letters from Never would I have thought that I’d be where I am today.

When I first joined Diverse World Fashion Magazine, I was terrified to go to my first shoot. I remember standing there, paralyzed with nerves, surrounded by so many talented and creative people. But once we started shooting, I was reminded why I fell in love with photography in the first place. I still remember exactly how I felt after that shoot—so incredibly happy I showed up and gave myself the chance. From that moment forward, I was given endless opportunities. I could join any team I wanted. Create anything I imagined. DWF reminded me of the passions that have always lived in my heart. I found my love for photography and videography, for styling and runway production, for editing and design, I found my love for art and creation. I discovered not only my passions—but myself. I was given a space to learn, to create, and to fully embrace who I am, and I will never take that for granted.

Being Editor-in-Chief of this magazine has been the most rewarding experience of my time at Florida State. After two runway productions, fifteen shoots, and countless allnighters filled with editing, I could not be more proud of Issue 30. Issue 30 is about finding your muse— your art, what makes you feel alive, and what ignites your creativity. It’s about passion, about doing things for love. It’s about the boundless nature of creativity when it’s fueled by heart, embracing unique talents, accepting differences, and finding beauty in what makes us distinct. To the future members of DWF: this magazine is a publication rooted in celebrating differences and fostering a welcoming creative community. It is a place where your voice, your vision, and your talents will always be seen and valued. It is overflowing with opportunity, so long as you’re brave enough to say yes. I am endlessly grateful for the experiences that led me to this moment and I am so so so thankful I gave this opportunity a chance. the editors

Wow. I am very proud to say that I have been a part of Diverse World Fashion magazine for four semesters.

I had a rocky start to my college experience, and like many people entering this phase of their life, I had no idea what I wanted or who I was. I understood bits and pieces of my personality, but could not grasp how I wanted to lead my life. And that scared me. After a challenging and tiring freshman year, I entered sophomore year with fresh eyes. I was ready for a change. My best friend asked if I wanted to attend an interest meeting for a magazine on campus. Little did I know, this magazine would become an essential part of my college experience and how I see myself as a human being. Throughout my DWF career, I have been surrounded by people who told me I could do it. DWF fosters a kind of acceptance and encouragement you just don’t see everywhere. Because of this, I was able to work with some of the most inspiring and creative people on campus. Up until DWF, I hadn’t created something I was consistently proud of in years. DWF gave me a purpose and a newfound sense of self, and for that, I owe it every compliment.

I have witnessed some amazing things come out of this organization, and in every faction of DWF, I find admirable and impressive work. It is crazy that one campus magazine can garner so much talent. Creativity, as a concept, has changed and expanded since I’ve been in DWF. The barriers we break and the chances we take have shown me a whole new level of expression.

My time with you all has been so abundant. This role has not always been easy, and I have faced challenges beyond what I thought I would in my college years. But what a privilege it is! And what a lesson being your Editor-In-Chief has taught me. I am honored to serve in this role and carry a piece of DWF with me wherever I go. This magazine is dynamic and ever-changing, and I cannot wait to see where it goes from here. I hope every one of you knows that you play an essential role in this publication. Dancing With a Dream By Emily Harris We met out on the terrace As the sun began to fade, Wishing time would spare us Every moment we’d delayed. Out Where the Cicadas Sing Emily Harris There is a place I’ve never been That lets my thoughts melt away When my patience has run thin, And my world turns to grey. An old dock looks over a lake Lit by the Moon’s gentle gaze While fireflies begin to wake, Setting the air ablaze. A distant melody starts to ring Harmony floating through the trees Out where the cicadas sing, Their song carried by the breeze. canvas to couture Lucy Steigenga Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. Monet's Water Lilies. When evocative art comes to mind, these paintings and the talented makers behind them come to the forefront. These artworks live virtually in many aspects of modern life, from simple t-shirt designs to tote bags, tattoos, and tapestries. You don’t have to be an art critic to recognize Starry Nights on a postcard. However, despite the immense circulation of their artwork in modern times, many of these artists were not entirely, or even at all, recognized for their talents during their lifetimes. It is a common phenomenon for creative work to be dismissed at the time of its release and only later appreciated the way it should have always been. Common examples include movies and music, such as Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, which initially met with mixed reviews, and the celebrated Blade Runner, which was poorly received at the time of its release. This occurrence is also significant in the art world. Creations that were considered worthless during Van Gogh's life are now immortalized through designs in Yves Saint Laurent’s runways, not to mention museums all over the world. Vincent Van Gogh, known for turning to art as an escape from reality, produced about 2,100 paintings in his lifetime, often sourced from landscapes and nature in his small Dutch village.1 He dreamt of having his own artists' community at his Yellow House in Arles, but sadly found little success in his lifetime as an artist.2 Yet today, his masterpieces are considered some of history’s most valuable art. Modern designers also saw potential in his pieces, with Mason Margiela’s 2014 Haute Couture dress depicting Van Gogh’s Irises in a stunning display of the marriage between high fashion and powerful art.3 One of the most recognized Van Gogh references was in Yves Saint Laurent's 1988 Spring/Summer collection, where he took inspiration from Van Gogh's “Vase with Twelve Sunflowers.”4 While Claude Monet did receive recognition during his later life, his fame and popularity truly soared in the 20th century,5 and today his impressionist brushstrokes inspire Dolce and Gabbana and Chanel. These designers have drawn from Monet's intense colors and delicate details to create designs such as Christian Dior's 1949 Haute Couture dress, which paid tribute to Monet’s The Path through the Irises. The dress was entirely embroidered with vibrant pink and violet flowers, capturing the essence of Monet’s iconic work.6 This connection between Monet’s timeless perspective of nature and high fashion highlights the impact of impressionism, showing how easy it is to close the gap between art and fashion. This motif extends beyond just these two iconic names. The art world often overlooked Frida Kahlo’s vibrant colors and emphasis on fashion in her paintings during her lifetime. Today, her unique style shines in designs like Maya Hansen's Spring 2013 Collection, titled Skully Tulum, inspired by Kahlo and Dia de los Muertos.7 Kahlo’s bold use of symbolism and her Mexican heritage in her art supply inspiration to designers. Kahlo’s influence doesn't live only in the fashion world. Her unique style inspires jewelry, tattoos, and even fashion statements in modern-day streetwear. Her powerful self-portraits and approach to identity and femininity have become staples in contemporary culture. Certain artists continue to be muses for designers. As time passes, art can be interpreted, manifested, and appreciated in the fashion world, giving these artists the recognition they always deserved. The stories of these artists and many others share a similar pattern: During their lifetimes, their work was initially met with skepticism and, in many cases, rejection, but as time went on, they began to gain recognition and eventually even transcend the boundaries of the art world into fashion. Creations that were once dismissed as "irrelevant" or "too radical" have become a central source of influence for fashion, reshaping how we view beauty, creativity, and cultural value. Through the recognition of these artists and their impact on a realm outside of painting, we can see that in modern times, the art of the past doesn’t just stay confined to museums and galleries. It has become alive and reinterpreted by the hands of designers who create pieces that immortalize artists before them. What was once undervalued, or not even valued at all, has become priceless in both artistic and daily commercial life, proving that sometimes, true recognition comes only after time has passed and the world has had a chance to fully understand the scope of an artist’s vision. The woman I saw staring back at me In the gold-plated mirror at seventeen, Room lit aflame with candlelight, Shadows stretching, swaying, Soft drums and sultry guitar Drifting through the air.
