American Legion Sponsors Girls and Boys State
Boys State and Girls State are summer leadership and citizenship programs sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary for high school students between their junior and senior years. Boys and Girls State programs both began in 1937 and are held in each of the U.S. states (excluding Hawaii), usually on a college campus within that state. In general, male and female programs are held separately, but at least seven states—Georgia, Nebraska, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New Hampshire —host Boys’ and Girls’ State on the same campus on the same week.
Georgia Boys/Girls State is a comprehensive one week course in state and local government. It is a “leadership action program” where qualified male and female high school rising seniors take part in a practical government course. It is designed to develop a working knowledge of the structure of government and to impress upon the citizen the fact that our government is just what we make it. Along the way delegates have the opportunity to learn the political process by organizing a mythical 51st state. Each level of government is run by those delegates who are elected to serve. Instruction is presented on the law and court system, parliamentary procedure and Georgia political history.
American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. It is a participatory program where each
participant becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government. At American Legion Girls and Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a citizen. The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.
High school juniors are selected by local American Legion Posts to attend the program. Expenses associated with attending this program are paid by a sponsoring American Legion Post, a local business or another community-based organization. Girls State and Boys State programs are intended for the most outstanding students, from the standpoint of leadership, character, and scholarship in the high schools. Only those girls and boys who will enthusiastically devote their time to increasing their knowledge, while at the same time advancing the whole Boys/ Girls State Program, are chosen.
“Boys State and Girls State promotes a respect for our government, our leaders and our military,” said Bill Secreast, Boys and Girls State coordinator for the Marietta American Legion.
The 2011 Session will be held June 12-18 at Georgia Southern University. Interested students should contact their high school Guidance Counselor for more information.
