Hi everyone, I’m Rocky, and I’ve got to share my incredible ‘rags to riches’ journey with you! I arrived at the Dunn County Humane Society on November 20th, after being found as a stray. Some believed I wasn’t adoptable and insisted I should be put down, but the DCHS staff saw beyond appearances and advocated for me. When I arrived, I had scorched fur on both sides of my body, my teeth were in desperate need of dental care, my ears were terribly deformed from some old injuries, and I was congested, underweight, and dehydrated. In all honesty… I was a bit rough around the edges. However, thanks to the care of the DCHS team, I quickly rebounded. Antibiotics cleared my congestion, fluids rehydrated me, and a nutritious diet provided the calories I needed. Despite my rough exterior, the staff couldn’t resist praising my adorable and sweet personality – if cats could blush, I’d have been bright red! Colfax Animal Hospital gave me a dental cleaning, extracted my troublesome teeth, and by mid-December, I was healthy enough to officially go up for adoption! I saw all the fluffy kittens around me and thought that I would be at the shelter for a long time. Instead, within just a week, my new family fell in love with me, and on December 14th, 2023, they took me to my new forever home. My incredible journey is a true testament to the transformative power of care and compassion, and now I get to spend the holidays surrounded by people who love me. Cheers to second chances and a wonderful New Year!

At Sunshine Learning Center, kids learn through play, hands-on activities, and discovery. Using the natural curiosity, creativity and imagination of each child, putting it to work for problem solving, investigating and making discoveries. Sunshine Learning places a strong emphasis on nature, providing children with experiences in caring for and learning about plants and animals.
New Challenges for Animal Welfare in 2024 As we navigate the challenging landscape of a national crisis in animal welfare, the US Humane Society and the Bissell Pet Foundation paint a dire picture: our beloved animal companions face unprecedented challenges in the coming year. Animal shelters across the US are grappling with a sudden influx of pet surrenders—with the COVID eviction freeze lifted, 11 million pets find themselves newly at risk. Since 2021, there has been a 22.4% increase in dog seizures by law enforcement and an 8% rise in owner surrenders of dogs and cats, and these numbers are expected to rise even further in 2024. Our no-kill shelter is a local beacon of compassion in Dunn County, but we have not been immune to the challenges posed by this crisis, and like 88% of shelters nationally, we’ve had to cut public visiting hours, scale down some of our outreach programs, and turn away both pets and pet owners in need of our help due to a lack of staff and resources. But at DCHS we believe no challenge is too big for community action. By adopting, fostering, donating, volunteering, and promoting responsible pet ownership, you can continue to make a positive impact on our DCHS mission: to ensure that no matter the odds, every Dunn County animal will have the chance at a loving home. As we look toward the new year, we hope you’ll join us this holiday season in making a meaningful impact on the lives of pets, neighbors in our community.
