In today’s world, strong, inspiring women continue to lead the way— whether in politics, journalism, boardrooms, classrooms, or right here in our own neighborhoods. These women work with heart and determination

to build a better future for us all. Yet for many of us, our first and most enduring example of strength, grace, and resilience came from one place: Mom.

As Mother’s Day approaches on May 11 this year, I find myself especially reflective. I have been deeply shaped, inspired, and unconditionally loved by my own mother—and by the nine grandmothers I’ve had the privilege of knowing. For most of my life, I’ve held a place in a living line of five generations of women who not only nurtured families but also thrived as professionals, leaders, and caregivers.

Here at the EAST COBBER, I’m grateful to work alongside an incredible team of women who embody that same spirit— balancing work, family, and community while bringing this magazine to life with passion and purpose.

To the mothers, grandmothers, and all the powerful women shaping East Cobb: Happy Mother’s Day. Your strength, love, and example continue to inspire us all.

TRASH TAXI: THE LOCAL, FAMILY-OWNED GARBAGE SERVICE MARIETTA DESERVES

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering why trash pickup has to be such a hassle, you’re not alone. Delays or no shows as your garbage and recycling piles up is not uncommon in Cobb County. Drivers that place your bins back to NOT block your driveway? Should be a no brainer, but sadly that isn’t the case with many trash services in the area.

That’s exactly why Trash Taxi has been doing things differently for the last 20 years. Locally owned by three brothers, this Marietta-based company is built on a simple but powerful motto:

“Treat our customers’ neighborhoods like you would treat your own.”

We sat down with Trash Taxi’s co-owner, Jon Swierenga, to get the inside scoop on what makes their service stand out.

Q: What makes Trash Taxi different from other garbage companies?

A: We’re not a giant, faceless corporation. We’re a local, family-run business that’s been serving Marietta and East Cobb for 20 years. Our customers aren’t just stops on a route—they’re our neighbors. That’s why we go the extra mile to offer better service, more flexibility, and a personal touch you won’t find with the big guys.

Q: Do you offer recycling pickup?

A: Yes! And here’s the big difference: we pick up recycling every week, not every other week like many competitors. That means less clutter piling up in your bin and an easier way to stay green. We realize many families need this service weekly and we are happy to provide it.

Q: How much trash can I put out each week?

A: Along with your regular bin, we’ll pick up three extra bags at no additional charge. Got more? No problem—each extra bag is just $2.50.

Q: What if I have large items to get rid of?

A: We’ve got you covered! If it’s at street level, we can arrange a special pickup for furniture, appliances, and other bulky items. Just give us a call to set it up, as we would need to staff appropriately to get these items in our truck and give you a price.

Q: Do you offer dumpster rentals?

A: Absolutely! We provide roll-off dumpsters for home renovations, cleanouts, and big projects. Whether you’re tackling a DIY remodel or clearing out years of clutter, we’ll help make it easy.

Q: What is a roll-off dumpster?

A: A roll-off dumpster is a big, opentop trash container that is brought to your home or job site on a special truck. It “rolls off” the truck and onto the ground, so you can easily throw away large amounts of trash, like broken furniture, construction debris, or yard waste. You’ve likely seen these in some of your neighbors’ driveways when they are moving or renovating.

Once you’re done filling it up, the truck comes back, picks it up, and takes all the trash away. It’s super helpful for big cleanup projects, like remodeling a house or cleaning out a garage.

Q. Do you offer any commercial services?

A: Yes, we also work with shopping centers, restaurants and more in the Cobb County area as well. You have likely seen

our trucks picking up at some of your local neighborhood spots. We are the preferred commercial provider of frontend services by local shopping centers, restaurants, warehouses, and small businesses. Our veteran drivers excel at providing weekly services professionally and safely. Our highly skilled industrial Rolloff drivers provide top notch services to contractors, shopping centers, apartments, office buildings, warehouses, manufacturing plants, and entertainment plazas.

Q: Why should I switch to Trash Taxi?

A: Simple—we care. We take pride in keeping our hometown clean, and we make sure our customers feel valued. Our drivers are friendly, our service is reliable, and we’re always just a phone call away when you need us. We accommodate customer needs

with a highly responsive customer service team whose goal is to make it happen.

Q. Anything else you’d like to share?

A: Yes, As a business rooted in the community, we understand the importance of supporting local suppliers, contractors, and businesses. By contributing to the local economy, we help create a thriving neighborhood that benefits everyone, from residents to small businesses. When you choose Trash Taxi, you are supporting your local economy.

Q: How do I sign up?

A: Signing up is easy! Just visit trashtaxiofgeorgia.com or give us a call. We’d love to welcome you to the Trash Taxi family.

Because keeping Marietta and East Cobb clean isn’t just our job—it’s our commitment.

CEO CANDY HUNTER THRIVES IN MALE-DOMINATED MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY

When women excel in a traditionally male-dominated industry, the world benefits,” explains Candy Hunter, CEO of WOW Motorcycles. “The stereotypes disappear and all we are left with are our success stories.”

WOW Motorcycles is an internationally known local business: the world’s largest independent motorcycle and powersports store owned and operated by a woman. Hunter has 30+ years of overcoming obstacles to buy this tremendously successful international business.

WOW Motorcycles began in the late 1980s as World On Wheels International, founded by a Belgian diplomat, Guido Adriaenssens. The company started out as an international export company, selling everything from vintage Harley Davidsons to juke boxes, from fax machines to Coca Cola memorabilia. In 2002, Adriaenssens decided to dedicate himself to wholesaling motorcycles around the world full time and opened a brick-and-mortar space in Marietta. This was the same year that Candy Hunter joined the WOW Motorcycles team.

As interest in WOW Motorcycles and the powersports market both grew, the business shifted its focus as a full-time wholesaler to selling motorcycles direct to the public at great prices. They have developed a wonderful staff with a vast amount of motorcycle knowledge. WOW Motorcycles has one of the most diverse groups of people with the skills and experience to deliver excellent customer service. The staff genuinely wants to help people have great riding experiences so that the fun and enthusiasm will continue to grow.

In February 2024, Candy purchased WOW Motorcycles, which has since evolved into WOW International, selling and shipping powersports vehicles locally, nationally, and all over the globe. WOW has recently diversified even further by

adding street legal golf carts to their vast inventory in recognition of the increasing demand in both residential and commercial areas.

“Currently, our full-service local business includes selling new and preowned motorcycles and powersports, as well as providing parts, service, and motorcycle rentals. Our international business focuses on selling and shipping premium motorcycles to Asia, Europe, and South Africa,” explains Hunter.

“Through years of hard work, commitment, and passion for this business and its people, I have become fortunate enough to lead this amazing team as we continue to evolve and define what a leader in this industry can be,” says Hunter. “When I started, there were very few women in powersports, and I have worked for the opportunity to demonstrate not only that we belong in this industry, but we can be leaders who bring new ideas and perspectives to the table. I have Big dreams for what WOW can achieve, and thirty years later, I believe that we are just getting started!”

May 4, 2025, from 11am-4pm, all ages are invited to the WOW Open House and Stunt Show, at WOW Motorcycles (522 Cobb Parkway N., Marietta 30062). Highlights include: music, vendors, food trucks, and giveaways, as well as exciting professional stunt shows throughout the day!

WOW Motorcycles is “The Brand” for powersports, which includes motorcycles and street carts (utility vehicles, or golf carts for the street). Street carts have a broad appeal to all ages and have the commercial draw for municipalities (sheriffs and police), private sector entities, universities, resorts, campgrounds, farms, and walkable cities such as Marietta Square, Downtown Roswell, Woodstock, and Peachtree City.

MACFARLAND PARK

In 2024, McFarlane Nature Park registered over 100 specific events on their calendar in addition to daily, casual use. Reservations allow the Park to pursue compatible use of the facilities that are particularly in high demand during spring and fall. This spring will also see several events open to the public.

Painters are always welcome at McFarlane Nature Park, but it is more fun to paint with a group of interested artists. On April 26, artists from the Roswell Arts Alliance gathered at the Park for a Plein Air Painting Day. The 11.2 acre Park allows the painters to spread out and find the scene that peaks their interest. Paintings were also for sale.

On Saturday morning, May 24, David Long, from the Georgia Forestry Commission will present a talk on invasive species followed by hands-on removal of cherry laurels from the Park. Good shoes and gloves are recommended for those participating..

A SMILE THAT IS BUILT TO LAST

Everyone loves the idea of a picture-perfect smile. Veneers, cosmetic crowns, and dazzling white teeth are more popular than ever. But here’s something many people don’t realize: before any of those stunning results can happen— and last—a healthy foundation is essential.

Think of it like building a house. You wouldn’t put in beautiful hardwood floors or granite countertops before making sure the walls are stable and the foundation is solid, right? The same principle applies in dentistry. If your gums and bone (the foundation of your teeth) aren’t healthy, or if your teeth don’t come together in the right way, your cosmetic work may not last—and it may not look as good as you hoped.

A common misconception is that veneers or crowns are quick fixes for crooked, stained, or misshapen teeth. But if the teeth don’t glide smoothly over one another and

instead collide when you bite, those beautiful new restorations can crack, chip, or wear down quickly. Even worse, unhealthy gums or bone can lead to recession over time, exposing the edges of your new crowns or veneers and making them look unsightly. This is why a thorough evaluation of your oral health is the first and most important step in any cosmetic dental journey.

In many cases, Invisalign can be used to gently move teeth into their proper positions. This creates a healthier bite and ensures that the forces on your new restorations are balanced and not destructive. For others, periodontal therapy might be needed to treat gum disease and restore health to the supporting structures around the teeth. Sometimes, reshaping the gum and bone around the teeth is necessary to improve both health and appearance. For example, adjusting the gum line can make short teeth look longer

and more balanced, giving a more natural, youthful look to your smile.

Cosmetic dentistry is an investment—and like any good investment, it should be protected. By taking the time to ensure that your mouth is healthy, your bite is stable, and your gums and bone are ready to support the work, you’re setting the stage for a smile that’s not only beautiful but built to last. So, before jumping into cosmetic treatment, talk to your dentist about the foundation beneath the surface. It might not be the flashy part of the process, but it’s the part that makes all the difference in the end.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOLS

Summertime is fast approaching, and along with a number of summer camps being offered, Vacation Bible School (VBS) is a favorite summer activity for many local families. Vacation Bible School offers children a chance to immerse themselves in a weeklong camp with a biblical theme. Crafts, games, songs, and fun are common threads in VBS programs. The following is a sampling of Vacation Bible Schools in (and close to) East Cobb.

CHATT TECH LAUNCHES FAA APPROVED AVIATION MAINTENANCE TRAINING

Chattahoochee Technical College is set to launch its Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) program after receiving the prestigious Air Agency Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration.

This certification authorizes Chattahoochee Tech to operate an approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS), ensuring that the college meets all FAA requirements. The new program is designed to equip students with the technical skills needed to diagnose and repair aircraft power plants, both reciprocating and turbine, as well as airframes, both metal and wood. Graduates will be eligible to participate in the FAA powerplant and airframe examinations in order to earn their A&P certifications.

Starting this summer, the new five-semester program will be held Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with priority enrollment for current Chatt Tech students in Avionics or Aircraft Structural Technology courses. This program includes 81 credit hours and 1,695 contact hours of direct instruction and hands-on training, all taking place in-person at the college’s new Aviation

Training Academy in Paulding County, near the Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport.

“This FAA certification reflects our dedication to the rigorous process involved in training aviation maintenance professionals,” said Jason Tanner, Executive Vice President for Academic Instruction at Chattahoochee Tech. “As the demand continues to grow for these essential workers, we’re proud to provide students with the skilled training they need for successful careers in this industry.”

The Chattahoochee Tech Aviation Training Academy, which celebrated is grand opening on April 26, 2024, is a state-of-the-art, three-story facility spanning over 55,000 square feet. It includes a 12,000 square-foot hangar, along with instructional labs, classrooms, and a technical library. The Aviation Training Academy was designed by Croft & Associates, a Georgia-based national architecture, design and engineering firm, with construction provided by Winter Construction, an award-winning commercial builder based in Georgia.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

RESTORING OPTIMAL FLEXIBILITY & MOVEMENT

It’s well known in the fitness world: a tight muscle is often a weak muscle. Yet, more than half of Americans don’t stretch regularly—a habit that contributes to poor mobility, muscle imbalances, joint stiffness, pain, and even chronic injuries. Over time, this lack of flexibility negatively affects movement quality and overall quality of life.

Stretching’s main goal is to restore muscles to their natural length. When we lead sedentary lifestyles—like sitting at a desk for hours or skipping exercise—our muscles begin to shorten and form knots, much like a wrinkled shirt. This restricts joint range of motion and limits our ability to move freely and pain-free.

 Jermaine Alexander is the Fitness Center Facility Manager at Life University. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a master’s degree in orthopedic rehab.

To improve mobility and reduce injury risk, stretch in all planes of motion: sagittal (forward/backward), frontal (side-to-side), and transverse (rotational). Include movements that stretch the body through abduction and adduction as well.

KEYS TO SUCCESS:

Foam Rolling: Like ironing out a wrinkled shirt, foam rolling improves circulation and warms up muscle tissue, reducing the risk of injury.

Dynamic Warm-Ups: Perform controlled movements that mimic real-life activities, such as leg swings or arm circles, in all three planes of motion.

Stretching Routine: Incorporate passive or active stretching daily. Hold each stretch for 15–30 seconds.

BEST PRACTICES:

Strengthen your core and maintain good posture.

Stretch at least 2–3 times per week.

Stay hydrated—tissue quality depends on it.

Keep moving!

Remember: movement is medicine—and stretching is your daily prescription.

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY

Meet Dixie Wedding, age 69, of Roswell. Her goal is to maintain her current weight within a threeto five-pound range. Here’s her story:

I transferred to Atlanta in 2003 from Kansas City for the American Cancer Society as a national fundraising director. In 2007, I married Patrick. We have a large family and two Toy Fox Terriers. I retired in 2017. I work part-time at Jilli’s Boutique.

Growing up, exercise was not a priority. We played badminton or croquet, or took walks. Food was not a focus, either. We ate meat and overcooked vegetables.

Throughout my adult life, I maintained my weight, but did not eat healthy. I never counted calories, and was not concerned with nutrition. If I gained a pound or two, I would cut back. Sometimes I would make a meal of popcorn and Diet Coke or a glass of wine. I dined out a lot.

Following an osteopenia diagnosis in my mid-fifties, I did not want to be frail and risk breaking bones, so I began running. My goal was running as slow and as long as possible. The miles increased. I ran the Peachtree Road Race and seven half marathons. I became aware of nutrition and prepared home-cooked meals.

I have my neighbor, Linda Litton Martin, to thank for sharing Sparkle Wellness. My Sparkle journey began in January. The first meeting topic was inflammation. I had no idea what foods cause inflammation or how bad it can make you feel.

I attended my first fitness class in February. I was amazed and demoralized, realizing how weak I was. But the encouragement I received through Jacynta’s comments, like “girls just wanna have guns,” helped me focus on what I was doing and how getting started made all the difference. My goal is not losing weight, but maintaining. I am dedicated to improving my strength, nutrition, and overall lifestyle.

Joining Sparkle Fitness showed me that running alone is not enough; I need to build strength. I am learning how to use exercise equipment and my own body weight to work out. Being able to work out on Zoom removes excuses.

Another benefit of Sparkle is that I have changed my eating habits. I use healthy oils, cook whole foods with more protein, vegetables, and fruits. Awareness was my first step in this process. I am conscientious about reading food labels, I meal plan weekly, and I track what I eat and drink.

 Before March 2015  After March 2025

Each week, I track my steps. I run or walk four to five days a week. I am working up to strength training three times a week, as well as recovery and yoga classes.

Top Tips for Others:

Motivation may get you started, but habits create lasting change. Habits make hard things easier.

Make small, simple choices daily. Sleep well, drink lots of water, strength train, be involved in the community, meal prep, track, and enthusiastically spread the Sparkle!

Aging well is an intentional process of blending physical health, joyful living, and mental resilience. All this is within one’s control. By building balance and muscles, one increases mobility and independence.

Eat real food. Sleep. Be joyful. Be grateful.

My 2025 word is “ignite.” That means focusing on positivity, being intentionally active daily, living powerfully and enthusiastically with a smile.

My 2025 mantra is “If not now, when? And my ‘when’ is now!”

Registration is now open for Summer/Fall. For information on Sparkle Wellness, contact Jacynta Harb at www.sparkleanewyou.com or call 404-242-5062.
