EARTH BEAT 2024

FESTIVAL programme

one love

one heart

one beat

We are grateful and honoured to be welcomed to Ātiu Creek by Ngāti Whātua (Te Uri-o-Hau) to host Earth Beat Festival 2024.

In alignment with our kaupapa and our commitment to the safety of the Earth Beat whānau, as well as the beauty of the whenua, it is with the utmost respect to Ngāti Whātua and their ancestors that we host Earth Beat at Ātiu Creek. Their blessing and involvement is fundamental for a peaceful and nourishing Earth Beat experience.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi workshop with Matua Rihari (Ngāti Whātua) will take place on Sunday (see workshops schedule on page 51). The workshop will look face-on into “The Heart of the Taniwha” and also touch on some local stories.

Temazcal is an ancient tradition, found throughout the Americas, that offers a holistic steam bath for the mind, body, and soul. It’s designed to represent the womb of mother earth, with participants entering the domeshaped structure to experience a rebirth. The ceremony involves a fire outside, with hot rocks placed inside and water poured over them to create steam. Temazcal provides physical benefits, like other steam rooms.

Temazcal is at 7am on Friday and Saturday. Registration is required at the info tent. Spaces are limited.

KAUPAPA

On March 20, 2017, New Zealand recognised in law that the Whanganui river is a living being. Parliament passed legislation declaring that Te Awa Tupua—the river and all its physical and metaphysical elements—is an indivisible, living whole and henceforth possesses “all the rights, powers, duties, and liabilities” of a legal person. Soon afterwards, based on the Whanganui precedent, 820 square miles of forests, lakes, and rivers—a former national park known as Te Urewera—also gained legal personhood. Soon a mountain, Taranaki, will become the third person.

E rere kau mai te awanui, mai te kahui maunga ki Tangaroa, Ko au te awa, ko te awa ko au—The great river flows from the mountains to the sea; I am the river, and the river is me.

The kaupapa/purpose of Earth Beat is predicated on the knowledge that Papatūānuku (Mother Earth) is a living entity, just as the Whanganui River and Te Uruwera are living entities.

The kaupapa/purpose of Earth Beat is to provide a platform for transformation and celebration that will inspire and empower new ways of living through strengthening our relationship and connection with Earth and, in turn, understanding our role as humans in the web of life.

Strengthening our relationship and connection with Earth also supports our individual wellbeing. The natural cycles of the Earth direct our biological processes and evolutionary unfoldment through longwave signals broadcasted from her core. She is always in communication with us.

Whakarongo ki a Papatūānuku.

Listen to her. Practice breathing, walking, and dancing in concert with her natural cycles moment-to-moment. This communication is vital for our wellbeing, our survival and beyond; beyond sustainable to regenerative, beyond potential problems—a world where individual contributions are aligned with the greater good and where we live in harmony with the natural rhythm of our bodies and the beat of the Earth. This is the essence of Earth Beat.

Earth Beat as a gathering helps us build a field of support, a feeling of whānau, guided by wairua, and motivated and inspired by the love (aroha) we have for each other and this beautiful place we call home.

ONE love ONE heart ONE BEAT

Earth Beat Festival 2024 will feature a diverse and highcalibre range of homegrown and international music!

This year’s festival will feature over 40 different genres, from classical, ambience and sound art, to deep and funky house grooves, to the outer limits of cosmic melodies and earth-resonant bass music.

BIGBADABOOM

2024 continues our exciting collaboration with NinthWavesound and Bigbada BOOM Sound System, for the Kaipara and Jah’s Bazaar Stages.

NINETHWAVESOUND

NinthWavesound is a feminist sound system, the only system of its kind in Aotearoa to have been hand-built by a woman and which promotes gender-balanced and femme-focused lineups. She will be powerfully amplifying the sound for the Kaipara stage.

Bigbada Boom Sound System. Aotearoa’s femme built reggae sound system, making big waves since its debut in 2022!

Founded by Queen Big Punch, Its focus is to acknowledge the roots and legacy of sound system culture spanning over 50 years from Jamaica, the UK to the entire world. Featuring the great spectrum of reggae music, from ska, roots, dub, jungle, all that is bass music and beyond.

Bigbada Boom is made up of vintage tech. Its design and set up is reminiscent of the old school sound, giving an authentic analogue feel of the 70s and 80s.

Along with its visual twist of colorful cartoony and playful appearance to match the warm sound it produces. Filling the room with joy and excitement, bringing back the vibes that once filled the dance halls of the past backed to the masses!

BREATHWORK

Marcel Hof

Why Breathwork? Stimulating the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system allows your body to get more relaxed, feel energised, feel alive and out of the mind. This will increase the power and potential available to us in our life. Inflammation and being too acidic is the beginning of almost all diseases. In 20 minutes of breathing we reduce our acidity, become more alkaline and cleanse the body of unneeded waste materials and carbon dioxide. Breathwork is the fastest way to alter our state of being and shift out of a negative mindset, and away from limiting beliefs. Adopting the practice connects us with our innate wisdom. This brings greater awareness to our self, life and the decisions we make, which leads to overall well-being and happiness. The BONUS? Breathing is FREE and available at any time!

Since the age of 13, Marcel Hof has been training and pushing himself to the limits, defying death while swimming beneath the ice. Marcel Hof explored the extremes, to regain physical and mental autonomy, alongside his brother Wim Hof, the Iceman, for more than 25 years. They tested the boundaries of human potential and now the rest of us can benefit. What they discovered is how to regain the innate ability to regulate the natural immune system, mental and physical health through the heart, mind, body connection with breath.

Tapora, also known as Okahukura is a 10,000-hectare peninsula extending about 15 kilometres into the central Kaipara Harbour. The Tapora Land and Coast Care Group was established in 2004 by local landowners’ and residents. Their vision was to rid the peninsula of introduced pests to restore the indigenous wildlife. Through voluntary levies and funding support from Auckland Council, an extensive trapping programme was implemented across the peninsula. Within the past 19 years we estimate 50,000 possums have been killed along with numerous mustelids, feral cats, hedgehogs, rats and rabbits and feral pigs. We are rewarded with increasing numbers of native birds and healthy forest ecosystems.

Earth Beat support the work of Tapora Land & Coast Care and Members of the Kaipara Moana Remediation Programme— together we are working to restore the health and mauri of the Kaipara Moana.

Visit taporalandandcoastcaregroup.co.nz for more information. Follow their work on Facebook and get involved: Tapora Land and Coast Care Group.

EARTH LOUNGE

In the 2024 edition of Earth Beat, we’re putting an emphasis on lounging— as a place for hearty and cozy conversations to warm your heart away. Bring a blanket, grab a pillow and a hot cup of chai or cacao for dedicated time with friends new or old.

KIDS ZONE

The Earth Beat Kids Zone provides children with opportunities for free play in nature, within a framework of respect for themselves, others, and the environment. The programme includes nature activities, stilt walking, circus acts, arts & crafts, and so much more. Check out the Kids Zone programme on page 19.

YOUTH STAGE

The Earth Beat Youth Stage is a space created by teens for teens (ages 13-18). “We, the Earth Beat Youth Team, have created a space where youth can feel safe, have fun, express themselves and learn new things in a festival village environment. Come along to the Youth Stage for live music, drinks and good vibes.” Check out the programme for workshops and music at the Youth Stage on page 16.
