Cuisine Pairs With Art at the Morean The Morean Arts Center in St. Petersburg is hard to define, perhaps because its vision is so big. There’s the main gallery, educational center and glass studio, the Chihuly Collection featuring glass artist Dale Chihuly and the Morean Arts Center for Clay. Paying Homage to Abstract Art C2 Fine Art feels like a Manhattan art gallery with its fresh open space, white walls and beautiful light wood floors. Everything is set up to showcase the contemporary art that Camden Mosesmann has been collecting for years. Originally from Connecticut, Camden is fairly new to the area and decided that the one thing missing from the St. Pete art scene was a space to pay homage to well-known abstract artists. Exhibits rotate every eight weeks. “I’m blessed to have the right connections to secure wonderful art, but at very affordable price points,” says Camden. The works are edgy, bold and colorful. Fisherman’s Paradise Imagine a five-star resort with all the amenities— fitness center, luxury bedroom suites, cocktail lounge, massage rooms, sauna, pool, fine dining and large lobby. Fisherman’s Paradise has all of that plus an unusual location. It’s out in the Gulf of Mexico, 90 miles from the “Middle Grounds” known for its outstanding fishing. The Hottest, Newest Trends of the Season Whether you’re designing and building your dream home, or planning a major remodel, small details can make all the difference. For inspiration, The duPont Registry™ Luxury Living in Tampa Bay asked a few local experts for their advice on the right products, colors and styles for creating a luxury residence that makes a statement. Everyone’s In The Kitchen Kitchens have evolved as the centerpiece of the home—the place where families love to gather to talk, cook, eat, do homework, play on the computer and even entertain. The latest trend, says Patty Figiel of Leverette Home Design, is kitchen cabinetry with less detail and cleaner lines, almost a Shaker style. “We’re also seeing one or two cabinets with a glass front or little squares of glass at the top with an interior light. You can showcase a collection without the need to dust and the soft lighting adds a warm glow to the room.” With cooking a favorite pastime these days, there’s a big demand for high-end,
high-tech appliances that save time and give fabulous results. Lynn Kislin of Appliance Gallery points to the new MasterChef convection speed oven as the perfect example. “One of the great features is that it has both an infrared broiling system and a microwave function,” says Kislin. “If you want to cook something small like a baked potato, popcorn or a chicken, you can use the microwave. You can cook a chicken in just 20 minutes and it will come out brown and crisp on the outside and moist inside.” Convection steam ovens are also high on Kislin’s “must-have” list. Once avail-
able for commercial kitchens only, now homeowners can take advantage of the oven’s features, which include the option of cooking with steam only or convection only, or a combination of the two. “It’s perfect for fish because it holds the odor and doesn’t dry out the fish,” says Kislin. For a kitchen that pushes the envelope for artistic creativity, T2theS is earning a reputation for their custom, modern kitchens like the “all-black” kitchen they recently did that features dyed Koto wood cabinets and countertops made with concrete. “Concrete is an interesting material because we can design a chunky countertop and incorporate different colors

and finishes, resulting in a marble or terrazzo look,” says Derek Grasso. “The result is really spectacular.” Quartz countertops are also very “in.” Dan O’Donnell of Cutting Edge Granite reports that Consumer Reports just ranked quartz number one for kitchens and baths for the third year. Why quartz? “It’s one of the most abundant materials on earth so it’s environmentally friendly,” says O’Donnell. “It is also non-porous, stain-resistant and extremely durable—harder than a knife blade and virtually maintenance-free. “ Quartz has the appearance of natural stone and comes in a variety of colors, from white to cream, terra cotta, green, brown, grey, even blue.

With our busy, stressful lives, it’s essential to have an area at home to unwind and relax. Nowadays, it’s the bathroom that is serving as a tranquil retreat, says Patty Figiel, a certified kitchen designer with Leverette Home Design Center. To create a spa-like ambience, consider a free-standing bathtub with a sleek, contemporary design. Sherell White of Herman Home also suggests a Jacuzzi tub or a luxurious shower that features the heavenly sensation of rain panels and a body jet for a wonderful at-home massage. Technology is helping redesign today’s bathrooms, which are often filled with high-tech toys, like Kohler’s new Numi smart toilet. This is a toilet with amazing multi-tasking capabilities, all controlled by a detachable remote, says Nathan Parker of Ferguson Kitchens and Bath. “The Numi has a heated seat and foot warmer, automatic sensors that open and close the lid and flush the toilet,” says Parker. “There’s even an area to hook your iPod into it.”

While LED lights are the number one choice for energy-efficiency, Vazquez points out that they give off a “cool” light. On the other hand, fluorescent light has a bluish glow, while incandescent is yellow. Halogen is used more as a soft accent, as in a wall sconce. For the kitchen, Vazquez recommends using all of them to achieve a “layered” effect that will give a cozy, warm feeling to the room combined with sufficient bright light for the workspace. What’s new in lighting fixture design? The trend is toward a blend of traditional and contemporary, like a modern lamp shade on a traditional base, says Vazquez. A chandelier may have the traditional curved arms and lots of crystals, but the overall design is more modern and clean.
Windows, Doors & Gates Add the Finishing Touch Window coverings have a lot of tasks to accomplish: privacy, light control, glare, and heat reduction, energy efficiency. Motorized solar screen shades are one of the latest products that do all of these things, says Judy Dechant of Mar-Go Interiors. “They come in an assortment of colors, textures and weaves, plus you can operate them with a remote control or integrate them into a home automation system,” says Dechant. She recommends using the shade as a first layer, then dressing up the window with drapery panels or a top panel in a fabric that ties into the color scheme of the room. “Draperies soften the look of the window and add a nice touch, almost like a piece of art, especially if you have a whole wall of windows,” she says. The right type of door is also vital to creating that “WOW” factor for your home. Mark Leek of DoorPro Entryways recommends replacing old drafty, sliding glass doors with custom, energy efficient French doors. “The new French doors have a lot more aesthetic value and a higher wind-load capability,” says Leek. “They’re also much more secure.” Personalize your French door with an etched design of your choosing or incorporate mini-blinds within the glass for more privacy.

Interior Design When it comes to the interior of the home, Tampa Bay residents have a broad range of styles to choose from. Contemporary trendsetters like Herman Home are moving toward nurturing environments that reflect a simplified, clean-lined approach, especially as more people scale back and remodel outdated spaces, says designer Sherell White. “We’re creating the illusion of more space by avoiding visual clutter and raising the height of draperies to the ceiling, floating cabinetry and using furniture with legs.” Earth tones of green, blue and chocolate brown add to this sense of relaxation and calm. What is great food without great wine? One of America’s oldest cities, first incorporated in 1630 and established as a city in 1822, Boston is rich in the history of our country, and much of it is easily accessible simply by walking through the city’s streets and parks. The Freedom Trail, one of America’s first historic walking tours, meanders through the city, highlighting 16 historical sites that span two-and-a-half centuries of our country’s history. Take two or three hours to devote to a self-guided tour, or sign up for a guided tour through the Boston Common Visitors Center. Start at Boston Common and make your way through the city’s streets, past historic landmarks such as the Boston Massacre Site, Paul Revere’s House, and the USS Constitution, ending up at the Bunker Hill Memorial. Though two or three hours are suggested for the tour, you may find yourself lingering at various displays and stopping at other sites along the way. For instance, Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Serving as a meeting hall and marketplace since 1742, today you’ll find myriad shops and cafes to browse and stop for a cup of coffee, or a delicious, quick lunch or elegant dinner. “Old Ironsides,” the nickname for the USS Constitution, is the oldest fully commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy and is permanently docked at the Charlestown Navy Yard.
Boston is a terrific family destination, too. Sure, there’s all of the history that can be seen and talked about and learned, but the city has other kid-friendly destinations that are worth the visit.

8 oz filet of black grouper or red grouper (fresh domestic never Mexican or import) 10 to 20 scallops 16-20 pink shrimp (do not use tiger shrimp they are very tough) 1 ⁄8 pound jumbo lump crabmeat One shallot, chopped
One green onion, chopped ⁄ cup white wine 1 cup flour Pinch salt/pepper 6 ozs heavy cream 4 ozs Romano (you may substitute parmesan) 2 ozs olive oil

Preheat oven to 500 degrees Servings: 1 In a 10-inch skillet over high heat add oil. As oil is getting hot take one cup flour, add a pinch of salt and pepper then mix. Lightly salt grouper on each side then dust in flour and add to sauté pan. Sauté the fish for one to two minutes on each side or until golden brown. Add scallops to pan and sear one side. After searing grouper and scallops, add a pinch of shallots, pinch of green onion to pan with a teaspoon of butter. When shallots turn a light brown deglaze pan with white wine. Add your shrimp then place entire pan in the oven for 3 to 5minutes. Plate grouper and arrange scallops and shrimps on top of filet. Add heavy cream, lump crabmeat and Romano to pan. Reduce to desired consistency (a creamy soup). Ladle sauce over fish and enjoy. This dish is not cheap to make but is a unbelievably light and you will WOW your dinner guests.

Preheat oven to 500 degrees Servings: 1 Mix all ingredients in a medium bowl with fork till blended well without overworking. Mold on a serving plate, garnish with celery, onion, whole capers and serve immediately with crackers, chips, toast or rye toast. Bern's Rye Toast Preheat oven to 350 degrees 1-1⁄2 ozs buttermilk 2 ozs whole wheat flour 1 4⁄ oz each sea salt and caraway seeds 1oz baked and mashed potato 1 ⁄2 oz butter 2 1⁄4 oz packages active dry yeast 1 ⁄2 oz molasses 1⁄2 oz honey 2 ozs warm water In mixing bowl dissolve yeast in the warm water, add the rest of the ingredients, mix well. On floured surface; knead about 5 minutes till smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl, cover. Let rest for about half an hour. Knead for 1 more minute and shape into a round log, place on a greased pan and bake at 350 degrees, 15 minutes. Cool. Slice 14⁄ inches thick and toast.

Preheat oven to 500 degrees Servings: 2 In a medium sauce pan start by getting the olive oil hot. Add portabella mushrooms and onions cooking until onions are translucent. Add garlic and seafood searing briefly. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes uncovered. Serve your cippino over a creamy polenta with garlic bread. It's traditionaly served with toast and aoli.

Crust 12 ozs flour 8 ozs butter 4 ozs water, ice cold Preheat oven to 500 degrees
Filling 1.5 qts heavy cream, 40% 4.5 cups sugar 1.5 lbs walnuts, chopped Yields: 1 12.5 tart mold
Crust: Cut butter into flour using a cutting tool. Add half of the water and knead into dough. Fold remaining water into dough. When finished kneading, dough should not stick to the bowl. Adjust with more flour, if needed. Divide dough into two equal parts. Cover and allow to rest overnight in the refrigerator. Filling: In a heavy sauce pan, combine cream and sugar. Over medium-low heat allow to reduce by half the volume. Spread nuts in a shallow casserole dish and pour reduced cream and sugar mixture over nuts. Refrigerate overnight. Assembly: Grease tart mold. Roll one portion of the dough and set into tart mold, filling crevices. Spread cold filling into crust. Roll out rest of dough cutting into eight strips. Place strips on top in a lattice design. Bake at 325 degrees until golden brown, about 35–40 minutes. Allow pie to cool before demolding. Refrigerate overnight before cutting.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Servings: 4 Marinate the duck breast in the pomegranate molasses overnight. Drain and season the meat with salt and pepper. Sear the duck, skin side down, in a hot sauté pan for three minutes. Finish in a 350-degree oven for an additional 7–10 minutes. Cook to medium rare. Sauce: Sauté the diced shallots with very little oil then deglaze with the grappa. Once the grappa reduces by half, add Chianti. Reduce wine by half and add the fresh pomegranates. Add the demiglace and reduce until sauce is coating the back of a spoon and then strain it. Drizzle over duck.

1 lemon, zest and juice 1 tblsp extra virgin olive oil (plus some for planks) Sea salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 475 degrees Servings: 4 Sauce: Combine ingredients and lemon zest in a small glass dish. Coat salmon filets with marinade and allow to marinate for one hour. Procedure: Remove cedar planks from soaking water. Rub cedar planks with extra virgin olive oil. Place salmon filets on cedar planks and season with sea salt and fresh ground pepper. Roast salmon 8–10 minutes (depending on size of filets). Serve with lemon and your favorite side dishes. NOTES: Select premium salmon filets—wild or organic; Cedar planks—available at gourmet grocery stores; Soak cedar planks overnight in water.

Sous Vide Eggs: Heat water bath with immersion circulator to 63 degrees Celsius. Place eggs in shell in bath, cook 45 minutes. Confit tomatoes: Place grape tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, and thyme sprigs in oven safe pan. Bake until tomatoes just begin to explode. Remove from oven. Allow tomatoes to cool in oil at room temperature. Risotto: Cook bacon in a sauce pan over medium heat. Once bacon is cooked and crispy, remove bacon, leaving the rendered fat. Add onion and garlic to bacon fat. Cook on low heat until soft and translucent. Add rice to pan. Stir one minute to coat in bacon fat. Begin adding stock in 3 ounce increments. Stir constantly until rice is 80% cooked. Remove confit tomatoes from their oil and lightly crush over the pan of rice to catch any juice. Add cheddar and cream to risotto; continue cooking and stirring over medium heat. Stir in the reserved crispy bacon, minced chives, and crushed tomatoes. Place risotto in bottom of shallow bowl. Make a small well in center of rice. Crack shell of a sous vide egg, remove the egg and place in well in rice.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Servings: 4 Pound veal into thin pieces. Lightly coat veal with flour, salt and pepper. In a hot saute pan with oil, cook veal for 3 minutes on each side. Remove veal. Sauce: Add to saute pan 1 teaspoon of garlic, 4 ounces of white wine. Cook garlic and wine for 2 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon butter and juice of half of a lemon. Keep warm. This is the sauce for the dish. In a different hot saute pan add 1 ounce oil, 1 tablespoon garlic. Add blanched broccolini, salt and pepper. Add potatoes. Cook in oven for 25–30 minutes. Presentation: Place potatoes in center of plate, top with roasted broccolini. Then place veal strips around the potatoes and broccolini. Tropical rice 1 cup basmati rice 1 oz coconut oil 1 cup blood orange juice 1 cup water 1 ⁄2 oz lime juice 1 ⁄4 oz ginger, minced
Servings: 4 ⁄ cup red onion, diced ⁄ cup red pepper, diced 2 tblsp cilantro, chopped 1 tblsp jalapeno, diced 2 tsp lime juice 1 pinch salt

Grouper: Bread grouper with shredded coconut and let rest in refrigerator at least 1 hour. Prepare rice and salsa. Rice: In a saucepan over medium-high heat, melt coconut oil then add the basmati rice. Stir until rice is nice and coated with oil. Add the blood orange juice, water, lime juice, ginger and salt. Bring to a full boil, cover and turn heat down to low. Simmer 18–20 minutes. While the rice is cooking, toast shredded coconut and almonds in a small pan over medium-high heat until lightly toasted. When rice is done, fluff with a fork and add coconut, craisins, cilantro and chopped almonds. Mango Salsa: Mix ingredients together. When ready to cook grouper: Combine butter and olive oil in a saute pan over medium-high heat. When the two are melted together and the butter is fragrant, sear the grouper on each side for about 2–3 minutes. Remove the grouper from the pan and finish in the oven for about 8–10 minutes, or until the fish reaches 145-degrees internally. Sprinkle with blood orange zest.

1 can Coke or Pepsi ¼ medium-sized watermelon, chopped Cherry & Basil Corn Bread 1 cup Bing cherries, dried 8 basil leaves, finely chopped 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup yellow corn meal ¼ cup white sugar
Pinch of salt 3 ½ tsp baking powder 1 egg 1 cup milk 1/3 cup vegetable oil baby Heirloom tomatoes baby fennel 1 lb butter, salted
Lamb chops: Brush with garlic oil and fresh ground black pepper. Season with kosher salt. Pre-heat your BBQ to high. Cook to desired internal temperature. Watermelon & Mint Barbeque Sauce: Take chopped watermelon and Pepsi and reduce over medium high heat for 20 minutes or until liquid starts to thicken. Add remainder of ingredients and simmer for one hour or until the sauce gets the consistency to coat the back of a spoon. Season with salt and pepper. Let cool and puree in a blender. Set aside. Cherry & Basil Cornbread: In large bowl combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt and baking powder. Stir in egg, milk and vegetable oil until well combined. Add basil and cherries. Pour into buttered casserole dish. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Roasted Baby Heirloom Tomatoes: Cut tomatoes in half and season with fresh ground black pepper, olive oil, kosher salt and the Anise greens from the top of the baby fennel. Roast in oven for 10 minutes. Butter Poached Baby Fennels: Melt 1 pound salted butter. Heat butter to just below simmering. Cut fennel in half lengthwise and drop into butter for about 2 minutes. Turkey: Rinse turkey breast under cold water and pat dry. Place in small roasting pan, brush with melted butter, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place in oven for approximately 30–40 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. Reduction: Meanwhile, start your reduction. Add all the ingredients to a saucepan and cook on medium heat for approximately 30 minutes or until a thick, syrup consistency is achieved. In a mixing bowl add rutabaga, apple, butter, salt, pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. Use potato masher or electric mixer on low until mixture is somewhat smooth. Do not over mix as some lumps create texture. Finely dice sage leaves, beat eggs and fold into mixture along with bread crumbs. Pour rutabaga and apple mixture into a greased casserole dish or individual ramekins. Topping: Mix ingredients together. Top each ramekin with pecan mixture. Place in oven for 30 minutes. Casserole should turn golden brown on top and be firm to the touch. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving. dR

LOKEY MERCEDES-BENZ GRAND OPENING Celebrating the Mercedes-Benz newly renovated multi-million dollar facility at 19820 US Highway 19 North, 300 plus guests enjoyed live music, catering by Salt Rock Grill, and Neiman Marcus models showcasing fall fashions. Guests were surprised to literally be painted into a commissioned piece of artwork by internationally acclaimed artist Joan Zylkin. Guest of honor Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard received a Gold Key to the dealership from the Lokey family. Executive General Manager Bill Reilly proudly remarked: “Our dealership may be pushing 60 years old but we are still accelerating.”
2011 FARA ENERGY BALL The FARA Energy Ball once again proved to be an event to remember raising more than $1,000,000. Over 800 people enjoyed an evening of great food and libations while bidding on amazing silent and live auction items. Honorary chairs were Tara and Tod Leiweke, Tampa Bay Lightning CEO. Wendy Ryan of WTFS-TV was the emcee. The evening culminated in a live performance by the Gin Blossoms.

18TH ANNUAL STEPPING OUT GALA: ENDLESS SUMMER The 18th Annual Stepping Out Gala Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Downtown. The coastal chic affair, chaired by Dr. Tracy and Matt Halme, celebrated the opening of the new St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital Tower. Nearly $400,000 in support of St. Joseph’s Hospitals was generated from sponsorships, special gifts, and silent and live auctions. In addition, Suncoast Hyundai dealers and Hyundai Motor America presented a $100,000 Hyundai “Hope Grant” to support services for children with cancer at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital.

Rocks Beach by three friends with one vision—to capture life on canvas. Award winning artists, Mary Rose Holmes, Violetta Chandler and Helen Tilston have been painting together for the past ten years. All three represented the USA at the juried invitational Florence Biennale in Italy and were bestowed a lifetime invitation. Florida Trust for Historic Preservation awarded the artists for their untiring efforts in preserving the history of Florida. Their paintings have graced the walls in the cabinet meeting room in Tallahassee, The Leepa Rattner Museum and Cornell Museum. The artists are frequently spotted painting at Indian Rocks Beach, dressed elegantly in flowing skirts and straw hats with half French easels in place. “There is an incandescent aura surrounding these womans which reflects in their paintings,” exclaimed Michael Anthony. All paintings are one of a kind and painted on location, in oil on canvas. The artists are the “featured artist” for Martini’s and Matisse in 2012 and are donating a triptych, one panel painted by each artist, which when put together forms one cohesive scene. “Artists have collaborated in the past but to my knowledge no artists have painted in this manner,” says Lyn Whitelaw, Director of Leepa Rattner Museum. Each year the artists produce a calendar, of their paintings, and the proceeds benefit Indian Rocks Beach Library and Museum. The artists have recently travelled and painted in: Italy, France, England, Ireland, Bermuda and Hawaii. dR
