THE ORIGIN OF A DIAMOND The word “diamond” comes from the Greek word: “Adamas”, meaning “invincible”. It is the hardest natural material on Earth and the most precious substance found in nature. Formed deep within the crust of the Earth and kilometres below the surface, diamonds come about under extreme pressure and high temperatures. These remarkable gems, formed between 990 million and 4.25 billion years ago, are brought to the surface by volcanic eruptions and discovered in some of the oldest parts of the world. As old as life on our planet, diamonds are extraordinary natural wonders, making them even more precious to cherish. The transformation from pure carbon into these rare treasures determines the eventual shape of the diamond, meaning the stone itself dictates its final shape. Formed by nature’s immense forces, no two rough diamonds are alike — making each unique. It takes years of experience and a keen eye to select the stones worthy of becoming a GASSAN 121.

Before the diamond is cut, it is divided into smaller pieces through sawing, cleaving, or laser cutting. This lays the foundation for the eventual shape of the diamond.
The diamond is pre-cut and shaped into an eight-sided base to accommodate the 121 facets, a significant difference from the standard brilliant-cut diamond, which only has 57 facets.

Defined a hundred years ago by a precise mathematical formula, the classic 57-facet round cut quickly became the preferred choice among diamonds. But what if there was a way to enhance its brilliance even further? GASSAN envisioned more than just an ordinary brilliant cut. Inspired by the passion and expertise of Steve Bierman, the dream of creating an even more radiant diamond cut became a reality. After years of research, Bierman and his team developed a groundbreaking concept. The innovation, introduced in 2005, set a new standard for brilliance with the GASSAN 121, a diamond featuring 121 facets.

All four characteristics, the 4 C’s, are essential in determining the value of a diamond. However, at GASSAN, the Cut is the most critical element in elevating a diamond to extraordinary levels, such as the GASSAN 121. GASSAN reinforces this commitment with a fifth C: Confidence. The weight of a diamond is measured in carats (ct), with one carat being equivalent to 0.2 grams or 100 points. For instance, a diamond weighing 0.01 ct is the same as 1 point, while a “fiftypointer” refers to half a carat (0.50 ct). Diamonds are among the most valuable commodities in the world by weight, so
they are weighed to a hundredth or even a thousandth of a carat. This precision demonstrates the importance of preserving as much of the weight of the diamond as possible during the cutting process, all while balancing other crucial factors such as colour and clarity.

Diamonds come in every colour of the rainbow. Whether blue, pink, or yellow, the rule for coloured diamonds is simple: the more intense the colour, the rarer and more valuable the diamond. For colourless or “white” diamonds, colour is graded on a scale from D to Z. This scale ranges from
J D, which represents the most colourless and rarest diamonds, to Z, which indicates diamonds with increasingly noticeable yellow and brown tints, which are more common. GASSAN works exclusively with natural, untreated diamonds, ensuring their authenticity and quality.

During the formation of a diamond, other elements are often trapped within or on the surface of the rough diamond. These imperfections are known as inclusions. These can range from tiny, barely visible specks to larger, more noticeable marks. Similar to spots on a
mirror, inclusions disrupt the optimal reflection of light, decreasing the brilliance of a diamond. The more visible these imperfections are, the lower the value of the diamond. Minimizing the impact of such inclusions is a critical part of the cutting process.

Among all the characteristics, the way it is cut defines a diamond’s ultimate allure. The “cut” encompasses the shape, proportions, and symmetry of a polished diamond. Creating fire, life, and brilliance requires extreme precision. Each of the 121 facets must be polished at an exact angle to ensure that the GASSAN 121 perfectly captures and
reflects light. The brilliance of a diamond relies on the precise proportions between its top (“crown”), base (“pavilion”), and middle (“girdle”). If the base is too deep or too shallow, deviating from the ideal proportions, light cannot travel properly through the diamond, resulting in a less dazzling stone.

TRADITION GASSAN, a family-owned business founded by Samuel Gassan in 1945, emerged in the heart of Amsterdam’s diamond district shortly after World War II.
