ABOUT COACH BILL HOLOWATY One of the most successful coaches in NCAA Division III history, Bill Holowaty retired with a 1,404-525-7 (.727) career record. As of 2024, he still ranks 3rd all-time in wins among NCAA Division III coaches and 16th among all collegiate coaches. Holowaty led Eastern Connecticut State to four national championships and was National Coach of the Year four times. He has the most victories of any coach — in any sport — in New England intercollegiate history. Holowaty’s legend was built upon consistency. In addition to winning four national championships, the Warriors posted at least 30 wins 28 times in the last 40 seasons under Holowaty and brought a streak of 11 straight 30-win seasons into 2012, when they fell one win shy of extending that streak. Only one Holowaty-coached team in 44 seasons ever won less than 60 percent of its games. Under Holowaty, Eastern either won the Little East Conference regular-season or post-season championship or both in the same season 14 times in 16 years. Eastern won or shared the LEC regular-season title eight times in the first nine seasons of LEC competition. A catalyst in the development of the game of baseball at the local, regional, and national levels, Holowaty was instrumental in establishing the NCAA Division III baseball championship in the mid-1970s and was one of the founding members of the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA). Since 1969, he has been an integral member of the American Baseball Coaches Association, serving for many years on the All-America committee and as ABCA president in 2006. Currently, Holowaty is a member of the ABCA Board of Directors. Holowaty is a member of the ABCA, National College Baseball, NEIBA, Eastern Connecticut Athletics Alumni, Little East Conference, Greater Hartford Twilight League, and Greater Utica Sports Halls of Fame.
