“Toplantagarden istobelieve intomorrow.”
We hope you are well. With summer on the horizon, we are energized by the season ahead and excited for all we will achieve together at Erie FCU in the year ahead. As you make your way through your spring cleaning checklist, we invite you to add a brief financial review—an easy step toward keeping your accounts secure and enjoying greater peace of mind.
This year, Erie Federal Credit Union marks a profound milestone: nine decades of principled stewardship in service to our members. The journey traces back to 1934, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act, laying the foundation for the federal credit union system. Erie Federal Credit Union was born on June 13, 1936—just seven years following the stock market crash of October 1929 that gave rise to the Great Depression. Our institution was founded upon a simple promise: to provide fair and equitable credit and promote thrift through a member owned, not-for-profit, financial cooperative to the benefit of its members.
The credit union’s story began when ten visionary educators gathered at the Ford Hotel to charter a solution for themselves, their families, and their colleagues. Starting with an initial collection of just $50, these founders established the Erie School Employees Federal Credit Union. In its earliest days, the cooperative was a modest collective of only 46 members, with $241 in total deposits. The credit union’s first official headquarters was a humble room on the second floor of the Public Library located at 27 South Park Row, shared with the Erie School District.
Guided by a deep commitment to the “people helping people” philosophy, these original founders laid the foundation for today’s Erie Federal Credit Union:
• F.S. Anderson
• Henry W. Reiman
• JoAnna Connell – A legendary Erie English teacher who served for more than 43 years; JoAnna Connell Elementary School was named in her honor in 1958.
• Ellen F. Connell
• Rose I. Sabatino
• Anna M. Quirk
• W.J. Cassidy
• B.C. Gustafson
• Paul Glazert
• Beatrice Farrell

We are grateful to each for their vision and foresight in laying the initial foundation of our organization.
From its unassuming beginnings, Erie FCU has evolved into Northwestern Pennsylvania’s largest credit union. To meet the evolving demands of a modern era, the institution has embraced technological growth, ensuring its digital experience matches the strength of its physical branches. This shared commitment to progress extends across our entire staff—from our front-line and back-office teams to leadership and the Board of Directors—all dedicated to supporting members through every stage of life. These advancements are thoughtfully designed to support our rapidly growing consumer and business membership, delivering sophisticated tools alongside personalized guidance necessary for modern financial success.
As we continue to modernize, Erie FCU remains firmly rooted in the founding philosophy of “people helping people.” As Erie FCU celebrates 90 years of service, it stands as a strong and trusted financial institution, serving over 80,000 members with assets surpassing $810 million. Deeply rooted in Erie and Crawford Counties, the credit union’s unwavering commitment to community is further reflected through its #TeamAOK (Acts of Kindness) volunteer program, with employees contributing thousands of hours annually to local organizations.
Your credit union is more than a traditional financial institution; it is an active partner in securing the dreams of families, guiding new homeowners, and standing as a steadfast ally to the community it has proudly served since 1936.
Thank you for choosing Erie FCU and allowing us to be part of your financial journey.
Wishing you a successful and refreshing spring,

Brian J. Waugaman, CEO

Simply put, a HELOC is a loan against the equity you have built up in your home. It differs from a traditional home equity loan because it offers a revolving line of credit. Like the available balance on your credit card, you can use the full amount of your HELOC or borrow against it in smaller increments, and you will pay interest only on the amount you borrow.
If you are looking for a smart way to get the money you need, a HELOC might be right for you. It offers the flexibility of easy access to your money with the security of a low rate. And because a HELOC is secured by the equity in your home, the interest you pay might be tax-deductible.
A HELOC is also a great alternative to high-rate credit cards. These versatile loans can be used for just about anything, from consolidating high-interest debt and tackling home improvements to financing a college education or paying for your child’s braces. You’ll get the money you need at an affordable rate with payments that are right for you.
For more information about how a HELOC can benefit you, visit www.eriefcu.org/borrow/loans-credit/home-equity-options or stop by today!

Phishing is a type of online scam designed to get valuable personal data from you – like your Social Security number, credit card numbers, passwords, account data and other personal identifying information.
Every day, scammers send out millions of fraudulent emails that claim to come from websites you likely trust, like a bank or credit card company, and then request your personal information. They then steal your personal information, leaving you the victim of a phishing scam.
Watch out for these phrases that help identify fraudulent emails:
• “Verify your account.”
Any legitimate business will not ask you to send passwords, login names, Social Security numbers or any other personal information via email.
• “If you don’t respond within 48 hours, your account will be closed.” They are attempting to create a sense of urgency so you feel like you don’t have time to verify their information through the proper channels.
• “Dear Valued Customer.”
Phishing messages are generally sent out as mass emails and aren’t personalized.
• “Click the link below to gain access to your account.”
The website address looks real, but if you hold your cursor over it, you’ll see a new website address pop up that looks nothing like the original. This is the “real” site you are going to.
Protect yourself. The FTC recommends the following tips:
• Do not hit “reply.” Contact the company or agency cited in the email directly by telephone or visit their website.
• Review statements ASAP. Review your credit card and account statements for invalid charges. If the statement is noticeably late, call your credit card company or ErieFCU to confirm billing address and account balances.
• Report “phishy” emails to the FTC. Forward suspicious emails to uce@ftc.gov. If you believe you are a victim of an email scam, file a complaint with the FTC at: www.consumer.ftc.gov/identity-theft-and-online-security/identity-theft and click on the “File a Complaint” button at the top.
If you ever suspect any type of suspicious activity, report it to the proper authorities immediately. Contact the actual bank, credit union, company or government agency to confirm whether the email or website is legitimate.
As a reminder, Erie FCU will NEVER send you an email or text message asking for your personal information. If you get one that claims to be from us, report it immediately!

It’s easy to postpone the habit to save, but a solid plan is key to success. By following some basic guidelines, you’re more likely to achieve financial security. We recommend beginning with these five steps:
1 Start now. The earlier and more you save, the more your money will grow. With compounding interest, you earn interest on what you save, as well as on the dividends generated.

2 Save what you can. It doesn’t matter how much you save, just make sure to save consistently. Start with a comfortable amount (even $10 or $20 per paycheck), then slowly increase it. Ultimately, if you can put 10% of your paycheck into savings, you should be in great shape.
3 Make it automatic. Use automated transfers to get in the habit of saving. You can set up automatic transfers in online banking or with a member service representative. Another option is to have your employer directly deposit a set amount into savings from your paycheck.
4 Plan ahead. Open separate accounts for specific savings goals, such as vacations or holiday shopping. By putting money in accounts designated for specific goals, you are less likely to use the funds for other purposes.
5 Increase your financial knowledge. Knowledge is power. Take advantage of some of our financial education classes. Some of our classes can help you save a lot of money!
Ready to take the next step? Erie FCU has savings accounts, term deposits, wealth management services and more to help you meet your financial goals. Contact us today.
While Erie FCU was taking its first steps with just 46 members and $241 in deposits, the rest of the world was undergoing monumental changes:
FDR and the New Deal:
President Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected in a historic landslide, securing 523 electoral votes and signaling broad public support for his Depression-era recovery policies.
The Rise of Social Security:
In mid-November, the very first Social Security numbers were issued, fundamentally changing how Americans planned for their future.
The Hoover Dam:
One of the greatest engineering feats in U.S. history was officially completed in March and began transmitting electricity to Los Angeles by October.
Baseball’s First Hall of Famers:
The Baseball Hall of Fame was founded in Cooperstown, NY, electing its first legendary class including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Honus Wagner.

A money mule scam is when someone sends money to you and asks you to send a portion of it to someone else. They often ask you to use gift cards or wire transfers. The money they are providing you is likely stolen. Drug and human trafficking are also common sources of the money, and they’re lying about the reason they need you to send it. The relationship, job, prize or other reason used is just a pretense; they are simply using you to launder money.
How do you avoid it?
Do not be a middleman. Do not let someone funnel money into your account in order for you to send it to others.
Avoid jobs that ask you to transfer money. Don’t send money to a “client” or “supplier” on behalf of a company. It is never wise to use your own bank account for work related things.
Never send money to collect a prize. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. No legitimate contest will ever ask you to send money for a prize. Also, if you did not enter to win the prize, be skeptical of anyone claiming to have a prize for you.
Don’t send or accept money from an online love interest. Never send money to someone you have never met. It is a bad sign when they start asking you for money.
Criminals are experts at making up reasons to get people to help them with their scams. Don’t do it. If you have any concerns, contact us. And remember to NEVER give out your account information to anyone.

The Official “Chief Cuddle Officer” and Financial Literacy Mascot for Erie FCU!

Earnie didn’t just show up with a wagging tail and a passion for pennies—he was actually named by the very people who know the credit union best: the Erie FCU staff! After a spirited internal vote, the team decided “Earnie” was the perfect fit for a pup dedicated to helping kids earn, save, and learn. Christine Storten, one of Erie FCU’s Credit Card Coordinators, submitted the winning name!
Earnie is on a mission to prove that managing money isn’t just for grown-ups—it can be a “paws-itively” awesome adventure. You’ll find him in our youth activity books, and on social media showing everyone that with the right habits, financial success is a walk in the park.
When he isn’t busy teaching the difference between “wants” (like extra treats) and “needs” (like a sturdy leash), Earnie loves helping the next generation of Treasure Club members dig up great savings habits.
