GENERAL INFORMATION
Director’s Statement J’aimee Skippon-Volke Festival Director
10 YEARS OF BBFF It’s ten years in and we’re still excited here at the Byron Bay Film Festival. These 10 years have seen BBFF go from 55 films to 185 and become a “go-to” film destination, as veteran actor Jack Thompson described it, and Australia’s “best” festival, according to others. Each year has brought a further sharpening of BBFF’s capacity to bring to you – our audience of Northern Rivers locals and cultural visitors – films to delight your senses, re-ignite your passions, challenge your prejudices and broaden your vision of the world. A dedicated team have worked hard to build this 10th festival in order to share the work of inspired creatives who, in turn, have worked hard to bring their vision and ideas to the big screen. It’s important to remember that change starts with an idea, it’s easy to let today’s political and environmental climate strip you of optimism and
belief in the basic good nature of our species. As always, many of the films we screen shine a light on the personal stories of those who walk their own path, or stand up for what they believe in. Some of our films share that message of hope, while others invite discussion of the importance of tolerance and to look beyond what you know, or what feels safe in order to experience understanding, or in some cases enlightenment. With an open mind the future is bright, or at the very least holds seeds of hope. My Co-Director, Osvaldo C. Alfaro, and I are excited to be able to share a new story-telling medium with Byron – Virtual Reality (VR). VR and what will come after unleashes an exciting world of infinite possibilities. Mention must be made of the passing in June of our long standing Patron Paul Cox. Paul heralded us through our first decade of growth, and for us,
he represented the fighting spirit of independent film and independent filmmakers, he was a passionate and insightful Filmmaker. Paul said of BBFF, “The true potential of the cinema can only be experienced when one has freedom of expression and finds an audience that’s not conditioned to constantly be entertained. This is an important festival and for those young people that screen here for the first time it can be a life-changing experience”. Whilst we bring the films and filmmakers to you, that is just part of the equation that makes a great festival. You, our audience, help create the unique feel of our event. We’re excited about what we can create over the next 10 years, as we continue to champion local talent and stories, Australia’s young filmmakers and to bring innovative technology, great films, filmmakers and creators to this amazing region.

BYRON BAY FILM FESTIVAL – FRIDAY 14 TO SUNDAY 23 OCTOBER 2016 5
GENERAL INFORMATION
TOUCH REALITY
Where the Art of Tech Comes to Life 22 and 23 October
Filmmaking has always sat at the cutting edge of innovation, design and exhibition. It is true collective endeavour which encapsulates a variety of team members and highlights their creative skills. Since BBFF2014 we have been introducing filmmakers to Virtual Reality and now we are thrilled to be able to share this medium with our audience members too. At this very special festival BBFF will activate discussion, investigation, incorporation and celebration of creative technology and, in particular, the rapidly growing immersive storytelling and creative opportunities created by Virtual and Augmented Reality. Most of the VR experiences and events on offer are free to BBFF Ticket Holders – see our website for more details.
This weekend gives the creative and the curious the opportunity to engage with and explore in Virtual Reality. Ncube8 provides filmmakers, creative practitioners and the general public the opportunity to engage with VR applications and hardware and to learn about other new enabling tools in order to explore the potential of this new medium. Ncube8 will introduce audiences and filmmakers to new frontiers of the storytelling and the artistic expression of tomorrow. We believe casting an experienced eye at creative opportunities of the future is just as important as acknowledging the filmmaking craft of the present and past.
Demos Using the latest VR tech, Ncube8 will allow festival attendees to experience some of the most innovative interactive virtual reality software demos available. Whether you are going on a spacewalk, painting with light or making music in a virtual studio you’ll be transported somewhere worlds away while never leaving the room. Just as BBFF brings you film premieres, we have a number of Virtual Reality experiences which are not yet for public release and which have never been to these shores before. We’ll make some of these experiences available throughout the festival in the lobby of the Community Centre and others will be exclusive to the ncube8 weekend or will need to be booked in advance. Experiences include:
Songlines 360° Float amongst the endless expanse of The Pleiades, behold the majestic scar trees, marvel at the Western Kimberly and the Wandjina as Rhoda Roberts AO, Head of Indigenous Programming at Sydney Opera and Festival Director of the unmissable local Boomerang Festival, guides you through ‘Songlines’.
I, Philip I, Philip is the first immersive short fiction piece to be developed in France. Shot in stereoscopic 3D you are taken inside the digital mind of one of the greatest writers of science-fiction of the 20th century - Philip K. Dick. Dick’s conspiracy and paranoia-driven stories inspired Blade Runner, Total Recall and Minority Report. His visionary imagination laid ground for our digitally-obsessed society. During the course of his life, he finally accepted that reality was nothing but a perfect illusion fooling his senses. What if his peers were robots? What if he was living in an alternate reality?
Home Home: A VR Spacewalk is a collaboration between the BBC and UK VR content specialists Rewind. It is a fully interactive, realtime rendered simulation of a spacewalk, where you are the astronaut that’s sent out to inspect damage to the ISS. You will get to feel what it’s like to be an astronaut floating 250 miles above earth with stunning and vast views of the spaceship, the space station and the universe.

Workshops – Learn from the best
Panels
Shooting in Cinematic VR
Our Ncube8 panels will widen perceptions of the evolution of art and of technology. Our speakers will examine the big picture of the symbolic relationship between technology and creativity as well as technology’s potential for social benefit. The panels include:
GoPro’s Media Guru Jordan Miller, a 360 pioneer, will run a workshop for filmmakers looking to understand or transition into working in immersive 360 VR. How does VR change the directorial process? Where do you put the camera? How do you stay out of shot? In answering these questions, you will find new and innovative shooting and storytelling practices.
360 Storytelling Oden Roberts, international filmmaker and producer, joins us from Los Angeles to discuss the growing narrative medium of VR. As a front-runner of VR technology he opens the conservation to pushing the limits of VR in regards to storytelling and the future of film production. He hopes to engage filmmakers in VR with its unique approach to narrative film.
Intelligent Design – the Flashpoint of Inspiration Conceptual art curtails time and cost blowouts later down the production timeline. It’s a cost-effective craft which filmmakers should be considering essential. This workshop will dive into creative processes which benefit filmmakers and anyone with a creative project.
Blurring the Lines Between Virtual and Reality In today’s rapidly advancing world we’re discovering new ways of interacting with the land of the digital. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality will, combined, be a $150 billion industry by 2020, so clearly exploration will reach many aspects of our lives. Could they possibly benefit our education, our research, our films, and even our existence?
Hosted by Dr Jordan Nguyen A decade ago Jordan Nguyen (ABC’s Becoming Superhuman) almost broke his neck in a diving accident. It changed the course of his life, leading him into a profession of making positive change for people with disability. He continues to create futuristic technologies and has ranked in the top 100 global influencers on Virtual Reality.
Ncube8 Artists In the lead-up to this event BBFF has been working with local artists from more traditional creative media and giving them access to VR tools in order to create new pieces in VR. The artists include: Mullumbimby’s Jack Packshaw, Main Arm Musician Danidoo Butterfly and Byron Bay’s Jess Lee Foote. These pieces are available to attendees to experience and will also be available online after the festival.

Best Documentary Nominee, Best Film Nominee Australia | 92 min | Dir: Aaron Petersen | Prod: Sarah Linton | Documentary | 2016 | Byron Premiere
Zach, aged 10, is a bright, friendly boy who loves his dad, Alec, and talks excitedly about his upcoming initiation ceremony, a cultural obligation for his tribe and a vital part of his Indigenous heritage. Zach yearns to be seen as a man in the eyes of tribal society and, more importantly, his father. As Zach enters adolescence and the pressures of his life mount, complications arise. Against the backdrop of Indigenous oppression, Zach’s teenage experimentation and his violent reactions to racism leads the troubled youth to some dark places. Alec knows that without a true connection to his culture, Zach is lost. It’s time for Zach to answer the call of his Elders, to take part in the ancient rite of passage and walk in the footsteps of his ancestors. Zach, aged 15, is neither the bright-eyed boy nor the angry teenager. He’s someone new, he’s a boy who may finally understand what it means to become a man. He goes on a journey of discovery into ancient traditions that date back thousands of years and have been passed down through the generations. But is Zach ready to take on the responsibility of his tribe and family, or will he seek the easier but temporary answers of the modern world? Is Zach really ready to take this next step and awaken the warrior within? Zach’s Ceremony is an extraordinary documentary captured over ten years that shows one boy’s journey to manhood in a complex, emotionally driven story. Its themes are universal: those of family and connection, but it also explores the fascinating and unique question of what it means to be a modern man belonging to the oldest living culture on Earth. Members of the Doomadgee Family will be in attendance

Like all good things, the 10th Byron Bay Film Festival must come to an end, with the closing night celebrations the last opportunity to reflect upon the ideas, the passion, the creative magic we shared during this 10-day extravaganza of film. This is a fully catered event as Republik once again draws upon the freshness of the region to create a delicious buffet.
Best Byron Film Nominee Australia | 90 min | Dir/Prod: Brendan Shoebridge | Documentary | 2016 | World Premiere
Made by Alstonville father Brendan Shoebridge, the film is primarily a celebration of the power of ordinary people to stand up to and defeat corporate forces intent on steamrolling community wishes. When the Northern Rivers community found their home being threatened by gasfield industrialisation, a critical mass of citizens from all walks of life responded to the call. Their deep love of the land led to a massive social movement and a historic showdown in Bentley, outside Lismore NSW. What happened in this once peaceful valley has now become the stuff of legend and is reverberating around the globe. Told through the eyes of the ‘Protectors’ over a five-year period, this feature documentary captures and celebrates what is described as the non-violent Eureka Stockade of our time. This is a film that will educate and entertain audiences in the struggle for effective democracy and a safe clean future. It aims to inspire hope in audiences globally and poses the question ‘what is truly valuable?’ Brendan Shoebridge will be in attendance

A black comedy set during the aftermath of the Cronulla riots, Down Under is the story of two carloads of hotheads from both sides of the fight destined to collide. Sincere, though misguided, intent gives way to farcical ineptitude as this hilarious, sometimes crass yet very poignant story of ignorance, fear and kebab-cravings unfolds, and what was meant to be a retaliation mission turns into something neither side could have imagined. Deliberately provocative and confronting racism head on, writer-director Abe Forsythe takes a balanced look at the ridiculous side of a serious subject.

Nearing their high school graduation, three undocumented Bronx teenagers navigate the difficulties of adolescence while living with the threat of being discovered by the authorities and their friends. Like most teenagers, all they want to do is hang with their friends, fall in love, and figure out where to go to college, but unlike their American classmates, these three live with the threat of being discovered by the authorities. When one of their teachers connects them with a lawyer to help them get their papers, the teens start to dig into their family histories to assist their immigration cases. As they continue to deal with the everyday problems of adolescence, the teenagers are forced to confront their past and, at the same time, fight for their future. An Audience Award winner at SXSW.

Acclaimed and controversial director of Bronson, Drive and Only God Forgives, Nicolas Winding Refn mixes glitter with gore in The Neon Demon. When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will use any means necessary to get what she has. The film stars Elle Fanning (Maleficent, Super 8), Jena Malone (Inherent Vice, The Hunger Games series), Bella Heathcote (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Dark Shadows), Abbey Lee (Gods of Egypt, Max Max: Fury Road), Karl Glusman (Love, Stonewall), Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix series), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men, Drive), Desmond Harrington (Dexter, The Dark Knight Rises), Alessandro Nivola (A Most Violent Year, American Hustle), and Charles Baker (Breaking Bad, Wild).
The story of a village caught in between life and death. The paths of a community, which wants to forget its past and the Stranger, who wants to grasp his past, converge. In a village where only a handful of people are left, the young have left and the babies cease to be born, where each moment seems to repeat a previous moment, the arrival of the Stranger is met with curiosity first, and suspicion later. The dark, covered memories of a bloodied wedding night are revived. Is this Stranger someone from the past, or a brand new hope...?
Nicole Kidman and Jason Bateman are Annie and Baxter Fang, the offspring and reluctant collaborators of Caleb and Camille Fang (Christopher Walken and Maryann Plunket). Celebrated and controversial performance artists, Caleb and Camille’s work put innocent bystanders in the midst of elaborate staged scenes that frequently featured their young children. When the elder Fangs go missing under mysterious circumstances, Annie is convinced it’s just another elaborate prank-cum-artpiece, while Baxter suspects something else might be afoot. In digging into the unraveling mystery, the siblings begin to unpack long-dormant and unresolved issues from their unorthodox childhoods. Based on the acclaimed best-selling novel by Kevin Wilson, adapted for the screen by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Davis LindsayAbaire and directed by Jason Bateman.

On his 30th birthday, Tom Fassaert receives a mysterious invitation from his 95-year-old grandmother Marianne to come visit her in South Africa.
From the makers of BBFF 2014’s smash hit Nordfor Sola (North of the Sun), three brothers set out on a very special trip together. Motivated by the classic surfer’s relentless quest for the perfect wave, they travel to the remote Norwegian island of Bjørnøya (Bear Island), lugging a surfboard, snowboard, paragliding and various other equipment. They transform the challenging nature of Bear Island into their own playground. The brothers find their ice-cold waves and precipitous slopes, but one must stay ashore, vigilant, poised, with a rifle should Bjørnøya’s natural predator, the Polar Bear, emerge.

At that time, the only thing he knows about her are the myths and predominantly negative stories his father told him. She was a femme fatale who went through countless men, a famous model in the 1950s, and a mother who put her two sons into a children’s home. Fassaert decides to accept her invitation. In the Chinese city of Yiwu, a vast market fills the shelves of the world’s discount chains with electric Santa dolls, copies of Kate Middleton’s engagement ring and ear-wrecking vuvuzelas. Meanwhile, day labourers gather by the thousands in a human market and children help make the zippers that might end up on your fake designer purse. But China is getting more expensive to live in, and its army of migrant workers require higher wages to make ends meet. Bulkland is an intimate look, from a locally raised director, at the people who labour to bring us cheap stuff, and a look at China in a historic moment. Daniel J Whelan will be in attendance

Fifty years after the iconic first Trip, Ken Kesey’s son Zane took the Furthur Bus – and his father’s legacy – back on the road, for its longest-running tour in history. Armed with a new band of Merry Pranksters, the Furthur bus rode into music festivals, community events, tribal gatherings and national landmarks, reestablishing itself as a symbol of radical selfexpression and cultural revolution all across the country. An on-the-ground account of how Ken Kesey, the Pranksters and the acid tests helped to generate a non-conformist society of free-thinkers, artists and altruists who are now pushing the evolutionary envelope of human potential.

Many know Bhutan as the last Himalayan Buddhist kingdom and the only country in the world to use Gross National Happiness as its primary yardstick for progress. Drawn by the allure of this enigmatic kingdom, four veteran athletes attempt an unprecedented humanpowered, border-to-border crossing of Bhutan, hoping to experience Bhutan’s policy of “GNH” first hand.
USA | 47 min | Dir/Prod: Matthew Jones | Documentary | 2015 | Aust Premiere
ExtraOrdinary looks at the persecution of skaters in the USA and follows seven young men for whom skating is a lifeline amongst the chaos of drugs, gangs and violence in the streets of Compton. In 1996, there were only 3 public skate parks in the entire country; skaters were, and still are, marginalised and treated as criminals. Ever since her own son was arrested for skating, skatepark activist Heidi has been on a mission to get skateparks built across America.
When the demands of the gruelling 32-day, 485-mile journey push the team beyond their breaking point, they must confront the challenge inherent in walking what Buddhists call the Middle Path – embracing the benefits of our fast-paced modern life while still honouring the ancient traditions and values that make Bhutan unique.

The challenges and triumphs of female big-wave surfers fighting sexism in the water, in competition, in the media and in the surf industry are shared by a closely knit community of like-minded women. This probing, incendiary and thought-provoking doc takes you inside a growing movement of women that are shattering the shallow and sexualised images of female surfers in the media. Including interviews with top female athletes and awe-inspiring big-wave surf footage filmed in the icy waters of Ocean Beach, San Francisco and Mavericks – one of the biggest waves on the planet – this film empowers a new generation of girls to live their dreams and overcome the challenges they face along the way.

Legendary master filmmaker Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Cave of Forgotten Dreams) examines the past, present and constantly evolving future of the internet in Lo & Behold: Reveries of the Connected World. Herzog conducts interviews with cyberspace pioneers and prophets such as PayPal and Tesla co-founder Elon Musk, internet protocol inventor Bob Kahn, and famed hacker Kevin Mitnick. These provocative conversations reveal the ways in which the online world has transformed how virtually everything in the real world works, from business to education, space travel to healthcare, and the very heart of how we conduct our personal relationships.

Meet the growers, the breeders, the smokers and spruikers who make up Australia’s cannabis culture.
Can a First Nation community survive in an urban environment? The Batchewana First Nations live in the Canadian mining city of Sault Ste Marie and on the shores of Lake Superior in Ontario. How do they survive as a culture when they feel invisible in the place that used to be theirs? How do they protect the land that they feel spiritually bound to protect when their ability to protect it is so diminished? ‘First Nations are not the problem. They are the solution to the problem’.
The Gauchos del Mar brothers perform an unprecedented expedition by foot with 35kg on their backs over 53 days on the easternmost tip of Tierra del Fuego province, a pristine area where no one lives.

Richard Baron’s rambunctious, intelligent and timely documentary about the history of the weed takes us to the country’s cannabis capital, Nimbin, where it is celebrated every year with the gleefully defiant MardiGrass, and beyond that, into the bush, where connoisseur horticulturalists lovingly raise their crops. Increasingly they are doing it to meet the demand for the medicinal varieties, and among footage of the dancing Ganja Faeries, bong-throwing contests and advocates on both sides come the quiet testimonies from the parents of terribly sick children whose lives have been improved.
The brothers have the goal of surfing a world-class wave never ridden before at the Cape San Diego lighthouse, the most easterly point. To get there they overcome harsh terrains, scarcity of food and harsh climate. With no communication whatsoever they document the region and decide to share their message of environmentalism, avoiding consumerism and living simply in order to protect Peninsula Mitre forever.

QUELLE MUSIQUE TU PARLES?
France | 80 min | Dir: Sébastien Roger De Nuñez, Richard Gerard | Prod: Sébastien Roger De Nuñez | Documentary | 2016 | World Premiere
Filmmaker Sébastien Roger De Nuñez discovers Argentina through its music. A country where music is more than just art, it’s a way of life. Although most of the people he meets don’t call themselves musicians they make music come alive. From Buenos Aires to the Andes, a simple dinner with friends to the carnival, a rodeo festival to indigenous ceremonies, Sebastian goes back to the roots of these traditions. Along the way, he discovers a connection to music as vital and natural as breathing. Sébastien Roger De Nuñez will be in attendance

Few things on Earth are as miraculous and vital as seeds, worshipped and treasured since the dawn of humankind. In the last century, 94 per cent of our seed varieties have disappeared. As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food. In a harrowing and heartening story, these reluctant heroes rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds. From the Director of Queen of the Sun: What are the Bees Telling Us? and The Real Dirt On Farmer John.

A documentary revealing the devastating impact of industrial and military ocean noise on whales and other marine life. Sonic Sea features several charismatic scientists, as well as musician and environmental activist, Sting, whose moving interview connects the sonic world of marine life with our sonic world on land. The film offers solutions (and, by extension, hope) for a quieter ocean, and underscores that the ocean’s destiny is inextricably bound with our own.

Over the past 16 years, an extraordinary group of musicians has come together to celebrate the universal power of music. Named for the ancient trade route linking Asia, Africa and Europe, The Silk Road Ensemble, an international collective created by acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, exemplifies music’s ability to blur geographical boundaries, blend disparate cultures and inspire hope for both artists and audiences. The film follows an ever-changing lineup of performers drawn from the ensemble’s more than 50 instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, arrangers, visual artists and storytellers as they gather in locations across the world, exploring the ways art can both preserve traditions and shape cultural evolution.

This spellbinding documentary follows Aisholpan, a 13-year-old nomadic Mongolian girl fighting to become an eagle hunter, a tradition that has been handed down from father to son for centuries. While there are many old Kazakh eagle hunters who vehemently reject the idea of any female taking part in their ancient tradition, Aisholpan’s father Nurgaiv believes that a girl can do anything a boy can, as long as she’s determined. An eagle can only have one master and the time has come for Aisholpan to capture an eagle of her own. The film traces Aisholpan’s personal journey while addressing universal themes such as female empowerment, the natural world, coming of age and the onset of modernity. Narrated by Daisy Ridley.

1971. The Los Angeles performance art scene was flourishing. Chris Burden ordered a studio assistant to shoot him in the left arm with a rifle, Barbara T Smith staged provocative interventions, and Paul McCarthy painted his naked body with mustard and ketchup in the name of art. And among them all, Bob Parks, an energetic young artist from the UK, lived with his beautiful and interesting wife, Myriam. Life was perfect, for a time. When Bob’s marriage fails, and Myriam leaves, things fall apart. Bob moved back to the UK to live with his parents. Planning to stay for only six months to finish a series of paintings and gather his thoughts, Bob stayed for thirty years…
A lyrical and spiritual journey of healing through art. Eric Nui Cabales, a body-painter, costume designer, photographer, and conceptual artist struggles to find new directions after the death of his father. Eric finds inspiration a patch of land owned by his forefathers; the place where the river meets the sea and where everything starts and comes to an end. Enlisting his wide circle of friends, Eric creates intricately painted living canvases and photographs them against the larger canvas of the lush surrounding landscapes. A visual and aural feast for the senses in the vein of Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi and Ron Fricke’s Baraka, The Landscape Within truly is the place where art becomes limitless.
A documentary about Terra Preta, Mars and Poo. Terra Preta is the most fertile soil on Earth and for a long time it was well hidden, a hermetic secret held by the tribes of the tropical rainforests of the Amazon which transforms meagre tropical soil with permanently fertile earth. This ancient process could enable the colonisation of Mars and the transformation of Earth’s own deserts. Just one question remains: Is there such a thing as useless shit?
Growing up isn’t easy, especially for Zach Doomadgee, an Aboriginal teen wanting to learn about his people’s ancient cultural practices and to take part in the modern city. His desire to go through initiation ceremonies is encouraged by his father, an elder and spokesman for his clan. The camera takes an intensely personal look at their sometimes fraught relationship and vividly celebrates the profound and joyful spiritual practices of their clan in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The dad, Alec, conceived the film to show the beauty of Aboriginal spirituality, which we see in rare and uplifting footage of the lore men and their ceremonies. Members of the Doomadgee Family will be in attendance
