That victory sealed something even greater: motorsport’s elusive Triple Crown — the Indianapolis 500 (1974), the Monaco Grand Prix (1984), and the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1995). No other team had ever achieved it. Now, 30 years later, McLaren returns — not just to relive history, but to rewrite it again. The goal: a second Triple Crown, won not over decades, but within a single, daring year. And this time, it’s not only McLaren’s factory drivers who will chase greatness. With just 50 cars being built, the 750S Le Mans is set to be one of the most sought-after McLaren series production supercars. The McLaren 750S Le Mans pays homage to the iconic #59 F1 GTR with matching Le Mans Grey exterior paint – with the option of McLaren Orange also available - roof scoop and 5-spoke LM wheels. It will also feature the new MSO High Downforce Kit (HDK), which adds visual drama to the 750S with a raised carbon fibre Active Rear Spoiler with integral endplates. In conjunction with a front bumper featuring an enlarged carbon fibre splitter and rear wing, downforce is increased by 10 percent compared to the standard 750S, enhancing track performance and echoing the famous McLaren F1 LM edition’s aerodynamic additions. Completing the HDK package is a new body-colored carbon fibre under-wing panel featuring gloss black louvres. McLaren 750S Le Mans customers will also have a choice of Carbon Black with Dove Grey or Carbon Black with McLaren Orange interior color combinations with Le Mans branding and a dedication plaque. Purchasers of the Le Mans edition cars will benefit from the multi-award winning, benchmark-beating 750S performance delivered by the mid-mounted, 750bhp, 4.0-liter, twinturbocharged V8 McLaren engine. A motorsport-inspired carbon fibre Monocage II central structure and Proactive Chassis Control III suspension system help to ensure that the 750S is the lightest and most agile car in its class, now enhanced by the HDK aerodynamic additions. DRIVING A WEDGE Bringing the beloved wedge-shaped silhouette back, this bespoke, one-off Peralta S is a stunning supercar that makes its U.S. debut at Monterey Car Week.
The 1970s and ’80s were a distinct time in automotive history, and being the decades in which some of the first supercars emerged, it was a time that defined a genre that has been pushed significantly forward since. Despite the exotic hypercars of today boasting ultra-luxurious features, cuttingedge innovation, and striking design, many automotive enthusiasts and car collectors still have passionate nostalgia for retro supercars, and rightfully so. Whether it be for their brawny powertrains or purist rearwheel drive and manual transmissions, old-school supercars have undeniably timeless appeal, but one of the most distinct aspects of their appeal is the ubiquitous prevalence of a monolithic, wedge-shaped silhouette throughout the industry. One of the designers who is most known for penning vehicles with the ultra-simplistic wedge shape is Giorgetto Giugiaro, having penned iconic masterpieces like the Lotus Esprit, BMW M1, Maserati Merak, DeLorean DMC-12, and more. However, the Maserati Boomerang, a bold, striking concept supercar from the early ’70s, served as the inspiration for an incredible new one-off that is set to make its United States debut at Monterey Motorsports Festival. That one-off is the Peralta S, a bespoke masterpiece that was designed by Fabrizio Giugiaro, Giorgetto’s son, within their GFG Style design firm. It’s named after its owner, Mexican car collector Carlos Peralta, and it was commissioned by him and his two sons, Juan Carlos and Nicolas, making the Peralta S a family affair both in its design and its commissioning. Based on the Maserati MC20, the performance characteristics of the modern supercar, like its racingderived engineering, rear-wheel drive, and its 621-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbo Nettuno V6 engine, remain unchanged.

But the body and design of the Peralta S is clearly inspired by that wonderful Boomerang of 1972. It unabashedly takes on a classic Giugiaro wedge shape, with a mirror-polished aluminum exterior that evokes an ultra-futuristic science fiction spaceship fantasy from the 1970s or ’80s. The only parts of the exterior that aren’t aluminum are the carbon fiber front splitter, rear diffuser, and side sills. An active rear wing provides downforce at speed, along with active side vents that open while the car is in action, while the wing remains retracted when the vehicle is inactive, and the vents are closed as well. These characteristics give the Peralta S two distinct looks, one more aggressive for speed, and the other dormant and uninterrupted, maximizing the monolithic, avant-garde aesthetic that Giugiaro’s wedgeshaped performance cars are known and celebrated for, especially the Bora-based Boomerang that inspired the Peralta S. Rather than doors, the Peralta S features a lifting canopy that moves up and forward for both visual drama and easier ingress and egress, similar to the iconic Maserati Birdcage 75th concept of 20 years ago. The interior features leather upholstery with a similar chrome effect to the exterior, and the design of the car throughout is a masterclass in combining retro appeal with modern innovation and automotive excellence. The Peralta S made its world debut in Mexico in March at one of the country’s most prestigious automotive events, the Pastejé Automotive Invitational. Now this stunning one-ofone is coming to the United States to take a bow at Car Week: it’s set to appear at the Monterey Motorsports Festival for its first American appearance, showcasing the incredible result of historically inspired design and amazing bespoke craftsmanship.

The car features an all-new J59 carbon ceramic brake system, developed with Alcon calipers – 10-piston front, six-piston rear – and 420-mm rotors, capable of delivering 1.9 Gs of braking force, as proven at the Nürburgring. A ZTK Performance Package adds a high-downforce Carbon Aero option, reducing top speed slightly to 225 mph, while improving circuit capability. Visually, the ZR1X appears closely related to the ZR1 (which starts at $175,000), but look deeper and you’ll find purposeful design tweaks like revised underbody strakes and subtle bodywork adjustments to support the AWD setup. The car weighs about 180 pounds more than the standard ZR1, thanks to the electrical systems. “The unique design features on the exterior aren’t there to just create the look,” said Vlad Kapitonov, Corvette’s advanced design manager. “They’re there to really contribute to the hypercar performance. No detail is frivolous.” Despite its performance credentials, the ZR1X won’t carry the seven-figure price tag of European hypercars. Exact pricing and production numbers haven’t been confirmed – expect far more units than any Bugatti or Pagani, but for a lot less cash (likely in the $250k region). Chevrolet’s ability to mass-produce cutting-edge performance while keeping the Corvette accessible, aspirational, and attainable is a key part of its strategy. With over 160,000 C8 Corvettes sold, the demand is clearly there. So, is the ZR1X really a hypercar? It’s certainly hypercarfast. And with Ferrari’s SF90 Stradale, the Rimac Nevera, and the McLaren W1 all pushing hybrid or electric tech into this new stratosphere, the ZR1X makes a strong case as America’s hypercar-adjacent icon. Whether you call it a supercar with hypercar stats, or an accessible apex predator, one thing is clear: the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X is a landmark achievement in American performance engineering, and it’s about to change the game.

Chevrolet is aiming squarely at the elite with its most powerful Corvette ever – the all-wheel-drive, 1,250-horsepower ZR1X. Building on decades of performance legacy, the new ZR1X isn’t just pushing the boundaries of the iconic American sports car, it’s resetting them. And in doing so, it’s challenging the very definition of what defines a hypercar. The 2025 Corvette ZR1, already a monster with 1,064 hp, now looks like the warm-up act for 2026’s ZR1X, which features a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 engine powering the rear wheels and an electrified front axle that completes the all-wheel-drive system. According to Chevrolet, the ZR1X is capable of 0-60 mph in just 1.9 seconds, with a top speed of 233 mph. With those numbers, it rivals many of today’s multi-million-dollar hypercars from Bugatti, McLaren, and Koenigsegg. “America’s true hypercar has arrived,” declared Corvette’s marketing manager Megan Dally at its launch. “It’s the true hypercar level, where we’re blending in that LT7 engine with the electric all-wheel-drive technology to truly see what’s capable up at the top end… We’re putting the world on notice with this car, showing what Corvette and America’s true supercar is capable of.” In terms of engineering, the ZR1X pulls from both the ZR1 and the E-Ray, refining them into a car that balances extreme acceleration with driveability. It uses carbon fiber body components, an enhanced electric front motor, and a revised battery system with 26% more usable energy than the E-Ray. This boost helps deliver 186 hp at the front axle, increasing total output to 1,250 hp. “It brings learnings from the ZR1 and the E-Ray and combines them to create an unbelievable driving experience,” said Josh Holder, Corvette’s chief engineer. “The ZR1X brought an opportunity to develop performance in Corvette like we’ve never done.” From the chassis to the aerodynamics, everything is purpose-built for track performance. The ‘Qualifying’ mode unleashes full power for time attack laps, while ‘Pro’ mode in the Performance Traction Management system delivers maximum control under high G-forces. There’s even a pushto-pass button that unleashes all 1,250 horses on demand. “With a big horsepower number of 1,250, it nets massive performance,” said Cody Bulkley, chassis controls engineer. “You’re talking 1.3 Gs of longitudinal acceleration, throwing your whole body into the seat… This is performance like none other, and it is so sustainable, so easy to drive.”

When Mercedes and AMG decided to revamp the high-strung GT Coupe onto a shared platform with the SL-Class two-door, a serious question arose: would the GT soften up or the SL get sportier? Well, the SL definitely leans toward the firmer end of the grand touring spectrum, leaving the real answer to arrive from Maybach, which arguably built the very best SL variant possible by leaning further into the brand’s unique luxury ethos. Most importantly, the Maybach SL 680 commits to a dedicated two-seat layout rather than a 2+2 with vestigial perches that are barely useful for even small children, pets, or parcel storage behind the front row. This decision creates significantly more legroom up front for the driver and passenger, key to increasing perceived spaciousness given the long and low-slung driving position. Meanwhile, the seats, upholstery, and trim all introduce a new level of sumptuous leather finishing at most touchpoints – though a few trim pieces still stick with a surprising amount of piano black plastic that contrasts heavily with the launch spec’s Manufaktur Crystal White Nappa leather. Maybach boasts the new SL 680 slots into the lineup as its sportiest option, and that’s definitely true compared to enormous four-door sedans. But versus an AMG SL, this convertible delivers a far softer and smoother ride as befitting the interior enhancements.

The first cue that hints at extensive engineering revisions from Maybach are the wheels, which come in a quintessential Monoblock design or a multispoke, but still measure only a restrained 21 inches. This allows more tire sidewall to help the suspension absorb rougher roads, while softer springs, longer travel shock dampers, and active roll bars further absorb bumps while keeping the cockpit in utter serenity. Throw in buttery shifts from the nine-speed automatic transmission, and the twin-turbo V8’s 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque seem entirely manageable, emoting the calm capability of bulletproof German engineering. Dig deeper into the throttle in Sport mode, however, and this Maybach still leaps ahead with wellsprings of power from that familiar Bi-turbo engine. But a unique Maybach exhaust system also reduces NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) with additional fiberglass textiles in the mufflers, imparting a more sonorous and pleasurable tone rather than a barking roar. And extra sound insulation throughout the body means even hard pulls come in relative peace and quiet, despite the AMG roots still allowing for a 4.0-second sprint to 60 mph on the way to a top speed of 161 mph – not bad for a soft-top convertible. That top can drop in only 15 seconds at speeds up to 37 mph, and opening the roof to let in more sky while cruising in the luxurious

Maybach drive mode only further emphasizes the subtly softer steering, copious suspension damping, and less touchy throttle response of an opulent grand tourer. This is Maybach’s first convertible since the 2017 S 650 Cabriolet, and though based on immediately familiar shared DNA, its exterior form also changes noticeably. The front grille and intakes feature plenty of minute Maybach references, swooping upward to a hood that bows more gracefully, with additional chrome elements along the side and rear to match. At Maybach’s media drive program in Ibiza, every car arrived decked out in the Monogram Series launch spec’s choice between “White Ambience,” a two-tone Obsidian Black Metallic over Moonlight White Magno, or “Red Ambience” that features the same black and Garnet Red Metallic bodywork. An optional laser-engraved hood finishes off the package and matches fine anthracite patterning on the convertible top, though to some eyes, the extensive thematic elements may well go overboard in pure style terms. Of course, plenty of individualization options are available – including, critically, over 50 other paint colors already available through Manufaktur Exclusive, each of which was inspired by precious stones and minerals. So, for those buyers in search of a slightly less gaudy spec than the two standard Monogram Series colorways, to more aptly match the SL 680’s absolutely splendid character, rest assured Maybach understands. dupontregistry.com
Further customization will no doubt add to the anticipated price tag, which should extend well into the $200,000 range – considering the European starting sticker of €215,000 before taxes. Given the evolving tariff situation here in the United States, Maybach likely wants to hold off on committing to a price for as long as possible, though a representative confirmed that the first SL 680s will arrive to American dealers in the second half of 2025. As it stands, the Maybach will likely cost about double a base SL 43 AMG, and maybe 25% more than a V8-powered SL 63 AMG. The SL 63 E Performance and GT 63 Coupe should wind up slightly cheaper, but for the former, additional hybrid weight gains may eat into any advantages versus an internal-combustion SL, while the latter does away with much of the cruiser comforts. As much as Maybach fans may have been hoping to see an even larger and plusher two-door, more in line with concept cars over the years or aiming to compete more directly with Rolls-Royce and Bentley, the SL 680 Monogram Series instead arrives as the cherry on top of the Mercedes and AMG lineup – quite literally, when finished in Red Ambience. But where the sheer physics of shoehorning raw performance potential into the SL chassis resulted in somewhat compromised driving dynamics, the Maybach treatment introduces a newfound level of tranquility that results in the best open-topped version of this car on the market today.

The brutalist EXP 15 debuts on the brink of Bentley’s deferred entry into electrification. The blocky one-off departs from the brand’s curvaceous past, wearing a new design language that’s magisterial, rectilinear, and more menacing than we’re accustomed to seeing from the Winged B. As with many such efforts, the EXP 15 isn’t a literal representation of Bentley’s first pure EV anticipated to break cover in 2026. But it does signal a potential style direction for the 106-year-old carmaker and has managed to ruffle a few feathers in the process – as any good pot-stirrer should. Our preview at the automaker’s newly refreshed design HQs in Crewe revealed a rich backstory that explains Bentley’s shift away from sensuous concept cars like the low-slung EXP 100 GT. Unlike the smaller-than-a-Bentayga EV crossover set to debut in 2026, the EXP 15 is unapologetically huge – over five-feet tall and as lengthy as a Mulsanne. The silhouette is part estate (think puffed-up Audi RS6) and part fastback coupé (imagine a Rolls Spectre on growth hormones), intended to offer a grand touring experience by leveraging an all-electric drivetrain with four-wheel drive. Bentley attributes the proportions and layout to the legendary “Blue Train,” the 1930 Speed Six Gurney Nutting Sportsman that company chairman and good ol’ Bentley Boy Woolf Barnato famously drove to beat the train running from Cannes to London. The view of this hulking form in the flesh is more dramatic than you might expect, with an imposing stance and quite a bit more surfacing subtlety than the famously controversial Jaguar Type 00 concept internet pundits have been comparing it to.

This Bentley’s most challenging element is its massive maw, whose edifice-like presence is both stark and foreboding. Instead of the visual jewelry of a conventional grille, negative space is emphasized by a series of LED lights flanked by headlights consisting of four slim slits. While there’s some cleverness to the illuminated approach, this leading edge is too massive and overstated to be considered sexy (unless you’re into big, blunt objects). At least there’s a clever backlit Flying B beneath a flush cover boasting only the fourth redesign of the Bentley logo since its inception over a century ago. Things get more interesting as you move along the bonnet, which houses twin folding sections for fitted luggage which are secured by an old school leather strap. The roofline and c-pillar resolve in a sleeker form than the rather obtuse front end, and the haunches offer the relief of muscular, flared shape that defies the rest of the body’s linearity. The EXP 15’s interior is a more inviting, playful place than its strait-laced exterior. The layout echoes the Blue Train’s and features a single front driver’s seat with two rear seats, one of which can slide forward and pivot sideways for easy ingress and egress. A novel dashboard display dubbed ‘Mechanical Marvel’ incorporates moving physical fingers that articulate to animate anything from GPS direction to the battery’s state of charge. Design director Robin Page suggests that modern consumers are tired of flatscreens and says the feature marks a nod to the analog – which we wholeheartedly agree with. Also tipping a hat to humanity (or at least the things humans enjoy) is a built-in pet cradle intended to bring man’s best friend along for the ride. While the cabin is upholstered in the time proven British materials like silk jacquard and wool, there are also experimental textures like a woven metal mesh called “Acrylic Couture” and surfaces embedded with 3D-printed titanium strips. If anything, it’s a shame the Bentley EXP 15’s exterior comes across as uninviting because its imaginative interior is anything but. Warm, welcoming and beautifully executed, the cabin is where we’d want to while away the hours in the company of good friends and a road trip-ready pooch.

Founded by Carroll Shelby in 1962, Shelby American quickly rose to prominence by creating the iconic Shelby Cobra 427 and Shelby GT350, and by taking the win at the prestigious World Manufacturers’ GT Championship. Shelby ’s saga of dominance began w ith the revolutionary 427 Cobra, an unmistakable vehicle that’s still beloved. In 1964, Carroll Shelby and renowned race car driver Ken Miles came up with a plan that involved integrating Ford’s powerful NASCAR 427 engine into the 289 Cobra chassis so that it could compete with rumored and more powerful creations from competitors. This outlandish move transformed the 289 Cobra into the 427 Cobra, a groundbreaking racecar that also came equipped with coil-spring suspension technology, an industry-first engineered by computer analysis. Although initially planned as competition-only vehicles, production challenges led Shelby American to creatively adapt unsold competition cars into highly sought-after “SemiCompetition” models, commonly known as the 427 Cobra S/C. Marketed as street-legal powerhouses, these cars thrilled enthusiasts with extraordinary performance— famously accelerating from zero to 100 mph and back to zero in just 13.2 seconds. While Shelby was busy with the 427 Cobra, the company was also hard at work revolutionizing Ford’s Mustang by transforming it into the legendary Shelby GT350. Motivated by Ford executive Lee Iacocca’s desire to elevate Mustang’s performance image, Shelby partnered with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). Shelby recruited engineer, road racer, and legend Chuck Cantwell, who quickly developed the GT350 into a competitive sports car in just six months. Demonstrating its dominance and capabilities, Ken Miles won decisively at the GT350’s debut race. The GT350’s exceptional performance throughout the 1965 racing season culminated in a commanding sweep at the SCCA B Production National Championship at Daytona, where GT350 race cars secured the top five positions, firmly establishing Shelby American’s racing credentials and transforming Mustang’s image.

Aston Martin’s new Apple Ultra system adds a great deal of functionality without sacrificing the convenience of classic CarPlay. WORDS : Kyle Hyatt
Apple CarPlay has been something of a godsend for those folks who find themselves regularly switching between vehicles. The consistent interface and compatibility with most of the apps you use regularly not only adds convenience, but it helps remove the distraction of hunting for functions in a factory infotainment system while you’re driving. Apple and Aston Martin thought they could do better, and so on June 25, 2025, rolled out Apple CarPlay Ultra to all 2023-and-up models. What is Apple CarPlay Ultra? It allows the CarPlay experience to move from just a vehicle’s center screen to the instrument screen, all while adding increased functionality. For example, previously, accessing climate control, radio and vehicle settings would require a driver to navigate out of CarPlay, into the native infotainment system and make changes. Now, with few exceptions, that’s a thing of the past. Like the rest of CarPlay’s functions, the new pages are clear and easy to use. The climate page allows you to adjust temperature for each zone in the vehicle as well as sync those zones, and you can also adjust fan speed and switch between auto or manual control. Vehicle settings are much the same, with drivers being able to adjust individual drive mode settings and more. S EP TEMBER 2 02 5

CarPlay Ultra also allows you to choose between a handful of gauge themes, backgrounds and colorways. The standard screen is an Aston Martin-specific one, featuring its signature green color, the wings logo and “Made in Great Britain” script on the upper right corner of the right dial. Other themes range from minimalist progress bar to the particularly useful big map. The latter is interesting because it doesn’t have to mirror the settings of the map on the center screen. For example, you can set the center screen to show as always North while the gauge screen is set to direction of travel. The most impressive part of this upgrade is that it almost doesn’t feel like a change at all. It’s extremely natural and responsive, particularly if you’re used to CarPlay already. It doesn’t appreciably increase distraction or time looking away from the road, and so feels like a safe, smart move for Aston. That ease of use and convenience were well proven during a two-hour drive around Los Angeles’ bustling Westside in a DBX 707, where the large map screen came in handy for navigating the tiny labyrinthine streets of Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. Importantly, Android Auto functionality doesn’t change, and those owners shouldn’t notice any change in functionality or usability in their vehicles. Even Apple users who want classic CarPlay will be happy, as they have the choice between CarPlay and CarPlay Ultra when connecting their phone to their vehicles. Any Aston Martin made after 2023 can be upgraded to CarPlay Ultra capability at a dealer and it’s offered as a standard feature on all Aston Martin vehicles going forward. HONDA’S FIRST F1 WINNER REBORN
To commemorate the 60th anniversary of its maiden Formula 1 victory, Honda Racing Corporation partnered with world-renowned model maker Amalgam Collection to recreate one of its most historically significant racing cars – this time in 1:8 and 1:18 scale. The RA272, which claimed Japan’s first-ever Grand Prix win in 1965, will be revealed in exquisitely detailed miniature form at The Q uail, A Motorspor ts Gathering during Monterey Car Week. The original story began in 1963, when motorcycle giant Honda Motor Co. produced its first automobile, the T360 mini pickup. Within a year, Honda entered F1 with a fully in-house car and engine program. By 1965, in just its second season of competition, the brand achieved its breakthrough. That historic moment came at the Mexican Grand Prix, held at Ciudad Deportiva Magdalena Mixhuca in Mexico City. American driver Richie Ginther, piloting a Honda RA272, led every lap to secure victory over Dan Gurney’s Brabham by 2.8 seconds. Ginther had qualified third behind F1 legends Jim Clark and Gurney, but seized the lead at the first corner and never looked back. Mechanical issues sidelined both Clark and BRM rivals Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart, while Ginther’s teammate

throughout the weekend. Complicating matters, the drivers’ race numbers were reassigned each time a car switch took place. Adding to the confusion, only one of the two cars, RA272F-102, featured Honda’s “H” badge on the nose. The other, RA272F-103, lacked it. Identifying features like vent placement and mechanical detailing became crucial clues. In those days, it was common for drivers to share or alternate cars, often choosing whichever chassis performed better during practice or qualifying. Historical images show Ginther practicing in the nose-badged RA272F-102, briefly running race number 11. However, photographs from race day confirm that he drove RA272F-103, the car with no nose badge and distinctive vents, when he took the checkered flag. Now, 60 years later, that exact winning configuration is being immortalized in both 1:8 and 1:18 scale. For collectors and Formula 1 historians alike, it is more than a model – it is a moment of racing history reborn.

Ronnie Bucknum finished in the top five, marking a banner day for the all-Japanese factory team, which fielded cars designed by Yoshio Nakamura and Shoichi Sano, and powered by its amazing 1.5-liter transversely mounted V12 engine. The team ran under the Honda R&D Company banner and wore national racing colors with a red rising sun graphic just ahead of the cockpit. To celebrate this milestone, a faithful replica of the winning RA272 has been created. “HRC US is thrilled to present this meticulously crafted model of Honda’s rich racing heritage to automotive historians, collectors, and enthusiasts,” said Meliza Humphrey, HRC GM of Merchandise and Memorabilia. “The unwavering attention to detail and period accuracy pays homage to the significant challenge and remarkable achievement of the Honda team on the world stage in 1965.” The build process began with a precise 3D scan of the original car, now housed in the Honda Collection Hall in Motegi, Japan. From there, Amalgam engineers created a virtual model in CAD, followed by a master pattern for each of the 1,600 individual components required to assemble the scale replica. But the recreation process brought its own mystery. During their deep dive into race archives and period photography, Amalgam researchers discovered that the two RA272 chassis – numbered 102 and 103 – had been swapped repeatedly between Ginther and Bucknum

75 years of Formula 1 racing is celebrated by a magnificent anniversary display at Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, and expert curator Ellen Bireley gives us the inside line on how she pulled it all together from around the world.

duPont REGISTRY: What was your overarching vision when curating the 75th anniversary F1 display for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion? Ellen Bireley: First of all, I wanted to get cars from every decade. I wanted to get cars that were evolutionary; key to the development of F1 through the decades and progressed its technology. I wanted ones from the very start, and one that was the most recent. From the 1950s, I have cars with highly significant history from Mercedes, Maserati, BRM, Cooper, and Vanwall. Then I reached out to Zak [Brown, McLaren Racing’s CEO], literally two weeks after McLaren won the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, and said: “Hey, what’s the possibility of getting Lando Norris’s car?” And I was fully expecting him to say, “Sorry, it’s going to be super busy at other engagements,” and he was like, “Yeah sure, you can have it.” I was fully expecting a no, so I was pleasantly surprised to say the least! Then, the next day, Zak texted me and said, “Hey, do you want Fittipaldi’s championship car from ’74, and do you want Lauda’s championship car from ’84?” And I was like, “Yes please!” dR: Did you focus on anything in particular? Ellen Bireley: When I do an exhibit, I want to have the overall theme, but then there are so many stories within the story that you can tell. With the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion being an event in the United States, I wanted to kind of focus on the American angle of Formula 1. So, I looked at the American chassis that have been built over the years and tried to get examples of all of those – and I did. There are six cars that were built and raced in Formula 1, so I have examples of all those and I’ve grouped those together within the exhibit. Then I looked at the American world drivers’ champions. I have cars representing each of the Americans, which would be Mario Andretti and Phil Hill.

dR: How do you balance historical significance, rarity, and visual impact when selecting cars for a celebration of this scale? Ellen Bireley: I worked on a list of cars that have won major races, a list of the drivers that have won world championships, and then unusual F1 history. I also wanted to put stuff in the exhibit that people just don’t really know or would not have thought of. For example, I have the very Honda RA272 that Los Angeles-born driver Richie Ginther drove to victory in the 1965 Mexico GP, the first ever win by a Japanese F1 constructor. dR: What role did private collectors and museums play, and can you give an insight into your negotiations? Ellen Bireley: A lot of the owners I deal with a lot, because they have such diverse collections. So, as an example, Revs Institute is providing us with the ’58 Vanwall and a ’59 Cooper T51. The Cooper was one of the cars I really wanted in the exhibit. We’d already agreed on the Vanwall, and they’re taking a Lancia D50 to Pebble Beach. I mean, that’s a great car too – but I really wanted the Cooper. Scott [George, Curator of Collections] and I go way back, we had numerous conversations, and then finally he called me up and said, “I think we can do the Cooper.” And I’m like, “Yes!” A lot of times it’s just a lot of conversations and organizing with the owners to get them comfortable sending their car out. Really, the owners have been fantastic. And we also have a great relationship with Pebble Beach. dR: What does it mean to you personally when you see your amazing exhibition happen right in front of you? Ellen Bireley: What I really enjoy is walking around and listening to our visitors come and look at the exhibit and hear them talking about stuff they didn’t know. The opportunity to step back into time with a fully preserved EAG Signature E39 M5 is highly desirable. dR: Can you share the story behind one of the most unique or rare vehicles you’ve sold? EAG: A moment that sticks out was selling the last VIN US spec E30 M3. It was a vehicle that was utilized to help repave Lime Rock Park, finished in Alpine White. We sold it to a local collecter and huge proponent/member of BMW CCA. We then reached out to another dear friend and client about an event happening during Concours weekend. He brought up the very first VIN E30 M3 also finished in Alpine White. So there was a weekend we had the very first and very last E30 M3 VINs. dR: How do you create a memorable experience for your clients? EAG: The car buying experience should be a celebration! From the moment you pick up the phone to the moment the vehicle is delivered, you’re working with true enthusiasts and experts to answer even the most technical questions. Once a vehicle is sold our General Manager continues to provide updates as the vehicle travels through our final sales service which includes a separate final service check to ensure the vehicle is turn-key, updates if the buyer wishes to install upgrades prior to delivery, and of course photos of the vehicle being loaded up for its journey to you!

dR: What trends are you noticing in BMW market? EAG: The top condition vehicles continue to command the top of the price range consistently but now mid-range vehicles are becoming an option with our rejuvenation department. We’ll now have clients find that exact color combination, spec, or model year that requires attention but checks all their personal preference boxes and they’ll send the vehicle to us for the EAG Experience and end product. dR: How has the profile of the BMW buyer evolved in recent years? EAG: The market is younger and we’re thrilled to see the genuine enthusiasm hasn’t fallen off in the slightest. It’s not uncommon to have a client drive in with a G80 M3, tastefully modded, interested in a fully stock E30 M3 out of our inventory. The internet is a mega stage without a filter so you’ll see the center of it change as the wind blows, but well preserved classic examples of beloved brands are always anchored in appreciation. dR: What should people know about Enthusiast Auto Group when first stepping on the showroom floor? EAG: The business was founded and is currently operated by enthusiasts. SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON FERRARI F50 Long overshadowed by its Ferrari siblings, the F50 is finally basking in the supercar spotlight it always deserved. WORDS : Andrew Riedell
Monterey Car Week celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Ferrari F50, the third member of the famed Italian manufacturer’s celebrated flagship supercar series. In an opportunistic bit of timing, auction house RM Sotheby’s is offering a rare yellow example as part of their sale on the peninsula that week, quoting a would-be public record estimate of $6.5–7.5m. With a price like that, the F50 is clearly one of Ferrari’s modern darlings, but things weren’t always that way. Initial reception in 1995 was mixed; the car’s styling was polarizing, and factoryquoted performance figures suffered in comparison to those of the two-year-old McLaren F1, and only modestly surpassed those of the F50’s predecessor, the F40. For a long time, the F50 wore a reputation as the overlooked sibling of Ferrari’s supercar lineage, and its numerous desirable qualities have only shined through at a more mature age. The model was launched with an unorthodox purchase format meant to prevent the rampant flipping that the F40 had experienced. Buyers had to provide a down payment, commit to a two-year lease, and finally pay a closing lump sum at the end of the lease. The US price added up to $561k, or $1.2m in today’s dollars. Despite global economic weakness that throttled sales of the McLaren F1, and bankrupted Bugatti, Ferrari managed to sell all 349 planned examples, plus a few more for good measure, ultimately building 377 units inclusive of pre-production cars. The F40 at this point was trading in the range of $250-300k, or about half the price of its new sibling. By 2002, the F50 was beginning to regularly appear at auction, where it tended to yield $400-500k on the secondary market. The F40 was still selling for $250-300k, now closer to two-thirds of the F50’s depreciating value. In that year, the fourth member of the supercar series, the Enzo, entered the market at $653k, a 45% premium over an F50. By 2008, F50s were selling for about $650k on average, still well short of the model’s then inflation-adjusted MSRP of $784k. F40s were trading at $475k, which lagged on average behind the dupontregistry.com

F50, but excellent examples were outselling weaker F50s, a much rarer occurrence today. Post-recession recovery in the 2010s then saw F50s sharply adjust upward in value. Early in 2011, three F50s sold publicly between $660k and $814k, prices that would make underbidders kick themselves for years to come. In 2012, F50s finally began trading on average above the model’s inflation-adjusted MSRP, then $855k. By the time of the $1.42m launch of the series’ fifth member, 2013’s LaFerrari, the F50 was already a seven-figure car. The enthusiasm only continued through broader collector car market highs in 2014 and 2016, and excellent F50s were trading regularly above $2m. To take a snapshot at the end of 2016, the only member of the supercar series that trailed the F50 in average value was the F40 at $1.27m. The F50 itself was trading at $2m, behind the 288 GTO at $2.28m and the Enzo at $2.31m. The still-new LaFerrari was being flipped regularly for $3.5-4m. This would be one of the last years that the F50 sat near the bottom of the pack. Excellent F50 examples flirted with figures above $3m in the following years, but the real excitement began during the post-COVID collector car market boom. A comfortable public record of $3.77m in May 2021 was quickly beaten by a $3.97m sale that August. Suddenly, a top F50 was nearly a $4m car. 2022 would deliver upon that anticipation, with no fewer than four F50s selling publicly beyond that threshold. Two of those four in the latter half of the year didn’t stop there and went on to sell above $5m. By then, the F50 had established its supremacy over its siblings, under whose shadows it had sat for so long – and it has only bolstered this position since. The highest public sale to date for a 288 GTO is $4.41m, for an F40 $3.97m, for an Enzo $4.43m (excluding the Pope-donated example), and for a LaFerrari Coupe $4.7m. Meanwhile, three more F50 examples have publicly sold above $5m since 2022, and new record prices were set in 2024’s Monterey Car Week and again earlier this year. The high currently stands at $5.53m. What explains this transformation into the belle of the ball? The F50 has a plethora of enviable qualities that strangely took many years to be fully appreciated. It stands unique in the supercar series as the sole member to pair a V12 with manual transmission, a combination that only grows more special as Ferrari moves further away from both characteristics. Additionally, the F50 is the only model in the series built by default as an open-top car (the LaFerrari was eventually also offered in open-top configuration). Further, the F50 is naturally aspirated and internal combustion-only (joined by just the Enzo), incorporates an F1-derived engine, is the second-rarest member of the series, and is the only member wearing a build plaque numbering each example. These qualities have risen to the surface over the years, and turned the F50 into the most valuable entry in Ferrari’s illustrious lineage. RM Sotheby’s’ offering in Monterey features a rare, 1-of-31 Giallo Modena (yellow) F50, and this sale stands a good chance of lifting the public record even higher.
