Aston Martin Virage he Virage, with a base price around $210,000, fills a hole in the Aston Martin lineup between the $190,000 DB9 and the $270,000 DBS. Based on the same architecture as the two aforementioned cars, the Virage does not set itself apart in any meaningful way from its stablemates. Between the two, it will remind most people of the DB9. Both offer 2+2 and 2+0 seating. Both are powered by a 6.0-liter V-12 engine. And both look very similar. The car almost begs the

question: if no one knows, why bother? The difference is actually there, it is just not clearly apparent. The Virage splits the difference in horsepower between the DB9 and DBS. Aston Martin has also added a bit more sport to the Adaptive Damping System (ADS) (the suspension was just added to the DB9 for 2011). The result is a slight uptick in performance. Think of the Virage as a DB9 with a mild performance package and a revised look. The all-new name just adds appeal.

ston Martin engineers knew that one day the flagship DBS coupe would lose its top to become the DBS Volante. Aston Martin Rapide

he Rapide is Aston Martin’s stylish four-door “coupe.” It sacrifices a little bit of rear seat comfort and ease of ingress/egress with its “swan” doors for flowing lines that will make hearts palpitate. The Rapide is good looking. It is also powerful. The tried-and-true 6.0-liter V-12 offered in nearly every Aston also does work in the Rapide. With 470 hp on tap, the Rapide can scoot to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds. Quick, but, unfortunately, the competition is quicker. The Rapide really needs the 510-hp version of that same engine. Instead, Aston Martin decided to massage the Rapide’s already standout feature: its luxury. A special Rapide Luxe model takes things up a notch with two new colors, Concours Blue and Quantum Silver; an exclusive set of 20-inch rims; and new glass-faced switches on the center con-

Aston Martin One-77 he One-77 is Aston Martin’s first supercar. Formed from aluminum by hand, its body is taut, curvaceous and undeniably Aston Martin. Picturesque yet race bred, the One-77 features a carbon-fiber monocoque, adjustable suspension, specially developed tires, and an engine that sits 3.9 inches lower than any other Aston Martin V-12. Squeezing in between the flagship One-77 and the DBS, the V-12 Zagato is priced at £330,000 or approximately $528,000. Limited to 150 units and being sold on a first-come first-served basis, the V-12 Zagato is the work of Italian coachbuilder Zagato and pays homage to the 1961 DB4GT Zagato. Aston Martin says the car’s design would not be possible using pre-formed panel techniques and required Zagato’s expertise to construct every aluminum panel by hand. For instance, the iconic Zagato double-bubble roof is created from five separate pieces melded into a single flowing form. The V-12 Zagato is based off the fastest and most agile Vantage ever. The V-12 Vantage features a 6.0-liter V-12 engine producing 510 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque with a top speed of 190 mph and 0–62 mph time of 4.2 seconds; with less weight to move, we anticipate the Zagato car to perform even better.

ere is a testament to how easy it is to fall in love with the R8: One of the owners of the duPont REGISTRY purchased an Audi R8 Spyder and loved it so much he immediately sold it and bought an Audi R8 5.2 FSI Spyder. It is an all-aroundgreat two-seat sports car. From the get-go, complaints revolved around the need for more speed. Audi listened and dropped a Lamborghini-derived 525-hp V-10 into the car’s engine bay. Soon after, it cut the top off the V-10 coupe to create the 5.2 FSI Spyder. Still some clamored that the V-10 wasn’t powerful enough. To those people, Audi now offers the limited-edition 560-hp R8 GT. For 2012, you can acquire the GT without its roof. To lower the price of the convertible car, a V8-equipped Spyder was added for 2011, but Audi downplays it. BMW Motorsports stablished in 1972 as a racing division, BMW M did not put an actual M badges on any production cars until the M1 appeared in 1978. A short decade later, M products were so popular that BMW decided a special M derivative would be available for every new generation of the 5-Series and 3-Series. It has since gone on to offer Motorsport editions of its small Z3 and Z4 coupes and roadsters, 6-Series cars, and even two of its SUVs. With the 1-Series M Coupe, BMW is in many ways bringing back the M3s of yore. The M3 has grown bigger, heavier (and more powerful), and more expensive with every new model. The BMW 1-Series brings back some of the panache from the M3s of yesteryear while allowing a younger audience to access the driving experience only found in an M car. With its 340-hp twin-turbo inline-six engine; M3 suspension, brakes, and rims; aggressive body add-ons; and single year of production, the 1Series M Coupe is already a future classic.

They will follow the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 in BMW’s pursuit of more efficient vehicles without sacrificing the superior driving dynamics for which the luxury brand is known. Part of the concept car’s physical allure also helps it achieve its goal of low fuel con-sumption through well-developed aerodynamics. so the BMW i8 takes advantage of large wing doors that open wide to facilitate entry to both the front and rear chairs. We just hope BMW is going to offer an easy way to close the large doors once all the occupants are seated. The interior was designed around its functionality and uses large, transparent surfaces to give the cabin a bright, airy, and open feel. The use of aluminum and carbon-fiberreinforced plastic (CFRP) helps keep weight down to around 3,200 pounds. The concept was powered by a three-cylinder 1.5liter turbo diesel at the rear axle and an electric motor at the front. The production car will provide a similar setup, replacing the diesel engine with a fuel-efficient but powerful gasoline unit. The high performance three-cylinder engine produces 220 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque alone. Combined with the electric motor’s 129 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque and we have a total system output of 349 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. It is good for sprints to 62 mph from a standstill in 4.6 seconds, a 50–75-mph time of 4.0 seconds, and a top speed limited to 155 mph. Thanks to the two drive systems, the BMW i8 can perform like a front-, rear-, or all-wheel-drive vehicle. The BMW i8 Concept can travel up to 22 miles on electric power alone for zeroemissions motoring. After the battery is depleted, the gasoline motor will kick in. The concept held a six-gallon fuel tank for a total extended range of up to 435 miles. BMW did not specify the total range for the production car. Bentley Flying Spur irst seen on the Continental GT and GTC in 2009, the Series 51 is the name for a range of recommended color and trim combinations created by Bentley’s designers at the company’s headquarters in Crewe, England. The Series 51 package offers 14 unique motifs to better suit its customers’ individual tastes. So, although the Flying Spur Series 51 has not received the same facelift as the Continental GT and GTC, it will offer some new interesting design elements for 2012.

Bentley Mulsanne igger yet lighter and redesigned from the chassis up, it is hard to believe that the Mulsanne was at one point going to be a sort of Flying Spurlike replacement, complete with W-12 engine and all-wheel drive, for the Arnage. Luckily, customer feedback shelved that idea to retain something similar to the exiting car’s timeless elegance, hulking posture, and immense power. The Mulsanne expounds on the Arnage’s mammoth stance but uses aluminum and composite materials to shave off 66 pounds of unnecessary weight. It uses the tried and true 6.75-lter twin-turbocharged pushrod V-8 that also produced gobs of low-end torque in the Arnage. Two systems, cam phasing and cylinder deactivation, work to help increase fuel efficiency by 15 percent. The engine is connected to an eightspeed automatic transmission that utilizes paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel—a first for a Bentley sedan. In addition, the car’s air suspension and steering effort can be adjusted to one of four settings.

Bentley Continental GT

entley revealed some mild styling and power enhancements for the Continental GT in late 2010, although the changes are officially for the 2012 model year. The two-door coupe now offers sharper lines, a more upright grille, and new headlamps and taillamps. It is also lighter than the car it replaces by 143 pounds. In addition to less weight to move, the car also produces more power. The 6.0-liter 12-cylinder twin-turbocharged FlexFuel powertrain now produces 15 more horsepower and 51 more lb-ft of torque for 567 hp and 516 lb-ft. It is not as much as the 2011 Continental GT Speed or Supersports but offers similar performance: 0â€“60 mph in 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 198 mph. The biggest change is the addition of a new highoutput 4.0-liter V-8 engine. It will reduce emissions by 40 percent compared with the W-12 engine and provides a new price entry point into the Continental model lineup. Bentley has yet to confirm details about the new engine but it should be available in 2012. For those looking for a little bespoke style, Bentley Mulliner offers a range of styling options for the 2012 Continental GT including a unique front bumper, side extensions, rear diffuser, a rear spoiler, and more. Nearly every element is made of high-gloss black carbon fiber featuring a distinctive weave design and will be installed by the dealer.

Bentley Continental GTC

ollowing the introduction of the new Bentley Continental GT in late 2010 as a 2012 model, Bentley has released first details on Continental GTC, which will go on sale the same year. Building on the changes we first saw on the coupe, the 2012 GTC features a more sculpted body, giving it a sharper and less bulbous appearance. The GTC’s grille is more upright and new headlamps offer jewel-like detailing with LED lights. At the rear, Bentley’s “floating” LED lamps now extend around the corners. A new trunk design also now features a powerful “dou-

ble horse-shoe,” much like the Mulsanne. Twenty-inch wheels accent the strong fenders and are now standard. The GTC will also follow the Mulsanne and new 2012 GT coupe in offering 21-inch wheels from the factory. The 2012 GTC is a hair longer, and smidge taller, and more than an inch wider. Despite its near identical proportions, it weighs 100 pounds less than the outgoing car. sion (shift times are cut in half to 200 milliseconds), Bentley says the 2012 GTC will accelerate zero-to-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and top out at 195 mph. That makes it faster than the 2011 GTC and on par with the 2011 GTC Speed. A wider track, both front and rear, sharper steering, retuned suspension, and rear-wheel-bias 40:60 split in the fourwheel-drive system helps cut understeer and provide a more balanced and sporty feel. But the Continental GTC is not a track car and part of its allure comes from the

sumptuous handcrafted cabin, including premium leather, real wood veneers, bright metals, and soft carpets. It is complemented by a multi-layered fabric top and acoustic glass for better noise isolation. The cabin of the 2012 GTC also provides new storage solutions, a Bentley-designed Mercedes-Benz Airscarf-mimicked neck warmer for more comfortable roof-down motoring in extreme climates, and additional rear legroom thanks to its new front chairs. his is as much a memorial as a celebration of what the Veyron accomplished in its six years of production. As assembly comes to a close on the fixed roof car and the last of the open-top Grand Sports are finished, the Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 will always be remembered as the car everyone tried to beat. It may be the pinnacle car of our lifetime. Everything about the Bugatti Veyron, from the engine to the tires, was designed from scratch to create one of the most prolific cars of all time. Bugatti has sold 260 regular Veyrons and 35 of its open-top Grand Sports. Production of the closed coupe ended in 2011 and for the last 40 units, Bugatti turned things up a notch. proving grounds, a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport achieved an average top speed of 267.81 mph, making it the fastest production car on the planet. How did Bugatti make a car capable of 253 mph even faster? Four enlarged turbochargers and bigger intercoolers bring horsepower up 20 percent to a cool 1,200. Carbon fiber for the monocoque structure reduces weight by approximately 100 pounds. Stronger stabilizers and new shock absorbers developed originally for racing add safety at deathwish speeds and the ability to hold its grip on the road at up to 1.4g of lateral acceleration. The body features smooth lines and is now made entirely of carbon fiber. It offers a flatter and longer silhouette. Twin ducts flattened into the roof feed the mas-

sive 6.0-liter W-12 engine. Performance is nothing less than stunning: 0–62 mph in 2.5 seconds, 124 mph in 6.7 seconds, and through the quarter-mile gates in 9.7 seconds. It will go from a standstill to 100 mph and back to a standstill in 9.2 seconds. At 1.9-million euros, or $2.7 million at the time of this writing, the Super Sport is not only the fastest production car on the planet, it is also one of the most expensive. Price aside, the Super Sport doesn’t fit any normal supercar mold. It’s neither a track toy or a grand touring car. It is an absolutely unnecessary technological masterpiece that still sits at the top of the supercar pile six years after it was first introduced. he lines on the CTS-V Coupe represent the best use of Cadillac’s Art and Science design language to date. The coupe is just drop-dead gorgeous. It is both cutting edge and classy. It takes the best angle of the sedan (the front) and adds the right curves and lines to the rest of the car to captivate the eyes from nearly any angle. Like the sedan, the coupe comes with GM’s 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine.

Planting the throttle from a stop in the coupe is a neck-snapping head-rush-generating thrill ride that feels like it never wants to stop. We would say it even feels a tad faster than the sedan. It also seems to handle the corners a tad better, which may in part be due to the coupe's nearly one-inch wider rear track and lighter weight. Besides an air of cheapness caused by some easily scratched shiny black inlays inside, the CTS-V Coupe is easy to recommend.

M faked to the Z28 name, the automotive press bit hard, and it instead lobbed the ball over to the ZL1 designation (although rumors still say a Z28 may be in the works). The ZL1 name stems from an all-aluminum engine installed into a handful of 1969 Camaros. Since then, all 69 of those cars have achieved mythical status among enthusiasts; GM hopes the new ZL1 will live up to its legacy. The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 replaces the SS as the best-performing factory Camaro of all time. Think of the new

ZL1 as a Cadillac CTS-V in a cheaper suit and thus requiring fewer funds to purchase. It utilizes the same 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine producing 550 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque. It also steals the CTS-V’s Magnetic Ride Control suspension. Unlike the Cadillac, the Camaro ZL1 will come with a six-speed manual transmission. Major elements of the ZL1’s design are a new front fascia, diffuser, rear spoiler, rocker panels, and aluminum hood with a raised, carbon-fiber insert.

hile we wait for the 2014 C7, GM has a laundry list of performance and interior refinements for the 2012 C6 to keep customers’ interests up. A new performance packages now sits atop its ZR1 performance package. It includes new wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires and revised ratios for the overdrive gears. The latter helps reduce fuel consumption on the highway while the ultra-sticky wear-quickly street-legal Cup tires helped it lap the Nurburgring two seconds faster than the Dodge Viper ACR (which wears the same tires) and six seconds faster than its previous record. The Z07 performance package for the Z06 will also attain these special wheels and tires. All Corvettes gets new seats and can be ordered in a special Centennial pack-

the big news for the Ferrari faithful for 2012 is the addition of the 458 Spider to the lineup. Unlike its predecessors, Ferrari has ditched the fabric convertible mechanism for a Superamerica-like flip-top configuration. Where the Superamerica’s transparent roof flipped atop the rear lid, the 458 Spider’s rear glass and bulk of the roof separate and stack before flipping under a raised tonneau cover. Ferrari says its patented design keeps the folded roof from intruding into rear engine compartment or cabin area and even leaves room for a small luggage bench behind the two chairs. Made entirely from aluminum, the 458 Spider’s top apparatus weighs 55 pounds less than a traditional soft-top and opens and closes in a fast-for-a-hardtop 14 seconds. Altogether, Ferrari says the 458 Spider (it dropped the Italia part for the convertible) is 111 pounds heavier than the coupe for a dry weight of 3,153 pounds; we anticipate its curb weight to be around 3,400 pounds. 62 mph in 3.5 seconds and top out at more than 198 mph, a modest increase of 0.1 of a second and decrease of four miles per hour compared to the coupe. The new rear cover features two large and six smaller intakes feeding the engine and cooling the radiators for the clutch and gearbox oil. Air is diverted inward by two large roll hoops behind and on either side of the passengers’ chairs. The visuals provided by the intake vents and buttresses, especially from an angle above the car, are nothing short of mesmerizing. The rest of the Pininfarina-penned coupe’s aerodynamically sculpted lines and compact shape are retained. The only item we will miss is the transparent rear window with easy visual access to the 4.5-liter V-8 engine. Like the coupe, and an often-unmentioned aspect of the 458 Italia, the car’s screaming engine normally creates 557 hp and only makes the full 562 when the little deformable flaps in the front intakes are flattened at very high speeds. The V-8 features direct fuel injection for less fuel consump-

tion and emissions while improving performance. Despite its high-revving nature, the power plant puts out 80 percent of its 398 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm. Of course, the traditional flat-plane racing crankshaft and triple exhaust parlay with the 9,000-rpm redline to produce a mechanical aria that is as patriotic sounding to Italian car lovers as the car’s name. Ferrari says it tweaked the 458 Spider’s exhaust note further for even more ear splendor within the cabin. The sublime F430 is a pretty tough act to follow, but with the original 458 Italia and now with the 458 Spider, Ferrari has surpassed most people’s expectations while raising the bar on the other exotic-car manufacturers. errari has made big strides in new directions recently, specifically with the California and now with the FF (Ferrari Four). The California was the first Ferrari to offer a hardtop convertible mechanism, dual-clutch automated manual transmission, and a front-mounted V-8. The FF is the first Ferrari to offer all-wheel drive and a wagon-like design (Europeans will call it a shooting brake, which does make it sound better). Despite the hatch out back, the Pininfarina-penned coupe is endearing, although some may refuse to call it outright beautiful. What everyone will like is the Enzo-based 6.3-liter 651-hp V-12 engine out front. It can send the FF and up to 28.3 cubic feet of cargo inside from zero to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 208 mph. Thanks to start/stop technology,

it is able to perform at such high levels while returning up to 30 percent better fuel economy than the less powerful 612 Scaglietti. The biggest news, however, is how that power makes it to the road. The Ferrari FF’s power will be routed through two transmissions, one for the rear wheels and one for the front wheels. The front transmission sits ahead of the front-mid engine, connects to the crankshaft through a conical gear, and offers two forward and a reverse gear. Power will only be diverted to the front wheels when the car is about to lose traction at the rear wheels. Also, due to the gear ratios of the front transmission, the four-wheeldrive system does not work above the fourth cog. This gives the FF a rearwheel-drive demeanor with four-wheeldrive grip that is nothing short of tenacious. With better room for four, more cargo carrying capabilities, and allweather traction, the FF fills a gap that Ferrari has never tried to fill with its other fair-weather track cars.

o what’s so special about the 599 GTO? For starters, it’s a GTO, a model designation Ferrari has only bestowed on two other cars in its 63year history. Most importantly, it’s the fastest road-legal Ferrari ever, and, yes, that includes the Enzo. It set a record lap time at the Fiorano test track of one minute and 24 seconds. According to Ferrari, it does zero-to-62 mph in about 3.3 seconds (a tick quicker than the Enzo’s 3.4 seconds) and claims a top speed of more than 209 mph (Enzo wins with 217 mph). The 599 GTO is derived from the track-only special edition 599XX but it’s definitely no badge-engineered softie. Ferrari’s intent was to bring street drivers a car than can handling and perform just shy of a pure track toy. The front mid-mounted V-12 puts out 671 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. If you’re keeping score at home, that’s 59 more ponies than the 599 GTB.

The gearbox features shorter gear ratios and upshifts calibrated to match the 60 milliseconds of the 599XX. It is also 220 pounds lighter than a 599 GTB. One of the most significant innovations on the 599 GTO is the chassis set-up, which allows the driver more leeway in approaching the handling limit and features better responsiveness with more direct steering. Priced at around $400,000, all 599 cars are sold; like we said, it’s special. Hennessey Venom GT

he Venom GT may bear some outward resemblance to a Lotus Elise, albeit on steroids, but don’t let that fool you. It may not look like the hulking mega-horsepower muscle cars that one expects to see rumble out the doors of Hennessey Performance Engineering’s Texas garage, but this Brit-built car still identifies with heavyweight boxing gloves rather than string-back driving gloves. Only the windshield, doors, roof, floor, dash, and various trim pieces are carried over from the Elise. Hennessey cites the cost factor, in time and dollars, of reinventing parts that contribute little if anything to its performance. The biggest savings came from using the Lotus cockpit structure, which has already been certified and crash tested. The money spent went to an all-new frame, suspension, and an aerodynamic carbon-fiber body to cover it all. The Hennessy Venom GT is noticeably larger— nearly three-feet longer and almost sixinches wider. Aerodynamic enhancements include a front splitter and lower rear diffuser panel to create road-hugging downforce. The adjustable rear wing can generate almost 1,500 pounds of downforce at 150 mph, keeping the car’s rear end firmly planted. Even more impressive than the carbon-fiber bodywork is what lies beneath it. The wheelbase has been stretched nearly 20 inches for better balance and to accommodate the twin-turbo V-8. A new suspension incorporates an increase in track width at almost seven inches up front and six inches in the rear. Brembo brakes with six-piston calipers and 15-inch carbon

ceramic rotors reside at all four corners. Engine choices include a base 725 hp supercharged LS9 V-8 and 1,000- and 1,200 hp twin turbocharged variants. Venom GT serial #01 rolled out with a twin-turbocharged LS-series Chevrolet V-8 sitting amidship and pumping out 1,200 hp and 1,155 lb-ft of torque. A Ricardo sixspeed manual transaxle (as used in the Ford GT) put the power to the rear wheels. Weighing 2,685 pounds and with a powerto-weight ratio of 2.4 pounds per horsepower, the first Venom GT hit 62 mph from a standstill in less than 2.7 seconds. Hennessey says it can streak past 187 mph in 14.9 seconds, on its way to an estimated speed of 275 mph. The Venom GT is manufactured in Silverstone, England, with engines supplied by HPE’s Texas headquarters. Prices start at $725,000. Only ten vehicles will be produced annually.

The car’s new front end may look familiar because it is similar to the Jaguar C-XF concept that spawned the original XF. It is also more in step with the flagship XJ. lmost 20 years since its last supercar, Jaguar has confirmed plans for a new hightech flagship that will compete directly with the new batch of hybrid exotics, specifically the upcoming Porsche 918 Spyder and Mercedes SLS E-Cell. The C-X75 will become the make’s first supercar since the XJ220, and the British brand’s most advanced model ever. The purpose of the Jaguar XJ220 of the 1990s was to move the marque into the last decade of the millennium with something state-of-the-art. In 1992, it accomplished its goal and seized the title of the world’s fastest production car from the Lamborghini Diablo and Bugatti EB110 with a top speed of 217 mph. Although the C-X75 will not compete for speed supremacy, it will elevate the brand to the top of the supercar arena. The production C-X75 will feature the same sexy sheetmetal that made the concept so desirable. The concept uti-

lized four 195-hp electric motors, one at each wheel for four-wheel-drive propulsion. Two micro-turbines extended the car's 68-mile range to 560 miles. Although jet-like turbines would certainly solidify the C-X75’s place as an ultramodern supercar, these types of devices have never been integrated into a production automobile. Due to very high exhaust temperatures, turbines have yet to prove themselves as a viable alternative to the internal combustion engine. Therefore, Jaguar is going to implement a more stable hybrid powertrain. The production car will use a highly boosted 1.6-liter fourcylinder engine supplemented by one electric motor at each axle. The C-X75 (it will be renamed before production) will have an all-electric range of 30 miles. The gasoline motor will extend that range by another 270 miles. Calling forth all the power from both the combustion engine and electric motors, the Jaguar C-X75 will instantly transform

Jaguar did not specify how much power the C-X75 will create, but we believe it will be close to the concept’s 800 hp and 1,000-plus lb-ft of torque. With a carbon-fiber F1-inspired chassis from a partnership with Williams F1, weight should remain below 3,000 pounds. Jaguar claims the C-X75 will run zero-to-60 mph in less than three seconds, 0–100 mph in less than six seconds, and on to a top speed in excess of 200 mph. Only 250 examples will be built, each costing approximately $1.150 million. Jaguar will begin taking orders after it announces the car’s official specifications in September. The XJ220 left the factory with heavy modifications due to emissions standards that resulted in order cancellations, lawsuits, and unsold cars. We hope that is one road that the CX75 doesn’t follow the XJ220 down.

Koenigsegg Agera R

he Agera R is a more environmentally friendly and powerful version of the base Agera. Using the beneficial qualities of E85 biofuel, including a higher octane rating and cooling abilities, the engine can run with higher compression, boost pressure, and more spark advance compared to the normal engine. The result is a Veryon SuperSport-comparable 1,100 hp from its new in-house 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. The engine is connected to a newly developed seven-speed gearbox and makes use of one of the lightest and fastest differentials on the market. The aerodynamics of the Agera are top notch. Even with the massive rear wing in place, the coefficient of drag is 0.33 in high-speed mode and 0.37 in track mode. The dynamic rear wing will alter its position not only because of the car’s speed, but also depending on pressure of the wind. It can thus compensate for headwind or tailwind at the same given speed. Koenigsegg says the Agera R has a “theoretical” top speed of around 273 mph because of the car’s gear ratios, aerodynamics, and power. All Agera models are limited to 230 mph in standard mode, but the governor can be unlocked if all necessary conditions are met (tire wear, service level of car, etc.) in the infotainment system. A large 21-gallon fuel tank is centrally located into the carbon-fiber monocoque chassis to help the Agera pass the U.S. high-speed rear impact test. So yes, the

Agera–unlike the CCX–will be marketed and sold inside the United States without any special alterations or show-car licenses. Another benefit of the fuel tank’s position is that the weight distribution of the Agera does not change if the tank is full or close to empty. Like the stowable top on the Acura NSXT, the Agera will easily convert from opentop roadster to closed coupe mid-trip while still being able to handle a set of golf clubs.

Lexus LFA oyota’s luxury division, Lexus, has built its reputation and sales success with vehicles that are so accommodating to their drivers that some models literally park themselves. But for drivers who take pleasure in driving themselves, such as exotic-car owners and collectors, this sort of coddling and technological intrusion has left the impression that Lexus vehicles lack passion and emotional appeal. Lexus’s response to those critics is the high-pitched, 9,000-rpm shriek of a 552hp V-10 mounted in a carbon-fiber-bodied sports car that looks like the spawn of a stealth fighter and a Lamborghini. Referred to during its decade-long gestation period as the LF-A, the ready for primetime production version loses the hyphen to become simply the LFA. The LFA was completely re-engineered well past the midway point of its development to switch from an aluminum frame to a carbon-fiber tub to improve its powerto-weight ratio. The carbon-fiber-rein-

forced plastic (CFRP) chassis and body of the LFA is not only 220 pounds lighter, but provides increased strength and rigidity. The V-10 engines, hand assembled in conjunction with Yamaha, also relied on that company’s musical instrument division to literally tune the exhaust system for performance and exciting acoustics. Lotus Evora S n 2011, the Evora was the least extreme and most user friendly Lotus that you could buy in America. Now, it is the only Lotus you can buy in America. With the quick and nimble Exige and Elise being axed due to safety regulations, Lotus will only have one car in the showroom. Albeit, it will offer that one car in three different flavors. There is the standard 276-hp base Evora and the sportier 345-hp Evora S. Both cars come standard with a sixspeed manual transmission. An automatic option, dubbed Intelligent Precision Shift or IPS, is available with the standard engine but adds a couple of tenths of a second to the performance numbers. Besides being slightly quicker to 60 mph from a standstill, the Evora S also offers a Sport button for heightened throttle responses, higher stability-control intervention levels, and a throatier exhaust sound. In all, the Evora will have to singlehandedly compete on its own until the Lotus Esprit reappears in 2013 as a 2014 model.

The European GranTurismo MC Stradale will lose more than the last part of its name— to become just the GranTurismo MC—in its voyage overseas. It will also lose some of its track aspects. But Maserati is betting that’s what Americans want. The MC Stradale plays towards weekend racing. That car forgoes its backseat and adjustable front chairs to cut 220 pounds. It also replaces its six-speed automatic transmission for a slightly harsher but faster shifting six-speed sequential manual gearbox. The American version will not go to such extreme measures in order to preserve its more luxurious credentials. What will make it stateside is a Ferrari-derived 4.7-liter V-8 that produces a stout 444 hp, 39 more than the base car. The MC will also retain the Stradale’s new assertive styling. Best of all, new tighter damper settings offer more predictive and progressive handling without sacrificing everyday drivability.

The GranTurismo Convertible Sport will offer a more powerful, responsive, and efficient engine, a faster transmission, and a revised suspension. Think of it as a convertible version of the GranTurismo MC but without the nifty aerodynamic body aids. The more fuel-efficient 4.7-liter V-8 makes a jump in power thanks to Maserati's Friction Reduction Program. ueled by what McLaren has learned on the Formula One circuit, the MP4-12C will be the fourth road car to carry the McLaren name–behind the one-off M6 GT in 1968, the infamous million-dollar F1 supercar in 1998, and the Mercedes-Benzbuilt SLR in the early 2000s–but the first designed and built entirely in-house. It will lead a three-model range as McLaren ventures out with its own line of exotic offerings to attract buyers from Lamborghini and Ferrari. The British car company hopes to sway interest from the Italians with its own notoriety and with performance numbers that will surpass that of its competitors. To accomplish the second part, McLaren

started with an extremely lightweight and incredibly strong carbon tub that wraps around and protects the passengers. The McLaren-built V-8 engine utilizes a pair of turbochargers to lay down more power than its F1 rival’s 458 Italia. McLaren says the MP4-12C can accelerate zero-to-60 mph in less than three seconds and on to 124 mph in less than 10 seconds. These impressive numbers will give any manufacturer shivers. A fast-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch transmission transfers that horsepower to the rear wheels. A Proactive Chassis Control system allows the owner to dial-in suspension tuning to one of three settings: Normal, Sport, and Track. A McLaren-developed Brake Steer function decelerates cer-

tain wheels—like the inside rear wheel in corners—to help reduce understeer and increase the car’s overall handling prowess. To give you an idea of how well all these technologies work together, the MP4-12C currently holds the second best lap time on the Top Gear test track. This puts it ahead of the best from Ferrari and Lamborghini and even the Veyron SS. It only lags behind the Ariel Atom V-8, which is more track toy than production car. In all, the new MP4-12C has the name, styling, and specs to put fear in the hearts of some well-known Italian brands by selling well. That’s good because McLaren has high hopes to sell 1,000 cars annually as it rapidly establishes a dealer network.

Mercedes-Benz AMG ounded in 1967, AMG started making a name for itself in racing in the early 70s. Always partial to Mercedes-Benz, it slowly grew throughout the 70s and 80s in the aftermarkettuning arena. The turning point for the company was when Mercedes-Benz and AMG came to an agreement to offer AMG products via Mercedes-Benz showrooms in 1990. It took another few years for the agreement to have any impact on the U.S. retail marketplace. Between 1998–1999, Mercedes-Benz’s stake in AMG grew and that’s when AMG’s products started to fully infiltrate the Mercedes-Benz lineup, offering a number of high-horsepower packages on the already well-built German cars. The main point of interest in any AMG product may be its powerful hand-built engine, but the in-house tuner has gone to great lengths recently to increase

the performance at every level. It broke ground when it widened the front and rear tracks of the 2008 C63 AMG, making room for a massive V-8 engine and, more importantly, helping the C-Class Mercedes keep up with its German competitors in anything other than a straight-line. Today, AMG has shifted from all-out performance to environmental concerns. Its new batch of 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engines make more power while conserving more fuel and emitting less toxins than the large 6.3-liter V-8 it replaces in many of the nowawkwardly labeled 63s. Of course, the pride and enjoy of the offshoot brand is the massive 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-12 that is as powerful as it is smooth and comes with its own distinct mechanical buzz like no other large displacement V-8 or Italian exotic.

C63 AMG Coupe Black Series To compete with the BMW M3 Coupe, Mercedes has added the C63 Coupe for 2012. Like the sedan, the C-Class AMG Coupe offers the old 6.3-liter V-8 engine that is good for 481 hp with the AMG Performance Package. The C63 Coupe also features the sedan’s wider tracks at both the front and rear for better handling prowess. A select few will opt for the extreme Black Series model. Output is up to 510 hp; front and rear tracks stretch a further 1.57 inches and 3.11 inches, respectively; an adjustable coilover suspension is in place; larger rotors increase braking performance; and, unless optionally ordered, it forgoes its backseat to reduce weight.

E63 AMG

The E63 AMG will carry the more powerful and efficient 5.5-liter V-8 twin-turbo engine for the 2012 model year. The smaller engine creates the same 518 hp as the outgoing naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V-8; however, torque is up considerably and opting for the AMG Performance Package increases power all around. Despite creating more power, the engine and other small tweaks have reduced the E63’s fuel consumption by 22 percent. The 2.2-inch wider front track and electronically controlled damping system from the 2011 model carries over. In-a-rush soccer moms will appreciate the new E63 Wagon. 102

Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS63 AMG With the optional performance package, the 5.5-liter twinturbocharged V-8 in the 2012 CLS63 churns out 557 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. That’s an increase of 50 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque compared to the 2010 model’s 6.3-liter V-8. Best part: it does it with less fuel partly due to a new automatic engine stop/start function. To keep weight down, the CLS63 AMG is fitted with a hood, trunk lid, doors, and other major parts made from aluminum. All of these changes help it conserve 26 percent more fuel. For even more go, the width of the front axle is nearly one-inch wider in the CLS63 model for better handling.

S63 / S65 AMG It’s hard to find fault in Mercedes’s top-of-the-line AMGenhanced luxury barge. It holds a near perfect balance on most levels, offering a well-appointed and comfortable cabin with enough electronic gadgetry to hold the attention of a tween and sporty DNA to keep the enthusiast in all of us amused. Our favorite part is its sporty DNA, which was enhanced by a new twin-turbo V-8 in 2011. It creates more power and can even outgun the more expensive S600 when equipped with the AMG Performance Package. To top it all off, it’s 25 percent more efficient compared to the 6.3-liter V-8 it replaces. For those that want the only the best, the S65 ups the bragging rights at nearly every level.

CL63 / CL65 AMG The V-12-powered CL65 AMG enters the new year with even more power and a revised look. Reworked turbocharger tubing adds 17 more hp for a total of 621. The maximum torque of 738 lb-ft. has actually been electronically limited from a possible 885 lb-ft due to powertrain restraints. The performance is exceptional: accelerating zero-to-60 mph in 4.3 seconds and hitting an electronically limited top speed of 186 mph. Mercedes-Benz AMG SLK55 AMG The SLK55 AMG will live on with the redesigned SLK for 2012. Where the outgoing SLK shares a resemblance with the SLR McLaren, the 2012 SLK has a strong visual link with the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG supercar, including wide grille with a centrally positioned star. The SLK55 gets a naturally aspirated version of the lineup’s new twin-turbo V-8. Mercedes-Benz quietly discontinued the V12-powered SL for the 2012 model year as it prepares a new SL for 2013.The next generation SL63 should drop the 6.3-liter V-8 for the 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8. Equipped with the AMG Performance Package in the S63, it produces 563 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. That’s more than the SL600 and only a few bragginghorsepower away from the SL65. To top it all off, the 5.5-liter V-8 is 25 percent more efficient than the 6.3-liter V-8 it replaces. Although not officially announced, the ML63 is expected to be released with the new redesigned M-Class for 2012. It will carry the AMG-modified SUV torch until a replacement for the G55 (which got the axe for 2012) is released. We anticipate that its 6.3-liter V-8 will be replaced with the more eco-friendly and powerful 5.5-liter twinturbo V-8. It should produce similar horsepower—a little more than 500—but loads more torque. It will need the extra oomph to compete with the two powerful BMW Maltered SUVs and the new lighter Porsche Cayenne. Mercedes-Benz SLS t’s is no big secret that MercedesBenz has been working on a convertible version of the SLS Gullwing. In fact, the first unit for North America was sold to one of the owners of duPont REGISTRY at the Boca Raton Concours d' Elegance (it went under the hammer alongside the first R8 GT and a certain Ferrari). The first 2012 SLS AMG Roadster will land stateside in fall 2011. The SLS AMG Roadster comes with a soft-top convertible mechanism. To cut the top off, Mercedes-Benz had to spend some extra time reinforcing the car’s structure and tweaking its handling. Additional support structures will add to the vehicle’s weight (90 or so pounds) but allow the top to be opened or closed at speed, specifically at speeds up to 31 mph. There is no latch to unlock as the opening/closing process is fully automatic and takes only eleven seconds. The soft top will be available in three colors—black, red, and beige—and, surprisingly, won’t eat into the car’s trunk space. Through no fault of Mercedes and despite paying homage to the original 300 SL of the 1950s, some may not be fond of the new SLS without its trademark gullwing doors. Still, there is no denying that the Roadster is well proportioned. The SLS AMG Roadster features the same long hood, rear-positioned cabin, small rear deck, wide track, and short overhangs that make the SLS Gullwing coupe so appealing. Also like the coupe, the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster features an aluminum space frame, 6.3-liter V-8 developing 563 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque, seven-speed dualclutch transmission, and sports suspension. New for both in 2012 is an optional adaptive suspension. The electronically controlled

dampers in the suspension function in one of three modes: "Comfort," "Sport," and "Sport plus." Like many new exotics, the SLS features an interior inspired by aviation. The dashboard is in the shape of a wing, the air vents are cruciform nozzles reminiscent of jet engines, and the shifter is in the shape of an aircraft's thrust control. For the 2012 SLS Gullwing and 2012 SLS Roadster, the center console’s control unit can be equipped with a new AMG Performance Media. It not only allows the driver to adjust the optional Adaptive AMG Sport Suspension, but also gain access to numerous metrics such as engine output; 0–60, quarter mile, and lap times; and lateral and linear acceleration. Optional on all new convertibles and standard on the SLS Roadster is Mercedes-Benz’s exclusive Airscarf system, which warms the head and neck areas of the occupants for top-down motoring in cooler climates. A new color, Sepang Brown Metallic, and 10-spoke wheels painted in matte black with a high-sheen rim flange will premiere with the 2012 SLS Roadster and be available on the coupe.

With its launch control issues reconciled, the GT-R can muster 0-to-60-mph sprints in 3.0 seconds flat and will top out at 196 mph. Aerodynamics have also been tweaked resulting in a coefficient of drag of 0.26, down from 0.27, with a 10 percent increase in downforce. These changes help raise fuel economy by one mpg in the city and two mpg on the highway. For 2012, a special Black Edition car is also available.

agani's latest hyper-exotic sports car is named after the wind god Huayra Tata, whom, according to ancient legend, lives high in the Andes. It might be difficult to pronounce, but it's easy to understand the analogy, because the car will blow past most other exotic cars thanks to a 700-hp V-12 tucked into its under-3,000-pound body. What makes the Huayra truly live up to its name is how its swoopy silhouette functions like an airplane wing, not only to easily slip through the air, but also to put the airflow to work. For instance, during braking, the rear flaps rise along with the front suspension to counteract weight

transfer forward, providing better balance between the front and rear axles, thus allowing the rear brakes to handle more of the stopping force. Beneath all the windinspired bodywork lies a new carbon-titanium monocoque chassis to keep the passengers safe. Inside, the Huayra blends classic features such as an aluminum gear lever as well as a dashboard and central console with state-of-the-art technology in the form of a central touchscreen multiple-function display. engine. The 6.0-liter V-12 pumps out 700hp along with a thumping 738 lb-ft of torque. Expect 60 mph to arrive from a standstill in around three seconds. The sophisticated aerodynamics should also provide the assistance necessary to reach a top speed of around 230 mph. To save weight, Pagani ruled out a dualclutch gearbox in favor of a seven-speed transverse-mounted sequential unit with a dual clutch that weighs slightly over 200 pounds. Altogether, Pagani’s efforts keep weight down to less than 3,200 pounds. Like its namesake, the Huayra should be the new “king of the hill” among exotic sports cars. The idea led to a friendship with Pininfarina. Working under the direction and guidance of Pininfarina and suppliers in Italy, it assembled a showroom, customer lounge and sales offices that are as modern and sophisticated as the latest Italian supercar, and in some cases, as exotic and rare. For example, the ceiling had to be a certain white wavy gauge of thin metal, the baseboards stainless steel to hold in the glass that form the walls of the building, and the floors required a proper charcoal gray hue that could only be obtained from Italy. Even the cappuccino maker is the same red as the Pininfarina chairs.

By shedding 121 pounds through thorough weight-saving efforts, the Cayman R weighs a mere 2,855 pounds. Of course, that also means no A/C unit or radio and nylon door pulls to replace the ordinary han-

dles. To complement the Cayman’s lighter weight, a new exhaust system raises output 10 hp for a new total yield of 330 hp. To set the Cayman apart visually, the car sits 0.79 of an inch closer to the ground compared to the Cayman S and now wears a fixed rear spoiler. It also features small highlights like black-framed headlights, black exterior mirrors, and "Porsche" lettering on both sides.

Porsche Boxster Spyder

t’s the lightest Porsche currently available. Even lighter than the new Cayman R. Like the Cayman R, the reduction in weight is no accident. The Boxster Spyder has undergone extreme measures to make it a miniscule 2,811 pounds. For reference, that’s 200 pounds less than a Lotus Evora. How? The radio and A/C become optional and the automatic folding top is replaced with a manually installed frail unit that Porsche admits won’t survive a drive-thru car wash. The list goes on with an aluminum rear deck that replaces the steel trunk. If you are more

obsessed with weight than a member of Weight Watchers, the $1,700 lithium-ion battery option shaves off a further 22 pounds. In total, 176 pounds have been shed without resorting to a new gym regiment for the buyer. The outcome is a back-tobasics sports car that may just be the best handling street Porsche available. The suspension has been lowered and stiffened and the engine now makes a Cayman Sequaling 320 hp. To get a whole lot less of the Porsche Boxster (except for horsepower), it is going to cost you $3,200 more.

Porsche Panamera Turbo S ushing the limits of physics with an even higher level of sport in Porsche’s already sporty four door is the Panamera Turbo S. It adds an additional 50 hp for 550 hp and, with Sport Chrono Package on the PDK transmission engaged, raises torque output to a whopping 590 lb-ft. The 10-plus percent increase in power comes courtesy of a modified engine control unit and new twin turbochargers with titanium-aluminum turbines that are lighter and thus more responsive. With Launch Control set, the newest Panamera can reach 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and a top track speed of 190 mph. Despite the increase in power, fuel consumption in the Panamera Turbo S is expected to remain comparable to the Panamera Turbo. It stands out visually thanks to its 20inch wheels, side skirts from the Porsche Exclusive range, and Turbo S badges. Aside from these small modifications, at a quick glance, it is hard to differentiate the Turbo S from the Turbo, or even the base Panamera for that matter.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo t’s hard to argue against less weight in automobiles (as well as most humans). So when the 2011 Porsche Cayenne debuted with 440 less pounds to move, we had no doubts that it would feature better performance, agility, handling, fuel economy, and emissions. What’s almost unnatural is that the new Cayenne is actually larger than its predecessor. It’s wheelbase is 1.6 inches longer and the whole SUV grew by nearly 1.9 inches. Those extra inches increase the interior dimensions but the taut design of the exterior gives the car a much smaller look. The drop in weight wasn’t magic (well, maybe a little Porsche engineering magic), but actually in large part thanks to aluminum for the hood, door, front fenders, suspension, and chassis, and the adoption of the Panamera’s less-serious four-wheel-drive system. That system sends 90 percent of the Turbo’s 500 ponies to the rear wheels ordinarily but has the ability to divert up to 100 percent to the front wheels if traction dictates.

redesigned seventh-generation 911 will appear in 2012. Code named the 991, it will premiere in 911 C2 and C2S forms, while the 997 Turbo, C4, C4S, GTS, Black Edition, and 918 Spyder Edition variants continue in their current form for at least one more year. We anticipate that the 991 will be available with all-wheel drive in 2013, Turbo and GT3 trims by 2014, and in GT2 guise by 2015. Some will mutter that the 2012 911 hasn’t changed enough, but most will expect nothing less. Although its iconic shadow remains, big changes reside within. The new 991’s wheelbase stretches out a further 3.9 inches compared to the 997, but overall length has only grown by two inches. This means that the front and rear overhangs have been shortened, and the engine sits more mid than rear compared to its predecessor. Rear legroom has also increased and the A-pillar and windshield have been pushed forward and thus have a stronger rake. Despite being bigger, the 991 weighs less than the 997 due to extensive use of aluminum. Not only does the new 991 weigh less, engine changes produce more power, reduce fuel consumption, and help lower

emissions by 16 percent. The increase in efficiency comes from a host of new technologies including an automatic start-stop function, electrical system recuperation, new electro-mechanical power steering, and the world’s first seven-speed (yes, that is a seven) manual transmission. The engine in the base 911 Carrera shrinks in size from 3.6 to 3.4 liters but power is up five for an even 350 hp. The 3.8-liter engine’s reworked internals in the S model help it produce 15 more horse for a total of 400 hp. It only requires only 4.1 seconds with the normal PDK transmission and 3.9 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package to reach 60 from a stop. The new 911 features increased agility thanks to its wider front track and a reworked rear suspension. Porsche says steering feedback won’t be affected by the new electric steering but every Porschephile in the room should be worried that its nearly telepathic handling has been altered. Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), which first appeared on the 2011 Cayenne, helps reduce roll when cornering and keep the tires planted. The first new 911 models will arrive in February of 2012.

Porsche 918 Spyder re you a tree or curve hugger? Porsche engineers think you can be both, and they come together in the form of the Porsche 918 Spyder. It is the two-seat mid-engine Spyder that should make exotic car types as well as the eco-poseurs in egg-shaped runabouts turn green—the latter with envy. This plug-in hybrid sports car is powered by a 500-hp V8 along with a pair of electric motors that contribute another 218 hp, and driving both the front and rear axles. Together, they can launch the 918 Spyder from a standstill to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds while delivering up to 78 miles per gallon. Top speed is 198 miles per hour. For the ultimate high-performance treeembracing experience, Porsche drivers flogged the 918 Spyder around the Nordschleife—the notorious 12.9-mile “Green Hell” section of the Nurburgring race circuit that swoops, dives, and twists

through the forests of the Eifel Mountains— in less than seven and a half minutes per lap. Those lap times are better than those of the limited-production Porsche Carrera GT. Like that vehicle, the 918 Spyder is a rolling showcase of Porsche’s knowledge and capabilities. The V-8 internal combustion engine derives from the 3.4-liter power plant of the victorious RS Spyder racecar and can rev to 9,200 rpm. The electric motors draw power from a fluid-cooled lithium-ion battery that is primarily charged by plugging-in to the power grid. Recharging also occurs when the brakes are applied and the kinetic energy produced is regenerated into electricity. A button on the steering wheel allows the driver to choose from four driving modes, including E-Drive for total electric power up to a 16-mile range, Hybrid for efficient everyday dual-mode driving, SportHybrid, a full-on Race Hybrid. Adding to the

fun is a push-to-pass button (E-Boost) that supplies an extra jolt of electric power for overtaking. The carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic body is not only lightweight (the 918 weighs only 3,285 pounds), but also extremely rigid thanks to its racing roots. The exterior styling pays homage to the 917 LeMans racers while blending in the aerodynamics of the current RS Spyder. The streamlined headrest fairings behind the cockpit house retractable intakes for the engine. Inside are contoured bucket seats, a multi-function steering wheel, a floating center console with touch sensitive controls, and a trio of free-standing circular dials supply readouts of road speed, engine speed, and energy management. A Range Manager display maps out driving range based on power mode and shows the nearest refueling sources.

The 918 Spyder oﬀers an electric mode with a 16-mile range, hybrid mode capable of 78 mpg, and a sport mode with a full 600-plus combined hp.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe ith its premiere, Rolls-Royce heralded the Phantom Coupe as the brand’s sportiest model. Four years later, the faster and more powerful Ghost has dethroned it. However, that doesn’t make the Phantom Coupe any less special. It uses an all-aluminum space frame and aluminum body panels for rigidity and to keep weight down. The steel hood hides a 6.75-liter V-12 engine churning out 453 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque. Speed builds effortlessly and, even at 100 mph, the Coupe is only using 10 percent its engine’s resources. The Coupe is also the only Phantom that comes with a Sport button, which lowers the car, improves

throttle response, and tells the transmission to hold gears and start in first gear. Of the three Phantoms, and despite stretching 18 feet, the Coupe does the best job of concealing its size and providing a driver-oriented ride. Rolls-Royce Ghost EWB

Despite being more than 10 inches shorter than the Phantom sedan, the Ghost EWB oﬀers equal if not better room for four.

he Rolls-Royce Ghost may have officially lost its “baby Rolls” nickname with the introduction of the Ghost Extended Wheelbase (EWB) model. The Rolls-Royce Ghost EWB combines the heightened driving dynamics offered by RollsRoyce’s sportiest model with the extra rear space this class of cars can demand. With this model addition, Rolls-Royce is confirming the Ghost’s dual roles as both a car to be chauffeured in and get behind the wheel of. The car’s wheelbase has been extended by seven inches, providing increased rear cabin space. Rolls-Royce says the Ghost Extended Wheelbase more than doubles the amount of knee room and significantly increases total legroom. Even more charming is that Rolls-Royce was able to accomplish the more accommodative interior without sacrificing the car’s current proportions and design. Carrying over is the 6.6-liter V-12 engine with twin turbochargers producing 563 hp and 575 lb-ft of torque. Rolls-Royce quotes a zero-to-60-mph time of 5.0 seconds, 0.3 seconds slower than the normal Ghost, which confirms our suspi-

cions that the car has packed on at least a couple hundred pounds. Nonetheless, we are confident that the car’s air suspension will help conceal those extra pounds with its well-balanced ride and handling. Based on the outgoing SLK55 AMG, the Helvetic Hidalgo retains all the car’s drivetrain components but adds a body reminiscent of the 1936 Bugatti 57S Atlantic or 1938 Talbot Lago. Mastretta MXT The MXT is a two-seat mid-engine sports car from virgin Mexican manufacturer Mastretta. Its small size, lightweight design, and low asking price would make it a perfect competitor for the Lotus twins if they were still in production. Its body and chassis comprises mostly fiber-reinforced plastic and aluminum and helps keep weight down to near 2,000 pounds. It also helps it pull an outstanding 1.1g of lateral acceleration.
