GHOSTS AT QUESTOR’S

RAISE A DRAM FOR BURNS NIGHT

The memory of Captain Alving casts a long shadow in Ghosts, Ibsen’s powerful drama playing at Questors Theatre. Beneath a veneer of respectability lie corruption, secrecy and moral compromise. As Mrs Alving’s carefully guarded truths unravel, the return of her son Oswald exposes painful realities and shatters the family’s perfect image. Once shocking, the play feels searingly relevant in Richard Eyre’s devastating translation. Winner of three Olivier Awards including Best Revival, this acclaimed production runs from 16 to 24 January 2026 with evening performances and selected matinees. A gripping exploration of inheritance, morality and the inescapable weight of the past. www.questors.org.uk

Celebrate Burn's Night in and around Ealing with a trio of lively events honouring Scotland’s greatest poet. The Hound in Chiswick hosts a traditional Burns Night supper with a single 7pm sitting, featuring a refined four course menu, whisky cocktails, live bagpipes and the Address to a Haggis. Over at Sam’s Waterside in Brentford, guests can enjoy a spirited evening with a three course Scottish feast, curated whisky cocktails and live bagpipes across two sittings. In Ealing, The Grange brings the celebrations early with a full Scottish knees-up, complete with live music, a four course supper and fine Scottish malts. Expect tartan, haggis, bagpipes and plenty of cheer across all three venues. www.samswaterside.co.uk www.thehound.london www.grangeealing.co.uk

WHAT HOLISTIC WELLNESS

means for Ealing

ELM | 11

A

s we step into 2026, the conversation around wellness in Ealing is shifting. Gone are the days when "New Year, New You" meant punishing gym regimes and restrictive diets. Instead, our community is embracing a more holistic approach, one that recognises true wellness as the harmonious integration of mind, body and spirit. Holistic wellness isn't a trend; it's a fundamental reimagining of how we care for ourselves. It acknowledges that physical health cannot be separated from mental wellbeing, that nutrition impacts mood, that community connection affects longevity and that our environment shapes our overall vitality. Across Ealing, this philosophy is taking root in exciting ways. Independent wellness studios are moving beyond traditional fitness classes to offer integrated experiences, yoga sessions that incorporate breathwork and meditation, or strength training classes that emphasise mindful movement and mental resilience. Personal trainers are increasingly qualified in nutrition and mental health awareness, understanding that sustainable transformation requires addressing the whole person. The borough's thriving complementary therapy scene reflects this shift too. Acupuncture, osteopathy, reflexology and

massage are no longer viewed as luxuries but as legitimate components of preventative healthcare. Many residents now consider their monthly osteopath appointment as essential as their dental check-up, recognising that maintaining wellness is far more effective than treating illness. Nutrition is being reframed through a holistic lens as well. Rather than diet culture's restrictive messaging, Ealing's nutritionists and health coaches are promoting intuitive eating, gut health and the crucial connection between what we consume and how we feel mentally. Local independent grocers and farm shops are thriving as people seek whole, unprocessed foods that nourish rather than simply fill. Mental health support has rightfully claimed centre stage in holistic wellness conversations. Ealing's counselling services, mindfulness teachers and mental health practitioners are busier than ever, as people finally recognise that prioritising psychological wellbeing isn't weakness, it's wisdom. The stigma is lifting, and seeking support is increasingly normalised. Our parks and green spaces play an underappreciated role in holistic wellness too. Time in nature reduces cortisol, improves mood and provides the restorative environment our nervous systems desperately need in our

overstimulated world. Ealing's abundance of accessible green space is a wellness resource we mustn't take for granted. Community connection, often overlooked in wellness discourse, is vital for holistic health. Loneliness is as damaging to health as smoking fifteen cigarettes daily, yet our culture often celebrates independence over interdependence. Ealing's community groups, from running clubs to art classes, provide the social connection that research shows is fundamental to longevity and life satisfaction. Perhaps most importantly, holistic wellness in 2026 means rejecting the "all or nothing" mentality that sets so many New Year resolutions up for failure. It's about sustainable, incremental changes that honour where you are right now. It's choosing the walk over the drive sometimes, not always. It's eating nourishing food most of the time whilst enjoying life's pleasures guilt-free. It's asking for help when needed and celebrating rest as productive. This January, Ealing's approach to wellness is refreshingly human. It acknowledges that we're complex beings requiring multifaceted care, and that true health flourishes when we tend to all aspects of ourselves with compassion, consistency and community support.

"Holistic wellness is multifaceted, encompassing physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing, not necessarily in a religious sense. These dimensions are interconnected. To me, holistic means nurturing your whole self, not just isolated aspects like physical health." DANI WARCHOLINSKA, REFLEXOLOGIST AT MINOOS SALON, THE AVENUE W13

ADVERTORIAL FEATURE

5 LOCAL EXPERTS SHARE THEIR TOP TIPS HOW TO MAKE 2026 THE BEST YEAR YET Flavia and Hali, Co-founders of Pilates Hub London For 2026, we encourage you to go back to the one form of movement that truly makes you feel good. Start from there and be curious to experiment. After all, as Joseph Pilates said, "change happens through movement, and movement heals."

Alma Ahmovic, Registered Nutritionist specialising in Heart and Metabolic Health For 2026, the biggest improvements in wellbeing don't come from drastic changes, but from small daily habits that support the body consistently over time. Eating regular, balanced meals keeps energy and blood sugar steady. Include protein, fibre and healthy fats at each meal to stay full and satisfied. Prioritise sleep as a daily health habit, not a luxury, and move your body most days in simple, enjoyable ways. Create small routines that reduce stress, like pausing to breathe more slowly with a longer exhale to help your nervous system settle. Choose consistency over intensity, because small habits add up. One misconception I'd like people to leave behind in 2025 is believing health requires extreme diets, willpower or constant motivation. Real progress comes from realistic habits that fit into everyday life. Stop waiting for motivation and ignoring early signs like low energy or poor sleep. Long-term heart and metabolic health is within your control. My advice for starting the new year? Keep it simple and sustainable. Choose one small habit that fits your real life and build from there. Let go of January pressure and perfection, and focus on steady progress that supports your energy, wellbeing and overall health. www.almaahmovic.com ELM | 13

One misconception we'd like people to leave behind in 2025 is that you must start big: a full hour workout, going to the gym five times per week. That's simply not true. We also want to dispel the myth that Pilates is only Reformer or only for women. Pilates is accessible to everyone, in many different forms. Our advice for starting the new year? Tune in with your body, be kind and committed to your own wellbeing, whatever that means for you. Regardless of trends, comparison or judgement, movement should be nourishing and refreshing, not a punishment. Focus on what feels right for you rather than what others are doing. Small, consistent steps that honour your body's needs will create lasting change. When you approach movement with curiosity and self-compassion, you'll naturally find the balance and purpose you're seeking in 2026. www.pilateshub.london

Sid Sidhu, Director and Lead Audiologist at Ealing Hearing Centre For 2026, the one small habit I'd love people to adopt is treating their hearing the same way they treat any other part of their health, with a quick, regular check-in. In our family clinic, I see every day how much better people feel when they're not straining to hear loved ones or missing out on conversations. It's amazing how something as simple as an annual hearing check can lift confidence, reduce stress, and help people stay connected. One misconception I'd like people to leave behind in 2025 is that micro-suction is unsafe. It's actually a safe and effective procedure when performed by a properly trained audiologist or ear care specialist. I always encourage people to check credentials and ensure they're in a clinical environment rather than receiving it as a quick add-on service. Your ears are delicate, and the right expertise makes all the difference. My advice for starting the new year? Prioritise your health, especially your hearing. Hearing is closely linked to balance, mental clarity and connection with others, yet it's often overlooked until problems arise. Taking time to check in on your hearing and address changes early can have a profound impact on your overall wellbeing throughout the year. www.ealinghearing.co.uk

Cath Barnes Holt, Yoga Teacher and Acupuncturist in Ealing For 2026, I believe prioritising sleep will make the greatest impact on overall health. Just as day and night balance each other, the body and mind thrive when activity and rest are balanced. Good quality sleep allows the body and brain to restore, repair and reset. Create good sleep habits, because consistency is key. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, including weekends.

Matthew Hirst, Personal Trainer at BLAST Fit For 2026, I believe consistency will be the foundation of meaningful, long-lasting change. Focus on small, sustainable habits: aim to train twice per week, go to bed a little earlier on several nights, increase your daily water intake, and prepare more nutritious meals at home. When repeated consistently, these manageable steps compound, leading to significant progress over the year. One mistake I'd like people to leave behind in 2025 is chasing short-term fads and quick fixes. If you want 2026 to be a healthier, fitter year, it's time to move away from January-only commitments. True health is an ongoing lifestyle choice. Prioritise long-term behaviours over quick results, stay committed and allow healthy habits the time they need to become part of your everyday life. My advice for starting the new year? Consider working with a qualified fitness professional to help you create a clear, structured plan for 2026. We can support you in setting SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. A SMART plan provides clarity, accountability and a framework you can consistently review to ensure you stay on track throughout the year. www.blastfit.co.uk

One misconception I'd like people to leave behind in 2025 is that you need to be flexible to do yoga. Regular yoga practice will improve flexibility; flexibility is not a prerequisite. Yoga's deeper purpose is to develop mental clarity and self-awareness, leading to equanimity and inner stability. Improved flexibility and other physical benefits are a bonus. A typical yoga class includes a wide range of people with varying levels of fitness and flexibility. My advice for starting the new year? Set small, realistic intentions rather than shortlived resolutions. Slow down long enough to listen to what your body and mind need, and create space for reflection. Focus on how you want to feel rather than what you want to fix. To work towards your chosen intention, adopt one simple action that fits easily into your current routine, something you can repeat consistently, even on busy days. cathbarnesholt.co.uk

NEW YEAR

New Mindset

HABITS, FOCUS AND MENTAL FITNESS

ELM | 15

W

Local Expert Advice

hile gym memberships surge every January, there's a quieter revolution happening - people investing in their mental fitness with the same dedication previously reserved for physical health. In 2026, cultivating a resilient mindset isn't optional; it's essential for navigating our increasingly complex world. Understanding Mental Fitness Just as physical fitness requires consistent exercise, mental fitness demands regular practice. It's not about toxic positivity or pretending difficulties don't exist. Rather, it's developing the psychological strength to handle challenges, maintain focus amidst distractions and bounce back from setbacks. Mental fitness is a skill, and like any skill, it improves with intentional training. The Power of Tiny Habits Massive transformations emerge from tiny, consistent actions. Instead of overhauling your entire life, identify one minuscule habit that aligns with who you want to become. Perhaps it's two minutes of morning meditation, writing three daily gratitudes or taking ten deep breaths before checking emails. The habit's size matters less than its consistency. Once embedded, these micro-habits create identity shifts that naturally lead to bigger changes. Reclaiming Your Focus Our attention has become a battleground. Notifications, endless scrolling and constant connectivity fragment our focus, leaving us mentally exhausted yet unproductive. Start by creating protected focus blocks even just twenty-five minutes where your phone lives in another room. Use apps that limit social media if necessary. Your focus is valuable; guard it fiercely. Building Resilience Resilience isn't about never struggling; it's about how quickly you recover when you do. Reframe setbacks as feedback rather than failure. When something goes wrong, ask "what can I learn?" Practice self-compassion speak to yourself as kindly as you would a struggling friend. Build a toolkit of coping strategies: breathwork, journaling, movement or talking to someone you trust. The Morning Routine Advantage How you begin your day largely determines how it unfolds. Rather than immediately drowning in emails and news, claim the first thirty minutes for yourself. Morning routines aren't about perfection; they're about intentionally setting your mental state before the world makes demands. Consistency Over Intensity Five minutes of daily meditation outperforms monthly hour-long sessions. Small deposits in your mental fitness account compound dramatically over time. You'll miss days. You'll backslide. This is normal, not failure. Mental fitness isn't a destination; it's an ongoing practice requiring patience and self-compassion. This January, invest in the organ that controls everything else: your mind.

F

rom my experience working with clients, the most common misstep I see is that many people find themselves enduring their circumstances, moving through life on autopilot as though in a deep slumber. Endurance may feel like a necessary strategy, but it's actually an adversary of resilience. You know you're enduring when you sense you're holding your breath, waiting for situations to pass and hoping things will revert to how they were. This mindset leads to feeling more reactive and believing you have fewer options. Endurance often means ignoring and pushing down feelings, a behaviour reinforced by societal norms prioritising the appearance of happiness. Ignored feelings don't disappear; they pop up unexpectedly, much like a beach ball pushed down in a swimming pool. Emotional and mental resilience isn't about maintaining constant balance. Rather, it's the capacity to notice when you're drifting too far from where you want to be and gently guide yourself back to a grounded sense of self. I've seen clients transform through small, consistent habits rather than dramatic overhauls. The baby steps you take build up over time. Clients reflect that they never believed they could enjoy life again, yet now find themselves doing so. Some have successfully returned to work after long periods of unemployment, whilst others have improved their relationships with friends and family. If you're feeling overwhelmed by multiple areas you want to improve, start with a single habit. Before you begin, check your foundation: believing that you and your wellbeing are worthwhile. The one habit I consistently recommend is developing a daily mindfulness practice, just ten minutes at the start of each day. Simple activities like box breathing, mindful walking or journalling can all support this practice. Ruth Gibson, Individual and Relationship Therapist This Curious Life, 2 Coningsby Road, W5 4HP

WHY WE LOVE...

EALING’S PARKS WHY OUR BOROUGH'S GREEN SPACES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR WELLBEING AND COMMUNITY

ELM | 17

“Ealing’s parks are one of the area’s greatest assets. Easy access to green space genuinely changes how people live day to day. It supports physical health, mental wellbeing and a calmer pace of life, which is why homes near parks continue to be so desirable. For many buyers, green space is no longer a nice-to-have; it is a non-negotiable part of feeling settled and well at home.” PAUL LESLIE, LESLIE & CO

I

n a borough blessed with over 100 green spaces, Ealing's parks offer far more than just pretty scenery they're vital sanctuaries for mental wellbeing, fitness and community connection. From sunrise joggers to evening dog walkers, these beloved outdoor spaces pulse with life throughout the day, reminding us why getting outside matters now more than ever. Research consistently shows that spending time in nature reduces stress, anxiety, and depression whilst boosting mood and self-esteem. Ealing's residents don't need convincing - our parks are living proof of this, filled daily with people seeking that precious dose of fresh air and green therapy. Northala Fields stands as a testament to creative urban planning, transforming former landfill into spectacular manmade hills offering panoramic views across West London. The climbing mounds are a magnet for families, whilst runners relish the challenging inclines that provide natural interval training. The elegant Walpole Park, with its historic Pitzhanger Manor as a centrepiece, offers formal gardens

perfect for contemplative strolls. Meanwhile, Brent Lodge Park affectionately known as Bunny Park delights children and adults with a maze and animal enclosures, making it an ideal destination for young families seeking outdoor adventure close to home. For those craving wilder, more expansive landscapes, Hanwell Meadows provides peaceful riverside walks along the Grand Union Canal, whilst Pitshanger Park combines sports facilities with tranquil green spaces. The recently restored Gunnersbury Park, with its stunning Palladian mansion and extensive grounds, offers everything from boating lakes to sports pitches. Lammas Park rounds out Ealing's green crown jewels with its accessible facilities and welcoming atmosphere, popular with everyone from picnickers to outdoor fitness enthusiasts. Speaking of fitness, Ealing's parks have become open-air gyms where personal BUNNY PARK MAZE BY ANNE VALLUY

trainers conduct sessions rain or shine. Early mornings see groups performing circuit training, whilst evenings bring bootcamp classes that transform park benches and trees into workout equipment. Several parks now feature dedicated outdoor gym equipment, allowing residents to strength train surrounded by nature rather than artificial lighting and mirrors. The running community thrives here too. From parkrun events to solo dawn expeditions, Ealing's varied terrain caters to all abilities. The psychological benefits of outdoor running - combining cardiovascular exercise with nature exposure and often social connection make it a powerful mental health tool that's freely available to all. What makes Ealing's parks truly special isn't just their individual characteristics, but their collective impact on community wellbeing. They're democratic spaces where everyone regardless of age, fitness level, or financial means - can access the proven mental and physical health benefits of outdoor activity. Whether you're seeking a peaceful moment of solitude, an energising workout, or quality time with loved ones, Ealing's parks deliver. They remind us that sometimes the best medicine doesn't come in a bottle - it comes from stepping outside, breathing deeply, and reconnecting with the natural world that exists right on our doorstep. In our increasingly indoor, screendominated lives, these green spaces aren't luxuries - they're necessities. ELM | 18

MOVEMENT AS Medicine

F

or decades, we've viewed exercise as something we do to lose weight or build muscle. But emerging research reveals a profound truth: movement is medicine, perhaps the most powerful prescription available for both physical and mental health. The Science is Clear Regular movement reduces risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and several cancers by up to 30%. It strengthens bones and maintains independence as we age. But the mental health benefits are equally remarkable. Exercise is as effective as antidepressants for mild to moderate depression, reduces anxiety, improves sleep and protects against cognitive decline. When viewed through this lens, skipping movement isn't about missing a workout - it's about neglecting your healthcare. Redefining Exercise The word "exercise" carries baggage - gyms, lycra and often dread. Movement as medicine looks different. It's a walk through Walpole Park that clears your mind, dancing in your kitchen while cooking, playing with your children, or gardening. All movement counts. The best exercise is simply the one you'll actually do consistently. The Mental Health Connection When you move, your brain releases endorphins, serotonin and dopamine nature's own antidepressants. Regular movement reduces inflammation throughout the body, including the brain, which research increasingly links to depression and anxiety. It improves sleep, which improves everything else. Perhaps most importantly, movement provides a healthy outlet for stress that might otherwise manifest as illness. Finding What Works for You Ealing offers variety for all abilities. Prefer solitude? Our parks provide peaceful routes. Crave community? Join fitness classes, running clubs or outdoor bootcamps. Need low-impact options? Swimming at Acton Leisure Centre or gentle yoga offer movement without joint stress. Hate structured exercise? Simply walk more - to the shops, to visit friends, around the block after dinner. Start Where You Are If you're currently sedentary, don't attempt an hour daily immediately. Start with ten minutes. Then fifteen. Gradually build. Your body needs time to adapt. There's no shame in beginning slowly - there's only wisdom in beginning at all. Make It Non-Negotiable Schedule movement like a doctor's appointment, because that's essentially what it is. Morning movement often works best - it's done before the day derails and positively affects your mood for hours afterward. Listen to Your Body Some days call for vigorous activity. Other days need gentle stretching or a slow walk. Rest is part of the prescription too. Pushing through pain isn't dedication; it's injury waiting to happen. This January, stop viewing movement as punishment. Recognise it as powerful, accessible, free medicine that profoundly impacts every aspect ELM | 20 of your health. Your body was designed to move. Let it.

A PITSHANGER PERIOD GEM TRANSFORMED A THOUGHTFUL RENOVATION THAT BALANCES HERITAGE CHARACTER WITH MODERN FAMILY LIVING

ELM | 23

W

hen searching for a family home closer to loved ones, the owners of this stunning Edwardian property were immediately captivated by its generous bay sash windows and intact original character. What they didn't anticipate was falling equally in love with Pitshanger Lane itself – a vibrant high street with a village atmosphere and welcoming community that has exceeded all expectations. Rather than rushing into renovations, the couple wisely spent a year getting to know their new home before embarking on a thoughtful transformation. The project began with a loft conversion, creating a versatile office, guest room and bathroom. However, the pièce de résistance came with a firstfloor side return extension that revolutionised the ground floor layout. The result is a beautifully broken-plan design that offers flexibility for modern family life. Original Edwardian wooden doors allow the lounge to function as either an open space or an intimate snug, whilst the kitchen – envisioned as a classic shaker design with modern farmhouse touches – preserves every original window and door. The renovation wasn't without challenges. Living through the works with two young children meant improvising with a makeshift kitchen complete with air fryer and travel hob. Additionally, the property's location within the Brentham Conservation Area extended the planning process considerably, requiring close collaboration with the conservation team to navigate complex regulations. Today, the kitchen stands as the owner's proudest achievement – the true heart of the home where the family gathers daily. It's a space that continues to bring joy each morning, a testament to careful planning and respect for period features. The transformation showcases the expertise the owner brings to her business, Lydia Jane Interiors, where she helps others create homes that beautifully balance heritage charm with contemporary family living. HOME GYM

WHY WELLNESS SANCTUARIES ARE REPLACING THE COMMERCIAL AESTHETIC

ELM | 25

T

he sterile commercial gym aesthetic, with its harsh fluorescent lighting and industrial finishes, is officially over. As more of us embrace working out at home, interior designers are reimagining the home gym as something far more sophisticated: a wellness sanctuary that seamlessly integrates with the rest of the house. We spoke to two leading designers about how to create a fitness space that motivates rather than intimidates.

"When it feels like a sanctuary rather than a punishment zone, people are far more likely to use it long-term." TARA RODRIGUES

Light for Body and Mind "Light is absolutely fundamental," says Annabel Ikwueke of Ambient Igloo. She advocates for layered lighting that adapts to different workout styles: energising brightness for high-intensity sessions, softer ambient lighting for yoga and stretching. "If you have natural light, maximise it with mirrors and reflective surfaces," she explains. For windowless spaces, she suggests creative solutions like false skylights or plug-in uplighters to avoid that basement bunker feeling.

“If you don't want the backdrop on your Instagram, you're doing it wrong.” ANNABEL IKWUEKE, AMBIENT IGLOO

Tara Rodrigues takes this further, emphasising the importance of supporting your circadian rhythm. "Neutral-cool lighting around 4000-5000 Kelvin supports focus during training, with dimmable warmer settings for recovery," she notes. Morning light and connections to greenery, she adds, transform working out from chore to pleasure. Atmosphere That Inspires Movement Forget the monochrome, soulless aesthetic. "Who says you can't have French wall beading and a chandelier in your home gym?" Ikwueke asks. She encourages incorporating art, colour, and texture: inspirational gallery walls, decorative panelling, even a plant nook. "If you don't want the backdrop on your Instagram, you're doing it wrong." Rodrigues frames this through a biophilic lens: natural textures, timber details, soft neutral tones, and views of nature instantly elevate the space. "Treat the gym as a wellness room, not a utility space," she advises. "When it feels like a sanctuary rather than a punishment zone, people are far more likely to use it long-term." The Practical Foundations Smart storage is non-negotiable. Ikwueke suggests multifunctional solutions: mirrored cabinets that let you watch your form, novelty hooks for towels. "Clutter kills focus," she warns. Keep essentials like towels and water within reach on beautiful consoles to eliminate excuses for wandering off midworkout. Rodrigues highlights often-overlooked elements: "Poor airflow and echoing rooms can make a gym uncomfortable very quickly." She recommends acoustic panels, natural fabrics, and proper ventilation. Flooring matters too - choose materials that absorb impact and support the body.

Perhaps most importantly, both designers warn against overequipping. Start with the space itself, then introduce equipment gradually based on actual use. Design generous clear zones that allow intuitive movement, even in compact rooms. The key to a successful home gym? Creating a space that pulls you in rather than one you have to push yourself to enter. As Ikwueke puts it: "Make the room feel exciting to be in, and you'll keep yourself there longer. www.ambientigloo.com | www.tararodriguesinteriors.com ELM | 26

NOODLES FOR THE SOUL

ASIAN-STYLE NOODLE BOWL MARIE-CLARE ALPHONSO FROM MARIE-CLARE COOKS After festive indulgence, I crave healthy, fresh food in January. This fragrant noodle bowl with crunchy pak choi and comforting broth hits the spot, like chicken soup with the volume turned up. Swap the meat for sautéed tofu or extra veg if going plant-based. Equipment: Medium saucepan, chopping board Feeds: 2-4 Ingredients: Stock cube (chicken or vegetable) 6 pieces pak choi Large chunk fresh ginger, finely sliced into matchsticks Fresh chillies, finely sliced Spring onions, finely sliced (reserve some larger pieces for infusing) Egg or glass noodles 2 fresh limes, sliced into disks/wedges Handful kaffir lime leaves Handful fresh coriander Soy sauce and sweet chilli sauce to taste Approx 50g chicken or beef per person (or tofu/extra veg for vegan option) Method: The work is mainly in the prep, so get your mise en place ready. Slice the ginger, spring onion, pak choi, limes and chillies. Make broth with stock cube and infuse with ginger, spring onion stems and chillies. Bring to the boil. Add meat and pak choi, simmer until wilted and meat is piping hot. Add noodles and cook for a few minutes. Just before serving, add kaffir lime leaves, soy sauce, sweet chilli and lime slices. how to...

STICK TO A HEALTHIER DIET

E

very January, millions vow to eat healthier, only to abandon their efforts by February. The problem isn't lack of willpower but unrealistic expectations and overly restrictive approaches that set us up for failure.

Start Small, Really Small The biggest mistake is attempting a complete dietary overhaul overnight. Instead, choose one manageable change and master it before adding another. Perhaps it's drinking an extra glass of water daily, adding vegetables to one meal, or swapping your afternoon biscuit for fruit three times weekly. Small wins build confidence and create sustainable habits that compound over time. Don't Label Foods as "Good" or "Bad" Creating moral judgements around food leads to guilt, shame, and the restrictbinge cycle that derails diets. All foods can fit into a healthy lifestyle. Instead of demonising certain foods, focus on adding nutritious options. Ask yourself "what can I add?" rather than "what must I eliminate?" Plan, But Don't Be Rigid Meal planning prevents the 6pm panic that leads to takeaway orders, but perfection isn't the goal. Batch cook when possible, keep your freezer stocked with healthy basics, and accept that some weeks will be chaotic. A ready meal with a side salad beats skipping dinner or ordering fast food out of desperation. Make It Convenient Willpower is finite. If healthy eating requires enormous effort whilst unhealthy options are readily available, you'll struggle. Keep washed, chopped vegetables visible in your fridge. Position fruit prominently. Make the healthy choice the easy choice, and you'll make it more often. Understand Your Triggers We rarely overeat purely from physical hunger. Stress, boredom, loneliness, and exhaustion are common emotional eating triggers. Before reaching for food, pause and ask: "Am I actually hungry, or am I trying to solve a different problem?" Sometimes you need a walk, a chat with a friend, or simply an early night, not another snack. Ditch the All-or-Nothing Mentality One indulgent meal doesn't ruin your progress any more than one salad makes you healthy. What matters is the overall pattern, not individual moments. Ate pizza for dinner? Brilliant, now return to your usual habits at the next meal. No drama, no guilt, no "starting again Monday." Be Patient and Realistic Sustainable dietary change takes months, not weeks. You're rewiring decades of habits and preferences. Progress isn't linear, setbacks are normal, and that's fine. The goal isn't perfection but developing a healthier relationship with food you can maintain for life. This year, forget dramatic transformations. Choose consistency over intensity, and watch how small, sustainable changes create results that actually last.

TO MAKE IT

s we wave goodbye to the festive season, many of us are embracing Dry January – a month-long break from alcohol that's gained serious momentum in recent years. Whether you're looking to reset after the holidays or simply curious about life without booze, taking a month off drinking can bring surprising benefits. The physical perks are impressive: better sleep quality, clearer skin, increased energy levels and often some welcome weight loss. Your liver gets a much-needed rest, and you might notice improved concentration and productivity at work. Many participants report saving a significant amount of money too – those rounds really do add up! But it's not just about what you're giving up. Dry January is the perfect opportunity to explore the exciting world of sophisticated non-alcoholic drinks. Gone are the days when your only option was a boring soft drink. Try this Winter Cobbler (pictured above) from SodaStream – a lively, aromatic mocktail with a gorgeous ginger kick. Simply mix 50ml SodaStream Ginger Ale with 50ml alcohol-free botanical spirit (like Gordon's or Rebels Botanical Dry) and 15ml Botivo. Build it over ice in a tall glass, garnish with an orange wheel and rosemary sprig, and you've got something that looks and tastes spectacular. The ginger ale brings the sparkle and spice, while Botivo adds herbal depth – it's ridiculously drinkable and feels properly grown-up. Head to the Ealing Living Magazine Instagram for two more delicious mocktail recipes to keep your Dry January interesting! Whether you complete the full month or not, Dry January offers a chance to reassess your relationship with alcohol and discover that socialising without drinking can be just as enjoyable. ELM | 30

Local Expert Advice

A

fter the festive season of late nights and disrupted routines, January offers the perfect opportunity to reset, not just mentally, but for our skin too. The biggest skincare mistakes people make at this time of year aren't about neglect, they're about overcorrecting. The New Year doesn't require a complete overhaul or an overcrowded bathroom shelf. Instead, it calls for a calm, simplified approach that supports skin recovery and strengthens the barrier. Serums are particularly effective during this reset phase. As water-based formulations, they absorb more readily into the skin, allowing active ingredients to penetrate efficiently without overloading.

CURATED BEAUTY LONDON Master Switch, £60 Progressive 5% HPR Retinoid Serum is an advanced formula for experienced retinoid users. Featuring double-strength HPR, 4D Hyaluronic Acid, Bakuchiol, and Tranexamic Acid, it delivers powerful skin renewal, smoothing fine lines and boosting radiance with multi-level hydration.

EVOLVE ORGANIC BEAUTY Cleanse & Tone Duo, £48 This cleanse and tone duo combines the Gentle Cleansing Melt to remove makeup and impurities, with Daily Defence Moisture Mist to hydrate and protect. Together, they deliver a nourishing routine for healthy, refreshed, pollution-free skin daily.

For teens and early twenties, less is more. Focus on gentle cleansing, lightweight hydration and daily SPF. For those in their thirties and forties, clinically proven actives can make a real difference when used correctly. Tretinoin, often considered the gold standard in skin renewal, may be introduced under professional guidance. However, keep the rest of your routine simple: gentle cleanser, barrier-supporting moisturiser or serums and daily SPF. For those in their fifties and beyond, consistency becomes more important than intensity. Richer moisturisers and a strong focus on barrier repair help maintain results without irritation. Vitamin C is most effective as a serum, particularly for dullness and uneven tone. Apply two to three mornings per week, always followed by SPF. Retinoids suit those concerned with texture, pigmentation or signs of ageing. Start with a pea-sized amount one to two nights per week on dry skin. The one habit that delivers the biggest results? Consistency with SPF. The best SPF is the one you'll wear every day. Lightweight liquid or mousse formulas make daily use far more achievable.

STARTING THE YEAR WITH INTENTION, NOT INTENSITY

J

anuary doesn't need to be about punishing yourself for December's indulgences. Instead, view this month as an opportunity to gently reset, refresh your routines, and rejuvenate your mind and body after the festive whirlwind. Here's how to approach the new year with intention rather than intensity. Reset Your Sleep Schedule Late nights and disrupted routines are inevitable over the holidays, but quality sleep is the foundation of everything else. Start by establishing a consistent bedtime, even if it's just fifteen minutes earlier than your current pattern. Create a wind-down ritual – perhaps a warm bath, reading, or gentle stretching. Remove screens from the bedroom and notice how quickly your energy, mood, and decision-making improve when you're properly rested. Refresh Your Environment Our surroundings profoundly impact our wellbeing. Begin the year by decluttering one space – perhaps your bedroom, kitchen, or workspace. Don't attempt the entire house; that's overwhelming. Choose one area and make it a sanctuary. Open windows daily for fresh air, add plants if possible, and create spaces that invite calm rather than chaos. A refreshed environment naturally encourages refreshed habits. Rejuvenate Through Movement Exercise needn't mean gruelling gym sessions. Rejuvenating movement is about reconnecting with your body through activities that feel good. A morning walk through Walpole Park, a gentle yoga class, swimming, or even dancing in your kitchen all count. The goal is regular, enjoyable movement that energises rather than exhausts you. Ealing's abundance of green spaces and fitness options means there's something for everyone, regardless of ability or budget. Reset Your Hydration It sounds simple because it is. Most of us are chronically dehydrated, which affects energy, concentration, skin, and digestion. Start each morning with a large glass of water before

coffee or tea. Keep a bottle visible throughout the day. Add lemon or cucumber if plain water bores you. This one change creates surprising ripple effects across your overall wellbeing. Refresh Your Nutrition Gently Rather than extreme diets, simply add more whole foods to your existing routine. An extra portion of vegetables at dinner. Fruit with breakfast. Wholegrains instead of refined options when convenient. Focus on nourishment and how foods make you feel, not restriction and rules. Visit Ealing's farmers' markets for inspiration – fresh, seasonal produce naturally excites healthier eating. Rejuvenate Through Connection Loneliness and isolation damage health as significantly as poor diet or lack of exercise. January's dark evenings can feel isolating, so intentionally maintain social connection. Text a friend, join a local class, volunteer, or simply chat with neighbours. Ealing's community groups offer countless opportunities to connect – from book clubs to running groups to arts organisations. Meaningful relationships rejuvenate us in ways nothing else can. Reset Your Expectations Perhaps most importantly, abandon the "New Year, New You" pressure. You don't need transforming; you need nurturing. Set intentions rather than rigid resolutions. Focus on adding positive habits rather than eliminating enjoyable ones. Celebrate small progress and extend yourself the same compassion you'd offer a good friend. This January, resist the cultural pressure for dramatic reinvention. Instead, gently reset what needs adjusting, refresh what feels stale, and rejuvenate what feels depleted. Sustainable wellbeing isn't built through January intensity – it's cultivated through consistent, compassionate choices that honour where you are right now. Small shifts, maintained over time, create lasting transformation. That's the real reset worth pursuing. ELM | 34
