Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Offers Unique Opportunities for Breeders and Youth (MARYSVILLE, Ohio) —The Best of the Buckeye Program, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) in conjunction with the Ohio Beef Expo and the Ohio State Fair, is gearing up for its second season. The program provides Ohio seedstock breeders an additional marketing opportunity, creates a source for moderately priced show steers and heifers by providing a program with awards and prestige, and attracts new participants interested in showing at the Ohio Beef Expo and/or the Ohio State Fair. Breeders are encouraged to request a Best of the Buckeye logo for use in printed and digital promotion of Best of the Buckeye eligible cattle. Email beef@ohiobeef.org to request the logo. The Best of the Buckeye program will offer twenty $500 scholarship opportunities for Best of the Buckeye participants to offset the cost of purchasing, raising and exhibiting a Best of the Buckeye nominated calf. Scholarships will be awarded to less-experienced participants, ages 8-21, with consideration given to the applicant’s financial need. Scholarship applications can be found at www. ohiocattle.org/best-of-the-buckeye and will be due on January 15, 2015. Scholarship recipients will be notified in February 2015. Academic scholarships will be offered to youth pursuing a post-high school degree. Scholarships will be based on academics and extracurricular activities. Eligible Best of the Buckeye participants are high school juniors through 21 years of age as of January 1, 2015. Academic scholarships will be awarded to participants pursuing an Ag related degree and may be awarded to applicants who are entering a non-Ag related field of study (based on the number of applications). All scholarship applicants will also be required to submit an essay along with their scholarship application. The scholarship essay topic will be predetermined and posted on the OCA website. The scholarship deadline will be June 15,
www.ohioangus.org
2015 and scholarships will be presented at the Ohio State Fair. The Best of the Buckeye program will recognize top-placing Ohio bred, born and registered calves, along with the breeder and exhibitor, in each breed division at the two shows. Thanks to generous sponsors, $45,000 will be given through premiums at each show, scholarships and awards. This year’s sponsors are Green Oak Farms, heifer division; Steve R. Rauch, steer division; and Franklin Equipment, scholarship. For cattle to be eligible for the Best of the Buckeye program, they must be registered and bred by an Ohio cattleman and born in state. ET Calves and calves out of purchased bred cows are eligible if they were born in Ohio and list an Ohio cattleman as the breeder. Breeders and exhibitors must be OCA members and in good standing with OCA to be eligible. Exhibitors must be Ohio residents and meet the age requirements for the Ohio Beef Expo and Ohio State Fair junior shows. To participate in Best of the Buckeye, breeders must complete a nomination form (each form can be used to nominate up to five animals from the same breeder) and sign an affidavit verifying Best of the Buckeye eligibility. The breeder or exhibitor may submit the nomination forms and fee for the Best of the Buckeye nominations. Cattle that are nominated prior to the Ohio Beef Expo by March 1, 2015 and prior to the Ohio State Fair by June 20, 2015 will incur a $25 per head nomination fee per show. Cattle may be nominated for both shows by March 1, 2015 for a rate of $40. Breeders will have the opportunity to nominate cattle through check-in at the Ohio Beef Expo and at the Ohio State Fair at an increased late nomination fee of $75 per head. Best of the Buckeye exhibitor rules, last year’s show results and additional nomination details are available at www.ohiocattle.org/best-of-the-buckeye or by contacting the OCA office. For more information, contact the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association at 614-8736736, email beef@ohiobeef.org.

Industry News & Notes ‘Building an Angus Legacy’ Phase II Begins Oct. 1 Angus breeders have a second chance to become a part of Angus history The new entryway at the American Angus Association headquarters in St. Joseph, Mo., represents the breed’s rich history, and the families and individuals who have dedicated their lives to caring for Angus cattle. Behind every granite planter and paver, there’s a story. The Angus Foundation thanks those who contributed to the “Building an Angus Legacy” project during its initial phase, and now, their Angus heritage is permanently etched in stone at the Association. The remaining ground and wall pavers are now available for purchase, and will be granted on a first-come first-served basis. Reserve your personalized granite paver by ordering online at www.angusfoundation.org. “We have opened up Phase II to provide everyone ample opportunity to become a part of the newly renovated walkway,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “The new walkway is beautiful, unique and now an important part of Angus history.” A limited number of pavers are available for purchase, so Angus breeders are encouraged to act now. Each paver will be engraved on site with names, farm/ranch names, dates, in-memory, etc.; text that fits within the line and character limits for each granite paver. No brands or logos are allowed. Pavers can be purchased either online, or by credit card or check when received at the office and paid in full with receipt of payment. A ribbon cutting will take place at 1 p.m. on Nov. 3 in celebration of the “Building an Angus Legacy” project before tours of the American Angus Association begin, prior to the 2014 Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show. A donation to the Angus Foundation’s brick naming drive is an unrestricted tax-deductible gift to support the many youth, education and research projects the Angus Foundation funds. The Angus Foundation reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of all brick engraving orders. For more information or to order by telephone, please contact the Angus Foundation at 816-3835100.

Industry News & Notes USDA Expands Access to Credit to Help More Beginning and Family Farmers Changes Increase Eligibility and Financing Options for Hard Working Families
WASHINGTON, Oct. 7, 2014 – Agriculture Deputy Secretary Krysta Harden today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will improve farm loans by expanding eligibility and increasing lending limits to help more beginning and family farmers. As part of this effort, USDA is raising the borrowing limit for the microloan program from $35,000 to $50,000; simplifying the lending processes; updating required “farming experience” to include other valuable experiences; and expanding eligible business entities to reflect changes in the way family farms are owned and operated. The changes become effective Nov. 7. “USDA is continuing its commitment to new and existing family farmers and ranchers by expanding access to credit,” said Harden. “These new flexibilities, created by the 2014 Farm Bill, will help more people who are considering farming and ranching, or who want to strengthen their existing family operation.” The microloan changes announced today will allow beginning, small and mid-sized farmers to access an additional $15,000 in loans using a simplified application process with up to seven years to repay. These efforts are part of USDA’s continued commitment to small and midsized farming operations, and new and beginning farmers. In addition to farm related experience, other types of skills may be considered to meet the direct farming experience required for farm loan eligibility such as operation or management of a non-farm business, leadership positions while serving in the military, or advanced education in an agricultural field. Also, individuals who own farmland under a different legal entity operating the farm now may be eligible for loans administered by USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA). Producers will have an opportunity to share suggestions on the microloan process, and the definitions of farming experience and business structures through Dec. 8, 2014, the public open comment period. FSA is also publishing a Federal Register notice to solicit ideas from the public for pilot projects to help increase the efficiency and effectiveness of
farm loan programs. Comments and ideas regarding potential pilot projects will be accepted through Nov. 7, 2014. Since 2010, USDA has made a record amount of farm loans through FSA — more than 165,000 loans totaling nearly $23 billion. More than 50 percent of USDA’s farm loans now go to beginning farmers. In addition, USDA has increased its lending to sociallydisadvantaged producers by nearly 50 percent since 2010. These programs were made possible by the 2014 Farm Bill, which builds on historic economic gains in rural America over the past five years, while achieving meaningful reform and billions of dollars in savings for taxpayers. Since enactment, USDA has made significant progress to implement each provision of this critical legislation, including providing disaster relief to farmers and ranchers; strengthening risk management tools; expanding access to rural credit; funding critical research; establishing innovative public-private conservation partnerships; developing new markets for rural-made products; and investing in infrastructure, housing and community facilities to help improve quality of life in rural America.
