WOOLLAHRA SMALL SCULPTURE PRIZE 2026 FINALISTS ANNOUNCED P3
Small business is not a minor part of the Australian economy. It is its foundation.
Around 97% of Australian businesses are small businesses. They employ more than five million Australians and account for roughly 42% of private-sector employment. They provide the shops, trades, professional services, cafés, workshops and enterprises that keep communities functioning. And the Hills Hoist grew from Lance Hill making clothes hoists in his Adelaide backyard. Dick Smith began his electronics business in 1968 with just $610, installing car radios from a small, rented premises in Sydney. Australia has repeatedly demonstrated that today's person working from a garage, spare room or tiny shopfront may become tomorrow's substantial employer. But more than that... small business helps protect a free society. Small business owners are, by their nature, independent-minded people. They take risks. They make decisions. They employ people with their own money at stake. They solve problems without waiting for somebody else to do it for them. These were the values championed by Sir Robert Menzies, Australia’s longest-serving Prime Minister, the values that helped shape one of the most confident and prosperous periods in our history. He saw that the great middle class who worked, saved, built businesses, raised families and carried much of the responsibility for the nation were the bedrock of successful country and, more than that, he saw that a country containing hundreds of thousands of independent business owners has power dispersed among its citizens – and is a great protector of freedom. Not surprisingly, socialist governments prefer a less larrikin environment and seem indifferent to the fate of small businesses, despite having their own National Small Business Strategy programs. In truth, Chris Bowen rates his Net Zero targets of greater importance than the wellbeing of Menzies forgotten people. His logic being that prices will eventually be cheaper, but in the process, he is destroying small businesses and driving all production overseas. Is he uncaring, unaware or deliberately seeking to remove all independent minded parties from the political scene? How does he think he can get away with it? The answer is simple, he relies on the natural desire of most people to feel comfortable, and
that means taking no risks. Taking no risks looks sensible, but it comes at a price. The price is no changes, no innovation, no discoveries and no new inventions. Exactly the things that generate the wealth that help create a comfortable life. Socialists rely on this and build bigger governments with more rules and promises of a more comfortable life. But as Argentina’s president Javier Gerardo Milei recently quoted “There are no free lunches” and he should be listened to for Australia is currently headed down the same road that earlier destroyed Argentina’s prosperity. Electricity standing-offer prices for some small businesses rose by as much as 8.5% from July 2025, depending on location. Yet the Government argues that an orderly transition will ultimately produce cheaper, cleaner energy, greater investment and new industries. But what happens to businesses that cannot survive long enough to reach this promised cheaper-energy future – when the businesses that drive our wealth creation are all gone or moved overseas?

WOOLLAHRA SMALL SCULPTURE PRIZE 2026 FINALISTS ANNOUNCED Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf has announced the finalists for the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize, Australia's most prestigious award for small-scale sculpture, now celebrating its 25th Anniversary.
Since the first exhibition was held in 2001, the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize has demonstrated the extraordinary breadth and complexity of contemporary sculpture. No single style, material or approach defines the Prize. Instead, the only constant has been a continuing search for quality, originality and artistic excellence. Included in the 2026 exhibition are the superb works of 49 finalists selected from 724 local and international entries. Each exhibiting sculptor provides extraordinary insight into the contemporary sculpture scene as a whole. The winning work, selected by this year's judges, will receive the $25,000 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize and join Woollahra Council's public art collection. Gallery Director, Sep Pourbozorgi said: "The finalists selected by this year's judges come from across Australia and around the world,
including the United States and Ireland, and represent both emerging and established artists at pivotal moments in their careers. "Here, artists reveal the remarkable breadth of contemporary sculptural practice, with works in bronze, paper, glass and ceramics. Assemblage, often incorporating found objects and recycled materials, features prominently alongside 3D-printed and kinetic sculptures. Some works explore history, industry and the expressive potential of materials themselves, while others emerge from failed experiments, successful prototypes and the pursuit of new artistic directions. The result is an exhibition that captures the richness, originality and innovation of contemporary sculpture." Woollahra Mayor Sarah Dixson said: "Over the past 25 years, the Prize has become Australia's pre-eminent award for small sculpture, and an internationally recognised showcase for creative excellence. As we mark this significant milestone, we are thrilled by the enthusiastic response it continues to receive and excited to welcome visitors to the exhibition of finalists in Oct to celebrate with us and view the remarkable breadth of talent and innovation on display."

Education and support for families and carers’ talks at St Mark’s Church Our community is ageing, and many families are struggling to navigate issues of dementia and caring for loved ones. With this in mind, Friends of St Mark’s is thrilled to welcome back Melissa Levi, Clinical Psychologist, dementia and ageing specialist, and author, as our guest speaker at two special events at St Mark’s Anglican Church, 1 Greenoaks Avenue, Darling Point. This keynote talk aims to provide clear, practical answers for families navigating the dementia journey. The topic is ‘Caring feels hard because it is hard’. Cost is $10. Melissa Levi reflected: “Caring is hard. The emotional weight. The exhaustion. The guilt when you want, just for a moment, to put it all down. It’s not a reflection of your capacity to care or cope. It’s often a reflection that you’ve been caring for too long without the guidance and support you need and deserve". Business structures. Property. Succession planning. Development. Economic uncertainty. MAROUBRA ROAD INTERSECTION UPGRADES COMMENCE Construction on the first stage of important safety upgrades along Maroubra Rd began on Aug 17.
The upgrades are the first stage of a series of improvements that will enhance safety along the Maroubra Rd corridor. In this first stage, a roundabout will be constructed at the Cooper St, Maroubra Rd and Mons Ave intersection. Then, a roundabout will be constructed on the Maroubra Rd and Flower St intersection. The work will reduce traffic lanes from four to two making it safer for drivers as well as people riding bicycles and people walking trying to navigate the intersection. Construction will also include new raised pedestrian crossings and a landscaped median strip. “Safety comes first,” Mayor Parker said. “Locals have told us these intersections need improvement and I’m pleased we have been able to respond to community
feedback and deliver significant safety improvements for the Maroubra community.”
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING CONSTRUCTION
We will stage the works to minimise disruption wherever possible and will keep the community informed throughout construction. Residents may experience: • Temporary traffic changes and detours reduced on-street parking during construction. • Construction noise during approved working hours. • Local residents will be informed of these changes via a leaflet drop. The full set of intersection upgrades along Maroubra Rd between Bunnerong Rd and Malabar Rd are designed to be completed within the next few years, as funds become available.

Supporting independence of seniors for nearly 70 years For nearly 70 years, Meals on Wheels Randwick has been quietly supporting older people across Randwick, Waverley and Bayside to remain independent, nourished and connected in their own homes. More than just a meal delivery service, the organisation is built on a simple but powerful idea – that small, consistent support can make a lasting difference to a person’s health, wellbeing and independence. Today, that support extends beyond meals. Through its Shopping Service, Meals on Wheels Randwick is helping older residents who may struggle to access groceries or manage shopping on their own. Clients simply provide a list, and the team takes care of the rest – shopping and delivering groceries directly to the door for a small $5 delivery fee. Each visit also includes a friendly wellbeing check, offering an added layer of reassurance and social connection that many clients deeply value. Jessica Hobson, Community Program Lead at Meals on Wheels Randwick, said the
organisation’s role in the community has always gone far beyond food. “We often say we’re ‘more than just a meal’ – and that’s because we see every day how these small interactions support people to stay independent and feel connected,” she said. “Good nutrition is essential, but so is knowing someone is looking out for you.” With more Australians choosing to age at home, services like Meals on Wheels are playing an increasingly important role in supporting safe, independent living. “For many of our clients, these services mean they can continue living in the home they love, with dignity and confidence,” Jessica said. “That’s something we’ve been proud to support for nearly 70 years.” Meals on Wheels Randwick is encouraging older residents, carers and family members to reach out and learn more about the support available.

Walkabout with Ruth South Maroubra to Malabar Coast Walk 1
I begin my walk at Arthur Byrne Reserve and then head to the to the South Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club. The Club is one of Australia's oldest Surf Life Saving clubs, established 1959 to protect beachgoers at the Southern end of Maroubra Beach. Pioneer members navigated tough patrol conditions, shark hazards, and basic fibro clubhouse facilities before major area improvements took shape. Early leader John Dynan, lobbied Randwick Council to transform the adjacent swampland and tip into the organized Arthur Byrne Reserve and parking facility. Over the decades, the club introduced specialized rescue capabilities, including Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) operations starting in the late 1970s. The organisation evolved from early restrictive policies to embrace a large, family-focused membership, introducing active Nipper programs and female members. Today, the club boasts over 2,000 members.

One of the lookouts along the way is Magic Point. During World War II (1939–1945), Magic Point was integrated into Sydney's outer coastal defense system. A concrete searchlight station and its associated power supply building were constructed at Magic Point to spot enemy ships and assist the nearby Boora Point Battery without dazzling gunners. Magic Point is widely celebrated as one of Sydney’s premier boat and shore dive locations, featuring deep gutters, walls, and overhangs. The site is famous for its seasonal aggregation of critically endangered grey nurse sharks, which find a protected micro-habitat along the rocky reef.

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 22)
THE HERMIT is the Tarot Card for Virgo. This Card shows a hooded figure holding a long staff in his left hand and a lantern in his right hand. On the lantern is a Golden Star. This Star indicates wisdom and shining within although outward appearances don't seem that way. Virgo is the sign of a loner who analyses before deciding. He is a diplomat and expects alot from himself although playing by the rules and paying attention to detail.
The coastal walk is parallel to the the Anzac Rifle Range which is one of the world’s oldest continuously active ranges. Recreational shooting began in the 1850s, with 12 targets in operation by 1888. In the 1910s–1920s, the NSW government dedicated the headland for military use followed by a survey for a permanent range in 1919 and Commonwealth control in 1929. During WWII, the site featured 43 military installations, including the Boora Point Battery. Following the closure of the original Anzac Rifle Range in Liverpool (1967), clubs were transferred to the Malabar site. The range faced threats of redevelopment in the 1980s and 2010s, but secured a 50-year lease for the NSW Rifle Association to continue operating on the site.

Looking south, Malabar Beach curves along the shoreline, and on a clear day you can see as far as Botany Bay. To the north, the cliffs stretch towards Maroubra creating a stunning contrast between the ocean and bushland. Approaching Boora Point, I pass the Boora Point Battery, where old gun emplacements offer a glimpse into Sydney’s WWII coastal defences. These relics, now covered in graffiti, sit atop the cliffs providing some of the best viewpoints along the walk.

NEW FACILITIES OPEN TO SUPPORT NEXT GENERATION OF RANDWICK NETBALLERS Thousands of netball players across Sydney’s eastern suburbs will benefit from a new amenities building at Maroubra’s Heffron Park, which was officially opened by the NSW Government and Randwick City Council.
The new facility provides modern and accessible amenities to support Randwick Netball which has almost 5,000 members and attracts more than 10,000 visitors each Saturday to Heffron Park making it the largest participation sport in the area. The project was co-funded by Randwick City Council and the NSW Government under the Level Playing Field Program. this new building in partnership with the NSW Government,” Mayor Parker said.
“The new amenities block at Randwick Netball is fantastic because now our players have a safe area with wonderfully upgraded facilities that move us into the next era for our girls,” said Randwick Netball Association CEO, Jenny Morrissey. Heffron Park is Randwick City’s largest recreational park and is used for training and competition by a wide range of sports, with netball being the most popular. As part of Council’s continued effort to provide and maintain high-quality public spaces that enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of our community-based sport and recreation facilities, providing a safe and welcoming environment for women and girls to train and compete. The facilities will also support other park users such as people visiting the Heffron Park Markets on the third Sunday of the month.

BONDI JUNCTION SET TO BECOME A SPECIAL ENTERTAINMENT PRECINCT Our community has told us they want a reinvigorated, vibrant Bondi Junction with more to do at night – more places to eat, socialise and enjoy music and cultural events. In response, Council is working with the NSW Government to trial a Special Entertainment Precinct (SEP) in Bondi Junction, to support a thriving, safe and diverse night-time economy. As a primary gateway connecting the city and the beach, Bondi Junction is the ideal location to bring together people, culture and local commerce. Council is utilising the SEP development framework, which is already in place in precincts across Sydney and NSW. This would give the area greater flexibility for live music and entertainment, extended trading hours and diverse nightlife options. This initiative is a long-term investment in improving nighttime vibrancy in Bondi Junction. It ensures Bondi Junction continues to grow as an active economic and cultural hub where local businesses can thrive, and residents and visitors alike can enjoy high-quality entertainment.
To ensure local voices shape this precinct development, Council will establish a dedicated SEP Working Group. We want business owners, community stakeholders and residents to work alongside us to bring this vision to life.
WHAT THE SEP IS – AND WHAT IT ISN’T Plans for the Bondi Junction SEP are standalone night-time economy development plans.
• The SEP is not part of the Bondi Junction Master Plan. POWERFUL MEMORIAL SCULPTURE ACKNOWLEDGING OCT 7 IMPACT ON LOCAL COMMUNITIES UNVEILED A powerful new memorial artwork jointly commissioned by two Eastern Sydney councils has been unveiled to recognise the enduring impacts of the atrocities of Oct 7, 2023.
A solemn ceremony held in Christison Park in Vaucluse was hosted by Woollahra Mayor Sarah Dixson and Waverley Mayor Will Nemesh. The MC was Michele Goldman, CEO of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies. The sculpture, titled In Them We See Ourselves, comprises fragments of weathered Corten steel rising from the earth and leaning inward, offering shelter within, speaking of fracture and protection, and grief and endurance. It was specifically designed to be interacted with, providing a visually compelling space for quiet contemplation and meditation. Jointly commissioned by Woollahra Council and Waverley Council last year, the public artwork aims to provide the Jewish community with a place of healing and hope. Woollahra Mayor Sarah Dixson thanked the anonymous artist for creating a piece of public art that provides a place to come together and reflect on the tragedy of the Oct 7 attack and the ongoing grief felt by members of the Jewish community. “Its sheer size and steel form that rises from the ground is a symbol of hope and strength
and will serve as a permanent reminder of the need for all of us to be united in our opposition to hate and antisemitism," Cr Dixson said.
“It is a place for reflection, meditation and a source of healing. “In deciding to be anonymous, the artist honourably allows the focus of the artwork to remain on the community, providing a space to sit and reflect on a tragic event that should never be forgotten.” The sculpture’s poignant and clever symbolism is “deeply moving” and makes it part public art, part furniture and part monument, Cr Nemesh remarked. “The impact on the Waverley community of both the Oct 7 attack and the ensuing antisemitism has been profound," he said.

"This installation will be a welcomed place of healing, from which to both reflect and look forward." The sculpture’s artist is formally credited as ‘Anonymous’ because the work was inspired by many from within Sydney’s Jewish community, including those with very close connections to the Oct 7 attacks, and embodies their shared voices. “In recognition of the sensitivities surrounding this work, anonymity allows the focus to remain only on the community it represents,” the creator said. Each Council contributed equally to the cost of the commission.
THE DEMISE OF SMALL BUSINESSES When the federal budget was released in May, some prominent entrepreneurs lamented the impact misguided policies would have on the Australian start-up scene. Anyone watching what has happened to Australia’s small business sector in recent years might ask: ‘Have you only just noticed?’ The truth is, Australia’s have-a-go spirit has been challenged for some time, and we need to be honest about the situation: our economy has been distorted over decades to lock out aspiration and lock in dependence on big government. Institute of Public Affairs research has found that between June 2022 and June 2025, there was a net loss of nearly 33,500 small employing businesses in Australia. There were three consecutive years of net closures of small businesses, an unprecedented occurrence in the available historical data. Every year, more red tape burdens are added to businesses without any thought given to how significantly these burdens impact our economy. In the last four years there’s been a wave of insolvencies as thousands of small businesses go under, unable to cope with the rising costs of our sclerotic regulatory environment.
Between 2004-05 and 2018-19, the volume of regulation increased by around 80%. In 1960, the share of national income accruing to family businesses and the self-employed was 26%. Today, it’s around 7%. What has taken the place of family businesses and self-employment? Well, the ratio of public to private sector employees has increased from 14.2 per 100 in 2014, to around 22 per 100 today. And industries like healthcare and social assistance and education and training are nominally counted within the private sector, yet are funded almost entirely by taxpayers. Between 1984 and 2024, the number of non-market sector employees increased from 1.4 million to 4.5 million. These economic shifts beget cultural shifts. As the government and broader public sector grows, it imposes ever-greater costs onto an ever-shrinking private economy. The result is a society that’s at risk of losing the values self-reliance and independence, values which are replaced with an expectation that someone – anyone – else will foot the bill. A new class of people who effectively ‘vote for a living’ are incentivised to encourage larger and more interventionist governments to maintain or enhance their job security, or create new employment ‘opportunities’.
It might take a long time for this kind of economy to come unstuck, but there will be plenty of needless suffering along the way. The more profound battle, perhaps, is to undermine the ideology and values underpinning this economic and cultural shift. Socialism has been debunked economically every time it has been tried. Parking permits made easy
Council is always working hard to deliver better services for the community, and we have introduced Digital Parking Permits to make the process simpler, faster and more convenient. This means you can now apply, manage, or renew your permit online 24/7 without needing to visit us in person. You will no longer need a sticker on your car’s windshield, because your registration plate is your permit. If you already have a permit, you don’t need to do anything. Playground upgrade

$217,000 boost for local community projects
Council has approved $217,089 in grants through the June 2026 round of its Community Investment Program, backing 19 local projects. Projects sharing in the funding include Dangerous When Wet – The Musical, a comedy about pioneering local Olympic swimmers Fanny Durack and Mina Wylie bound for Randwick Town Hall; The Men's Table, expanding its peer-support groups for men's mental health; Weave's Kool Kids after-school music and fishing programs for local children; and RSL LifeCare's Randwick Veteran Wellbeing Project, supporting the 1,177 veterans and Defence families living in the area.

Council will audit multilingual safety signage across its beaches and coastal reserves to make sure translations are accurate, culturally appropriate and built to last. The review will include compulsory lifejacket signage located at known rock fishing blackspots including Little Bay as well as adding additional languages and using QR codes for multilingual information.

Council reviews lifeguard services
Council will review the operational capacity of its lifeguard services, taking in rising visitation, growing early-morning ocean use, emergency response needs and the recent shark attack. As part of the review, Council will investigate staffing and the feasibility of trialling patrols from 6am.
Honouring netball legend Fran Reynolds OAM
Council has paid tribute to Maroubra resident and local netball legend Frances “Fran” Lorraine Reynolds OAM, who passed away on July 19, 2026 aged 86. A Life Member of both the Randwick Netball Association and the Matraville Tigers Netball Club, Fran gave more than four decades of service to the sport as a president, vice president, coach, selector, team manager and volunteer, mentoring generations of local players and their families. Her contribution was recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2023.
Safer path to the water planned for Gordons Bay
Council will investigate improving the popular water entry point at Gordons Bay, which has served swimmers, snorkellers, kayakers, surfers and divers for more than 20 years. Working with the Gordons Bay SCUBA Diving Club, Council will look at smoothing and levelling about 12 metres of uneven rock platform beyond the existing footpath, which is exposed to southerly swells at low and mid tides. Council will also identify the approvals needed from Crown Lands and other authorities, explore funding including NSW Government grants, and report back before any work begins.
