BACK IN CONTENTION Alexandria’s Steve Herzog in familiar territory after scare for his life last year By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com he fact that Alexandria’s Steve Herzog finished as the medalist through qualifying in the Senior Division on Monday morning at the Resorters Golf Tournament comes as little surprise to anyone who has followed this event. Herzog has been there and done that in the Resorters. He figures he has played the tournament almost 40 times, and he has five championships — two in regular men’s, one in the Executive Division and two in the Senior Division. To see him shoot an even-par 72 at the Alexandria Golf Club on Monday was really par for the course for him, but Herzog and his family and friends might appreciate that round a little more than some of the others he has fired over the years. Herzog had a serious health scare that came right in the middle of the 2018 Resorters Tournament that almost cost him his life. He was playing in the matchplay portion of the championship flight. In fact, he was into the quarterfinals and playing really well before getting rushed to a hospital in Fargo with a blood disorder called Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, or TTP. “I didn’t really take it seriously because I had no suffering, but my platelet count was down to 2,000,” Herzog said on Monday after his qualifying round. “I was bruising all over. I was bleeding out. That

Thursday I had six birdies and shot 4-under, and I was airlifted six hours later.” TTP is extremely rare. The current rate of occurrence is about 3.7 cases per million people each year, and about two-thirds of those who have TTP are women. It’s not known was causes the disorder, but it is life threatening and considered a medical emergency. It occurs when the ADAMTS13 enzyme does not function as it should. This leads to small blood clots in the blood vessels, low platelet counts and the destruction of red blood cells. Herzog was in the backyard with friends and family the night before one of his rounds in the Resorters last summer when a friend who works in the medical field told him he needed to see a doctor due to the bruising he was experiencing. He golfed his round and was at the local hospital for an appointment at 5 p.m. By 6:30, they called him back into the emergency room and told him he needed to be rushed to either St. Cloud or Fargo. “I was lucky enough that the care up at Sanford in Fargo was tremendous,” Herzog said. “They put me on this plasma

Alexandria’s Steve Herzog tries to will his putt to the cup during a Thursday round in the 2018 Resorters. Herzog shot 4-under during his final round of last year’s tournament and then was rushed to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo with a life-threatening, rare blood disorder. He is back at this year’s Resorters and was the qualifying-round medalist in the Senior Division with an even-par 72 on Monday.

MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

Sigel continues solid play heading into Wednesday Bigger wins playoff for final spot By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Brian Choe of Coppell, Texas comes into Wednesday’s match-play portion of the Men’s Championship Division as the favorite until proven otherwise. Choe is the defending champion and automatic top seed, but this year’s field is filled with players who are Resorters veterans and seem capable of capturing their first men’s title. “There’s a lot of good players this year,” Deephaven’s Ben Sigel said. “Thomas (Lehman), Clay (Kucera) won the (Minnesota State Amateur), Lincoln (Johnson), Andrew Israelson — there’s a bunch more. All of us could win. Everyone has a chance. After my qualifying round, I should be in a good spot, but anyone can beat anyone once you get to this level.” Sigel is playing as well as anyone in the field right now. His summer included winning a qualifying tournament on July 22 for the U.S. Amateur Championship. He road that momentum right into two days of qualifying at the Resorters on Sunday and Tuesday as Sigel shot a two-day score of 137, good for 7-under par. He solidified his second seed in the tournament with a 3-under par 69 on day two. “It was solid. I had one mistake on seven when I hit it over in the hazard and made double there,” Sigel said. “Besides that, it was pretty simple — hit fairways, made a couple putts and took advantage of the par fives.” Sigel started with a birdie on No. 1 and worked around that double bogey on seven by birdying holes 11, 12, 14 and 18 on the back. He stuck his

As impressive as his Tuesday round was, his Sunday round was even better. Sigel shot 4-under that day, but it was the conditions he shot

that score in that made it stand out. Players in the entire field battled through a lightning delay and then soaking wet rains once they finally got back on the course. “It was just staying patient. Not forcing it or trying to get

anything up there too far,” Sigel said. “Playing from the fairway was a huge advantage that day. There’s a lot of wedges, so as long as you just hit the fairways, that’s the key. Staying dry was pretty much impossible, but I was

able to put together something.” Lehman (70), Kucera (70) and Andrew Lindberg (71) all joined Sigel in shooting under par through the rain that day.

Lehman finished his two days of qualifying at 4-under (140) and is the fourth seed in the field. Johnson, a sophomore in the Big Ten at the University of Minnesota this fall, had the low round on Tuesday at AGC with a 5-under par 67. He overcame three bogeys with eight birdies on Nos. 1, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 17. Alexandria’s Lukas Bigger got the final spot in the championship flight by winning a playoff. Bigger, Davis Johnson, Jared Lind, Tony Asta and Sam Rice all shot a 154 before Bigger grabbed that final spot. Sigel feels great about where his game is at going up against a talented field. “I love this course. I love to be here every year,” Sigel said.

“I’ve had a good summer so far, so I’m just excited to get match play going. My game feels good.” He’s been playing the Resorters Tournament since he was about 12 years old. Sigel has a junior title during his tenure in Alexandria. He has bided his time while growing up through the Men’s Championship Division since turning 16. Now the junior at the University of Kansas is hungry to try to capture another crown after a couple good rounds in qualifying. “It’s definitely a tournament that I want to win,” Sigel said. “I feel I haven’t played great here ever the last couple years, kind of underachieved. I made the semifinals a couple times, but I’m excited. I think this year is the best chance I’ve had with where my game is at.”

floor, so there are people in there getting chemo every day trying to stay alive, and I felt fine. Eight days there, and I felt fine, but I was bleeding out. It’s just a weird thing to get.” Herzog also had a scare with cancer 20 years ago, and he says he is fortunate to have family and a great community around him in Alexandria. TTP is a lifelong condition, so doctors continue to monitor Herzog in an attempt to catch any recurrences. “It’s just a strange

thing,” he said. “I had blood tests weekly for about six months. Then I went to monthly, and now I’m every six months, so I think I’m fine.” Herzog said he feels great heading into this week, and his golf game showed that during qualifying. His round included birdies on Nos. 3 and 15, with bogeys on No. 4 and 5 and pars through the rest of the round. “I putted and chipped pretty well,” he said. “It was just steady. I didn’t really expect to be low.

I expected there to be some lower scores today, but it was windy.” Herzog joins a lot of familiar faces at the top of the seedings in the Senior Division. Alexandria’s Chris Haugen is the top seed as the back-to-back defending champion, while Herzog went into match play on Tuesday seeded second. Curt Howard shot a 75 and Mark Lindberg and Jeff Pederson both carded a 76. There’s a lot of good players competing for a title, and Herzog is excited to be in that mix again after such a hectic week during the Resorters last year. He knows as well as anybody that it’s always

an open field as the tournament turns to match play. “It’s just a great week to be around here,” Herzog said. “The course is in such great shape, even after Sunday with all the rain we had. It was great (Monday).”

Hanson brings home medalist honors By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com The quarterfinals of the Junior 10-12 Division’s championship flight is set with Charlie Hanson of Morris heading into match play with the top seed. Hanson shot a 37 in his nine-hole qualifying round on Tuesday afternoon. He was steady from the getgo with seven straight pars before a bogey on No. 17 in a round that was played on the back nine. He made par on 18 to finish off the win. Carson Boe of Cottonwood and Carver Larson of Alexandria both shot 39 on Tuesday. Boe heads into match play as the second seed as he used pars on Nos. 10, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 18 to finish his day at 3-over. Larson’s round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-three 13th. The cut for the eight-person

championship flight was a 48. John Grimsrud of St. Paul and Henry Moen of Edina both shot that as Grimsrud takes the eighth seed into match play and Moen sits in the seventh spot. Joining them in the quarterfinals is Alexandria’s Ashton Sladek and Blake Scholl and Glenwood’s Zachary Guggisberg.

R8 Resorters 2019 | Saturday, July 27, 2019 WOMEN’S REGULAR

Arellano shoots even to earn second seed Stephanie Herzog looks for her second straight title By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Stephanie Herzog of Red Wing and the University of Iowa is going for her second Resorters Women’s Division title this week, and she will have a field full of current and former college golfers trying to knock her off. All 16 of the women’s entries into this field will play in the championship flight starting at 12:15 p.m. off the first tee on Wednesday. Herzog anchors the field in that top spot, but former Wichita State University player Alejandra Arellano of Wichita, Kan. positioned herself well as the second seed. Arellano shot an even-par 73 on Monday as the low qualifying round. “My tee shots were really good. I’m always concerned about my tee shots, but I hit them pretty good,” she said. “I think just being in the fairway was great because I usually feel pretty comfortable with my second shots. I wasn’t putting that good, but some putts went in.” Enough putts dropped to put Arellano two shots lower than Madison Herzog of Detroit Lakes and Alexandria’s Amanda Bigger, who both shot 75. Arellano shot 2-under on the front nine with birdies on Nos. 3 and 7. She added a birdie on 11 that helped her overcome bogeys on Nos. 13, 16 and 18. A lot of golfers who play this tournament comment on the

importance of controlling their driver at AGC due to the shorter length of the course. That was key for Arellano on Monday as she set herself up with solid approach opportunities all day. “Every time that I’m not comfortable with my driver, I don’t usually play that good,” she said. “If you’re in the fairway you have a good chance to score. That is key, and I don’t hit my driver on every hole. I have a hybrid I was hitting off the tee, and it’s a short course so you can get around it with that.” Arellano was maybe a little surprised with her round. She said she hasn’t been playing that much golf as of late coming into the tournament, so she did not know exactly how she would perform heading into qualifying. “I had a practice round and it didn’t go so well, so I went to the range afterwards,” Arellano said. “I remembered something I was doing a few weeks ago and just kind of got a good feeling. I had my fiance on the bag (Alec Heinen). He usually keeps me calm. Having him on the bag is always fun, but I don’t play as much as I used to. Everything just kind of clicked.” This is the fourth time Arellano has played the Resorters. She’s been a regular the last few years in the women’s championship flight, but has come up a little short in her quest for a title. Her hope is that ends this week, but it’s not her sole focus, even after a solid round on Monday. “I didn’t really have big expectations for myself, just because I haven’t really practiced and played much,” Arel-

We bought the tickets a few weeks ago. It was last minute, so I just wanted to have a good time. Then playing good the first day made me think, ‘Well, maybe I have a chance.’ I feel comfortable with

my game right now, so I think I have a good chance, but I just want to enjoy playing.”

Golf: A special honor

By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com The Resorters Golf Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club has long been about friends and family making this match-play tournament an annual event, and this year’s 98th Resorters honored a few regulars at AGC who have been a big part of that history. For the first time in Resorters history, the match-play portion of the tournament got started by having long-time participants from Alexandria in Gordy Anderson, Wayne Elton and Nancy Syverson hit a commemorative tee shot on Tuesday. “I think it’s great to add new things, and to highlight the history,” Syverson said leading up to the tournament. “I’ve always loved the Resorters. I don’t know why I’m the one being honored by this, but I appreciate it. I’m very honored. The Resorters have been a part of our lives since we moved here, and it’s just a wonderful event. It’s been the center of many new friendships.” Syverson has played in the Resorters about 15 years. She has won two titles during that stretch, but says her memories of the tournament stem

Longtime Alexandria Golf Club members and Resorters Tournament regulars Wayne Elton (left), Gordy Anderson and Nancy Syverson were honored on Tuesday as they kicked off the 2019 Resorters with a commemorative tee shot on the first box. from all the time she has spent on the course with friends and family. “All four of us in my family have played at times,” Syverson said. “It’s just been a good thing for our family and for meeting other families. When I say family, it also creates a family of friends. To me, that’s the neatest part of it.”

Elton and Syverson served as honorary starters for the 2019 tournament, while 98-year-old Anderson was asked to be the honorary chairman of this year’s event. “It meant a lot to me,” Anderson said. “Just the honor that has been shown to me makes me feel very humble. I’m very proud to represent

the Resorters in this way.” Anderson, a Word War II veteran, still plays frequently at AGC throughout the summer and has a history with the Resorters that reaches back to his first time playing in the event in 1963. At that time, he was a superintendent in the Le Sueur school system, so he had

Syverson, Elton, Anderson hold honorary positions at 98th Resorters to travel to play in the Resorters. Anderson neglected to make reservations for a place to stay that year, and everything was booked by the time he thought of it. He called a local resort to see if they had available space. “They had a campground and I had a 3-year-old daughter, so I brought my tent and we camped out so I could play in the Resorters,” Anderson said. “Now you get an idea how important it was for me.” Anderson credited the leadership of Alexandria’s Jerry Rose and the AGC board of directors for continuing to help the Resorters grow. It’s a tournament he has loved from the first time he ever played in it, so much so that he knew he wanted to retire in Alexandria when his career in education came to an end. “There was no question where I wanted to retire to because of my past playing in the Resorters for a number of years,” Anderson said. “I wanted to move here because of all the beautiful assets of this community.” Elton’s history at the Resorters runs nearly as deep as Anderson’s. He moved to Alexandria in 1964 and began playing

the tournament in 1965. “I think I only missed three times over the next 45 years,” Elton said. “Golf has been in my blood for a long time. When I got here, I knew the Resorters had a great tradition, a great history and I surely wanted to be a part of it. I started playing early and kept on going a long time.” Elton won a Masters Division championship in 2001 and an Executive Division title in 1987. “I remember the championships, but I actually remember what I did in the regular championship flight more than (the titles),” Elton said. “I made it eight times in a row. I never won anything. I got to the quarters a couple times, but those were some highlights for my golf life.” Many of the golfers who win a Resorters title will remember those runs years later, but they recall the relationships they built during this week just as fondly. Sunday was the start of a new week of memories made for players as almost 300 golfers take to the course at AGC this week for the 98th running of the Resorters.

Boraas earns top spot in 13-15 field By Jared Rubado jrubado@echopress.com Hannah Boraas won the Section 8AAA girls golf tournament for Alexandria Area High School as an eighth-grader this past spring season. Now her sights are set on winning a title in the Junior 13-15 Division at the Resorters. Boraas finished at the top of the field with her Monday qualifying score of 77. She finished with two birdies and 10 pars. Right behind her was Thomas Gogel from Kansas with his score of 76. He was able to save his two double bogeys with his four birdies. The girls play a par 73 round, while the boys play a par 72. Boraas was joined by four other AGC members in the field of 16. Her high school teammate, Aisling

O’Connor, shot an 82 to land in fifth place. Andrew Johnson finished in eighth with a score of 86. Bennett Olson was right behind Johnson in ninth place with his total of 87. Colton Cavers was the last Alexandria resident to sneak into bracket play with a score of 97. Boraas and Cavers went head-to-head in the first round of match play on Tuesday. Geneva’s Taeren Peterson qualified for the match-play portion of the tournament with a score of 88. It was enough to land him in 10th place.

By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com The Women’s Executive Division has been Jodi Sullivan’s and Betsy Aldrich’s field to lose the last couple years, and that’s how things set up again this week. Sullivan is the defending champion and automatic first seed after she edged Aldrich in last year’s championship match. That flipped the script from the outcome in 2017 when Aldrich brought home the title. Aldrich, the Resorters veteran from the Woodhill Country Club, was on her game again during Monday’s qualifying round. She shot a 2-under par 71, well in front of third seed Pam Marlow with an 82. Aldrich used birdies on holes two, three and nine to shoot 2-under on the front. Her back nine included birdies on Nos. 14 and 15, with her only blemishes coming with

No easing into things Johnson’s first match is against a six-time champ as he tries to defend his title By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Randy Johnson of Alexandria waited a long time to capture his first championship at the Resorters when he won the 2018 Masters Division title. He won’t get to ease into things as he tries to defend his crown in the division. Johnson automatically earned the top seed in the championship flight as the defending champ, and he will get a six-time Resorters winner as the 16th seed in his opening round of match play. George Cliff of Mankato earned the final spot in the championship flight of the Masters Division by shooting an 84 on Monday. “I’ve played against George a few other times in the tournament,” Johnson said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever beat him. I don’t think so, so when he was playing yesterday he got up and down maybe seven, eight times for par. He’s just got a really good short game, so I know I’ll have my hands full.” The low qualifier in the Masters Division was another familiar name. Norty Blanchard of Alexandria shot a 3-over par 75 on Monday. His round had 15 pars in it, with his only blemishes coming on Nos. 3, 15 and 18 with bogeys. Tom Ryan of Minnetonka enters Wednesday’s matchplay portion of the tournament as the third seed after shooting a 77 in qualifying. Alexandria’s Dave Battey and Ray Sauer of St. Cloud each shot a 78 to round out the top five seeds.

Alexandria’s Randy Johnson hits from just off the green during the 2018 Resorters Tournament. Johnson will try to win a second straight Masters Division title, but he has a six-time Resorters champ in George Cliff standing in his way in the match-play opener.

“All 16 are very capable of winning this thing,” Johnson said of the field. “There’s no easy bracket, so you just hope you keep the ball between the trees and in the short grass and that your putter is working. If you can get pars in our division, pars usually don’t lose. That’s the goal.” Johnson said he is playing about as well as he has all summer during his last few rounds since coming back from his winter home in Florida. “I had a good season down there, but there’s a lot of rough and grass here,” he said. “We don’t have as many trees in Florida. We have water, and I manage to stay out of that most of the time, so I score better down there. Now I’ve had a few rounds in the mid70’s here, so I feel like that’s where it needs to be.” Even so, he knows that this tournament is anyone’s to win and that being the defending champion doesn’t guarantee him anything starting Wednesday. “I’m not taking anything for granted,” Johnson said. “I’m enjoying every minute of everything and just glad I can go out there and compete. The best man who has his game going will win, and if I can put it together, I can put it together. We’ll see what happens, but I’m not looking past George, I’ll tell you that. He is a very experienced tournament player and nothing rattles him. It will be a battle.”

R20 Resorters 2019 | Wednesday, July 31, 2019 JUNIOR 13-15

Boraas and Gogel thrive; Stennes upsets O’Connor By Jared Rubado jrubado@echopress.com The Junior 13-15 Championship flight kicked off on Tuesday afternoon after the 20-player field dwindled to 16 on Monday. After impressive qualifying rounds, Hannah Boraas and Thomas Gogel finished as the division’s top seeds. With no defending champion in the field, they emerged as the two favorites to win the division. However, with five golfers finishing within five strokes of first place in the qualifying rounds, the title is up for grabs. Here is a look at how all of the matches played out on Tuesday.

Boraas def. Cavers 5-4

The field’s top-seed had no problem advancing through the first round of match play. After an even first hole, Boraas won four of five holes to go up four heading to the seventh tee box. Colton Cavers, the 16th seed, was able to cut the lead to three before Boraas capped off an impressive front nine with a par to regain a four-hole lead. After Cavers won the 11th hole, Boraas sealed the win with a birdie and a par on holes 13 and 14. A par on the par-five 15th hole clinched a spot in the round of eight on Wednesday.

Olsen def. Johnson 3-2

Bennett Olsen was able to

pull away from Andrew Johnson on the back nine and advance to play against Boraas on Wednesday. After 13 holes of squared golf, Olsen, the ninth seed, took down the eight seed by shooting three pars on holes 14-16. The matchup saw five lead changes in 16 holes before Olsen was able to come out on top. Despite the loss, Johnson shot a 42 on the front nine – one stroke less than Bennett. Olsen’s victory advances him to a matchup with top-seeded Boraas in the quarterfinals.

Moen def. Sullivan in playoff

Fourth-seeded Charlie Moen had a scare in his first-round matchup with 13-seed Mckenzee Sullivan. Through the first seven holes, it looked as if the Junior 13-15 division would have its first upset. Sullivan capitalized on two bogies and took a three-hole lead. Moen was able to even the score by winning holes 8-10. With eight holes left to play, the score was even. A messy par-three 13th hole put Sullivan up one. Despite her double bogey, Moen had a forgettable hole with his score of six. However, he was able to rebound quickly and par the 14th hole to even the score again. Moen recorded his first

birdie of the contest on the 16th hole. In her final chance to even the score, Sullivan forced a playoff with a par on the 18th hole. The upset would not be completed as Moen won in extra holes.

Stennes def. O’Connor 3-1

Zach Stennes was able to pull off the first upset in the Junior 13-15 division on Tuesday. The 12-seed defeated fifth seed Aisling O’Connor 3-1 and advanced to the next round. It started with a birdie on the first hole and he never looked back. Stennes led all 17 holes that were played. Despite falling in the first round, O’Connor’s day was highlighted with an eagle on hole 11. It was a shot that would cut Stennes’ lead to one. However, she could not even the score as Stennes picked up the win. Stennes’ win earned him a matchup with Moen on Wednesday.

After shooting an even 36 on the front, Gogel kept his momentum going with a birdie on hole 10. He recorded his fourth birdie of the day on hole 12 to open up a five-hole advantage. Despite being down five holes with six to play, Wanous mounted a comeback. He was able to take advantage of Gogel’s four straight bogeys and get his deficit down to two. It was too little, too late as Gogel was able to par the 16th hole and advance.

Gogel def. Wanous 3-1

Peterson def. O’Hara 2-1

Second-seeded Thomas Gogel had one of the more impressive first-round performances in his division. Two birdies through eight holes put hip up four on Tyler Wanous, the 15th seed. Wanous was able to cut his deficit to three with a birdie of his own to end the front nine.

Jared Rubado Echo Press

In one of the more tightly contested matchups in this division, Taeten Peterson held off Connor O’Hara in a 2-1 final. Peterson, the 10th-seed, led in five of the first nine holes but was unable to pull away from O’Hara, the seven-seed. The score was even heading to the back nine when Peterson

was able to record a par and a birdie and take a two-hole advantage. O’Hara bounced back and won holes 12 and 13 to even the score. Both players had a bogey on 14 before Peterson regained the lead on 15. After an even 16th, Peterson’s par on 17 was good enough to send him to the round of eight. He is set to face Gogel in the quarterfinals.

Werschay def. Bloedorn 3-2

Leo Werschay was given a run for his money in the 3-14 matchup. After a birdie on the first hole, Werschay found himself down one against Zach Bloedorn, who had aspirations of an upset. Werschay regained the lead with pars on holes four and five before Bloedorn’s birdie

MEN’S EXECS

Eric Morken / Echo Press

Geoff Klein of St. Peter lines up a putt during the 2016 Resorters, the last time he played in this tournament. Klein was in the Men’s Division then, but is in his first year golfing in the Men’s Executive Division this week. He shot a 1-under par 71 in qualifying on Monday to take the second seed into match play on Wednesday behind defending champion Troy Johnson.

Klein sets himself up well through qualifying Strong field turns to match play Wednesday By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Geoff Klein of St. Peter and the LeSuer Golf Club has made some strong runs through the Men’s Division in prior years at the Resorters Golf Tournament only to come up a little short of a championship. He hopes to get over that hump during his first time playing in the Men’s Executive Division this week. Klein was on his game during qualifying on Monday as he finished as the lone golfer in the division to shoot under par. His 71 sets him up as the second seed in the bracket, with Troy Johnson of Maple Grove solidifying that top seed as the defending champion. “I was in the fairway a lot, and drove the ball well,” Klein said of his round on Monday. “I had a lot of good wedge looks into the green and was hitting those pretty close, so I had a lot of makeable birdie putts. I actually didn’t make as many putts as I would have liked to make. It was just kind of a steady round.” Klein’s only blemish came on No. 7 with a bogey. He erased that with birdies on Nos. 12 and 16 and methodically put together par after par throughout the rest of his day.

The Men’s Executive Division saw a cut of 86 into the championship flight as Darryl Wills of Chaska got the 32nd seed and the right to face Johnson in his opening match. For Klein, his round on Monday was about what he has come to expect out of himself while playing the Alexandria Golf Club over the years. “I’ve had some good tournaments this summer. I’ve had a couple not as good as I’d like,” he said. “I always feel like when I come back to Alex that I play the course really well. It’s always manicured great. It feels like it’s my second home course, so I always feel pretty confident on the course.” Klein’s first time coming to the Resorters stems back to about 1996, but he didn’t play the last two years. An injury kept him out of the field in 2017 and a busy schedule with young kids kept him from playing in 2018. His run through the Men’s Division included a couple trips to the semifinals. Earning a title by the end of the week would be a longawaited prize for him, but it’s not the sole focus as the tournament turns to match play when the Executive Division tees off from the 10th box at 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday. “A championship would be great, but I want to just play as well as I can,” Klein

said. “I’m happy I can be playing. I had an elbow injury and am still kind of working with that, so I’m just happy to be playing, really. I like to compete and if I could win something too that would be a lot of fun. I’d like to be in that position where you’re feeling the nerves. Seeing how you can do under those conditions is really fun.” Klein expects a good run this week, but he knows it won’t be easy. In addition to Johnson being back as the defending champ, multiple-time champion Daryl Schomer is near the top of the field again after shooting a 73 on Monday. JT Johnson of Eden Prairie was at evenpar with a 72. Chad Bisson shot a 74 in qualifying and Jeff Johnson and Andy Petersen both shot 75. They’re part of a competitive field from top to bottom in the Men’s Executive Division. “Troy Johnson is one of the best players in the state,” Klein said. “JT Johnson, who I played with today, is a good friend of mine and he is a good stick. There’s obviously Daryl who has won it a lot of times, but I expect to win, really. Certainly you’re going to have to play good golf to get by any of those guys. They can all play really well.”

R24 Resorters 2019 | Wednesday, July 31, 2019 SENIOR MEN

Three champs roll on; two bow out By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com Three past Senior Men’s champions rolled ahead in the opening round of match play in the Resorters tournament Tuesday – Steve Herzog and Chris Haugen, both of Alexandria, and Greg Mattson of Becker. But two other former champs encountered some stiff competition. A.J. Kluver of Alexandria, the 2015 trophy winner, was edged 2-1 by another Alexandrian, Larry Novotny, and the 2014 champion, Jeff Pederson of Haymarket, VA, was knocked out of contention by Pete Passolt of Wayzata, the 1989 Men’s Division champion, after 22 grueling holes. The first round of match play featured a few blowouts but there were also a lot of nail-biters – 12 matches lasted at least 16 holes and three of those went into extra holes. Second-round matches in the Senior Men’s Championship Division start at 8:48 a.m. Wednesday from the No. 1 tee. Here’s a look back at Tuesday’s action.

Haugen def. Stewart, 6-5

Defending champion Haugen breezed past Tim Stewart of St. Paul by playing nearly flawless golf, winning Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 with two birdies and seven pars to take a 7-up lead at the turn. Stewart matched Haugen’s par on No. 10 and took No. 11 with a birdie but it was too little, too late. Haugen matched Stewart’s birdie on the par-5 12th and both golfers bogeyed No. 13, which put an early end to the match. On the day, Haugen was 2-under.

Erickson def. Klick, 4-3

In a battle between Alexandrians, Joe Klick was clicking right along against Craig Erickson. He won the first hole with a birdie, lost the next one when Erickson carded a par, but regained the lead with a par on No. 3 and held tough by halving No. 4. The match tightened when Erickson won the 5th hole with a par and took his first lead with another par on No. 6. Both golfers closed out the front with bogey, par, bogey, leaving Erickson’s 1-up lead intact. Erickson came on strong on the back nine, taking the next four holes with bogey, par, birdie, par to go 5-up. Klick stopped the bleeding with a par win on No. 14 but he could only match Erickson’s bogey on No. 15, which ended the match.

Davis def. Dilley, 3-2

Matt Davis of Woodbury fended off a late charge from St. Cloud’s Dave Dilley to win a 16-hole dogfight. Dilley took the first hole with par but Davis tied it with a par win on the next hole. After halving the next two holes with bogeys, Davis surged ahead with a bogey on No. 5. After halving the next three holes with nothing but pars, Davis’ par took No. 9 and gave him a two-hole cushion at the turn. The close contest continued on the back nine when both golfers made par and birdie on No. 10 and 11. After that, Dilley made his move, winning Nos. 12 and 13 with birdie,

Davis wasn’t about to let the match slip away, however. He strung together three straight par wins on Nos. 14, 15 and 16 to secure a 3-2 victory.

Woodhull made the match interesting by stringing together three straight wins on Nos. 14, 15 and 16 with pars, but Howard matched Woodhull’s par on the 17th green to nail down the win.

Hagen def. Abrahamson, 2-1

Vanyo def. White, 3-2

A slow start doomed Tom Abrahamson of Wayzata in his match against Al Hagen of Harrisburg, SD. Hagen won three holes on the front nine, Nos. 1 (bogey), 6 (birdie) and 7 (par) before Abrahamson took his first hole, a par on No. 8. From there, neither golfer gave an inch as they halved the next five holes before Hagen finally broke the ice with a birdie on the par-5 14th to go 3-up. Abrahamson rallied with a par on the next hole to get within two but could only match Hagen’s bogey on No. 16 and his par on No. 17, which ended the contest.

Howard def. Woodhull, 2-1

Curt Howard of Bristow, OK sizzled on the front nine, prompting his opponent, Duncan Woodhull of Minnetonka to give him a nickname for how he was drilling his drives right down the middle of the fairway – “automatic man.” Howard was 1-under-par on the front, which helped him win five holes, Nos. 2 (birdie), 3 (bogey), 7 (birdie), 8 (birdie) and 9 (par). Woodhull finally broke through with a par win on No. 10 but Howard answered with a par win on No. 12 to go back to 5-up.

Rick Vanyo of Circle Pines jumped out to an early lead against Mike White of Maple Grove and never looked back. Vanyo won the first four holes with three pars and a birdie before White answered with a par win on the 5th hole. White whittled the lead to two by making par on No. 7 but his double-bogey on No. 9 put Vanyo 3-up at the turn. After Vanyo took No. 10 with par, White won No. 11 with bogey to draw within three but it proved to be his last hurrah. Vanyo matched him stroke-for-stroke on the next five holes to seal the win.

Lindberg def. Cummings, 6-5

Mark Lindberg of Coppell, TX, showed why he was the 2002 and 2003 Men’s Division champion, with a solid opening round performance that gave him a big win over Steve Cummings of Alexandria. Lindberg won the first four holes with a birdie and three straight pars before Cummings responded with a par win on No. 5. After halving No. 6 with pars, Lindberg won the next three holes with two pars and a birdie to take a

Herzog stormed back by winning the next four holes with two birdies and two pars to steal the lead at the turn. After matching pars on Nos. 10 and 11, Morgan knotted the match with a par on No. 12, moved back into the lead with a par on No. 13 and went 2-up with a par on No. 14. Herzog again battled back by winning the next hole with par but could only match Morgan’s bogey, par, par on the final three holes, which preserved Morgan’s 1-up win.

commanding six-hole lead. The match ended three holes later.

Morgan def. M. Herzog, 1-up

Kevin Morgan of Hood River, OR defeated Mike Herzog of Detroit Lakes but it took 18 holes to do it. Morgan built a three-hole lead on the front, thanks to wins on Nos. 1, 4 and 5 but

S. Herzog def. LaFave, 6-4

Steve Herzog of Alexandria, a two-time champion in the division who also holds titles in the Men’s Division and Executive Men’s Division, didn’t waste much time against Joe LaFave of St. Paul. Herzog won five holes on the front – Nos. 2 (bogey), 4 (bogey), 5 (par), 6 (birdie) and 7 (par) – while LaFave managed to win just one hole, a par on No. 9 and trailed by four at the turn.

Herzog won No. 11 with a par, matched LaFave’s par and bogey on the next two holes and ended the match with a par win on No. 14.

Heimsness def. Williams in 20 holes

In a roller coaster of a match, Eric Heimsness of Woodbury outlasted Opie Williams of Byron after two extra holes. Williams had the edge in the early going. He won five holes on the front while Heimsness won three.

R25

Heimsness won No. 11 to get within one but Williams won No. 13 with par to go back to 2-up. Heimsness then won three straight holes with solid pars to steal the lead. Both golfers ran into bogey trouble on the short 17th hole, setting up a do-or-die situation for Williams on the 18th. Williams delivered, notching a birdie to send the match into overtime.

the match even at the turn. Adams regained the lead with a birdie on No. 11 but Mattson came right back with a par win on the next hole to draw even. Adams didn’t cave, winning Nos. 13 and 14 with pars to go 2-up. Mattson pulled off a comeback by winning the next two holes with pars and matched Adams’ par on No. 18 to send the match to extra holes. On No. 1, Adams second shot fell short of the green and he could only make bogey while Matson two-putted for par to take the match. For the day, Mattson was 2-over-par while Adams was 3-over.

From Page 25

After they both parred No. 1, Heimsness hit his drive on No. 2 about 20 yards from the green and made par while Williams just missed his chip-in par.

Gardiner def. Peterson, 3-2

John Gardiner of Deephaven never lost the lead against Eric Peterson of Benson. Gardiner won No. 1 with birdie but Peterson squared the match with a par win on No. 5. Gardiner reclaimed the lead with a par on No. 7 and then closed out the front nine with par wins on Nos. 8 and 9 to go 3-up. Gardiner kept the pressure on from there, winning Nos. 10 (birdie) and 12 (par) to go 5-up. Peterson took the 14th hole with par but the match ended two holes later.

Johnson def. Freeman, 1-up

Eidsvold def. Callahan, 1-up

Brian Eidsvold of Alexandria didn’t take the lead until the 13th hole against Resorters newcomer Patrick Callahan of Mahtomedi but came away with a hard-fought win. Callahan prevailed early on, taking two holes on the front, Nos. 4 with par and 6 with birdie. He held the twohole cushion until Eidsvold struck for a par win on the 9th hole. Eidsvold got back to even with a par win on No. 11 and moved into the lead with a birdie on No. 13. Callahan answered with a par win on No. 15 to tie the match but Eidsvold made a clutch par on No. 16 to regain the lead. Both men bogeyed No. 17 and parred No. 18, which gave Eidsvold a 1-up victory.

Mattson def. Adams in 19 holes

Mattson, the division’s 2016 champion, survived a 19-hole white-knuckler against David Adams of Maple Grove.

Al Edenloff / Echo Press

Steve Herzog of Alexandria follows his tee shot down the No. 6 fairway Tuesday in his opening round match in the Senior Men’s Division Championship.

“No one was more than 2-up the whole way,” Mattson said after the match. “And I was two down with four holes to go.” The match was extremely tight from the get-go. Both golfers won just two holes on the front – Adams with Nos. 1 (birdie) and 5 (par) and Mattson with Nos. 3 (par) and 9 (par), which made

Tom Johnson of Maple Grove fought Bill Freeman of Alexandria hole after hole before finally stealing the lead for good on No.16 and hanging tough on the final two holes. Freeman jumped out to an early lead, taking the first two holes with birdie, par but Johnson came back, winning Nos. 3, 5 and 6 with pars to take the lead. It didn’t last long. Freeman took the next hole with par and matched Johnson’s par on the next three holes. Johnson took the lead for a second time with a birdie on No. 11 but Freeman again rallied with par wins on No. 13 and 14 to go out front again. Johnson won the next two holes with pars to take the lead for the third time, which proved to be the charm. He matched Freeman’s pars on the final two holes to preserve a 1-up victory.

Passolt def. Pederson in 22 holes

In the division’s longest match, Passolt showed the moxie that earned him the Resorters Men’s Division title back in 1989. He stood toe-to-toe with Ped-

erson, the Senior Men’s 2014 champion, through 22 holes before finally earning the win. “I was able to get up and down from the right side of the green while he three-putted from about 40 feet,” said Passolt, who is competing in the Resorters for the first time since 2013. “It was a close match all the way. Neither of us was more than 1-up.” Passolt wasn’t even sure he would be able to play the match. He was in urgent care on Monday and treated for back spasms but recovered in time. The match bounced back and forth. On the front nine, Pederson won Nos. 2 and 7 but Passolt matched that by winning Nos. 3 and 5. Passolt took the 10th hole to surge ahead but Pederson roared back with birdie wins on Nos. 11 and 12. Passolt tied the match with a par on No. 13 and took the lead for the third time with a par on No. 15. Pederson tied it with a birdie on No. 16 but Passolt moved ahead again with a par on the next hole. Pederson’s clutch birdie on No. 18 sent the match into sudden death where Passolt prevailed.

Novotny def. Kluver, 2-1

Birdies on Nos. 1 and 4, along with an eagle on No. 6 and a par win on No. 7, helped Novotny to a strong start against Kluver. But this would be no blowout. Kluver won two holes on the front, pars on Nos. 5 and 8, and trailed by just two at the turn. Kluver drew to within one with a par on No. 10. Novotny responded with another birdie on No. 12 to go 2-up and added yet another birdie win on No. 14. Kluver got back into the match with a par on No. 15 but could only match Novotny’s pars on the next two holes, giving Novotny a 2-1 win.
