On August 15, approximately 36,000+ East Cobb children will head back to school. Education is a top priority, a shared value, in East Cobb County. It is our community’s strength. The reputation of our public schools’ top test scores and quality learning environments draws people to East Cobb. Even if you don’t have a child in school we all have a stake in our community’s educational system—from our property values to future leaders to future employees. On pages 6 -16, we pulled together those education stats, school by (East Cobb) school - which provide evidence for East Cobb’s great reputation for its schools. While the test scores offer a quick take that helps parents and teachers measure a school’s success, it is important to note that beyond the rankings, each school needs to be assessed for other qualities, such as: strong school leadership, parental and community support, creating an environment where students can learn and grow, access to up-to-date textbooks and technology. I have three children attending schools in East Cobb: Lee will be a sophomore at Walton High School; Nikos will be an eighthgrader at Dickerson Middle School; and, Eleni will be joining her brother at Dickerson—so I have a very personal interest in the information presented in our Back to School Guide!
I understand the test scores and school’s stated goals are starting points to evaluate a good school for my child/children to attend. But more importantly, I am able to collect on-the-ground intelligence by attending PTA meetings, volunteering in the classroom, and/or bumping into moms at lunchroom visits. Like a lot of moms and dads, I am constantly making sure my son or daughter is in a place where they experience the excitement — and the relevance — of learning, and where the next generation of intelligent, hard-working, disciplined leaders is being nourished.
When deciding to dine out, I hope you’ll refer to our 15th Annual Dining Directory (pages 34-47) for inspiration. With every restaurant in East Cobb listed, you’ll discover that a special evening or a night out with friends can be enjoyed right around the corner.

As Co-Presidents of the Eastern Cobb County Council (ECCC) of PTAs, Stephanie Daniels and Anita Jones help 35 East Cobb PTAs find ways to improve the academic lives of East Cobb children. Ms. Jones explains their goal as Co-Presidents is, “to see that all children regardless of cultural background, are successful so they can reach their highest potential in, not only school, but in life.”
As Co-Presidents, Stephanie and Anita spend countless hours attending and planning meetings, problem-solving for PTA presidents, and participating in workshops.
Anita lives in the Chastain Glenn subdivision with her husband, Lennie, and her 14-year-old son, Colin Hagins, a rising freshman at Sprayberry High School. Stephanie lives in the Creekside Bluff neighborhood with her husband, Richard; and 11-year-old twin boys that are in the 6th grade at Mabry Middle School.
Anita and Stephanie both agree that the best part about East Cobb is the quality of life it offers to families and having the support of parents in the schools, which yield great learners and quality schools.

Cobb County Board of Education
The Cobb County Board of Education consists of seven elected members who appoint a superintendent responsible for the administration of the system. Local, state, and federal funds contribute to a $841.9 million operating budget. Elected to serve four-year terms, each school board member votes on issues that affect school curriculum and instruction, auxiliary services, personnel and administration. The Board of Education meets twice each month. The first meeting is a work session held the second Wednesday of each month. Work sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. The Board meets again the fourth Thursday of each month to vote on agenda items developed at the work session. The Thursday meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. Each meeting is preceded by a 30-minute public-comment session during which members of the public may address the Board. Sign-up for public comment begins 30 minutes before the public comment session begins.

The Cobb Chamber is looking for business and community leaders to participate in the Teacher for a Day program on Tuesday, September 25, for Cobb County Schools and Thursday, September 27, for Marietta City Schools.
This innovative program asks the local business community to take a day away from the office and spend it in a classroom. Teacher for a Day gives business executives a true picture of public education in action. In one day you’ll see firsthand both the strengths and challenges that schools and teachers face.
The Cobb Chamber will place volunteers in Cobb and Marietta City schools to experience a day in the shoes of a teacher. Volunteers will work side-by-side with a Cobb County or Marietta City Teacher of the Year for a full school day. Applications are due Monday, September 10.

Cobb County School District Superintendent: Dr. Hinojosa
s Dr. Michael Hinojosa
Last year, Dr. Michael Hinojosa was named superintendent of the Cobb County School District, the nation’s 25th largest school district and the second largest in Georgia. Cobb County’s school system is among the largest in the United States and the second largest in Georgia. Approximately 107,000 students are
educated in 68 Elementary, 25 Middle and 16 High Schools, plus 2 Special Education Centers, 1 Adult Education Center and 1 ESOL Center. All schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Dr. Hinojosa’s career in public education, from teacher and coach to superintendent of six school systems, spans more than three decades. Dr. Hinojosa holds a doctorate in education from the University of Texas at Austin. His annual salary is $237,000.
He and his wife Kitty have two sons, one attending Harvard University and another attending Princeton University. He also has a son from a previous marriage who graduated from Texas Tech University.
Results from the 2012 Georgia Fifth Grade Writing Assessment show Cobb County students continue to outperform their peers across the state in writing skills. Cobb students’ average scale score of 217 is four points higher than the state score of 213; both the local and state averages dropped by a single point from 2011. Eighty-four percent of Cobb students met or exceeded expectations on the assessment, a one percent improvement over 2011.
Across the district, 37 Cobb elementary schools had mean scale scores higher than the state average. Schools with the greatest increase in students meeting or exceeding standards include Russell (+17 percent), Keheley (+16 percent), Compton (+16 percent), King Springs (+13 percent) and Acworth (+11 percent).
Overall, the five schools with the highest scale scores were King Springs (246), Tritt (246), Sope Creek (244), East Side (239), and Timber Ridge (238). Schools with the highest percentage of students meeting or exceeding expectations include Tritt (99 percent), Kennesaw Charter (99 percent), Sope Creek (98 percent), Due West (97 percent), and King Springs (97 percent).
As a part of the statewide testing program, the Fifth Grade Writing Assessment was administered in March and requires students to write a composition on an assigned topic. The assessment provides fifth graders with a measurement of their writing performance. The assessment includes different aspects of writing, or domains, which include Ideas, Organization, Style, and Conventions. Domains are rated on a scale of 1 to 5. Performance of Cobb fifth graders as a whole was similar across all domains, ranging from 2.9 in Conventions to 3.1 in Style. This information can help students, parents, and teachers understand areas where stu-
dents may need to focus their efforts to improve writing skills before taking the Eighth Grade Writing Assessment.
Each student paper is scored by professionals who have been trained to evaluate writing. Evaluators score student compositions on the four domains of effective writing (Ideas, Organization, Style, and Conventions), all of which should be present in a composition regardless of the topic.
The scale score range for the Grade 5 Writing Assessment is 100 to 350, and scores are reported in the following performance levels: Does Not Meet (100-199), Meets (200-249), and Exceeds (250-350). SAT Stats: East Cobb High Schools
The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and the American College Testing (ACT) are offered by The College Board several times during the year. These tests are not required by the state or school system, and are not administered by Cobb schools; however, most colleges and universities use SAT and/or ACT scores in determining student admission. The SAT is used to predict a student’s potential for success in the first year of college and is required for admission to most colleges and universities. Most college-bound students take one or both of these tests during either their junior or senior year. The Cobb County Board of Education approved the $841.9 million school system budget for Fiscal Year 2013 during a special called meeting Monday, May 21. The Board backed a revised budget recommendation by Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa that includes three furlough days, a 177-day school year and no changes to elementary school media paraprofessional positions. In a separate vote, the Board approved an amended 20122013 school year calendar with furlough days placed on Dec. 21, 2012, Feb. 15, 2013, and May 30, 2013.
Faced with a shortfall in excess of $60 million due to continued decreases in local property tax revenue and state funding cuts, the Board approved the following spending reductions and measures to balance the FY13 budget:
• Increased class sizes by 2 students (on average)
• 350 teaching positions will go unfilled
• Reduced school year from 180 days to 177 days
• 3 furlough days for all employees
• Delayed step increase for eligible employees to mid-year
• Use $23 million in SPLOST II excess funds to lower the property tax millage rate
• Use $28.2 million in reserve funds to help offset deficit

A tune-up not only provides preventative maintenance, it also identifies worn out parts. Regular tune-ups will ensure that your car will operate at its optimal condition. When a car’s engine components are maladjusted or not functioning properly, fuel is not burned correctly or adequately, increasing emissions and particulate matter from the car’s tailpipe. A standard tune-up will ensure that the main components responsible for proper fuel combustion like ignition timing, filters and spark plugs are replaced or adjusted to work properly.
Increases Vehicle Gas Mileage
A tune-up makes a car more fuel efficient. An improperly tuned car cannot burn fuel properly, creating a detriment not only for the outside air but to the car’s fuel economy. A tuneup ensures that the main components supporting maximal fuel economy for a car – ignition timing, spark plugs, filters and oxygen sensors – are replaced or adjusted.

Eastside Baseball Tigers are State Champs
s The 9u Eastside Baseball Tigers, based out of Fuller’s Park, won the Dizzy Dean 9 and under State Championship on July 6. 23 teams from across the state were invited to compete in the tournament which was held at Kennworth Park in Acworth. DJ Neezy Entertains East Cobb
If you want to host an event that everyone will talk about the next day, it needs more than music, it needs DJ Neezy Entertainment. Ben
Needle is a high school social studies teacher by day and DJ Neezy on nights, weekends and summer days when he provides music and fun for all types of events. Born in Seattle, Ben grew up in East Cobb and lives here today with his wife and three (soon-to-be four) children.
“I’ve always loved music,” says Ben. “When I attended bar mitzvah celebrations as a preteen, I was always the first one on the dance floor and the last one to leave.” Despite a love of singing and four years of choir in high school, Ben recognized that he didn’t have the vocal talent to be a singer. His love of music stayed dormant for years, until he began writing raps and R&B jams for his classes.
Ben enjoys sharing his love of music and fun with others, so he started his DJ business two years ago. He considers himself an “entertainment provider” and will perform at any type of event, whether it’s a lastminute pool party or a wedding that takes months of planning.
“When I work with an engaged couple, I meet with them multiple times to ensure that their reception is going to be the experience they want,” says Ben.
Ben works closely with all his hosts to ensure they get the best experience possible. His services are not cookie-cutter, and he customizes his DJ performance for each party. In addition to weddings, he provides music for birthday parties, karaoke parties, bar/bat mitzvahs, sweet sixteen parties, anniversaries, school dances, corporate events and fundraisers.
Ben enjoys performing at events with adults and children and is always in the middle of the fun. He will judge hula hoop contests, hold the limbo stick and even lead a conga line.

St. Ann’s Sends 30 Student Missionaries to Tampa
In June, St. Ann’s sent a team of thirty middle school students from neighboring East Cobb schools to the Catholic HEART Work Camp in Tampa. Giving up a week of their summer, the missionaries worked at 3 different locations in an effort to revitalize the community and beautify homes for the elderly, disabled and neglected. “The experience was life changing,” said Timmy Riordan, a student at The Walker School who participated in the mission trip. “I realized that they are just like you and me and with a little help, we can make a difference in their life.”
At the Pinellas Hope Homeless Shelter located in Clearwater, a temporary emergency shelter for 250 homeless men and women whose goal is to position the residents toward self-sufficiency, the student missionaries painted, landscaped and cleaned the living areas. In addition, they rebuilt stables for a horse rescue facility and renovated a private residence.
Overall, CHWC will host 47 camps around the country with over 13,000 teens in attendance throughout the year. St. Ann’s EDGE program, middle school youth ministry, spearheaded by Jackie Kmet, Jim Herrel and Fr. John Gabriel, will send another group to the camp in Charleston, along with sending a group of teens to Project Fiat in El Salvador. “We are very proud of our youth and their faithful service to others,” said Fr. Tom Reilly, pastor of St. Ann’s Catholic Church.

Nibble and Noshfest To Be Held Labor Day Weekend
For the third year, Nibble and Noshfest entices the community with food and entertainment over Labor Day weekend: Sunday, September 2: 11am to 7pm and Monday, September 3: 11am to 4pm. The festival takes place in the parking of lot of Temple Kol Emeth, 1415 Old Canton Road in Marietta/East Cobb.
Nibble and Noshfest (Noshfest, for short) is a two-day festival that provides visitors with a taste of Jewish and other ethnic and traditional foods sold in “sample-size” portions, priced from $1 to $4 – in other words, the premier version of “Taste of . . .” event over Labor Day Weekend!
In addition to the food, there will be a range of entertainment from music to live interactive demonstrations. Scores of artists and craftspeople will be selling their wares in this lively setting. Many Cobb and Atlanta community
organizations will be present to provide insight to life in our fabulous city. Tours of the culture-rich Temple Kol Emeth’s sanctuary will be available to all patrons by historians of the congregation and clergy. Children will be wowed by huge jump castles and other great activities.
The festival will be once again taking part in the HAVE A NOSH, SHARE A NOSH program. Visitors are encouraged to bring 2 non-perishable food items that will be donated to MUST MINISTRIES to fight hunger.
And for a great evening, plan on a “nosh and a show.” Enjoy dinner at Noshfest on Sunday and then attend Comedy Night at Noshfest at 7pm.

Wedding season is upon us, and it’s not only the brides who are in preparation mode. The Mothers of the Brides (M.O.B.’s) and Mothers of the Grooms (M.O.G.’s) are also getting ready to be in the spotlight.
After all, their roles extend far beyond providing around the clock emotional support to their soon-to-be-wedded children, or writing check after check to vendors. This is the M.O.B.’s and M.O.G.’s time to see close family and friends, and often meet an entire new family to whom they are now related, till death do you part!
This places the M.O.B.’s and G’s under a certain amount of pressure, and rightfully so. They come into the dermatologist’s office a few months or weeks before the wedding and all want the same thing: to look bright and refreshed, and sometimes a few years younger, for the upcoming nuptials. Of all of the requests that come up in weddings, helping the Moms prepare themselves is one of the most rewarding.
I have had the extreme pleasure of helping my mother prepare for two weddings. The first was that of my youngest sister, and the second is my own. In preparing her for these two events, I developed a top five treatment list for the MOB/MOG that addresses her particular concerns, and prepares her for the big day.
1. Botox and Dysport
We can’t talk the bride out of her ice sculpture shaped like her childhood pony, or the groom out of his bachelor party running with the bulls in Spain, but we can erase the lines that these ideas have put on your forehead. Botox and Dysport work wonders on those pesky lines between the eyebrows, like the ones that deepened when the caterer told you the price per head for a seated dinner. Instead of trying to strangle the caterer with your eyebrows, take a deep breath, and consider relaxing the grimacing muscles before the wedding. This is also effective for the forehead lines, like the ones that sprang up when your daughter requested rap music for her processional. Today’s seniors, for the most part, missed taking part in the explosion of home computer use which began in the early 1980s. But determined not to be left out, they are coming forward in large numbers to get on board with this new technology. Seniors are estimated to be the fastest growing Internet user group in the country, and with that comes the need for introductory and advanced level computer training. Beyond the Internet, seniors are learning to use computers for information and image processing, as well as games, home finances, and many other areas of interest for which computers can be applied.
In an effort to help train and educate our seniors, Cobb County Senior Centers have established computers and computer training at all five Senior Centers across the county:
• Poole Center (South Cobb)
• East Cobb
• North Cobb
• West Cobb
Called “Computers4Seniors”, Cobb senior residents are offered a variety of courses which were designed specifically for seniors. Class size is limited to six, and each senior has use of a computer during hands-on exercises in class. Classes are taught by volunteers who have extensive experience in using computers. Each course is accompanied by an illustrated training guide which reinforces what is taught in each training session. Often these guides walk students, step by step, through the actions introduced and performed in class. In addition to the instructor, whenever possible, an assisting coach will be present in the classroom to help answer questions, and assist students during hands-on exercises.
The Computers4Seniors program is offered in the Fall, Winter and Spring terms. Class registration for the fall term begins in late August. For more information, visit computers4seniors.org.

ELM (Enrichment of Life Movement) is a large independent non-profit, non-denominational learning organization for those 50 or older. They have met for 28 consecutive years in the First United Methodist Church building in Marietta on a quarterly basis. They meet on Tuesday of each week for eight weeks and offer an interesting variety of 45/66 courses, with up to three classes for a fee of $40.
Fall registration opened July 12th and continues through August 18, 2012, without a late fee. Classes begin September 11th and are open to residents of Cobb and surrounding counties alike.
