A Nutritionist’s Guide to
Feeding Yourself After Having a Baby
The moment your little baby arrives into the world, your entire focus shifts completely to your bundle of joy. However, it’s important to remember that your body has just gone through one of the most intense physiological events a human can experience. As a Registered Nutritionist, here are my top tips to help you over the next few months:
Eat enough calories: Calories come from our macronutrients; protein, fat and carbohydrates and each one has a role in your recovery.
Protein: Protein helps with tissue repair whether you had a tear, a C-section or just to support your body during the postpartum period.
Fat: Fat provides an energy source, regulates hormones, supports tissue repair and helps us to absorb fat soluble vitamins.
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates, especially complex ones (whole grains, starchy vegetables, legumes, pulses), provide energy to get you through busy days and sleepdeprived nights.
These will provide vitamins, minerals and especially fibre which will support your gut and prevent postpartum constipation.
Include an iron rich food at every meal: Having a baby involves significant blood loss so your body needs a steady intake of iron to rebuild iron stores, which directly impacts your daily energy levels. Include foods like red meat, seafood or plant iron such as pumpkin seeds, beans, lentils, eggs and fortified cereals paired with Vitamin C to support absorption.
Drink plenty of water: This supports digestion and tissue repair, while also preventing constipation which is espeically important in the first few weeks after giving birth.
Zero-Prep Grab-and-Go Food Ideas
These require absolutely no cooking and can be eaten with one hand while feeding your baby:
Savoury Fridge Fillers: Variety is key here so you aren’t relying on just one source of protein. Keep a mix of easy proteins in the fridge, such as pre-cooked chicken or steak pieces, hard-boiled eggs, or some pre-cut cheese cubes.
●Kefir or High-Protein Drinking Yogurts: Calcium is vital to protect your maternal bone density. Drinking yogurts are brilliant because they require no hands to eat, support your gut health and give you protein for repair.
Multigrain Crackers with Hummus: A completely zero-prep source of slow-release carbohydrates for sustained energy, healthy fats and iron. Nuts & Seeds: These are such a great source of plant iron, protein and magnesium.
Dates & Peanut Butter: High carbohydrates, fibre and healthy fats to support energy.

If you have a tiny window of time, or if you have a friend asking how they can help, make something for the freezer like these Burritos. They live in the freezer and can be heated up in minutes. The wholemeal wrap provides starchy carbohydrates for energy and fibre from the bean, while the eggs and cheese deliver protein for tissue repair. The red bell peppers are packed with Vitamin C, which significantly increases your body’s ability to absorb the plant-based iron!

The Tried and Tested Way to Serve Packaged Baby Food
As a Registered Nutritionist, I always promote cooking food fresh, but as a mum of three, that’s not always possible. On these days, convenient packaged baby food can be a lifesaver. Instead of feeling guilty, I want to offer reassurance by showing you how to take the new Dunnes Stores baby foods and serve them like a nutritionist.

The Under-12-Month Rule
Babies under 12 months do not need snacks as their nutritional needs are met through their milk and main meals. If your baby is under one, the products below should be used as part of a meal.
1. Sweet Pouches and Pots
Babies prefer sweet tastes because both breastmilk and formula contain natural sugars. Once you introduce fruit, whether you blend it into purees, or buy fruit pots, they both contain the same amount of free sugars. This is because blending breaks down the fruit cell walls, releasing the sugar into a free form.
Serve like a Nutritionist:
Serve sweet foods on a spoon rather than sucking from a pouch to protect your baby’s future teeth. Serve half of a pot or pouch mixed into full-fat Greek-style yogurt or freeze into pops. The protein and fat slow down the release of sugar.
2. Savoury Pouches and Ready Meals
When serving savoury pouches it is important to add in other foods that support your baby’s oral and fine motor skills. Letting your little one interact with food by seeing, smelling and touching different textures helps them to adapt to regular family meal patterns and inspires confidence with new foods.
Serve like a Nutritionist:
Serve the Dunnes Stores Savoury Pouches and Meals alongside very soft, cooked vegetables like broccoli florets, or pair with cooked pasta shapes. This gives you the convenience of a ready-made base while encouraging your baby to actively bite and experience other textures.
3. Puffs, Wheels and Melty Sticks
Melt-in-the-mouth finger foods, like the Dunnes Stores Carrot Puffs, or Tomato and Herb Melty Sticks, are great for teaching your baby hand-eye coordination. However, because they dissolve almost instantly, it is important to include some other foods to help your baby experience a variety of textures, encourage chewing and support overall nutrition.
Serve like a Nutritionist:
Serve any of these handy products as dipping tools to encourage your baby’s tasting skills. Present a few puffs, wheels or sticks on a plate alongside hummus and avocado or egg.
Feeding your baby doesn’t have to be perfect. By taking these simple, convenient Dunnes Stores products and following the tips, you can confidently feed your baby on-the-go all summer long, and I’m here to help you every step of the way.
Happy Feeding,
Aileen xo

Potty Training with
Potty training tips and advice & DUNNES STORES
We know there’s a lot of opinions about potty training. Some advice is valuable... but some is definitely not - so let’s start by saving you the overwhelm. We’ve done the edit, speaking to childcare experts and real parents, who share common challenges with potty training, plus helpful tips, advice and resources for your journey. Whether you’re just getting started, struggling to master the ‘Porcelain Throne’ with your Big Kid, or have questions you never thought you’d have, our experts are here to help.
How to start potty training
The most popular potty training tips combine elements of parental prompting alongside following your child’s lead. Where they vary most is how long they take - those that claim to get the job done in a matter of days, versus those approaches that may take a few months.
Trying the cold turkey approach
Methods that claim to be able to potty train children in a few days or over a weekend tend to be the strictest and most intense. Have a quick Google search and you’ll find any number of books that promise results in three days or less. This type of approach is sometimes referred to as the bootcamp method or ‘going cold turkey’. The advantage is getting the whole thing out of the way quickly - short-term pain for long-term gain.
The drawbacks of the cold turkey approach
The disadvantages? Staying in with your child for several days, monitoring them, mopping up the inevitable accidents and sticking to a schedule of putting them on a potty every 15 minutes is unrealistic for most of us. The intense nature of such an approach doesn’t always go down well with your child. There’s no two ways about it, it’s messy.
Encourage potty training by going with the flow
Of course, there are more staggered approaches. But when it comes to encouraging potty training, w we recommend a softly-softly approach, and advise taking a break if potty training is not going well This way involves getting your child used to the potty and makes use of Huggies® Pull-Ups Training Pants® to bridge the gap between nappies and real underwear
Make potty training fun
When it comes to starting potty training, games, books, rewards, and plenty of encouragement will get your toddler into the potty mindset. There’s more emphasis on making the process fun, allowing for bumps on the road and accepting that it may take weeks or months.
“Be prepared before you start, get everything in place with all the potty training kit you need.”
