1. Rolls-Royce Sweptail The ideal Rolls-Royce for a dream garage must be a one-off, and for me, it’s the Sweptail. Unveiled in 2017 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the Sweptail is a coupe built on the same platform that underpins the seventh-generation Phantom Coupe. It is inspired by yachts as well as the marque’s work from the 1920s and ’30s. Costing well over $10 million, the project began in 2013. Its interior is made up almost entirely of leather, Macassar Ebony, and open-pore Paldao wood. A panoramic glass roof allows for plenty of light to shine through, while its cabin isn’t cluttered with unnecessary screens. Plus, the only thing more special than a Rolls-Royce is one that’s uniquely yours.

2. Pagani Utopia Roadster The Pagani Utopia Coupe I drove late last year continues to stand out as one of the most thrilling experiences I’ve had yet. The Utopia is rapid, light, and, thanks to its focus on creating a sensory experience, a hypercar with plenty of tactility. It’s the kind of machine that never fails to remind you of just how special it is, a feat not every car at its price point achieves. The Roadster elevates the experience with open-air access to this car’s V12 engine note, while an optional manual transmission only sweetens the deal. With prices starting well past the $3 million mark, and only 130 examples planned for production, the Utopia Roadster will remain one of the rarest hypercars. However, few others can match its sense of occasion and its painstaking attention to detail. AUG UST 2 02 5

3. McLaren Senna LM Like the Pagani, this pick is also inspired by a recent drive. During last year’s Monterey Car Week, I had the opportunity to experience an early McLaren Senna prototype, and it’s undoubtedly the most manic road car I’ve ever driven. The phrase “racecar for the road” gets thrown around too liberally, but in the Senna’s case, there’s no better way to describe it. Look at its giant active wing, or its purposefully sculpted bodywork, and you’ll have no doubt that form follows function in this case. Like all McLaren LM models, this special Senna is built to celebrate the brand’s 1995 Le Mans win. While a total of 500 Sennas rolled out of Woking’s doors, priced at $1.2 million when new, just 20 LM models exist, taking an already wild machine and increasing its longterm appeal.

4. Porsche 911 GT2 (993 Generation) While you won’t find any shortage of enthusiasts for whom the Lamborghini Countach holds the spot of iconic poster car, the 993-generation 911 GT2 is the one for me. Built at a time when Porsche’s special edition models needed to satisfy homologation requirements, the GT2 used the 993 Turbo as its base, sending all its power to its rear wheels. It featured flared fenders to accommodate its widened track and sported a stripped-out interior inspired heavily by the 993 Carrera RS. Porsche built just 200 examples of the GT2 and 15 units of the ultra-hardcore GT2 Evolution that followed. With prices hovering around the $1.5 million mark, this limited-run 911 stands out as the clear predecessor to today’s modern performance cars. While it’s not nearly as well-known as other supercars from the time, if I had just one last tank of fuel to spend, I’d pour it into the GT2’s tank.

5. Lamborghini Murciélago LP640-4 SV There’s a caveat for this one. Not every SV is dream garage-worthy, but one equipped with a six-speed manual transmission certainly earns a spot. While the Murciélago SV isn’t the best-handling or the quickest supercar ever produced, its combination of a naturally aspirated V12 and a clutch pedal is one we’ll likely never see again in modern production cars. From its sporty look, thanks to its inclusion of a more aggressive aero, to its wide stance, this is one of Lamborghini’s most impactful cars in its back catalog. However, this one is made even more special as rumors suggest that the carmaker built just six manual SVs, and only five remain today. With prices drifting deep into the seven-figure range, this limited-run Raging Bull is already a highly desirable classic.

A classic Lamborghini is a beautiful thing, but by now, many of those hand-built machines from Sant’Agata have gotten tired or mistreated as they’ve filtered from owner to owner, shop to shop, and from decade to decade. While many owners want to put their cars right, finding the right people to take one of these bulls from a tired driver or barn find to a concours-winning masterpiece is extremely difficult, or it was until around 10 years ago, when Lamborghini unveiled its Polo Storico program. Polo Storico, like other manufacturers’ classic divisions, offers classic restoration and parts, plus certifications of vehicle originality. However, because Lamborghini has experienced significant financial turmoil and numerous owners throughout its 62-year history, the fact that Polo Storico exists at all is a small miracle in itself.

THE ARCHIVE Lamborghini’s archives aren’t part of some massive subterranean vault or even housed in their own building. Instead, they’re stored in a room not much bigger than a large walk-in closet. This space holds the records for every Lamborghini built through the end of the Diablo, as well as some for the Murciélago, which Polo Storico doesn’t yet cover. It all makes sense when you consider just how low-volume Lamborghini was in the pre-Audi era, having built around 10,000 cars between 1963 and 2001. In addition to the build sheets and correspondence for each VIN, the archives contain a collection of sales brochures and handwritten composition notebooks with the build order and data for each model. It all feels very “cottage industry,” and in some ways it is. The Polo Storico certification team consists of just two employees, who together are responsible for researching the history and originality of cars for their owners as part of the official certification process. This process can take nearly a year in some cases and costs an average of $8,000 to $14,000 with a waitlist of around eight months. It can be initiated through your Lamborghini dealer and doesn’t require a vehicle to be shipped to Italy. If a car is deemed to be sufficiently original and correct, the vehicle owners will receive a beautifully bound book that showcases all the documentation found on their vehicle, as well as a certificate signed by Lamborghini executives. While the archive provides a great deal of information on individual vehicles, it is unable to tell the complete story of how Lamborghini operated at a given time. For this, Polo Storico collaborates with a select group of former employees to not only fill knowledge gaps in the archive but also to pass on their highly unique expertise and skills to a new generation. Walter Rinaldi, for example, began working at the company in 1964 at the age of 15 and remained there until his retirement in 2010. He is able to give a living history of the early days when Ferrucio still walked the factory floor, and throughout the brand’s tumultuous history. Needless to say, we could have listened to his stories all day.

RESTORATION PROCESS In addition to certification, Polo Storico’s primary role is to provide in-house restoration of classic Lamborghini vehicles. Customers can choose between one of two types of restorations: the concours-level full restoration or the sympathetic restoration, which attempts to preserve as much of the car’s original parts as possible. The typical Polo Storico restoration will take between 2,000 and 4,000 hours to complete, and costs well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Since its inception in 2015, Polo Storico has completed 40 restorations. These range from the Miura from the Italian Job to the Countach that served as the pace car for the 1981 Monaco Grand Prix. The restoration process starts with a lengthy inspection of the vehicle to determine what it needs. This requires both a lot of drive time as well as a detailed investigation of the car on a lift. Technicians make detailed notes on all of their findings before any work is actually carried out. Once the cars are evaluated, teardown begins, and from there it will be several years before an owner gets their car back. The complexity of a restoration at Polo Storico varies greatly depending on the model being restored, the level of restoration needed, and the availability of replacement parts, which may necessitate new runs of old parts being reproduced, complicating matters further.

THE DRIVE As part of a demonstration of what a car goes through at Polo Storico, we were given a truncated version of the process where we inspected several vehicles from Lamborghini’s collection, including a gorgeous 400 GT 2+2, an LM002, as well as both the last Countach and Diablo ever made. In addition to poking around the cars with a clipboard in the sweltering Italian summer heat, we were also given the opportunity to drive them. Perhaps most surprising among the vehicles on offer was the 2001 Diablo 6.0 SE. While we’d expected a cramped, hot, brutal experience, what we got was something else entirely. The Diablo SE is more of a driver’s car than you might think, with power-assisted steering, working air conditioning, a manageable clutch and a weighty but pleasant gated shifter. Even the passenger accommodations were shockingly comfortable, minus the large fire extinguisher that was sliding around the passenger footwell – these are old Italian supercars, after all. Polo Storico will continue its birthday celebrations at Monterey Car Week in August.

While Neil raced in Ferrari Challenge, a young Stirling helped on the pit crew, and they grew to even become team-mates and race together. As time has gone by, it is high-end car collecting that’s become their shared passion. This amazing white collection features some stunningly high-spec Ferraris, including Daytona SP3, Monza SP2, 812 Competizione Aperta, F12tdf, and 458 Speciale Aperta, all carrying the classic white and blue colors of North American Racing Team. “Our collection is mostly white cars with blue stripes, and the idea was to pay homage to the NART racing cars of the ’50s and ’60s,” says Neil. “They raced in white and blue, or blue and white, and that’s the inspiration for them, so most of them are the same color.” NART was the hugely successful racing team founded in 1958, created by businessman Luigi Chinetti, to promote the Ferrari marque in North America through endurance racing. Sports car victories at Daytona were one thing, but what truly sticks in the mind is John Surtees winning the 1964 Formula 1 World Championship in these colors, thanks to a runner-up finish in the Mexican Grand Prix, after Enzo Ferrari abandoned the familiar racing red of Italy in a temporary fit of dupontregistry.com

Back in the day, white and blue were the national colors of the teams licensed in the United States, with the design incorporating ‘Briggs Cunningham racing stripes’. For the Fairmans, these exotic Ferraris are more than precious metal and carbon fiber – in the NART colors they become unique milestones; heirlooms to be treasured. It was the 458 Speciale that kick-started their combined journey, as Stirling relates: “When my father got offered the car, he asked me, ‘shall we take this thing?’ and I was like, ‘yes, we should!’ After that, we started getting offered other cars, and that’s when we decided to start this collection.” Their mutual automotive love, whether it’s for racing or car collecting, has become far more than a hobby – it’s enjoyment that’s set a dynasty in motion. In a world that often moves too fast, these moments of connection offer something enduring. Neil says: “Stirling started helping my mechanics when he was four, five, six-years old, and he loved it. He became a very good kart racer, and going to all these events really bonded us. It gave us a special relationship that we still enjoy today through the car collecting. He curates it with me, and he looks after all the cars.” Father and son raced together in the Miami 500 using a Ferrari 458 GT3 Evo, which they still own as part of their amazing collection. In fact, it totally stands out as it’s in Ferrari’s traditional colors! Stirling recalls: “It was an amazing experience to race together, and we finished first, and then we did Monza Rally together, which was also fantastic.” It’s reassuring to know that some collect not only to display their automotive passion, but to inspire. It’s no longer just about how fast it goes, or how loud it screams. It’s about how distinct it looks, and how it rises above the algorithm. A standout garage today is not just a gallery of automotive art; a collection should be more than valuable – it should be unforgettable.

••• What made the trip really special was being surrounded by a small, passionate group of people who really live and breathe the spirit of Rolls-Royce.

Colorado Springs has this way of catching you off guard. You land expecting postcard views, and sure, you get them, but it’s the stillness in the air, the contrast between mountainous peaks and comfort, that really speaks volumes. I flew in for a weekend with Rolls-Royce and the Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club, not entirely sure what to expect. The location? The Cheyenne Mountain Resort: secluded, luxurious, and somehow perfectly casual all at the same time. What made the trip really special, though, wasn’t just the scenery or the five-star treatment. It was being surrounded by a small, passionate group of people who really live and breathe the spirit of Rolls-Royce. From the moment I checked in, it felt less like a corporate showcase and more like a gathering of storytellers focused on preserving the brand’s earliest eras with a mix of historic and modern models. Getting behind the wheel of the new Cullinan and the updated Ghost Black Badge Series II on Colorado’s mountain roads was an experience I won’t forget anytime soon. The Cullinan remains the king of commanding presence with subtle tech and design updates, but in the great outdoors, climbing 14,115 feet toward the summit of Pikes Peak, it felt surprisingly light on its feet – smooth, sure-footed, and so quiet it made the Rockies feel even more remote. The Ghost Black Badge, however, is more of a performance powerhouse disguised in a tuxedo. It hugged the high-altitude curves like a light and nimble sedan, and inside, it’s so comfort-focused you almost forget you’re driving until a tight corner demands your attention. There’s something surreal about flying through switchbacks with the Starlight Headliner glowing above you like a night sky – it’s sensory overload in the best way possible. The two models deliver completely different experiences, but both speak the same Rolls-Royce language: effortless, luxurious, and cool without trying too hard. AUGUST 2 02 5

But the sense of community and pride really stuck with me throughout the trip. The Owners’ Club isn’t just a collection of wealthy enthusiasts – it’s families, friends, and enthusiasts who’ve fallen in love with these cars. Some traveled far and wide with immaculate pre-war Phantoms; others rolled up in modern marvels with wild specs. One owner let me in on the story behind his two-tone Silver Cloud, a car he inherited from his father that he now drives across the country to meetups like this. It was that kind of weekend – casual conversations turning into deeper stories, people connecting over a shared love for craftsmanship and tradition. There’s a quiet humility among the owners that’s disarming in the best way, especially when you realize how many of these cars carry decades of family history. The Sunday Concours on the lawn of the Country Club of Colorado at Cheyenne Mountain was a culmination of heritage and passion. Dozens of Rolls-Royces, perfectly arranged with the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop, and all generations of Phantoms lined up for the model’s 100th anniversary. It felt more like a living timeline than an automotive event. Seeing some of the first-ever Phantoms parked beside the latest iteration really drove home how far the brand’s come without ever losing its core DNA. Those in attendance weren’t rushing around or glued to their phones – everyone was taking their time, asking questions, pointing out details, and admiring the little things. I found myself getting caught up in it too. One car had been in the same family since new,

with the original tool kit still neatly packed in the trunk. That kind of detail tells you everything you need to know about the people who show up to these events and carry on the legacy of Rolls-Royce. The weekend wrapped with a black-tie Gala that somehow still felt relaxed. There were some heartfelt moments, a few surprise awards, and more than a few emotional speeches – especially when the junior judges of the Rolls-Royce Owners Club were called to the stage to present some of the awards. That one hit home, as the entire group was watching the future generation of the RROC being passed the baton by some of the oldest members. It reminded me that this whole scene is more about legacy, time well spent, and passing down a sense of appreciation for something beautifully built. As the night wound down and the room raised a final toast to the club’s past and future, I realized this was both a weekend about Rolls-Royce and everything that makes the brand timeless: people, pride, and passion. Driving out the next morning, with the sun just creeping over the mountains, I couldn’t help but feel a bit changed. It’s easy to look at Rolls-Royce from the outside and see just the price tags and prestige. But spend a few days in the fold, and you start to see the deeper layers. The owners, the stories, the commitment to quality – it’s all very real. And when it all comes together, at a place like this, it’s a reminder of why we fall in love with cars in the first place.

This one-of-one Porsche 963 RSP channels the legendary road-legal 917K commissioned by the heir to the Martini & Rossi booze fortune, and honors the team chief who brought Porsche back to ﬁght for overall victory at Le Mans.

Porsche has quietly rewritten the rules of what a dream garage centerpiece can be. Meet the Porsche 963 RSP – a one-of-one machine that defies convention, blending cutting-edge motorsport technology with handcrafted, heritage-inspired details. Built as a tribute, executed with surgical precision, and destined to be a future icon, this is the ultimate expression of what happens when money, legacy, and imagination are given no limits. Built as a rolling homage to the road-going Porsche 917K that Count Rossi commissioned to drive on public roads in 1975, the 963 RSP revives that renegade spirit 50 years later, armed with modern firepower. Based on Porsche’s LMDh racing prototype, the RSP uses a 4.6-liter twinturbocharged V8 hybrid drivetrain borrowed from the 963 racer, itself a descendant of the RS Spyder and 918 Spyder. Unlike its competition siblings, the RSP is more than a machine that’s defined by the stopwatch. It’s a bespoke object of desire – one that’s meant to be seen and savored. The project was born from a conversation between Porsche executives at Road Atlanta, but its soul comes from decades of racing passion. With renowned American race team boss Roger Penske’s name woven into the moniker – the Captain’s middle name is Searle – this car represents the shared vision of Porsche AG, Porsche Penske Motorsport, and Porsche Cars North America. Their collective challenge: create a machine that could salute the 917, which won back-to-back editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971, while standing as a timeless collector’s piece. Visually, the 963 RSP commands attention with its hand-applied Martini Silver paint – a significant departure from the wrapped liveries of today’s race cars. Painting over its carbon-Kevlar bodywork required Porsche’s Sonderwunsch team to push boundaries, verifying the original paint codes from the 1975 car and applying a triple-layer lacquer. Satin black wing connectors and 3D-printed badging add subtle but rich finishing touches. Inside, the cabin transforms the bare-bones cockpit of the 963 racer into a space worthy of a concours lawn. Trimmed in tan leather and Alcantara, per Count Martini’s taste, it includes a

handcrafted single-piece carbon seat with built-in air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and even a 3D-printed cup holder – because you’ll need an espresso before launching down the Mulsanne Straight! But the RSP isn’t built just to be admired; more importantly, it was engineered to be driven. For its debut on public roads near Le Mans, the car was made street-legal under special provisions from the French authorities. A raised ride height, softened Multimatic dampers, fender covers, and wet-weather Michelin tires made it compliant enough to wear manufacturer plates. Even the ECU was reprogrammed to activate signals and lighting systems suitable for real-world traffic. Step forward Juan Manuel Fayen, founder of CollectionSuites near Miami International Airport, which has gone beyond its concept of a luxury warehouse space and developed into a community of like-minded collectors. The reason he’s called Juan Manuel is because of his father’s close relationship with his namesake Fangio, the five-time Formula 1 champion with whom his dad co-drove on numerous occasions (pictured above) in big races. And not many people can claim that! Launched in 2018, the original four-building complex comprises 38 customizable suites, each ranging from 2,000 to 2,600 square feet. Designed with the modern collector in mind, who might have an eight-figure compendium, all CollectionSuites feature sumptuous high-end finishes, advanced automation, and state-ofthe-art security systems, ensuring both elegance and peace of mind. “I was born into cars,” says Fayen, who is a racer himself, along with his sons. “Cars are my life, and we decided to build something special for the collector. We checked the market in Miami, back in 2016, and we did not find anything like the luxury that we were looking for. So, we built something different ourselves, focused on luxury and completely gated with security, so nobody can see what’s inside. We targeted the finish of materials, lighting, climate control, so it’s the perfect place to store your cars, your art, or your fine wines.” Building on the sold-out success of its first iteration, CollectionSuites 2.0 will soon debut adjacent to the original site. This development, currently under construction, introduces 14 expansive suites, varying from 2,800 to 7,100 square feet, each equipped with mezzanines, wine cellars, and cutting-edge technology. October, and we expect to finish building in January 2026, and we’re already 50% sold out. We’ve learned how to deliver an even better product, and the new clubhouse is a very good example.” Looking even further ahead, CollectionSuites is set to bring its unparalleled concept to Palm Beach. With completion anticipated by fall 2026, this new venture will offer 20 premium suites complemented by a luxurious clubhouse. The choice every owner of a new, high-dollar car faces is always: “How much should I drive it?” Emotionally, buyers want to unleash their exciting new purchase and benefit from the exclusive experience it brings. Substantial time, money, and effort go into engineering these machines to be better than what came before at going, steering, and stopping. Financially, these same owners know that each mile driven is resale money leaving their pocket in this mileage-obsessed market. Recently, at Broad Arrow’s Villa d’Este auction in Italy, a 2000 BMW Z8 was offered with 14.3k miles on the clock, selling for $268k USD. Days earlier, another Z8 in the same color (Titanium Silver) with twice the mileage sold at auction for $159k – a $109k discount. A few weeks before both, a third Z8 in the same color with 87k miles sold for $122k, a further $37k discount. The benchmark here? Earlier this year, a fourth Z8 in the same color was offered with only 19 miles on the odometer, essentially undriven. It sold for $367k – a jaw-dropping $99k above the 14k-mile car. Varying sales regions are in play here, but the Z8’s MSRP in the States was $135k, or $258k in today’s dollars. The collector mindset of the string of owners of the 19-mile car thus produced an example that appreciated in value substantially between new and now. The 14k-mile example appreciated as well, but cars bring with them a variety of expenses that complicate the profit and loss calculation. Insurance, service, storage, and other incidentals add up over time, and certainly this car was at least a minor money loser after these adjustments.

DRIVE OR PRESERVE? Cars are undoubtedly made to be driven. Despite this, many special cars spend their entire lives barely turning a wheel, having been purchased primarily for preservation, investment, or as collectible pieces of art. WORDS : Andrew Riedell

The 28k-mile and 87k-mile cars are well ‘in the red’, so let’s consider a different metric popular in the comments sections of online auctions: the cost to have driven each mile. It’s simple – take the decline in value and divide by the mileage driven. Relative to inflation-adjusted MSRP, the 28k-mile Z8 lost $3.52 per mile driven, whereas the 87k-mile example lost only $1.56 per mile. Relative to the uncorked Z8 and the comparable investment return of never having driven each car, the 14k-mile car lost $6.92 per mile, the 28k-mile car lost $7.43, and the 87k-mile car lost $2.82. With some exception, we see the cost per mile go down as the cars get used more and more. In general, the mileage vs price relationship starts steep and then flattens. Adding 5k miles to a 50k-mile car detracts from the value far less than adding 5k miles to a 2k-mile car, a trend that typically only falls apart with older models regularly experiencing restorations. For some buyers, it’s more attractive to seek higher-mileage, ‘driver’ examples which can be used with less anxiety about depreciation. The Z8 holds an interesting market position where cars today straddle either side of the return curve. Preserved examples have appreciated, while used examples have depreciated. Some models, like the 2005/06 Ford GT discussed in last month’s column, have seen almost all ships rise with the tide – you need to look for a truly beaten example to find one that hasn’t outpaced its MSRP plus inflation. Most car models – even the special ones – fall into a third category: depreciation nearly across the board. Pick a handful of sports and luxury cars from any era and you’ll see that most of them did not make it back to their inflation-adjusted MSRP today. This usually even includes ultra-low-mileage examples clearly put aside for collecting.

Hopefully, in these cases, the owners got their return in the form of enjoyment out of displaying and looking at their rolling art. Occasionally, exceptions do arise from areas of the market that otherwise see almost no examples become an appreciating asset. Low mileage is such a powerful factor in collectability that it can even manifest the entire attribute out of almost nowhere. A few years ago, at online auction, a 1987 Saab 900 Turbo sold for $150k. A 900 Turbo can typically be had for $5-20k any day of the week, so what set this example apart? It presented with 246 miles on the odometer. This car wasn’t made to be a collectible, and surely almost all other 900 Turbo owners didn’t treat theirs as such. However, at least one did, and that unique act of preservation made this car a can’t-miss candidate for a museum or a particularly Saab-dedicated collector. A $32k original MSRP, or $93k in today’s dollars, means that this example appreciated while nearly all its peers cratered in value. We can only speculate how many people are stowing away somewhat pedestrian cars today in hopes of chasing this scenario! The car community often bristles at sports car owners not driving their expensive toys, but at the end of the day, the choice belongs to the owner alone. Broadly speaking, storing for a financial return later typically has not produced the desired outcome. Still, for certain buyers, the chance to realize a money-making sale down the road – or even just the opportunity to be the custodian of the best example extant – makes the whole preservation decision, and the abstinence that comes with it, worth it. *Please note that the information provided is for informational purposes only and should not be considered as financial advice. Hunter Shaw: My journey began in a 2500 sq ft facility in 2019 and quickly expanded into our current massive 15,000 sq ft facility. Growing up, I was always fascinated by how beautiful exotic cars were, and as I bought my first R8, enjoyed it and sold it, I realized that I somehow wanted to be in this industry but I didn’t want to just open a typical dealership and sell cars, I wanted to share my experience of how much a car changed me with others who had yet to have this feeling. dR: How does your dealership differentiate itself from others in the luxury car market? Hunter Shaw: We stand out in the luxury car market by specializing in exceptionally unique, high-spec examples of exotic vehicles.
