August always sneaks up on us, doesn’t it? One moment we’re soaking up summer—and the next, we’re back to packing lunches, setting early alarms, and navigating carpool lines. As East Cobb gears up for another school year, this issue of EAST COBBER is here to help you ease into the season with inspiration, information, and a little local flavor.
In this issue, we celebrate the start of school with stories that remind us what makes this community so special. One standout is Logan Richardson, a Mabry Middle School student recognized for his quick thinking and heroic actions—just one example of the incredible young people growing up in East Cobb.
We also highlight the return of one of our most beloved traditions: the EAST COBBER Parade & Festival, set for Saturday, September 13. Whether you’ve attended every year or are planning to join us for the first time, it’s a day that brings our whole community together.
You’ll also find our annual Dining Guide, perfect for busy weeknights when dinner out is the easiest option—and our pages are full of local stories, events, and opportunities to connect.
Here’s to new beginnings and a strong start to the school year!

ATLANTA SWIM ACADEMY CELEBRATES
40 YEARS OF MAKING WAVES
Family-owned swim school in East Cobb reflects on its community roots, growth, and over four million lessons taught
By Marie Muir
Atlanta Swim Academy’s original location, where it all began in 1985. What started as a small scuba and swim training center has grown into a 13,000-square-foot aquatic hub serving thousands of East Cobb families.
Walk into Atlanta Swim Academy on Johnson Ferry Road and you’ll feel a unique warmth wash over your soul. Water splashes, the hum of parents chatting in the viewing room, and a rhythmic chorus of “kick, kick, kick” from instructors mix with children’s laughter in the pool. Murals of colorful sea life paint each wall, and a newly installed bronze dolphin statue greets visitors from the rooftop. For East Cobb families, this is more than a local swim school.
This year, Atlanta Swim Academy (ASA) is celebrating 40 years of helping kids become confident, capable swimmers
while building a strong sense of community.
What started in 1985 as a scuba and swim training center by Brad Grzelka’s parents, Ron and Barb, has grown into a 13,000-square-foot aquatic facility with three climate-controlled indoor pools, including a junior Olympic-sized lane pool. Brad, who attended Wood Acres and Walton High School, grew up on the pool deck.
Today, ASA teaches more than 2,000 children each week. Swimmers range in age from 3 months to early teens. The year-round program focuses on water
safety, developmental milestones and fun. Toddlers blow bubbles, sing songs and play games in beginner levels like Baby Splash and Guppies – all while learning essential water safety.
After years of working in the business, Brad had a vision for growth and expansion. In 2006, that dream became a reality. He took over the family business 25 years ago and helped expand the facility and shift the focus entirely to swim instruction. “We’re teaching kids a lifelong skill, and we’re doing it in a clean, safe, welcoming place with amazing instructors who care,” Brad says.
Atlanta Swim Academy’s expanded facility on Johnson Ferry Road features three indoor pools, including a junior Olympic-sized Lane pool—reflecting 40 years of growth, innovation, and commitment to water safety in East Cobb.
instruction—building comfort and confidence from the very first splash.
That family-focused atmosphere is what sets ASA apart. Some instructors first learned to swim at the academy and now teach the next generation. “We’re three generations deep at this point,” says HR manager Adria Dennis, a former swim coach. “You can tell this place is different from a corporate swim school. It feels like family.”
Safety and training are top priorities, with all staff undergoing Red Cross certification and ongoing development. ASA’s Parent Portal app tracks student progress and makes class scheduling easy. The space is spotless, with eight full-time maintenance staff and a long-standing A+ health rating. Atlanta Swim Academy is open seven days a week and offers both
group and private lessons, as well as free trial classes for new families.
As students progress through creatively named levels like Otters, Sea Turtles and Triggerfish, they build water confidence. We also offer a FREE Baby Splash class for 3- to 5-month-olds, designed to introduce your little one to the water in a gentle and playful way. Graduates of advanced levels can join SwimFit, ASA’s noncompetitive swim team for ages 8 to 12.
Beyond lessons, ASA runs Camp H2O every summer and partners with local schools and organizations to give back to the community throughout the year.
In 2023, Brad received the USSSA Humanitarian Award, honoring his outstanding service and community impact. “We believe in giving back,” says Brad, who also served on the national board for the United States Swim School Association.
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Atlanta Swim Academy will host a community festival on Oct. 11, featuring games, food, fun for the whole family and 1,000 free hot dogs.
“We’ve changed a lot over the years,” Brad says, “but our mission hasn’t. We’re here to build stronger swimmers and a stronger community.”
The academy is located at 732 Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta. To learn more, visit atlantaswimacademy.com or call/text 770-973-3120.

COLLEGE STUDENTS FIND SUPPORT CLOSE TO HOME, THANKS TO LIFE FOUNDATION
In a quiet corner of Marietta, a small nonprofit is making a mighty difference in the lives of college students. Life Foundation, established in 1965 by Drs. Sid and Nell Williams, began as a way to support chiropractic students. Today, it has grown into a vital resource for students across the Southeast who are struggling with more than just exams and essays.
Step inside the Life Foundation’s headquarters and you’ll find shelves of food, school supplies, and bins of donated household goods. “We’re here to fill the gaps,” explains CEO Dr. Kim Williams. “Many students face food insecurity, unstable housing, or can’t afford basics. We step in when no one else does.”
Each year, the foundation supports more than 1,800 students from over 100 colleges and universities. Through $1,000 grants, Life Foundation helps students stay enrolled, while also providing clothing, hygiene products, furniture, and even Christmas trees for those spending the holidays alone.
This August, Life Foundation is going even further. The nonprofit will host its Back to School Bash on August 20, a festive event sponsored by Embassy Suites by Hilton (Kennesaw Town Center) and Pochino Italy. Students will receive free school supplies, and the first 40 students
will take home computer monitors. Guests can also enter to win a one-night hotel stay or gift cards to Pochino. “It’s one more way we help students feel seen and supported,” says Dr. Kim Williams.
As Life Foundation expands its reach, a powerful new partnership is fueling its mission. In 2024, the organization joined forces with the Cobb Community Foundation to create a dedicated fund supporting college student essentials. This collaboration strengthens local ties and opens the door for more sustainable, community-driven support.
The need is growing—and so is the call for help. Life Foundation is always seeking financial contributions and in-kind donations such as furniture, clothing, school supplies, or even holiday decorations. Volunteers are especially needed during the holidays. “When donated, we distribute turkeys and hams so students can enjoy a holiday meal, and provide gloves and hats for cold weather,” says Dr. Kim Williams. “People don’t always realize how much students need, but the need is there—and we’re doing everything we can to meet it.”

East Cobb’s Favorite Tradition Returns: The 27th Annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival
Mark your calendars—East Cobb’s most cherished community event is back! On Saturday, September 13, the 27th Annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival will once again bring neighbors, local businesses, schools, and families together for a day full of hometown pride and family fun.
The festivities kick off at 10 a.m. with the EAST COBBER Parade, a lively procession that has become a hallmark of East Cobb life. The one-mile parade route begins in front of the Princeton Lakes subdivision (1223 Johnson Ferry Road), travels south on Johnson Ferry Road, and turns onto Olde Towne Parkway. Along the way, spectators will be treated to an exciting lineup of high school marching bands, colorful floats, scout troops, sports teams, local nonprofits, and more.
And let’s not forget the sweet part—it’s affectionately known as the “candy parade” for good reason! Parade participants come prepared with bags of candy to toss to the cheering crowds, making it a highlight for kids and parents alike.
Following the parade, the celebration continues at the EAST COBBER Festival, starting around 11 a.m. and held in the north parking lot of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church (955 Johnson Ferry Road). The festival transforms the space into a festive hub of activity with local entertainment, carnival games, a variety of vendor booths, and delicious food options from East Cobb restaurants and food trucks.
Kids will especially love the face painting, moonwalks, and carnival games, while adults can explore booths showcasing handmade goods, jewelry, community organizations, and more. Whether you’re a longtime resident or new to the area, the EAST COBBER Festival offers a unique opportunity to connect with your neighbors and support the local businesses and groups that make East Cobb thrive.
“This event has always been about more than just a parade or a festival—it’s about celebrating the people and organizations that make East Cobb such a desirable community,” says Laren Brown, publisher of EAST COBBER and founder of the parade. “Year after year, it still fills me with joy to see families lining the streets, kids waving at floats, and neighbors coming together to support one another.”
This year’s event is made possible thanks to the generous support of CertaPro Painters and Custom Disposal, whose sponsorship helps keep this tradition alive and growing.
The EAST COBBER Parade & Festival is more than just an event—it’s a celebration of what makes East Cobb such a special place to live. Come for the fun, catch some candy, and enjoy an unforgettable day of community connection.

WHY “JUST A SMALL CAVITY” CAN TURN INTO A BIG PROBLEM
It’s easy to brush off the idea of a small cavity. After all, if it can be quickly filled with a toothcolored material, what’s the harm in waiting a little while or skipping flossing here and there? Many patients don’t realize that when a cavity forms between the teeth, especially where the toothbrush can’t reach, the structure of the tooth becomes significantly compromised. That “tiny” problem can quickly escalate into something much more serious, painful, and expensive.
When decay starts between the teeth, your dentist can’t simply patch it up from the side. To access and remove the decay, we have to drill through the top of the tooth and cut away the side. This permanently weakens the tooth’s natural structure. And while composite fillings are designed to
blend beautifully with your natural teeth, they aren’t nearly as strong as enamel. Over time, these fillings break down, develop small gaps, and can even begin to leak bacteria into the tooth again. Worse, repeated biting and chewing on a filled tooth can eventually cause it to crack. When that happens, the simple filling might turn into a crown, a root canal—or in some cases, complete loss of the tooth.
The good news? These issues are almost entirely preventable. Daily flossing, thorough brushing, and drinking plenty of water with a neutral pH can go a long way in keeping your enamel strong and cavity-free. Avoiding sugary and acidic snacks and beverages also helps protect those tight spaces between your teeth. For patients at higher risk of decay, we often recommend a pH-balancing rinse
like CariFree, which can neutralize acids in the mouth and support a healthier oral environment.
Your hygienist isn’t being overly cautious when she reminds you to floss. It’s her way of helping you avoid future dental work, discomfort, and cost. When it comes to cavities, prevention truly is the best treatment. Don’t wait for “just a small cavity” to become a big deal. Take care of your teeth now, and they’ll take care of you for years to come.

COBB JUNIOR CHIEFS SELECTED FOR NATIONAL INLINE HOCKEY PROGRAM
By Adam Darby
When it comes to being recognized on a national level, it’s often a challenge for young athletes to make the cut. But for the Cobb County Junior Chiefs roller hockey team, an astonishing four players have been accepted into Inline Hockey USA’s National Development Program (NDP). Led by the Head of the Organization and Head Coach Nick Venezia, the team is currently celebrating the wonderful news of their acceptance while continuing to practice hard to prepare for the upcoming games. Coach Venezia couldn’t be happier to see his players giving it their all and playing at their best level.
“The coolest part of this is giving kids some forever memories,” said Coach Venezia. “The parents are such a huge part of our success...it’s because of their buy in that we can push them hard to become their best. And they know we are always there for the kids.”
Inline Hockey USA’s NDP Showcase Tournament offers young players the chance to compete against other skilled players from across the country. The program recently tasted victory in June, winning two Tournament of Roller Hockey Series (TORHS) National Championship trophies, with each trophy representing the 10u and 12u age divisions, respectively. But now, the players enjoy bringing their talents to the rink on a grander scale.
“The National Development Showcase, which the boys are participating in, is their first taste of representing their country and experiencing international competition, playing against Canada as well,” said Coach Venezia. “From there, the selection takes the top 10 skaters and two goalies at each age group from the East Coast, Central U.S., and West Coast and plays them against one another and the top players selected from Canada in a tournament.”
The four players being recognized for their achievements on the rink include Ryan Mannion and Luke Davis for the 10u East division, along with Kyle Zhang and Stephen Parlatore for the 12u East division, respectively. These young athletes could not be more excited to be a

part of this team while continuing to compete as part of the program.
“It’s just a great culture and everyone’s really a part of this team and we all love each other,” said Kyle Zhang. “I was really excited because we get to go and play some of the best players in the country.”
For years, the USA Inline NDP has provided a platform for nurturing and developing young talent in the sport of inline hockey. Founded by current and former members of Team USA Inline Hockey, the mission of the USA Inline National Development program is to “help identify and develop players of potential world-class ability and prepare them for international competition.” As they continue to practice for the upcoming tournament at the Northeast Cobb YMCA, these four players are ready to put their skills to the test and give it their all in the national competition.
“It is exciting to [be accepted into the program] and I am excited to play against all these different teams,” said Luke Davis. “I love playing on this team because the coach is amazing and my teammates are so fun to be around.”
To learn more about the team and follow upcoming events and accomplishments, visit their website at www. CobbJuniorChiefs.com or follow them on Instagram at www.instagram.com/CobbCountyJuniorChiefs.

Classes and workshops include all kinds of art events; painting, drawing, wood-carving, glass-etching, sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, Cricut-making, pottery, and more. “Just last week I was approached by someone who wants to hold Majohng here for the public to enjoy, so beginner and advanced Mahjong will begin soon!”, she recently said.
Exhibits in the gallery include quite a variety of local talent. Visitors can enjoy painting, drawing, photography, and mixed media, ranging from traditional
to contemporary. The public is invited to support these folks, visit the center, and purchase their works. The grand opening of the center is Saturday, August 23, 11-2pm. Stop by and visit!
The center is also available for gatherings and events, including parties or rental space for birthdays, anniversaries, team-building, homeschool gatherings, or any occasion. With two full kitchens on site, groups can enjoy large open areas with amenities. Events can be customized to the group’s needs, and any of the art disciplines can be utilized. Paint parties are a favorite,
but guests can also choose and enjoy blanket-making, wood-burning, or claybuilding classes, just to name a few.
Our area is fortunate to have many creative studios and centers, and each one of us brings our own unique personal touch to the events we offer. Peachtree Art Center specializes in variety, so no matter the age, skill level, or area of art interest, there is something for everyone. There are lots of class choices from many talented and knowledgeable artist instructors. As a Bob Ross instructor, Angela also carries the full line of Bob Ross painting supplies in the retail shop, which is a big plus to those who enjoy that quality of paint, brushes, and other items.
Peachtree Art Center is the latest community go-to for all sorts of programs and classes, and a welcoming spot for everyone in the community to pick up a new hobby, gather with friends, enjoy a stroll through the gallery, or just come and sit for a coffee break. AT WORK: THE 2025 GREAT SOUTHEAST POLLINATOR CENSUS
The Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County (MGVOCC) invite residents to take part in the 2025 Great Southeast Pollinator Census on August 22 and 23—a fast, fun, and impactful citizen science project.
Now in its seventh year, the Pollinator Census engages thousands of volunteers across five southeastern states to spend just 15 minutes counting pollinating insects. Participants observe one flowering plant, identify visiting pollinators using online guides, and submit their findings. It’s a perfect activity for families, students, scouts, and garden groups to support critical conservation efforts.
The MGVOCC will host in-person counting events at local demonstration gardens, and offer educational support online. Visit gsepc.org for insect ID tools, tally sheets, and creative ideas to get kids and neighbors involved.
For an in-depth look at the project, register for the free Grow Virtually webinar on Tuesday, August 12 at 7pm, featuring Becky Griffin, UGA Extension’s Pollinator Census Coordinator. She’ll discuss pollinator ecology and how everyone can help protect these essential species. Register at bit.ly/2025GSEPC-Webinar.
Join the count and be part of a movement that’s making a difference—one pollinator at a time.

THIS TURKS & CAICOS RESORT IS THE PERFECT FAMILY ESCAPE
Atlanta parents, imagine this: turquoise waves, powdery white sands, and a direct flight that gets you there faster than your kid’s tablet battery dies. That’s exactly what awaits you at South Bank in Turks & Caicos. With non-stop service from ATL to Providenciales, this fresh oceanfront retreat is custom-built for families who want luxury without the hassle. And here’s the sweetener: this part of the Turks & Caicos isn’t overrun by cruise ship crowds. Translation? More beach for you, fewer selfie sticks in the background.
Under 3 Hours to Paradise
Delta makes it easy with daily direct flights that clock in at around 2 hours 45 minutes. You could be sipping your first island cocktail by early afternoon while the kids are already splashing in the pool. No layovers, no chaotic airport sprints, just a breezy trip from ATL to bliss.
Family-Friendly Villas: Room to Roam, Space to Breathe Ocean Estate Villas
Got a big crew? These sprawling four- to six-bedroom villas (think 3,150 to 8,000 square feet) come with private pools, floor-to-ceiling ocean views, and full kitchens. Picture yourself flipping pancakes for breakfast, savoring lunch on the terrace, and watching the kids bolt out the door toward the lagoon. It’s a home—but way better, because it comes with ocean breezes and butler service.
Lagoon Villas
For families with younger kids, these villas are gold. With three to five bedrooms, private pools, and direct access to the gentle, 5-acre lagoon, they’re ideal for little swimmers who need calm, protected water. Plus, the lush gardens offer plenty of hide-and-seek opportunities.
Lagoon & Marina: Water Fun for All Ages
At the heart of South Bank lies a lagoon so serene, it
feels like nature’s own swimming pool. Powder-soft sand, swaying palms, and glassy water invite kids to play safely while teens and adults paddleboard, kayak, or snorkel nearby. Picture this: you, Rum Punch in hand, lounging on your deck while keeping a relaxed eye on the fun.
Not bad, right?
Built for Multigenerational Magic
South Bank’s villas are thoughtfully designed with spacious living areas and separate bedrooms across two levels—perfect for families traveling with grandparents, cousins, or even the nanny (because hey, you deserve a date night). Togetherness when you want it, privacy when you need it.
Whether you want to chill as a clan or chase adventure, South Bank is the rare spot that lets you have it both ways—without sacrificing comfort, style, or sanity. Book here - southbank.gracebayresorts.com.

MABRY STUDENT RECOGNIZED AS HERO FOR SAVING HIS GRANDMA’S LIFE
Rising Mabry Middle School 8th-grader Logan Richardson is known around the school for being helpful and kind. Recently, he also proved how aware and calm he could be in an emergency, earning him recognition from his school and his family as a Hero.
On Saturday, May 10, Logan Richardson was home alone with his Grandma when she began to choke. Logan asked his Grandma if he should call 911, and she shook her head no, so he called his parents. Logan quickly realized this was serious and decided to call 911 anyway. The operator instructed Logan how to give his Grandma the Heimlich maneuver. When she eventually stopped breathing and became unconscious, Logan administered CPR with instructions from the 911 operator.
“Logan’s Grandma was taken to the hospital and eventually released and is OK due to his quick thinking and reaction,” said Mabry counselor Amy Hinsley. “Logan is a true hero!”
A few days after the scary experience, Mabry Principal Jonathan Tanner recognized Logan for his heroic actions. During one of his classes, Principal Tanner surprised Logan, sharing his story with classmates and recognizing him with a plaque for his brave and life-saving actions. Logan’s parents, Mrs. Hinsley, and Mabry Nurse Samantha Stephens were also in attendance.
“We are all so proud of him and tremendously in awe of his bravery and courage to make life-saving decisions,” said Logan’s mom. “He has always been a kind, loving, and smart child. He’s always there for his friends and family to lean on, and this just proves how trustworthy and loving he really is!”
Nurse Stephens also presented Logan with three beads that she earned while working in the AFLAC Unit at Children’s Hospital.
“Patients could give certain beads to their healthcare team members to celebrate milestones during their treatments. It is called the Beads of Courage program. I am passing along three of the beads I received to Logan to celebrate and remember this heroic action,” Nurse Stephens explained.
From left to right: Mabry Middle School counselor Amy Hinsley, current 8th grader Logan Richardson, nurse Samantha Stephens, and Principal Jonathan Tanner. Logan was honored by Mabry Middle School for his heroic actions.
The three beads she gave him were:
• Hope & Will: Awarded to a healthcare professional or an individual who showed great courage, compassion, and empathy when providing care.
• Wingman: Someone who flies beside you, who protects you, and who watches your back when you feel as if you are flying solo.
• Ladybug: A symbol of good fortune, good luck, and protection.
She also gave him a keychain CPR mask. “An emergency can occur anywhere, anytime, to anyone, and even children can come upon a scene that requires emergency response,” Nurse Stephens said. “If we educate and prepare ourselves, then more efficient care can be provided, and a life potentially saved.”
Thanks to Logan’s clear thinking and decisive actions, his Grandma Nina is alive today. Asked about what he learned from the experience, Logan was quick to put it all in perspective.
“Try to stay calm and follow your gut,” the Mabry hero said.

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY
By Ginger Markert-Brusa
DeAnn McEntire wished she had gotten healthy before now. Hear her story.
My name is DeAnn McEntire. I am 60 years old and a retired schoolteacher with 35 years of teaching experience. I have been married to Gary for 36 years, and we have one son. We recently became grandparents. Our granddaughter is one of the reasons I joined Sparkle Wellness. I knew I had to get healthy and fit to best care for her.
I joined in July 2024, lost 20 pounds, and am maintaining that weight loss. I knew I needed to change my health and eating habits after my father passed away last year. I was stressed and did not care what I put in my body. I had not been taking good care of myself, which showed in every aspect of my life. Boo Gibson and I have been friends for years, and I knew how Sparkle had changed her life. I had been doing races with the Sparkle community for a few years and saw the difference it was making in their lives. I reached out to Jacynta Harb, and she got me started on this journey of health and wellness.
One of my biggest changes was learning to eat healthier. Jacynta and I visited Whole Foods and Kroger together. She showed me healthy alternatives. I learned to read labels and ingredients. If you cannot pronounce it, do not put it in your body. I am eating foods I did not know existed and like them. That is a huge breakthrough for me.
I work out 3 to 4 times weekly. I learned the importance of strength training, which has made an enormous difference. I also walk 3 miles twice a week. I do at least one race every month. I do not run, but I walk fast. This is the thing I love most about Sparkle. I am in a community of people who inspire and encourage me to do my best every day. No one is left behind in this journey of wellness.
My biggest challenge is falling back into old eating habits. I love Chick-fil-A and would eat there at least twice a week. I still go, but not as often, and I choose healthier options. My biggest downfall is their sweet tea. I now order half and half sweet/unsweet tea. Jacynta has a quote in her office: “Don’t give up what you want MOST for what you want at the moment!” It is all about choices. I choose what I put into my mouth and the activities I do.
Before: DeAnn McEntire taking her first steps toward a healthier lifestyle. After: Strong, confident, and glowing in blue—DeAnn lost 20 pounds, gained a healthier mindset, and is now embracing life (and grandmotherhood!) with sparkle and strength. Before After
Top 3 Challenges
1. Falling into old eating habits. Eat a piece of fruit for a snack instead of a cookie. (Do not even buy it.)
2. Talking myself out of a workout. Get up in the morning and work out. I feel better when it is over.
3. Stress eating. Eating _____ now will make me feel better. It does not make me feel better later.
It took a long time to choose to be an official member of Sparkle. Now that I am here, I do not know what took me so long. I feel better, look better, and finish races faster. Sparkle is not a diet but a lifestyle change – your food, mind, and activity choices. The best part is you are not alone on the journey. Sparkle is a network of people encouraging, supporting, and lifting you up when you fall.
Registration is now open for Fall. For information on Sparkle Wellness, contact Jacynta Harb at www.sparkleanewyou.com or call 404-242-5062.
