PUBLISHER’S NOTE ON THE COVER

Work is love made visible.

--KAHLIL GIBRAN

Most of us do not consider our work in a romantic way. But I believe work as a parent, a teacher, volunteer or whatever vocation we pursue allows us to show our love for others by contributing our talents for a greater good. The poet Kahlil Gibran observed, “When you work, you fulfill a part of earth’s fondest dream assigned to you when that dream is born.” This edition of the EAST COBBER spotlights those people in our East Cobb community fulfilling their part of the “earth’s fondest dream” by working from the heart.

From Lucia McBeth starting a nonprofit and becoming a political activist (see page 10) to the members of the Big Chicken Chorus singing Valentine’s Day wishes (see page 7) to the organizers of the Amazing Grace Race (see page 54)—all are examples of East Cobbers showing their love through their work.

This edition also marks the 17th anniversary of the special section, “Child Care and Preschool Guide.” Born out of my own need for quality child care for my then preschool-aged children, I realized that other parents may be in search of those services. After hours of research and revisions, I am proud to present not only the plethora of child care and preschools offered right here in our own backyard, but also the high caliber of child care facilities that play a vital role in the healthy development of our children. The information on pages 20-27 fulfills the EAST COBBER’s mission to provide, you, the reader, with useful information about our community.

It is my hope that this issue, like every issue, is a handy reference for East Cobb residents in search of local resources as well as a source of inspiration.

Working from the heart,

According to Kuhn, open communication and being accessible is what sets their team apart. “We answer our phones, respond to emails and make sure that we regularly update our clients on the status of their cases. When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work, and we make sure we are there for our clients when they need us.”

The attorneys also pride themselves on getting results as efficiently as possible. They schedule court

The firm specializes in bankruptcy, family law, personal injury and divorce. The attorneys have valuable advice to share with clients. “We recommend that if you are considering bankruptcy, you come see us before making any financial decisions, including liquidating your retirement savings,” says Kuhn. “We can save our clients a lot of money and stress if they come see us first. If your house is under water, we can discuss options on lowering your payments.”

As personal injury experts, they also recommend getting a second legal opinion if you’ve been injured or had a wrongful death in your family. Hait & Kuhn will listen to your story and can even help with treatment options if your medical insurance is unreasonable. “Many times our relationship with clients lasts many years, and it’s important that our clients feel comfortable with us and know that we will aggressively fight for them,” adds Kuhn.

You Are What You Eat

"You are what you eat" is a motto that we see quite often this time of year as we dive into our New Year's resolutions. It is a particularly helpful reminder when faced with less than healthy choices at mealtime. Healthier standards for more nutritious food is a topic that is trending today, especially regarding our youth. In fact, it was just this past summer when the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 implemented their last phase of nutrition standards nicknamed "Smart Snacks in School" across the nation.

As a result, we have seen our local schools make positive changes for a healthier lifestyle for students while on school grounds. Our local PTAs have either started Health & Wellness committees or added more wellness events to their calendars to include Fresh Fruit Fridays or Wellness Wednesdays, as well as Morning Milers, Healthy Champions, farm to school taste tests, and incorporating school gardens into their curriculum. In addition, some of our schools have changed their primary fundraising to fitness related events such as 5K runs and added after school fitness or running clubs. Many of our teachers have implemented the NERT (Non-Edible Rewards and Treats) system in their classrooms, which is simply rewarding students with privileges instead of candy.

While our state has allowed some leniency to this new standard in regards to fundraising, nevertheless we are seeing a dedication of improving the overall health of our students, which is the ultimate goal. To extend these healthy habits outside of school, we can teach our children to read nutrition labels and to think about the fuel they are putting into their growing bodies. Going on a family hike at one of our local parks and encouraging outdoor activities that exercise the body and the mind are some simple ways to increase our fitness levels. Together we can continue this positive momentum of improving the health and wellness of our children.

East Cobber Becomes Advocate for Common Sense Gun Legislation

East Cobber Lucia K. McBath is the mother of Jordan Russell Davis, who, at the tender age of 17, was shot and killed at a gas station in Jacksonville, Florida on November 23, 2012. He was murdered by Michael Dunn, a middleaged software developer because he was agitated about how loud her son and his friends were playing music in their car. Their case was declared a mistrial in February 2014. The case was re-tried in September 2014 and Michael Dunn was convicted of first degree murder in Jordan’s death. Late last month, "3 1/2 Minutes" debuted at the Sundance Film Festival which, examined the death of her son, Jordan Davis. The documentary includes interviews with Davis's parents.

Thrust into the international spotlight, Lucia has turned the tragedy of losing her son into an opportunity to champion and fight for common sense gun legislation and solutions to the issue of our country’s rampant gun violence. After 30 years as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines, Lucia just retired to dedicate herself fulltime to be the national spokesperson for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. In her work as a gun safety advocate, she has testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on the “Stand Your

Ground Laws: Civil Rights and Public Safety Implications of the Expanded Use of Deadly Force” as well as both Georgia and Florida state legislature committee hearings for repeal of the Stand Your Ground Law.

This community activist comes from an extensive family background involving civil rights. Her father was the Illinois Branch president of the NAACP for over twenty years and served on its national board as well. As a child, she traveled with her family attending marches and rallies supporting the civil rights movement and the coalitions of organizations fighting alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In 2014, she was invited to the White House for President Obama’s unveiling of My Brother’s Keeper Initiatives for minority young men. In addition, she has spoken at the 2014 White House Summits on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

Ebony Magazine recognized Lucia as a community crusader/activist for the EBONY POWER 100 for 2014. EBONY POWER 100 celebrates the world’s most inspiring African Americans. EBONY recognizes those who lead, inspire and demonstrate through their individual talents, the very best in Black America.

She recently founded the Walk With Jordan Scholarship Foundation which provides charitable and educational assistance to graduating high school students attending traditional as well as technical and training colleges and universities.

From Selma to East Cobb

A longtime East Cobb resident has decided to share his story about growing up in Selma, Alabama, and participating in the Civil Rights Movement as a teenager. The Rev. Junnus Clay is a 16-year resident of East Cobb County, working as a minister, licensed counselor and nonprofit business consultant.

Clay was only 14 years old when the first Selma to Montgomery march was attempted on March 7, 1965. He and 600 marchers crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge — they were led by now-Georgia Congressman John Lewis and the late Hosea Williams. Clay says they were attacked, beaten and tear-gassed by Alabama State Troopers. This nationally televised event became known as “Bloody Sunday.”

“This was the most frightening day of my life, I thought I was going to die!” says Clay, adding that he also marched on other occasions and went to jail. “It was decades later before I fully understood how deeply ingrained segregation and discrimination was embedded in the South; and the high price African-Americans would have to pay for equal rights."

Clay also saw Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. on numerous occasions and heard him speak regularly at the Selma mass meetings. "I remember marching with him on two occasions — the second failed attempt to march to Montgomery and the final successful march in Montgomery to the State Capitol," he recalls.

Clay's book, “From Selma to Salvation,” chronicles his unique life journey of growing up in Selma, participating in the Civil Rights Movement, leaving Selma, his spiritual conversion through the sermon of a white southern Baptist preacher while stationed in Japan, attending seminary and returning home to Selma to start a new church. “It describes how my life came full circle, from being an activist to an evangelist,” Clay says. He started writing the book last spring; the new movie “Selma” motivated him to finish it. He has seen the movie, and thought it was very good.

“From Selma to Salvation” is scheduled to be published this month. Anyone interested in purchasing the book may visit junnusclay.com or email him at jayc2@bellsouth. net. Clay is also available to speak at churches, schools, colleges, etc.

“Welcome Back to Shaw Park" Day

Scheduled for Saturday, February 14

In 1965, two major events took place which impacted baseball fans in northeast Cobb County. The Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta and, on a rainy July 28th, voters approved a $900,000 recreation bond fund which was the first step in creating Shaw Park. On September 2, 1966 a check for $26,650 was handed to Mr. T.P. Shaw for purchase of 23 acres just east of Canton Road in Marietta/East Cobb. It would take almost another four years, but Shaw Park would become the first county park built solely by the Cobb County Parks & Recreation Department. The original plan was to open Shaw Park in June 1968 but matching federal funds were scarce. It wasn’t until September 27, 1968 that county commissioner Ernest Barrett finally received a government telegram confirming federal funds. By November 1968 construction was underway. But in the first 7 months, rainy weather limited crews to only 50 working days. On Saturday May 2, 1970, the Shaw Park Recreation Club (forerunner to the current Shaw Park Baseball organization) proudly hosted three games to open the Shaw Park Midget League, and one of the county’s largest athletic programs during the 1970s was off and running.

Cobb County officially dedicated Shaw Park on July 11, 1970. It was a showcase for recreation-minded people in the northern part of the county with 2 athletic fields, 2 tennis courts, a paved multi-purpose court, restrooms, playground equipment, picnic pavilion and a half-mile of nature trails. Underground electric wiring was a new feature compared to most other community parks in existence.

Now, thanks to almost one million dollars from 2011 SPLOST funds, Shaw Park has received an extreme makeover. The renovation consisted of 4 new existing ballfields—including dugouts, lights, irrigation and new fences. A new concession stand and a restroom building were also built. Volunteers from the Shaw Park Baseball Association

are excited about these improvements and are sponsoring a "Welcome Back to Shaw Park" day on Saturday, February 14, 10am to 2pm. This special event will feature business booths, bounce houses, the Braves Around Town team, food trucks, and more fun stuff! Baseball tryouts and registration will also be offered. If you are interested in being a vendor, email: eventplanningbysharona@yahoo.com.

Don't You Just Love Cobb County?

I love Cobb County. We all have a lot of reasons to love Cobb County!

That was the essence of my State of Cobb County address last month (which can be viewed on TV23: Video On Demand: Special Presentation) at the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. That's because in Cobb, we have every right to feel very good about a number of accomplishments, from our rare, Triple-A rating (now going on 18 consecutive years), to our strong school system.

Everything our 4,500 county employees do, every day, is done to provide the best services possible to our citizens and visitors. They do what they do so you get your money's worth from the taxes you pay - still among the lowest in metro Atlanta, by the way - and so you can, frankly, brag to others about where you live!

Here's what you, as a Cobb County resident or business owner, have to brag about:

• a citizenry invested in the county's future

• excellent quality of life

• low cost of living and/or doing business

• low taxes

• strong employment

• effective public safety

• excellent educational opportunities

• ongoing improvements in transportation

• local commitment to parks and recreation

• a county with 18 years of Triple-A ratings from all three credit-rating agencies

• a water system also with a triple, Triple-A rating

• a fiscally conservative government with a healthy budget surplus

• favorable and competitive business conditions

• steady local leadership

• a county with strong relationships with its cities. That's a pretty impressive list, don't you think?

These are on the wish lists for most anyone searching for a place to live or a place to do business. It's normal; people want to a local government that's working on their behalf. They want a government that empowers them - through its own efficiency and responsiveness - to accomplish anything they set their mind to.

Cobb County does that. Our employees do a phenomenal job executing beyond expectations and delivering more for less. Their accomplishments are many, but the rewards are ours.

I love that.

If you love it too, then please tweet #iLoveCobb.

Serving Cobb and All Metro Counties

s Tim Lee, Cobb County Commission Chairman

Cobb Chairman Tim Lee Hires a Deputy Chief

Cobb Chairman Tim Lee announced last month that he will hire Kellie Anne Brownlow to serve as deputy chief to the chairman. At an annual salary of $105,000, Brownlow will manage and coordinate activities for designated projects with county staff, state and local government partners and various boards, commissions and committees to ensure Cobb County’s goals and objectives are accomplished. She will research and coordinate special projects, media inquiries and Open Records requests received in the Chairman’s Office, respond to public inquiries and represent the Chairman’s Office at various meetings, committees and speaking engagements. Brownlow began her new position on Monday, January 12.

“Our growing role in the region and constant focus on expanding Cobb’s economy demands more and more of my attention,” Lee said. “Adding Kellie to the team and having her expertise in local government as well as experience with economic development will be a key component in accomplishing more for our county.”

Brownlow brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in economic development, government relations and project management to Cobb County. East Cobb Lions Recycle Eyeglasses

According to The World Health Organization, 153 million people have uncorrected vision. Most of these vision impairments are quickly diagnosed and easy to treat with corrective lenses. Lions Clubs International is a service organization with over 45,500 clubs and more than 1,368,683 members in 205 countries around the world. Among the many service projects, Lions are best known for their program to recycle eyeglasses as a way to help the visually impaired. It costs Lions less than 8 cents to provide a pair of recycled eyeglasses and change someone's life.

For children, clear vision means a better education, healthier development and a better quality of life. For adults, clear vision means greater employment opportunity and economic strength. For seniors, clear vision means less dependence on others. Lions clubs collect millions of eyeglasses each year to address the need for glasses, making eyeglass recycling one of their most popular activities.

You can donate glasses and change someone's life. Help a child read, an adult succeed in his job, a senior maintain independence, and provide a community with more opportunities to grow and thrive. You can drop off your usable eyewear at Lions-sponsored collection boxes. Typical locations include libraries, schools, community centers, places of worship, coffee shops, optometrist offices and other public places. See the highlighted box for East Cobb locations where you can drop off your eyeglasses.

The East Cobb Lions Club is in its 56th year of service. They are an active and growing group of service-minded men and women who are interested in improving the community. They are young people, families and Baby Boomers alike. To become a Lion is to become an active volunteer, a member of a respected international organization, a leader in the community and a friend to people in need.

If you're interested in becoming a member of the East Cobb Lions Club, call Lion Ray Moore at 770-425-7881 or email famousray@comcast.net. East Cobb Lions meet at 7pm on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month at Cherokee Cattle Company, 2710 Canton Road in Marietta/East Cobb.

East Cobber is the best way to find a lot of information we need. I love it because I can find community events and I can post our business for less. Kim Biggee McLaughlin How you support the community.

I love how the East Cobber keeps me up to date with the happenings around East Cobb! You help me keep up with what’s going on around the neighborhood. You keep me informed about things going on around town and new restaurants.

I love the East Cobber. It is great for providing all kinds of info on East Cobb. You guys showcase events and business in East Cobb. East Cobber comes highly recommended by me because of all of the interesting contents. I love knowing what is going on in my community. You keep me and my friends up on all the latest upcoming events. Thru your magazine I have learned about businesses I did not even know were in the East Cobb area. I especially like your features on local people. I also like your covers. I can relate to your contents completely. I like that I actually recognize the areas, vendors and activities you highlight! It’s really nice to hear about all that. And the ChildCare reviews were so helpful to me when I needed it!!! I’m from a small town, and the East Cobber makes this Atlanta suburb feel more like a friendly small town where people know and care about you. Where the accomplishments of the good people are celebrated instead of sensationalizing the crimes of the bad. Thanks for focusing on my community! The East Cobber is my “go to” guide to let me know what cool things are happening right here in my very on backyard! Thank you for providing very informative info about this community!

The following pages provide a comprehensive listing of all child care centers, Mother’s Morning Out (MMO) programs, and preschools available to children up to the age of 5 in East Cobb County. This information offers a quick review of the child care and educational programs located right here in our East Cobb community. We have not attempted to “rank” or “rate” any centers. BCW staff and providers provide information and therapeutic services to parents about their children’s medical/developmental conditions. They train the parent to provide services to their child in the natural environment on a daily basis.

DINING GUIDE

Recipe of the Month RECIPE OF THE MONTH

This month’s recipe was submitted by Tiffanie Abernethy, EAST COBBER’s Facebook Friday Freebie and E-newsletter Coordinator. In celebration of the Chinese New Year, to be held February 19, we asked Tiffanie to share a recipe she prepares and shares with her family for the Chinese New Year. Tiffanie was born in Taiwan (name: Yun Chun Cheng) and moved to United States with her parents and older brother when she was 2 years old. She attended Kincaid Elementary School, then Simpson Middle School, and graduated from Sprayberry High School in 2003. A graduate of Kennesaw State University, Tiffanie lives in East Cobb with her husband, Chase, and 2 children: Laina, 5; and, Charlie, 2. Here is her family’s recipe for making Nian Gao (Chinese New Year Cake). In Chinese, Nian Gao sounds like "getting higher year by year". In Chinese people's mind, the higher you are, the more prosperous your business is. “Nian gao” means year cake, but gao sounds the same as the word for “tall” or “high”. Hence, the cakes symbolize achieving new heights in the coming year. Here’s to a prosperous new (Chinese) year!

Nian Gao: Chinese New year’s Cake

Ingredients:

3 eggs

2 cups brown sugar

3 cups glutinous rice four

2 1/2 cups milk

1 tablespoon vanilla

1/2 cup chopped dates

2 teaspoons baking soda

1/3 vegetable oil

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Lightly grease a tube or pan with cooking spray or a little butter (or margarine).

3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the eggs and sugar.

4. Slowly stir in the rice flour and milk. Mix the ingredients until they are completely blended.

5. Next, slowly add the vanilla, dates, baking soda and vegetable oil.

6. Pour the mixture into the greased pan and bake for fifty minutes.

7. Allow the cake to cool fifteen minutes before removing it from the pan.

8. Finally, sprinkle the top with sesame seeds.

Share with twelve to sixteen people while you welcome the New Year.

“In February 2013 I made a phone call that truly changed my life. It was to Fitness Together. I met with the owner, Katie, and I knew right away that they were totally different than any place else. Since the day I joined, I have consistently worked out 3-4 days per week and have increased my cardio activity to 6 days a week. I have lost 22 lbs. of fat, 7% body fat, and dropped 2 dress sizes! My trainers are so encouraging and ALWAYS have positive attitudes. I am sure that there are no other workout centers that have such a high caliber of trainers working under the same roof as FT does. There is one other thing. In July 2013, I joined the statistics and became unemployed. to be made on how our family was going to cut back on expenses. One expense that we thought about cutting out was my personal training. Luckily we re-thought that and came up with other ways to cut back. I knew that I could live without certain things but to stay healthy physically, mentally and emotionally, I simply could not live without my workouts at Fitness Together.”

“I had been fluctuating in my weight for the last 7 years I finally decided to do something about it, because my idea of “eating right” and exercise was not doing it Completely tired of looking in the mirro on I finally said “enough is enough ” While comp mentioned a postcard he had received from Fitn day and had an appointment set up the next day my past I thought I have to give this a try I lost o more importantly have kept it off for over a year constantly keep the workouts fresh and fun, and outs The knowledge they have given me will be

After putting on 20 pounds, the last thing I felt like doing was exercising. But my trainer helped me start slow and train steadily. Her faith in me kept me from getting discouraged. Most important, she helped me make my own wellness a priority. And once that happened, the pounds really started coming off. Now that I’ve reached my ideal weight, she wants to set some new goals. And I say, bring it on.

Bringing Awareness to Ovarian Cancer is a Personal Quest for East Cobb Resident

Back on April 25, 2002, Kelly Klanian Williams, who is now a Cobb County resident, found herself battling a dreadful disease at the young age of 21 while working on a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Virginia. Williams who had hardly ever suffered even a sniffle and had no family history of cancer received a shocking diagnosis when she was told she had stage 1a ovarian cancer. And according to the National Cancer Institute, ovarian cancer occurs in just three out of every 100,000 women between the ages of 20 and 24. What are the odds with her age and no family history?!

Earlier in the year before the diagnosis, Williams had ignored what might have been normal signs of weight gain, missed menstrual periods and other symptoms that something was horribly wrong with her body. She was busily immersed in her studies and just wanted to focus on school. What ended up being a “strange weight gain” ended up being an 8 pound cancerous tumor removed by her doctors, followed by four rounds of chemotherapy, loss of hair, and many days she was too weak to get out of bed. Today, thirteen years later, Williams is cancer free, recently married and looks forward to the possibility of having a house full of children.

After battling and surviving such a deadly disease, Williams desired to give back to others and help those who might be battling ovarian cancer. Williams stated to a reporter once that “On my refrigerator I have a bucket list — things I would like to accomplish before I die, or ‘kick the bucket.’” The first thing on her list is “cure cancer.” She is thankful for those researchers before her who were willing to go that extra mile and find something that might help her live so she wants to give back to others so they a have the same opportunity.

To date, the biggest initiative Williams has been involved with in helping is with the Ovarian Cancer

Research Fund’s (OCRF) Ovarian Cycle Ride to Change the Future® which began over ten years ago in memory of Debbie Green Flamm, who succumbed to the disease at age 43. A decade later, thousands across at least 10 major U.S. cities have ridden in support of the cause, raising more than $2.1 million to fund scientific research.

On March 7, Williams would like to encourage others to join her at the Midtown Athletic Club from 9 AM – 3 PM to cycle in a six-hour indoor cycling event raising money for much-needed ovarian cancer research located at 135 Interstate North Parkway NW, Atlanta, GA 30339.

Participants in OCRF’s Ovarian Cycle Ride to Change the Future pedal toward a healthier body while simultaneously raising money for this worthy cause.

Ovarian Cycle was launched in Atlanta in 2004 and in 2012 became a signature event of OCRF, the oldest and largest charity in the U.S. funding ovarian cancer research. With annual cycling fundraisers now scheduled in at least 10 major U.S. cities, to date Ovarian Cycle has raised more than $2.1 million to fund scientific research on ovarian cancer.

Ovarian Cycle is sponsored nationally by Health magazine, Coca-Cola and LUNA energy bars. Local sponsors adding their support to the Atlanta event include Midtown Athletic Club (the Host Sponsor) and Butin Integrated Communications of St. Simons Island, Ga.

“As this exhilarating fundraising event continually expands and gets stronger, it helps bring us closer to the day women will no longer need to be worried about ovarian cancer,” says Bethany Diamond, founder of Ovarian Cycle. “Since day one, Atlantans have set an example with their outstanding dedication to this cause, which is helping fund some remarkable research in the fight against this dreadful disease.”

To register for the 2015 OCRF Ovarian Cycle Atlanta Ride to Change the Future®, visit ovariancycle.kintera. org/Atlanta. The registration fee is $50 per person. (The fee is waived for ovarian cancer survivors.) In addition, prior to participating in the final ride March 7th all riders individually must meet a fundraising minimum based on the number of hours they plan to ride. The fundraising minimums are $600 if a participant is planning to ride all six hours on March 7th(solo or as a team member) or $400 if an individual is planning to participate on a bike for less than six hours.

Many Ailments Respond to Chiropractic Care

Many people are not aware of that the fact that headaches, nervousness, digestive disorders, high blood pressure, neuritis, neurological and sciatica – to name only a partial list – are frequently overcome by chiropractic care.

Any of these afflictions may be caused by displacement of spinal vertebrae which interrupts the flow of nerve impulses to organ and limbs. Chiropractic correction of this condition restores health in a great many cases.

Cobb Elder Abuse Task Force Ensures Safeguards for Seniors

More people are living longer than ever before in America’s history – that’s the good news. Unfortunately, elder adults can become frail, vulnerable, and the target of abuse – that’s not good news. So what do you do if you suspect someone in your neighborhood, at a care facility where you visit a relative or, worse case, in your family is being abused? Due to the efforts of some concerned Cobb County citizens, there is now a Cobb Elder Abuse Task Force (CEATF), which is a multi-jurisdictional organization that addresses financial, physical, and institutional senior abuse.

What is elder abuse? According to Georgia law, it is any intentional or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person who causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult. It includes financial exploitation; neglect; self-neglect; abandonment; and physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Statistics provided through the National Center on Elder Abuse reveal that those 65 and older comprise 13 percent of our population, with that number growing exponentially every year. Approximately 9.5 percent of our elderly population will experience some form of abuse. However, the alarming statistic is that studies estimate only one in 14 cases is reported to authorities.

“This is a society problem,” says East Cobber Joe Gavalis, a CEATF coordinator/volunteer. “We all have a responsibility to become more aware of protecting our seniors. Sadly, abusers can be family members, friends, or trusted caregivers.”

As a retired federal agent, Gavalis was aware of how other states handled elder abuse reporting. Combining his firsthand knowledge with activity already in motion through the Cobb Neighborhood Safety Commission, CEATF was organized in early 2013. The task force is a collaborative effort of around 40-plus county, state, and federal organizations (Cobb city police departments, Cobb Senior Services, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia Adult Protection Services, and the Social Security Administration to name just a few), local financial institutions, and the YMCA. The group’s focus is to educate citizens and business communities about elder abuse, as well as enforce and recommend laws. Vic Reynolds, Cobb County’s District Attorney, serves as the task force chairman and is a regular speaker for Cobb groups, such as churches, civic organizations, senior living facilities, and neighborhood organizations, conducting seminars to educate people about the warning signs of elder abuse and how to report it.

CEATF focuses on three major aspects of abuse: financial, physical, and institutional. Although national statistics list neglect and physical abuse at the top of the list, task force members say that about 70 percent of Cobb’s elder abuse is financial. This abuse involves activities like improper use of a power of attorney; telephone, email, or door-to-door solicitations; or scams, such as fraudulent investing.

Already making a difference in the community, the task force worked closely with State Representative Sharon Cooper to develop legislation that toughens penalties for operating an unlicensed personal care home, raising the first offense to a felony from a misdemeanor. This law was passed in 2014.

Let’s keep our seniors safe, and if you suspect elder abuse, call the tip line. The anonymous tip line is 770-794-6990. Your call will be routed to the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office if the concern is financial and to the appropriate agency for other issues. For more information, visit the facebook page at www.facebook.com/cobbeatf. If you would like for someone to speak about elder abuse at an upcoming organizational meeting in Cobb County, contact CEATF Secretary Jeff Wood at 770-514-7565.

The Amazing Grace Race To Be Held February 14

Not one but two little girls’ road to recovery is no longer just a metaphor. On Saturday, February 14, Mt Bethel United Methodist Church will host the inaugural 5K Run/ Walk named The Amazing Grace Race to raise money for two East Cobb young girls battling cancer.

Grace Bunke is an awe-inspiring, 11-year-old girl with a special love for running. On August 1, 2014, after months of knee pain and physical therapy, Grace was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. She has had amputation surgery of her lower leg and is undergoing constant chemotherapy. After she becomes the victor in her battle with cancer, Grace dreams of running again with her sister. She prays to get the best and fastest prosthetic leg so she can fulfill her dreams.

Grace Detling is a vivacious 6-year-old girl that loves to create masterpieces, play soccer and be with friends. After an unlikely run in with a dog in which Grace required stitches, doctors noticed a focusing issue with one of her eyes. On July 25, 2014, Grace was diagnosed with a slow growing, inoperable brain tumor. While undergoing a combination of pill form chemotherapy and IV chemo therapy, Grace continues to attend school, drama and church. She remains positive and upbeat through her battle with cancer and is learning to view the world without peripheral vision.

These girls and their families are in the middle of their fight against cancer. In the coming months both families will have moments of joy and peace mixed with pain and fear. It is the goal of this race to raise funds so the financial burden will not add to the struggles they face. The race organizers are asking local corporations/ companiesto help make a difference in the lives of these young girls.

The Amazing Grace Race starts at 8am on February 14 at Mt. Bethel UMC, 4385 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta/ East Cobb. It is $25 to participate in the race. To register or for more information, visit www.amazinggracerace.net.

WHAT’S YOUR STORY?

It’s such a basic question, but one that most businesses struggle to answer … much less communicate clearly. But in today’s age of endless marketing messages competing for a very short attention span, clearly communicating your “story” is an absolute imperative. Articulating and embracing your brand story is what makes it happen.

Dermatology Affiliates

Welcomes Dr. Abbott to East Cobb

easier than ever, because Dermatology Affiliates recently added Cynthia Abbott, M.D. to its practice. Known for their focus on patient care, the physicians at Dermatology Affiliates see patients for any condition impacting skin, nails or hair. They specialize in diagnosing and treating skin cancer. They also treat acne, psoriasis, eczema and removing warts or moles.

Personal

Pampering at Hair Art By Christine

Dr. Abbott has always felt at home in two worlds, the world of science and the world of art. It’s part of what draws her to the field of dermatology, where you need both skills to bring out healthy and beautiful skin.

“I feel like all my life have been trying to combine those two,” Dr. Abbott says.

“In college I majored in both art and biology. I got my master’s in Medical Illustration and I did a fellowship in Cosmetic Dermatology. am a very visual person. Any treatment that I do for a patient, I would want to be aes thetically pleasing.”

The visual appeal may have been what started Dr. Abbott’s interest in dermatology. But what keeps her going is the variety of people she gets to help.

Dr. Abbott also completed an internship in Pediatrics at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville. And as such, she feels she has expertise in Pediatric Dermatology and Cosmetic Dermatology.

Christine Rhodes

“What I mostly love about dermatology is the multigenerational factor,” Dr. Abbott says. “I love that see kids and World War II vets in the same day.”

Walking into Hair Art by Christine makes you feel you’re visiting a friend rather than getting a haircut.

Stylist Christine Rhodes has recently moved her business to one of the 12 private suites in Sola Salon Studios, which is located in the heart of East Cobb. Brilliantly lit with ceiling to floor windows, Christine’s cozy corner of the world provides you with just the place for what she calls “personal pampering.”

Following in the footsteps of her beloved grandmother’s retail store in Indiana, East Cobb resident Laura Fanoe is opening a boutique full of upscale jeans, cute little tops, accessories, and unique gift items. Laura gave her shop the same name as grandma’s shop, The Hub Boutique “The Center of Fashion”, as the ultimate nod to grandma. She says, “My grandmother and I were best friends.” The Hub is still a family affair, as Laura’s mother-in-law, Dorris, family members, and her best friend are helping out.

As a Marietta native, wanted to give local women (and men) the accessibility to great designer clothing without the hassle of time consuming commute. I want The Hub Boutique to be your “go to” store when you are in need of a wardrobe/attitude pick-me-up,” shares Laura.

It’s all about you – no waiting and no scuffling from chair to chair. The suite gives you privacy and her undivided attention.

To get the most out of your partnership with your dermatologist, Dr. Abbott recommends understanding your medical needs.

“Be educated, know your own medications, and know your medical history,” she says. “I like to work together to treat your diseases and concerns.”

A hair color specialist and stylist, Christine has been in the business for 25 years. For the past 13 years, she worked at Van Michael’s Salon in Sandy Springs. Wanting to branch out on her own, Christine was looking for both freedom and flexibility. “I want to be flexible for my clients,” says Rhodes. “When you work for a large salon, someone else is handling your schedule, and the products you use are chosen for you. Now I can offer better scheduling and product choices. The privacy of the suite also gives my clients a personal experience.”

The Hub Boutique opens for business November 3, just in time for colder weather and the search for holiday gifts! Men and women of all ages will be able to find high-end jeans at The Hub. Laura had both normal and a-bit-heavier people try on different jeans, until she found the best brands to carry: jeans that make everyone look great! She said, “The idea is to have something for everybody…to [have customers] find the perfect fit.”

At The Hub Boutique, you can shop for upscale, wellcut jeans or lower-priced gifts. Explore not just shades of indigo denim, but several other color options. NYDJ, the newly re-branded Not Your Daughter Jeans, are available. The store carries everything from the cleaner-looking Henry & Bell to the very trendy look of True Religion.

Christine considered her current customer base when searching for a new location. The new Johnson Ferry address is convenient for her East Cobb customers. For the Sandy Springs customers, she is just a few miles north of her previous location.

Dermatology Affiliates is located at 4939 Lower Roswell Road, Suite 106-A, across from the Parkaire Shopping Center. For more information, visit www.dermatologyaffiliates.com or call 404-816-7900

Appointments are available on Tuesdays through Saturdays. Christine emphasizes that she is flexible in her scheduling, with Thursdays designated for late appointments.

“We are incorporating San Diego Hat Company merchandise…including a really cool scarf that has a pocket,” said Laura. Another unique item is a soy candle that makes a warm wax you rub on your hands, as a kind of lotion. Who knows what other cute things you might find? Check out The Hub Boutique at Merchant’s Walk shopping center, 1311 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 140, in Marietta/East Cobb. Visit their stylish and very informative website at www. TheHubBoutique.com

Hair Art by Christine is located at 1062 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite #100, Studio #127, in East Cobb. (The studios are directly behind Goldberg Bagel Company and Deli.) To schedule an appointment, call 678-794-5162.
