Tension is mounting in the local council chamber after Cllr Maeve Yore has hit out at inaccurate and untrue statements from a fellow councillor who she claims is trying to take credit for work that she has done. The independent councillor was speaking following this month’s Dundalk Municipal Council meeting in Carlingford where the issue of the upgrading of sewage works in Hazelwood Avenue, Bay Estate was being discussed. The upgrade will be carried out as part of Irish Water’s Combined Sewer Upgrade Project and to facilitate these works the junction between Hazelwood Avenue and the N52 will be closed for

ten weeks from September 19 to Friday December 21. Sinn Fein councillor Ruairi O Mhurchú released a statement on Thursday criticising Irish Water for their failure to notify residents while also claiming he had raised the issue at the monthly municipal meeting in Carlingford with council officials. According to Cllr Yore she was angry after reading the Sinn Fein councillor’s statement as it seemed like he was trying to take credit for all the work she had done on this issue. “The problem with this whole thing is that it is myself who has been working tirelessly on this issue for the past four years. Dundalk’s finest ever female boxer added another trophy to her cabinet last Friday evening when she beat Ciara McGinty to claim the 64kg Women’s Open Elite Boxing title at the National Stadium. The final was hotly anticipated between two of the finest young talents in the country but in the end Broadhurst’s speed and strength proved too much for the former World Junior champion as the Dealgan boxer picked up a unanimous decision. With this victory Amy, the current U-22 European lightweight champion has more or less sealed her place in the Irish team which will travel to India in November to take part in the World Championships. She is also one step closer to her dream of taking part in the next Olympics in Tokyo in 2020. According to Amy’s coach and father Tony Broadhurst Sr this victory was one of the finest of Amy’s career. “I have to say I was very pleased with Amy on Friday night against

Local triathlete raises money for Irish Heart Foundation

Cúchulainn Cycling Club member Celine McPhillips returns home from South Africa this week having completed the gruelling Ironman 70.3 World Championships which took place in Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth last week. The 70.3 refers

to the total distance in miles covered in the race which consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run. Celine, who lives in Annagassan, qualified for the World Championships by coming second in her age group in the tough

hospital, her work has shown her at first hand the effects of heart disease and she wanted to do something to help in that field. “I’ve worked as a resuscitation nurse in Beaumont hospital for the past 16 years and I have seen at first hand the deadly effects of heart disease. I have worked in the front line dealing with cardiac emergencies and have experienced the grief of losing a loved one through heart disease,” explained Celine. “I have also worked alongside the Irish Heart Foundation and

have seen the amazing work they do to promote a healthy lifestyle and try to reduce cardiac disease and strokes. When I qualified for the World Championships I was determined to raise a bit of money for them to support what they do,” noted Celine. According to Celine she first got the triathlon bug fourteen years ago when she entered the Blackrock spring triathlon with a borrowed bike and without a wetsuit. To her amazement she won that race and has been entering competitions ever since. Al-

though she completed the World Championship course in South Africa, Celine admits the ending was really tough with the heat being a factor. “The race in South Africa consisted of 4500 athletes from 120 countries and each person had to qualify so it was a really highclass field. This was my first ever time qualifying for it and I have to say it was an amazing experience. “I had a really good swim and a very good bike ride but as the temperatures went up to over 31 degrees I started to fade on

the run and began to cramp up. I actually started cramping up 1km into the run but I fought hard all the way to the finish walking in parts and eventually crossed the finishing line tired but happy. Making the finish was my goal and I’m delighted I managed to do so,” stated Celine. Jimmy shows his class at national championships

It was a big weekend for Cuchulainn’s Jimmy Flynn at the National Masters Cycling Championships held in Shannon last weekend. Flynn has been crowned a national champion in the past taking the masters 60 Hill climb title last year, therefore he was a marked man coming into this year’s event. First up on Saturday was the time trial, which was a relatively flat course over 24km. Here Flynn had a brilliant ride to take the silver, losing out to John Foote by just over a minute. On Sunday the action moved to the road race championships, 70km of fast action for the Masters 60. Here the bunch came to the line altogether and in a close sprint

Flynn just missed the gold, taking another silver. The winner was North Down rider Tom Henry. While it was hard going so close to the win,

it was an incredible performance by Flynn to take two national medals in successive days. On the cyclocross front, the

Bike Station League kicked off with 30 riders taking part in the first night. Newry man Gary Shiels had made his way to the front of the race by the

end of the first lap, a place he held all night. Second place went to Aaronn McCann and third to PJ Hynes after the pair had a good back & forth battle all night. Saturday also saw the running of the annual Lap of Louth, excellently organised by Barry Rogers, the event is a fund raiser for the SOSAD Charity. The route is literally a lap of the county, covering 170km, including a wellearned coffee and cake stop at the Bike Station. A cycle for the club’s underage riders saw 15 cyclists cover 15km from Felda Gym to the Bike Station, while singing the whole way. The group was joined by a number of parents and had escort vehicles front and back the whole way.

Only one of the Presidential candidates turn up at Louth County Council meeting Just one out of eight potential candidates for next month’s Presidential election turned up at a specially arranged meeting in Louth County Council last week. Eight Presidential hopefuls had requested a meeting with members of Louth County Council to state their case for President but only Gavin Duffy turned up on Wednesday evening to put forward

his case. Peter Casey, Gavin Duffy, Joan Freeman, John Groarke, Marie Goretti Moylan, Sarah Louise Mulligan, Gemma O’Doherty and Kevin Sharkey had all requested time to speak to local councillors but in the end former Dragons Den star Gavin Duffy was the only man to show up. At the meeting Duffy was quizzed by councillors for over an hour and asked what

he thought he could bring to the role. He was asked by Cllr Maeve Yore if he would be willing to do the job unpaid to which he replied “I don’t think anyone should but I do think it’s a very large wage and if the government decided to reduce it I would have no problem with that.” He also told Cllr Oliver Tully that he fully believes that he

has the skillset to carry out the role of President and at 58 years of age he has the energy and drive to go for the Presidency. He was also asked by Cllr Mark Dearey about his involvement in various hunting organisations over the years including the Ward Union Hunt which is Ireland’s only official stag hunt. However, he pledged that he would

neither promote nor actively support blood sports in the country if he got elected. The vote for the councillor’s endorsement for President is due to take place this week at the monthly council meeting. Having been the only nominee to show up Gavin Duffy will probably be quietly confident of receiving that endorsement from the local authority. Gavin Duffy

Pay increase needed for Irish Defence Force − Fitzpatrick

Louth TD Peter Fitzpatrick has called for an increase in pay for the Defence Forces in order to prevent members leaving. “In the last four years 30% of the Defence Forces’ overall strength has left the force, 77% of which were early retirements,” said Mr Fitzpatrick. Deputy Fitzpatrick went on to say ‘I am calling on the Government to improve pay and conditions and restore allowances. We are losing highly skilled and trained personnel on a daily basis. It is worrying that recruitment is not happening at the pace of which it should’. When we lose experienced personnel it has damaging effects on our Defence Forces’ ability to carry

out their role of defending of our State, making contributions to overseas peace support operations and adding to European defence. I have seen the work they do first hand and the effect this can have on their families when I attended the Aiken Barracks in Dundalk with my colleague Minister Paul Kehoe TD to pay tribute to the members of the 112th Infantry Battalion, who were leaving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. These men and women are a credit to our country and further afield for their peace keeping duties. They can leave for 6 months at a time leaving young families behind. They need to be rewarded for their hard work. The Defence Forces are the low-

est paid of all public servants with a starting private earning just €27k a year including allowances and a recruit earning just €14k a year. A survey carried out found that 84.12% of serving personnel earn below the average public service wage. “A large volume of Defence Forces personnel depend on Family Income Supplement to get by. Any member who joined the defence force after 2011 have reduced pay scales, while their actual date of recruitment will determine their specific occupational pension terms. Concluding Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick stated ‘As an ex-solider myself, I am in support of full pay restoration to pre-2008 levels for the Irish Defence Force.’

Fundraiser in aid of The Birches A Line Dancing Fundraising Night is being held in the Carnbeg Hotel, Armagh Road, Dundalk on Saturday September 15 in aid of the Birches Alzheimer’s Day Care Centre in Dundalk. Following on from their successful fundraising nights over the past three years, the Outlaws Line Dancing Club have once again decided to don their cowboy hats and Stetsons and take to the floor for a night of music, dancing and lots of fun. Maggie Cadwell will be leading the dancing and Dundalk’s finest DJ - “Doc” David Darcy will provide the tunes on the night. A

raffle will take place with lots of spot prizes to be won. The function starts at 8.30pm, but be prepared for a late night as there’ll be dancing into the wee small hours. Tickets cost €10 and are available at the door on the night.

Dundalk Youth Theatre to host an open day Dundalk Youth Theatre is back with an exciting new term on the 22nd of September. In conjunction with this, the group will be hosting an open day on Saturday September 15th in An Táin Arts Centre. The open day is a free workshop for young people to come alone and try a drama workshop. Each workshop that Dundalk Youth Theatre delivers is designed to foster

St Vincent’s Secondary School launched their Annual 5k Run, now in its third year, on Wednesday 5th September. It was a memorable day as all students, teachers, staff and members of the Parents’ Council gathered together for the launch. Given the school’s abundance of athletic talent, it was only fitting for the ceremony to include a celebration of recent achievements by a number of current

pupils. Sixth Year student, Patience Jumbo-Gula’s successes at both the European Athletics Championships and the International Youth Olympics were celebrated on the evening. A clip of her finishing the former race was projected onto a big screen as students enthusiastically cheered her on. Patience, together with national champions, Kate O’Connor, Aoibhin McMahon and Erinn Leavy spoke briefly about their competitive experiences and shared

advice on topics such as well-being and healthy eating. Rebecca Carr, a past pupil of St.Vincent’s and Louth Ladies GAA All-Ireland finalist also spoke about the importance of sport and keeping fit, while encouraging the school body to support the Louth team in their All-Ireland endeavors in Croke Park. Irish international athlete, Brian Gregan, was also present and gave an inspirational talk highlighting some of the key moments in his career. Mr Gre-

gan, a prizewinner of several competitions worldwide and recordbreaker at the European Athletic Championships in Zurich among others, spoke about his joys and resilience to overcome challenges in his journey to success. Louth contemporary folk favourites Kern return to The Spirit Store on September 14 for a headline show in the upstairs room. Winners of last year’s TradFest Temple Bar Showcase, Louth contemporary folk favourites Kern are fresh from high-profile appearances at Fleadh Ceoil na hÉireann and Fleadh TV and a US trip to play shows at the enormous Milwaukee Irish Fest. The band’s live set includes tracks from their album, the critically-acclaimed False Deceiver, and they comprise champion fiddler Barry Kieran, uilleannpiper Brendan McCreanor, and singer/songwriter/guitarist SJ McArdle. Young musicians do the county proud Young musicians from Comhaltas Craobh Dhún Dealgan did their branch and county proud at the recent Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Drogheda when they finished in one of the top three positions in eight competitions. This year the branch are celebrating their 60th birthday and the high musical standards set by founding members like Brendan Gaughran, Eamon de Bhal and Rory Kennedy are still being maintained all these years later. Competition standards are amazingly high at Fleadh Cheoil na

hÉireann with the cream of musical talent from Ireland and abroad taking part. Sárán Mulligan won the Senior Concertina competition. All Ireland success is nothing new to Sárán as he had previously won the title at 12-15 and 15-18 level and was also a member of an All Ireland winning Duet and Trio. Anna McCaul won the Under 12 Melodeon competition. Anna who is a member of a musical family was placed second with her brother Bobby in the under 12 Duet compe-

tition at last year’s Fleadh. James White took 2nd place in the 15-18 Piano Accordion competition. Between 2013 and 2016 James was the winner of four titles in a row on the accordion. Donnchadh Hughes, a former All Ireland champion on Flute finished in third place in the 15-18 Harp air competition while Kevin Keelan was placed second in the Senior Uilleann Pipes Airs competition. It was success on the double for young Pearse Óg McMahon who was placed second in the English

Singing and third in the Irish singing competitions in the Under 12 age group. As well as being an accomplished singer Pearse is also learning the button accordion at the weekly classes organised by Craobh Dhún Dealgan. His singing teacher is his dad Pearse Snr who takes the branch singing classes. In the hotly contested 15-18 group competition Grúpa Cheoil Cúchulainn from CCÉ Dún Dealgan were placed third. It was no mean achievement for the group of twenty musicians as it was their first

year in this very competitive age group after moving up from 12-15 level . Branch classes for the 2018/2019 season will commence later this month where champions of the future will start by learning how to hold their instrument and play the scale. The Awards are aimed at honouring the inspiring work and achievements of thousands of projects, clubs and individuals all over Ireland with the help of Good Causes funding. Nearly 30 cent in every euro spent on National Lottery games goes back to Good Causes. The Dundalk group has come out tops in the East Region in the Arts & Culture and Youth categories, and now proceed to the Awards finals. The winners will be announced at a televised Gala Awards Dinner in Dublin on November 3. A total of 36 groups from all

over Ireland go forward to the final in six categories – Sport, Health & Wellbeing; Arts & Culture; Heritage; Community and Youth. Each national category winner will receive €10,000 while the overall Good Cause of the Year will get another €25,000 on top of this. Another Louth group, Cairde na Cruite, based in Termonfeckin has also made it to the final. This group promotes the revival of the Irish Harp, something which has been a strong Irish tradition for over 1,000 years. Good Causes funding has helped grow the annual harp summer school, An Chúirt Chruitireachta, which now hosts international harpers and traditional musicians. The Cox’s Demesne Youth & Community Project provides a space for young people in the community who are excluded

from all mainstream programmes, projects, and clubs. Good Causes funding has helped it develop drug awareness and equality programmes, social education and leadership training. National Lottery CEO, Dermot Griffin, today congratulated the Louth winners on coming through the Regional stage of the competition and wished them the best of luck for the finals. He said: “We were overwhelmed at the level of entries we received for our first National Lottery Good Causes Awards. We had over 500 applications from every County in Ireland in all categories. Through these Awards we want to show how people, organisations, projects and sports clubs are doing extraordinary things in their communities. This is work that often goes unrecognised.”

This week the girls enjoyed a treasure hunt, a table quiz, some karaoke from hit musicals and a Speed Dating Getting to Know You session. Principal Michelle Dolan outlined the value of the initiatives to the students. “The transition to second level is difficult for all students, and we have many girls

who come from small country schools. This is a wonderful way to help the girls to integrate successfully and quickly. “The relationship they build with the older students is also very important so they have a sense of belonging in every sense - they love that they know older students as well as other first years. The Cairde team benefits too. They show empathy and kindness, and develop their communication and leadership skills,” she stated.

Adams concerned at depletion of Louth Garda fleet

Sinn Féin Deputy Gerry Adams has contacted the Minister for Justice regarding the reduction in Louth Garda Síochána vehicle numbers which was recently confirmed to him. The Sinn Féin TD said:

Rafferty bidding for second Scratch Cup

South of Ireland champion Caolan Rafferty will be the big draw when the One Finance sponsored Dundalk Scratch Cup takes place this Sunday, September 16, over 36 holes at Dundalk Golf Club. Since he first won the competition in 2016, Rafferty has firmly established himself as one of the top amateur players in Ireland and is currently the second highest ranked Irishman in the World Amateur Golf Rankings where he sits this week in 63rd place. He will head home to Dundalk after spending the earlier part of this week in the Welsh seaside resort of Conwy as part of an Irish team looking to win the

Home Internationals for a fifth year in a row. Last year, Rafferty had to settle for third place behind Warrenpoint’s Colm Campbell in his defence of a title that includes the likes of three times major winner Padraig Harrington among its former champions since its inception in 1963 when David Sheahan was the first winner. Rafferty’s presence alone is sure to guarantee a large crowd at Dundalk on Sunday as the locals avail of a rare opportunity to see the 25-year-old in competitive action over his home course. Rafferty will lead a strong home challenge into this year’s competition with all eight members of Dundalk’s Senior Panel

included in the field as they battle for places in next month’s All-Ireland Barton Shield semifinal at Thurles Golf Club. Dundalks RSTC announce Apprenticeship Open Day An Information Briefing on Apprenticeship will be held in the Regional Skills and Training Centre, Coes Road Dundalk on Monday September 17 from 10am until Noon. This event provides an opportunity for those who would like to learn more about apprenticeship, for example: What is an apprenticeship? What is involved? What qualifications do you need?

Elma McMahon from the Regional Skills and Training Centre explained that it is a smart route to earn and learn your way to a qualification. School-leavers who prefer to combine work experience with study as a way of gaining a qualification have an increasing number of pathways open to them, thanks to the resurgence in apprenticeships.

Saturday September 15 brings the pinnacle of the Louth Camogie season with the final of the senior championship between St Brides and St Kevins. This year the event takes place in St Mary’s in Ardee, with the throw in at 6pm. St Brides, who have been absent from the championship final for a few years, have been quietly building a championship team, which draws upon some youthful new additions who have made it up through the ranks as well

as seasoned championship players. St Kevin’s, the holders, will be looking for revenge for their defeat to St Brides during the championship round robin competition. Meanwhile, the Saturday of Camogie all Ireland Final weekend is also when the All Ireland under 14 Camogie County blitzes are played. Louth currently play in Division 5, but based on their performance this weekend, that could very well change.

Having been drawn in a group with Monaghan, Roscommon and Wicklow, Louth managed to get through their group having beaten Monaghan and Wicklow with only a single loss to Roscommon. They secured their place in the semi final with Tyrone and Louth completely dominated this with a resounding 4-3 to 0-1 win The final was against Roscommon which was a much tougher affair with Roscommon coming away eventual victors.
