Ohio Angus Breeders, Summer is officially in full swing. I hope that everyone has been able to stand the excess rain. However compared to this time 2 years ago I don’t think anyone is complaining about extra moisture. It definitely has the crops and pastures looking really good. The Ohio Angus Preview was held on June 13 & 14 in Eaton, OH. The show was a huge success with app. 75 head participating in the 2 day show. I want to Thank the Miami Valley Angus Association, for hosting the show and Brubaker Grain, Kalmbach Feeds & Southern States Supply for sponsoring the dinner on Saturday night. The National Junior Angus Show started July 12 and runs through July 18 in Tulsa, OK. Results on how the Ohio Angus Juniors fared will be included in next months issue. Before you know it the Ohio State Fair will be here as well. The Angus shows are Scheduled for Aug 1 & 2. I encourage everyone to take a day, attend the many attractions the state fair has to offer and take in a great Angus show. More details and complete schedule for the State Fair Angus show can be found on page 16. The Ohio Angus Board has a great Field Day planned on Sunday, September 6th at Burgett Angus in Carrollton, OH. More details are on page 9. I encourage everyone that can to attend this great event! The strength on the cattle market held strong through the spring. With most all of the spring Angus sales in Ohio and surrounding states seeing higher averages and grosses compared to recent years. I anticipate the demand for Angus based cows to hold through the fall. Industry News & Notes USDA Announces Conservation Incentives for Working Grass, Range and Pasture Lands WASHINGTON, July 15, 2015 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that beginning Sept. 1, farmers and ranchers can apply for financial assistance to help conserve working grasslands, rangeland and pastureland while maintaining the areas as livestock grazing lands. The initiative is part of the voluntary Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), a federally funded program that for 30 years has assisted agricultural producers with the cost of restoring, enhancing and protecting certain grasses, shrubs and trees to improve water quality, prevent soil erosion and reduce loss of wildlife habitat. In return, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides participants with rental payments and cost-share assistance. CRP has helped farmers and ranchers prevent more than 8 billion tons of soil from eroding, reduce nitrogen and phosphorous runoff relative to cropland by 95 and 85 percent respectively, and even sequester 43 million tons of greenhouse gases annually, equal to taking 8 million cars off the road. “A record 400 million acres and 600,000 producers and landowners are currently enrolled in USDA’s conservation programs. The Conservation Reserve Program has been one of the most successful conservation programs in the history of the country, and we are pleased to begin these grasslands incentives as we celebrate the program’s 30th year,” said Vilsack. “This is another great example of how agricultural production can work hand in hand with efforts to improve the environment and increase wildlife habitat.” The CRP-Grasslands initiative will provide participants who establish long-term, resource-conserving covers with annual rental payments up to 75 percent of the grazing value of the land. Cost-share assistance also is available for up to 50 percent of the covers and other practices, such as cross fencing to support rotational grazing or improving pasture cover to benefit pollinators or other wildlife. Participants may still conduct common grazing practices, produce hay, mow, or harvest for seed production, conduct fire rehabilitation, and construct firebreaks and fences. With the publication of the CRP regulation today, the Farm Service Agency will accept applications on an ongoing basis beginning Sept. 1, 2015, with those applications scored against published ranking criteria, and approved based on the competiveness of the offer. The ranking period will occur at least once per year and be announced at least 30 days prior to its start. The end of the first ranking period will be Nov. 20, 2015. Later this week, USDA will also announce state-by-state allotments for the State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement (SAFE). Through SAFE, also a CRP initiative, up to 400,000 acres of additional agricultural land across 37 states will be eligible for wildlife habitat restoration funding. The additional acres are part of an earlier CRP wildlife habitat announcement made by Secretary Vilsack. Currently, more than 1 million acres, representing 98 projects, are enrolled in SAFE. Industry News & Notes Angus Association Announces Updates to $Values
Selection indexes to undergo update July 10.
The American Angus Association®, through Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI), continues to improve the convenience of its many genetic selection tools. The Association Board of Directors earlier this year approved updating economic assumptions for its suite of dollar value indexes ($Values) in July, rather than the traditional December period, to avoid disruptions or significant changes during seasonal selection and marketing activities. The annual update will now take place in July, with the 2015 update scheduled for July 10. “Our selection indexes are a very useful tool for our members to help weigh traits most important to their commercial customers, and those indexes depend on certain economic assumptions,” explained Dan Moser, AGI president and Association director of performance programs. “Angus breeders and other folks who use registered Angus genetics in their commercial programs could see changes for indexes like $W, $F and $B when those assumptions are updated to more accurately reflect market conditions.” Timing is everything. Moser says running the analysis earlier in the year, farther from the peaks of sale season, should offer more convenience for members. Convenience and simplicity, after all, are at the root of multi-trait selection indexes. “Selection indexes allow cattle producers to make directional change in several traits at once while taking into account both genetics and economics,” says Tonya Amen, AGI director of genetic services. “An index may be challenging to develop, but the end result is easy to use in a multi-trait approach.” $Values are estimates of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database, if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Currently, the Association’s suite of $Values includes Weaned Calf Value ($W), Feedlot Value ($F), Grid Value ($G), Beef Value ($B) and Cow Energy Value ($EN). “What are the feed and other input costs? What are the revenue streams from the sale of fed cattle or weaned calves? The prices on those things are all dynamic,” Moser says. “Updating the economic assumptions allows us to more accurately describe the potential profitability differences between animals and improve how producers identify the genetics that best fit their operations.” $Values on individual animals may be viewed at www.angus.org. SAV Emblynette 5368 to Sell as 2016 Angus Foundation Heifer Schaff Angus Valley donates the 2016 Angus Foundation Heifer Package.
The Angus Foundation is proud to announce Schaff Angus Valley, Saint Anthony, N.D., as the donor of the Angus Foundation Heifer Package to be auctioned off at the 2016 National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo. Proceeds from the sale of this female benefit the Angus Foundation’s mission to support education, youth and research. The chosen female, SAV Emblynette 5368 (AAA Registration No. 18141862), is true foundation material and has been selected for her individual quality and maternal excellence. Stacking the time-tested Emblynette family on both sides of her pedigree, she is fortified with ten generations of a prolific cow family that was established at SAV in 1946. She is the one-of-a-kind natural daughter of the elite fifth-generation Pathfinder, SAV Emblynette 5483, who records a weaning ratio of 104 on seven calves and has earned a stellar production record, while her Pathfinder grandam remains productive in the SAV program at 18 years of age. “It is a pleasure and honor to contribute to the great work of the Angus Foundation that supports the Angus breed,” says Kelly Schaff. “Angus has been, and continues to be, the sole livelihood of our family.” Her popular full brother, SAV International 2020, is the $400,000 top-selling bull of the breed in 2013 and sired the lead-off sire group in the record-setting 2015 SAV sale, where 47 International progeny averaged $24,521 per head. International currently ranks among one of the most popular and widely-used sires to surface from the SAV program. “Being able to offer an elite Angus female from a nationally-recognized program, Schaff Angus Valley, is truly an honor for the Angus Foundation,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “We are humbled by their passion for helping our organization make a difference in the lives of our Angus youth through the scholarships, leadership training and educational opportunities made possible by the sale of this SAV Angus female.” Schaff Angus Valley was homesteaded in 1902 and is owned by Kelly and Martie Jo Schaff, along with their daughters, Kelsie and Kourtney, who are the fifth generation on the ranch. Schaff Angus Valley has hosted 112 production sales of registered-Angus cattle and has evolved into one of the largest and most recognized seedstock nurseries in the world.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, the American Angus Association® will host a drawing for a Cat® 262D Skid Steer Loader, generously donated by Caterpillar Inc. Any convention attendee present that day will be eligible to take home the machine. The Cat 262D, with rated operating capacity of 2,700 lb., is built with high-flow XPS hydraulics, allowing a number of work tools on the machine, including attachments for brush cutting, augers, brooms, buckets and blades.
“The Cat® 262D loader is an extremely versatile machine,” says Dustin Johansen, ag market segment manager for Caterpillar. “I think the lucky winner would be very excited with how much work they can get done in a short amount of time.” With the release of this new machine, Caterpillar is the first manufacturer to integrate a backup camera into the cab display, Johansen explains. If you are not buckled into the machine, the hydraulics are not activated — just one of many safety features on the Cat® 262D Skid Steer Loader. “With ease of operation with our joystick controls and the quietness of our cab, it provides a very good work environment, which makes cattle producers much more efficient, allowing them to spend more time with their family or hobbies,” Johansen says. Park Convention Center, located not far from downtown Kansas City, Mo. Make sure to stop by and try it on for size while attending the show. Caterpillar will also be hosting a Skid Steer Loader Operator Challenge, where participants can show off their driving skills and compete in a timed obstacle course. The winner will be announced in the trade show at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, and you must be present to win. “The American Angus Association has really started a great new relationship with Caterpillar,” says Becky Weishaar, Creative Media director and lead contact for the event. “We’re excited that they see the value in the quality of the beef produced in America, and look forward to having them as part of our growing trade show and convention this fall.” A must-attend event Thousands of cattle producers are expected to gather Nov. 3-5 for the annual meeting of the American Angus Association and a jam-packed schedule of keynote speakers, demonstrations and social events. Industry experts on genomic technology will be in the spotlight during the first-ever International Angus Genomics Symposium, sponsored by Neogen’s GeneSeek Operations; and Angus University, sponsored by Merck Animal Health, presents “A Story of a Steak” and what it takes to provide a quality eating experience to beef consumers worldwide. The Angus Media Trade Show will welcome more than 125 exhibitors representing animal health companies, publications, feed and nutrition, equipment manufacturers and more. Evening entertainment includes a concert by country singer Sammy Kershaw on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Visit www.angusconvention.com to register today for $75 per person. Delegates elected to represent their state during the Association’s Annual Convention may attend the Association business meetings for free; however, participation in convention education, meals, entertainment and trade show requires a full convention registration. Any registrations made after Oct. 2 will be on-site at the Overland Park Convention Center and at an increased price. ** In 2014, Ohio Angus will be updated the farm and business signs on display in the Ohio Angus Building at the Ohio Farm Science Review**
DEADLINE: September 5, 2015 • 2’ x 3’ Farm or Business Banners will replace the current signs. • Banners will cover the back wall of the Angus Building at FSR. • Banners will cost $30 printing fee + $50 yearly display fee. Annual display fee will be charged each summer, and must be paid before FSR for banner to be displayed. • Deadline to purchase banner is September 5, 2015. Must be submited as high resolution pdf or jpeg and fit 2’ x 3’ dimensions. • Banners will be taken down after show and stored for following year. Farms wanting to change or update their banners will be charged additional printing fee.
