Our students perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland, the world’s largest performing arts festival. They scale glaciers and study climate change in Iceland. They support public health campaigns in underserved communities across Latin America and conduct research in cutting-edge science labs. They intern with organizations ranging from the United Nations and the Smithsonian Institution to leading zoos and global technology companies. These aren’t ideas for someday. When everything’s derailed, Justin Garlitz stays on track. Justin Garlitz ’14 is a Supervisory Emergency Management Specialist for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In a past position with FEMA, he was deployed to the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, managing the aftermath of nearly 100,000 gallons of spilled toxic chemicals. His day-to-day includes coordinating FEMA deployments across the country, with a focus on natural disasters — hurricanes, storms, floods, and tornadoes.
“There’s a lot of opportunity to do good at FEMA, whether one is interested in disaster response, like me, nature-based solutions to climate change, environmental and historic preservation, or many other fields.”
The quickest route to med school? Earlham’s biology department. Sarah Dickman ’22 is currently an M.D. candidate at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Before beginning medical school, Sarah was a research technician at The Schepens Eye Research Institute, one of the nation’s top vision research centers, on the Harvard Medical School campus. She credits her time at Earlham with preparing her for groundbreaking work that is changing the future of vision science.

Nature Reserve System Hundreds of acres of protected areas on Earlham’s campus begin just steps from our academic buildings and residence halls. They include wooded trails, prairies, wetlands, and ponds where students conduct research, create pollinator gardens, explore the outdoors, and find space to reflect and recharge in nature year-round.
50-plus years of Outdoor Education Students gain experience in backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, and wilderness leadership while becoming part of a long tradition of adventure and exploration. Many set forth on August Wilderness, Earlham’s signature pre-orientation backpacking experience in Utah’s Uinta Mountains before their first semester even begins.

Every residence hall at Earlham is gender-inclusive and equipped with Wi-Fi, laundry, a full kitchen, and TV lounge — all with common spaces renovated in 2023. First-year halls: Barrett and Bundy, with living and learning options. All first-year students are part of an intentionally designed first-year community (because designing your life at Earlham starts day one). Those who want to go deeper can choose a focused community organized around Arts & Humanities, Business, Honors, Pre-Health, Social Sciences, or STEM.
Upperclass halls: Earlham Hall, Olvey-Andis, Mills, Warren, and Wilson. The latter three form a U-shape, hence their collective nickname “the U.”
Campus Houses: Upperclass students can find community living with a close-knit group of peers who have shared goals for the academic year. These houses are located on College Avenue and are centered around shared cultural backgrounds, hobbies, religions, or beliefs — even topics like sustainability, mindfulness, or music.
Campus Village Apartments: One-, two-, and three-bedroom living spaces on the south side of campus near the baseball field and equestrian barn (about a 15-minute walk to the Heart). Each features a furnished living room, kitchen, and in-unit washer and dryer — with convenient street parking nearby.
Whichever living space becomes your corner of home at Earlham, there’s no doubt it’ll allow you to explore even deeper and develop long-lasting connections with other students.

Community is everything to Earlhamites. And that includes Richmond. Richmond, Indiana is at the start of something big. And Earlham students aren't just watching it happen — they're part of it. The Earlham-led Revitalize Richmond initiative is a $100M+ community-powered effort transforming downtown into a hub of living, learning, and opportunity. Nine buildings are being redeveloped, three new downtown destinations are in progress, and the 100-acre Whitewater Gorge is being activated with trailhead improvements, a river boardwalk, and a zipline. Public art, small business coaching, and beautification projects are reshaping the streets around campus; and soon, it’ll all come together with new connections linking Earlham, downtown, and the Cardinal Greenway. It’s a five-year project that started in 2024 — which means if you’re enrolling now, you’ll be here for the most visible, most exciting years of the transformation. When this city starts showing up on Top Places to Live lists, you’ll get to say you were part of that.
We connect students with service opportunities here in Richmond and beyond — social justice movements, public policy, voter education, and other local issues.
