to see the impacts of the incredible flooding. Giant boulders strewn around like billiard balls, empty house after empty house standing like ghosts. We were told sixteen out of twenty houses nearby were still uninhabitable. We’ve visited Lismore several times and on each occasion it has been traumatic. We can barely imagine what it’s like for those who have lost everything. The Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation comes into effect on 1 July.

Buy back properties The State government will need considerable assistance from the federal government to buy back properties and rebuild others. It can’t be done on a shoestring. Anthony Albanese was brought up by a single mother on a disability pension in a Housing Commission home. Who doesn’t know that by now? He’s on the left. Now he needs to govern as a leftie, and help those thousands, millions even, who require help. We don’t want a Liberal Lite Government. This is not a time to be pusillanimous. It’s a time for bold and radical reforms. Q Richard Jones is a former NSW MLC and is now a cermacist.

Letters Back in the day I remember back in the day when Council workers used to actually don raincoats and clear the drains when it was raining. Ron Hannigan and his men, wet weather gear on, or not, shovels in hand physically cleared drains while it was wet and they could see where the problems were. Not only in the dry times, nor in floods, but all year round, year after year. Ah, back in the day. Annette Snow Myocum

could further diminish the character of Byron. This is the ‘Tweedification’ of Byron. So many beautiful old homes are being demolished and replaced by units or townhouses, many of which appear to be shoddily built for quick profit and have very few environmentally positive features in their design. I don’t know if Council has the power to designate particular houses as heritage, it’s a great pity if it doesn’t. David Gilet Byron Bay

New drug war

Madness

The Attorney-General of NSW, Mark Speakman, just suggested a $400 fine for personal drug use. You can be fined twice before being taken to court or joining a health treatment program. It appears to me like a stupid and rushed suggestion, a much-delayed reaction to the big ‘Special Commission Of Inquiry Into The Drug Ice’, which handed down 109 recommendations in 2020, over two years ago. The Inquiry cost $10.85 million and again we see that the NSW government is stuck on the path of penalties and imprisonment. There are millions of illicit drug users in this State, most of them are over twenty-five and are functioning members of society. It appears to me that our politicians believe we are all just misguided and we should all start drinking the legal, most destructive drug for body and society – alcohol. As most will remember, Gladys Berejiklian closed the door on pill testing at no cost to the taxpayer, and sent more police to festivals, which didn’t stop the deaths,

After yet another enormously tragic mass murder in America I heard on the radio that an NRA member believes that God gives him the right to self-defence and the Second Amendment gives him the right to bear arms with immense killing power far beyond anything available when the Second Amendment came about. And so, he argues, the availability of guns isn’t a problem; mental illness is the problem. But aren’t such irrational beliefs part of America’s mental illness? President G W Bush said that he attacked Iraq because God told him to do so! Catastrophe followed. When will this madness stop? Maybe when miniature nuclear arms become available over the counter and people take advantage of God’s authority and the Second Amendment, then that will be the end of America and so the end of the madness. John Jennings Numinbah

Cartoon by Alister Lockhart – www.alisterlockhart.net and brought the criminal strip searches of minors by police to the public’s attention. Fifty-one years since the beginning of the war on drugs, billions of dollars wasted, millions of lives destroyed and we’re letting these politicians keep on doing it? Look at Portugal and other countries and how they’ve changed successfully. We needed a second drug summit years ago, but in the end it’s the police commissioner who decides what the main focus should be. How crazy that you can now grow your own cannabis in the ACT legally. As the Nimbin Hemp Embassy has been saying for over thirty years, the law is the crime!

Michael Kirby, Dr Alex Wodak, Dr Annie Madden AO and others will be discussing this on 23 June in Sydney, check out drugpolicy.org.au and watch it live. Let’s start saving lives and stop criminalising! Chibo Mertineit Lillian Rock Q Related article on page 14.

Victory Congratulations must go to Justine Elliott for being re-elected as our member for Richmond and being promoted to assistant Minister for Social Services and Family Violence in the newly elected Labor government. She also received more primary votes than any other candidate in a very hotly contested election. Congratulations to the whole Labor team who worked tirelessly to ensure Richmond voters did not waste their votes on candidates with populist undeliverable policies, and will continue to have an experienced, progressive hardworking federal MP. An MP who will actually be in government and enact achievable, sensible climate change policy. Keith Duncan Pimlico

Opinion Moral compass and the former PM

Meme by Jeff ‘Pomme de Terred’ Dawson Frank Lynch

from covid until adequately vaccinated.

s I reflect on the Morrison government I wonder how it was okay for the former Prime Minister, who fervently professes faith in his God, to treat with such disdain so many people for so long. In the early days of COVID19, it appeared he was being guided by a superior force, even if in fact it was the chief health officers showing the way. I give him credit for his initial response of putting protections in place quickly, though not without problems. There was ability and leadership in bringing the premiers and health advisors together in a National Cabinet at the time, almost as though the consensus approach of National Cabinet was potentially a new dawn in government.

What minster for aged care?

A

Double-speak But the cracks soon appeared. His double-speak on having Commonwealth vaccination mandates for certain workers while supporting protests against vaccination mandates and lockdowns in Victoria was a twisted attempt to drive a wedge between the Victorian premier and Victorians. Morrison supported Clive Palmer’s challenge to WA lockdowns, though West Australians seemed more than happy about being spared www.echo.net.au

Meanwhile the Commonwealth-managed aged care homes were a disaster zone for lives lost from covid, and his minister for aged care was hard to find. There was pressure on states to open borders before populations were adequately vaccinated. Yet he was quick to take credit for the low death rate from covid compared to other developed countries, when in fact it was largely because the states were following health advice despite pressure from the Commonwealth – and because the health workers were assiduously working to protect us. Were we supposed to sympathise with him in what appeared to be his resignation speech – in the company of his pastor and congregation – when he characterised it in terms of ‘we are all here to serve; …the policeman, the teacher, the pastor, and the PM’ and ‘it is the most appropriate place for me to make this speech’. As though he was faithfully serving the cause with the blessing of his particular God.

real integrity to a parliament lacking moral direction? How could his government continue to splurge money on his favoured electorates? Isn’t Reconciliation worthy of constitutional change for the benefit of all of us and especially for Indigenous Australians? Why was he so late in acknowledging climate change, even though a large part of the Liberal heartland were convinced? Why use the difficult issues relating to transgender kids in a political way? How is it that he believed it okay to coerce strangers in the street into shaking his hand?

Is there anything more manipulative than, in his last breath, releasing information about the interception of a Suspected Illegal Entry Vessel (SIEV), when for years he classified those events as ‘operational’ and not for comment? So, on all these character aspects, was there any shred of credibility? Or was it all a case of ‘whatever it takes?’ He probably would claim his religion as his ‘moral compass’, but his course was constantly suffering deviation, and eventually he finished on the rocks.

Q The Northern Regional Planning Panel (NRPP) has approved a Bioenergy facility that will cost $16.5 million. This cost may well blow out, as building costs generally do over time. It will only provide half of Council’s electricity consumption, electricity that is already sourced from green energy: 60 per cent wind and 40 per cent offset. How many years will it take to pay off this facility? The majority of residents don’t want it, for good reasons. Why is Council pushing this onto us? Another legacy from Simon Richardson! In 2017 Council raised the residential rates by 33.5 per cent over four years. According to Mayor Richardson’s statement in the Northern Star (9.5.17) the rate rise would raise $11.72m and ‘will be allocated to reducing the Council’s infrastructure backlog and improving financial sustainability’. It appears that the Council’s finances will be severely challenged by the cost of the Bioenergy facility, $16.5m+. Who will be paying for this facility? Is this cost sustainable? Council is about to raise the waste removal rates by

Israel and Australia have both signed and ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), Article 37 of which states that, ‘Children who break the law should not be treated cruelly. They should not be put in a prison with adults and should be able to keep in contact with their family’.

Q I think we need to send Council’s relationship with local health food shops to

ICAC. I think perhaps the real reason behind the gas-fired electricity Bioenergy facility may be a secret deal to increase sales of Santos and Fundies’ Rescue Remedy and calming smudge sticks. Council is now confusingly seeking submissions on increasing waste charges by 17 per cent, which the GM advises ‘is to cover the costs of sending green waste to the Queensland tip’, but at the same time is progressing NOT to send waste to Qld, and instead use it in Byron Bay to ferment methane for the ‘Bioenergy gas-fired electricity Plant’, i.e progressing increased charges for costs while progressing eliminating those same costs. The GM has not answered how the private development application (DA) for the Bioenergy facility appears to have been prepared for, and presumably paid for, by the $10m plant suppliers, despite it being a Council project on Council’s land – Council should have paid for the DA report. Is this a ‘kickback’ from the supplier to Council, to sweeten the facility’s purchase deal? Council staff travelled to Europe to ‘have a look’ at the supplier’s facilities

operating there, and my question on flight costs was answered – ‘approximately $30,000’. Council’s budgets don’t operate on ‘approximates’. And that answer raises the question: ‘Were there any benefits provided to those staff by the supplier in their European tour?’ The European facility supplier has an office in Sydney and has built Bioenergy facilities here (I have sent two emails and phoned them, just to get info on their existing facilities emissions, but they haven’t deigned to answer). Noting the disinformation on Council’s website, including pictures of the alleged Bioenergy facility, but without its chimneys, and a series of web disinformation answers to residents’ questions, and Council staff providing disinformation to the NRPP, and Council ignoring the residents’ virtually 100 per cent opposition to the plant in both DA submissions and from speakers to the NRPP; perhaps rather than Santos and Fundies it should be Council that is the focus of forensic ICAC investigation of the process. John Lazarus Byron Bay

However, Israel persists in killing Palestinian kids. Take 2 June for example, when Israeli soldiers shot 16-year-old Odeh Mohammad Odeh in the back as he walked with friends about 100m from his home. They also shot at those who tried to reach him. He is the 16th Palestinian teen to be killed by Israeli forces this year. Last year, during the

Israeli offensive on Gaza (10–21 May), 240 Palestinians, including sixty-five children, thirty-nine women, and seventeen elders were killed. The Israeli missiles and shells also caused 1,900 injuries, including 560 children, 380 women, and 91 elders. The Morrison government gifted Ukraine $285 million of military equipment, but that amount could buy 950,000

BulletSafe vests, which could protect Palestinians, particularly children, from Israel’s murderous police, settlers and military. If we are prepared to export killing machines to Ukraine, how much more prepared should we be to send bulletproof vests to Palestine? What about it Mr Albanese? Gareth W R Smith Byron Bay

17 per cent. They say it has nothing to do with the cost of the Bioenergy facility, but is owing to the cost of transporting the Shire’s green waste to Qld for processing. How is it that Council wants to build an expensive high tech Bioenergy facility for green waste and they can’t create a composting facility like Lismore and other councils have to solve this problem? Wouldn’t it be a lot simpler, better for the environment and cheaper to compost our green waste? The other fixed charges in the rates, such as water, are going up by 3.5 per cent. What will happen to our water rates when the cost of the $220m+ Dunoon Dam (now back in the Rous Future Water Plan) kicks in? We have until Friday to comment on the new waste charges. alanced, composed dogs, happy at home or out and about on-lead and under effective control, are a natural and beneficial component of a healthy community. People showing their dogs strong leadership is responsible urban dog management. Morning exercised dogs don’t usually cause nuisance barking and destructive issues. Getting out and about early sets a dog up for a quiet, restful day. But effective public exercise of dogs is all about how you do it, and in Suffolk Park dog laws and social mores are routinely trampled underfoot and paw. With limitless tolerance for the mess of their own making, Suffolk’s entitled doggie deadbeats think it’s their right to inflict their annoying uncontrolled dog on anyone or anything else when out exercising or congregating at mobile coffee retail outlets. Allowing uncontrolled, disrespectful dogs to stand over, menace, or otherwise force themselves on other dogs or people is about as inconsiderate and disrespectful as it gets, never mind the inherent danger the uncontrolled dog is

‘Every off-lead genius has control of their unleashed dog – until they don’t.’ placed in. Every off-lead genius has control of their unleashed dog – until they don’t.

lëŕëīĕŔĕŕƐ ĶŕĕżƐĶƐƖĎĕ ‘He’s just saying hello’, ‘He’s just excited’, ‘He’s just being friendly’. The Suffolk doggie deadbeat demonstrates not only an extraordinarily advanced level of dog management ineptitude but also a total disregard for the law and others’ basic right to walk their own dogs unmolested. Ask the Suffok doggie deadbeat to control their annoying dog and you get one of two practised responses. They’ll tell you to ‘go get effed’ quicker than you can say ‘under effective control’ or look at you like you’ve just snatched their

latte out of their hand. Suffolk Park’s responsible, law-abiding dog owners with microchipped and lifetime registered on-lead walking dogs are sick to death of being harassed by pushy, uncontrolled dogs and their incompetent, aggressive, bullying people. Suffolk Park’s serial resident and visiting doggie deadbeats break the law and bully with impunity because Byron Council is not up to the job. Council’s rangers are invisible, and as is evidenced by this prevalent civil disobedience, plainly ineffectual. They are unable, or unwilling, to educate and encourage and, if necessary, force compliance from dogged doggie deadbeats in persistent breach of the NSW Companion Animals Act. The off-leash areas are

an actual danger at times because Council is too miserly and/or too cynically disinterested to pay the rangers a few hours overtime weekly to ‘fly the flag’ there to ensure everyone gets a safe, fair go. The off-lead areas and selfregulation in Suffolk Park are a demonstrated big fat fail. There is a universal code of dog management etiquette on which commonsense dog laws are based. Council should be telling the dog-owning community this, but let’s not hold our collective breath. Basically, you train your dog to be a responsible, considerate citizen, like you should be. You teach your dog to walk gently to heel on-lead and mind its own bees wax and focus on you when out and about. Your dog is never allowed to lunge towards other dogs or people or encroach upon personal space. It is not even allowed off-lead in an approved area unless you have reliable control over it when it gets distracted. And when it’s off-lead you need to prevent your dog getting too excited and you keep it under effective control. If you can’t manage all that, then you shouldn’t own a dog. Self-evident truths are that dogs are what we make them;

stupid runs down the lead, and invincible stupidity has no lead at all. Competent dog management looks a lot like leadership, dog sense, decency, and respect. And for the last several years the Suffolk Park dog scene has looked nothing like that.

CHESS by Ian Rogers The ACT Championship, over the Reconciliation Day weekend, was won by top seeds Rishi Sardana and Junta Ikeda in the strongest field ever for the event. Though Australian number one Anton Smirnov continued his quasi-retirement to concentrate on university studies at ANU, the field was bolstered by the entry of a number of NSW interlopers, most notably Australian Junior Champion Cameron McGowan. McGowan led the tournament from the start and only a final day collapse prevented the 19-yearold – ineligible for the ACT title – from taking home the $1,000 first prize. The two winners, both IMs, came good when it mattered in the final round. Remarkably, the Ikeda v Sardana match-up which, pre-tournament, was expected to decide the title, never occurred, as both found themselves chasing McGowan. For Ikeda, his ninth ACT title was his toughest yet. He needed to save losing positions against the next generation of ACT stars,

Willis Lo and Michael Kethro, just to stay in the race for first. Then on the final day Ikeda won a marathon game against Sydney data analyst Lalit Prasad through pure sitzfleisch, before finally finding form to demolish McGowan in the last round.

The diagrammed position shows how close Ikeda, White, was to defeat against Kethro. Black’s rolling pawns are very dangerous, and had he played 47...Be7! he would have won quickly, eg. 48.Kg3 Bh4+! 49.Kxh4 f2, or 48.c3+ Ke5! 49.c4 Kf4! when one of the Black pawns will soon promote to a queen. Instead Kethro wasted time with 47...Bf4? and after 48.c3+! Kxc3 49.Rxd5 Kxb3 50.Rd4! he soon found himself grovelling for a draw with bishop against rook. (Ikeda eventually gave up trying to win on move 101!) Q Players meet at Byron Bay Services Club, Sat 2.30 and Mon 6.00

Stop delaying on drug reform say Law Society of NSW Aslan Shand

T

he NSW AttorneyGeneral’s proposed drug diversion scheme and the NSW government’s failure to act on the recommendations of the Ice Inquiry from two years ago are drawing criticism. The Special Commission of Inquiry into the drug ‘ice’ and other drugs was established in response to the impact these drugs were having, particularly in rural and regional communities. It sought to look at ‘Options to strengthen NSW’s response, including law enforcement, education, treatment and rehabilitation responses’. The Inquiry by Commissioner Dan Howard SC ‘not only recommended pill testing at festivals but also the decriminalisation of personal possession of all illicit drugs,’ commented former magistrate, David Heilpern, at the time. ‘To add to the pressure, Coroner Harriet Graham completed an exhaustive inquiry into drug deaths at festivals, which pointed in the same direction.’ Instead of acting on the

recommendations for drug law reform and stepping up to the challenge of helping communities manage drug issues, the NSW AttorneyGeneral has now proposed a drug diversion scheme to give police discretionary powers in issuing fines to people caught with small amounts of currently illicit drugs, says Cate Faehrmann, Greens MP and drug law reform spokesperson. This ‘will still allow police to continue discriminating against the most vulnerable, and is not the solution to reducing drug harm,’ she says. ‘It’s been two years since the Ice Inquiry handed down its findings and recommendations and instead of taking the action needed to reduce the harms posed by ice and save lives, the Government is proposing a weak alternative. ‘Statistics compiled by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) show that during the five year period 2013–2017, 82.55 per cent of all Indigenous people found with a nonindictable quantity of cannabis were pursued through the courts, compared with only 52.29 per cent for the

The 2020 ‘Ice Inquiry’ recommended the decriminalisation of personal possession of drugs. non-Indigenous population. ‘We don’t support putting discretion into the hands of police because it will mean the most vulnerable will continue to be sent to court. Police disproportionately send First Nations people found with cannabis to court, even though they have the discretion not to, so why would this scheme be any different?’ said Ms Faehrmann.

No more delay The Law Society of NSW is also calling on the NSW Government to act without further delay on the recommendations of the Ice Inquiry to implement a healthfocused approach to battling the scourge of drug abuse. President of the Law Society of NSW Joanne van

der Plaat says ‘The Law Society agrees with the experts called to give evidence during the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Drug Ice that the current prohibitionist approach is not working. We agree with law enforcement authorities who have said we can’t arrest our way out of drug problems.’ ‘It has taken far too long for the Government to act on the recommendations of the Ice Inquiry, and now is the time to make a decision and start implementing programs that will tackle the drug problem in earnest. ‘Any further delay on a meaningful response to the Ice Inquiry risks further criminalisation and demonisation of drug users who need rehabilitation, not incarceration.’

The Law Society has welcomed the expansion of the Drug Court through a pilot in Dubbo, combined with the construction of a drug and alcohol treatment centre necessary for achieving effective outcomes for drug-related offenders, but Ms van der Plaat says the Government needs to go much further.

Destroying communities ‘The adoption of this one recommendation of the Ice Inquiry ignores other initiatives like the expansion of the Magistrates Early Referral Into Treatment (MERIT) program, along with programs to assist Indigenous offenders, like Circle Sentencing and the Youth Koori Court,’ Ms van der Plaat said. ‘As a lawyer who has long practised in regional NSW, I am convinced it is vital that diversion and support be extended to regional communities. Many regional communities have been ravaged by illicit drug use, and drug law reform that reduces the chance of offenders possessing very small amounts of drugs being criminalised

should be actively implemented across the State. ‘Furthermore, given that the government established the Ice Inquiry in November 2018 in large part to respond to growing use of Ice in our regional and rural towns, their exclusion from justice reforms and rehabilitation services would be absurd,’ Ms van der Plaat said. Ms Faehrmann agrees pointing out that ‘The government has ignored the recommendations of the Ice Inquiry for over two years now, despite it bringing together the views of the leading drug and alcohol experts. ‘The Ice Inquiry report was clear: full decriminalisation, coupled with a much larger investment in health and social services is the solution to the drug crisis in NSW. Anything less is a cop out and ignores the overwhelming evidence handed to the government two years ago,’ said Ms Faehrmann. ‘The Law Society calls on the government to delay no further, listen to the experts and deliver reforms to help drug users break their dependence and rebuild their lives,’ Ms van der Plaat said.

Orbit Eco Dry Cleaning opens in Byron Bay Orbit has launched its first Earth conscious eco dry cleaning business in Byron Bay. Eco dry cleaning, also known as ‘professional wet cleaning’, uses specially formulated bio-degradable detergents that are non-toxic and safer for the environment. Orbit’s founder, Gerard Jorna, adopted the system as an environmental alternative for dry cleaning. They do not use the solvent ‘perc’, a known health and environmental hazard commonly used by dry cleaners since the 1940s. ‘The process is much gentler on your clothes, which will be returned smelling fresh and clean with no residual toxic odour. Not only is this better for our environment but better for the health of our customers and staff’. Fire at Barrio Barrio in the Habitat precinct in Byron is very much about fire. As they say, ‘Our wood-fire oven and open-flame grill is the heart of our home and we centre all of our dishes around the unique flavours imparted through this style of cooking’. Every dining experience that is shaped by fire at Barrio Eatery & Bar is very different, forging a fundamental connection between the chef and the ingredient. Now, Executive Chef, Santiago Socrate from Barrio will be inviting a local chef every month to collaborate with him on the barbecue grills in the kitchen. The first event is Wednesday 15 June with award-winning Scottish-born chef Alastair Waddell from Frida’s Field in Nashua. Alastair is known for his classical training and deft skills in creating delicious, produce-driven cuisine using seasonal crops grown by the farm at Frida’s Field and other local producers. ‘This wil be a great opportunity to share my favourite style of cooking with friends and colleagues, because that's what Asado (cooking over fire) is about.

You can make a distilled spirit from just about anything, for example the Chinese were making distilled beverages from rice beer 2-3000 years ago, arak was made from sugarcane and rice, mead from honey, and brandy from grapes. The main ingredients are carbohydrates (like sugars, or something like barley that can be turned into sugar by enzymes) and yeast. Once you have your alcoholic base, say at 5 per cent ABV, you can use a still to evaporate the alcohol (which boils over 78.5 C) leaving the water (which boils at 100 C) behind. After you cool the hot vapours in a condenser, the liquid will have a higher alcohol content than your base. For example, kombucha is made of water, sugar, tea, and then a different yeast is added with more sugar to make it more alcoholic, however it appears that no-one had

thought of going the extra step and distilling it – until 2021, when Dom Hurley and Shanu Walsh of Ventura Brewing found themselves with excess stock during lockdowns and asked nano-distillery Cabarita Spirits to give it a go, in what they say is a ‘world’s first’. Apparently the resulting ‘Goodtime Moonshine’ has a ‘bright vibrancy and floralcitrus flavour’ with ‘elderflower, lemon blossom and hibiscus’ (from the ingredients of the original kombucha). The original kombucha was 5 per cent ABV, and the resulting kombucha spirit is 37 per cent

ABV. But in addition to the satisfaction of producing an innovative product, both businesses said they also relished the chance to collaborate and create together. As far as I can see, it’s not possible to buy the ‘Pacific Moonshine’ (which Cape Byron Distillery produced from kegs of Stone & Wood Pacific Ale in late 2020) anymore, so if you want to try some of this world’s first very limited ‘Goodtime Moonshine’, get in quick. Smoothies and Bronwyn Yeldham Victoria Cosford Juices and smoothies had always been a big part of Bronwyn Yeldham’s lifestyle. She’d go to her local market, pick up the produce and create her own, until, about three years ago, she decided to start selling them. ‘I saw a gap’, she tells me, ‘and the idea presented itself.’ Over time her little business has evolved to include cosy, nurturing breakfast bowls and porridges, perfect for the cooler weather. Bronwyn started experimenting with different mixes, ideas gleaned from her extensive travels, using grains like quinoa, oats, chia seeds, determined to keep it all plantbased. ‘I wanted it to be a

little bit new’, she says, ‘but also traditional.’ Her background in cooking and hospitality saw her create beautiful gourmet toppings such as pears poached in chai spices, a compote of blueberries and orange, a lacing of maple syrup and tahini. On the first day she presented her porridge she felt plagued with doubts – ‘homely old porridge people can make

at home!’ – but her instincts served her well as customers responded eagerly to the comforting, nourishing quality of the breakfast bowls. Most of the ingredients Bronwyn uses are organic and sourced from the market, and her colourful blackboard menu describes the content of her various offerings under whimsical names. Her coldpressed juices (‘Easy Green’; ‘Visionary’; ‘Beetle Juice’) are packed with vitamin-filled fruit, vegetables and herbs, while the smoothies, called variously ‘Dragon Ball’, ‘A Date With A Nut’ and ‘Blueberry Burst’ are based on coconut milk, coconut water, oat milk and almond milk. And taste heavenly, far richer and lusher than you’d expect from all those worthy ingredients. And while she has other breakfast bowl combinations in mind, Bronwyn is progressing cautiously. ‘It can be too much for one bowl’, she says – because, after all, often less is more! Bronwyn’s Smoothies stall can be found every Tuesdays at the New Brighton Farmers Market from 8am-11am

Tombo is a gem of a cafe that has opened in Mullumbimby’s eclectic and thriving industrial estate. Japanese for dragonfly, the theme is modern Japanese and the style of the place is a perfect balance of elements, warm natural materials sit harmoniously with polished industrial aesthetics, warm and airy, relaxed and stylish, a pleasure to be in. Inside there is ground floor and loft seating as well as outdoor tables that have a sunny raised outlook with views of Mt Chincogan. It may seem a strange thing to say, but the cafe has what must be the most stylish and capacious restroom of any business in Mullumbimby. Sitting out from the main street and from the mainstream in an area that is alive and happening, it has its own food hub, two kombucha breweries, steelworks, two luxe cosmetics manufacturers, a local brewery, as well as more traditional industrial and craft businesses; says a bit about how unique this place is. Front of house, the noteponymous Timbo ‘I’m all about the vibe’ Parsonage has spent decades perfecting the kind of professional but friendly atmosphere that makes it fun and satisfying to visit the cafe – but whilst making vibe he also makes a great double espresso using Allpress coffee, for example. You can see the care lavished on each coffee, and I also enjoyed the Japanese twig tea, served in an elegant, earthy ceramic pot. Japanese chef Daisuke Shibata’s food is incredibly good. I didn’t think I really liked Japanese food but obviously I’ve been eating at the wrong places, because at Tombo I haven’t tried anything I don’t like yet, and I’ve been back five times since my first visit. If your first thought for brunch is about grabbing something easy, you’ll be won over by the pulled pork rolls (Dai makes his own bread for these) – but be early as they sell out quickly. However, you’d be crazy not to try the house made udon

noodles which have a mouthsmackingly tasty broth. There was also a lunch special of spiced chicken, namul, choy sum, poached egg, beautifully pickled vegetables and rice, which was art in a bowl and delightful to taste. Tombo also offers a breakfast congee – this is the sort of food that Japanese people might enjoy in Japan. Both partners seem to relish having their own business, after a combined 60 years of working for other people, they are relieved to be able to focus on their own contribution to the cafe, each trusting the other partner’s experience. For Dai, the opportunity to create his own food is particularly satisfying, almost on a spiritual level. ‘I regard the udon noodle as the real Japanese soul food,’ says Dai. ‘It’s important to me to make it properly, so I cut all the noodles by hand. You know, from a business point of view it’s easier to just buy noodles, or the buns, but I feel very satisfied when I make them by hand – I feel it comes from my soul,’ says Dai. ‘The same with Japanese curry. If you buy it off the shelf

in the supermarket, it has a lot of ingredients that I wouldn’t use in my curries. Although some customers wouldn’t notice, I think it’s important. I also have been enjoying making congee. It might not be something that everyone has for breakfast here in Mullum, but it’s been really popular. We especially make it in the morning.’ Noodles and curry are available from 11am, and I recommend getting in early or phoning ahead as they have been known to sell out by say 1pm. ‘Not everyone is happy,’ laughs Dai, ‘some people just want a bacon and egg roll, which I could make, but really you can get that anywhere. I think it’s important to offer people something different, that’s unique. To me, it’s part of a process of maturing, to own your own business, and that’s part of the symbolism of the Tombo, of the dragonfly. In Japan it has a very positive symbolism, as it is always flying forward.’ Tombo Cafe – Ph 02 6684 6167 Byron Food Hub 3 16-18 Towers Dr Mullumbimby

SAMMY J TICKLING YOUR POLITICAL FUN SPOT Anyone who watched the media coverage of the 2022 election will know that the best thing, apart from Scott Morrison’s departure, was watching Countdown to Glory featuring The Government Coach, a man tasked to lead The Mighty Blue Ties (The Liberal Party) to a win in this year’s Grand Final, a.k.a. the federal election. As the results show, the Coach (known to his bucket loads of loyal fans as Sammy J), chalked up a loss on 21 May and he announced a very public resignation from his position. ‘I love this club. When I was a boy, kickin’ legislation in the backyard with dad, I never dreamed I would one day be the coach of The Mighty Blue Ties. Serving this club has been an honour and a privilege. But, we just got our asses handed to us, which is why it is with a heavy heart, I’m benching myself and resigning as coach, effective immediately.’ Lucky for us, the Coalition’s loss is Byron Bay’s gain, as Sammy J heads north from Canberra to make an appearance at the Byron Comedy Festival. Apart from the hilarious halls of Parliament House, Sammy J has played in Edinburgh, Montreal and London – he’s had a sitcom on Netflix and he creates weekly satirical sketches for ABC TV – the birthplace of The Government Coach – and currently he hosts the breakfast show on ABC Radio Melbourne. Sammy J brings Symphony in J Minor to Byron. A musically-savvy master wordsmith, Sammy J has kept busy during his COVID-19 enforced break from touring by creating satirical sketches, including Playground Politics and National Yoga for ABC TV. MORRIS’ BLACK AND BLUE HEART ‘Aria Hall of Fame inductee, number one selling artist, King of Pop, Australian icon!’ These are a few phrases commonly used when describing Aussie legend, Russell Morris. Shooting to fame in the mid 1960s with ‘Somebody’s Image’, Morris had a string of hits including ‘Hush’ and the Bob Dylan’s classic ‘Baby Blue’. In 1969, he and producer Molly Meldrum, released The Real Thing, Australia’s only true psychedelic Number One hit, and a song that is played regularly on commercial radio to this day. Following that, Morris penned breakthrough hits such as; ‘Sweet Sweet Love’, ‘Wings of an Eagle’, ‘Rachel’, ‘Part 3: into Paper Walls’, ‘The Girl That I Love’ and many, many more. Constantly in demand, Russell stills tours nationally throughout the year as well as appearances internationally. After five decades on the road, an album can almost write itself. It might arrive in the space of a few months, fullyformed in vision and texture in the mind of the vigilant

creator. But it takes a rare combination of talent and circumstances to realise that vision as vividly as Morris’ 2019 release: Black and Blue Heart. Check it out for yourself in Mullumbimby Ex-Services Club, Saturday 18 June at 8pm.

THROUGH NATURE TO ETERNITY FEAT. LIOR Singer-songwriter, Lior is renowned for his beautiful voice, and for lyrics that radiate truth and sincerity, and as the world searches for compassion and understanding, the importance of music as a means of communication cannot be undervalued. In the musical narrative of Through Nature to Eternity, in its love, loss and compassion, Lior is joined by Tinalley, a string quartet internationally acclaimed for their addictive sound and intuitive music-making. Together they will perform a new song cycle by Melbourne composer, Ade Vincent. Three of Dvorak’s rousing love songs from his collection of Cypresses; echoes of love cherished, tormented and forgotten, are paired with Barber’s haunting ‘Adagio for Strings’ from his String Quartet, Op. 11, and Lior’s achingly haunting ‘My Grandfather’. In a final quest for peace, Lior and Nigel Westlake reimagine ‘Sim Shalom’ (Grant Peace) from Compassion, merging the symphonic world with that of the string quartet. Saturday, 2 July, at 7.30pm, Whitebrook Theatre, Y Block, Southern Cross University Tix: nrcac.edu.au. Free tickets for flood affected members of the community.

MANDY NOLAN’S

ASSANGE, MUFFINS AND MEDIA FREEDOM This June it’s ten years since Julian Assange sought political asylum at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. Disguised as a motorcycle courier the WikiLeaks publisher sought refuge from extradition to the US – where they want him to face 17 charges of espionage and one of computer misuse. After seven years in the embassy Assange was removed to Belmarsh Prison, and in April this year after three years of incarceration, a British Court approved Assange’s extradition to the US. Assange is in deep shit. And I wouldn’t be holding my breath for the Australian government to step in to bring him home. They’ve had ten years of practising avoidant behaviour on this one. Prime Ministers don’t seem to be picking up the phone and making that important call to Boris. Bring him home Why haven’t we fought harder? Assange has been abandoned by the Australian government, and in turn by us. Why weren’t we talking about Assange during the federal election? In fact, bringing Julian Assange home should have been a much bigger election issue. News of his extradition approval to the US, where he could face a maximum sentence of 175 years, came through during the campaign period of our federal election. It was barely mentioned. This would have been an opportunity to talk about media diversity, about the

www.echo.net.au

changing landscape of digital media. And about ‘digital freedom’. About how we can keep the public informed and journalists protected at the same time. Pre-election we got to see what happens when a government screws the media shut. I was listening to my public broadcaster present stories about how many different types of muffins there are, ensuring there was a spokesperson for every variety. While talkback focused on the big issues of muffin types, one of our most notorious and fierce advocates for free speech was in serious trouble. Without powerful diplomatic negotiation, Assange’s muffin is cooked. Why have we stopped caring about Assange? It goes like this – they are waiting for us all to forget; to ensure his folklore and his story are obliterated – not by stories declaring him a threat to national security, a villain, or even a hero – no, the execution of Assange is occurring by the absence of stories. Journalists who write about the important work of other journalists prove how dangerous it is to be a good journalist. And when journalists don’t write about you, it means your work is more dangerous still. I guess it’s not suprising. Australia isn’t really the pin-up country for media freedom and diversity. We’re ‘Murdochland’. No other Western democracy has the same level of media monopoly. Of course we’d push for a Royal Commission into media ownership but we can’t get anyone to carry the story. Oh, and Assange may have asserted early in the piece… ‘I’ve got dirt on Rupert Murdoch too’. It’s pretty clear that people in power don’t like whistleblowers. In the past, whistleblowers were often journalists. And here in Australia, Murdoch makes the whistles. The kind you can blow, but they make no noise… just air. What happens to human rights, freedom of the press and democracy when journalists like Assange are locked away for doing their job too well? In our democracy, we don’t need a free Coke with our Happy Meal, we need a Free Assange. We need a Happy Deal.

IT’S BECAUSE OF LOVE All-star band The Dawn Light, based around husband and wife Angela Newcomb and OJ Newcomb, released their debut album yesterday. Because of Love is a 12 song album capturing the exquisite singing and songwriting of Japanese born, Sunshine Coast-bred Angela Newcomb. After many years of deeply connecting with the profound verses of great mystic poets – Hafiz (renderings by Daniel Ladinsky) and Francis Brabazon – Angela began to embrace their poems as lyrics, writing songs that could be described as a dear companion to the human spirit, shedding beams of light, joy and inspiration on the path of life. This album, and band, also features highly acclaimed musicians Charles Wall (aka Bobby Alu) on drums, Brodie Graham on guitar, Gareth Mews on violin, Rohan Seekers on keys and Nick Garbett on trumpet as well as beautiful string arrangements by Steve Newcomb and Sarah King.

Angela says the album is a collection of songs she has written combining mystic poetry and music – her two favourite anchors of beauty and inspiration in the life of her spirit. ‘These songs have become a dear companion to me over the years as the wisdom in the poems keeps unfolding and deepening with life’s experiences.’ Angela says a highlight of the recording process was hearing her songs come to life with the addition of all the parts played by an incredible group of musicians. ‘I wrote the melody and the chords in collaboration with OJ but each player brought their own beautiful hearts and flavours. We also got very excited during the recording process and commissioned string and horn arrangements for many of the songs, which add so much beauty and such a lushness to the album. Working with producer and engineer Paulie B was such a treat too. He has an amazing ability to get the best out of people. I just appreciate everyone’s input so much.’ Angela says one of her main intentions was to create something of beauty with a whole lot of heart, that from time-to-time prompts within the listener the urge to go inward and connect with that sanctuary of peace, joy, stillness, humour, limitlessness, and true beauty that is within. And hopefully enjoy a moment or two when they burst into one of those irrepressible grins that kinda freak people out but make the world a better place. Because of Love will be launched in Byron on Sunday at the Byron Theatre. Doors open at 3pm with support from the Peter Hunt Band and Animal Ventura.

A CLASSIC AS ONLY THE SILVER SCREEN CAN DO It’s considered one of the most famous Hollywood classic films of all time, and for good reason. Certainly the most quoted and the most frequently cited as an all-time favourite, Casablanca won Best Picture, Director, and Writer Awards at the 1943 Academy Awards ceremony. Set in French-controlled Casablanca, Morocco, in the early part of World War II, Casablanca follows hardboiled American nightclub owner, Rick (Humphrey Bogart), who agrees to hide some stolen (and highly coveted) transit letters, which are used by refugees to leave the country and escape from the Nazis. Police Captain Renault (Claude Rains), and Nazi Major Strasser (Conrad Veidt), are tipped off that Rick might have the letters, and they put pressure on him to return them. Strasser is also hunting escaped Czech resistance leader, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), who arrives at Rick’s with Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman). Rick and Ilsa have a history, and Rick is still deeply angry at the woman who disappeared from his life years before. What ensues is a story of love, betrayal, sacrifice, narrow escapes, and the most memorable airport tarmac scene in film history. Celebrate the 80th anniversary of Casablanca on Byron’s biggest cinema screen, with a specially crafted menu of gin cocktails at the Byron Theatre Events Bar and live music in the courtyard (before and after the film). Attendees are encouraged to dress in their favourite winter Black & White attire, as if you’d stepped out of the silver screen yourself. Special prize for best dressed! Doors, bar & live music in the courtyard from 5.30pm, with a 7pm screening. For more information visit: byroncentre.com.au.

Both Sun and full moon in mutable, peripatetic, socialising signs suggest a week of frenetic engaging, mind-changing and rearranging...

GE

www.echo.net.au

1

PRUNING ~ REMOVALS ~ STUMP GRINDING

ARIES: With two planetary accelerators in your sign; pushy, insistent Mars egged on by expansive Jupiter, this week’s brief is to maintain that sexy swagger while gentling the tempestuous Aries tendency towards arguments, which easily escalate into meltdowns. Best lighten up Rams, or risk your own worst fear: becoming repetitive.

CANCER: This week is beneficial for brainstorming, which could give current projects some much-needed leverage. Rocky relationships that have been on shaky ground could benefit when the tell-it-like-it-is full moon energy on 14 June opens an encouraging portal for the unsaid to be spoken and discussed.

TAURUS: If relationships, including yours with yourself, have tended towards a bit ho-hum lately, yawn no more. A Mercury/Venus/Uranus meet-up in your sign, plus this week’s adventurous full moon are guaranteed to rocket you out of any rut. Even just talking about taking ‘a vacay’ could refresh your zest.

LEO: This week’s volatile combination of fire and air elements ignite exciting ideas, but also make for a potentially flammable and eruptive atmosphere; so wise Lions will keep their more forceful reactions under control, and perhaps examine them solo. Best focus? Meeting new people, listening to different viewpoints, gathering information.

GEMINI: Geminis thrive on sampling life’s varied and tasty flavour sensations, with this week guaranteed to satisfy your appetite. But accepting absolutely every tempting invitation could definitely lead to overload when Mercury doubles your Sun energy early next week. Stay sane and stable by factoring in some dedicated chill time.

VIRGO: Don’t rush, slow down, resist multitasking, and your attention to detail will be appreciated this week, by friends and clients alike. Take a break from doom-scrolling through triggering headlines and you can’t fail to be amused by the delightful variety of moveable feasts, mind games and playful entertainments on offer.

LIBRA: If Libran life is currently resembling a rerun of Absolutely Fabulous, burning the candle at both ends isn’t the best method of balancing late week’s dizzy Libra moon energy, sweetie darlings. Better to relax and enjoy Venus currently in money-magnet mode, and there’s always a spot of retail therapy to soothe the frazzled soul.

CAPRICORN: Feel like everyone’s carrying on their own conversation, not listening to what others have to say? Try not to add to the cacophony. Cut through the waffle and you might find you know more about a certain something than you thought. And although clearing the air could bring temporary clashes, it’s probably worth it.

SCORPIO: Jupiter’s move to your personal sector of work and wellness emphasises both these areas till October, with Saturn instigating nitty-gritty reality checks on ethical uses of technology. Insider health tip? Scorpions are astrologically inclined to benefit from acupuncture. Current caution? Resist whipping out the sting during weekend Scorpio moon.

AQUARIUS: If your need for freedom is butting heads with your wanting something worthwhile and lasting, is there a way you can combine the two in this week’s stew? Tune in on 14 June when a full moon surge of enterprising energy switches on a beacon of insight and inspiration to get your current mission in motion.

SAGITTARIUS: This week’s breaking astronews is annual full moon in Sagittarius on 14 June shining a light on something you hadn’t realised yet – eureka! And there’s so much more to know, as new opportunities beckon in the direction of exciting explorations, expanded education and multicultural mingling. Resist time-wasting distractions.

PISCES: A Pisces prime minister, plus two power planets activating your lust for luxury and urge to splurge... this week you’re spoilt for choice with a shifting kaleidoscope of possibilities and multiple options. What’s needed to take best advantage of these? Discipline. Discernment. Backing up intuitive flashes with facts, figures and statistics.

Welcome to all the NSW police, who swarmed around Mullumbimby on Tuesday and protected Telstra during their 5G installation. A police presence would have been very helpful three months ago when the town was under water. Nevertheless, we hope you enjoy your stay. Last week’s front page story heading had a wrong date – it was June 6, not July 6 for the flood meeting. Congrats to Lizzy on her Platinum Jubilee. Her Majesty’s birthday, being a public holiday on Monday June 13, means Echo drudges will be celebrating by toiling in the dungeons, while the office remains closed.

There was a comedy of errors last week with the front page picture caption – a couple of last year’s Byron Comedy Festival headliners were mistakenly named as appearing this year. As a result, Jeff Dawson’s French Champagne rations have been halved for the next week. Pictured is the ridiculously talented, acerbically witted, Dan Willis, who will open the Festival at the Beach Hotel this Thursday evening. Dan is photographed here with his daughter Dolly, and festival directors Mell Coppin and Zara Noruzi. Visit www.byroncomedyfest.com for tickets and full lineup. The Labor Albanese government has thrown its support behind perhaps one of Australia’s most polluting proposals: Woodside Energy’s Scarborough-Pluto gas project in WA. According to www.reneweconomy.com.au, ‘Our analysis last year found the full Scarborough-Pluto project will emit almost 1.4 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases over its lifetime. That’s over three times Australia’s current annual emissions, and around 14 times WA’s annual emissions’. The most interesting thing about the Johnny Depp verdict is that 19 children were murdered in Texas with a gun that should be banned.
