Welcome to the 2020 Drake Bull Sale! Elite Balance Bulls 2019 brought new challenges with the unprecedented cold and moisture in the Midwest wreaking havoc on calving and other aspects of operations. I was reminded of the severe drought that occurred in southern Iowa just a few years ago. I looked with a pit in my stomach at the dead grass and dried up ponds and said to dad “What are we going to do”. He said simply, “We will get through it, we always do. We will figure it out”. I love the optimism that is required by farming and the cattle business in particular, and the positive outlook on life that results. With that attitude in mind, we turn to the opportunities available in 2020 and the hope generated by new trade deals with China and Japan. And we “figure it out”. A large part of our figuring is our investment in and propagation of the best genetics available for the commercial cattleman and woman. In our view the best way to serve you is to provide Elite Balance Bullsbulls that excel in ALL the traits needed to survive and thrive in the cattle business today. We feel some seedstock providers have lost their way in the pursuit of massive growth numbers. When one focuses on only one or two traits, problems arise elsewhere. The singular focus on growth leads to calving ease and birth weight issues as well as larger and larger framed cattle, reducing efficiency. We believe this is unnecessary in that it is possible to obtain outstanding growth while maintaining balance in other traits. We start first with a no compromise approach to calving ease and docility. If we have to pull calves and deal with the negative impacts that follow, and if we have to chase nervous cattle and deal with the negative impacts that follow, we start well behind where we want to be. For that reason we refuse to compromise on genomic and live findings for calving ease and docility. Thereafter, we turn our uncompromising eye to growth, carcass and maternal traits. We have found that it is extremely difficult to find cattle that excel in all of these areas while maintaining calving ease, docility and a sensible frame. But it is possible. It is possible to breed Elite Balance Bulls-bulls that excel in all of the key economic traits. We have scoured the country and invested heavily and uncompromisingly in such genetics. And this year we have supplemented our increasing reliance on Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) with new genomic testing-these tests significantly enhance the accuracy of the EPDs and reduce risk for you. We have also experimented this year with a new genomic test known as RightChoice that searches for key genes that denote excellence in the most economically important traits-look for our heavy use of these new technologies next year and thereafter. Cattle breeding has been, and always will be, part art and part science. As better science becomes available to guide our art, we would do a disservice to ourselves and our customers to ignore these tools. As you review this year’s bulls you will see the increasing influence of our “figuring”-the bulls and females in this sale reflect the response we hoped for from our applied genetic pressure. This pressure starts with the bulls we use to produce genetics for you. The Platte River bull continues to be a stalwart producer for us and his EPDs have increased as more calves are reported from him. River is in the top 2% of the breed for calving ease, 2% for weaning weight, 3% for yearling weight, 2% for maternal calving ease, 2% for milk, 1% maternal weaning weight, 1% for stay, 3% for docility, 1% for carcass weight, 4% for marbling, 1% for shear, 1% for All Purposed Index and 1% for Terminal Index. The definition of an Elite Balance Bull. This year we added Hook’s Eagle to our program and he is similarly dominant. Eagle is in the top 15% for calving ease, 1% for weaning weight (+103.4 pounds!) and 1% yearling weight (+169.1 pounds!!), 1% for average daily gain, 10% maternal calving ease, 10% maternal weaning weight, 2% docility, 2% carcass weight, 20% marbling, 2% ribeye area, 1% shear, 1% All Purpose Index and 1% Terminal Index. We continue to invest in bulls that will add to our genetic pool to produce more and better Elite Balance Bulls. And as you study the bulls for sale in this sale, you will see the influence of these bulls in the ever improving total performance and power. Please also do not miss the females offered-they reflect the same advanced genetics as the bulls and will make a strong addition to any seedstock herd. As we look optimistically to the future, we are finalizing plans for our new sale facility to be located at the home farm near Exline, Iowa. That facility will host our 2021 sale.
