Australia owes almost one trillion dollars in Commonwealth gross debt. Written out, that is $1,000,000,000,000.

Imagine taking one ordinary 75 centimetre step for every dollar of a trillion-dollar debt. You would travel about 750 million kilometres – roughly five times the distance from the Earth to the Sun. And that is the legacy we are steadily building for Australians who have not yet had a vote. It is tempting to be complacent. After all, America's federal debt has now passed $US40 trillion. Compared with that, Australia's trillion dollars can almost look respectable. But saying somebody has a bigger problem doesn't make ours disappear. Australia's Commonwealth gross debt is forecast to pass $1.1 trillion during 2027–28. Interest has to be paid on that debt before governments can spend money on hospitals, schools, defence, roads or tax relief. And the rate of interest is also forecast to rise significantly. Governments quite properly talk about housing affordability as an intergenerational problem. Young Australians should not inherit a country in which owning a home has become impossibly difficult. And, even more importantly, they should not inherit our unpaid bills. Borrowing itself is not necessarily wrong. Borrowing to build productive infrastructure that will serve several generations can be perfectly sensible. But continually spending more than we earn has become a habit, and we need leaders who will help us change our ways, not make undeliverable promises. Saying the problem is too big to solve is no answer. After World War II, Australia carried a debt burden equivalent to more than $3 trillion in today's economy, relative to the size of the nation. Yet that burden was largely brought under control over the following 25 years. It took determination, economic growth and fiscal discipline – three things our recent governments have too often lacked. Argentina provides a warning of what happens when governments repeatedly postpone difficult decisions. It was once one of the world's wealthiest countries, yet decades of deficits, monetary instability, inflation and debt crises produced extraordinary economic hardship. In 2001–02 it defaulted; more recently, inflation exceeded 200% and poverty climbed above 50% before major fiscal reforms began restoring stability. Australia is nowhere near that position. The point is to make sure we never get there. Shrugging and saying “It's not my problem” is not enough.

It's our debt. Our democracy. Our vote. Otherwise, future Australians may well ask why we knowingly handed them the bill. As voters, our responsibility is to choose leaders who have the will to put things right, not simply promise us the earth and then lead us astray. Here are six things to ask people who are seeking our vote: 1. Will you control government spending? Not slash essential services, but insist that new expenditure genuinely produces more value than it costs. 2. Will you make productivity a national priority? That means encouraging investment, innovation, small business and sensible deregulation rather than assuming prosperity will simply continue. 3. Will you deliver affordable, reliable energy? Environmental objectives matter, but an economy cannot remain competitive if households and businesses cannot afford dependable power. 4. Will you repair education and skills? A prosperous country needs young people who can read, write, calculate, think, build, innovate and participate productively. 5. Will immigration match Australia's capacity? Migration can enrich Australia enormously, but population growth should be matched by housing, infrastructure, skills requirements and the nation's ability to absorb newcomers successfully. 6. Will you actually balance the books? Ask candidates not merely what they want to spend, but when they expect expenditure and revenue to come back into sustainable balance. These are not uniquely Labor, Coalition or One Nation issues. We should judge individual candidates by what they believe, what they understand and what they are prepared to do. My grandfather used to say, “In a democracy, people always get the government they deserve.” If so, it's worth a little time and effort to choose the right leaders, judge them by their deeds rather than their words, and make sure their focus is on “What's best for Australia and Australians?” A big thank everyone who helps make this paper possible – our designers, contributors, advertisers, distributors, volunteers, readers and local supporters. Housing problem won't be solved by overdevelopment in Woollahra and Edgecliff

Young families and essential workers will be locked out of a new housing precinct in Woollahra and Edgecliff under NSW Government rezoning plans, according to the Mayor of Woollahra, Sarah Dixson.

“The NSW Government plan will force 9,400 new luxury apartments and 21,000 additional residents into multiple towers of up to 34-storeys in what is already one of Sydney’s most densely populated areas, without the infrastructure needed to support basic liveability,” the Mayor said. “The government is pushing for a massive population increase that will lead to constant traffic gridlock, no additional schools or hospitals, a shocking reduction of tree cover and devastating loss of local historic and heritage buildings to make way for thousands of new luxury apartments. “No amount of glossy imagery and an unfunded promise of a new walk-up train station in Woollahra can hide the fact this

rezoning will be anything other than a disaster.

“We have no confidence the government will commit the billions of dollars needed to upgrade local infrastructure including main roads, water, electricity and local school capacity – we note there is no funding whatsoever attached in the announcement.” Council released a comprehensive alternative plan for 3,600 new homes for the precinct, backed by expert evidence and technical studies, in August. “We want to contribute housing, but it must be at a level that makes sense and with infrastructure to match. Our alternative is a realistic housing solution, not a future failure,” Mayor Dixson said. “Under the government’s plan, there will be a significant loss of existing affordable apartments, meaning the few homes available to everyday families will no longer be an option, pricing many out of Sydney –

NSW Government rezoning plans for Woollahra and Edgecliff (concept image) the opposite of what the government claims its plan will achieve. “The government’s own economic assessment reveals that the price of new homes in the precinct will be high – it will sacrifice affordability for housing only available at a premium. We are concerned only a 3% contribution will be made for affordable housing." Current sales figures indicate average prices for units in the area are already between $3-5 million, with significant increases expected in the next 10 years. “We have already seen existing homes replaced by luxury apartments in nearby areas of Rose Bay and Double Bay as a result of the government’s Low and Mid-Rise

It’s clear that more of the same in Woollahra and Edgecliff is being rolled out by this government,” the Mayor said. “With the public exhibition closing on October 7, time is already running out on the only chance for the everyone to have their say via the NSW Planning Portal. An iconic presence in the Eastern Suburbs landscape, the Golden Sheaf stands grand and proud in the heart of Double Bay Village. Not just a popular watering hole, it also serves as a meeting place for locals to socialise.

THE ST MARK’S CHOIR: A unique musical community

You may know it for its historic building, lovingly-tended gardens, or stylish weddings – but St Mark’s Church in Darling Point is also home to one of the Eastern Suburbs’ most unique musical communities.

Singing every Sunday for the 8am service, the choir of St Mark’s Darling Point forms the cornerstone of musical worship for an appreciative congregation, with a repertoire of sacred music spanning the past 500 years. Visitors to St Mark’s will hear different pieces sung by the choir each week, including hymns, portions of the service, and anthems (special choir pieces which are sung while the congregation members receive communion). Yet the choir not only enriches Sunday services, but also elevates weddings and funerals, offering a reverent aesthetic contribution to these occasions. In addition, the choir sings special services throughout the year (including twice-annual services of Choral Evensong and a hugely popular Lessons and Carols service) as well as delving into more extensive repertoire for an annual Choir Concert in November. For choir members, the rhythm of this shared activity is both a discipline and a joy. The music, ranging from simple repertoire to more adventurous and advanced works, is sung to a very high

musical standard. Yet the choir is also a space for amateur singers to develop their skills in community with others, in a supportive and non-threatening environment. The liturgical tradition in which the choir participates situates these activities in a profound and far-reaching ‘story’, while also nourishing the hearts and minds of a modern-day congregation.

In addition to the volunteer members who sustain the choir, St Mark’s is also pleased to offer scholarship opportunities to aspiring musicians. ‘The choral and organ scholarship programme – made possible through the generosity of Basil Sellers AO – is a core part of its musical activity'. For young singers considering a musical career, the choral scholarship offers a chance to sing in the choir and boost their skills, growing their experience as a musician through ensemble singing and occasional conducting opportunities while also contributing to the choir’s high musical standard. For young organists, organ scholarships are an invaluable opportunity to develop accompaniment skills and work with a choir at close quarters. (It is worth noting that the current Music Director had his introduction to the world of liturgical music as organ scholar at St Mark’s in 2016!). For the choral scholars, a high point of the year is the Scholars’ Concert in September. This concert provides an opportunity for the scholars to air some solo repertoire. The

concert offers the congregation the opportunity to hear the scholars perform outside the usual choral context and witness the fruits of the choral scholarship programme firsthand. The Choral Evensong (Evening Prayer) service is another highlight of the year. The next service will be held on Sunday, November 1 at 3pm and will feature music by Edward Bairstow. The St Mark’s Choir will sing and David Drury will be the organist. This service will be a lovely time of reflection and beautiful music and will especially appeal to those who appreciate the services contained in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. The current choral scholars number two sopranos, two altos, and one bass – with current tenor and organ scholarship vacancies. There is also space for new volunteer tenors and basses to join the ranks and develop their skills in a supportive environment. Members of the community interested in getting involved are

Then we learn that Mum is beginning to need help managing other financial and personal matters as well. The conversation may no longer be about a bank account. It may be about what authority is needed, who should have it and how Mum's interests and wishes are protected.

Suddenly the question is not simply whether the development has been approved, but whether there are other legal issues that need to be addressed before work begins.

WE'RE SEPARATING, BUT WE'VE AGREED ON EVERYTHING. DO WE REALLY NEED LAWYERS? Perhaps everything has been agreed.

GRANT DELIVERS GAME-CHANGING SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES & YOUNG CRICKETERS A NSW Ports Community Grant is helping ensure more children have the chance to take to the cricket field this season. Sydney Coastal Cricket Club has launched its Play Without Barriers subsidy program, using grant funding from NSW Ports to significantly reduce registration costs for families ahead of the 2026-27 cricket season. Established in 1991 and based at Heffron Park in Maroubra, the organisation provides cricket opportunities for children aged four to 17 years. The Club runs Cricket Blast programs and junior competition teams competing in the Sixers Cricket League South East competition. Club secretary, Natasha Poole, said the NSW Ports grant money allowed the organisation to address one of the biggest challenges facing grassroots sport. "The funding is creating opportunities for more local children to get involved, stay active and build lasting connections within their community," she said. "We thank NSW Ports for investing in grassroots sport and recognising the important role programs such as Play Without Barriers have in strengthening local communities around Port Botany." NSW Ports CEO Marika Calfas said Sydney Coastal Cricket Club is a great example

of how the program supports practical initiatives that improve community wellbeing. "NSW Ports is committed to supporting projects that make a meaningful difference in the communities surrounding Port Botany. National Commemoration of Australian Service in Afghanistan (2001-2021)

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Australian service in Afghanistan, 2001-2021, and is being recognised nationally as a day of commemoration for all who served during the conflict. More than 35,000 Australian Defence Force personnel served in Afghanistan and the Middle East Ares of Operations (MEAO) in over two decades of military operations, with 41 Australians making the ultimate sacrifice and many more carrying the lasting impacts of their service. Maroubra RSL sub-Branch will conduct a commemorative service at 10.30am prior to the monthly members meeting. This service will provide an opportunity for veterans, families and the wider community to reflect on the courage, commitment and sacrifice of those who served, and to acknowledge the enduring contribution of all who supported the mission. 6 SOUTH COOGEE I begin my South Coogee walk at Randwick General Cemetery, established in 1873. Before the cemetery opened, locals had to travel 27km to Rookwood Cemetery or use the older St Jude's Cemetery in the heart of Randwick. Randwick's first mayor, Simeon Pearce, pushed the council to buy the land in Dec 1871. Pearce wanted the site reserved exclusively for Anglican burials. After local disputes and after Pearce stepped down from managing it, the site officially opened as a general cemetery for all religious denominations. Famous people buried here: Sir John See, Louis Stone, Henry Wylie, Charles Henry Streeton and Mary E. Streeton, parents of renowned Australian impressionist artist Sir Arthur Streeton.

I head down Moverly Rd and turn right into Coldstream St and then left into Nymboida St to St Paul's Anglican Church which was established around 1939. The church was founded to serve the growing local community in Sydney's eastern suburbs, providing Sunday services, children's programs, and community outreach.

Heading back to Cuzco St, I pass 'Crypto Castle'. For almost 30 years, this iconic gem sits proudly atop the South Coogee clifftops as one of Australia’s local landmarks. Receiving it’s title ‘Crypto Castle’ by tech entrepreneur Fred Schebesta after he purchased the property in 2021. Mr Schebesta opened the property for photoshoots, filming and luxury stays. Designed by celebrated architect Renato D’Ettorre, this world-class masterpiece features endless views that sweep across the Pacific Ocean from Sydney’s famous Bondi to Lurline Bay. Ellen Waugh lived her entire life in the simple brick home her father built in the 1930s on Cuzco St. The late artist, teacher and lifelong Coogee resident, Ellen Waugh OAM, will be remembered for many extraordinary achievements. But it is a decision she made two decades before her death that cements her legacy as a community-minded champion who helped return Sydney’s coastal walk to the people.

Because the walkway has not been completed to Lurline Bay. I drive to Lurline Bay for the next part of the walk. I begin this walk at Marine Pde Lookout, Maroubra. The White Obelisk (Trig Station). This obelisk served as a surveying marker used to map out NSW and assist with coastal navigation. Maroubra's headland markers played a dual role in tracking coastal geography and guiding passing vessels.

I cross Malabar Rd and head down Cuzco St and onto Bunya Pde to Ivo Rowe Rock Pool. The pool is a naturally occurring "pothole" on the rock shelf, carved out over time by the grinding action of waves and stone fragments. It was initially built up in the 1920s by local residents Giles and Sydney Drake, and was historically known as the "honeycomb pool" used by local fishermen. The pool is named after Ivo Claude Leslie Rowe, a local identity who lived nearby on Evelyn St and helped maintain and improve the pool from the 1930s until his death in 1961.

I then head down Marine Pde to the Lurline Bay pathway towards The Rob Walker Rock Pool, which is a natural swimming hole. The pool is dedicated to Rob Walker, who was a local champion swimmer during the 1930s. But Lurline Bay's claim to fame is Percy Bates and the 1920s Wave Generator. This historical landmark is a 12-metre-long and 2-metre-wide channel hand-carved into the northern rock shelf. In the early 1920s, an inventor and opera singer named Percy Bates set out to prove that electricity could be generated using ocean wave power. Bates built a patented system featuring a movable trolley on rails inside the hewn channel that rolled with the tides and sea swells, pumping water from a reservoir to a turbine.

TACKLING A BUSINESS AT 14! For 14-year-olds fishing is just a hobby… For Tomek O’Neill (the young founder of TJW Tackle) that love of fishing turned into something much bigger: a business. TJW Tackle was born with an idea. Fishing gear was too expensive. As someone who fishes regularly, and knows how quickly tackle can add up, Tomek saw a problem not just for him, but many other young anglers as well. Instead of sitting back and accepting the high prices, he decided to do something about it. At 14 years old, Tomek started TJW Tackle, with the idea of making fishing gear that anglers can actually afford but products they can rely on as well. The idea came from experience. Fishing can be expensive to do. Lures and jigs get lost in snags or fish line needs replacing and anglers experiment with tackle constantly. So someone who’s still at school and doesn’t have a full-time job isn’t going to spend big money every time they need new gear. TJW Tackle was created as an alternative. The brand sells fishing tackle and apparel (5 gram, 7 gram and 10 gram jigs; fishing shirts and hoodies) today but the different jig sizes give anglers options for fishing conditions and target species; clothing lets customers represent TJW Tackle on and off the water. Rather than starting a brand because it sounded fun to do business, Tomek wanted

to solve a problem he had experienced himself. The aim was simple – make fishing more affordable so that people (younger anglers in particular) could enjoy the sport without feeling they needed to spend huge amounts of money on gear.

Running a brand at 14 also means learning far more than just fishing. Building TJW Tackle involves choosing products, setting prices, designing things, marketing the brand, dealing with customers, and planning how the business can grow. All while Tomek juggles school and life. The brand is also shaped by someone who belongs to the market it serves. Tomek isn’t guessing what anglers want – he is one himself. He knows what it’s like to try gear, losing a jig to a snag, chasing bigger fish and wanting quality equipment, but not spending a fortune on it. What started with Tomek O’Neill seeing that fishing gear was getting too expensive has become his own growing brand; 5 gram, 7 gram and 10 gram jigs to shirts and hoodies. TJW Tackle keeps growing but stays true to the idea that started it all – fishing gear made by an angler for anglers.

THE QUIET COLLAPSE OF NSW FINANCES While all eyes are on the Commonwealth government racking up debt past the truly astonishing $1 trillion level, the deterioration of state finances flies under the radar.

NSW fiscal position has gone downhill extremely quickly, from zero just seven years ago, to $117 billion this year, and is set to rise even further $145 billion by 2030. The interest bill associated with state debt was once just 2.6% of total NSW state revenue, but will soon climb to 7.5%, meaning the government is paying more for fiscal irresponsibility and less funding is available for services that people actually rely on. Yet that’s just the start. Much of the borrowing by the state government happened during the pandemic, when interest rates were ultra-low. IPA research reveals that after 2030, this debt will mature and need to be refinanced at a much higher interest rate, adding another $2.75 billion of annual interest costs by mid-2034. The total annual interest cost will ratchet up to almost $14 billion. This staggering figure is set to exceed one-third of the cost of providing health services such as hospitals, staff and the ambulance service. It’s also more than half the cost of the state’s entire education system, and more than police, courts and prison funding combined.

Government bond yields around the world are also climbing towards multi-decade highs. If this continues, refinancing NSW debt will become even more expensive. At the same time that interest spending is set to ramp up, state revenue expectations are falling off the back of declining house values. For a state which collects 24% of its total taxation revenue through stamp duty, this combination of lower sale prices and less property sales is a fiscal double whammy.

The property slump is nationwide, but NSW coffers stand to feel the most pain, particularly in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, where multimillion-dollar property sales generate massive stamp duty payments, but high value properties are expected to face the steepest price fall and would punch a significant hole in the state’s revenue. This type of Victorian-style financial recklessness has caught like a bushfire and quickly spread across all the states. What started as a liquidity injection during the pandemic has snowballed into an entrenched culture of debt-fuelled spending. Ultimately, NSW cannot tax its way out of this mess. If there is a genuine will to turn the situation around, it either needs to become a productivity powerhouse and outgrow the debt, or face some hard truths and dramatically reduce spending to restore fiscal discipline. Faster targets set to remove offensive graffiti

Randwick Council’s comprehensive graffiti removal program will now remove offensive graffiti even faster under an updated policy. Councillors endorsed the new policy which will see the timeframe to remove graffiti classified as offensive or hateful reduced from six to four hours.

Shelter on the way for Little Bay bus stop

Little Bay bus users will soon have somewhere dry to wait for the bus with Councillors endorsing a non-advertising bus shelter, finished in heritage green to be installed for the southbound stop on Anzac Pde south of Pine Ave.

Randwick Council will be an event partner for the 2026 Local Government Summit Against Antisemitism and For Social Cohesion, to be held at Bondi on Nov 26-27, 2026. Co-hosted by the Combat Antisemitism Movement and Waverley Council, the summit brings together council leaders, community and faith leaders and experts from across Australia, and includes a ceremonial gathering for the victims of the Dec 2025 antisemitic terrorist attack at Bondi Beach.
