A sample one-day lesson using "Holidays/Travel" as the topic, aimed at distinguishing between several types of future expressions at the Intermediate level, creating and explaining "plans" using future expressions, and practicing future expressions in different situations. New English knowledge is progressively linked to conversation.
Warm-up
• Do you have any plans this weekend?
• What do you think the weather will be like?
(What are your plans for this weekend? / What do you think the weather will be like?)
Naturally review "future expressions" you can use now while chatting with classmates
Dig deeper into the points
• Why do you think Alain is using "I'll" instead of "I am going to"?
(Why do you think Alain said "I'll" instead of "I am going to"?)
Review the full text of everyone's conversation in the model dialogue.
Within that, confirm again where and how "future expressions" are used, think about the reasons, and discuss them.
Understanding today's topic
• What do you know about this city?
• When choosing a holiday, what is most important?
(Do you know about this city? What matters most when choosing a travel destination?)
Look at the textbook photos Discuss holiday destinations around the world. Who in the class could you imagine traveling with? Discuss preferred types of accommodations, activities you'd like to do, etc.
To help you notice and correct mistakes yourself
• I go to the shops. Do you want anything?
• Ignore him. He's just being silly.
Is this sentence correct? Discuss why, and if not, try correcting it to the right usage.
This skill will also help when you're speaking and think, "Hmm? Something feels off?"
Listen to the model conversation
Ask Alan, Jenny, and Leanne from the textbook about their holiday plans this year.
This conversation is actually packed with the "future expressions" that are the focus of today's lesson, holiday-related vocabulary, and pronunciation points you'll want to practice
I will..→ I’ll..
Get used to native-like abbreviated pronunciation and try using it yourself
Practice what you've learned in conversation
"My Holiday Plans for This Year"
Form groups of three. While two partners converse, the third observes whether they use what they learned today. After the pair finishes, give feedback on what you noticed.
Switch roles and practice conversations using what everyone learned today. The teacher will also provide feedback on everyone's conversations.
In EC classes, more than half of the class time is dedicated to 'speaking practice'.
(This may vary depending on level and course.)
Think about today's key points
Discuss the differences between the various "future expressions" that came up in conversation.
• Which expression seems most likely to happen?
• Which one seems less likely to happen?
• Which one feels more like an obligation than a plan?
• How do you express the opposite meaning?
Practice in daily life and homework
"Future expressions" are useful beyond holiday plans, of course. Discuss when you might use them in daily life.
For homework, write an essay about "My Plans" using different themes like work, study, or daily life. Don't forget to use the expressions you learned!
In EC classes, thinking for yourself is crucial. English you "learned" from someone else may be forgotten, but English you "figured out" yourself, stays with you. Then, through repeated output, you make it truly your own.
The basic 20-lesson weekly curriculum is well-balanced, but in reality, weaknesses vary: some understand grammar but struggle with conversation, while others find conversation difficult because their listening is weak…. For such cases, add specialized skill classes. Balancing your own English abilities builds greater confidence in your English communication skills.
It's often hard to recognize your own true weaknesses. We recommend consulting with the school about which classes are necessary for your English improvement. You can also switch to other skill-focused classes midway through your studies.
