CELEBRATING TRANSFORMATION

Breakthrough. We’re all looking for it in our lives and the lives of others. From surface level desires to deeper places of the soul, we all long for it. The world tells us how to find it: self-confidence, self-assertion, self-help.

This summer, I’ve experienced and witnessed up close how the lies of our culture contribute toward the temptation we all feel to protect ourselves through selfcenteredness. As I’ve reflected on this pain

and the cause of it, I’m struck again by the revolutionary words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount:

“Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled" (Matthew 5:3-6 NIV).

Jesus makes it abundantly clear that the only way to find ourselves, to break through the gravity of sin, is to lose ourselves in Him to break open and admit we cannot attain the breakthroughs we so desperately need.

Here, you’ll read some incredible stories of transformation. It is a joy and honor to walk alongside staff and families who are willing to embrace the posture of Jesus in order to receive the gifts He offers.

Thank you for partnering with us in this meaningful work. I pray that you, too, may experience the breakthroughs that only Jesus can provide.

Appreciatively,

FALL IS AN EXCITING TIME AT EAGLE RANCH SCHOOL, AS STUDENTS RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM AND NEW EDUCATIONAL ADVENTURES BEGIN. LEARN ABOUT OUR SCHOOL AND DAY SCHOOL PROGRAM AT EAGLERANCHSCHOOL.ORG.

A CALL TO GREATER FAITH

From serving as the Director of Education at Eagle Ranch School to a joint call to serve as Respite Houseparents for the Faith Home, Fred Haselden and his wife, Janie, experienced firsthand how the Lord provides.

Dr. Fred Haselden loves his job. He knew he was in a place where God had called him, serving in a position for which he was wellequipped, and working toward a mission he felt passionate about.

One typical day at the Ranch, Fred was in conversation about a staff transition that would result in a few boys being displaced from the Residential Program into the Day School Program. Fred left the meeting conflicted, struggling with how these boys—and their families—could best be helped.

Fred started praying, “God, somebody’s got to fix this!” Fred stopped dead in his tracks as he heard the Holy Spirit clearly say, “You need to fix this.” Fred almost laughed as he responded, “Are you kidding me? I already have a full-time job that I’m not going to quit – you called me to that position – are you saying you’re calling me to this position, too? God, if you want us to do this, we will, but you’re going to have to talk to my wife because I’m not going to tell her!”

Little did Fred know, God was already working on his wife, Janie. For the past few years, Janie had been praying fervently for increased faith. She had also recently been reflecting on a piece of Scripture that said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few” (Matt. 9:37). She knew that increased faith had to be met with action.

As Fred shared the story with Janie about the boys being displaced due to staff transitions, Janie looked at Fred and said, “That’s not what’s best for those boys, is it? Fred, do you think we can do this?” Following this encounter, a miraculous series of events led Fred and Janie to become Respite Houseparents for the Faith Home at Eagle Ranch, with no coincidence in the name of the house they were assigned to.

Fred and Janie Haselden, their son and daughter, the Faith Home Program Assistant, and the boys living in their home.

Reflecting back on this season, Fred smiled. “God's hand was in this every step of the way,” he said. “Not only did God go before me to prepare Janie's heart, but also the hearts of everyone that would be involved. Even more, God sustained me every step of the way. People would say, ‘You don't even look tired!’

“GOD'S HAND WAS IN THIS EVERY STEP OF THE WAY."

I can’t explain how I wasn’t exhausted because both jobs are demanding and tiring— both emotionally and physically—but the only thing I can say is that God wanted us in this position for this season, and he sustained me in both of those roles.”

Janie felt similar, knowing God had positioned her for a season like this. “I was familiar with providing a safe, nurturing home and preparing meals every day. Now, I was just preparing them for almost ten people! God taught me a great deal about hospitality during this season, showing me how to avoid feeling stressed in the preparations and, instead, step into the stories of the people around me."

Fred and Janie loved and supported these boys and their families for nearly a year until a more permanent set of houseparents came on staff. God had called them both to take a leap of faith, which they did. Through this, the Haseldens experienced how the Lord always provides and sustains in the seasons where He calls His children to more.

FROM BROKEN TO BREAKING FREE

MARC'S STORY

TANIA TRIED EVERYTHING TO GET HELP FOR HER SON, JEAN MARC. IT WASN'T UNTIL THEIR TIME AT EAGLE RANCH THAT THEY EXPERIENCED OVERWHELMING LIFE CHANGE.

I was broken. I was so broken. I didn't know it at the time.

Jean Marc and I had been in counseling—we'd been in counseling for a long time, and I didn't have anywhere else to turn to. I tried everything. I didn't realize it at the time, but not only was I entrusting Eagle Ranch with my son's care, I was entrusting Eagle Ranch with my care, too. I needed something that I could put my faith in. I needed a whole system to fundamentally put my faith in.

REAL TRANSFORMATION IS UGLY. BUT IT'S EXACTLY THAT WHICH HAS CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

Real transformation is ugly. It's the stuff we want to hide. It's the stuff that we stick down and tuck neatly in the “let's not talk about this because it'll ruffle too many feathers” category, but it's exactly that which has changed my life forever.

Eagle Ranch was my first conscious adult experience of doing the right thing in the right environment, and for me. I was now in an emotionally safe environment, where my well-being was safe. It was a game-changer for me.

Now, Jean Marc is 6 feet tall, he's 15, he's running track in high school with a 3.6 grade point average, but more than that, if you told any of his teachers that he was that same little kid as before, they would look at you like something is wrong with you.

I could give you real, messy stories like this about my job, about my family, about my friends, especially about Jean Marc. I got in a mess. It wasn't always a happy ending, but it was always powerful, and I couldn't have done it without Eagle Ranch.

HONORING OUR HISTORY

As we celebrate 40 years of serving children and families, we honor our history through the stories of those who helped the dream of Eagle Ranch become a reality. Jim Webb set the standard for exceptional Board governance and was instrumental in initiatives promoting excellence and vision. The expansion of the Ranch’s mission through The James W. Webb Wings Center, located on the Eagle Ranch campus, was a fulfillment of Jim’s desire to impact (even) more lives.

"THE THING I RESPECT MOST ABOUT JIM IS NOT HIS BUSINESS CAREER OR THE NUMBER OF FOLKS WITH WHOM HE HAD GREAT INFLUENCE, BUT RATHER HIS COURAGE IN HIS OWN PERSONAL JOURNEY."

In the following tribute, Eddie Staub honors the life and legacy of Jim Webb. Eddie is the Founder of Eagle Ranch, where Jim served as a treasured counsel, friend, and board member for 36 years.

Jim Webb, pictured with his wife, June.

THERE'S A SAYING that a person's life is their greatest sermon. That gives me great solace because any words I might speak, any examples I might give, would seem inadequate to describe Jim’s life, a life well lived.

I met Jim Webb in 1983. I remember three things about that meeting. First, his piercing blue eyes behind those black framed glasses. Second, his probing questions many of which I couldn't answer. And finally, when I was leaving his office thinking, "Well, that didn't go too well."

I think I was a bit of an enigma for Jim full of faith but slightly lacking in business acumen. So we agreed to get together after I had done some of what he called "homework." We got together a month later, and I began to feel that I had gone from being an enigma to someone he wanted to invest in.

That was 36 years ago. I think many times, longevity is underrated. That when things get tough, most people just tap out. Jim never did that. He was committed for the long haul.

I've had some incredible confidantes and mentors over the years, but none of them have walked this journey with me longer than Jim Webb. Our relationship evolved from me being in awe of his knowledge and experience as a businessman to, in later years, having spirited discussions about strategic direction, which always ended in a hug afterward.

As Jim would say toward the end of his life, "Iron sharpened iron for the good of Eagle Ranch and God's Kingdom."

Speaking of hugs as I came from a family that rarely showed emotion, Jim introduced me to the "hugging Webbs" shortly after we first met. I remember my first visit to their home six of their children lined up and, in turn, hugged me. I cannot begin to tell you how awkward that felt. But I remember looking out of the corner of my eye and seeing Jim over in the corner just laughing. I think he knew that I was on another journey besides Eagle Ranch to be a more vulnerable man. He and his family were part of that journey.

Jim was the most "we" person I've ever known. I remember going through challenging times, and it would never be, "Eddie, you need to do this and that." It was, "We need to do this." I've never met a person who had such a predisposition to join people to go from a "them" or "they" to a "we" and "us."

But the "we" he was most proud of was his family. He was a fiercely proud and loyal husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

The thing I respect most about Jim is not his business career or the number of folks on whom he had great influence, but rather his courage in his own personal journey.

I think he considered one of his greatest accomplishments to be working through the difficulties of his childhood that affected him on what he felt were many different levels. Seeking help through counseling, I believe, was the most courageous thing he ever did. And, I believe, as it pertained to Eagle Ranch this was an integrity issue with him. If we are part of a mission that challenges children to have the courage to work through their issues, how can we ask less of ourselves? It was this high level of integrity that I'll always remember Jim for.

Jim would tell me on more than one occasion, "Eddie, I could have been an Eagle Ranch child." I don't know if that consciously drove his early involvement, but it certainly fueled his passion in his later years as he became fully aware that "it's only by the grace of God."

With Jim, you never felt you were alone in your journey. Several days after his passing, I was in the car about 6:30 in the morning, which is usually the time I would call Jim. I began to punch in his number one that will forever be etched in my mind.

Jim served as best man in my wedding, standing in for my father who had died 15 years earlier. He has been a confidante, mentor, friend, cheerleader, and challenger, but above all, a brother in Christ.

I am forever a better man, father, husband, and leader because of Jim Webb.
