BROTHERS IN ARMS A bond forged in battle endures the test of time for two local ex-servicemen

DAVID Christensen remembers the day at the Nui Dat Australian army base in South Vietnam when he realised he was finally going home, ushered on to several military helicopters and dropped on to the HMAS Sydney among 1500 other men. By his side was Dennis Anderson, another Queenslander from Redcliffe, the pair lying face down on the ship as shells and bullets flew through the sky and towards the ship. “All these choppers, there must have been about thirty of them, American and Australian. They said just jump on the chopper, and it’ll take you to where you’re going,” says David of that night. “They were flying low, and we were going out to sea. Above us, you could hear all these rounds coming; you could hear them through the air, the battleships firing. “The choppers were like taxis going backwards and forwards. They told us to hit the deck and jump out of the chopper, we hit steel, and we were on the HMAS Sydney. It was a harrowing experience. All we had were our kit bags and the jungle greens we had on,” says David. Read the full story on Page 02
