PUBLISHER’S NOTE

March has arrived, and with it comes that unmistakable shift — longer days, brighter mornings, and the energy of a community ready to step into a new season. There’s something about this time of year that feels like possibility. Windows open a little wider. Projects move from “someday” to “let’s do it.” Plans start taking shape.

Our 2026 Home & Garden Guide is designed to help you do exactly that.

Whether you’re refreshing a backyard, starting a renovation, building your dream home, or simply looking for inspiration, you’ll find trusted local professionals ready to help you move forward with confidence. Spring is about growth — and in East Cobb, that growth isn’t just in our gardens. It’s in our businesses, too. We’re proud to spotlight local entrepreneurs who are planting roots and investing in our community.

And with St. Patrick’s Day around the corner, we’re reminded how lucky we are to call East Cobb home. Strong schools. Beautiful parks.

Engaged families. Local businesses that support one another. It’s a community that continues to show up — and grow — year after year.

As you plan your projects and explore new businesses, we hope this issue helps you take that next step. Spring rewards action. Start the project. Make the call. The season moves fast.

Here’s to fresh starts, smart plans, and a little Irish luck along the way.

Cheers,

HOME & GARDEN

IF I AM GOING TO RENOVATE A SPACE IN MY HOME, WHAT OFFERS THE GREATEST

RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI)?

I would say 100% it is the kitchen. A family spends a great deal of time in the kitchen. It is where meals are made and shared. It is where homework is done and people congregate during get togethers. Anyone that visits your home will spend time in the kitchen. It has been said, “The kitchen is the heart of the home.” There is a lot of truth to this and a well designed and functional kitchen meets the needs of everyone in the household.

CAN YOU WASH MY HOUSE, TOO?

Yes, we do a Soft House Wash that gets rid of any dirt, grime and mildew. We apply very little pressure as not to damage anything on the home. Helps give your home that freshly painted look and saves the paint also.

WHAT ARE THE FIRST AREAS A HOMEOWNER SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN DECIDING TO RENOVATE A HOME?

First, ensure the house is stable. Foundation, roof and structural damage should be the first priority when renovating your home.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?

We specialize in routine residential cleanings (weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly), deep cleans, move-in/move-out cleanings, and special event preparation. We also offer customized cleaning plans tailored to each home’s specific needs.

I’M THINKING ABOUT ADDING A SUNROOM. WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER BEFORE GETTING STARTED?

A sunroom is a great way to enjoy natural light and outdoor views year-round. Here’s what to consider: Usage: A 4-season sunroom offers insulation and climate control, while a 3-season sunroom is for mild weather. Location: Built on an existing deck, concrete slab, or as an addition—each may need modifications. Materials: Energy-efficient glass and quality framing ensure durability. Permits & HOA: Check local regulations. Builder Reputation: Research reviews and experience before hiring. For expert sunroom solutions, visit dcenclosures.com or call 770-796-4654.

Spring Home & Garden Checklist

As the days grow warmer and flowers begin to bloom, spring is the perfect time to refresh your home and garden. Whether you’re tackling maintenance tasks, revitalizing your landscape, or enhancing your outdoor living spaces, this checklist will help you prepare for a beautiful and enjoyable season in East Cobb.

HOME MAINTENANCE & UPKEEP

• Inspect and Clean Gutters – Remove leaves and debris to ensure proper drainage.

• Check Roof for Damage – Look for missing or damaged shingles after winter storms.

• Service HVAC System – Replace filters and schedule a professional tune-up before summer heat sets in.

• Wash Windows and Inspect Seals –Ensure energy efficiency and enjoy clearer views of spring blooms.

• Pressure Wash Exterior Surfaces –Refresh siding, driveways, walkways, and patios.

• Inspect Outdoor Lighting – Replace burnt-out bulbs and check for wiring issues.

• Test Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors – Replace batteries and ensure all alarms are functioning.

• Declutter & Deep Clean – Tidy up storage spaces, donate unused items, and freshen up interiors.

LAWN & GARDEN PREP

• Clean and Prepare Garden Beds –Remove weeds, prune shrubs, and add fresh compost.

• Apply Mulch & Fertilizer – Retain moisture, suppress weeds, and boost plant health.

• Aerate & Overseed the Lawn – Promote lush, green grass and fill in bare patches.

• Check for Pests – Implement natural or organic pest control solutions.

• Plant Spring Flowers & Vegetables –Great choices for East Cobb include azaleas, hydrangeas, tomatoes, and peppers.

• Inspect & Repair Irrigation Systems –Ensure sprinklers and drip systems are working efficiently.

• Refresh Outdoor Living Spaces – Clean patio furniture, update décor, and prepare for outdoor entertaining.

OUTDOOR

REPAIRS & ENHANCEMENTS

• Check & Repair Fencing – Secure loose boards and repaint if needed.

• Service Lawn Equipment – Sharpen mower blades and perform routine maintenance.

• Power Wash & Reseal Decks – Protect wood surfaces from moisture and wear.

• Plan Landscaping Updates – Add new trees, shrubs, or flower beds for a seasonal refresh.

Spring in East Cobb is a time of renewal and beauty. By tackling these home and garden tasks, you’ll create a welcoming and well-maintained space to enjoy all season long.

CLEAR THE CLUTTER AND FIND YOUR FREEDOM!

Make the most of your organizing time with the right tools. You’ll be better able to dedicate your time to progress without distraction. Here are the TOOLS you will need:

 Trash Bags - Have plenty at the ready and avoid overstuffing to prevent tearing. Thick plastic leaf bags work best for heavy and bulky items.

 Sorting Labels - Write out a label for each action you want to take, such as KEEP, DONATE, SELL, RECYCLE, SHRED, and TOSS.

 Plastic Bins, Boxes, and/or Paper Leaf Bags - Use large plastic containers, oversize boxes, or paper leaf bags (which are easy to write on and can stand up on their own) to hold sorted items. You’ll need one for each action.

 Laundry Basket - Don’t stop sorting to put away items in other areas of your home—simply put them in a single container and return them when current task is complete.

 Notepad, Pen, and Measuring Tape - Make a list of any items you need to replace as well as organizational supplies that might help improve functionality. Note important shelf or closet measurements to smooth the shopping process later.

 Paper Towels and Cleaning Supplies - Even if items themselves aren’t dusty, shelves and tabletops usually are. When you clean as you clear, you’re one step closer to reassembly.

 Timer - If you’re struggling to get motivated, strike a deal with yourself: Work without interruption for 15–30 minutes, then reward yourself with a break. Once you’re on a roll, you WILL want to continue.

CELEBRATING EVERY CHILD: PTA EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN’S COMMITTEES

In the coming weeks, students at several of our East Cobb schools will learn about famous figures with disabilities, participate in pajama day fundraisers to support sensory spaces for their peers, and explore the many ways classmates may communicate or move differently. Behind many of these efforts are dedicated parents serving on their school’s PTA Exceptional Children’s Committee.

Exceptional Children’s Committees support our students with disabilities and learning differences, while fostering understanding, acceptance, and inclusion among their typical peers. They also provide support to our special education teachers and support staff who serve our exceptional students every day.

TEACHING AWARENESS

Education and awareness are at the heart of the committee’s work. Throughout the year, members create bulletin boards showcasing different exceptionalities, like autism, dyslexia, deafness, Down syndrome, limb differences, or visual impairments. These displays often feature famous historical and modern-day figures, sparking conversations and encouraging acceptance from a young age.

SUPPORTING OUR EDUCATORS

Special education teachers, therapists, and paraprofessionals work tirelessly to meet our students’ needs. Exceptional Children’s Committees sponsor classroom supply drives to ensure that these educators have the materials needed to support their students. These committee members also show gratitude through staff appreciation events exclusively for special educators and support staff.

EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN’S WEEK

Our most impactful initiative is Exceptional Children’s Week, which local PTAs celebrate at different times throughout the year, with CCSD officially recognizing during the week of March 9-13, 2026. During this week, several of our elementary schools learn about different disabilities by grade level, in an age-appropriate manner. Lessons are brief and often include short videos or activities designed to help students understand that some peers may learn or experience school differently.

Some schools have hands-on experiences thanks to the CCSD Assistive Technology Department, allowing students to see and use tools that help their peers communicate. School libraries feature books on different exceptionalities, and students hear trivia questions during the morning announcements which further raises awareness and drives conversations.

EVERY CHILD. ONE VOICE.

While each PTA works independently of one another, we are all guided by the belief that every child deserves to be seen and supported. PTA’s goal remains clear: Every Child. One Voice., regardless of ability. East Cobb County Council PTA (ECCC) fully supports the work of Exceptional Children’s Chairs and programs and encourages all local units within ECCC to find a way to participate and educate during Exceptional Children’s Week. To learn more or become involved, reach out to your PTA or PTSA!

Meredith is an East Cobb native and mother of three sons. She serves on the Exceptional Children’s Committees of both Murdock PTA and Dodgen PTSA, amongst other roles.

SECOND CHANCES START HERE: HOMELESS PETS FOUNDATION SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

Spring is a season of fresh starts and for countless cats and dogs in North Georgia, that fresh start often begins at Homeless Pets Foundation in Marietta. Founded in 1998 by an Atlanta veterinarian who recognized a growing need in the community, Homeless Pets Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue dedicated to saving abused, neglected, injured, and at-risk animals who might otherwise be overlooked. This volunteer-driven organization specializes in medical and high-risk rescues. Animals who arrive sick, neglected, or facing euthanasia are provided the urgent care, rehabilitation, and love they need before finding forever homes. Their mission is simple but powerful: every life matters.

The organization’s impact extends beyond adoptions. Weekly volunteer opportunities like Sunday Pack Walks and Puppy Playtime allow approved volunteers to socialize and exercise dogs while building community with fellow animal lovers. Volunteers are truly the backbone of the foundation, assisting with dog walking, cat care, adoption events, transport, and administrative support.

For those unable to adopt, donations of funds or supplies directly support medical treatment, food, shelter operations, and life-saving surgeries. Every contribution helps give a second chance to an animal in need.

What sets Homeless Pets Foundation apart is its community-centered approach. The shelter works closely with veterinarians, fosters, and volunteers to ensure each animal is fully prepared for adoption. Pets receive vaccinations, spay/neuter services, microchipping, and ongoing care. Adoption appointments are handled thoughtfully through an application process designed to create the right match between pet and family.

In a community that values compassion and service, Homeless Pets Foundation stands as a reminder that small acts of kindness can change lives — both human and animal.

WHEN BRACES MAKE TEETH UGLY…

Braces are almost a rite of passage for many adolescents. The middle school and early high school years are an ideal time for orthodontic treatment because the jaws are still developing and teeth move more efficiently. Properly aligned teeth improve occlusion (how the upper and lower teeth fit together) while also enhancing appearance and longterm function. Straight teeth are easier to clean, distribute biting forces evenly, and support a healthy smile for years to come. But there’s something many families don’t anticipate: straight teeth are not automatically healthy teeth.

When braces are placed, brackets and wires create dozens of tiny areas where plaque can hide. Even teens who brushed well before orthodontic treatment suddenly face a much more complicated cleaning routine. If plaque is not thoroughly removed each day, bacteria begin feeding on sugars and carbohydrates left behind on the teeth. As they metabolize these sugars, they produce acid. That acid pulls essential minerals like calcium and phosphate out of the

enamel. This process is called demineralization. The earliest visible sign is the appearance of chalky white marks around the brackets, known as white spot lesions. These areas are actually weakened enamel. White spots are not simply cosmetic flaws. They represent permanent structural damage to the tooth surface. If the demineralization continues, these weakened areas can progress into full cavities requiring fillings.

It can be heartbreaking when braces are finally removed after two years of commitment and anticipation, only to reveal straight teeth covered in noticeable white squares or brown areas. The teeth may be beautifully aligned, but the enamel looks uneven and scarred. In more severe cases, cosmetic bonding or restorative treatment may be needed to repair damage that could have been prevented.

Adolescents are particularly vulnerable because of busy schedules, frequent snacking, sports drinks, and growing independence with hygiene habits. Braces require extra effort. Brushing must be done carefully

around each bracket and along the gumline, ideally after every meal. Daily flossing, often including floss threaders or a water flosser to the routine, is essential. Fluoride toothpaste and, in some cases, additional fluoride products help strengthen enamel during treatment.

Orthodontics is an investment in a child’s confidence and long-term oral health. The goal is not only straight teeth, but healthy, vibrant enamel when the braces come off. With consistent home care and regular professional cleanings, white spot lesions are preventable. Straight teeth should look as healthy as they function, and with the right habits, they will!

HEALTH & WELLNESS SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY

Mary Stegall was featured in our September 2023 issue. She has since had a successful total knee replacement surgery and we want you to know how she got to where she is today.

Mary, a 71-year-old retired nurse, joined Sparkle in 2019, lost 50 pounds, and has been in maintenance for five years.

WHAT TYPE OF EXERCISES DO YOU NORMALLY DO?

Since 2020, I strength train 4-5 times a week via Zoom with Jacynta and a group of ladies. It is easy to roll out of bed, go to my hubby’s man cave where my weights are, and just do it. The comradery has been amazing. We encourage each other before class and talk about it on the Facebook page afterwards. Since 2019, I have completed a 5K every month and six 10K races.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOU NEEDED A KNEE REPLACEMENT?

I had knee pain for three to four years. I got knee injections for a while, but eventually the injections no longer worked. When I could not walk a mile and I felt bone-on-bone, I knew it had progressed. Surgery for a smart knee was the only option.

HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR KNEE SURGERY?

I am in the high 90th percentile for both strength and overall health in my age group due to strength training. I have built muscles and endurance which prepared me for surgery, so I kept strength training. I am chasing strong.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE WITH KNEE REPLACEMENT?

Being patient is the hardest thing. My doctor said I would hate him for the first month but love him thereafter. He was right. I must be patient because recovery does not happen overnight.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS TO PREPARE FOR AND RECOVER FROM MAJOR SURGERY?

Eat healthy. I prepared food and stored it in the freezer for the first couple of weeks. I prepared my husband so he would know what to expect. I made sure I understood the exercises physical therapy would have me complete every day. Total Joint Specialists helped me prepare for the experience. I felt positive about the benefit of total knee replacement and getting back to my active lifestyle. Since this was a smart knee, I also

receive positive feedback from the chip in my knee. It notifies me how much I flex and extend the knee.

HOW HAVE YOU BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN THIS PROCESS?

Three weeks after surgery, I climbed three flights of stairs at church. Going downstairs was much more difficult. I moved light furniture around after three weeks. I am already doing modified strength training. I am looking forward to walking a Disney 5K in 2027 with my daughter. One reason for my success is not just the fabulous, energetic coach Jacynta Harb, but the Sparkle community! The Zoom and in-person Sparkle Wellness meetings remind me to move, eat right, read labels, and practice kindness to myself and others. The Sparkle Fitness classes help me be strong and live a longer life. Balance and modifications are necessary at different levels. Wherever I am in my journey, someone in Sparkle is probably there, too.

I am grateful to be over 70 and active. I have activities with my seven grandchildren, and look forward to doing everything I could before knee replacement without pain. I will never give up Sparkle Fitness. It is so important to strength train and chase strong.

POPE STUDENTS INVENTION SHINES ON NATIONAL STAGE

As seniors across Cobb contemplate where they’ll go to college or what their next steps will be after graduation, four students at Pope High School are showcasing their new lifesaving invention on the national stage.

Ishaan, Ammar, Ekansh, and Kenneth are all seniors at Pope, and spent months creating a product called Medi-Loc.

It is a product designed to help senior citizens or those with a neurodegenerative disease, such as Alzheimer’s, take their medicine in a safe and effective way. Using their app that works on any computer or smartphone, someone would need to scan their fingerprint into the device, which ensures the correct person is there. The device then dispenses the pills for someone to easily take.

The product also reminds users when it is time to take their medicine, an issue Ammar has seen firsthand with his grandmother.

“My grandmother suffers from Type 2 Diabetes, and due to this, she takes medicine every day. Growing up with her — she has lived with me my whole life — I’ve seen her pull out a plastic pill tray from the dollar store, and I’ve always wondered what would happen if she took the wrong pill or double-dosed,” Ammar said.

With help from their math teacher, Julie Kokan, the students entered the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow

competition, which accepts entries from sixth- through 12th-grade groups nationwide.

Initially, the group was recognized as one of the 500 schools remaining, but they’ve since found out that they’re one of the last 100 groups in contention for this incredible recognition.

“There’s a lot of students in Cobb County and for us to be the last ones representing us in this competition is really special,” said Ishaan.

Pope is one of only four schools in Georgia remaining in the competition and the only Cobb County school left.

By making the top 100, this group of seniors has already earned more than $10,000 for Pope High School. If they advance to the top 10 and become national finalists, Pope will receive an additional $100,000 through this competition.

While these students are proud to present Cobb, they understand their creation could have a greater impact far beyond money.

“They’ve worked so hard to make a device that can be used out there in the world, and I think they’re going to change the world,” said Kokan.

To learn more about the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, visit www.samsung.com/us/solvefortomorrow/ about.

Announcements on national finalists and winners are expected in the coming months.
