Winter Six Ways WORDS Melinda Healy Winter is coming but instead of being a haunting Game of Thrones metaphor, these three words differ depending where you are. Being the country of contrasts that Australia is, the coolest months are felt in varying degrees across this great nation, and while the Northern Hemisphere revels in the blossoming of a new spring, those of us Down Under are preparing ourselves for winter days among the vines; perfecting the pistes in the snowfields, or snuggling up with a loved one in a cabin in one of the country’s off-the-grid locations. With this in mind, Mel Healy has put together a guide to enjoying the winter months six different ways.

OFF THE GRID When it’s cold outside, many of us just want to snuggle up and go into hibernation somewhere away from the everyday distractions. If this sounds like you then you need to seek out Riversdale Retreat in the central Victorian town of Chewton, which is just outside of the Castlemaine goldfields region. The eco-friendly site that is Riversdale is proudly positioned on a private ¾ acre block about an hour and a half from Melbourne and is surrounded by native bushland, providing not only picturesque gully views but an abundance of Australian wildlife too. Designed to be enjoyed whether open or closed off to nature, this Japanese style abode is fully self-contained and features a luxurious tub, Tatami lounge area, and pot belly fireplace for that cosy evening nightcap before bed. Wake up and enjoy a peaceful sunrise from the comfort of your bed or venture out and walk one of the many nature trails on your doorstep. Ideal for: Couples. Singles. Sustainably-minded travellers. riversdaleretreat.com.au
