A NEW YEAR OF SERVING COMMUNITY

As some of you know, Sonny Ellis is a major part of the Eagle Ranch story. As a community leader when our founder, Eddie Staub, came to town in the early 80’s, Sonny reviewed Eddie’s business plan and famously remarked: “Eddie, what you want to do is impossible, but I’m not taking into account what God can do through you and others.”

Over 40 years later, I marvel at the faith and humility Sonny showed to make that statement, and to remain involved in the miracle that Eagle Ranch would become. The choice to trust God to do the impossible is never a one-time decision, but a daily invitation to release the hold that our own limits place on what we think God can do.

Here at the Ranch, we’ve recently pushed into a new area of work requiring great faith and boldness. We became aware of the need for foster homes for large sibling groups. Children in sibling groups of four or more that go into foster care due to losing their parents are usually split up into multiple homes across the state, rarely seeing their siblings. In response, we’ve partnered with WinShape Homes and allocated a home on our campus to serve this need. By God’s grace, the first four children (siblings ages 11, 10, 4, and 4 months) arrived just before Christmas. These kids have become part of our community and family, and we’ll do everything by God’s power to help them reunite with their parents.

I don’t know about you, but I want to be part of a world where my limits don’t define what God can do. I invite you to join us in embracing a vision for what hope and healing can be on God’s terms.

Sincerely,

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR?

Students at Eagle Ranch School open up about what they are looking to achieve either academically or personally this year.

I want to be the best version of myself in school and behavior. I want to stop being influenced by the people around me with bad behavior so I can focus on working on myself and passing school to make my parents proud. And for behavior, I want to avoid consequences so I can spend time with my friends.

ASHER

Something I am working towards is getting back into sports. Sports have always been a big part of my life and recently I had to give it up because of anxiety. Sports were like my therapy. I loved going to practices and having fun with friends. So getting back into sports is a goal I am looking forward to achieving.

DANNI

A goal I have for this year is to grow in my relationship with God. The reason I want to do this is I want to get to know God better and I want to keep my faith in Him strong. I want to show His love through my actions and works. I can do this by going to church more, reading my Bible and devotion, and going to church more.

Honoring Our Roots, Expanding Our Reach

FOSTER CARE AT EAGLE RANCH

FROM ITS EARLIEST DAYS, Eagle Ranch has been dedicated to providing a sanctuary of hope and healing for children seeking love and stability on their journey. That heart has never changed.

Guided by a commitment to follow God’s leading—listening to His voice, noticing where the need is greatest, and responding with faith—we continue to step into the spaces where children and families need hope. Today, that same calling has led us to a bold new expansion of our mission: Foster Care at Eagle Ranch.

In partnership with WinShape Homes, we are addressing a heartbreaking reality in our community: many sibling groups are separated upon entering the foster care system simply because few homes have the space or resources to keep them together. We felt a heavy burden to be part of the solution, creating a specialized program designed to ensure brothers and sisters stay together.

By utilizing our on-campus housing, these children can experience the peace-filled environment of the Ranch while living with licensed foster parents. In December 2025, we officially opened the Peace Home, with John and Cassie Adams serving as the first foster parents. They have already welcomed the first set of siblings—four precious children—providing them with stability and community support as we pray and labor to someday reunite them with their parents.

HELP US GROW THIS VISION

Many sibling groups are separated upon entering the foster care system simply because few homes have the space or resources to keep them together.

As we celebrate our 40th Anniversary, expanding into Foster Care is one of our most critical goals. We are raising funds through our 40th Campaign to sustain this program for years to come.

PRAY for the four foster children in the Peace Home and the Adams family.

GIVE to ensure the Adams have the support they need to care for these children.

Former Eagle Ranch houseparents, John and Cassie Adams, now serve as foster parents in Eagle Ranch's Peace Home for children in our Foster Care Program.

HONORING OUR HISTORY

In 2025, Eagle Ranch celebrated 40 years of serving children and families. To honor our history, we are sharing the stories of those who helped the dream of Eagle Ranch become a reality.

HONORING THE LEGACY OF

SONNY ELLIS REFLECTIONS

In the mid 1980s, CNN ran a story on Eagle Ranch calling our mission the "Miracle on Chestnut Mountain." It’s always been my desire that the Ranch be a beacon of hope, not only for the children who are served here, but for all those whose lives are somehow touched by this ministry.

Whether it be board members, volunteers, supporters, or advisors, I believe that this “miracle” creates a sense of expectancy that God is always wanting to do something new.

Sonny Ellis experienced that along with us all those many years ago. The following is where his story and Eagle Ranch's intersected.

Sonny Ellis served as Senior Vice President and Treasurer of Genuine Parts for fifteen years. He was one of the most astute and respected business leaders in both the corporate and foundation communities in Atlanta during that time.

Arriving in Gainesville in late 1982, I began to “try” to raise money for my Eagle Ranch dream throughout northeast Georgia and metro Atlanta. I was a bit of an enigma in those days, and that's where Sonny Ellis entered the picture.

Loyd Strickland, an early Eagle Ranch advisor, asked his good friend, Sonny, if he would check me out to make sure that my vision for Eagle Ranch was legitimate.

A meeting was set up for me to meet Mr. Ellis on May 9, 1983, at 4:30 pm in Atlanta. Prior to the meeting, he asked me to bring my business plan for Eagle Ranch. The only problem was that I wasn't sure what a business plan was! Subsequently, I put together a one-pager that described my vision for Eagle Ranch and an operational and capital forecast.

After Mr. Ellis reviewed my "business plan," he slowly pushed my one sheet across the desk back toward me, took off his glasses, and said as gently as possible the most encouraging words spoken to me since my arrival in Georgia in the early 80s. He said simply, "Eddie, what you want to do is impossible, but I'm not taking into account what God can do through you and others."

That simple statement was so impactful to me because my greatest desire was to do something that could only be accomplished through God's power. So that when people looked at Eagle Ranch, they wouldn't look at me or our Board of Directors but instead see God at work. Mr. Ellis confirmed what I knew; that this endeavor would fail apart from God's intervention.

"EDDIE, WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IS IMPOSSIBLE, BUT I'M NOT TAKING INTO ACCOUNT WHAT GOD CAN DO THROUGH YOU AND OTHERS."

Perhaps Sonny Ellis’ most significant contribution to Eagle Ranch was the encouragement to start an endowment fund to help offset operational costs for the Ranch. Today our endowment provides a significant source of income, and quite frankly, there are a number of our programs that would not exist today if we hadn't begun to develop that endowment fund back in those early days.

Until his passing at age 97, I would visit Mr. Ellis periodically at his Atlanta retirement community. He would greet me the same way he did that first time we met, but now we both can look back forty years later and marvel at what God brought into being.

INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION, PERSONALIZED SUPPORT

In the Elementary Program at Eagle Ranch School, students are discovering hope, confidence, and academic success. With many children coming in several grade levels behind, the program provides small class sizes, tailored instruction, and a deeply supportive environment that nurtures the whole child.

“Our mission is to provide families with an opportunity to heal while at the same time their child is succeeding academically,” says Julie Price, Elementary Teacher. She has seen firsthand how early intervention changes lives.

“I have lost count how many times students have looked at me beaming over a good grade—they tackled what they thought was an impossible task and conquered it!”

Through collaboration among teachers, counselors, and families, students find renewed motivation and growth. “Lives are being changed, not just academically, but emotionally and spiritually too,” Price shares.

At Eagle Ranch School, early support helps students build a strong academic foundation and a renewed sense of confidence.

THIRTY YEARS OF CHANGED LIVES

HONORING MICHAEL JOHNSON

Eagle Ranch staff, past clients, and friends recently gathered to celebrate the retirement of Michael Johnson, a beloved counselor who faithfully served children and their families at Eagle Ranch for over thirty years.

When John Shackelford became the new Executive Director at Eagle Ranch, one of his first conversations was with Michael Johnson—a counselor nearing retirement after nearly 30 years of service. Though saddened by the news of Michael’s plan to retire, John accepted Michael’s decision, grateful for the legacy he had already built.

Less than a year later, as new initiatives were taking shape at the Ranch, John proposed a new training role to Michael. Fully expecting him to decline and step into retirement, John was stunned by Michael’s response. With joyful surprise, Michael exclaimed, “I feel like I won the lottery with this new opportunity!”

Believing deeply in the direction Eagle Ranch was heading, Michael chose to stay—and went on to serve faithfully for another 2.5 years.

Michael has been a steady force of wisdom and goodness on our counseling team, known for his compassion, presence, and Christ-centered care.

In every session, he made room for a third presence: Jesus, the True Healer. His legacy lives on not only in changed lives, but in the counselors he trained and the faith he lived out daily.

Enjoy your next season, Michael – you will be missed! Congratulations on a faithful, dedicated, and deeply meaningful career.
