Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2020 Heartland Simmentals Performance with Class Fall Female Sale. The last two years have been a struggle in the cattle business, but I firmly believe that brighter times are just around the corner. With that being said, having top end, real world genetics are what get you through the tough times and really make an operation prosper in the good times, and these females will do just that! The offering features some of our top open females, elite bred heifers, along with a unique opportunity to purchase some registered pairs. We are extremely proud of our offering and confident that these females will work in any situation and any program. Many of the breds are AI bred and much of the offering is sired by our elite herd bulls that we scour the country looking for every year! We will be working on videoing all the lots the first week or so of November if the weather permits. Last year we were unable to get this done as we never had a window to do so. We once again welcome guest consignor Larry Hindman from LaMar Farms. He has brought us a very nice set of bred heifers that fit the mold of the type of female we are trying to produce. Also, you will see some females resulting from the partnership that we have with Willie Morris Cattle Company. Feel free to give either of these guys a call regarding their consignments. I am trying a little something different this year, rather than give a redundant footnote for every bred female, I am going to give one on the entire set. Feel free to contact myself, Willie, or Larry regarding individual questions on each lot. Every female has a little something special to offer, but I truly believe that this is such a consistent, uniform set that I can summarize many of them up in a group.
BREDS
My Dad, Tom, always talked about “Real World” genetics. He was always referring to cattle that can do it on their own, without the extra condition, hair, and fluff to make them appear to be something they are not. Cattle that genetically can milk, move, sustain condition, and perform in real world conditions. These females are just that! I know that because they were raised and developed under these conditions. They were born and raised in the hills of southern Iowa and northern Missouri where cows need to be easy keeping, great footed, be able to milk, have the genetics to perform, and survive on fescue grass.
They were then weaned and developed just north of Humeston at Hunter Brothers where they were backgrounded until breeding and then turned to grass pastures. The only time these girls have seen a kernel of corn was in silage they were backgrounded on or when being called up to a corral.
These heifers cleaned up with Viper and the other set was cleaned up a Sure Fire ½ blood calving ease bull that I purchased from T Heart Ranch this spring. “Heartbreaker” as he is referred to around the farm, is a sound made, big middle Marlboro Man son that boasts a 17.7 for CE, -3.3 BW and a 165 API.
They have been developed and bred to be working girls that can survive in the “Real World”. They are a sound made, deep sided, big ribbed, stout set of females that are still attractively made. As a group they have a great set of numbers with emphasis on growth traits as well as watching BW, API, and TI.
The red females were bred to Red Paint, a bull we were impressed with physically and on paper as well.
The black females were all AI’ed to our 2 main calving ease herd bulls, Guardian and Viper. We feel Guardian combines phenotype and numbers as well as any bull that we have seen and that is the reason that we own him today. We truly think he is a breed changer, and these will be some of the first calves sired by him. Viper does a lot of the same things. He is impressive to look at and has the number behind him as well. His first calves look great and he worked well on heifers this past spring.
