Local police said more than 5,000 attended Saturday’s Black Lives Matter protest. After speeches at Byron Bay’s Recreation Grounds, the boisterous crowd then marched through the town for further speeches and performances in Apex Park on Main Beach. A Tweed Byron Police District statement said, ‘Police were generally happy with both events, and the good nature of participants, but continue to remind people of COVID-19 risks and the importance of general hygiene, physical distancing and the importance of staying home if you are sick’. Photo Jeff Dawson Eve Jeffery Thousands of protesters gathered in Byron Bay and Lismore on Saturday to demand justice for Indigenous Australians, an end to Aboriginal deaths in custody, and to support the global Black Lives Matter movement. In an extraordinary show of solidarity amidst the COVID-19 crisis, at least 5,000 locals carrying placards and Aboriginal flags rallied at the Byron Recreation Grounds from around 3.30pm. Among them were

local Indigenous elders and leaders, and representatives from Indigenous nations across the country. There were also representatives from local police, including Byron’s most senior police officer, Detective Inspector Matt Kehoe. ‘Keep this story going, keep it alive, keep our people alive,’ a representative of the Bunyarra Culture Collective told the crowd. The Collective performed a number of traditional dances, including a dance to call in the spirits of the ancestors.

The rally also cheered on local rappers, singers and speakers. Dozens of other rallies were held across the country, including a large rally in the centre of Lismore. Protester Maddy-Rose Braddon said that Widjabul woman, Cindy Roberts, spoke about the Aboriginal deaths in custody and the ongoing systemic racism in Australia. ‘There were powerful stories told by other black people too. It felt safe. There was hand sanitiser and masks available’.

Ms Braddon said Uncle Gilbert spoke and shared a smoking ceremony with John Paden. ‘There was a beautiful and important moment when Cindy encouraged all mob to get in a circle together and supporters were invited to stand around them in a circle in unity and solidarity. ‘The police were invited to join too, and they did. We all got on one knee with our fists in the air to demonstrate our solidarity with the Back Lives Matter movement to end racist violence and deaths’.

Local jobs have plummeted by ten per cent in the June quarter 2020, compared to 2018/19 four-quarter average, according to new figures released by www.economy.id.com. au/byron/covid19. .id community say they are employed by over 300 local councils and regional authorities across Australia and NZ, ‘to provide detailed local area profiles’ as a shared resource for the community. And owing to COVID-19 impacts, stats are also drawn from the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR). Employment sectors that have been affected the most, according to the data, include accommodation and food services (-671 local jobs), education and training (-191 local jobs) and retail trade (-185 local jobs). Those figures exclude the government’s JobKeeper program. Without JobKeeper, .id says job losses would be 19.9 per cent, or 3,248 jobs. The fall in Byron Shire Gross Regional Product (16.6 per cent) was higher than the NSW average of 13.6 per cent. An analysis of local employed residents who may work elsewhere was also presented. Called ‘employed resident impacts’, it suggests that those job losses are also mostly in the accommodation and food service sector. On all three statistical data presented – GRP, local jobs (including JobKeeper) and employed residents (including JobKeeper)– Byron Shire was recorded as being affected more than other regional NSW areas, NSW and Australia.

Ocean Shores residents are set to benefit from a $40,000 grant as part of the NSW disaster resilient and future ready (DR:FR) Get Ready program. Wee Waa and North Richmond were the other NSW communities that participated in the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) program. The funding has been split between a program which aims to engage local youth, and another that will play a role in the disaster preparation process, including a map identifying local flood and bushfire risk areas and identifying important community information. Byron Youth Service’s Ocean Shores Youth Response Team (OSYRT) say they will be using $25,000 of the grant to run five weeks of skills-building and awareness workshops for local youth. This will include sessions from a local Indigenous facilitator, and aims to boost their morale and selfconfidence and provide an opportunity to role model positive behaviours for younger students.

Also pictured is the Hadad family, who emigrated from Israel to Ocean Shores two and a half years ago. Photo Jeff Dawson Ms Bradshaw, FRRR’s program co-ordinator said, ‘I have been so impressed with the enthusiasm of Ocean Shores’ residents to take this program and run with it’. The remaining $15,000 will be provided to the Ocean Shores Community Association (OSCA) to help them bring to fruition a map of the flood and fire risk areas from Brunswick River to the Tweed border.
OSCA president Jan Mangleson said, ‘It will provide a range of information around which areas are prone to flood and fire risk, as well as giving general community information on how to manage and mitigate these issues. ‘Ocean Shores is a relatively new area, and it will also give people information on the local towns, beach access, the five nature reserves in the area, lookouts,
and the layout of the creeks.’ She says the map will have 7,500 copies printed and will be aimed at both locals and tourists. ‘It will show them the geography of the area, as well as important sites; from where to go during an emergency, and how to prepare for emergencies, to where the local shopping centres and other important landmarks are’, said Mrs Mangleson.

Stepping up for wildlife welfare Supporters and wildlife veterinarians came together at the Ballina RSL Club last Wednesday to launch a crowdfunder for Australia’s largest mobile wildlife hospital. It was also the first major event at the club since it reopened in the wake of COVID-19. Northern Rivers vets Dr Stephen Van Mil and Dr Evan Kosack came up with the idea for the mobile wildlife hospital after over one billion native animals lost their lives in the 2019-20 bushfires. They said many deaths could have been averted if specialist wildlife rescue and medical care facilities were available. So far, they’ve raised $180,000 of the $700,000 needed to build, equip and operate the Mobile Wildlife Hospital. While based in the Northern Rivers, the specially equipped semi-trailer will be able to travel to wherever injured wildlife are in crisis.

CSG moratorium bill closely defeated in parliament Nationals Member of the Legislative Council, Ben Franklin, has been accused of ‘putting city interests ahead of country people’ by Lismore Labor MP, Janelle Saffin, after he voted with his colleagues to fast-track a recent vote on the CSG Moratorium Bill. The Petroleum (Onshore) Amendment (Coal Seam Gas Moratorium) bill 2019 passed in the NSW Legislative Council (upper house) last week, but was then defeated in the lower house by 38 votes to 36. Independent MP Justin Field said the government ‘abandoned their entire parliamentary agenda to force this legislation to a vote to avoid [a] community campaign’. Franklin, who relocated
to Byron from Sydney, lost against Tamara Smith (Greens) for the seat of Ballina at the 2019 NSW election. Saffin claims the Nationals’ buyback of CSG licences was driven by a concern for electoral losses for the Nats. ‘It was not support and protection for us; it was “jobs” protection for them’, she said. Franklin replied by calling Janelle Saffin a ‘hypocrite’, as she was part of the previous state Labor government that approved CSG exploration licences for the North Coast. He said, ‘The state government has given an ironclad commitment that it will never allow CSG mining to occur on the North Coast. That commitment stands’.
However, Franklin conceded that as a transition energy, ‘there may well be other parts of the state where gas exploration is appropriate – as long as it is independently assessed, and given appropriate environmental approvals’.
$2B gas deal In January, both the NSW and federal Liberal-National governments made a $2B deal to expand the gas industry. Field, meanwhile, says voting against the
moratorium ‘puts at risk water resources like the Great Artesian Basin and the farming communities who rely on it’. He said, ’A Parliamentary Inquiry late last year found half of the recommendations of the NSW Chief Scientist’s 2014 Independent Report into the CSG industry had not been implemented. ‘That’s why this bill was necessary. It held the government to their own commitments’.

A lesson in moving forward after DV Tyranny march Story & photo Eve Jeffery Having your life splashed across national television might be great if you’re a rockstar, but it’s not so fun if you’re a survivor of domestic violence (DV). Local woman, Jacqui Barker, felt compelled to air the gritty details of her relationship with her former partner in the hopes of highlighting the unjust outcome of a violent act. On May 24, Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes broadcast an interview with Jacqui and a report about a criminal case she mounted against her ex, Mark Jacobs. On the night of November 20, 2015, an argument escalated and ended with Jacobs throwing petrol and some splashed onto Jacqui. Afterwards, Jacobs was given what Ms Barker believes was a $1,500 slap on the wrist. Feeling the QLD police and the judicial system had let her down, she enlisted the help of barrister Clem van der Weegen to pursue the case ‘privately’. It took a long time to get to court, and in January this year, Jacobs pleaded guilty to threatening violence and admitted to splashing petrol on Ms Barker.
No conviction Noosa Magistrate Christopher Callaghan sentenced him to 120 hours of community service, but said that no conviction would be recorded. The 60 Minutes program highlighted the apparent inadequacies in the system,
Jacqui Barker. but Jacqui got to have her day in court – after more than four years of fighting to bring Jacobs to justice – and is now trying to step forward after the huge financial abyss the case created in her life. Part of moving on has been opening a Byron Shire business and getting her life, and her children’s lives on track. Ms Barker says that exposing a perpetrator of family violence is a known ‘triggering event’ in any risk assessment for future violence. ‘This is the reason I moved interstate for safety after I brought criminal charges. I have found the community here to be really supportive, and although my PTSD is sometimes still triggered, I am now able to live free of fear in this beautiful place.’ Ms Barker hopes to advocate for family violence survivors to have better outcomes in the criminal justice system, focusing on evidence-based solutions such as introducing Lethal Risk Assessment as a standard tool for police to use to assess the level of protection
real farmers, real food
a survivor needs. She says, ‘I believed this would save lives. At the moment a survivor’s experience in the criminal justice system is really a lottery – it depends on the individual police officer’s understanding of the dynamics of family violence.’ Ms Barker said for survivors to achieve justice in court, a perpetrator’s pattern of behaviour, including previous AVO’s – which are currently inadmissible – need to be made visible to the court. ‘Without this, as in my case, a serial perpetrator is able to present his violence as a “one off” out of character act and then receives an inadequate sentence that fails to either make him accountable or to change his behaviour. ‘Typically, he then just moves on to the next victim.’
Public mask Ms Barker feels it is really important for everyone to be alert to the fact that many perpetrators hide behind a public mask of the ‘good guy’. ‘An example is Hannah
Clark’s estranged husband. My ex-partner used his public image as a lifesaver, a community hero, to both groom women and to hide his abuse. In these situations, it can be really difficult for a victim to be believed when she does speak out.’ Ms Barker says she is also passionate about supporting trauma recovery for family violence survivors. ‘Although you can never be the person you were before you experience violence at the hands of an intimate partner, it is possible to find hope and joy for life again. ‘By supporting women to recover from trauma we’re also supporting their children to heal, and helping to prevent the long-term effects of trauma on physical and mental health. ‘At present, the only options are medication or talk therapy, and while both have their place, neither heal trauma, as neuroscience tells us that trauma is stored in our bodies.’ Ms Barker says she found yoga to be a powerful tool for healing and this is backed by a large body of international research. She founded Cocoon Yoga to continue her road to health and to help others. ‘I have re-trained as a yoga teacher and I offer these tools to help anyone navigate stress, anxiety, and to gently support trauma recovery – it’s not just for family violence survivors.’ ▶ Read more about how Jacqui Barker took Mark Jacobs to court on www.echo.net.au.

Friday’s march against all forms of tyranny, including 5G and forced vaccination, drew around 300 people in Mullumbimby. After gathering at the Byron Shire Council chambers, they marched through the town to the grounds of the Mullum Civic Hall to hear
speeches. Police said in a statement they were generally happy with the good nature of the participants, ‘but continue to remind people of COVID-19 risks and the importance of general hygiene, physical distancing and importance of staying home if you are sick’.
White shark suspected for fatal attack While the Gold Coast and surfing communities mourn the loss of Rob Pedretti, who was killed by a shark on Sunday morning at Salt Beach, Kingscliff, a NSW Department of Primary Industries shark biologist has assessed photographs and believes a white shark was responsible. Beaches between Kingscliff and Cabarita were cleared of swimmers and surfers and closed for 24 hours by NSW Police and the local Surf Lifesavers after
the attack. While there is a real-time shark listening station located opposite the Kingscliff Surf Life Saving Club, no tagged sharks were detected, or by the Byron Bay shark listening station, located around 50km south at Clarkes Beach. Beachgoers are urged to follow safety advice from Surf Life Saving NSW and by visiting the Department of Primary Industry’s website www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/sharks and the SharkSmart app.

Byron Council is struggling to find a home for its latest public art experiment – a giant, metal pandanus seed pod named Memento Aestates. The brainchild of Brisbane artist Gio Veronesi, the artwork will cost $80,000 when completed – considerably more than the ill-fated ‘Disco Dong’. However, it appears that the sculpture is not a natural fit for many of the available locations in the Byron CBD. The work was initially set to be installed in Railway Park, but a combination of delays in determining its form and materials, and changes to the layout of the park led this location to be abandoned. Council and its specialist consultant, Plummer and Smith, then explored the possibility of including the seed pod as part of its planned redevelopment of the Byron Rail Corridor. But this plan was knocked on the head by the consultant responsible for the corridor project, Catalyst Heritage Architects. ‘The proposed public art project appears to have little
obvious interpretive connection or meaning relevant to the highly significant historical rail activities of the former Byron Bay rail corridor,’ the consultant told Council. Next was a plan to put the $80,000 sculpture off to the side of the corridor, but that idea was also rejected. ‘This small area is dominated by existing trees, the adjacent car park, and an existing padmount transformer,’ Council’s Community Project Officer Joanne McMurtry said in the agenda to this week’s Public Art Committee meeting. Finally Council and the various consultants have found a location they agree upon – the Sandhills estate. Located on the eastern edge of the CBD, the estate is slated for a redevelopment project including the installation of an all-abilities skatepark. Discussions are underway with stakeholders in preparation for the design phase of the Sandhills project. Assuming the Sandhills site gets the green light from the public art committee, it will come before next month’s full Council meeting for a vote.
NSW Parliament life under lockdown While COVID-19 continues to affect business and people’s lives across the planet, how is NSW parliament dealing with the pandemic? Local NSW MP Tamara Smith (Greens) told The Echo that only 23 MPs, plus the speaker, are allowed in the chamber at any one time. ‘There is no public access for question time or into the parliament at all – it is closed to both the public and lobbyists. There are strict entry requirements for politicians and their staff; staff are encouraged not to attend if possible. ‘Every person who enters parliament – from the premier to the cleaners – must have their temperature and symptoms checked on arrival by a team of nurses who then
give a stamp for the day that you must display on your person’. Ms Smith added, ‘One positive of the lockdown is that the government has dropped their own five questions during question time. ‘So we just have the usual five questions from Labor, and one question from the cross bench. No more self-congratulatory, Dorothy Dixers from the Liberal-National Party (LNP) is a nice change. ‘A full return to parliament and public access can see more than 1,000 people in the parliament at a time. ‘It is hard to understand how the government plans to return our parliament and our democracy back to normal without a vaccine’.

Threats, trauma and theatre: Part 2 of David Heilpern’s life as a NSW magistrate Paul Bibby David Heilpern was in the early stages of his career as a magistrate when his life was threatened for the first time. ‘This guy had come to town seeking contact with his daughter, but his ex-wife got wind of it and left town with the kids,’ the recently retired magistrate recalls. ‘His reaction was to nail gun the family pet to the door of the house.’ When the matter came to court Mr Heilpern refused the man bail, but the decision was overturned in the NSW Supreme Court. A few days later, the angry father returned and put a bomb under the court. ‘That was the first of literally dozens of threats to kill me that I had to put up with for the next 20 years,’ says Mr Heilpern. ‘There are currently three people in custody for threatening to harm me. And I can honestly say it was pretty much continuous, except for a few gaps.’
Death threats Opening up for the first time about his career, Mr Heilpern says that the stream of death threats directed toward him and his family contributed to his decision to take early retirement. ‘I refused to be intimidated by that shit, but, yeah, it’s not a good way to live,’ he says. ‘The most recent one involved somebody saying that they’d approached another person to have a contract to have me killed. ‘That sort of stuff floating around is not good.’ Even more challenging, Mr Heilpern says, is the vicarious trauma he experienced
Are you a resident of Federal Village? We are looking to submit a Development Application for the property at 911 Binna Burra Road, Federal, known as 'Peaberry Farm'. The application seeks to establish a small-scale, sustainable, farm-to-plate Cafe open to the public, and complimentary visitor accommodation. The proposed Cafe will have a limit on the number of visitors, and operate during daytime hours only. The proposal occupies less than 8% of the site, avoids sensitive habitat, occurs on cleared land only, and proposes significant landscaping and ecological enhancement to the site. We invite you to a Community Information Session at Jasper Corner Hall on June 25th between 4pm - 9pm. Due to COVID number restrictions, we ask you to book a time slot to visit. David Heilpern. Photo Jeff Dawson from presiding over cases involving some of the very worst things humans can do to each other. ‘Since the Royal Commission [into child sexual abuse], there’s been a huge number of cases filtering their way through the courts,’ he says. ‘As well as the victims, there’s a huge cost for the personnel involved – the lawyers, the counsellors, as well as, of course, the police. ‘I had all the classic effects of trauma: hyper vigilance, lack of sleep, and decision fatigue.
50 decisions a day ‘I’d make 50 hard decisions in a day and come home and Maria would say, ‘what would you like for dinner?’ and I’d say, ‘If I have to make one more fucking decision I’ll crack up completely. ‘I think I reached a point where I just thought, ‘I can do it… and I can apply
justice, but I don’t think I want to do that anymore.’ Freed from the task of presiding over a daily cavalcade of suffering, Mr Heilpern is now free to indulge in one of his great loves – theatre. A passionate thespian from his university days, Mr Heilpern was a member of the much-loved Northern Rivers troupe, the Stand-Up Poets, prior to becoming a magistrate.
Passionate thespian Now he is preparing to return to the boards with a one-man show he has written about his experience as a magistrate. He says audiences can expected pathos, laughter, and the chance to walk for a while in a magistrate’s shoes. ‘The truth is that we’re human beings, just like everyone else – we have prejudices, bad hair days, we experience the stresses and strains of life, illness, mental
health, the lot,’ he says. ‘I’ve laughed on the bench, I’ve cried on the bench. I mean do people really want us to be automatons? ‘I’m hoping this show will bring some of that home to people.’ Mr Heilpern says he is also looking forward to a return to his activist roots. He is already working with the community legal organisation Barefoot Law and further collaborations are also under discussion. ‘I’m looking forward to speaking out on issues that I care about,’ he says. ‘I mean, 21 years of not even being able to write a letter to the editor… ‘It’s not a huge thing, it’s not blood on the tracks. ‘But in effect, you’re a magistrate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. ‘I look forward to figuring out what I want to do when I grow up.’
Police focus on hospitality Local police say they will be focussing on education and compliance in pubs, clubs, restaurants and other licensed premises now that COVID-19 restrictions are easing. Tweed Byron Police District said in a statement that there are still health risks and a number of restrictions still apply. Personal details are required for entering a licensed premise, they say, including name and/or email/mobile phone number.

Civil liberties: good or bad? With attention fixated on injustice, policing and black lives, the NSW Council for Civil Liberties (NSWCCL) is just one voice of sanity in a country awash with racism and bigotry. Based in Sydney, they are a small group of lawyers committed to educating the public and advocating for the most vulnerable. NSWCCL said in statement regarding the marches, ‘There have been 432 Indigenous deaths in custody since the 1991 Royal Commission – including the recent death of Tanya Day, which the coroner found to be preventable – and its recommendations have never been fully implemented. ‘To our knowledge, no one has ever been convicted in relation to those deaths. Indigenous peoples are over-policed and overincarcerated, with adults 15 times more likely to be incarcerated than non-Indigenous Australians and juveniles 26 times more likely to be incarcerated. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported in December 2019 that while Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up around three per cent of the total Australian population, they account for 29 per cent of the total adult prisoner population in Australia’. Addressing the problems outlined here need compassion, leadership and competency. These are not attributes of federal Home Affairs minister Peter Dutton MP (Liberal). By way of example, the former QLD cop walked out of Kevin Rudd’s Stolen Generation speech in 2008. And his 2002 parliamentary maiden speech was, in part, directed at the Council of Civil Liberties. Dutton said of the advocacy group, ‘Australians are fed up with the Civil Liberties Council – otherwise known as the criminal lawyers media operative – who appear obsessed with the rights of criminals, yet do not utter a word of understanding or compassion for the victims of crime’. So here’s a question for the good burghers who elected Dutton in the north Brisbane seat of Dixon – are civil liberties good or bad? Even if his electorate has no empathy for others, isn’t the best insurance from social chaos a fair, transparent and competent government?
Honouring the disgraced This year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours included disgraced former politicians. How about, instead, recognising those who do actual selfless acts and inform the public, like whistleblowers? Julian Assange and Bernard Collaery come to mind. Both are currently being prosecuted by the governing class for speaking truth to power. This year’s sorry list of grifter recipients include Bronwyn ‘Chopper’ Bishop, and perhaps the worst PM ever to occupy the lodge, Tony Abbott. Journalist Kate McClymont tweeted: ‘I am still in complete shock over this: Graham “Richo” Richardson, bagman, selfconfessed liar, Swiss bank account holder, creator of Eddie Obeid, involved in sex scandals and Offset Alpine, has collected an Order of Australia for his “distinguished service”.’ To be fair on old Lizzie, the Queen’s Birthday Honours is decided by past recipients. It’s just one way the governing class try to maintain an air of respectability while there is contrary evidence. Hans Lovejoy, editor

o Reconciliation Week has come and gone – and also gone is 46,000 years worth of priceless history pulverised by Rio Tinto in the Juukan Gorge. An unfortunate error, apparently – the merciless miner didn’t really know what it was doing, and although some of the Indigenous locals asked it to desist, it had already laid the explosives and apparently could not remove them. And to be fair, Rio Tinto normally has reasonable relations with those whose neighbourhoods are to be detonated and bulldozed. It is not malice aforethought, just a bit of negligence. An oversight, and of course it won’t happen again. But it will, because Rio Tinto, like so much of the Australian ethos, is not greatly exercised by the concerns of our first nations people. Or, as the old political truism contends, there are no votes in Aboriginals. Which is the deeper and more depressing reality of Reconciliation Week. At a time when Australia is debating a reset of the nation in the aftermath of the COVID-19 disaster, once again the chance to involve Indigenous Australians as serious participants is to be sidelined and ignored. Typical is the government’s latest bandaid: an Office of Indigenous Policy Evaluation, a wizard wheeze from the economy-obsessed warriors of the Productivity Commission. The bean counters reckon that the problem is that there is just not enough evidence about what works, and what doesn’t within the hundreds of policies and programs administering Indigenous Australians. Another well paid team of bureaucrats will fix it. To which some of the more restrained Indigenous leaders reply, politely, as always: bullshit. As they have repeatedly pointed out, the biggest issue is that setting top down arrangements from the government rather that empowering the people involved and letting them make their own decisions has failed. It has turned citizens into clients, even to victims. It is not only counterproductive – it is seriously demoralising. Whatever the answer is, we can be sure it is not the installation of a new bunch of shiny bums from Canberra. So once again, we are confronted with the spectacle of police violence, a teenager being battered to the ground

for being rude to a cop. And once again, the justification is that the policeman was provoked – the obvious retort that the teenager had also been provoked was considered irrelevant.
The rallying cries of ‘black lives matter’ and ‘I can’t breathe’ are just as urgent in Australia as they are in the United States Mungo MacCallum And as America tears itself apart in racial warfare, we congratulate ourselves that we don’t do it like that – it is all peace and harmony in our successful multiracial society. That is, if you ignore the terrible statistics of the unclosable gaps, and the fact that 432 of our Indigenous citizens have died in police custody since the findings of the Royal Commission of the issue, published, and largely ignored, nearly 30 years ago. It’s also best if you forget all the other injustices, miseries and atrocities inflicted on those who, until recently, had been incapable of getting their voices heard in the cacophony of triumphalism over mainstream obsessions about such vital matters as rising house prices and franking credits. But somehow we don’t forget, or at least quite a few of us don’t. Reconciliation Week also presented a revival of the push for recognition – real recognition, not the ersatz version espoused by Scott Morrison and his sadly pliant minister Ken Wyatt. The great call of the Uluru Statement from the Heart is still resonating, with more influential backers coming on board. And the overall polling remains favourable – support for the Uluru Statement is not universal, but there is a clear majority. A referendum in this term of office would obviously be difficult: the bigots, racists and professional demagogues would fiercely oppose as divisive – their chutzpah remains unbounded. But if the mainstream, plus a voluble group from the most influential sections of Australia, can be brought on board, a bipartisan commitment from parliament would probably succeed. And the terrible example of America
should make us consider the alternatives: reconciliation or anarchic violence? The appalling video footage showing the killing of George Floyd has triggered protests around the world, and the demonstrations in Australia have developed quickly to include local grievances. The rallying cries of ‘black lives matter’ and ‘I can’t breathe’ are just as urgent in Australia as they are in the United States – possibly more so, as the inequalities are less well publicised. At least the American television networks have ensured that people, even the most reluctant legislators, cannot avoid paying attention. Here there is a tendency to sideline abuses or brush them aside – for instance, the risible excuse from NSW Police Association secretary Pat Gooley that the cop who flattened a teenager and broke his teeth on the road may have been having a bad day. Well, he may have, but not nearly as bad as his helpless victim. And, we can suspect, not nearly as regularly. The systemic imbalance of the system has made it all too obvious that all too often black lives do not matter – or at least not as much as police solidarity. But in the context of the American experience, trivialising this long-standing conflict is not only inappropriate, it could be downright dangerous. As Labor’s shadow minister for Indigenous Australians puts it, ‘Whether we like it or not, it doesn’t take much for racism to come out of the underbelly of this country. We only have to think back to Cronulla in 2005. And of course the Adam Goodes story just last year’. We like to be a bit smug about ourselves, rejoicing that in this instance at least, we are not like America. And we’re not – not yet. But there are ominous signs: as we saw in Minnesota, it only takes one extra atrocity for society to explode. And the patience of our first nation, while remarkable, is not inexhaustible. Should it run out, the demonstrations may turn into riots, and the riots develop into the kind of burning and pillaging we have watched, appalled, from the American TV networks. And if that does happen, reconciliation will not be a matter of justice, fairness and decency. Even for those most opposed to the cause, it will become a question of selfinterest, and at worst, survival.

Fishkill apology I find it extraordinary that Greens Mayor Simon Richardson considers that I should apologise for trying to put the record straight about killing over 12.4 tonnes of large fish (many tonnes washed out to sea) and innumerable small fish and fingerlings in June 2019 after Council opened the Tallow Creek estuary. I gave a presentation to councillors in response to a Council report that did not accurately reflect the causes of the fish kill, or the events leading to it. My premise was that it was reckless for Council to open Tallow Creek in a dry period, against expert advice, and without attempting any mitigation measures, in the full knowledge that it would most likely result in a fish kill.
The basis for my assertions were a series of monitoring reports of Tallow Creek by Australian Wetland Consultancy (AWC). Following the November 2017 major fish kill in Tallow Creek, AWC advised Council that it was caused by the decanting of oxygenated surface waters when landowners opened the estuary in a dry period, leaving de-oxygenated bottom waters behind which suffocated the fish. AWC’s April 2018, November 2018, and April 2019 reports advised Council that if it is necessary to undertake an artificial opening of the estuary then they should first assess dissolved oxygen levels to assess the risk of a fish kill, they should only open it when a rainfall event is likely to provide inputs of fresh oxygenated waters, and that if they chose to open

it at other times then they should install an aerator to reduce the potential fish kill. Despite being told this three times, Council chose to open the estuary on a clear sunny day without first assessing oxygen levels or installing an aerator. They also compounded the problem by not following the opening rules, which resulted in a miniscule $1,000 fine. Councillor Lyon’s praising of Council staff for this is absurd. A week later there was a major rainfall event that would have naturally opened the estuary. This is not rocket science, the estuary naturally opens during rainfall events when the inflow of fresh oxygenated waters prevents fish suffocating. If we are going to interfere with natural processes then we need to mimic them. It is only by fully and honestly acknowledging the causes of the 2019 fish kill that Council and The Greens can learn from their mistakes. Enough of the denials. Dailan Pugh Byron Bay
Skin colour As a white person I am horrified by the senseless death of African American George Floyd. This death, which happened during Reconciliation Week, shines the spotlight on the plight of peoples of colour globally. Deaths in custody are still happening in Australia, more than 30 years after the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. There is need to focus on reconciling the clash between the ‘freedom to’ and the ‘freedom from’ belief systems
CHESS by Ian Rogers ‘I would not play chess if my goal was to only to be in the top ten,’ stated Daniil Dubov after winning the 2018 Abu Dhabi Open. At the time Dubov, 22, was barely recognised by the chess public. ‘I am not complaining since I have a Russian passport and there are [many] decent players in Russia,’ said Dubov. ‘Obviously I am not in the top four or five in terms of fame. Everybody knows Kramnik or Grischuk but nobody knows there is another young guy who is not that bad. But nobody knows – you have to win tournaments like this to show yourself.’ However, after Dubov won the World Rapid Championship he was suddenly a ‘name’, and this was confirmed by his victory at the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge this week. The LARC was the second tournament in the online series organised by Carlsen to amuse himself during the coronavirus months. Carlsen’s business partners put in $US1m to host four rapid tournaments and a final.

Sobriquet The headline above the letters from Sarah Ndiaye and Fast Buck$ (Letters, 3 June) was unnecessary, not funny, and disrespectful to one of our councillors. It is ‘shock jock’ rubbish unworthy of this paper and damages the hard earned editorial integrity which has been a valuable voice for progressive politics in the Byron Shire. The final against Nakamura on Wednesday night was a much tougher contest. The match was tied and went to a single Armageddon blitz game. This tactic had worked for him when he needed an Armageddon game to put out Carlsen in the semifinal, but against Dubov the American came unstuck badly, as shown below. Why height limits?
Runaway Byron?
Mayor Simon Richardson, responding recently to issues of breaching height limits for buildings in the Shire, says that those rules would eventually need to adapt. Why? And for whose benefit? It appears developers continue to hold sway over the future of this, and no doubt, other shires. In relation to the Byron Shire, the height restrictions for our buildings is one of our greatest assets. Standing on the main beach one can look north
Byron Shire Council designs, regulates, and enforces rules regarding development application (DA). Yet Mr Dunn’s 139 Jonson Street development, smack on the roundabout bypass, has been approved by Council staff (again). Yes, they approved the DA objected to by the Northern Regional Planning Panel (NRPP). So now the breach of height and floor space by ten per cent becomes the new ‘rule’ for Byron. Letters committee had ‘unresolved concerns’ regarding the building’s traffic impact. What might they be? We don’t know, the meeting minutes were not published. Well, 976 predicted (daily/ nightly) traffic movements into the 28 units and its commercial properties via a short, single lane laneway, I repeat single lane, servicing holiday lettings, in a designated ‘heritage area’ might be cause for concern? Or how about ignoring the whole Jonson Street frontage as access to the development? Mr Dunn states ‘entry from Jonson Street is not desired or in keeping with broader plans for Jonson Street’. He would know, he was a member of the masterplan group before conflict of interest raised its head. It is curious indeed that directly opposite this DA on Jonson Street is a multistorey apartment complex that has its carpark entry on Jonson Street. Yet the developer rejects this option for his own construction. How about a ‘concern’ occurring with all the light truck delivery of goods and garbage collection being

‘forced to reverse’ into the new Jonson Street roundabout traffic across a newly widened cycle footpath as no onsite turnaround exists in the DA? ‘Still not enough to justify stopping it’ states the mayor, and ‘I think all things considered (read – ignored) this does start to change this end of the town’. Wow, so the mayor surmises this end of town ‘needed change’? What a shame he had to simply sacrifice the amenity, existing ambience, and lifestyle of half a dozen properties; and ignore trucks reversing into traffic on Browning Street, and on the new bypass, because, as he states, he was fearful of a court challenge from the developer. Really? This DA was rightfully objected to by existing home and business owners who ultimately will wear the costs of the developer’s ‘laneway access’ and his unhindered commercial street frontage. Spin or fake news? Buried in the attachments to last week’s Council Meeting was Council’s ‘Annual
Greenhouse Emissions Inventory and Achieving Net Zero Emissions Target’, but it was all fake news. Council now doesn’t count ‘scope 3’ emissions (which can account for 50 to 80 per cent of total construction emissions, including emissions from road works etc), and doesn’t count the emission increases from removing carbon capture forest. Council’s stats do reveal, that despite a staff report ten years ago identifying major emission reductions through buying Green Energy electricity, that they haven’t, and they still buy coal/gas produced electricity. Council’s emissions have been driving the death of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), and the deaths and destruction from the last fire season. And now Council has permanently ramped up its emissions by destroying the carbon capture forest for the Byron ‘bypass’. Council is progressing major projects of a solar farm and a bio-energy plant, allegedly on the basis of reducing emissions. But neither project will achieve that as producing solar electricity doesn’t reduce emissions – the electricity buyer does [the potential green energy has to be bought by an energy provider to achieve the outcome of reducing emissions, the mere existence of the capacity to produce green energy is not enough]. And the bio-energy plant proposes to remove green waste and sewage sludge from composting, to produce methane gas. Byron Council, the fake Greens, and other councillors are sabotaging our capacity to reduce our
carbon emissions within the next ten years. Council’s Net Zero Emissions Target is propaganda. John Lazarus Byron Bay
Misinformation In the months leading up to the American presidential election in November we are about to witness the mother of all state-sanctioned political misinformation campaigns the neo-conservatives have ever unleashed. Donald Trump should be hung, drawn and quartered for his appalling mishandling of the COVID-19 catastrophe in the US alone; notwithstanding the abysmal insult he and his cohorts continue to perpetrate on the entire world. This morally-bankrupted sociopath, who has somehow managed to weaponize stupidity and bring an entire country to its knees within four years is an insult to the human-race. But what makes him so dangerous is his ability to influence the logically-impaired masses who are amazingly unable to comprehend that this cheap bullshit artist is destroying their country. The western world has been in decline since Trump’s election, democracy itself will struggle to survive another four years of this insanity. If the outlandish spin and perpetual lies by neo-conservatives to first gain, and then remain, in power become the norm, the world, as we know it, may be over. One would think that most Americans would’ve had a gutful of this pitiful excuse for a human being ▶ Continued on page 14

THE FRIDGE – winner of the Echo’s short story comp Introduced by Mandy Nolan We have all lived through a rather extraordinary time in history. At the peak of our busy lives a pandemic has forced our economy into the slow lane, people have returned to their homes – those shells used mainly for sleep and recharging before they head to work. While it’s been a time of extreme global concern, it’s also been a time when many have had
a chance to slow down and discover things that they like doing or have always wanted to do, like baking sourdough, learning a new language, or writing stories. It was the fledgling storywriters that Echonetdaily asked to hear from early in the lockdown, and to be frank, we didn’t think we would get much of a response. It was heart-warming to see such enthusiastic engagement – with stories turning up every week!
The stories were diverse, some were recollections about our region; from moon dances to moving here, others were internal narratives, some were pieces of fiction. Every week I had to choose a winner – which was challenging, because many times I was stuck between two stories of very different styles. So choosing the best of the six winners is as equally perplexing. With such different styles I decided to choose the story that had the most impact – the
one that lingered, and that I could remember in detail. That story was The Fridge by Prudence Clark. The Fridge is a stark and prickly piece from the point of view of a woman with an eating disorder. It’s a powerful piece, and it gives the reader a glimpse into the mental illness that has the highest death rate. Eating disorders are common and still very misunderstood. It’s not rational, it’s enduring, and it’s an issue that needs a lot more visibility.
The Fridge, by Prudence Clark
white walls and familiar porcelain. Closes door.
THE BATHROOM
Hum of fridge, deafening. Forget the fucking fridge. Hungry= Fat. Hungry=Fat. Hungry= Fat. Hungry=Fat. Hungry= Fat. Hungry=Fat. Focus. Breathe. Locks bathroom door. Another laxative for good measure. 200 crunches and squats. 150 push-ups. Need to leave. Opens door. Closes it. Lock. Opens door. Closes it. Lock. Leans against the cool tiled wall. The stillness and calm of the bathroom caress her. Go. Unlocks door.
Awake. Eyes snap open. Blinking eyelashes rasp against the pillow. Hungry. Wail of a morning train. Is it mourning? Taste of wine in the mouth. Heavy tongue. Salty. Hum of the fridge. The bloody fridge. ‘Why bother with it,’ she thinks. To appear normal? As a test of strength? For company? She can visualise its every detail, like a mother able to visualise every detail of a newborn.
EXTERIOR: Seven alphabet letter magnets salvaged from a garage sale, for no apparent reason. V,A,K,N,F,C,U. Always jumbled on the door, never spelling nor seeking the truth. A Harvey Norman calendar, never glanced at. Chipped enamel on the left hand bottom corner, a huge gaping stainless steel scar underneath the cheap white veneer. An accident from when it was last moved. The dirt-ingrained door seal, slightly peeling away, yet still closing when forced. Or taped.
INTERIOR: Her favourite. Cold, sterile, hospital-white walls. Empty. Vague vanilla scent. Stainless steel racks. Three. Empty. The misted, smoky coloured crisper compartment, emanating a clean
plastic smell. Empty. Curved condiment shelves. Empty. The glaring light, demanding answers with every opening of the door. The icicle clad freezer, hungry for more than cubes of ice and frozen mince. Lean, of course. Sighing, she shuts the image of the fridge from her mind. Get up. Legs swing out of bed. Torso follows like a disjointed eel. For a moment, hunger envelops all senses. She forgets who and where she is, her purpose, her pain. Her stomach is a tyrannical dictator in a never-ending battle with her mind and the ferocious guilt she constantly harbours. Averting her eyes to the ground, she dashes to the haven of the bathroom and its spotless, mirror-less sanctuary. Locks the door. Breathes deeply. Ahhh. Piping hot, cleansing water. Drinks greedily. Washes away goose pimples on pale, yellowish, almost grey skin. Jutting shoulder blades, prominent hipbones. Long, gaunt neck, thick blue veins acting as constant in-built drips of blood filled nutrition. Paper-flat stomach. Sinewy muscle. Skeletal toes. Yet fat.
Dry off. The weigh in. Not good enough. Too much water consumed in the shower perhaps? Does skin weigh anything? A laxative, or five, to get through the day. Cosmetics to disguise the fragility of the eyes, the jaundiced skin, hungry for vitamins, yet denied. Lank hair vigorously brushed and pulled up and away to disguise its lifelessness. Concentration on being beautiful disrupted by a surge of overwhelming guilt. Flashback of the previous night’s glass of wine after work. The salty cashews on the bar. Consumed, hungrily. Disgusting. She can feel the fat coursing through her blood, depositing itself on her thighs, stomach, and chin. Fuck. Reaches for the toilet, Her saviour. Flips the seat. Kneels down. Fingers probe the back of the throat, searching. For what? Will need to take more laxatives as there they float now, one, two, three, four, and yes, five. Tentatively unlocks bathroom door. The empty house looms before her. Scared to leave the safety of the clean,
Glass of water. Fridge. Glaring. Turn the fucking thing off. Yellow Post-It note, address and number screaming at her. Echoes of the concerned and pleading, yet frustrated tone of her mother’s voice, resound. 10am, 14 Hurst Street, Red Hill, April 18. Doctor Bodetti. ‘For us.’ ‘Please.’ ‘It’s time you got over this.’ ‘You’re killing us.’ What about me? A chance to escape the prison sentence she calls life. To escape the unbreakable cycle of purging, starvation, depression and guilt. To make amends with the fridge undergoing a kind of domestic abuse, starved of any purpose. And the toilet, a victim of sodomy.

Hurriedly dressing in billowing skirts and oversized blouses. Her disguise. Beautiful breasts long since diminished in the quest to be thin. ‘Deposits of fat’ she was told. The image stuck. They were among the first victims. Closely followed by curved stomach, soft skin, rosy complexion and voluminous hair.
Unlocks front door. Breathes. Outside. Health and obesity crouching in wait on every street corner. Food everywhere. She can smell all the vapours in the air, mouth-watering displays and advertisements in shop windows. Eat this. Fresh bread, pastries, eggs with every turn. Two for One. Free before 10am. Oh God. Think. Breathe. Focus. I want to be in my bathroom. I want to be in my bathroom.
The toilet, the tiles, the toilet, the tiles, the toilet, the tiles, the toilet, the tiles. Cashews. Cafes spilling onto the street, people consuming grilled tomatoes, buttery mushrooms, smoked salmon, crusty sourdough, coffee, and bacon. Why is bacon the first thing vegetarians eat? The smell makes people crazy, she thinks. Am I crazy? Discipline. Breathe. Think of the bathroom, the cool tiles. Cashews are full of fat. It never leaves. It grows. And grows and grows and grows and grows and grows and grows. Lantana of the soul. Brisk pace. Bones throb with every step. Satisfying. Her clothes flap in the breeze like a protective parachute. Satisfying. She taps a melody on her ribs. Runs her finger down the side of her shirt. Counts them. At least five. Satisfying. Necks turn. People gape. Heads shake. Mutterings behind cupped hands. Truth never spoken aloud. Sympathetic smiles. Never help. ‘I’m beautiful.’ She says. ‘Jealousy is a terrible thing.’ She says. 10am. 14 Hurst Street, Red Hill. Gold plaque signals the address. Fern leaves cover part of it. She wishes she were in the cover of her bathroom. CTOR Wally Bodetti. B.A: blah fucking blah. Help=fat. They will make you eat. Help=fat. They will make you eat. Help=fat. Musical ribs. Cashews. Non-touching thighs. Cashews. Fridge. Prominent cheekbones. Hungry. Cashews. Skin and muscle. Toilet. Tiles. Turning heads. Cold. Cashews. Scared. Tap ribs. Melodic. Strong. Discipline. Fat. Fridge. Toilet. FAT. FAT. FAT. FAT. I hate myself. I am beautiful, right? YES NO YES NO YES NO YES NO YES NO YES NO YES YES YES. Control. Breathe. Go. Brisk pace. Leave. Discard Post-It note as one discards an afterthought. Sorry. Guilt wavers like a spider web in the wind. Passes. I don’t need help. I can do this on my own, my way. Will get rid of the fridge. Home. Bathroom. Light on. Locks door. Flips toilet seat, kneels.

he Brunswick River still has some extensive areas of mangroves that, thankfully, have not been sacrificed for development, and are a great place for photography if you know what to look for, and where to find it. The only downsides are that on a hot summer’s day in the mangroves it can get as humid as a fettlerʼs armpit; the mud is thick, and the sandflies and mosquitoes annoying. An occasional wallaby or snake make it more interesting, and with climate change – keep one eye open for crocodiles! Crustaceans haunt the mangroves, with Fiddler Crabs being the most colourful and definitely the most interesting. They are closely related to the Ghost Crabs that can be seen racing around the dunes. Female fiddlers have two small feeding claws while the males have one large and one small, and feed by scraping up the surface sediment, which is sifted in their complex mouth parts to obtain organic matter.
Gone before you get there As the tide runs out, uncovering their holes, they come out to feed, attract a mate, or argue with the neighbours. If you walk through the areas they favour, you will most likely never see one, they have already heard or seen you approaching and are away in a blink down their holes. You have to wait, almost motionless, until they slowly begin to re-emerge, and for some species this can take a considerable amount of time. Not having a telephoto lens I have to spot a likely subject, and note the hole it disappears down as I approach, to get as close as I can. I move closer, then it’s back to waiting again, with camera up to face, and finger on the shutter. Some legs first feel over the edge of the hole, then ‘up periscope’ as one of the stalked eyes appears – and heʼs looking right at me, the large object that wasnʼt

Police culture It’s great to see the outpouring of concern re Deaths in Custody. Back in the ‘80s, my partner and I were active supporters in the organisation, Committee To Defend Black Rights, which was directly involved in bringing about two Royal Commissions. Above is an example of the colourful male fiddler crab of the Tubuca dussumieri speicies with its large and small feeding claws. On the right is an example of the female fiddler crab Tubuca coarctata that has two small feeding claws. Fiddler crabs scrape up the surface sediment that they filter to extract organic matter to feed on. Photos Denis Riek there the last time he looked. Donʼt move. Wait a little longer, and he moves further out, until eventually heʼs one of a number of Fiddlers out and about, waving their large claws to attract females, or warn other males.
Colourful species I get some shots before I make a mistake and move, because he hasnʼt forgotten about me. This works fine with the species that favour firmer sand or sand/gravel but there are two very colourful species (Tubuca coarctata and Tubuca dussumieri) that prefer very muddy sand on the banks of some small creeks that drain through the mangroves.
dying in custody). Since then the rate of incarceration of Indigenous Australians has skyrocketed, and there have been 432 black deaths in custody. Nothing to be proud of as a nation. In that time the police have been given a lot more power, and more than once, my partner and I have been victim of their viciousness and lies, and we know others that can tell similar stories. I acknowledge it is not an easy job, but just like the US, I think we are long overdue for a culture change. After all, they are workers, we do pay their wages, and supposedly, they make an oath to the Queen to serve the public with honour. Mick Stacey Ballina

To get good images of these crabs, that show the full colour pattern, requires catching them, washing off the mud, putting them back near their hole and getting the shots before they collect their wits and bolt back down to safety.
Agility and speed the key Catching a Fiddler crab requires far more patience than it does to photograph one, plus a fair amount of speed and agility that I can hardly muster these days. There are six species of Fiddlers that I have seen in the Brunswick River and its tributaries, and luckily I have images of all.

BLACK LIVES – A WHITE MATTER Black voices all around the world have spoken. They are demanding equality. They are calling for systemic change. They have asked us to stop killing them. They have told us they can’t breathe. That’s a confronting statement. It’s an even more confronting reality. Even as a supporter of Black Lives Matter, and someone who absolutely believes in the message, the whiteness of my skin makes me complicit. I am complicit not through action, but rather through inaction. Through the fact that nothing has changed. 432 Indigenous deaths and custody and no charges laid? How can that even be possible? We know if there were 432 dead white people this would not be the case. Why don’t we see black lives? Why don’t we hear black voices? We have been snow blind. Even those of us who, like me, call for accountability. I am still a beneficiary of racial inequity. My whiteness is my privilege, it is the unseen social passport that allows me passage. I know when I am pulled over for speeding, my car will not be searched, when I walk through a department store I will not be watched, when I stand at the counter, I will be served first. That doesn’t feel like privilege when you’re used to it. But that’s the point – my privilege is embedded in a system that favours me. In a system that selects me, with an invisible hand on my back that pushes me forward, it doesn’t push me down. It doesn’t press its knee into my neck. Black Lives Matter has drawn attention to the fact that racism is a white issue. It is an issue that white people need to own. They need to talk about it. They need to dismantle it – and not slowly. They need to burn it to the ground. It is an issue that can’t be properly addressed until true systemic change happens – in the police force, in the legal system, in society. The current system’s mechanisms for change were built by a system that defaults to the status quo. These are the machines of privilege built by white men – by slave traders and colonials. These are the institutions that talk about ‘inviting’ these conversations around equity to the table. But it is a table where every seat is occupied by white men. How hard is it to start a conversation with an establishment that are already sitting? Black people are tired of waiting outside for a chair to become available. That table has never offered anything but disappointment and only illusory change. The table needs to be broken. It’s time to find a new table. We are starting to hear black rage. Rage at the injustice, and the inequity, at the lack of acknowledgement, at theft, at murder, at our cultural pillage. That anger makes us uncomfortable. It makes me want to say ‘it wasn’t me’. ‘Hey brother, it was my ancestors maybe, but it’s not me.’ But it is me. Because my ancestors aren’t here. It’s my responsibility to make restitution, to accept blame, to listen, and to step aside. It shouldn’t be up to the black communities around the world to keep having to explain. Our stupidity, our ignorance, our desire to understand should not be their burden. The onus is on us. For Black Lives to Matter – there needs to be action. White acknowledgement. White surrender. That is the true discomfort for the incumbent. Are we prepared to power share? Are we prepared to step back while our black brothers and sisters navigate a new space; one where white people haven’t drawn the lines? I am hoping the answer is ‘Yes.’ www.echo.net.au/byron-echo Byron Shire Echo archives
SEVEN The Country Witches lifestream – Friday nights at 9pm. www.facebook.com/countrywitchesassociation.
THE LOWDOWN ON SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE VENUES… This is the week that has seen COVID restrictions lift with restaurants, pubs and clubs finally opening their doors. Punters have never been so happy to have a cold beer on tap, from a location that’s not their home! The iconic pubs of Byron are open once again with the Beach Hotel opening its doors last week with a daily program of singersongwriters on offer. The Hotel Great Northern opened last Thursday, but they aren’t about to include entertainment just yet. Venue Manager Hannah Mooney is taking it a day at a time. ‘It’s very limited and restrictive as to what you can do. Shopping centres are packed, but with venues its very prescriptive as to what we can do. Hopefully it’s only a few weeks before we get back to normalcy.’ The Hotel Great Northern currently has limited capacity in the front bar and the restaurant. They may decide to open the Backroom if the need arises. The Railway Hotel won’t be opening this week. Although being an alfresco styled venue makes it the perfect candidate for an open-air beer with a solo musician on stage, State Rail have taken advantage of this time to upgrade the car park so the Rails can’t currently trade. They envisage they will be able to open in July. The Bangalow Hotel will remain closed until next week. Over in Mullumbimby, the Ex-Services have opened their doors, from Monday to Sunday with the restaurant Societa serving Wednesday to Saturday, evenings only. The club is open for bar and gaming and the bistro is limited to evenings. No lunches are available as of yet. Mandy from the club said, of the return to trade so far, ‘it’s been quite steady – but as far as putting entertainment on, we have to wait for numbers to go up. With 85 across the club it’s just not feasible. Hopefully they’ll be easing these regulations in clubs soon.’ The Courthouse Hotel is still not open, but have plans to open their doors for bar service and restaurant on Thursday. There will be a limit to the number of patrons on the premises, and all will need to adhere to government social distancing/ COVIDsafe rules and regulations.
STARS BY LILITH
GEMINI THE TWINS An excellent week to take care of business before Mercury/Neptune retrogrades throw trouble-dust into our communication systems…
ARIES: Your analytic and intuitive superpowers are peaking, though if equanimity’s elusive, being organised is the key. Give clear instructions. Remember you catch more flies with honey. And what’s more annoying than a know-all? One who loves to argue, so the less said the better. TAURUS: You could get a lot done under this week’s productive star map, humming along in low gear, updating what’s currently inefficient, ditching what isn’t working, deciding what to do about energy leaks and how to make more compassionate and inclusive choices. All up, getting into the best possible possie for retro season. GEMINI: Variety’s the spice of life for Geminis, and this week’s people talking up a good story could have you ready to whip out your wallet and flash the plastic. Don’t. Curb that random retail urge before you buy something you don’t need, or sign up to something that could bring you grief. CANCER: Boredom’s been the mother of some very questionable inventions recently, but if an exciting idea strikes you – and that’s likely – don’t let it slide by. Take notes for when you’re ready to flesh it out and go public. There’s plenty of intellectual chemistry percolating, so look for unusual opportunities in this week’s unfolding story. LEO: If the present planetary choreography sees something you’ve always wanted offer itself unexpectedly on this week’s menu – carpe diem! It could be your reward for the efforts you’ve made recently at collaboration renovation. Haven’t made any? Your stars are suggesting that giving what you want is the key to kickstarting your receiving of it. VIRGO: Trying to reinvent yourself or reboot your professional life? With four planets retrograde and two more joining them next week, you’ll need to be patient. Retrogrades throw hitches and glitches in our plans when we’re trying to move forward without the necessary structural foundations in place. Take it day by day…
LIBRA: We all routinely experience relationship imbalance and loss of equilibrium, but happily this is a power-up partnerships week. Just like Librans, two is its favorite number, so practice the existential pas de deux of finding the sweet spot between sensible and psychic, analytic and intuitive. And remember, love, like most things, begins at home. SCORPIO: After plenty of what astrologer Hunter Reynolds calls ‘the beautifully corrosive process of self-inquiry’, this week might find you feeling pretty creatively fired and inspired. And with Mars in your astro-house of celebrity status and amour for the first time in two years, you probably won’t feel like waiting – for anything. SAGITTARIUS: Experiencing dissonance between what you want and what you’re getting? This week offers a benign but fleeting interim where, if you flex your manifesting muscles, the law of attraction could work in your favour. So you may as well practise a bit of creative visualisation. Not your thing? Then write a list. CAPRICORN: Saturn, your celestial sentry, is currently offering the reminder that there’s a right timing for everything, and imposing our own timetable on a rapidly changing universe can meet with resistance. Avoid any kind of hard sell this week, because a ‘Yes’ today could very likely turn into a ‘No’ next week if people feel pressured. AQUARIUS: Your dreams attract some practical magic during late week Aquarius moon, when less stress spells more success. With the present mental overload, that means being a friend to yourself by hitting pause, minimizing multitasking, considering a digital detox, or online diet. Also having a body balance, or whatever might constitute a day spa for your heart… PISCES: As Pisces Albert Einstein observed, ‘Nothing happens until something moves’, and this week’s freefall offers a few new clues to navigating the weird, in-between place where an old life is disappearing with no clearly defined alternative in sight. Look to weekend Pisces moon for some fresh insights.

Turning one is Hunky Dory for Fiona and Tory

It was not quite fish and chips that Fiona and Tory Trewhitt had in mind when they started their working lives, but establishing Hunky Dory helped them make the sea change to Byron Bay after years of visiting and dreaming of living here. ‘We knew the Hunky Dory Founder who had established stores in Melbourne,’ says Fiona. ‘We approached him to see if we could bring Hunky Dory to Byron Bay as we were looking at opportunities that would allow us to make the move here permanently with our young kids.’ The pair made the move and didn’t change the tried and true Melbourne formula, as they knew customers loved it as it was. ‘We just brought it to a new location and added a little bit of coastal vibe to our fitout.’ Any business can be hard in the first year and this year more so because of the pandemic. ‘It’s been a very challenging time for the industry, and us personally, but we just put our heads down and worked through it. We are very fortunate that fish and chips is a fantastic takeaway product and we are so very grateful that the local community continued to support us. Fiona says it was a beautiful time of interaction with regular customers. ‘When people came in, they were really up for a chat.’ Fiona says they have gotten to know so many new customers over the past two months, who have now become regulars, and they really felt the embrace of the community.
Good Taste
‘As one of the only restaurants to remain open seven days a week throughout the entire pandemic trading restrictions, and with such affordable food, we experienced this community at a whole new level. ‘We know that for some people, coming to Hunky’s a few times a week was a form of community connection that helped keep them sane during isolation, even though it was only briefly to collect a meal – we love that we were able to create that space for people when all around us it felt like a ghost town. We personally delivered meals to vulnerable people, and those who were in complete self-isolation and then we introduced UberEats so that we could fully satisfy the demand for delivery. Most of our customers choose to come to us in person though, and we love that.’ Hunky Dory are wanting to say a big thank you to the community of customers who have been such a great support to them, so to celebrate their birthday, everyone who places an order on Saturday 13 June will go into the draw to win a year’s worth of free fish and chips, valued at over $1,000. ‘We serve customers from all walks of life, and have some diehard regulars, so we’re excited to see who our lucky winner will be,’ says Fiona. ‘We know many of our customers have been doing it tough in recent times, and some of our customers have been doing it tough for many years. Letters Failing system
Peaceful Bay
Re Mandy’s column (3 June). If you were hoping to create a dysfunctional system you couldn’t do better than to take our current unemployment scheme as a model. As a system it is authoritarian, paternalistic, and moralistic. The main problem it creates is resentment in its client base. To receive their totally inadequate payment, people are made to jump through invisible hoops. This means people spend more energy trying to manipulate the system than looking for jobs, just as a matter of self-protection. When I was on the dole I asked my handler how many jobs were registered with the agency in a month? I was told: about two labouring jobs and two sales commission jobs. Sales commission jobs are just a modern form of slavery, so you can discount those two. Yet clients can be required to apply for two dozen or more jobs per fortnight. This would be an impossible condition for an unskilled person in a city, but is ludicrous in an area like Byron Shire. David Gilet Byron Bay
My name is Bob Maughan and this is my story; Months ago, I wrote that I was living in a ghetto, with drug addicts, mental health patients and homeless people. I refuse to pay my rates. Well, all good on the ghetto, but now I live across the road from a construction site five-and-a-half days per week. There are trucks, graders, forklifts, rollers, water trucks and concrete trucks at all times of the day. On Monday 1 June at 7am, at least 20 double-B trucks were dumping rocks and graders were moving them. The noise was SO LOUD. When is this going to stop? (Supposedly last January.) This ^*%*^# mayor we have is bullshit! In my 45 years in the Bay I have never seen a Council mess our town up like it has now. This bypass, in my opinion, will not work, and the money that’s been spent is outrageous! West Byron must not happen, the locals know that, it’s just commonsense. It’s all about money. Somerset and Burns Streets are a mess with all this traffic. I am refusing to pay my rates again. As I write this at 7.30am four trucks have just

pulled up. Another Zen day! I wonder how they would feel if it was happening at their front door? PS Council sent me a message saying if I didn’t pay my rates they would charge me back rates of approx $40,000. Bob Maughan Byron Bay
Priorities Australia claims its relationship with Israel has been strained by the Malka Leifer affair in which the exprincipal of the Adass Israel School is accused of sexually abusing her female students. Leifer was spirited to Israel to avoid criminal prosecution and has been sheltered there by orthodox Jews while avoiding extradition to Australia. This issue strains the Israel/Australia relationship, but, while turning a blind eye to Israel’s murder and mayhem in Palestine. PM Morrison’s media release states ‘Australia is a strong and committed friend and partner of Israel. That friendship is based on many things, including our shared commitment to justice, democracy and the rule of law. The Australian government will be unswerving in seeking justice in this matter’.
The Australian government is now blocking Palestine’s bid for justice before the International Criminal Court, so much for Mr Morrison’s commitment to justice! Gareth W R Smith Palestine Liberation Centre

Informed?
My vast system of leakers tells me that there’s been much angst and finger pointing among The Greens as to who has been leaking and to what end. Considering that only weeks ago Simon Richardson ruled that The Greens were a private organisation, which it was inappropriate to discuss in public access at Council, I was quite surprised to see Sarah Ndiaye doing her own leaking to the press. She informed us that only 129 party members voted in the pre-selection process (that’s right: 129 people have decided who our next mayor is likely to be). And that Jan Barham also previously benefitted from affirmative action, thus making it okay for Sarah herself to benefit. Come on Sarah; Jan was bumped up as a first-time candidate for the Upper House, as a leg-up. You, on the other hand, seek to benefit, once again, even
The Australian scientists and researchers from The Oceania Radiofrequency Scientific Advisory Association (ORSAA) www.orsaa.org have released their scientific findings and recommendations for Australian councils regarding radiofrequency (RF) radiation wireless technologies, including 5G. ORSAA is an independent scientific organisation investigating the health risks of low intensity RF-EMR. They have established the largest freely accessed database in the world of peer reviewed scientific research on EMR biological health effects. The research is free from industrial bias and conflicts of interest. I believe that ORSAA’s council report www.orsaa. org/council-letter.html is an excellent and reliable source of factual information, so the general public can gain greater understanding of EMR
and 5G issues and the risks. The report covers statistical analysis of the research papers, and the evidence of biological harm. It explains the inadequacy of current safety standards, provides evidence-based analysis of the health effects of 5G frequencies. The report also talks about associated and predicted threats to the environment, the Earth’s atmosphere and global warming. It finishes by suggesting that councils should consider that they have a duty of care for the health and wellbeing of communities and the environment. Precaution is wise in light of such evidence, and ignoring scientific fact mirrors the plight of climate science. The planned mandatory (no rights) saturation of our environment, including residential areas, with a class 2B carcinogen is hardly the panacea when confronting the depth and scale of problems facing future generations when safer and faster options are available. A must read for those interested in factual scientific information when forming their opinions of RF radiation and 5G. E Ashworth Lennox Head

Rider through the Storm Getting wholefoods and organics delivered to your door seems wise during COVID-19 isolation, but could Rider’s business model be part of a changing face of shopping? Owner Anna Sokol believes so. ‘I’m astounded how friendly and engaged people are… our customers and suppliers have become such close friends,’ she says. ‘I think we share a connection in shaking things up, doing things differently and imagining a future where organics and local goods are affordable and accessible.’ Recent local additions to Rider’s e-store include the exquisite Lovemore Fermentary, Crack Fox Hot Sauce and Earthly Origins’ Tulua Chai. Anna laughs, ‘I’m one of those annoying chai snobs and they make hands down the best I’ve ever tasted.’ Rider deliver Tues and Fri. Order via www.riderau.com

Re-opening history
Kerbside numbering
Brunswick Valley Historical Society Museum will be reopening this Friday, 12 June, 10am till 12pm. The museum, at the corner of Myokum and Stuart Streets, Mullumbimby, will be open each Tuesday and Friday morning. Every precaution has been taken to ensure the Health and Safety of our visitors and volunteers. New volunteers very welcome. Come and find out about your local history.
Ballina Shire Council would like to remind local residents that kerbside numbering outside their home is not a Council requirement, nor is it a service that Council provides. Council has received a number of calls from local residents who have been approached by a kerbside number painter claiming to work for Council. ‘If residents are approached by this person, they are not to approve for this person to undertake any painting of numbers on Council assets including kerbside gutters. This would require Council approval,’ said a Ballina Council spokesperson.

OS Garden Club The Ocean Shores and District Garden Club have been enjoying sharing photos of their home gardens and also Inspirational gardens, for the last 68 days. Every day they share photos, sometimes with a theme such as a favourite coffee spot in their garden, and sometimes something more random such as what members love about their garden. Around six photos per day are posted vi email and the posts are keeping members connected and sane. We would love new members to join us in the coming months and welcome a phone call to our president Margaret Keating on 0412 246 310 for more information on meeting and how to get involved.

Cancer transport Cancer Council NSW’s Transport to Treatment (T2T) is made up of a volunteer driving force. Many of those drivers were over 60, and T2T had to stand down 91 per cent of their drivers as COVID-19 struck. Putting a call out across the Northern Rivers for drivers that are not in a risk category they have been able to train 19 new drivers, and keep their service going. ‘Cancer never stops, not even for a global pandemic. We needed drivers desperately, or put simply; some cancer patients would not be able to access their life-saving treatment,’ said Northern NSW Community Lead, Caitlyn Feldmann. ‘We still have a need for three to five drivers in Ballina/Lismore, and five drivers in Tamworth, so if you’re in these areas, under the age of 60 and have some spare time you’d like to spend helping people in need, please reach out to your local Cancer Council office.’ If you would like to volunteer for, or donate to, Cancer Council NSW go to their website: cancercouncil.com.au.

US comedian Chris Rock’s observation that policing is a job on par with aeroplane pilots makes perfect sense. There’s no way a few ‘bad apples’ could become pilots. In the wake of the public murder of George Floyd by police in the US, the Democrats will introduce reform via the Justice in Policing Act. Yet presumptive Democrat nominee Joe Biden has, according to The Hill, rejected calls to defund US police departments and divert taxpayer money for social programs.

As COVID-19 restrictions ease, there’s a few places reopening after the lockdown. The Hotel Great Northern reopened last week, as did Byron Bay Cookie Co, Barrio and O’Meara Dental. The Bruns Hotel is also trading again. The Echo’s sales team say there is a buzz around Byron that hasn’t been there for a while. Here’s hoping the long weekend was prosperous while all were keeping a safe 1.5m distance. Q Q Q Q
