We welcome you to our 8th annual production sale “The Gathering at Shoal Creek.” We hope to see old friends and make new ones on the weekend of April the 6th as we present our best at our Big Sale Event! While the cattle are the focus of our industry, it is the people and the relationships formed that are at its heart. The Sandeen Donna 4532 cow continues to bring high quality females to the sale with her stunning open heifers by W/C Executive Order and an awesome bred heifer sired by W/C Relentless. The LLSF Robins Kiss YS51 donor led off the sale last year and several of her daughters standout in both the open and bred heifer pens. The exciting progeny and embryos out of HPF/Borne Knockout Y030 are our first offering from the past Living Legacy high seller and one of our newest donors, SC Daisy Duke C1 makes her Gathering Sale debut with an incredible fall heifer calf by TKCC Carver. Many of the fall bred heifers are carrying the service of the dominant champion SC Pay the Price and the proven W/C Executive Order. The select fall bred cows are ones that we have depended on and have proven themselves by bringing quality daughters to past editions of the sale. Many of the spring pairs and breds are direct daughters of our donors, and the herd sire prospects include some of the stoutest fall bulls we’ve raised with excellent EPD profiles. This year’s offering of females out of Sandeen Donna 4532 is truly exciting in so many ways! When it came time to flush 4532, the Executive Order mating was one I had in mind for her for a while. I talk a lot about the focus on cow families and how we work to stack the deck with the ones that lead the way both in terms of look, predictability, and quality. The mating here to W/C Executive Order does just that and offers a cutting edge pedigree with proven and profitable cow families behind them. These are the kind of females that I had hoped Donna 4532 would be able to produce when I laid eyes on her at Sandeen’s. All three of the Donna daughters are so alluring on the profile with their striking look, from the way they tie in their neck high off their shoulder, to their long outline, bold center rib shape, and flexibility at the ground. To top it off, they all carry an outstanding set of genetic predictors with BW, WW, YW, and Milk all in the top 30% or better. The solid black F10 made the trip to the MO State Fair this summer, earning Percentage Calf Champion honors. We had our sights set on acquiring a daughter of Miss Knockout 74T for a while. Members of the Knockout 74T family have proven to produce high sellers, show winners, and valuable breeding pieces in many of the country’s most progressive breeding programs and when we saw HPF/Borne Knockout Y030 leading the pack at Hudson Pines, we made sure we were bidding on her. The first of the HPF/Borne Knockout Y030 progeny to walk the sale pens at Shoal Creek will be this striking pair of females sired by WLE Uno Mas. Many will fall in love with the sharp fronted F24 and her smooth pattern, while others will be swayed towards the deeper and softer centered F28. 221F and 261F are the full sisters to SC Robins Kiss D27, one of our youngest in the donor line up, and they are direct daughters of LLSF Robins Kiss YS51, the leading donor from the 2018 Gathering Sale that is now working for the BF Black Simmentals program in Nebraska. Over the last two years, I have mentioned the Pays to Dream daughter of LLSF Robins Kiss YS51 that was on a direct path to the donor pen. At the time, she was the one and only heifer from that mating. Knowing that she would be her mother’s replacement, it only made sense to reproduce the success. 221F is the performance heifer of the pair with loads of rib shape, internal dimension, and power while 261F offers a more feminine and sophisticated look in a high quality pair of purebred females. I am really excited about the future for this heifer. Classy Lady is a maternal sib to the heifer that Bailey McCalister campaigned last year that won Champion Simmental and Supreme at numerous county fairs, was Champion Simmental at the Ozark Empire Fair Junior Show, a class winner and Reserve in Division to the Champion at the MO State Fair, and 5th in her division at Junior Nationals. Definitions of Terms Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
Explanation of How to Utilize API and TI Indexes First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described to the left, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
